I've been here two or three times and it's got a lot of options compared to the average local Mexican joint - things like mole and trout Veracruz that a lot of places don't offer are done here and decently executed. On this visit, I opted for the cheese chile relleno, which was tasty. This is a great place if you want Mexican food, but not a heavy dose of grease and pain. Our party enjoyed their traditional margaritas as well as the passion fruit ones they had on special. The guacamole received mixed reviews. The taco salad was gigantic and good. It's quite a small restaurant, so there's usually a wait, especially if you have a large party, but they are adept at accommodating you. Our desserts (chocolate lava cake and cheesecake) were pretty mediocre.

Authentic Mexican cuisine, great service, and live mariachi band on Sunday evenings. I've been going here for 15 years and I've even taken my Costa Rican friend who gave it her stamp of approval (which is not an easy task). In my opinion, this is the best Mexican restaurant in Maryland and I've been to A LOT of them.

Does MD have any decent Mexican food? I'm about to find out. Since being in MD and when I lived here previously I found that good Mexican food was almost unheard of in this area. A few people have recommended El Azteca with the caveat "It's not what your'e used to in California" I'd have to agree with that. I'm giving El Azteca a solid 3-ish. Okay, especially since there's basically no other Mexican food around. I don't think these guys would do very well in Southern California, but we're not in So Cal are we. First the good. The margaritas were cheap and VERY strong! The servers were super nice, albeit a bit slow for my taste. We were seated quickly despite the place being packed (always a bonus when you show up hungry on a Friday night). It was also very munchkin friendly. Now, the not so good. The food was just okay. The munchkins had enchiladas and burritos and seemed to be okay with them. The SO had soft tacos. Unfortunately, the beef in the tacos was ground beef. I don't mean to be a jerk here, but I took a bit and I would rather have had taco bell. I say that with no hyperbole. I had an enchilada with all the trimmings. It was okay. Basically okay, but the cheese was a little off. Let's be clear. This place is far and away the best Mexican food we've had....in Maryland. I'll be back and try some of the higher end stuff on the menu and probably a few of those smokin' margaritas.

I eat here at least twice a week, if not every week. I work right across the street and love their fajitas. A Mexican lady that used to cut my hair claimed it was the most authentic place in the area, but that wouldn't matter to me because the food is GOOD. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because the service is sometimes lousy, depending on which person you get.

I think that this place is one of the best Mexican restaurants around! It's a small place with an authentic feel. The food is good and you get plenty of it. Only drawback: they charge for extra Chips.

I am from Texas. I am not going to pretend that that makes me some kind of self-appointed Tex-Mex expert, but it does mean I have needs. Mexican food needs. Some of the local places can meet them, and some of them can't (Looking at you Frisco Grill and Zapatas...). This place definitely does, AND it's for a reasonable price like Mexican food is supposed to be. I judge a place by it's salsa, and really this is some of the best around. I wish my homemade stuff came out as good as theirs. It's definitely not from a jar. They have some interesting more authentic Mexican dishes, some great traditional Tex-Mex stuff, and some stuff for the people who like the California variety of Mexican. Not everything is great, but so far nothing has been bad. The boy loves the pork burrito, the stuffed peppers in mole sauce we got there once (maybe a special?), was really good, and I think I got their carne asada and really liked it once... Anyway, it's the best in area within a reasonable driving distance of Columbia.

All I can say is I drive out of my way to get here! I live in Laurel, work in Columbia, but drive all the way to Clarksville for it. The food is just that good. Also, El Azteca has to be great because my California friend who is a mexican food snob loves it! Since I introduced her to this place, she finds all sorts of reasons to be in the area so we can go there. The salsa and chips are excellent; I have to consciously stop myself from eating them. The only bummer is that the first serving is on the house; the rest cost a couple of bucks. You don't want fill up on the chips and salsa anyway because the food is sooo good. I don't know whether it makes sense to even list my dishes because everything served here tastes fantastic. My two favorites are the tacos de alambre and the rainbow trout veracruz. Last, but not least, the margaritas are so good, I always end up drinking two even though I want to leave room for the food. Do heed the warnings about it being very busy. The restaurant is small and it is common for it to be completely packed (including the bar stools and bar tables).

*3.5 stars I haven't been here in agessss. So today, a few friends and I met for lunch (a slightly more authentic choice than the usual Chipotle). I didn't try my friends' food, but they both said it was delicious (California burrito and crab/shrimp chimichanga). I ordered ceviche and a cup of El Azteca chili. The ceviche was definitely not the best I've had--and I think improperly made because it did not seemed to actually be made with raw seafood. Bleh. BUT the El Azteca chili was TO DIE FOR. Seriously, I haven't had such good chili ever. There was ground beef as well as nice chunks of beef (brisket I think), paired with cornbread--which by the way was wayyyyyy to small (though delicious) The fried ice cream was also really good. It had an interesting crust of shredded coconut and cornflakes. I happen to be a huge fan of coconut, so I loved it. I'm glad I revisited El Azteca and I'll probably come back again in the near future. P.S. The service is also pretty slow, even for lunch. We had to ask for water 2-3 times.

I would give this restaurant five stars for the Mole alone but have to take away one star because the mole is served with sliced chicken breast instead of the traditional leg/thigh/or breast (on the bone) that I grew up with... otherwise the mole is spot on! A lil sweet, a lil spicy.. and oh so delicious. I usually ignore the rice and beans at other mexican restaurants because it's always the same flavorless made from a box or can stuff that is just not worth the calories.. would rather save my appetite for dessert jiji.. but at el Azteca I eat everything off my plate every time! I've also tried the carne asada which was deliciously tasty you can tell they marinate the beef in the tranditional mexican style before they grill it...and my boyfriend swears by the Burro Cortes and also the pork dish. Their marrgaritas and sangrias are very yummy... and don't forget to get the flan for dessert.. it's creamy and thick just the way I like it! Overall I would be there more often it it was a bit closer.. but definitely go anytime I crave a good mole!

The short haired bartender with golden/orange highlights is a nasty person every time I come into here! I will be the only one at the bar and she will look and see my drink is empty and walk away. I own a business in Clarksville and I will never recommend any of my clients to here.

Once again the place is excellent! Good service really good food and live music tonight. Seriously you guys, come on over, enjoy the fajitas, the soup, the guacamole! Enjoy, mi amigos!

Been going here for over a decade and it's by far my favorite Mexican restaurant. As an AZ native thats saying a lot! If anything they have the best salsa in the area. My family usually gets combination platters. They're always a good bet. I also like their fajitas and tostadas. I've noticed it's hard to find a good tostada out here but El Azteca doesn't disappoint. They have some good happy hour bar deals so make sure to check out their website. Their vegetarian options (broccoli burrito, bean and cheese burrito, special vegetarian combo to name a few) are more extensive than most Mexican restaurants which is a nice plus. My vegetarian friends over the years have always been impressed by this as well as happy with their selections. The only thing I haven't loved are their nachos - they're overloaded and kind of soggy. I'll give them a pass on that since I've loved everything else I've tried over the past 14 years. El Azteca is nothing like La Palapa, their line of sister restaurants which I don't care for. I don't know why they're so different. Don't go to those places thinking it's like El Azteca or rule out El Azteca because of the affiliation. El Azteca is the real deal all around.

Okay had to review this one, because far too many people are commenting on how this is the best Mexican food ever. Let's be real they make a good quesadilla, the tacos are ok, the fajitas are mehh, the chicken enchilada was gross despite the waiter selling me on it. The margaritas are just ok, however they are not made to order they sit around in some vat of sugary sour mix for hours. The staff is decent I suppose even though they will push you to get a $10 three fruit juice margarita concoction with probably one shot of tequila. Honestly, go to Route 40, Laurel, or if you're feeling adventurous head into Baltimore city to get some real Mexican food. Hint the best places are the ones where you don't order in English.

I went last night with a group of 12 people to celebrate a birthday. The food was great and waitress was ok. We brought our own cake to eat at the end of our meal. When we asked for plates we were told we would be charged a $1.00 a plate because we brought our own cake. I found this to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! I have worked in the restaurant business since I was 17 and have never heard of charging someone for plates. It sounds like a money hungry owner to me. I asked the waitress why and she said because they have their own cake. I understand that but I should have the option to bring my own cake without getting charged for plates! On top of that we had already spent over $300 that evening. Needles to say we will not being going back here for events that involve cake. Great food but I do not recommend for celebrations also because they cram you into a room and try to put other large parties in the same room. The tables were just way to close together.

Linganore has plenty of tables for picnics =) *I believe they are owned/co-owned by the same people who own and run La Palapa and Pachanga Grill and Cocina Mexicana.

Cute place that was busy on a holiday night. We were greeted by the host as soon as we walked in. We ordered vegetarian items: muchos nachos and the vegetarian dinner. Both were huge portions (left with most of it as leftovers) and food was delicious and well seasoned. Vegetarian food at Mexican places can sometimes be bland but not here. We also tried 2 special margaritas, tamarind and spicy mango, both delicious! Very strong, my husband couldn't drive home after. The place was nice, has different sections, including a bar area with tv's and more of a sports bar feel. Our waitress was also super sweet and attentive. We'll be back!

I've been here a few times and it's just a good time. The place is loud and sometimes cramped for space. The service is good as is the food. Not great, but good enough to come back. They have a bunch of different margarita choices (flavored, unflavored, top shelf, just ok tequila, on the rocks, frozen) and a full bar. First time I was here I had the Carne Asada. Fair warning, they basically bring you a full steak- no small time slices on this dish. The last two times I've had their fajitas. Both chicken and steak are very good. A friend has had the shrimp and also enjoyed it. It's a good place to catch up with a friend over drinks but I would say don't bring a large party unless you expect no one to be able to hear each other.

I used to like El Azteca a lot when I was younger, but hadn't been there in years until today. I remember the quality being better back in the day, but it's still... OK. Solid standard Mexican food. I went with my family, and, as we always do, we prefaced our whole order by telling the waitress we are all vegetarians. It turns out that, despite them having a "vegetarian" section on their menu, their rice (which is listed in several of the "vegetarian" dishes) is not vegetarian. I just don't understand places that do this-- if you're going to list something as vegetarian, make sure it is fully vegetarian. They offered double beans, or subbing in salad for $1. My brother ordered a bean and cheese chimichanga, with double beans instead of rice. His order came out, he took a bite, and spit it out-- it was a crab and shrimp chimichanga. This could have been really dangerous if he had been allergic! They were just barely apologetic--we got drive-by apologies from the waitress and the manager. My parents both subbed salads for rice, but their plates came out with rice on them. The waitress didn't catch it until she got to the table. Overall the food is OK, but the service needs some work.

Had dinner with the hubs here tonight - pretty disappointed. Lack of flavor in pretty much everything except the salsa. I got the El Azteca Margarita, which was just ok. We got the queso fundido, which was also just ok. I got the shrimp fajitas, which were really blah & flavorless - I didn't even want to eat the rest of the shrimp. Hubs got the beef rancheros enchiladas, and I've never seen him not finish his dinner.... Service was prompt & attentive, and I loved the band trio playing Mexican music. They sang happy birthday to a table near us & it was fun! Their fried ice cream looked amazing, but I wasn't willing to give it a shot after such a mediocre dinner. $50 before tip.

If you are in western Howard County and are in the mood for a Mexican meal then this is where to go. I have tried all the other local restaurants and this is my favorite. The owners of this restaurant own most of the other popular Mexican restaurants that are local but this location is my favorite. Fajitas are the best!

I grew up in Southern California and I spent three years in San Antonio, Texas. I still have not been wow'd by the Mexican food in Maryland. That being said, El Azteca is just as good as a a couple of other Mexican restaurants in the area. It'll hit the spot if you're craving Mexican and want to have a sit down meal. This was the first place that I've ever been to that charged for more chips and salsa though.

Things were good to the bill came and then we were missed charged, misquoted and very rudely approached about the whole thing . The manager was no help whatsoever I would not recommend this place , if you do choose to go however I would strongly recommend that you make sure to check your bill They overcharged us by about $45 and would not correct the mistake.

Came here for an early lunch today for the first time. And when the place is buzzing before noon, you know it's good! Restaurant is clean, service is fast and friendly, food is fresh and the passion fruit Margarita was delicious!! This was a delicious find and I can't wait to come back!

Holy guacamole. I LOVE El Azteca. I've been coming here for the last 15 years of my life--to celebrate birthdays, holidays, special occasions, family dinners, and causal meals. On a Friday night, you might spot some local celebrities (HOLLER, Creig Northrop!), all your neighbors, and enjoy a live Mariachi band. The restaurant has evolved over time to look like the inside of a Mexican tavern. Stucco walls, rustic lamps, and warm lighting welcome you to the surprisingly classy restaurant (surprising because it's located in a strip mall.) The people who work here are very kind, knowledgeable, and authentic. They are attentive and friendly each and every visit - they do their jobs well, no muss no fuss. The food here is Americanized Mexican, but still offers many authentic dishes. Each meal starts with salty, hot, crispy tortilla chips and house salsa--tasty! I often get a Cadillac margarita, but they have a full menu to choose from. My go-to order is the beef fajita platter--served sizzling hot with onions, peppers, tomato, and beef, with a side platter of tortillas, sour cream, guac, tomatoes, rice, and beans. I love making each bite different, and each component is well seasoned and fresh. Sometimes I'll opt for the camarones dish of the day or week (shrimps)- the seafood is fresh and I've enjoyed some of the fish specials and scallop dishes. If I'm feeling wild, I'll finish up my meal with fried ice cream--YUMMY. For my 11th birthday, I got 3 orders of it to myself. And I'd do it again for my 26th.

I've been coming to El Azteca for years, as it is one of the few non-chain restaurants in the Clarksville area. In addition, they serve up Mexican food, which is my absolute favorite. Prices are very reasonable, and I've never experienced anything less than great service. On my most recent visit, I had the steak tacos, which were absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked just how I liked it, and they were topped with cheese, lettuce, and guacamole. The tacos are served with refried beans and rice. In addition, they always bring out fresh chips and salsa right after you sit down, but only the first round is complimentary. The restaurant is pretty small, and almost always crowded. I got there right at 5 on Friday, and was able to get a table no problem, but by 6:30 when I left there was a long wait. I would definitely make a reservation if you can. Finally, don't forget to enjoy a margarita with your meal! They are tasty and cheap.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I lived in Mexico City many years ago and I'm always on the lookout for a place that serves food that tastes authentically Mexican. El Azteca comes very close to that goal. All dinners begin with a basket of chips and red, spicy salsa. Often I'll also order guacamole as an appetizer. It's always fresh and delicious. Although everything that I've tried is quite good my favorite entree is beef Tacos al Pastor served with corn tortillas, for my husband its the beef fajitas. For drinks I recommend sangria or any of their margaritas. The service has always been friendly and responsive.

Went to dinner tonight. The service was prompt and friendly, however the rest of the visit did not go so well. The place had a funny smell when we walked in and the food was below average. We ordered the steak and chicken fajitas. The chicken was dry. The beef was ok, but we only had a few pieces. I did enjoyed their chips as they were warm and seemed to be fresh. I do not think that I will be coming back though.

I am in no way a mexican food-ie but I thought I'd try this place out with a group of friends. When we sat down, chips and salsa came to our table. The chips were thin and broke easily but the salsa was chunky just the way I like it (oh and... if you request for another container of salsa they will charge you) I ordered the Chicken Mole ($16.75 +tax) and a Margarita. The Margarita was spot on. Nice cold sweetness and tangy. This was officially my first time trying chicken mole. The Mole had a hint of peanuty taste to it which was interesting but it was poured right over my chicken so it made my dish messy and soggy. :(

I wish that Mexican restaurants would put as much effort into beans and rice as the good ones put into their sauces. El Azteca is one of the good Mexican places. The Clarksville restaurant makes a serious effort to cook serious food -- from Tex-Mex down south of the border. But it's a fun place. Fun from the start -- a bowl of chips with a fresh tomato salsa. That's the good-restaurant salsa. Fresh, spicy, great with just the chips or drinks while you're looking at the menu. Then you get into dinner. They're not just dumping the same sauce on everything. The pork tacos came with a green sauce that was on fire. Grilled meat with vegetables on a corn tortilla. Then brought alive by just a little dab of the fiery green. Spicy in the freshest, most delicious fashion. On the other side was the chicken mole. That tender, sliced white meat was covered in a dark, nuanced sauce. Moles are one of those dishes that I can't make at home. I hear it's made with chocolates and spices. My wife forked up her chicken happily. She didn't eat the side dishes. Why do folks fill the side half of the plate with such little inspiration? The beans and rice are fine, but nothing more. Plain rice cooked yellow. Beans mashed and heated. On my first visit, I thought they were better than La Palapa's, but this time, they weren't enough to make me even wonder if they're made in-house or bought in a can. It's a mystery that I have found at most Mexican restaurants. Why not flavorful beans and rice? Why not options? El Azteca puts real effort into the tortilla soup, which comes with enough chicken to almost qualify as a rich stew. Creating that broth takes time and talent. I spooned it happy -- especially happy because my throat was sore. I wish I'd had a bowl. Just like I wish I had some great rice and beans.

Decent food. Better than others I have tried in the DMV area thats why it gets 4 stars. They lose 2 star though because they charge you for extra chips and salsa. The fried ice cream is to die for!

This will be my first review for El Azteca, but I've been here a few times. Over all every time I've been here that service and the food has been equally good. We had a party of 12 and the host staff were great in trying to get us seated in a timely fashion. Once we were seated I ordered the Camarones(shrimp) a la Mexicana. I wasn't sure about the combination of shrimp broccoli, mushrooms but I think the garlic-cilantro butter pulls it all together. The shrimp were well coooked and flavors work well together. This was definitely one the best dishes I've had here and I would recommend anyone looking for some mexican food to try it.

I have been to El Azteca for lunch and dinner. The food is very good and the service is top notch. Mexican is not my favorite food, but El Azteca makes me keep coming back.

Just got on yelp and now need to review my favorite restaurant. Been going there since I was about 10 years old (when it opened). Food is awesome! Pretty authentic, for Maryland anyway :) Best salsa around!

  • Rosario G.

  • Angel D.

The short haired bartender with golden/orange highlights is a nasty person every time I come into here! I will be the only one at the bar and she will look and see my drink is empty and walk away. I own a business in Clarksville and I will never recommend any of my clients to here.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
