it is very family owned. its almost like watching the tv show "Alice." The waitresses are full of sass and personality in a good way. id rather have that then some sterile chain experience. The food was good enough. the price was good enough, and the speed of service was good enough. id say a cup of coffee, two eggs, two sausages, toast, and tip will run you $12 bucks. id go back if i was too lazy to make breakfast and had money to burn.

Awesome breakfast spot!! There was a crowd of people waiting but we were all seated really fast. Great service and the breakfast was delicious...the Jim Junior hit the spot! We just moved to Olney and the previous owners recommended Dempsey's too us. Would highly recommend.

Solid little hole in the wall place. Tastes like home cooked food which is comforting. Last visit I got the corned beef hash (the kind out of a can), an English muffin, and hash browns. Nothing fancy, but it was clean and yummy!

I know I'll get a rash of doo-doo for this review from my uber-foodista's, but here goes. I won't even harp on the actual menu. It's good, not mind-bending, worthy of sonnets or eliciting ephiphanies, but just good. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool foodie, but sometimes the heart drives us to what's good for it. This place fits the bill exactly. When you have one of those weeks when you want to go down with the ship for whatever reason, come to Dempsey's. No linen, no unreal service, no orgasmic food sensation....its just there, always, consoling, treating you like a million other Americans have for a long time. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, sausages, great coffee, real people behind the counter and at the tables around you. You just blend in and there's something special about it. The food isnt pricey and the parking is adequate. No outside seating, no ambience, no surround-sound 1940's movies or kitsch. Just solid, good food in a time and space when you need escape. Go. Run. Before you sink too far...:^)

A few years ago I used to go here with a friend for breakfast and it was decent. I like to support the local places. However, today was the worst and I'm upset about spending over $35 for a breakfast (not including tip) for 2 that was terrible. The good... The French Toast was just ok...plain sliced grocery store bread but tasted fine. The eggs were scrambled per our orders, and the pancakes were fine. The bad: 3 pcs. of bacon. One was way undercooked, one was overdone, old and chewy and tasted like onion (in not a good way). One was just right. The ham slice my guest had was so dry and chewy, he took 1 bite and needed a drink to wash it down. It went uneaten after that. The home fries are actually hash browns (looked like the frozen grocery store variety)...they were undercooked and 1 bite was taken from them. A lot of wasted food. The coffee was bad, too...unfortunately...I don't usually add sugar but did to make it palatable. I refused a refill. I should've said something but the place was crowded and I just didn't want a confrontation, especially with a guest. The service was fine. They should look into an exterminator as small black ants were crawling on the wall our booth was attached to. I can deal with ants, those little ones are tough to get rid of. What I can't deal with is bad food and a large breakfast bill and feeling ripped off. My fault for not taking up for myself, I guess. Obviously, I will not go back. So much for my attempt for eating breakfast local. I'll go to IHOP.

I love to go here for breakfast. The scrapple Is very good and the pancakes are awesome. They have a solid lunch/dinner menu but I've never eaten here for that.

I was leaving Montgomery General Hospital after some minor out-patient surgery and was pretty hungry so I asked for a recommendation for a place to go for breakfast. The staff recommended this place. It was OK but really not that wonderful. It was a diner type restaurant located in a strip center. Obviously filled with "regulars" who knew all the waitresses and cooks. The sign says it's a tradition since 1993 and I can believe it. The food is OK but, to be honest, I've had better diner food. The staff was friendly enough but you could tell that unless you were one of the regulars you were from "out of town", if you get my drift. They have booze in case you like to drink and they serve breakfast all day. The tables are a little cramped and I really felt that the conversation I was having with my wife was being overheard by the people sitting literally 3 feet away from us. Bottom line: It's OK. It's obviously a "tradition" but you can probably do better in this part of Montgomery County. I think.

Great for breakfast, good for lunch. Dinner is hit and miss. Weekend breakfast can get very crowded so pick your times carefully.

Ate breakfast and chatted with old friends here, which attributed to us overstaying our welcome. Our waitress walked by, mumbled something about us still being there under her breath. Her tactic definitely worked as we left promptly after that. I thought breakfast was decent. Ordered waffles, eggs, bacon. Bacon was especially magnificent. Waffles and eggs were simply waffles and eggs, nothing fancy. Got their hot tea, and I love how it came in a novelty mug on a saucer with a doily. Small diner feel. The place was bumbling with a steady flow of customers. It must be a go-to spot for the locals in the area. I'd return for the sake of supporting a local businesses over a Denny's or IHOP (even though the food is virtually the same). I'd be mindful to leave immediately after you eat and perhaps having coffee someplace else for conversation.

This place is the perfect small town diner. Your expectations walking in need to be that you came here for a greasy spoon experience (interpreted in the best way possible) and you get it. The food is good and the place is always crowded for breakfast - probably the best meal they serve. But everything is good. Here is a little secret...if you ever ate at Holly's on the eastern shore on the way to OC and had their AMAZING shakes, Dempsey's makes the exact same thing. Slim Jim Fat Boy breakfast w a chocolate shake to wash it down! That's real eatin" But its not cheap - that's ok because that is what is keeping doors to places like this open. Worth the extra money.

Well it takes forever to get seated and when you finally do the food is decent, but overpriced for this 1960's place in the country.

Not a huge menu but always something delicious on your plate. Our weekend breakfast place.

The food and staff are great at this place, and they always remember us. Our young son LOVES Miss Audrey, Nikki and Mel especially. There is something for everyone here. Soups are also always really good and I enjoy the tuna salad salad as well. I just wish it was bigger and able to accommodate more people. Just got to get there early I guess!

Friendliest staff in town. Decor is nothing to really brag about, but the food's good, and the staff is outstanding. It's a neat place, with great local color.

Meh. The people were sure nice but the food was unremarkable. The omelet was a bunch of fried stuff (sausage, bacon, peppers, etc.) with an egg blanket on top. Chipped beef was...chipped beef (it's kinda hard to mess up). French Toast was okay but the hash browns weren't browned much. I'll probably give them another shot and try the Chesapeake Benedict but, honestly, I'm not holding out hope. If you live in Ashton, you're eating breakfast at home, 7-11, or Dempsey's. I'd take Dempsey's over 7-11, but I can make better food at home.

I thought the food here was very good, especially the French fries which were so crispy and delicious! The service was good as well. The only thing I wish I had known was that they served breakfast all day. I also would have liked to have seen some more vegetarian options. I definitely plan on going back! There was a good atmosphere and everyone was so friendly.

Another neighborhood greasy spoon. The people here know each other, and the regulars, and the food is good. The seating is a little cramped, so get friendly. It also is reminiscent of the old linoleum benches at McDonald's. The mugs are a random assortment of donations that appear to have come out of people's kitchen. I would not recommend the coffee. Cute, close to church, and even though it's packed, can usually seat you within 20 minutes. I pretty much always order waffles, but the hashbrowns and eggs are yummy. It's a little pricey for a neighborhood place, but I've taken out-of-town guests here before and they were equally satisfied.

One of the best places in Montgomery County but it is no secret. Always busy. Love the staff and love that I can get bacon/eggs at anytime of day. They are brilliant with the kids if you can squeeze into a booth. Highly recommend!

Hooray for the local diner-style restaurant. My family ate breakfast here on a Sunday morning and it was a treat. Nothing was fancy, everything was just right. The breakfast was just like you'd expect for a small diner, with no frills or bad attempts at cuisine. When it gets busy, the seating system sort of stinks, but it's worth the wait.

It is a little county kinda place in a strip mall. We have grabbed a few beers and late lunch a few times. It is clean, generous portions, good service and unique. I have to say there is someone in the kitchen that puts detail in to the presentation. The biggest issue I had was the vegetables tasted boiled not steamed. Worth a try. I have not had a bad meal. Fried oysters is my fave.

The breakfast was great. The cream chip beef is one of the best I've had in a long time. This was my very first time at this place. I showed up with a party of 6 and was seated immediately. Very pleasant service. Real cozy environment. I coffee is served in coffee mugs from places all over the U.S. Will definitely come back.

4 stars for the service, 3 stars for the decent but unremarkable diner food. Other breakfast options int he area being McDonalds, Dunkin' Donuts or "cook it at home" Dembseys is always crowded. It never disappoints, but never wows me either. Normally portions seem huge but this past weekend my omelet seemed a little skimpy. Or maybe it was because I skipped dinner the night before?

We visited the restaurant for dinner yesterday with another couple. We both had Entertainment book coupons for a complimentary entree when one of equal or greater value was purchased. We showed the coupon before ordering. The waiter, Jason, said they weren't going to accept the coupons, as they needed to make money. We asked why and he said it was the restaurants discretion. He said he would take a couple of dollars off the bill for each of us, which he did. I ordered veal parmesan which was good. My wife had fish, which was terrible - inedible.

My favorite place for breakfast. Food is always cooked right and the owners are great. Staff is friendly and efficient. Reminiscent of small town city cafe where everyone meets each morning.

This is your typical down home local diner with all the fix'n, loud conversations by local customers who so obviously have been there very morning since they opened. Good feel... kind of intimidating at first, but they are super friendly. I would get whatever is on special, solid foundation of breakfast foods, they don't try to make it complicated, you can probably name whats on the menu without looking at it. But solid food and friendly service, big portions. Def a Fan.

I've been to Dempsey's 2 or 3 times now. The food is very good. I absolutely love their biscuits and gravy...they're the best I've ever had. I also really like their baked potato soup. The service is quick and friendly...everyone seems to be happy. The decor sucks though. It has a really old and cheesy look to it. They also have an ant problem. Ants crawl on the tables and walls. I will still eat there though...the pros outweigh the cons.

A new place we found on the way home from soccer. A small down homey type of place, even has ceiling fans. Food was good, I had breakfast, pancakes (huge) sausage and eggs w chz. A nice place to get a meal, with that down home feel.

Great little breakfast and brunch restraint. Typical greasy spoon with good food at an affordable price. Before today I would have given it a 4 but they messed up my order so it's getting a 3. Overall still a good place. Can get quite crowded around 9am for brunch. Another user put it well...Never disappoints, but never wows me either.

For a typical, common breakfast place, it does the job! Service was very timely and friendly. The food is a tad bit on the pricey side, but that's probably due to the surrounding area. No complaints here!

This place is something I kinda of found by accident, trying to get out of a small shopping strip after a stop to a 7 - 11. I am a fan of breakfast places and this place kind of caught my eyes. So i tried it out. Well, Breakfast places are breakfast places and this has all the markings of a typical breakfast place. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles. the usual and so i thought. until i saw this on the menu... the Eggs Chesapeake. crab cake eggs benedict. I would have to say, you gotta try this place once if you are a fan of local breakfast places. I think this place is pretty decent. a flip between Original Pancake house and here. Home made waffles and pan cakes, and i like their shredded potatos and corned beef. But if u want something out of the ordinary, try their eggs chesapeake. then you can say. gosh, i love maryland... Corned beef hash with eggs over easy, shredded potatos and english muffin. On certain days, you could be waiting for a table... But definitely worth a trip... 4 martian thumbs up!

Excellent breakfast, although it's not exactly cheap. But very good quality. Sausage patties are fantastic. Omeletes are great. Have been for dinner a few times. Nothing spectacular but always consistent. Can't say I've ever had a bad meal here.

Tried this place on a Sunday morning after Reading positive reviews. The food was excellent. Very large portions! The service was pretty slow but they were crowded. Don't go here if you are in a hurry. However if you don't mind a bit of a wait, the food was worth it.

It's a great place to get a quick meal, drink coffee out of mismatched mugs, and have homeade tasting breakfast food. It is really delicious and I love the staff. It is a diner, so don't expect perfection, but for a diner-- it's perfect!

  • Natalia R.

I love this place! Their servings are VERY generous. Their staff is very friendly and their food is scrumptious. I would 5 stars if it wasn't that sometimes flies like this place as much as people. Tip: if you want breakfast on Sunday get there before 11am...the place gets super crowded w/the after church crowd.

Beware the spinach omelette! I have been eating breakfast here, off and on, for close to 20 years. We hadn't been in a long time, and now I remember why. The food just isn't good. Today I opted for an omelette. Big mistake. I asked for spinach and provolone, and what came to me was a huge wad of watery, unseasoned spinach with the egg part draped over the top and some melted provolone on top of that. The spinach oozed all over the plate, leaving a disgusting, greenish-brown watery puddle. The egg blanket, too, turned an unappetizing greenish brown. I had a couple of bites - I was starving - and just couldn't eat it. When I complained to the waitress (who has worked there *forever*), she explained that that's just how spinach omelettes are, and all spinach omelettes ooze brownish liquid. Having ordered spinach omelettes at other restaurants and having made my own, I know this isn't - or doesn't have to be - true, and I said so. She wouldn't deduct it from my bill, even though I only ate 2 or 3 bites of it. $10 wasted. I don't know how much of the problem was due to the fact that this wasn't a true omelette -- it was just a pile of spinach covered with some cooked eggs (i.e., not cooked together) -- and how much of it was due to a lack of care in the kitchen (e.g., not squeezing any of the liquid out of the spinach), but I was most turned off by how the waitress handled (or didn't handle) it. When I went to the counter to pay the bill I again complained to the woman there, and she said that if she were my waitress she would have taken it off the bill, but that if my waitress didn't, there was nothing she could do. Really. So, 20 years, and this time I'm really done. We won't be going back.

We love Dempsey's! It's a nice family diner with a small town feel even though we are in a big city. Breakfast is great!

Was at Dempsey's for lunch about a week ago. Food and service were adequate (we had to ask for menus.) The flies were unbearable though. Don't know if there's much they can do about that with the door opening so often but it was kind of gross.

I have driven past this place for 25 years and never stopped until we got a restaurants.com coupon. What a pleasant surprise for a little joint in a strip shopping center. The dinners are really good. They have a kingcrab leg dinner for $10.99! Can't beat it. I tried breakfast the other day and it was also very good.
