I don't get people liking Susie. She actually yelled at me several times because she didn't like my order. She yelled at me once for asking if I could have something without the mushrooms. My friend got yelled at for asking a dish to be extra spicy ("Is there anyway that can be made with extra peppers? I like a lot of heat." - She took offense to that.). For that kind of service, the mediocre food was not worth it.

Got the cold soba. Mmmmm Mmmmm delicious. But the serving was small. So also ordered the bibimbop. It too was mmmmm... *drool... Both plates were definitely fresh and tasted homemade. It's not a Korean restaurant, but an Asian fusion restaurant that happens to serve some Korean dishes. So don't expect any side dishes that are typical of Korean restaurants. The atmosphere is artsy and hip. The owner/server is ok if you get to know her and you catch her in a good mood. ... Of course, that sounds like all women, huh? =p

More Korean than Japanese but good noodles. Shrimp and chicken dumplings were very fresh on a slow Sunday night. Would return to try some other dishes. Wish they had cold soba...

I had been here a couple of times and always enjoyed the food, although a bit expensive. Suzie has always been a bit saucy but never mean to me. Today, my boyfriend and I decided to stop in for a snack. Like other reviewers noted, there was only one other couple in the restaurant during the lunch rush, so her treatment of us was absolutely uncalled for. We ordered the Tuna Tartar (I'd had it before and it's delicious) and the Korean fried pancakes. It seems like Suzie became irritated with us after she learned we weren't ordering an entree because after we placed the order, she gave us this look and said "That's IT??" She ripped our menus off the table and stormed into the kitchen. Came back a few minutes later and told us she was out of the dumplings. I suspect that she didn't think it was worth her time because they were only 5 dollars. She came out a few minutes later and put the Tuna Tartar in front of us and plopped the chopsticks next to it instead of giving me my chopsticks and my boyfriend his. She didn't utter another word to us until it was time to pay. Meanwhile, she starts chatting with the other couple about tofu. I believe that since they both ordered entrees, they were receiving preferential treatment. Anyway, we finished and she yelled to us from the behind the corner "If you're ready to pay, you can come up to the counter." No....'How was the food' or 'Thanks for coming'...nothing. Regardless, the tuna tartar was good, but I will never, ever go back. There are a lot more restaurants in Baltimore to support who actually appreciate your business.

I'll admit. The area did not exactly seem to be the type of place I would find a good restaurant but I was proven wrong! I got great food! Great service! I really don't understand their current rating. I believe this place deserves a four star minimum!

Although the food was good and we were happy to find a good restaurant to hangout, it all came crashing down towards the end. Apparently the server/cook was not happy about the tip (15percent, maybe the expectation was 20), and they made it very clear that their disappointment was visible. The manifestation of their very apparent disappointment included, slapping the card back, shouting at us in their own language while giving snarky looks directly at us. I have never ever witnessed a service/reaction that bad specially in restaurant business. This ended in a quarrel and no extra tip from our side. NEVER EVER going there back again

Cafe is gorgeously decorated in a boho garden-meets-art mosaic kinda way. This is a great lunch spot. Noodle portions are moderately portioned. I got a salad appetizer that was Korean-style spicy and it was DELICIOUS -- a great fusion dish. The owner was also very friendly and accommodating in a familiar way that makes you feel like you are visiting an old friend. Prices are a little steep, but relative to the neighborhood. Go for lunch!

We ordered Korean pan-fried dumplings for starter. Tasty but greasy, seemed deep-fried. I had Veggie Pad Thai, friend had Spicy Chicken Udon. Mine didn't follow traditional Pad Thai recipe, except for being rice noodles with some peanuts. Flavors were ok but better to name it "Asian stir-fried noodles and mixed vegetables" it just wasn't what I expected. The Chicken Udon was fine for a couple of bites but then came across as very salty. Couldn't finish it. Best part of the meal were our hot teas, which had very potent flavor, though sweet. Will not return, there are plenty of other good noodle places with better prices.

My husband and I were regulars here when we lived in Hampden and I do remember it being much better then. That being said our food was still pretty good. Especially my husband's Bibam Bahp. It had a great flavor. The service was off. We asked three times for water, twice for the check, and waited for about 15min for them to come get the check. Honestly I feel like if you order the wrong thing you could have an overall bad experience here and it's not cheap. On the other hand you could sit on the patio(which is really cute), order a really tasty dish, brush off the mediocre service, and have a good experience. Basically, it's a coin toss. If you're feeling lucky give it a shot.

I am very surprised to that people complained about the service here. When I walked in from lunch, I was greeted by a nice lady who I presume to be Suzie. After we were seated, her shift ended and another waitress took over. This waitress was also very nice and responsive. The food came out very quickly too. When reading these reviews, we need to remember that most reviews are written by people of the more extreme opinions. ANYWAYS, the food was great! We ordered the seafood hotspot and the chicken soba and green tea based on recommendations from yelp While the decoration is slightly avant garde, it made me feel as though the owner put in effort to design the restaurant. The music choice was a great fit (jazzy vocally stuff) I would highly recommend this joint to anyone looking for good (non-takeout) Asian food!

Nah - no way. Not no more. Suzie's has hit the skids, friends. Mostly empty, one poor lady behind the counter handling the cooking, greeting and table service. The fresh ingredients that used to be around are no longer in evidence. Neither does the menu have the good stuff I used to like to order. Plopped down at a slightly sticky table, waited for a bit. Observed all the other tables still sitting with menus and no food, and the impatient faces. At that point, decided to just cut my losses and find another lunch spot. Sorry, Suzies, but you're lookin' kinda doomed. Maybe Ramsey should have hit your place instead of the pink abomination across the street. *You* used to have potential, and not just a gimmick.

I've been going to this place for years, and I love it. Suzie gets to know her customers, and I like that she always checks in with me and comes to my table to chat. She is a sassy lady! The food is delicious. I always have trouble choosing what to get - if you're like me, just tell Suzie what sort of thing you're in the mood for (like, "Something light and fresh" or "I'm starving! What's big?") and she will give you the perfect recommendation. She always uses fresh, delicious ingredients. My favorite things to get here are the variety of teas (hot & iced) they offer, and I love to get the chicken donburi as my main. The home-made sorbet is always great as well. This place is so quiet, which makes me sad. When I go I am usually the only customer, or there might be just one other table occupied. There is a wonderful patio out back that is perfect if you're dining on a summer evening. I'm not sure why this place has so little business. I would say that my one complaint is that the decor inside is a bit out of date, and it's also very dimly lit inside. I think the wall decor in particular could use a serious refresher - maybe an update would help bring in business, especially a younger crowd. I love Suzie's and will be going back for years to come!

Back at this place just a few weeks ago. We brought our guests visiting Baltimore from out of town since we really like their food and we wanted them to be able to try it. When we arrived, the place was empty (I'm not surprised since the last couple of times we were there, it was never busy) - we were seated and given the menu. Not even 3 minutes after, here comes Suzie and her attitude. Suzie needs to learn how to treat her customers well. She was rude to us and our visiting guests. I was really embarassed! Her questions made sense but her delivery is really bad. Bad as in 'What the hell is your problem???' She was snarky and I honestly wonder how in the world is the place able to stay open. We got our food and ate in peace without her presence. We've decided to try to enjoy our dinner despite the earlier scenario. A few minutes later - we heard her yelling (in another language) at her poor cook/assistant. It was really loud and unnecessary. Sighhhh. We just wanted to relax, have a good conversation over dinner with our friends. The good thing is that we were almost done with our food and we can leave the place soon!! We've gone to her restaurant several times because the food is good. We would skip other Hampden restaurants and eat here. After that night I'm not sure if we're ever coming back. Be warned Yelpers. I'm giving it a 2-star because the food is good and I really hope that there is still a chance for this business to change for the better.

I love Suzie, she is great. Yeah she can be random, but she's a cool lady. I came in once and they were closed for a private party in back patio, Suzie said sorry and I left. 1 min later she yelled for me to come back and said they need some "distraction" anyway, as it was a surprise party, so I could have a table and service after all! I love the apps, and the bidam bhap. And she is all about "fresh veggies". Just look inside a spring roll, it's actually has color inside it. Been coming for years, it's an act respectful get respected kinda place, which I don't mind. She's not going to kiss your ass like you are a sultan. Go elsewhere if you expect that.

I am shocked when I read the reviews of this, a restaurant I have been eating at for years. That being said the food is fresh, authentic, and well worth the sometimes slow service. There are plenty of choices for vegetarians and omnivores alike. I recommend the seafood hotspot on a cold winter night or chicken soba

The food here was decent but boring. My ginger teriyaki chicken was something I could have made at home. My husband's pho was pretty good. The service was pretty poor. The waitress was very abrupt and almost unfriendly. It's pretty expensive also. For the money it was definitely not worth it.

I'm a little shocked at the poor reviews. I love Suzie's Soba and eat here allll the time. First, I can say that Suzie is a bit of a character. She might rib on you a bit. So I guess her personality isn't appreciated by all--and certainly not for the thin skinned who can't take a joke. But underneath that harsh exterior is actually a very warm person. The first time I ordered, I got take out. When she told me it would take 20 minutes, I was a little put off and she replied "What! This ain't no McDonald's." (This is what I am referring to and what others might consider as rude) But boy was she right! She makes her food from fresh ingredients. Everything I've had is absolutely delicious. I usually go when I'm under the weather and I don't even bother looking at the menu. I just ask her to fix me up something good and she delivers every time. I have never had bad service as Suzie usually sets us up nice and you can tell she's an institution in the neighborhood as she knows everyone and their back story (she grilled my boyfriend one time I took him there, but afterwards told me she approved). The place is decorated very beautifully and when there is nice weather, there is patio seating with real fruit trees and pretty lighting. It's great for a romantic date or take out.

Poor reviews are stupid. I love Susie's Soba. I lived in hawaii for two years and I can get a couple Japanese and Korean dishes here that I miss dearly. The decor is nothing short of amazing... I want my bedroom to look like Susie's restaurant. And the food is always good. I see these other reviews gripe about service.. but it sounds like they're all high maintenance and not understanding of small restaurants with limited staff. I'm a bar tender. I know service. And I don't mind waiting ten minutes for a check if I have to (Although I never have in Susie's.)

all the good food comments about this place is true. honey ginger tea was spot on, our food was just as tasty & spicy as we'd hoped but having to listen to suzie loudly & incessantly berate her cook throughout our meal made this a terrible dinner.

Such a gem! I've lived in Hampden for 3 years and have always wondered about this place. Got takeout for the first time tonight and was blown away. The food tastes so fresh and so flavorful! It's authentic and quirky. Let's keep supporting Suzie so she can remain in trend-hungry Hampden.

I think that the prices here are a little steep compared to the plating/decor/etc, but everything that I tried was quite tasty. I had the cold tuna with noodles that was $19. I was there on a friday around 430, so it was too late for any kind of lunch special. The fish was fresh, and there was a good amount of it. However, wish there were more veggies and a tangier sauce. My friend had the pad thai ($12) which was definitely worth the money. Tasty and lots of chicken. My other friend had the salad with cold poached chicken which was well dressed and a large portion ($16). Again, not sure if the ambiance and food justifies the higher(ish) prices, but overall, it was a decent meal.

I am sitting here at Suzie's having just finished my bowl of seafood champong and glass of plum wine, with a steaming cup of ginger honey tea in front of me. My head is swimming, my body feels peaceful, and I have an amazing taste in my mouth. Suzie is so cool, her food is homemade, wholesome and sustaining. Everyone can benefit from visiting here.

I walked into this tiny one room restaurant and was greeted by a friendly woman who I assumed to be Suzie. The crowd was very small, the ambiance was funky, and the first thing I noticed was the abundance of fresh veggies in the kitchen. Suzie acted as both head chef and server while the another woman helped her in the kitchen with food prep. The food was traditional, healthy, fresh, and made to order. The experience was so personalized, it felt as if she was a private chef cooking for us in our own home. I would certainly go again, but only with very small groups as seating is limited. Here is a breakdown of what we ate: Special: Spicy Tuna Sashimi in a Half Avocado: The tuna was so fresh a cold, spices were perfect, avocado was perfectly ripe. If I had access to sushi grade tuna, I would eat this on the daily. Vegetable Tempura (Korean style)- Made with fresh veggies, crispy, with delicious (and not too salty) soy and green onion dipping sauce. House salad- Made with fresh spring mix. Dressing was light and refreshing. Chicken Pad Thai- I thought this was just OK. It's not the Americanized version of pad thai that I expected, but it was still very well flavored and the portion was nice and big.

I can't believe the other reviews here--this restaurant was a great, unexpected treat for my boyfriend and I. Our sever, in contrast to the other reviews, was attentive and friendly. The service was a little slow, but no worry. We were served a wonderful ginger tea to start, and ordered some crispy crab dumplings. I ordered the bibimbap, which was delicious, and my boyfriend ordered this mushroom soba dish with spinach and basil. I ordered my bibimbap with beef, and it was missing when I got it. The server alerted the kitchen and it was fixed, no problem, but I was a little put off at how quickly the server blamed the kitchen. "Their fault." That's not really good restaurant decorum. Aside from that, though, the food was delicious, and the server was friendly, and the prices weren't too bad. I'd return.

The food would have to be absolutely out of this world for me to put up with the rude, inattentive, flat out lying service we received. And it wasn't. I will never step foot in there again.

The food at this restaurant is decent but the service is downright terrible. On the two occasions I've been here I've been treated to rude and hasty service by the same staff person. Tonight the waitress was trying to rush us out of the restaurant while we were still eating and we were the only persons in the dining room! I'm starting to suspect she doesn't like brown people.

Suzy's was completely unexpected. It's very unassuming from the small storefront, which features giant neon lips sexily slurping up a noodle. My husband and I wanted to get out for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and had been curious about Suzy's. When you walk in, you see a Marilyn Monroe sculpture, a deli case full of veggies, a bowl of jellybeans, and tons of natural (thick vines) natural decor. We went out to the patio, which was simply an incredible space. So many lush, green plants including an Asian pear tree in the corner. There was some fantastic reuse art -- old bombs or oxygen tanks (they look like the ones in The Hurt Locker, if you've seen that movie) as a giant bell on my right, and a flamingo made of old farm machinery parts. Apparently the farmer just welded those together and sold them at a Hampden store. I will say that there was only one person working there (serving and cooking). She was a little bit abrupt, or maybe just very head-in-the-clouds, or perhaps just odd. She whistled while she walked around, wasn't responsive, wasn't friendly, and did odd things to get my attention (like place an empty "to go" box on the dirty plate I'd just eaten from). We liked her though :) The food was tasty, albeit a little expensive. It was $15 for a humongous plate of pad thai (made without fish sauce for us vegetarians, but not without a little bit of mocking). $3 for tea, and $5 for 4 tasty, hot pan-fried vegetable dumplings. I think the expensive-factor is why Suzy's was quite empty. It was lunchtime, but there were only 3 other patrons there (one group). For me, the coolest thing about Suzy's was the decor, particularly all the art from reused objects woven through the outdoor seating.

Soba noodles should be comfort food. Here, they made us distinctly uncomfortable, which was not good. The outdoor patio was too cold the night we came, and the place was sparsely populated with diners, so perhaps we got a bad vibe here. And we were basically in the dark about what to order, since we did not know about Yelp at the time (so sad) and even now, only Rob N. has reviewed it. Suzies probably is 4 star or 5 star, even, if things align properly. They did not for us, so we cannot in all honesty be more than mildly impressed with this place. That said, it's a great addition to the Avenue scene, so we hope that it stays and attracts more patrons who will yelp it, so that we can enjoy vicariously your dining experiences!

We went to SS this past Friday with a group of ten neighbors looking for an easy place to get in with so many people at the last minute. They accommodated us no problem, and in fact I was skeptical because it was so empty. (I can be a food snob - the previous night we were at Charleston). I need not have worried as Suzies Soba was excellent. Food was delicious. Service was attentive and fun, and I thought the prices were actually quite good compared with other Baltimore restaurants. We shared crab dumplings and a tempura appetizer with peeps at our end of the table. Both were quite flavorful, not too heavy, and different than average Asian food restaurant offerings. For my entree, I tried a pork/noodle dish which was delicious. I was cautioned that it would be a bit spicy, which was probably an excess of caution as the herbs and spices were very tasty , but I could have actually used a bit more heat. I tried two of my companions' dishes - a beef and a spicy tuna dish, which both actually had more heat and were delicious. I would order any of the three dishes again (but ask for a little more heat in my dish). Another companion raved about her salmon dish (which I do not eat) Suzies Soba will be added to our list of go-to places, unless or until we experience the apparently traumatizing bad service of some prior reviewers (again, we had great service, which was cheerful and efficient, with an appropriate level of cheekiness - this is not Charleston).

Very expensive, but the food is authentic and very flavorful. I've been twice and very much enjoyed the dishes I was served. The service is confusing. There was only one lady there and she is not what I would call "friendly". She is quick and to the point. Doesn't smile. Doesn't engage at all. But there is something about her....can't put my finger on it....you can't help but like her. Maybe it's because she's an old asian lady. And they're just too cute to be mad at. Anyway, it's a great experience. I recommend going once and not taking things personally. Just enjoy the food, your company, and the decor. It's worth the trip.

My husband and I think the food here is terrific. Her food is always fresh and she cares about the ingredients-- tuna dishes are good and the white fish. Better and fresher than I have in many restaurants, Its an innovative and modern twist on korean food. Having said that some of the reviews are outrageous fibs or clueless (hey dude the dumplings arent pan fried, also its korean not japanese, wrong culture mister expert) Its also amazing to me that people show up at Suzis and then ask does this have onion in it? is it spicy? Having said that she does have nonspicy entries like the chicken dumpling soup. I love the cucumber salad, the mung bean pancake, the seafood hot pot and the spicy white fish.

I wish I could give this place better ratings, but since 3 stars is A-OK, I just can't. I do really like the food, but the owner has such a bad attitude that I always leave wondering why I just came back to be treated like crap....again.

Suzie is a great hostess, owner, and chef. If she was rude to you, you must have asked for ketchup on your soba. Food is fresh, lively, and inventive. The Udon noodles are amazing -- lively and delicious. There are delicious Korean and Japanese choices.

I agree with the other reviewers that this place is best avoided. I first ate here two Decembers ago and while the servers were about as abrupt then, at least the food was better. Also they had a young man doing the waiting upon; he is the owner's son, spoke good English and was professional. Sadly he did not wait upon us then but we basked in the glow of his attention to other diners. Tonight, I took a friend there and had not checked reviews before going. Not only the prices were outrageous, the service was non-existent and rude. I was treated condescendingly because I did not want beef in my food. We had the bdekdun(spelling ?) which is an overpriced fried hash of mung beans, cabbage etc. It lacks flavor. We ordered a pho(with tofu substitution) and a beef-noodle dish for my friend. Not worth $38 before tip.

Let me first say; if you are from an area where there is not an abundance of asian food choices or you have never traveled to asia or eaten at a japanese persons home... MAYBE you will be highly impressed with Suzie's Soba. Being in baltimore; there is not a lot of authentic asian food competition. The food tastes ok; and seems fresh. But it's just very bland. I had the yaki soba and dumplings. it was very standard. I could have done better at home and I'm not asian or studied asian cooking. Also; was my first time in Hampden. Was lunch time and area was so DEAD. yikes. craving authentic asian food-- head to Montgomery County MD

Came on a Friday lunch in September with 2 friends at 1pm; we were the only souls in the place. We sat out back on the patio, which was nice due to the day and weather, and each got our own thing. Usually I prefer to share food with everyone around, but that wasn't really the vibe that was going on that day. My friends got a pad thai with shrimp and another vegetarian noodle option (can't find menu online) and I had the spicy cold noodles. I have an aversion to paying more than $10 for noodles, unless I can watch them being made before my eyes --and I mean, with the pile of flour and egg and pulling and stringing and pulling and slicing and boiling--not putting hard noodles in a vat of water. I assume these were the latter; it is hard to tell with a thin noodle. So mine was around $8 which was reasonable. But the noodles were not to be ordered again. If I were to pick out the flavors, I would note super-thin vermicelli, Srachi sauce, slivers of jalapenos, and slivers of cucumbers, and red pepper flakes. That was about all. I didn't care much, since I was there to talk shop (it's a good private place for that; waiter doesn't bother you at all), but I have to say, it isn't a place I will likely return to. The other entrees were too expensive for my noodle preferences ~17ish.

I'm not sure how this place stays open. I went for an anniversary dinner on a Saturday evening. Though we were on the earlier side, we were literally the only couple in the restaurant. The waitress seated us and since it was supposed to be a romantic occasion, I slid my chair a little closer to my boyfriend. I was immediately scolded by the waitress who told me I was blocking the way (I wasn't) for the other customers (of which there were exactly none.) I asked if I could just move back over if anyone else came and she said no. The rude service continued on for the entire meal. The waitress wouldn't let us order what we wanted on multiple occasions and mocked me when I asked whether the tofu was steamed or fried. The food was just eh and the highlight was the tempura banana for dessert-- but really-- how would you mess that up anyway? I'd like to return to try Suzie's again because the menu does have so many good vegetarian options and its walking distance from my house, but would need a different server for sure! I don't buy overpriced noodles so I can be insulted over dinner... BTW: They have an adorable little garden patio which is a plus because outdoor dining in Hampden can be hard to come by. Not worth a star though!

Ordered carryout, so can't speak to the ambiance, but the service was quick and friendly and we all enjoyed our food. The soba with pork tenderloin was probably the overall favorite, but the pad thai was good (not stellar) and while the servings were a reasonable size, when compared to other noodle places the price seemed a bit steep. I would certainly go back but it's not an instant favorite.

I very seldom write poor reviews of any restaurant - I know how hard it is to keep a place going and how subjective reviews can be. That being said - yikes. The food here was less than mediocre, even by American standards for Asian food (which are pretty low), and way overpriced. My daughter and I were the only ones in here for lunch the other day. We ordered gyoza appetizers, yaki soba, and bibimbap. The gyoza (there were only 4 of them) were obviously of the frozen, pre-made variety that you can pick up at H-mart. The noodles were not really soba type noodles, were overcooked, and the sauce was miserable. The bibimbap was no better. The woman who served/cooked was by turns rude and obnoxious. When I asked for some chili sauce, she actually yelled at me. To top it off, both my daughter and I became ill later in the day (will not go into detail - you can figure it out). A call to the Health Department is in the offing.

As other reviewers have noted, the service is dreadful. Stopped here with my teenage daughter on a college visit to Baltimore and found Hampden to be a cool area to explore. With all of the other restaurant choices, I wish we had tried somewhere else for lunch. The lady (Suzie?) that "greeted" us (I use that word loosely, as her recognition of us entering her restaurant was a kind of vague nod in the general direction of the tables, which we assumed meant we should be seated) was not at all friendly the whole time. Took a long time to take our order and then she made it very clear that she did not like that I only got an appetizer while my daughter had a meal. The selections were interesting. The food was OK. We were not asked the entire time if we needed anything or how things were, which I find unacceptable for a restaurant. There was no need for the lack of attention to paying customers (overpaying, I should say as the prices were high for portion/quality.) There was only one other party of two in the dining room and a couple of people on the patio - and this was a Saturday afternoon, so I guess others have caught on and going elsewhere. Would never recommend this place.

Unexpected yet perfect outside seating! We were walking around Hampden last night trying to find a good spot to have dinner outside. Grano's, a few doors down, was packed but Suzies Soba had plenty of tables available right at 7 pm (including the cute back patio area!) The menu has lots of options but we stuck to the traditional Pad Thai and Pho for dinner. Both dishes were delicious and I will certainly be back soon. Why not 5 stars? Service was friendly but not especially attentive. No refills and the server only came to the table three times. 1. Take order. 2. Deliver food. 3. Deliver the Check. Luckily, we were able to keep ourselves entertained and weren't terribly thirsty. :)
