The chef must be sixteen years old, because fifteen year olds at Taco Bell could assemble a better meal. Shouldn't people salt a soup or at least add seasoning? The sandwiches were burnt. Perhaps that's why it takes twenty minutes to bring one out. I would recommend turning the toaster a notch down from charcoal black. I think the "salad" on my plate was stolen lettuce from my rabbit's cage. And the pot pies...well let's not even start. Overall, Atwater's is trying to act like a big fish in a small pond, but you are better off getting you sandwich, salad, or pie at another spot in the market, where it is guaranteed to taste better.

I've been there a few times. Tried their sandwiches - very good, surprisingly smaller than I expected. Carrot cake is very good too. Went for an ice cream last time and I was not disappointed. Staff is always friendly. I love the fact that they take good care of the ingredients, prioritizing local products and supporting the farmers in the area :)

Ambient little spot with a delectable assortment of foods and drink! There's assorted bakeries, meats, fresh produce and soups. The dining and market atmosphere is great! My French toast casserole was amazing!

I came here looking for a nice dirty chai, and thats exactly what I got. Outside of Red Emma's, I havent found a local, independent business that can quite match the taste of what I'm looking for, and Atwaters was able to execute flawlessly. Also came in on a day where they had their amazing apple pie on sale and was able to snatch that up to make my trip complete. Great service, great atmosphere, right across from my all time favorite Tooloulou's, which makes it the perfect spot for after lunch/dinner coffee. I'm a fan.

We stopped by the ice cream section. The honey vanilla was amazing. Some if the softest hard serve ice cream ever. The chocolate pudding was so reach and creamy. The strawberry malt tasted like fresh strawberries. Two very sticky thumbs up.

My gf and I have eaten in the Canton location, and really enjoyed our meal, so we decided to try this one while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the locations are not consistent. We visited at 1pm on a Sunday and they were out of their really good biscuits, but not an issue for us, we ordered other options. I got chocolate milk, eggs, bacon, toast, and grits and my gf got a dry orange soda and the caprese salad. The capreses salad had only three slices of tomato and two slices of cheese, definitely not the size we were expecting. My meal was good, but could have been great. The eggs I had were very flavorful and delicious, but the bacon was bland cheap tasting and not enjoyable. The grits that came out with my meal were room temperature, so I flagged down a waiter and asked if he would hear them up. Instead of heating them, he brought back a bigger portion of room temperature grits... The highlight of my meal was the amazing chocolate milk and the highlight of my girlfriend's meal was adding liquid sugar to her dry soda and making a delicious drink. To top it all off, the waitress that took out order disappeared until it was time to bring the check. I had to flag down another waiter if we needed anything. To top it all off, there had to have been 20 waiters and waitresses standing around, hardly any of whom were working. Final point to make this experience terrible. We are wrapping up, my gf has finished eating, but I still have a bit left. The bus boy comes over and plops his tub down on the counter, while I am mid bite asks if we are done. I say I am still eating so he just stands there watching me finish. As soon as I finish he tells us to put our dishes in his tub. What??? Why am I clearing my dishes in a restaurant?! Side note, the soup must be good here, everyone around us had ordered soup.

The food is generally outstanding, but the service is dreadful. The table service setup is confusing and unclear - some tables have servers, some don't - and the wait time for food can be bafflingly long. Beyond the slow service, they have seldom gotten our order correct. When we do not have a server at our table this can be a nightmare to correct, especially since the food runners usually want to argue that they brought the right order. Additionally, since there is no host-guided seating, the largest 6+ top tables are often taken by singles or couples. When you're bringing a family of 4 and guests for a weekend brunch this is infuriating. Atwater's needs a service upgrade badly. Our family are and will continue to be frequent regulars to Belvedere Market, but we're starting to avoid Atwaters.

Visited Atwater's yesterday. I was at Belvedere market a couple of weeks ago and after browsing the menu, wished I'd eaten at Atwater's instead of the place I had my lunch date. -Set up: you sit anywhere in the market area, but preferably close to Atwater's if you want to have responsive table service. Once you wander a bit too far, it's hard for the staff to keep track of you. -Service: There seemed to be a shift change midway through our lunch..or maybe our original waitress went on her break. Either way, the change over was seamless. Both waitresses were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items. The one "mess up" was the fact that we'd already told our waitresses that we were only having water to drink, we reviewed the extensive (more extensive than expected) drink side of the menu. We wanted to try lattes...after we received our food, we didn't see our waitress until we finished eating. Wished she'd come back for that "how's your food" check-in that waiters usually do...we would've taken advantage and made the drink order. -What I ate: 1. I had the gumbo which came with a baguette. It had a nice flavor to it...spiced nicely, good consistency. I especially liked breaking up pieces of the baguette into the gumbo to soak up some of that broth. 2. Pulled pork with apple/sauerkraut, and melted cheese on a cheddar biscuit. Now THIS...THIS was good! The pork was nice and tender! I could tell that they know their way around their breads. That biscuit was so nice, airy, had a slight crunchy "shell," and I could actually detect the cheddar cheese that was baked into it. I wished that the brunch menu was a little more extensive in terms of options. Many of the items were very similar in terms of what was offered...there were minor swap outs or additions that led to the price differences between them. All in all, I'm glad that I finally made it to Atwater's...The food was great, vibe was nice and casual even though the food offered is gourmet (a lot of places like that are pretentious), food was yummy, and it's a great date spot.

If I could eat at only one restaurant for the rest of my life, this would be out. I love, love, love Atwater's. I've lived in lots of cities but have never found any better balance of quality, value, and creativity. The Belvedere location has the most variety, but I like visiting all their stores for a change of scenery (Belvedere is very loud!) The staff are generally have very good customer service skills too. I hope the owners are good employers and work with producers/farms that also are good to their workers so that I can love everything about this company. I swear I'm not actually an employee, but I would be if I could make a professional salary! Anyway, go there, often.

This is a great spot to grab a quick lunch, coffee, or tea. Parking is not as ample during the weekend, and the shopping center area of Belvedere Square is quite busy but lately I've gone there for wedding related meetings and it's easy to get a table and the waiters all take care of the customers together and everyone is very helpful. Quality food, open market like atmosphere. Great for dinner pick ups (pre made food or grocery ingredients). Really glad this is in the neighborhood!

There is ample parking here, which in the Baltimore area can be few and far between. It's located in a market area, very interesting products, some specialty items that you don't come across often. I had a turkey sandwich on cheddar with spicy coleslaw on top. I felt that it came out quickly and our server was pleasant. We ate at the counter so we never had to wait for her to come around again and fill our water back up. My friend had a chicken salad sandwich and soup. Both of which were ok, nothing jumped out at me as outstanding. I had a dirty chai, which is my new favorite drink ever. (DIscovered in Philly last month, where has that BEEN all of my life???). I'd do 3.5 if I could, but it didn't really warrant a 3.

I think the theme I've experienced here is excellent and fresh food, but with service that leaves much to be desired and orders that take longer than expected to come out. I definitely do enjoy the sandwiches, salads, and coffee here. The pot pie is delicious as well.

My first time at the market...can be a bit overwhelming, but I decided on grabbing a stool at one of the several Atwaters "bars" I had one of the best cups of coffee ever and they even carry almond milk! A bowl of butternut squash soup with fresh mushrooms and kale was heavenly. To actually taste the ingredients is so refreshing. My waitress Hannah was very nice and helpful. I asked her many questions and she always found the answers if she didn't already know. Will be back!

Love the options. Love the options. Love the menu. Love the Folks. Food....i'm left wanting a bit. I had the kale salad and the rueben. Now to be fair I am a reuben fanatic so...maybe i've just been privy to spectacular versions of this sandwich. The meat was a bit plain-isn. Kind of a watery flavor. Have you ever made chili in an hour? Then have you made chili that you let steep for 5-8 hours? Taste the difference? Well that's what was going on with this sandwich. The individual parts were lackluster making it difficult to really get a delightful end product. The kale salad was good in a different kind of way. The type of kale chosen was nice. I like that kind of leaf...but it is on the bitter side...so adding something like a red or yellow pepper would have evened out the palette for me. The salad did have large chunks of beets in it which just didn't lend well (For Me). I ended up taking everything off the salad, finding my own salt and pepper, and eating it dry. BUT I want to come back and try them again. :)

Great place. Several locations now but our favorite is the original at Belvedere Square. Breakfast is by far the best of what they do here. In particular, THE PANCAKES!!! Amazing!! But FYI, they only have pancakes during the week for breakfast and not for weekend brunch. Found that out the hard way. Dining in is a major at because the atmosphere/vibe is really a part of the experience!

I used to be a regular here about 2 years ago. Immediately addicted to the chicken salad sandwich and kale side salad, I came multiple times a week for lunch with a book and would sit at the bar approx 1 hour enjoying my food despite uncomfortable chairs, cold temperatures in summer and slow-to-no wi-fi or Verizon service. What kept me coming back was the great food/drinks and casual but competent servers, who always seemed to be in tune with my vibe and give me the perfect amount of attention. One girl in particular I even looked forward to seeing and have serve me. Well times have changed. The food is still great (although since then they've increased the price of the kale side salad) but the service is really turning me off. Last time I went was last week for carry out and the two guys working the front food counter seemed very lost. One of the kids was talking with a friend for a while while a llne formed. I was behind two other guests and after I got in line nobody even addressed the man in front for approximately 3 minutes. The person who did end up taking our orders was certainly not an authoritative or confident presence. If Atwater's wants to keep its loyal clientele they are going to need to hire and extensively train mature, knowledgable and professional employees. Food highlights: Chicken salad, any salad, tofu banh mi, raspberry iced tea, their cheese plates, pulled pork and grafton cheddar biscuit, soba noodles, gazpacho.

Best coffee in the world! Best soups in the world! This place seriously is as good as it gets. Using local ingredients, changing the menus daily and seasonally shows you how fresh and up to date this place is with what their customers want. Not kidding, if you close your eyes and ask for a cup of whatever soup is listed first on the menu, you will NOT be disappointed. It is usually the best one and is usually a shrimp or seafood kind and all of their soups are amazing no matter what it is, go ahead and ask for a sample! The coffee shop at the location in Belvedere square is HEAVEN... Heaven! Heaven! Again, anything you get will make you wonder why everyone likes Starbucks, this place is legit. Is there a 10 star rating?

MMMmmmmm homemade chicken pot pie. It doesn't get much better than a pot pie chock full of veggies, potatoes and chicken, steaming hot and creamy with a side of greens to lighten things up. Delish. We were lucky enough to snag a table in the outdoor section during the lunch rush. Although it did get pretty warm sitting in the sun out there, it was really nice and almost felt like spring! Our waitress was nice, not overly attentive; she never stayed longer than 30 seconds, just long enough to get orders before heading off to other tables. But I get it, it's lunch time, it's busy. I'll have to go back and try some of the specialty coffee next time.

I went to school in Baltimore in the very late 90's. It was a different area then and while some aspects of the neighborhood have not changed ( places are still sketchy of York road) this establishment is Baltimore a its finest. Try the Rockfish Chowder. So Maryland but so unique. Rich, thick, little spicy. I could eat a bucket of it.

Oh Atwater's how I love your food. I was a regular when I lived in town and you are a must stop on my trips back to Baltimore... but today, a server of yours ruined my experience to the point that I was moved to review you... You see it's important that you keep your hustle tight as a server... that means that when you work a table full of elderly people for good tips that you not treat the other one that you're serving right next to it like you don't give a crap about them. "Hi, my name is Jen..." "Have any of you been here before?" "My favorites on the menu are..." "Might I suggest..." "Would you like cream and sugar with your coffee?" "You guys are like the cool glasses table... *fake giggle*"..." ...were all statements made to a table that was comprised of rich looking old people that sat behind us. My girlfriend and I were given a much different treatment. In fact, none of those phrases were uttered to us. Our experience opened after sitting at a table for 5 minutes unnoticed with, "you need a menu?" Then after another 4-5 minutes, we were handed menus and asked what drinks we wanted. At that point I thought our server was just having a bad day... When she dropped off my drink, I said that I was ready to order... but instead of being able to order my two soups and appetizer, she informed me, "Hold on, I have other tables right now." You see, my 10 second order would've taken too long to get... she came back 5 minutes later after the second drink was given to me by someone else, took the order and went away. A table of elderly people showed up next to us and were immediately treated to full conversation and warm fuzzies. They received all those quotes above and were given so much attention by her that I had time to pull out my smart phone, debate with my gf if I should take a picture of the server love they were getting, think about it some more and then take a picture of it. There was no waiting by them, and their orders weren't brushed off by needing to work "other tables." Our food was delivered by someone else; their food was delivered by Jennifer personally with extra comments and everything but a hug. Sure, she came over and coldly asked if "things were good," but then would immediately go back to hovering over them, offering salt and pepper and cream and sugar when the gf and I had to get our own. My gf, who is more level headed than I, and who wanted to go to Atwater's specifically after I told her how wonderful it was for her birthday lunch while we were in town (oh yeah there's that fact too) was pretty disgusted. Get your serving act together. Suck up to everyone on an equal level, or at least be smart enough to not suck up to only the tables of elderly people who look like they have money. I feel like we didn't have the look of tippers. Mainly because I dress as casually as possible all the time and my girlfriend was also dressed down to celebrate her birthday in a relaxing manner. Sadly, what could have been a really good tip, ended up being probably what your server assumed to be a self-fulfilling prophecy... On more than one occasion, my mild-mannered gf exclaimed "seriously?!?!" when listening to the over-the-top treatment the hopeful "big tippers," that Jenn was working. I was right there with her... And also, we were the "cool glasses table..." but she didn't even spend enough time to notice my black Ray-Ban hipster frames. :( You're better than this Atwater's... you're better than this.

Instead of writing a review, I'll share an email I sent to Atwater's for which I have not received a response: We gave up on the Kenilworth location many months ago. The service was just so wildly inconsistent. More than once, we walked into Kenilworth, were seated, and then walked out 10-15 minutes later after no one approached us. We thought Belvedere was the answer! Last weekend, our breakfast took 40 minutes to arrive. It was insanity. The servers were offering everyone free lemon cake as an apology. We thought it was a fluke and returned yesterday. Breakfast took at least 30 minutes to arrive. Our server never checked on us after taking our order. Literally never. We flagged her down for refills. I requested my eggs, "over hard, very well down" and asked to sub out the toast for fruit. Thirty minutes later one of eggs was runny, I was missing potatoes, and my side of fruit was an orange slice and maybe 6 grapes. It was a sad display. We finished eating and waited. She never acknowledged us. We went to the register to pay. Here's the thing: it's not cheap. I am happy to pay the higher prices because I believe Atwater's uses quality ingredients. But when I pay more for a sloppy, late meal, it makes me feel like a fool.

I've been frequenting Atwater's at Belvedere Market since the weather turned cold and I've been craving hearty soups, the soup and sandwich selection changes several times per week and the daily menu is available to view on their site mid-morning. The interior of Belvedere Market has undergone a sort of redesign very recently, and Atwater's now has two counter areas where you can sit: along the bakery area where fresh coffee, pastries and sweets are available, and the Ploughboy Soups counter that is unchanged. Add this to all of the independent tables scattered about and there are plenty of spots to relax and enjoy whatever you're craving. Around noon the lunch crowd descends, be forewarned. What draws me back to Atwater's a few times per week are their new coffee offerings, as they've recently added pour over coffee to their menu, and a shiny new La Marzocco espresso machine to boot. I pick up their fresh whole bean Counter Culture selection for home as well. Oh, and the cheddar biscuit is my guilty pleasure.

This place is amazing from coffee, bread, to soups and sandwiches. I frequent this restaurant with my gf for breakfasts and lunches. I rarely find a place that let's its ingredients shine like Atwaters (at least in the US). They consistently serve quality food and yet the prices of their dishes are definitely affordable. My review wouldn't be complete if I didn't mention the lively atmosphere and interesting table system. On some busy days it may take a while to be waited on, but otherwise this is a very happy place. One thing I'd like them to improve is their menu. It has parts that seem to change seasonally, but otherwise I feel like I end up ordering the same things too often (it could be that I'm going too often).

  • Noelle S.

The service is consistently horrible. I am not giving them 1 star only because the food is so good and it is a great atmosphere. I really want to love this place and I give them chance after chance, but the service is just so bad. To start, it's confusing whether you are supposed to order at the counter or sit down and wait to be served. Once seated, someone may or may not greet you within 10 min. The people who serve dine-in patrons are the same ones that work the counter, and so they are often preoccupied with the people in line. On multiple occasions, someone has come and given me a menu, I order a drink, I never see them again and so I go up to the counter to order. I rarely get all that I order (for example if I order a side of their quinoa salad or a muffin to go with my breakfast, chances are I'll have to remind them). And forget it if you need something after your food is ordered. Finally, the staff is generally just unfriendly.

Played hooky from work one Friday and planned to spend some quality time with my bed and four pillows but a friend bullied me out the house to come outside for lunch so I begrudgingly obliged only because it was free & I was hungry. I'm so glad I did! Atwater's has a small, intimate deli style feel and I liked how it was set off in the corner of the Belvedere Market so you can feel tucked away from the world. The customer service is EXCEPTIONAL! The three staff members were welcoming and knowledgeable about each and every selection on the menu and didn't have a problem making suggestions. They promptly and accurately fulfilled each request and when my friend wanted sourdough bread with his soup they even put a fresh loaf into the warmer just for us! The menu is just right for lunch, not too heavy but quite satisfying. They had an array of soups and they even catered to my indecisive tail by offering me sample cups of the different soups until I found something that delighted my palette. My friend enjoyed a large bowl of the blackeye pea & sausage soup and from the SEVERAL spoonfuls I got of it, it was very well flavored although for all the sausage flavor that it had, there wasn't much meat in it. I had the miso vegetable soup, which tasted great as a broth but the portabello mushrooms in it were a bit much and what you see in my picture is what I ended up not eating. I wasn't too sad about the soup because I devoured my Turkey Biscuit with pickled onions sandwich. The tastes came together BEAUTIFULLY! The teas they serve in a glass are unsweetened but the choices of raw sugar, and simple sugar in pourable containers were the right fit. I WILL be back to this place again.

You know a place deserves 5 stars when you think about it, dream about it, and praise it effusively to friends who've never even been to Maryland. That's Atwater's for me. It was a frequent spot when I was at JHU, but it had been a few years since I'd been back. I was really afraid that with my lofty expectations, I'd experience a letdown, but it withstood my expectations (and maybe even surpassed them). The curried corn and shrimp soup was delicious. The best part of soups at Atwater's? Yes, they are tasty, but they are PACKED with ingredients. Almost stew like. I also got a half chicken salad sandwich, which has always been my favorite. Elevated chicken salad is how I'll describe it. And, just as an anecdote of the authenticity of Atwater's. The bread is delicious and it's fresh... no really... it's fresh. I remember one time when I was in college, I called Atwater's at 1 am, hoping to get an answering machine that would tell me what their hours were. Someone shockingly picked up the phone, and when I asked why they were open at 1 am, he said they weren't, but he was there making the bread. How amazing is that. Atwater's -- please move to SF! I would eat there everyday!

The food here is great when it's not trying too hard to be different. The service is great when you get the right person. I keep coming back. This actually is a really good eatery. The soups are almost always worth the trip alone and the menu is constantly changing. The coffee is killer and the bread is usually pretty good. The problem with the changing menu is that if you get something that really knocks your socks off, good luck getting it again. I REALLY like that there's something different there literally every time I go, I just wish that I could get some favorites again that I've only been able to have once. The service is iffy here too, especially if you sit outside. I've heard from people before "Well that's what you get for sitting outside." Bullshit. Don't put tables outside if you're not going to give them the same attention that you give the ones inside. For the record, that sentence was calling out you namby-pambies who say that, not Atwaters. Back to it, sometimes you literally have to grab somebody and tell them you haven't been waited on. I think the thing that this place really needs is some kind of host(ess)/maitre d'. I'm pretty sure a few service issues I've had here just come from the wait staff not noticing someone just sat down at a table. That also runs the chance of killing the informal vibe. Maybe have someone whose job is just to check in on people and make sure they've got service? If they have it when you go there, get the chicken pot pie. One of the best I've ever had. It's a tiny thing, but it's made of pastry crust and happiness.

Great food. Parking can be tough during peak hours at lunch and right after work but it's definitely worth it. Soups can be overdone with too many ingredients but they still taste amazing. My favorite option is by far the out of this world chicken salad sandwich. Everything is worth trying but I always find myself coming back to that sandwich.

At first glance, Atwater's @ Belvedere Square Market seems nice, but not unlike any other marketplace eatery. The food, though, is a different story. My first time here, and I delve into an Atwater's Chicken Salad sandwich (a half portion was plenty to extinguish my considerable pangs) consisting of free range chicken, sweet Granny Smith apples, cranberry, and golden raisins all enveloped in a savory basil mayonnaise on a lightly toasted sunflower flax bread. At just under $5, it is an affordable way to treat your palate and your budget. I advise splurging the extra $3.50 and adding a Summer Ale from Tall Tales Brewery (local to Maryland), and washing it all down in style. Though far from unknown, as a local, I had no idea this place existed. If a sandwich here can taste this good, I can't wait to come back and try something else. Parking is a hassle, but most spots are free and there is a lot to explore here. Before or after a movie at the Senator, or simply a quick nosh, this place will surprise you. I will definitely be back.

I love this place!! All is so yummy and homemade and very reasonably priced!! The pork sandwich is great as well as the salads and soups! The best is their homemade ice cream!! Worth the visit for that alone!! I come here a lot and will continue to do so!!

Consistently, Atwater's produces the highest quality product for their customers. The breads, soups, baked goods, and coffees are all worthy of a try from any of their locations. I've bought countless loaves of their sourdough and sunflower flax breads, and tired about 10-15 different kinds of soup for lunch. I love the Belvedere location because the ample seating and energetic atmosphere. Can't say enough great things about these guys.

I saw John Water's order food from here as I chowed down on my 'tastes-just-like-heaven' chicken salad sandwich, creamy mushroom soup and homemade pickles. Can it get any more awesome? The answer is no, people. No.

This review is based on customer service - not the quality of the food. The food is outstanding - if you can get it. I've made numerous attempts over the years to stop by the carry out counter(s) to pick up a coffee and delicious pastry. Most of the time I walk away empty handed. Yesterday was my final attempt. Yesterday's experience is typical and I will elaborate. I stood in a line of 3 people at one of the two counters where you can order coffee and pastries to go. After 10 minutes of being ignored we all wandered to the other counter to see if it was better. Another 5 minutes gone. Several staff members saw us and would not make eye contact. The shop was not particularly busy. I'm so fed up that I will no longer permit my husband to purchase Atwater's bread or pastries at the Waverly Farmer's Market. BTW- all 3 customers walked out yesterday without ordering.

I'm been to the other Atwater's locaton in Catonsville, but I've only tried their baked goods, so I was excited to try the food during this visit. We tried the B.A.L.T (BLT with avocado on white bread) and two soups. The B.A.L.T. fell a bit short for us. It was mostly due to the fact that the bacon was more chewy than crisp, which ruined the integrity of the sandwich making it hard to eat this sandwich without everything spilling out. There was a nice amount of avocado in the sandwich though. The country white bread was nothing special; I wished that they had sliced the sandwich bread a itty bitty tad thicker. The soups outshone the sandwich by far. I tried the Eggplant Lemongrass soup (cup). SX is a chowder, creamy soups kinda guy so he made a beeline for the roasted pepper, leeks soup with crab and shrimp (bowl). The bowl portion is pretty hefty size. We both really loved the bread the soup came with. Beautifully hard and crisp crust with a tender, soft inside. Both soups were homey comfort soups. The only thign that was a bit "weird" was that SX's soup came with a topping of noodles. It was really hard to eat this noodles as they were quite long (not broken up so it would fit on a soup spoon), so it was a bit messy to eat.

This place has good food but... It takes forever (20 minutes +) to get out to you and it's a bit pricy. 9.50-11 for a sandwich and three little sliced pickles (plus tip). The servers and very nice and attentive so I wouldn't blame them. Around the corner you can get a decent sandwich, chips, and a soft drink for a similar price and no need to tip! There are better options in the area.

It is depressing how much Atwater's at Belvedere Square is the best food Baltimore has to offer. Which is not to say it's bad, it's just that my wife and I have tried many places around town, and received a check at the end of the meal and sighed "we could have had better food and paid half of this at Atwater's. " Their food is always fresh, delicious, but unpretentious and simple. Recently, there have appeared a few caveats: some items on the menu, including some of the new dinner entrees are not on point at all, and a couple of the servers have an approach that goes beyond lackadaisical and kind of into absurd territory. The rest are excellent, so I don't really want to paint too miserable of a picture here, but we have had a couple experiences of waiting inordinately long to be greeted after seating, multiple walk-bys without acknowledgement or eye contact, being given some other customer's check at the end of the meal, basically every step that requires the server's attentoin being an ordeal, all sorts of foolishness. I guess I'm not the only one that appreciates their food, and hopes they can maintain what used to be a consistently excellent experience.

Atwater's used to be my favorite place for lunch. I simply adored the fresh soups, and bread. Over the last year I have been disappointed in the menu selections especially from the bakery (my chocolate tart is no longer on the menu). The last couple of times I went to Belvedere Square, I ended up eating at one of the other food counters. Bring back the BALT and chocolate tart please!!!

First: I frequent Atwater's almost weekly. I like it. The food is good and there's a great urban vibe. But...and you knew a "but" was coming...the servers are the most accomplished in Baltimore City at avoiding making eye contact. I guess it's the fear that you'll ask them for something, or ask them a question, or ask them to go a little beyond the norm. Just this morning I was there and sat at one of the counters. And I sat. And I sat. Servers scurried around and past before someone actually looked at me and asked if I wanted something. Um, I'm sitting at a counter in a restaurant space, so, yes, I want something to eat. After that, everything was fine. Although no one wiped off the counter in front of me, which was sticky with syrup or something. So...I'll continue to go there (I can walk to the place), but gosh I wish the servers would look at the clients and take your order and not leave you sitting, and sitting, and sitting...

Atwater's is soooooo delicous! I wish they would open a store in the Bethesda/DC area. They do sell some of their baked goods at area farm markets, so at least I can get a little tease in between my visits to Baltimore :-) Their breads, cookies & soups are superb. I love their seafood soups and sunflower/flax bread. Their chicken salad sandwich is also pretty fabulous. I agree with some of my fellow yelpers... I believe that Atwater's has the best soup around. It's actually to be the best I've ever tasted. I give it 6 stars!

it's always an experience coming here for breakfast. Sitting on the bar stool with the buzz of students and workers makes me forget that I am in suburbia in Baltimore. I love the rustic feel and while the latte isn't instantly made as they do in other chain stores, it is 1000% tastier and made with a delectable design. Don't forget to pickup their freshly baked pound cakes and tarts. Atwaters, open more locations!

My bi-monthly "suburban" experience that I cherish! Have you been to the markets in Baltimore? This is just like it, except that it's not as diverse ethnically and everyone here is probably a lot wealthier. Yes, I just said that. It is worth driving all the way there for delicious food/coffee/and even beer. And bread. The soups are delicious, along with the crusty bread. You wanna milkshake with that?

If Panera Bread and a food market had a child, this is what they'd hoped it would be. However, it's actually much better than Panera Bread because PB is crap while this place has some terrific sandwiches and soups. Additionally there is a small market to provide an alternative to whole foods for some basics. Definitely worth the hype and interest.

Amazing soups! I got some sort of southwest chicken soup the other day and it was soooo good. I also highly recommend the chicken salad.

The best chicken salad, and sunflower bread! The soups are amazing a must try. I love the local feel, the staff are always down to earth, and helpful. Cant go wrong at Atwaters!

Great food, but confusing! My husband and I stopped in to the Belvedere Square Market to explore the offerings and sit down for morning coffee and tea before running errands. We settled on drinks from the counter at Atwater's, and then were asked by a waiter if we wanted to sit down. We ended up being seated on the heated patio (which was lovely!) with menus and full table service. Our drinks were fantastic, but the whole experience just seemed odd - we DID want to sit down, but not for table service. It's confusing to have the same waitstaff and seating areas for both pay-and-go customers and sit-down-restaurant customers.

One of my favorite places to go for a nice lunch. I take many colleagues that are new to Baltimore for one of their first meals. I am always happy with the unique menu options. I have been very impressed with the expansion lately to include dinner menu options and other items. I wont go into detail about specific items I have had, because I have eaten too many to remember, and the menu changes so often, that something else amazing will be available when you go.

Decided to visit The Shops at Kenilworth based off recommendations from friends who had been here for several years. This review is based off the eatery, not the actual market. The market itself is overpriced as is everything that claims to be "organic" and "from local farms." Setting: Not many shops but it's an eclectic collection of small eateries good for a nice getaway for several hours. Browse through each of the shops to see what local vendors offer. The small deli inside actually occupies a very small space. There are less than a dozen tables that can seat 3-4 people each. If it's busy, good luck trying to find some place to enjoy your food. Good news: turnover is pretty quick here. Rating: 3.5 stars Waiters/waitresses: Not much interaction other than the cashier taking your order and someone bringing your food out. Difficult to assess at this point. You do get service with a smile though. Rating: 2-3 stars. Food: DELICIOUS. I'm not normally a big fan of sandwiches and reluctantly ordered one because it was the only thing on the menu that could satisfy my appetite. Boy was I wrong. I ordered the Grilled Pastrami Reuben. The bread was crunchy along it's crust but chewy in the middle, yet dense enough to lock in all the flavor of the meat and condiments without worry of soaking through and being left with soggy dough. The meat itself was thick cut and paradoxically tender. We also ordered a soup with diced vegetables and chunks of crab (not sure if it's on the menu anymore). Hot, perfectly salted. My only critique: too much broth, not enough substance. Rating: 4.5 stars. Drinks: Just water. Sorry. Rating: incomplete Recommendation. Eat!

I've watched Atwater's take over Belvedere Square inch by inch and stand by stand over the last ten years. It's nice that you can get all of their products from pretty much all of the tables, now. I don't make it up there nearly as often these days, but I did eat in other day, and the chicken soup and turkey biscuit hit the spot. It's definitely a bastion of privilege, make no mistake, but such is the price of quality and ethics in food out. If I were closer I'd probably eat here four times a week, and that's not an exaggeration.

Their soups for lunch are unbeatable. Comes with a wedge of fresh bread, so filling, excellent value. My only quibble? I wish I could get my Diet Coke with lunch!

The food is fine, always fresh, and a little pricey ($12 for a turkey sandwich and a cup of coffee). I have to question the person managing the floor staff, however, based on my last two visits. On Father's Day a server who was visibly ill (I guessed hungover) was sleeping it off near the main entrance, using the high top counter as his pillow. Regardless of whether he was partying or had a virus, he needed to be sent home, not to the main area where customers are dining. The next month I saw an employee wearing an absolutely filthy baseball hat on their head. The white front panel was covered in dirt and a bird feather was sticking out of the side. At first I figured she was a farm worker delivering produce, but nope, she was serving food in that thing. Whether or not it's fair, some people consider bird feathers to be dirty. Based on the condition of the hat, I'm guessing the feather had not been washed either. Admittedly these are petty complaints that have less to do with the food or service and more to do with the professional standards management applies to employees.

The best soup I've ever had, every time! They always have a bunch of new selections of soup/sandwiches and pair them just perfectly. I've never met anyone who didn't love the food. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the limited, cramped seating. I've had issues w/ seating everytime I've been. There are only a few tables and people tend to sit for a long time, leaving you to linger around and try to pounce on one. The noise level is too high to have a nice little convo with a friend, but it's not because of Atwater's itself, but just the fact it's inside of a big market w/ many vendors. Because of that, it can also be tricky to find parking. If you are in the mood for a tasty, healthy, semi-light meal of soups/sandwiches, skip the national chains and go here instead! They really care about what they serve and it's worth the table wait.

Always heard great reviews about Atwater's and we were not disappointed. We each enjoyed a salad and sandwich. Beautifully fresh salad - with great taste- wonderful sandwiches. The lemonade was out-of-this-world!! Stop in to enjoy a great sandwich and salad!!

Been going to Atwater's for years, and never been disappointed. I find it and the surrounding stalls to be the best of a uniquely Baltimore market, dinning experience. But the reason for this review is that Atwater's now has beer (on tap) and wine. Yet another good reason to go to Belvedere Square for something other than brunch.

  • Doug G.

Never understood what the fuss was all about. Expensive as hell for what you get. A strange juxtaposition of rich, pretentious white people in an otherwise shoddy, terribly neglected Baltimore neighborhood. The security that "watch" over the premises are neglectful -- car break-ins happen all the time, even in the covered garage upstairs.

I rarely go to Atwater's for lunch. Their food (and root beer) are fantastic, but honestly, I just stop by to grab their bread or milk. Their breads are probably the best I've ever brought home, and I usually stop at Atwater's the night before Christmas or Thanksgiving, and serve their bread with holiday meals. There's nothing really much to say - just look at the photo I posted, and go.

This market/eatery is nestled in Belvedere Square, an upscale bunch of stores and restaurants that pops up somewhat randomly after driving through some downtrodden neighborhoods along York Road. Having gone here many times before, I'd say it gets a solid 4 stars. Yes, the food is not exactly cheap, but it is a local business that utilizes fresh (and often local) ingredients. And to be honest, their soups and sandwiches are not THAT much more expensive than say, Panera, while being significantly better in terms of quality. On my last trip there, I ordered a Corned Beef Sandwich and a cup of "New Orleans Gumbo." The corned beef sandwich was very respectable. There is a decent amount of thick slices of corned beef and is dressed with melted swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and thousand island sauce. The gumbo was interesting as it was garnished with red cabbage if I remember correctly. I've never seen that done before... but it worked. The gumbo itself had substantial chunks of crabmeat and shrimp. It was a pretty good gumbo but saying it's a "New Orleans gumbo" is giving it a little too much credit. It lacked the smokiness that comes from a good roux and could have had a little more spice. Nonetheless, overall it is a good soup to order. And lastly, the coffee here is great stuff. Had it for the first time there on my last visit and I'm a fan. It's in the front right side of the building.

Food was probalby a 4 star, service and the whole confusing place was a 2 star. Hence the 3 stars. First, it was difficult to figure out where to order, who was managing what, etc... as there are multiple counters and the like in here. I was hoping for a simple walk up and get my food situation... not gonna happen here. They asked where I'd be seated and then I plopped down looking forward to my meal. I ordered the leek and potato soup and 1/2 corned beef sandwich and a water... $10+. That was a tad steep, huh? Soup was delivered right away. 10 mins later...where's that sandwich? Oh, they delivered it to someone else who.... ate it. Nice. Quick remake and sandwich delivered. Then another one is delivered. What's with the service? The soup was good and rich, but the sandwich was really greasy. All in all a fairly decent meal, but nothing I'd seek out again.

Walked by on our way to an art gallery and couldn't resist to go in, the atmosphere is awesome and the staff is very knowledgeable about their menu. The food tasted fresh and delicious, if I'm ever in the area it will be my first stop.

The vendor that sold me the bad asparagus apologized profusely. He offered me a fresh squeezed orange juice and spoke to his staff right in front of me. I am pleased as to the outcome and will purchase here again. This time tried the monster finger cookies and despite the green teeth for about fifteen minutes, I loved the coffee and the huge array of baked goods. In addition, there is an Italian store, fresh baked good store, candy shoppe, fresh juice, sandwiches and so much more. A must if you are visiting Baltimore, Hon.

I was witness to one of the most comical exchanges at Atwaters yesterday. For that I give this place 5 stars. The scene: Organic (naturally) produce section. Characters: A skinny, young blond, uptight, LOUD mother and her over-eager, LOUD (4 year old?) son attempting to have a little shopping tutorial for vegetables. Mom: CAN YOU EAT THIS CHESTER?! Chester: MOMMY MOMMY MOMMY CHEESE!!!! Mom: CHESTER YOU NEED TO FOCUS NOW REALLY HARD!!!!! Chester: I WANT TO HAVE SOME OF THIS NOW!!! Mom: YOU NEED TO KEEP YOU VOICE DOWN!!! Chester: BUT DADDY WANTS CHEESE, I WANT CHEESE!!! Mom: WE"RE GETTING CARROTS AND LETTUCE NOW STOP TALKING LOUD, CHESTER?!!!!! Chester:~whine~ *Mental note to upgrade to a cell phone with video capability From the pastry and deserts section I purchased a slice of the Pimlico cake-delicious! And the triple layer chocolate cake-so darn rich my teeth are still tingling!

I went back here just to give it another shot. Everyone loves Atwater's, so I felt bad about my three star rating. I thought that one more shot would make it better and I would be able to upgrade my rating, but the opposite proved true. I opted to go early on a Friday morning before the rush. I wanted to get a breakfast sandwich and, after waiting and waiting and waiting at the counter (with a least two employees behind the counter who paid me no mind as they continued about their other duties), I just left and went to Greg's Bagels instead. This time, I couldn't even make the excuse for them that it was busy because it wasn't. Even if the food is great, the service is so slow and rude, I will never go back to this location. Very unfortunate since I get to the market itself quite often. Too many options there though to be foolin' around with Atwater's again. smh

A friend and I went to Atwaters this past Saturday. This was only my second time there with the first being less than memorable. I absolutely LOVED it! They have tons of outside dining options for parties of all sizes, the wait staff (Justin) was phenomenal, and the food was delicious. I appreciate that you can still find a gourmet sandwich at an appropriate price in the city!

    (4)

Ugh, no. Chicken salad sandwich and tomato/shrimp chowder are obviously not what to order here. Both were generic, bland, and disappointing. This is far from gourmet and even further from delicious.

I've been here a couple times in the past few weeks and held off til now for writing a review. The first time I came for lunch and got the pulled pork sandwich on a cheddar biscuit. It was amazing, very dense but delicious, the ginger red cabbage slaw on it was a great touch. I like the ambiance of this place too, casual and large enough to feel that you've actually got some privacy, but the waitresses are attentive as well. On the second trip, though, I felt I was a victim of a bait-and-switch from what was offered on the menu, and what actually arrived at the table. The watermelon and bibb salad does NOT deserve the title of watermelon salad, because it has only two pieces of watermelon in it. Furthermore, none of the ingredients in the salad were combined into a salad, but instead plated in little piles around the plate. This method works for Ethiopian food, for salads, not so much--am i supposed to use the lettuce as a scooper and soak up the dressing/almonds? Next food screw-up was the fig and goat cheese 'sandwich' I got that was little more than two tiny figs sandwiched between two pieces of bread, a little cheese, and a seven dollar price tag. It should have been served open-faced (too much bread!) and with more figs. Stick to the cheddar biscuit and bottomless coffee and you'l be happy.

This review is for breakfast. I cannot comment on the coffee, soups, or sandwiches but I can tell you that the breakfast has potential. In fact, this place has so much potential it's a little frustrating they don't live up to it. The service and quality of food are good but it's strange that they don't serve pancakes on Sunday or that they don't serve french toast despite having eggs and a good selection of bread. If these things were addressed and the quality of the food was a little better (like Mintwood Place in Adams Morgan) then this would be our go to place for breakfast. Until then it's off to Miss Shirley's and Stonemill.

I brought my mom here for a lovely mother-daughter lunch date and she absolutely loved it! The soups were delicious and we were both fascinated by the huge pots they make their soups in. Also, did you know that they make their chai from scratch as well? The chai was also perfectly spiced and balanced with sweetness. Will definitely be back for more!

I go to Atwater's at least twice a week, so I suppose I'm a regular. I'd like to give it more stars, as I've never had any soup, salad, or sandwich there that I did not like, but the service is so spotty. A few of the servers know me and are always attentive and efficient. But sadly, they are in the minority. The rest of the servers are hipster wannabe teenagers who roll their eyes at you when you ask them for a refill on your water or coffee. I've been told that all the employees split the tips at the end of the day, so perhaps they don't feel particularly motivated by customer service. It is not uncommon to sit at a table for 5-10 minutes before a server even notices you or brings you a menu. Yesterday my server gave me a death glare when I asked her for half and half for my coffee, and I had to ask three times to get a glass of ice water. The food being fresh, made in house, and mostly local makes it usually worth the less than stellar service. I am addicted to their iced coffee and they make a mean latte. Prices are higher than your typical soup and sandwich joint, but I think it's worth it to have locally sourced and high quality ingredients. It makes a big difference in the flavor of everything they serve. You can buy breads, soups, a few salads, cheeses, bacon, eggs, and dairy products to take home. I buy my eggs and half and half here, as they come from Springfield Farm and are organic and grass-fed, and pasture raised.

Couldn't be better! I honestly like it better than some of the fancier farm to table restaurants in town. Everything is so tasty. And plenty of space at dinner time. Wish they stayed open a bit later, but I recognize it is not super busy in the evening. Was so bummed when Annapolis location closed, and the kenilworth location is do small--can't believe I never knew this location existed for past 8 years when it is just about as close to my work as kenilworth. Anyway, love love love it, so glad I found it and will definitely keep coming back.

The hummus on the platter was very bland really had no taste. i felt like I wasted my money. I feel the 995 price is too steep for a very small serving of hummus which wasn't good tasting. Otherwise the asparagus and other veg were a nice surprise. The waitress never came back to ask if we needed anything or to give us our check :I I took my coworker there for a farewell lunch, she got her usual gazpacho and chicken salad and it was good! I would just like Atwater's to take notice and not always coast on its "fame". Thanks.

This is one of Baltimore's Best places. The Atwater's kitchen cranks out amazing Soup, bread, sandwiches, and baked goods. Their stuff is so flavorful and consistent it is hard to pick a favorite. I constantly try new items. Coffee bar is also one of Baltimore's best. Amazing.

Terrible service! I sat for at least 10 minutes at a dirty table, which was the only one availableNOT next to an outside door on a cold windy day. Finally, someone figured out that I wanted to be served lunch and came over to remove the dirty plates and child booster seat. Being a cold day, I ordered hot tea and was brought a beer mug of hot water and a tasteful basket of assorted teas. It was a nice touch, but ONLY ONE BLACK TEA?. I thought that was odd. When I asked for sugar/sweetner, I was directed to the coffee station at the other end of the place. If you're charging me $3 for a cup of tea, and serving it with a fru-fru basket tea assortment, why should I have to schlep my hot water and bag all the way down the hall just to get it sweetened? That's unacceptable. I've been here plenty of times with friends and they always seem to get served immediately by the same waitress, an older woman with her hair worn up on top of her head, however, I don't find her to be very friendly or accessible at all. She wasn't my server on this occasion and I couldn't even get her attention when I was trying to get some service. The food is ok but as many people have already cited, it's not exceptional for the high prices they charge. I had a vegetable barley soup which i would call hearty, however, there was barely any soup. Maybe i misread the menu and it was actually "Vegetable Barely Soup!" It came with a huge wedge of hearty bread, which is a nice touch. However, I also ordered half a chicken salad sandwich, so I had bread with that as well. Too much bread and not enough of everything else. My bill came to $11.22, not including tip...pricey! After this I was sorry I didn't go to Red Robin or Corner Bakery. Atwater's is way over-rated, over-patronized and over-priced. I'll go again, but it will only be because my friends like to go there and I'll be going with them, but not on my own.

Holy Field Green Salad, Batman. Atwater's is the sandwich and soup shop inside of Belvedere Square and where I have lunch almost every Saturday afternoon with my friends. They have such fresh food, great sandwiches and soups that change daily. It's the one place where I don't feel guilty about eating whatever I order because I know it's local, healthy and natural. After you're finish eating, browse the market - there's a candy shop, a smoothie place, an Italian vendor, paninis, sushi, ice cream and hot dogs. So much fun!

When I lived in Baltimore for a couple years, I visited this place quite often. I came mostly for the soups, breads, and fruit tarts. Every soup and bread combination I've gotten were superb. The soups are made from scratch and isn't loaded with unnecessary fats. I would have gone just because they use local and fresh ingredients but add on tasty and filling..they're golden. I did not care much for their baked goods except for their fruit tarts. Its hard to go wrong with the filling so the criterion for me is the crust and boy..they hit the nail on the head. They also sell each of the breads they bake fresh and will slice the loaf for you. If you enjoy tea, definitely get their fresh (slightly fruity/citrus) tea they brew daily. I got it every time I was there and even order a bag for myself online.

I usually don't like sandwich / soup places, especially chain ones like Panera Bread, because they're all unoriginal, fatty, and bland tasting. Atwater's has completely changed my view on sandwiches. Their sandwiches are so full of flavor, so incredibly fresh, and stuffed with goodness. You can tell they put their best effort into making each and every sandwich. The soups are pretty good, too. Their menu boasts some of the most delicious and original sandwiches around, and changes almost every day. Every ingredient they use is of high quality, and it's all local. Right now, they have the pork / tofu banh mi on their menu. I've been looking everywhere in Baltimore for a good vietnamese banh mi. Atwater's put their own twist on it, and I actually like their version better than the viet ones I've had. Oh, and the fact that it's connected to my all time favorite wine bar, Grand Cru, is another plus. You can order whatever you want in Atwater's, and bring it over to Grand Cru and have some wine. Or vice versa.

I come to Atwater's primarily for the soups. They offer 4 different soups which are rotated on a daily basis (menu is updated online), and always have a vegetarian and dairy free option which I totally appreciate. In my experience, though, the soups with seafood are typically my favorites. Soups are served with a hunk of their freshly baked crusty bread. All of the sandwiches I have tried here are also good, but I find them a little too pricey for me. The breads are always amazing as well. My favorite has to be the chili pepper and cheese bread, it is beyond amazing. If you plan to come here for dinner, spare some extra time both for the horrible Belvedere Square parking lot and to browse the rest of the Belvedere Market.

I have to say, I haven't had too many lunches that completely blew me away. Soup and sandwiches were on the menu for lunch on this beautiful Saturday, so the boy suggested we meet up with some of his friends here. He said it was amazing, I was skeptical. Not really. He's always got some amazing recommendations, that boy. Atwater's is part of this awesome market that's got meat and fish and cheese oh my! It looks a bit confusing at first because you don't really know how to go about getting your grub, but you can actually get table service. So we settle and get some waters and check out the menu. I opted for a cup of the baked potato soup, which included broccoli, spinach, peppers, and probably unicorn farts because this soup was amaaaaaazing. This was followed by half (yes, they sell half sandwiches) of a turkey sandwich: raisin pumpernickel bread, basil mayonnaise, some type of cheese... I don't remember what was in it exactly and I can't find it on the menu, so you'll just have to trust me when I say that it was good. I wasn't a huge fan of the bread -- it was too sweet -- but it worked out pretty well. The portions were perfect, leaving me with just the right amount of yummy in my tummy.

I love this place!!!! Even since I moved to the area I've been looking for a great artisan bread and sandwich shop! The staff is great and the food is amazing! Sure, it might be more than stopping at subway, or some other lame sandwich shop, but it just doesn't compare! Everything I've tried here has been amazingly delicious! Actually, I think I'll stop in today, writing this review is making me crave atwaters!

Came here expecting a nice healthy soup and sandwich lunch, but was greeted by a mediocre meal. The tomato/shrimp chowder was too watered down and I didn't get the thick hearty soup I was expecting. The chicken salad sandwich was something I could have made. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but I probably won't be back.

Just had my first meal there. Cup of "Potato, Fennel and Cheese with Shrimp & Crab" soup and the "Atwater's Chicken Salad" sandwich. The hot chai was also delicious. Once a weekly must-have soup & sandwich place, Atwater's was off the charts in my book owing to their incredibly flavorful, diverse, home cooking-reminiscent soups (lovely rich broth added to precooked goodies to avoid sogginess) and very tasty chicken salad sandwiches (served on wheat toasted bread with craisins, apples, L&T). Taking a destination voyage out of Fells Point just to go to Atwater's (a gasp! among locals asking what-can't-you-find-here), we justified the ~$30 meal trip for two by the deep satisfaction received upon both sampling old favorites (e.g., scrumptuous seafood gumbo) and venturing into the creative new soups that changed weekly. (Of the handful of soups offered each week, a couple would be traditional staples and a few new.) Though I typically take my iced tea unsweetened, a must-try is their irresistable, easily-soluble, perfectly mixable sugar liquefied to syrup...mmmm....it does amazing things to otherwise plain-brewed iced-tea with lemon. New chefs, biodegradable corn-based cups, and transfer away from the successful model of always offering popular crowd-pleasers along with several new soups (hey, gotta experiment, I know!), Atwater's raised prices and started consistently having a skewed hits to misses ratio so my concerns of surviving a move from Baltimore diminished. All else being equal, staff is attentive and nice. The place does get crowded so arrive prepared to stake out a seat. Though the counter offers the best spot in the house with the view of huge wats of soup, there is both street-side outdoor and winter-enclosed patio seating. I do miss my old fave Atwater's and do occasionally return in hopes of finding the much-missed place it used to be.

If you love interesting gourmet soups for lunch, this place is a must-visit! It's not cheap but there are lots of intriguing and novel combinations on offer. It's a little bit yuppie, but there's not much of that in Baltimore, so I give it points for being different. I ate lunch by myself on a weekday but didn't feel lonely since I was completely entertained by watching the massive flow of different kinds of people in and out of this place. (Note previous review from Jim H. who also enjoyed his peoplewatching here! Rock on!) The dessert was the best part--they were offering this incredibly good, peach-lavender cake that will live in my memory a long time as a truly inventive and completely satisfying dessert.

Three words, one love: TOFU BAHN MI. I'm in love with this sandwich! If I don't have at least one a week I get cranky. For those who eat bacon, I used to be hooked on the Avocado BLT that they have often. The thing about this place is the menu changes frequently. Some things stick around longer, and sometimes there's just different variations of previous menu items (because of what's in season). The other thing I die for is the green goddess salad dressing, which I will literally lick the leftovers from the container. Soups are alright, but half sandwich and salad is the way to go for sure!

I've had consistently good experiences with the food and service at Atwater's. My boyfriend relies on their coffee supplies - it's the only place in Baltimore where you can get coffee that was roasted in the past 2-3 days, which is essential for high quality espresso. There are lots of great vendors here, and we've consistently enjoyed a variety of extremely reasonably priced produce and gourmet food options. My opinion of any business hinges largely on how they handle a mistake. I have an onion sensitivity. I don't eat them, period. So, I always check with my waiter or whoever is taking my order to ensure that they won't be in my food. One day, I ordered a salad, and specified no onions. They said, will carrots do as a substitute? I said sure, that sounded nice. When I got the salad it looked beautiful, but immediately upon opening it back at my office I found that what looked like carrots on the salad was actually a pickled carrot salad that was riddled with onions. I was not a happy camper, but this is a rarity at Atwater's so I picked everything off that I could and enjoyed my otherwise delightful salad. We ended up back at Atwater's later that night for a few grocery items I'd forgotten earlier. I spoke with a manager about my lunch experience, just so anyone with a sensitivity or allergy could avoid receiving onions on their food in the future (yes, of course, I was thinking that it would be nice if I could avoid it too.) He was horrified to know that my lunch hadn't been perfect, immediately insisted that he make me a new salad correctly for free, and told me not to even think of paying for the brownie I was holding. His immediate (and frankly, above and beyond) action regarding my complaint sent me a clear message that I can trust Atwater's with my business and I will always receive quality service from the team. I've been back since and have nothing but great continued experience to report.

Love their soups and sandwiches. I work right around the corner and stop in for coffee regularly. The employees are super friendly and the service is pretty good, even though it can be a little chaotic in there when it is busy. Great atmosphere.

My new favorite place. Their soup and bread were so refreshing, it tasted very healthy. Oh, and their price is right. Love it so much!

Giving Atwater's 4 stars because it is a fun place to explore. The food was just okay. I had the cabbage/pasta soup, my friend had chicken soup, and we shared a salad. Not the best soup I have eaten and I probably would not order the salad again. We also tried a scoop of the chicken salad and I do not know what the rave is about, would definitely not order it again. However, it is fun to walk around The Square Market.....nuts, shrimp salad, coffee, sweets were all good.

Soup and Scottish pie please. The only problem with Atwater's, is that it is a bit expensive. However, it is so good. All the ingredients are fresh and everything is made from scratch. I had to put a limit on how many times I went in last year, when I worked in Belvedere Square.

So the lowdown: The food is good. It is NOT cheap. Or rather, it is not cheap for what it is. But, what it is is TASTY, INVENTIVE, and FILLING stuff. As long as you are okay with paying a little bit more you will get good, organic and relatively local produce that's turned into fab sandwiches, soups, salads and breads (the olive and cranberry walnut are my favorite). There are two things that stick out a bit for me: 1) It is really hard to figure out where to order. If you are not a local I think you would be hard pressed (short of asking that is) to decide to where and who to walk up and say what you want. Well here goes, at least as much as I've figured out in my few visits. You CAN go directly up to the counter with the cash register and order what you want. You can also sit at one of the metal tables in or outside and someone will come over and ask you what you would like (though you still have to pay at the register when you leave, unless someone is kind enough to come over and take your credit card). However, if you want to order just bread, you can do that at the counter to your right when you walk in. They will ask you if you want it sliced and then they will bag it for you. Then you take it to the counter on the left and pay, just as if you were ordering a sandwich. You get all that?? Now if you want coffee (which brings me to point number two) you do something totally different. Yeah, I know... 2) GET THE COFFEE. Short of Woodberry Kitchen and their fabulous caffeinated beverages (for nothing less than 3 bucks a pop mind you, and that's just for an espresso) I have yet to try espresso drinks (at least in the city of Baltimore) as good as the ones here anywhere outside of Europe (though 'Spro in Hampden is creeping up ever so slowly on my list). SO good. Get the cappuccino. It's the right size (as in there is only ONE size), the milk is perfectly micro-foamed and the espresso is pleasantly bitter. Gosh, just get one, it's worth it. And better yet, it's not outrageously expensive. To order it go over to the Market Bakery on the right side of the entrance and ask the charming ladies behind the counter to make you up a cuppa. And throw in two of the tiny lemon scones (just a buck!). YUM. So yes, Atwaters is a good place for tasty edibles - at a price. But really the best thing there in my opinion is the coffee. So go just for that.

Yum yum yum! The breads are fresh and delicious. They always have excellent soup options also. You can't go wrong with their baked goods either. It's like a........dare I say......local version of Panera. The prices of the two are similar and Atwater's is better. I'm not just saying this because I like local food.....this for once is actually a lot better!

Atwater's is located in the super snooty Belvedere square where I live. I am not super snooty for the record I AM the exception.. I have been here a few times and four stars really goes to their chicken salad sandwich on sunflower wheat bread. This place is a cafe'/market where they specialize in a large variety of fresh, homemade breads, natural beverages, fresh produce, soups, salads, pastries and the like. Almost everyone will find something to suit their needs at Atwater's but again, the area it is in is probably why the prices here are a little high. Plan on paying around 6-7 dollars on a half sandwich and close to 10 for a whole. The shopping center is ALWAYS packed and it can be frustrating at times waiting or battling over a parking space so be prepared. There are pay meters along the street, however, if the parking lot is full.

Since moving to this part of Baltimore around two years ago, this place has become part of my nearly everyday life style. Delicious breads and coffees and soups and sandwiches. All offerings are seasonal and most--I believe--are made from local acquired produce. The staff is friendly and thoughtful. It's a modern neighborhood bakery, a bit up scale and gourmet, but the kind of place you'd want in any community.

We've been here many times for a seafood soup and veggie sandwich to eat at the counter or some soup to heat up at home. Fresh ingredients, great service. I am very picky about sandwich excellence, and they do a great job. We've been really into the grilled sandwiches lately, but any will do. Sometimes will order a chicken/turkey sandwich without the meat b/c the toppings are so interesting. And excellent bread! You can't go wrong.

Delicious soups and sandwiches. Stopped by for lunch on an unusually cold and rainy May day and the vegetable explosion of flavor was perfect, accompanied by a large hunk of freshly baked bread. Something like a mushroom, leek, red chard, corn, etc. with a touch of cream soup...yum. Also tried the vegetable with three cheese tortellini soup. Great service and casual market atmosphere. I'll definitely be adding this to our lunch rotation.

I eat here once a week. My whole family loves their soups. The kids love their rolls. The sandwiches are ok. The staff is amazing. Everyone is very nice and helpful. Coffee is good. They will let you sample the soup before you decide. They have four different soups each day. One seafood, one meat/chicken and two veg. The bread is good, not great.

Last weekend was so chilly, I knew it was time for a trip to Atwater's. Where else can you get such an exciting assortment of freshly-made, deliciously chunky soups? Plus, each bowl comes with a hunk of warm home-made bread -- last time it was pumpernickel! And...since this place is part of the larger Belvedere Square, it's so easy to follow up the soup with a fresh coffee, chocolate-covered pretzel or yummy cookie from one of the adjoining shops. What a great place for a lazy Saturday lunch.

I often go to the Atwater's located in Towson for lunch. I love their roast beef sandwich and their soups never disappoint. Yes, it is pricey, but worth it! If you are getting something to go, I would recommend that you call it in for pick up as there is not much room to stand and wait for your food. They always have their daily menu posted on their website.

Atwater's is the other place, besides the downtown Soup's On, to get soup in Baltimore. Go nowhere else. Atwater's is slightly more pricey, but on the whole the two establishments are equals but in different ways. Atwater's has sort of a yuppie feel to it, but in a way that is completely bearable (it's in a gourmet market that seems really cool but I've never actually bought anything there other than Atwater's). They have fewer soups daily, but their soups are full of inventive ingredients (for example, I once had a bean soup that featured brussels sprouts- unexpected but delicious!) that seem to be added while available or in season. The service is usually quite good, but it's easy to be forgotten for a while when they get really busy. I also wish that they offered a vegan soup on a daily basis. They always have a vegetarian, and that is 90% of the time vegan, but those off days kill me. They usually have a roasted veggie sandwich of some sort and they are addicting. You have been warned. I would have given this place 5 stars, even for its faults, based on the quality of the food, but then I discovered Soup's On. Either is a fine option for soup.

Amazing soups and sandwiches on their homemade breads. I'm fond of their chicken salad since it's not full of mayo, their cold brewed coffee will jolt your nerves, and you can pick up a quart of soup to take home.

A friend of mine who I was visiting this past weekend took me to Atwater's. The food was enjoyable - a lovely pork soup and a half of a pastrami sandwich. The menu is inventive. My major complaint is their prices are WAY overpriced to the point of being offensive. Atwater's charged 4.95 for half/9.50 for a whole sandwich. I was appalled at how tiny the sandwich was. It's not like a large hunk of bread or a roll or even a ton of meat. It was regular sandwich you might make at home. Coming from NY where you might pay the same price for a sandwich but you are actually getting some substance and certainly won't be hungry 30 minutes later. I'm sorry B-More you are getting taken for a ride at Atwater's if you get a sandwich.

Very delicious. Really excellent fruit tarts. I like to think of myself as a pretty good amateur baker, but these make me feel like an amateur. They manage to get the flakyness and moitness and right amount of cooking for the crust and not get all soggy from the fruit. Not fussy, just expertly done with good ingredients. Yum. Oh and the hearty breads are great. My endorsement for the soups: I generally don't get excited about soups, but theirs made me look forward to soups. Note: this is in Belvedere Square, so it is not a restaurant, just part of the market.

For what it is - a market that is committed to providing fresh produce, goods and services while remaining true to local businesses - Atwater's gets 4 stars. Yes, it is expensive - $30 for a bowl of soup, 2 sandwiches, a slice of pie, and coffee - but what place that supports local growers isn't? Plus, it is catering to the Roland Park demographic, so I don't think you should expect anything cheaper. Well then, what convinced me to overlook the expensive menu options to give it a "great" rating? The "great": - The food. We had a creole clam chowder, and it was awesome. I love good soups, and Atwater's has never once disappointed me. This one was especially hearty, with big chunks of Andouille sausage, clams, and veges giving each bite flavor and texture. Add in the fact that they include not just a regular baguette, but a raisin walnut baguette, and you could get full by just eating the soup. However, we had more than the soup! j also ordered a turkey and brie sandwich with fresh greens and cucumbers on cranberry almond bread. The turkey portions were generous, and all the flavors went very well together. I wish I could've tasted more brie, but that is a minor quibble. I ordered a corned beef and swiss sandwich on toasted country white bread with a side of coleslaw. The coleslaw was not that memorable, but the sandwich was delicious. There was a hint of Russian dressing that did not overwhelm the corned beef flavor, and the bread was perfectly toasted! Quite satisfying!! For "dessert" we had a banana cream pie finished with meringue. The crust was flaky, the banana cream was delicious, and the meringue was fluffy and light......oh so good. I think this was the highlight of my meal. Adding to my enjoyment was the "cold brewed" coffee that I ordered. Apparently, if you brew coffee cold and store it overnight cold, it loses it's acidity and becomes really smooth. Well, call me a believer in that!! It was definitely smoother in my mouth than regular coffee, and I have to believe that made it all the more wonderful to drink. - The service. The place was pretty crowded, but once we sat down, a server came and promptly took our order. Better than that, we received our food in 5 minutes! That was a pleasant surprise. - The purpose. Like I mentioned before, all the items from Atwater's is from local area farms and businesses. I will always support the local growers and am willing to overlook the price because of that. Bottom line, Atwater's is a great one of a kind market that serves great food while remaining committed to the local community. The only reason why it is not 5 stars is because it never has utterly blown me away in any aspect. Few places have. But that doesn't mean it isn't the best at what it does in the Baltimore area, and I think it is.

Very cute... especially when the waitress almost choked when I asked for the wine list. It's a quaint little place with a quaint little menu. Pros are the fresh ingredients, friendly waitstaff, and farmer's market in the parking lot. The menu was kind of limited for vegetarians and I'm also a little peeved when things show up on my plate that aren't the menu (eww cooked carrots). It was my friend's birthday and they did bring out a cookie with a lit candle (on the house). If you need a quick bite and want to support the locals, this is a good place to keep in mind.
