This place is awesome. I've lived in Burtonsville for a few years now, and this place makes me happy to keep living here (not too many other reasons!). Amazing lamb kabobs. Wow. Served with quarters of grilled tomato and onion.... Chicken tikka is super flavorful, although it has bones (if you're not into that). The Kafta kabob is wonderful as well. Don't miss it. One of the weekly specials is a curry chicken, which is cheap, and a must-have. One person here wrote about the rice... bland? BLAND??? Absolutely not. I had kabob at multiple "Moby Dick" locations, and boy was that rice bland! Oh my god, it was terrible. The rice at Meiwand is some kind of jasmine long grain or something, seasoned with cinnamon and some other stuff, and has a brown color. It is delicious. Delicious. The large, round, toasty/chewy tandoori bread is off the hook, and comes with each order! And of course, the pumpkin. Order the pumpkin. Order it with yogurt sauce, and you'll be in flavor country. Order it with the ground beef on top and it'll be some OGP (Original Gangsta Pumpkin). Pair an order of Lamb Kebob, rice, and pumpkin, with a delcious European Pilsner and you'll have yourself an amazing meal.

The wait is a little long - but it's nice inside and the guys that work there are pretty nice and friendly. They are kid-friendly. It's a good spot to get a nice quiet meal with the family. There was more than enough food for each dish. For a kabob place, it's a little nice for a kabob place - I'm not used to that. But I would put this restaurant in our weekly friday dinners rotation.

Friend took me here once and it was delicious. I will go again when I'm near by

Seriously, don't believe the hype. Because that's the mistake I made which led me to a huge disappointment for today's lunch. Based on everyone's ratings and reviews here, I decided that Maiwand Kabob would be the place to meet and catch up with an old friend. I got the Chicken kebab dish (not the boneless one) and my friend got the lamb kebab. When I was ordering, I felt myself regretting it already as I stood at the counter and couldn't help but notice how everything under the glass display seemed to be swimming in grease and oil. My chicken was pretty flavorless and when you bite into it, you can see that it's tinged bright pink--like tacky-barbie-plastic-PINK. Nothing natural could have been part of this bright pink concoction that was used to flavor this chicken. If I'm trading in my daily calorie-intake for one meal--AT LEAST LET ME HAVE IT BE SAVORY AND FLAVORFUL!! I will say this though, the rice was kick ass and the chicken WAS juicy (thanks to hot pink grease). The salad wasn't fresh and was just shredded lettuce drowning in dressing. The green chutney was OK, definitely had better chutney at Udupi Palace. Naan was OK. And yeah, whats the deal with the un-sweetened black tea tasting just like McDonald's sugar water aka. sweet tea? Gross. I just ended up getting a cup full of pink-tinged water from the Hi-c Pink Lemonade option. Hot pink chicken with some pink tinged water, my meal was barbie-tastic. Maybe I shouldn't be so harsh for a place that serves 9$ meals on styrofoam plates. Or maybe I WILL, for the sake of others that might get equally hood-winked by all the hype--I write this review for you! Peace, and much love to ya.

This Maiwand might be my favorite one; they are all different. The salad here is the freshest and the dressing is the most flavorful. The quality and seasoning of the meat here is on another level. It is intense but not in a hot/spicy or annoying kind of way. It just seems like their marinade has had a chance to penetrate entire cuts of meat. If you like the other Maiwands, give this one a try. If you haven't had Maiwand yet, go anyway.

Love the Lamb Kaboobs. The Nan bread accents the meal well. Try the eggplant in the front display. Very good for a quick carry out place.

The size and location could mislead one to expect just average but once you get into Maiwand you'll be amazed by the food. Its so good you'll want more. My only complaint would be with the tea which was just ordinary which is not what you would expect from a Middle Eastern eatery. Its free though so no complaints there. Would be nice for them to offer Afghan style teas

This place is, as others have stated, a hidden gem! Boy, was I surprised!!! I had not wanted a veggie platter from a kabob shop, since the idea of meat kabobs kind of makes me feel ill.... But when in Burtonsville, there are not too many choices when seeking a slightly spicy flavor for food offerings. I wonder if it's because I had low expectations that I was so pleased? I wonder if it's the peremptory responses to my inquiries about veg oil vs butter? I wonder if it was the incredible volume and mass of food? Ok, to be honest, I don't wonder that the portion size and dairy-free cooking were the reasons I was so pleased for the $10.50 price ($9.99 on the website...). The flavors were also surprisingly good- not just oil and salt, though for sure, there was plenty of both. The food was fresh large chunks of potatoes with peas- lightly spiced tomato sauce and potatoes were perfect, not too soft! There was also a split pea spiced dish, fabulous spinach and rice. In addition, sweet roasted pumpkin and sautéed (mushy!!!) eggplant that can come with yogurt or without. The pumpkin was essentially dessert! The eggplant was kinda greasy.... To top it all off, then there was a huge piece of flat tandoori bread- no butter. Truly a gem!! Knowing there are 4 others... If I am stuck in those areas, I will feel confident to eat there, too!

I'll start by saying that I'm not normally a fan of afghan kabob. However this place was a pleasant surprise for me today. I had the chicken kabob platter - a green salad, rice, and a good portion size of chicken kabobs with pita for $10.50. Only negative was that the drink was not included for that price. This was the best kabob I've ever had - most places like these have dry meat. This restaurant's chicken kabobs were juicy and flavorful. I also thought the rice was well cooked and had tasty spices. I'll definitely come back again and try the beef and lamb kabobs in the near future.

I used to live in Virginia where kabob places are everywhere, sadly there are not too many in Maryland This place is truly a find. Whenever I need my kabob fix this place hits the spot. My go to dish is the combo of chicken tikka and kofta kabob.

Solid kabobs in burtonsville. Pretty tasty and decently flavorful. Next time I'll get the lamb chops, they were highly recommended.

I used to like it here..not anymore. It's unsanitary :-( I have frequented this restaurant a few times and always felt the food tasted fairly good..., although I haven't had a piece of Naan that didn't have more than its fair share of burnt crusted over parts. Sometimes there are huge charred pieces stuck to the dough!. Is the pan these cook in not being cleaned regularly?? They seem to always be "well done"- but maybe that's their style!?? Anyway, sometimes I just pick away at those parts. But today, I ordered an extra piece before leaving and the guy at the counter (the cashier who was handling the money) turned around, picked it up with his bare hands, folded it in half, and then stuffed it into a brown paper bag. He did not wash his hands after handling the money from the customer before me. :-( Argh!! There is really NO excuse for that kind of carelessness and unsanitary behavior. I used to like it here. Not anymore :-( Go around the corner to Khana Claypot Grille located in the Giant shopping food center. Their service is slow but the taste is just as good- if not better- and it's more sanitary.

I love the lamb kabob...spinach...chick peas...salad...and the wonderful oven flat bread. I've been eating the same plate for 6 years now and I never get tired of it. It's always deliciously on point. Take out style but made with supreme knowledge of traditional Middle Eastern fare. Yummy!

So many of my friends had raved about Maiwand that I was keen to try it, Lent or no Lent. The location was a perfect halfway point for me (Baltimore) and my friend (DC) to meet and catch up. The food was excellent: grilled salmon with vegetables, pleasantly charred and smoky; fresh green salad; warm rice pilaf and steaming flatbread. The highlight was probably the creamy, spicy cilantro sauce, of which I quickly requested more. Unfortunately, the atmosphere and service are a big part of dining out, too, and both were pretty terrible here. The guy at the counter barely spoke English and seemed not at all happy to be there. His co-worker had a better command of language and communication, but was decidedly unhelpful when we asked if they could turn up the heat. It was absolutely freezing in there: we kept our coats on and were still shivering. He said it was "broken" and offered no further explanation, apology or suggestion (maybe a cup of hot tea or even a sympathetic smile? Come on, people!) We were too far from home to take our food to go, which is what everyone else appeared to be doing, so we bolted it down and then drove to Starbucks to continue talking and warm up a bit. So: come for the food, but don't expect anything more!

In my TOTALLY unbiased opinion. This is the best food in Maryland. Chicken is great and so is the Lamb. Rice is phenomenal. Will come here again!

The only place that can really compete with Kabob Palace. The food is amazing, everything was fresh and delicious. My mouth is watering as I write this... The only down side is they don't give you sides compared to other Afghan Kabob places (usually give 2 sides) best part if you ask me... That's why I gave them 4 stars rather than 5...

Fantastic Afghani cuisine in the outskirts of Montgomery County! I'm fortunate enough to work down the road from Maiwand, though I still don't get to eat here as often as I'd like. Still, when I do, I'm never disappointed. Things to try here... well, besides everything... * Kebabs: The chicken is moist and tender, and very flavorful. The lamb is juicy and perfectly tangy. The beef is spot on, and the kofta (ground beef) kebabs are especially delicious. * Naan: The bread is freshly baked per order, so it always comes out hot and fragrant. Also very flavorful! * Sides: I really like the spinach, and their rice is always delicious. I've had their pumpkin, and I love it, but I'm not always in the mood for a sweeter side dish. Though I should be, it's spot on. I've tried other dishes, and I haven't had anything I didn't like or wouldn't get again. * Specials: I've only had the specials once or twice, because I'm usually always craving the kebabs, but the lamb piazza (or whatever it's called) was absolutely spot-on tasty. I had a chicken dish once, too, also don't rightly remember the name, but you can probably always count on the daily specials being fantastic. Also, they're a much faster option if you're in a hurry, since they're already made ahead of time. They're usually stews or some such dish. Overall, a great spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch or dinner, or take-out for the home or office. If you're in a hurry, just grab a curry! (Sort of like curry, just go with it).

***VOTE: Best Kabob in Baltimore area Chill atmosphere-order at the front and they will bring you your food. There is a significant wait for kabob, but they made it to order for the juiciest most flavorful kabob in town! LOVE the chicken kabob (so moist) and the yogurt sauce is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I've never had anything like this one - is basically any other yogurt sauce on steroids with a nice spicy kick. This place is no frills but fabulous, just how i like it.

I got the Kofta Kabob with eggplant on the side. First, the kofta kabob was chewy and had no flavor. I suspect it wasnt fresh. The eggplant was cold. The service is rude. I use to come here all the time with my brother and it was the best. I am just applaud at how much this business has gone downhill. I suppose I am now again on the hunt for a good afghani place.

  • Lauren M.

Not the same as the Maiwand chain in Columbia. They didn't have the veggie platter, which was disappointing. The food was okay, but was premade and sitting up front in chafing dishes. We ordered samosas to start our meal and were warned that they were fresh out of the oven and hot, but when we sat down less than 30 seconds later, they were only room temperature, so I question how fresh they really were. I'd eat there if I had to, but it's nothing I would crave.

Yummyness! Good Food! I tried the side of pumpkin on a limb but ended up being the most delicious pumpkin dish Ive tasted. They top it with ground beef and the flavor is delicious! Kabobs etc are very tasty too! A tad overpriced for lunch so I deducted a star but overall I would recommend.

I've been looking for a kabob restaurant in MD for so long and I have finally come across one where I can bring my family and friends! The taste of these kabobs are beyond belief with fresh bread and a choice of many different sides ( all good). I had the chicken kabob with chickpeas and rice and I was blown away! The pricing was was worth every penny and the customer service was remarkable. Definitively a hidden gem!

Picked up large carry out order for the super bowl party, guests loved it. Try the samosas they are amazing. I will be back soon for some more

Love, love this place. I usually order the chicken Tikka Kabbob with the bone in. This place never disappoints. Their chicken is succulent and juicy, seasoned to perfection. My go to side dish is their pumpkin, slightly sweetened. Not a fan of their yogurt sauce that goes with the pumpkin, but one should try it just to see if it's to their taste. You also get their bread which is frwshly made. I usually call in the order so I can be in and out the door. They have daily specials, but I haven't tried any since I can't resist their chicken tikka. Their prices are reasonable. I am picky about my food and this place meets my taste.

  • Katie B.

Flavorful and plentiful Afghani food at pretty reasonable prices. The chicken Kabob is all white meat, well seasoned, and moist. The cinnamon flavored rice is a delicious accompaniment, along with the lettuce, cucumber, and tomato side salad. Highly recommend the bowlawni as an appetizer to share with up to three others. It's similar to an Indian samosa, stuffed with seasoned potatoes, but the pastry is more like a fried Chinese wonton. It's like a Middle Eastern journey for your taste buds!

Dear Maiwand, will you please marry me? Because I love you. I get take out occasionally from this place and always thought the food was very good. But today was outstanding. I got the vegetable platter - chick peas, rice, spinach, eggplant, lentils, potatoes and peas, pumpkin and homemade bread. This dish was unbelievable, beyond delicious. Every veggie had yummy spices, very savory, I don't know which one is the best. The bread is fresh made with a delicious green sauce to dip it in. I can't really describe how good it is because I don't know what spices they use or how they make it so good. It was $10.59. I've had their chicken kabobs in the past and they are also excellent. I'd recommend going there early (11-11:30) or calling your order in as they get busy. But the food is some of the best I've had in Maryland, simply awesome!

This place was pretty good, but very small portion. Service was good, and the food was amazing. I was so sad when all my food quickly went into my stomach. This place is pretty loud but maybe because there was a 20+ people party when i came. Overall, okay. Just wish the portion was larger.

  • Carmen S.

Really enjoyed the food. My only problem was the amount of time it took for the wrap to be ready. The server went to the table next to me by mistake but thank goodness they had ordered something else :) will definitively visit again!

Best place to get Afghan food. Warm nans(bread) the kabobs are the most delicious I've ever had and the egg plant is my favorite. Quick and friendly service I would say.

Great find! We loved everything we had. I'd definitely recommend the vegetable platter (includes pumpkin, eggplant, chickpeas, spinach, potatoes, rice and bread) as well as the chicken tikka.

  • Izzat A.

My goodness. Those two words best describe this place. Went here for dinner last weekend and it was absolutely phenomenal. Place isn't very fancy but they make up for it with great service and even better food. Came here for iftar, which is the breaking of the fast during Ramadan. Wife and I ordered chicken malai kabobs and salmon for her. While we were waiting, I asked if we could get some sides to break our fast with. The cashier happily gave us generous portions of rice, spinach and lentils for free. Talk about amazing customer service. We gout our food and the malai kabobs were amazing. Super tender and flavorful. Wife loved her salmon as well. It was seasoned perfectly. They gave lots of rice and salad as well. Prices are very fair. This place is kind of far from DC, but well worth the drive. Better food than Ravi Kabob and Kabob Palace. Our new go to spot.

The Pumpkin is always great and we also love the Aushak. If we've done our exercise for the day we might even splurge on Bowlani or a Samosa!

Definitely a spot that the family and I order from on a more frequent basis. I honestly didn't even know this restaurant had been here for so long. Unfortunately, we would have to travel to the Arundel Mills location, just for their great recipe! Super excited they have a location that's close to my home!!

    (5)
  • Ali M.

Yum yum yum! I always call in and take it to go and each time it's amazing. I get the chicken kabob with extra sides of the green sauce. I swear I could drink it! Best kabob place hands down

  • Peggy B.

We went there for dinner after reading reviews on YELP. I had the vegetable platter which was really good. My husband had the chicken kabobs which were good too but a little more ordinary. We will go again. One of those hole-in-a-wall yummy places.

    (4)
  • Greg S.

A friend and I happened upon this place yesterday totally by accident and I must say, it was certainly a big win for us. While the decor wasn't what we were there for, we were both amazed at how good the Beef and Chicken Kabobs were... the entire meal, everything tasted wonderful. We thanked them as we left, both being completely amazed at our good fortune. I'm sure we'll see them again.

  • Chris K.

The food was great. Sampled the different Kabobs and the pumpkin and potato appetizers.

  • Alexander S.

Absolutely fantastically well seasoned. I love my flavours turned up to 11, and Middle Eastern food always ticks that for me. Their kofta was so tender and well seasoned. But ecen the sides were great too. The rice with some spice and warm seasonings like cardamom and raisins. Salad with a wonderful yogurt and mint (?) Dressing. Naan with a light buttery crust. And the pumpkin dessert is really interesting and a nice take on the food

  • Jennifer S.

I have been to the MK in Columbia before, but my husband and I had just bought a car up the road at CarMax and wanted to grab a bite to eat before heading home. The kabob's here are outrageously good. I got the lamb and my husband got the chicken. The lamb was out of this world. So juicy and flavorful. The chicken was also excellent but I am just so partial to the lamb. The chicken was done tandoori style and was actually a bit spicy. All the sides are also excellent, the rice and the naan are done just right. Yum!

  • Courtney C.

I will not come back to this location, ever! When we headed here during the big power outage, I figured all Maiwand Kabobs were the same so, this was probably a safe pick. Well, they are not all the same. This location was very busy, which I expected. I was not expecting it to be so dirty. We found a seat, cleaned the table and chairs and started figuring out what to order. I love the pumpkin appetizer at the Hanover location, but they do theirs differently here. I was disappointed. The food was fairly greasy, but cooked well. The soda machine was out of a lot of things and the bottled beverages needed to be restocked. I'm sure they were just overwhelmed with all of the people looking for a place to get dinner with the power issues in the area, but I'm not going to chance it.

    (2)
  • Areeb S.

Used to eat here quite often when I was living in Maryland. They have decent appetizers (Pumpkin is my favorite). Their boneless chicken kabob is one of the best I have ever eaten. And beef Kofta kabob is pretty good too though I prefer Persian styled kabobs more. If you see Waleed there, he makes the best Afghan styled lamb chops.

  • Johanna B.

Two people, $20, two apps (pumpkin & eggplant), 1 main (chicken korma special) & 1 extra naan, bellies full of delicious food. Hidden gem. Some of the best na'an i've ever had. Hole in the wall? Yes. Delicious food for a ridiculous price? Yes. Worth checking into.

    (4)
  • Erin H.

Yum! This place is delicious. I've eaten here several times, and each dish has always been great. I usually get an order of the pumpkin, cause it's sooooo tasty. Bread is good, kabobs are great, friendly service. The only reason I didn't give Maiwand the full 5 stars is because you eat off styrofoam and plastic, which I'm not a fan of, and there's no table service. But I can (and do) get over it.

  • Jennifer B.

I usually don't write a review the same day I visit a place, but this one is necessary. A friend of mine suggested the one in Columbia, but since this one is a lot closer, I figured it should be about the same. From the inside, it looks like a typical kabob place--not too fancy, but not a complete hole-in-the-wall. I was a little skeptical at first, because the pictures didn't look too great. I ordered the kefta kabob (ground beef) platter. When the food was ready I was pleasantly surprised! I love white basmati rice as typically served at kabob joints, but their rice was darker in color with noticeable herbs and seasonings, raisins, and what seemed to be small pieces of shredded sweet pumpkin...AMAZING. The best rice I have EVER had. I could've eaten just that and been happy!! The kabob itself was super juicy and well seasoned--not bland at all. I wasn't a fan of the salad dressing, as it was a little too tart for me. The food was a tad greasy, but so flavorful, so it was almost expected. I think the main difference in flavors was that this is an Afghan kabob place, while most are Persian/Iranian owned. The prices were typical of other places as well, but the flavor factor blows away many other kabob places in the area!

  • David M.

Very good chicken kabob. Moist not dry. Naan also soft not dry. Overall a step above others

  • Giocrux M.

Besides the great food, their customer service is great. The workers are polite and attentive. The food is unequivocal, taste fresh and made to order. I like the beef and chicken kabobs. The salmon was delicious as well. If you haven't been, go!

    (5)
  • Bradley D.

For the juiciest chicken, go here. I've been coming to this place for several years and it's the best around. Parking sucks, but take your time when exiting the lot onto 198 and you'll be fine.

    (5)
  • Chris Y.

The food is consistently good. Try the chow pan, it's the best thing on the menu. The beef and chicken kabobs are also very good

  • Stacie T.

BEST KABOB in the DMV... HANDS DOWN!! I could easily eat Maiwand Kabob 4 times a week but I at least have the will power to only eat here once or twice a week. The meat is very flavorful and seasoned just right. The veggies are fresh and the portions are huge! I can split my meal in half and get lunch and dinner out of their combo plate so the prices are beyond reasonable. I live in Burtonsville and my BF lives in Rockville and he always asks me to bring Maiwand Kabob over their competitor, Moby Dicks. Honestly, Maiwand has no competition. I love how they are family owned and operated so no matter which location you go to, you know your meal is authentic. Reminder, this is NOT fast food. Unless you order ahead, expect to wait 10-15 minutes... perfection takes time.

    (4)
  • Laura R.

The food here is really good, but you better have plenty of time and patience if you want to eat it. I went here for lunch with my coworker a couple weeks back around noon. We put in our orders and then sat waiting for an hour before our food was ready. We kept going up to ask them how much longer it would be and the response was always very soon, over and over...I was so upset over that, I'll probably never go back unless someone I know reallly wants to.

  • Mang J.

Whenever I see the name of this place, I don't know how to pronounce it, so I tend to think of it as David Copperfield mentioning one of his magic act implements or a panda's... Anyway, I appreciate these dudes' food. The bowlani are deliciously crisp, spicy, and not greasy in the least. The kabobs tend to be ever-so-slightly tough, but the flavor makes up for it. I have to say that the sauces are inconsistent--sometimes delicious and bold, and other times, is that sauce on my food? But let me tell you what steals the show: the veggie sides. Oh yeah, I will cut a batchi if it comes down to you, me, and the chickpeas. So, three stars for veggies that deserve witness protection, crispy bowlani, and delicious salad. Speed it up and serve sauce that consistently shines, and I'll add another star.

    (3)
  • Olivia D.

Really at this point I'm repeating what others have said but I'm going to say it again anyway. Lamb kabob yummy. Naan soft and perfect. Tandoori chicken ok tastewise, but boney. (note this is dark meat only) Cubed pumpkin with yogurt sauce REALLY yummy. Seriously, these four stars are primarily for that pumpkin.

    (4)
  • N. C.

Its just good... that is it. My boyfriend loves it, but I'm not a huge fan. I got a chicken salad from there, and it was just chunks of chicken on a bed of romaine. The dressings weren't even dressings - they were more sauces. And the tomato and onion weren't even on the salad but rather on the side. It was edible, and if I could, I'd give it a 2 1/2 star instead of 3. The prices are low enough where you should def. try it. Staff was helpful and nice. No problem using the coupon I had ($10/$20 worth of food). I would go again, but just for my boyfriend. If we break up, I won't eat here.

    (3)
  • Phi N.

The meat here is the best marinated meat I've had out of the kabob places I've been. I ordered the lamb and chicken combo. Comes with a some lettuce with a nice little dressing on it, a fair portion of meat, rice, pita bread, and some green sauce. I wasn't sure what to do with my pita bread so I dipped it into the green sauce; I thought that was really good. I'm pretty sure most people wrap their meat with it, but I feel that if the bread is the first thing your mouth touches, it takes away from the grilled & marinated taste that you get when your tongue touches the meat. The salad dressing was also very tasty. I still am undecided on whether the lamb or the chicken was better... they were amazing. So get them both! haha. The only thing I felt that could have used work was the rice. There was nothing special to it, I added a lot of the hot sauce.

  • Trevor R.

Great food, great lunch specials, but pricey. Totally worth it when u want some really good lamb curry or chicken tikka. You won't be bummed out for shelling out that much dough on a meal because you will leave full. It's really the only good restaurant in burtonsvill. The parking is a nightmare, always clustered and has not been paved in decades

    (3)
  • Key J.

Truly disappointing. I was shocked to discover there was an Afghan restaurant in my neighborhood that I'd NEVER noticed before. After reading all the great reviews I had to try it out. I ordered the Lamb and Chicken Kabobs, which is pretty expensive compared to other places I frequent. The wait was a bit long even though I was only the second person in line. Customer service left a lot to be desired, as well. Mocking customers on the phone while other customers are in your presence is not very professional. Ok...back to the food. The naan and the rice were excellent and that's about it. The meat was pretty bad. There was no flavor whatsoever. It looked delicious but looks were definitely deceiving. I tried to eat it, but I just couldn't. I couldn't even eat my leftovers 2 days later, hoping the flavor would somehow magically sink in. No chance. I had to toss it out. Too bad.

I discovered Maiwand when I first moved to the Silver Spring area-- I was brought there by my uncle who couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was. So, on his recommendation, I went. Boy was he right. The kabobs are amazing. The restaurant itself isn't exactly upscale-- although if you were to bring people with you and warn them that it was "really casual," you'd probably do ok. (I mean, it's not gross, just sort of spartan). Now, on to the food. Mmmm, the food. I am a fan of the boneless chicken kabobs and the lamb-- the meat is so tender and flavorful. Also, don't miss out on the curries they have. The pumpkin is different and very tasty (it's on the sweet side, so don't be surprised when you try it) and the eggplant curry is really delicious. All in all, the prices are really reasonable, you get a lot of food for the money, and the quality is great. For kabobs in this area, you can't beat it.

I've been a Maiwand's customer for past few years and was never disappointed in their food quality. I usually get kofta kabob or chicken tikka with eggplant side and can never get tired of them. If you are looking for some flavorful kabobs, Maiwand is the place to go. P.S. Don't forget to try out their rice pudding. It is delicious!

This used to be the go to spot in high school pbhs. Now they have jacked up the prices and give you way less food. I used the livingsocial deal and theyvdecided to skimp like crazy. 4 small pieces of chicken (instead of the usual 6-7) with no tomato. If they're going to offer a deal atleast respect the customer. This isn't 2005 anymore, there are lamb and chicken kabob places everywhere now that give you much better value and taste.

I brought my two younger cousins here for take out dinner. We ordered samosas, chicken with the bone and chicken breast. the samosas were soooooo good! I've heard so many good things about samosas but I've never had a good one until here. Each order comes with rice, salad and naan. My cousin's boneless chicken dish looked a little skimpy. The chicken tikka (I think) bone in dish was half of a chicken! I had two thighs and two drumsticks. The rice was flavored and just okay. The salad was okay too. The chicken was pretty good though. Compared to Kabob Karahi, the portion of the chicken is better and the portion is bigger. Samosas from Maiwand are also way better. I havent tried the sides from Maiwand so I cant really say. I do love the chickpeas, spinach and veggies from Kabob Karahi though.. The naan from here was like not so good pizza dough, did not like. I will definitely be coming back to try the sides just to see what they are like, and probably to buy some more of those yummy samosas.

Maiwand has to be the best kabob place I have ever tried. Their food makes me happy to be alive.... I am seriously not even exaggerating. If I lived in Burtonsville, I think I would have to eat there every day. Their chicken is absolutely divine. Their lamb is to-die-for. The authenticity and quality at this place is really unmatchable. If you haven't tried it, my heart hurts for you. I am so happy I gave this place a chance. At first glance, I admit it's not very attractive but trust me, the food totally excuses the lack of decor.

This place is amazing! The food is delicious, they serve large portions, and they have great vegetarian options! You order at the counter and they will call your number. The interior is quite spacious and can accommodate groups easily (especially since everyone can pay separate at the counter!) However expect to wait at least 15 minutes after ordering for you food (Kabobs are made fresh!) If you can eat chicken on the bone, the Chicken Tikka kabobs are great. Most of my friends get the regular Chicken which is still nice and juicy. I also like the Beef Kofta which is spiced just right, but can be a little dry on occasion. However, my favorite is the Vegetable Platter! It comes with pumpkin, eggplant, rice, chickpea curry, potato curry, and delicious spinach. It tastes great and you can eat it with your bread made fresh in their tandoori oven.

OK, you may not want to enjoy the beautiful decor and ambiance, because they don't exist. The food, though, is totally memorable. My wife reluctantly tried this after much cajoling, and became an instant fan. Lamb & chicken kabob combo is our usual- superb. Generous portions, authentic flavor, inexpensive... just get it to go! Trust me.

Great Kabobs. The chicken was the most tender I've ever had on a kabob. Not stringy or dry. The eggplant appetizer was excellent and a generous portion for 4 dollars. I want to go back and try the other appetizers like pumpkin and the others.

Working in Laurel, near route 1 gives you lots of chain options for lunch. Maiwand Kabob give you something way better. While there is no strictly vegetarian option on the menu the veggie platter, a large sampling of their side dishes, is exquisite. Don't miss the pumpkin or the chickpeas. I also suggest the bowlani - Pan-fried twin pastry shells, one filled with potatoes and the other with scallions. The lamb kabob, chicken kabob, and lamb chops are the other favorites of my coworkers. If one of us is going, another three will ask for carryout. The decor is humble, its all counter service. But it is service with a smile. Occasionally the TV on the wall will be blaring but as a few more sit-down customers wander in they always turn it down without prompting. The aroma that wafts from the door is heavenly and I really want to figure out how to bake the bread.

The Vegetarian Angle Your options on the menu are primarily limited to ordering a collection of side dishes. If you don't eat meat, these people seem to care little about you, which is fair enough, I suppose. There's no vegetarian main course item here. To be fair, these small side dishes are pretty tasty, which is what merited the three stars. But...on the whole, I would not go here again. If a place has so little interest in putting one thing on the menu that I can eat, then I have a proportionate amount of disinterest in giving them money. If you're vegetarian and have a hankering for some Middle Eastern food and are stuck in the Greater Laurel area, then I recommend Gourmet Shish-Kebab in Laurel, where you've got the luxury of options.

I've lived in Burtonsville all my life and I'm so sad that I did not know of this place sooner! My friend introduced me and I in turn have brought my other friends here. I always get the chicken (without the bone) and it's very flavorful and yummy, not dry at all. The flatbread is always warm and the sauce is amazing. Definitely something to try whenever you're in Burtonsville.

I've passed by Maiwand Kabob so many times over the years and now that I've tried it, I'm kicking myself for missing out all this time! I had the lamb kabob. It was a very hearty dish--so comforting on a cold winter day. The aromas and spices are intoxicating. Definitely will return to this place when I'm in the area!

This is my favorite kabob place in the metro area and I'm glad I don't have to travel far to eat there. The food is always fresh and very flavorful. My favorite dishes are the Chicken Tikka and the Kofta Kabob. Their naan is off the hook and don't forget to dip it in the green yogurt sauce. I will say that I tend to stay away from the beef and lamb because they're so easy to overcook, but the lamb is my brother's favorite dish. I usually get the rice and salad or just double salad because I love their yogurt dressing - of which they use just the right amount!

Hmmmm...what to eat? After deciding to pass up the Outback Steakhouse next to my hotel, I drove down the road in search of food. Being as it was storming like you wouldn't believe, I didn't want to go too far. Being a yelper, i knew from reading all these reviews that shabby-looking stripmalls usually yield great food, so I turned into the first one I saw. I was not disappointed! Maiwand Kabobs was a very clean establishment that contradicts the look of the strip mall. There were about 8 tables for dine in customers, or people waiting on their takeout. You order and pay at the counter, and if you are eating in, they will bring the food to you. There was decent selection of kabob platters and appetizers, and fountain or bottle drinks. I ordered the lamb combo, which came with 6 nice sized lamb chunks, a small salad, jasmine rice and bread. The lamb was flavorful and very tender, the salad fresh and the dressing was good. The rice was ok...a little bland, but went well with the lamb. The defining moment, and the thing that shoots this review to 4 solid stars is the fresh, made-to-order tandoori bread. This thing was HUGE. It dwarfed the paper bag they put it in. I think it had to be folded over three times to fit. Not to mention the taste. It was piping hot, with the outer edges a little charred, but in a good way. It was substantial enough to have a nice crispy outside and a moist chewy inside. Dipped in the different sauces, it was fantabulous! Best part...? Back in the hotel elevator, with the kabob aroma filling up the small space, a wife not so gently nudged her husband and said "we should've gone there instead of Outback" after she asked what I was having for dinner.

Maybe it was just the day and time I was there, but this was 4.5-star. I have had halal kabobs and stuff all over the country, all over Europe, and in part of North Africa. This was as good as anywhere and better than 99% of the places. I was there, it seemed, as they were just starting to prep for dinner rush so everything was put together right then and there and cooked. It was spicier than most places I have had in the US, which was nice as that is it should be. The only negative, was the amount of rice but for the price I can't complain much.

I'm South-Asian and one thing that I think is really hard to find around here is good kababs! With Maiwand Kabab I have to look no further. I always get the Kafta Kabab and my husband usually gets the Steak+Chicken plate. We both absolutely love the food here and the prices are reasonable. I just wish they wouldn't charge 20c extra for a tiny container of yogurt sauce. Customer service is also hit or miss although most people behind the counter are quite nice (especially the older gentlemen). Overall, food is absolutely delicious - good Naan too. Although I wouldn't mind seeing the Naans a little fluffier and softer. This review is making me crave some naan and kabab right now. Yummy!!!

There chicken tikka is AMAZING... the chicken/lamb curry is also fantastic.....they don't nickel and dime you if you ask for extra green chutney which is really good..... Good place to chill out and eat

I came here recently on a road trip - I meant to go to the Ethiopian place next door but it was closed so I came here instead. I ordered the chicken kebob and veggie platter. The veggies were from the counter and the kebob was freshly grilled. The food at the counter didn't look all that appetizing but when it was served up it was more presentable. The food was almost exactly like Indian food, or even closer to Pakistani food, which makes sense considering Afghanistan's location next to Pakistan. However, the seasonings were a bit different and so the flavors offered a some nice variety. The veggie platter was quite good. I liked the kebob but I prefer the meat to be well done - I realize that most people prefer more tender meat and for those people, the kebob's meat would be perfect. I wasn't thrilled with the naan - it was a bit thick and heavy. I prefer the lighter, fluffier naan that I usually get at Indian places. Although the food was good, the place itself had a sort of dingy feel and I saw a few flies buzzing around. It wasn't dirty, just sort of a hole in the wall, even though the building and restaurant were pretty new looking and in some sort of mini strip mall. I can't say I'd go out of my way to go here but the food was good and it did spur my interest in trying Afghan food again.

I've lived in Burtonsville for 5 years now, and have been ordering carryout at Maiwand Kabob at least once a week for the past 5 years. So I hear what a few people are saying about "inconsistency" but in all honestly, even their VERY FEW "bad/inconsistent days" is way better than all the food options in the area. First, Afghan food is more spicer than Iranian food so you can't compare the two. My preference is Afghan food (Iranian food is too bland). Yes, it's a hole in the wall and the wait can be long and customer service not 5-star...but you need to understand this place is more for carry-out so I recommend you order your food in advance for pick up. Their food is REALLY good....my favorite is the chicken/ground beef combo...and ask them to substitute the salad for another side like their chick peas, pumpkin, or spinach. While it might be considered pricy for some...keep in mind that this is more than enough for two meals...or a meal for two. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you like flavor!

Dropped in for lunch today. The lamb kabob was DELISH! Cooked perfectly.. juicy and flavorful. I only wish they'd put more onions and tomato's on my plate. Oh.. and the PUMPKIN with some slightly sweet sauce just made me hap hap happy to eat my veggies. I wasn't too thrilled about the spinach... but the piping hot naan which I watched him make in front of my eyes while I waited made up for that. Side salad with dressing was crunchy fresh and delicious... even though I live almost right across the street from Maurya's kabobs.. I drive up to burtonsville for this whenever I have the urge.

Great Halal lamb kabobs, spiced rice, and kadu, steamed pumpkin with yogurt sauce. Fresh naan comes with the meal. Delicious cardamom tea.

definitely only do takeout here because it's definitely not a nice dining atmosphere, but the food is excellent. i usually get the boneless chicken kabob which is seriously the best i've had in the area--moist and wonderfully seasoned. the salad and rice that comes with it is also delicious, as is the enormous bread (not supposed to be like indian naan as several critics here seem to believe)
