Stopped here for dinner last night. Very nice and clean inside. Wasn't really that hungry, so I ordered a bowl of the soup of the day, which was a light asparagus soup with grilled corn and leeks..very tasty. Also ordered the chilled lobster salad, which had avocados, farm tomatoes and an orange cilantro dressing. Very large lobster chunks and all fresh produce. Very satisfied and made for a perfect light meal. Also tasted the french onion soup, which was very tasty. Onions were caramelized and the broth was very rich and flavorful, with perfectly browned melted cheese on top, the way a good french onion soup should be. Highly recommended.

I was in MA for my graduation, and had our celebration dinner here. WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL. Fantastic food. Great service - so patient, so kind. The ambiance was so great, just relaxed with a bit of a fancy casualness to it. The food - great. Had steak, perfectly cooked.

We came here for a business meeting and a recommendation from a local friend. We had the french onion soup, chop salad, chicken wings and fried hot peppers for app's. They were all great, the chopped salad was delicious with all fresh veggies chopped finely with gorgonzola chz however my guest asked the server if there was lettuce in the salad or just veggies and she said yes but it was just veggies not a typical salad with a base of lettuce, he did not enjoy it as much as I did. For dinner I had the special for the night, hanger steak with scallops & fresh asparagus, and it was cooked perfectly and the light sauce on the scallops was delicious. I highly recommend this one. One of us had the strip steak with mac & cheese on the side and & the steak was also cooked perfect. We also had a pasta dish that was very good, pasta was cooked perfectly al dante with just the right amount of sauce. The fourth dish, the meatloaf with mashed & fresh string beans was disappointing and is the only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. It appeared to be sliced then grilled and it was so dry and honestly didn't even look appetizing on the plate. Had we not been hosting business associates we would have definitely sent it back. For dessert we shared the chocolate beignet's and they were ok, a bit dry since it only had a small coating of caramel on the plate, should be served with ice cream or more caramel sauce. Cappuccino's finished the night and were light and fluffy. The service was very attentive and thorough. I am looking forward to coming back when I'm in town.

The burger and fries were good. But then we noticed mold growing in the water container they fill the glasses from. How many hands and contaminants had that water container been exposed to in the time it took to grow mold between cleanings? Several days without a proper cleaning perhaps? Which then made me wonder what else around the kitchen area might not have been cleaned.

Outstanding food. Sandwiches and salads were huge. Jerk chicken sandwich was tasty but piece of chicken was very small. Apple cider donuts, chocolate cake, sorbet, cheesecake were all delicious. Bananas Foster was a little disappointing. We were at Max Tavern to celebrate our daughter's ordination to deaconate in the Episcopal Church. When it came time to pay the bill, our waiter informed me that our check had been taken care of by a friend of the restaurant by the name John. I did not get to thank John, but hopefully he will read this post. If he does, our family and friends want to say thank you.

I love Max's Tavern. It is one of my go to restaurants in the area. While the food is consistent the service is very attentive and friendly. Sometimes the portions can be a little on the small side for the value conscious. The bar is a great place to unwind after a long day at the office. The patio when open is a relaxing time save if Bondi's Island isn't putting out overpowering odors. I would say this is a great restaurant, but you will pay for the experience. It's on the pricier side for the area. The wines by the glass could do with some old world wines for an option. The cocktail selection is diverse with an emphasis on artful cocktails rather than your 90's standards. Overall a great place to visit for a nice night out or a work dinner.

Dined here after going to the Basketball Hall of Fame (located in the same building). Overall I enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere. I had the Kale Salad and while it was good, learned I am not a fan of raw kale. I also had the French Dip sandwich, which was delicious! Served with equally delicious truffle fries. I was not really impressed with the dessert options. We choose the apple cider donuts which turned out to be donut holes. They were just okay, but the dipping sauce was very good!

lunch recently, really liked this place, sort of rich looking with reds and wood, we ate at the bar , they have an interesting selection of drinks and a local mostly beer selection, calamari was great, pib burger ( not pork but beef with pulled pork great as was the salmon....service was attentive and pleasant.....great place

Food is a bit pricy, but I can say very well prepared, presented, and flavorful. The service is good. The waitresses / waiters are very professional, some a little too fake, but overall friendly. If you're looking for a quiet place to go out to, this is not it. It's fairly busy and there are lots of people. The drinks from the bar are actually drinks! They aren't those fruity drinks with all juice, sour mix , pretty fruit and a drop of alcohol. I like the place.

Eh...for the "MAX" group;... I'd expect something higher end. I also feel that these places are a bit high brow and the food and service does not match. The restaurant was a bit dated and dingy Food was just ok.. I mean..example...I ordered the mussels appetizer and the beards weren't cleaned off of them! that is prep 101, people. My sliders were overcooked and underseasoned... The wing sauce was good but the wing itself was limp. Service was fine I wouldn't go back when you have PLAN B just next door.

Had an excellent dinner the other night. Had a blackened scallop and steak combo dinner. The scallops were well seasoned and awesome. The steak accompaniment was very good too. We had the tuna taco appetizer which was excellent as well. Very happy with the whole meal.

Being from Connecticut, I am a longtime fan of the MAX Group, their restaurants all seem to have their own different flair and cuisine and Max's Tavern is no exception. The interior of the establishment is dark and cozy, the dark wood booths invite you to have great conversation with your friends over a cocktail or glass of wine. All of the food that I have had there has been excellent, my favorite being the "Steak a la Max". The bar is vibrant and festive, with many people coming in after work to chat with coworkers over a crafted cocktail. Overall Max's Tavern is a great place to go with friends or coworkers to enjoy great food and drinks.

My family and I LOVE this place. To start with the drinks are always good! They are well made with the good stuff. Whether you go to sit at the bar or dine-in you won't be disappointed. Bar food is good and every day there are dollar specials.

I went to Max Tavern with my husband, our two friends, and they're daughter on Sunday night. It was nice and quiet at around 5:00 p.m. The food was good as usual, but the bread did take a bit long to come out, and our waiter was not very attentive for such a slow night. I had the shrimp pasta, which I would highly recommend. Max restaurants almost never disappoint, and this is no exception.

Very nice and lively place, definitely not the place you want to go to for a quiet evening. But this being said the food is really tasty. Service was professional and friendly, I was there with 5 guests and the appetizers were awesome: Crab cakes, Tuna tacos, shrimp and oysters very fresh... everything was perfect Dinner servings were also well presented and tasted great. A little quieter, at least in some area of the dining room, would make it a 5 stars. But I'll definitely be back

You get what you pay for! Food & Drinks are pricey... however it's SO WORTH IT! Appetizers are not fried crap like you would find at a chain restaurant. I ordered the Tuna Tacos and Buffalo Shrimp as apps (both excellent) and a Chop Chop Salad w/ Blackened Shrimp (very tasty) our drinks added up but we enjoyed watching the scenery of men trolling for ladies & drunk older women looking for young guys! It was hilarious! Bartender was great! She was attentive and took the time to talk and listen to us (usually bartender just want your order & go back leaning on cooler for next customer) very good group they have working there!

Outstanding Happy Hour! Thursdays are dollar oyster night and it is totally worth going. The Friday Fish Taco specials are very good. I have gone here more frequently for raw food than the steaks and cooked food and I have never been disappointed. The beer selection is average with rotating seasonal specialties on draft Waitstaff is attentive and accommodating. The prices are a little high. Like most other establishments in the Hall of Fame, it can get crowded quick. The crowd is generally older and not rambunctious, but it can be tough to get a seat at the bar later in the evening.

Very over priced. The bang for the buck just doesn't work for me. Haven't been back in a while.

Went recently for a business lunch with a group of six. It is always our "go to" place for important business lunches. The menu is amazing and the specials are more and more tempting each time. Portions are always very generous and the service never disappoints. You have to try the tuna tacos for an app and their Cobb salad is hands-down the best (ask for it in a bowl as opposed to a platter). Have been for dinner only couple of times and it was very busy but good. Steak is a must but be careful with au poivre. My order was way over coated with pepper and just as salty. I am holding back from giving five stars only because the drinks are very pricey and occasionally the service can be slower than should be.

The good, the bad and the ugly. The Good. The wait staff. Our waiter (wish I could remember his name) was very personable and seemed knowledgeable plus the host and supporting staff were all very pleasant. Thus the 2 stars. The Bad. The prices. When the waiter brought out a steak knife to cut my $38 fillet I jokingly said I hoped I didn't need it.....I did. The ugly. Even though my waiter knew that I was kind of planning my meal choice around the "bourbon, bacon, butter" sauce, when it was served to me, it had so much garlic (not mentioned in the ingredients) that I couldn't taste any other ingredient, except maybe the butter (I'm not sure there were any other ingredients). Despite the fact that I told our waiter about this (he stated that he wasn't even aware that it included garlic and did offer to get me alternative, which I declined as I was fed up by that time), I was still charged for it. I may sound petty because I'm complaining about this as it was only $1.50 (as I recall but may have been more) but the fact that they didn't deduct the charge from the bill was even more so.

Used to love going to Max's when I lived out here. Came out here to visit with my parents who were in town and ordered the Tuna Tacos and the pork chop. Pork chop was good but the Tuna Tacos gave my dad and me bad food poisoning, so much so that I had to get a hotel room because I couldn't make the drive back to Boston.

Simply a fantastic meal... I highly recommend... the scallops (yummm, just delicious) the wedge salad (just enough of the essential ingredients) and especially, the dirty martinis with stuffed olives. Their dirty martini is now firmly seated at #1 in my book. They made it perfectly and the olives were delicious!

Waitstaff in the lounge and outdoor terrace leaves something to be desired. Four waitresses outside and not one of them acknowledged us. Tried to flag them down on several occasions totally ignored us. We frequent Max's at least once a, week and lately these girls suck!! Food is decent, but I take my money elsewhere !!!

I went with a group of four to Max's Tavern last night and had a great time. Our waitress was funny, professional, and patient. It is very nice inside with a separate dining and bar area. This was not my first time here, just my first review. The food was very good with decent sized portions. My only two complaints are that the fried calamari was undercooked and very oily, and the fries that came with the French Dip were overly salted. The beer list could use some work, coming nothing close to Plan B's next store. The wine list seemed extensive, and was complimented by all kinds of creative drinks. I also liked how they printed the night's specials on a small card for each table.

Here on business & this was recommended but I was not impressed. I thought it was overpriced by looking at the menu. I ordered Fish and chips - the fish was burnt - not for me On the positive side the service was excellent

Updating to five stars for the happy hour service. The food is delicious and they don't skimp even though it is heavily discounted. Presentation is still great and the bar is actually a nice spot to sit.

I've been in Springfield on business for the last three weeks and my customers (locals) recommended this spot. Terrific prime rib and a great wine selection. I've been 3 ones since I've been in town and I have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. They have dollar food specials each night and Sundays (at least while I've been here) they feature a 3 course meal for $25. Highly recommended.

Hit or miss. Went with a large group with a large order selection. Service was great. Wait staff met our every need and request. Unfortunately, our requests included sending certain items back to the kitchen as they were underdone (chicken wings). I, personally, ordered a crab cake and grilled chicken Caesar salad. The chicken was very, very dry. The romaine lettuce was filled with knots and drowned in fishy dressing. The crab cake...oh my...one of the best crab cakes I've ever had. Light. Airy. Filled with crab. Just perfect. I would be back, but know to avoid certain items.

My husband and I went here to celebrate Valentine's Day. We had oysters and the tuna tacos to start. Both were amazing!! I highly recommend the tuna tacos...that wasabi cream is outstanding!! My husband had the Berkshire pork chop with apple/chipotle butter and pea risotto. I had the chicken with pork belly and cheddar grits. Aside from the risotto being a little too al dente, I give both dishes 5 stars!!! Amazingly delicious!!! The other reason I did not post this with 5 stars is because we found the wine to be terribly overpriced :( The best "by the glass" Cabernet Sauvignon was $12.50/glass. I purchased the same wine for $16.74 for a BOTTLE!! Overall it was very expensive, but very good. Service was wonderful and the atmosphere was casual, but intimate. Go here if you want a delicious meal...but order beer (much better prices), NOT WINE!! :)

  • Stephanie K.

The bad: our waiter needed a personality. The garlic bread was 4 sticks of cold dry focaccia bread with a not so bad gorgonzola sauce. The calamari was just average. The good: The Max burger was awesome. One of the best burgers I've had. It was rare like I asked and the bun was soft and buttery. The crab cake was just what it should be all crab with little filler. The atmosphere was upscale pub feel.

Waitress was untrained and less than professional. Their card machine was down when we were there. The 'very popular' meatloaf was fatty and covered in thick salty overbearing gravy. The only good thing is their extensive wine list, featuring my favorite desert wine from Napa(where i'm from) As if the service wasn't bad enough, the spacious restaurant's ambiance was also ruined when our waitress said ' I don't know why the desert wine glass is so small, that's weird'. Again, untrained.

Not impressed. Service was friendly and good (that's why 3 stars instead of 2) but food was so so. Seafood sampler was just ok. I ordered a ribeye rare and it was rare but the outside was charred black. So charred that it was crunchy. Totally ruined the steak. Tasted burnt. Only there for a quick business meeting. No need to go back. Maybe it was an off night.

What a beautiful night last night was to sit outside. And I tried something new- usually stick to my favorites. Tuscan shrimp with artichokes, olive tamponade, red peppers, white cannelloni beans, and fettuccini. Bread crumbs on top added a perfect crunch. I will order this again. Service from Josh our server was outstanding. He was very attentive and personable. Once again a great dining experience.

Max's is probably one of the most upscale places you can find in Springfield... Last time I came I brought my mom here for girls night! We did not have to wait at all and got to sit outside on the patio! Yay! This is one place in Springfield where you can feel comfortable sitting outside (haha). But really, it is nice. We had a great server, I wish I remembered his name, but I know he was laughing at all my moms jokes. YAY. We started with some bread which was super yummy. We split the Wedge Salad as an app and it was the perfect size for a small start... I am sort of a snob about things like the Wedge Salad after working in a Lydia Shire restaurant..but this was pretty darn good! I got the ribeye steak and my mom ordered the Fish and Chips special. We also got a side of broccoli. All the food was excellent! I really cannot complain about anything, my steak was cooked perfectly and my mom loved the fish! This is really where they got this last star....We are all ready to go and I wanted to get my steak wrapped up. So the server takes it...and never comes back with it....finally he remembers and looks sick! He threw it away. I was a little bummed because I had almost a whole steak left, but I am not once to make a scene, so I said it was fine! BUT...they made me a brand new steak!!!! They were so apologetic and I cannot argue with another ribeye. *** Keep up the excellent service to compliment the yummy food!!!!!

I honestly don't understand what the hype is about Max's. My in-laws had reservations at 7p (or so they told us) one night that they could not make, so we took their place. When we arrived, the hostess told us we did not have reservations. Knowing my in-laws can be flighty, I suggested she check another time. Low and behold, our reservations were actually at 7:30p. With an extra half hour before our actual reservations, she suggested we go to the bar. We waited ten minutes and did not get service, so we left and went to Samuel's for a drink. I remember nothing spectacular about the meal. I can, however, say that they had bacon wrapped asparagus on the side. I asked if I could could have asparagus without. They told me no. That to me says all of the food is pre-made. Why would I want pre-made food at their prices? If the service was friendlier and the food half the cost, I might give it another star. But that would be generous.

  • Kitti O.

I've been coming here for years the food has always been consistent and good, I don't however recommend this place for a first date meet, rather third or fourth as 99% of the menu items have garlic in it and lots of it. It's delicious :)

  • Heather R.

We ate at the bar because there was a 40 minute wait for a table. The service was great and our bartender makes a mean mojito. The meal was delicious as usual. We had the braised rabbit and calamari for appetizers, hubby had steak and I had blackened mahi mahi for our entrées. Everything was prepared perfectly. Max's continues to be a favorite.

My husband and I went to Max's to celebrate my birthday. We both enjoyed the Hooker Brewtus Maximus from the beer list. Each time I go, I am so tempted by their expansive wine selection. We ordered the flatbread pizza appetizer, and it was terrible - over garliced, overcooked, non-broccoli things with feta and very fresh tomatoes on top of a flaky, overcooked thin crust. I was happy with the complimentary fresh bread while my husband ate that monstrosity. Ew. Our waiter was very good. I liked that he explained the veggies were fresh and local, and he was attentive. Not bad-attentive, like when the waiter shows up as soon as you put food in your mouth and strikes a conversation. He showed up as things were needed and did a good job. I had the filet and my husband had the prime rib. The filet was over-seared on the outside, but I think I liked it. It was different. I didn't stop eating it until I ate too much. Loaded potato with bacon - can't really ever go wrong with that. Again, I wish I could give it a 3.5. It was my birthday and I had a good night, so they get a 4 this time.

Busy Friday night dinner out with an old friend. Food--my ribeye steak was slightly over-salted but melted in the mouth. Shared mussels/chorizo and the tuna taco apps--both were fantastic. Wine list was OK. Proximity to the NOISY bar made conversation tough--and after 32 years if friendship, we talk a LOT!! Waiter (Derek) was attentive but couldn't BS about a bottle of Crozes Hermitage. (If you don't know, say so!) Would definitely go back for another meal--food was well worth it!

Max's is a fantastic place for an upscale meal. Just be ready to wait, the service can be ... slow. I've never had bad food here. Whatever I get, from the steaks to the calamari to even the warm assorted bread basket that comes down as you sit. Delicious. They've also got a really nice selection on drinks with classic happy hour specials until 6pm. Win and more win. The atmosphere is beautiful. Located in the shadow of the Basketball Hall of Fame, it's mood-lit on the inside and well-shaded with giant umbrellas on the outside (for those nice Springfield summer nights.) It really is a fantastic spot to sit with a glass of wine. Everything is expensive but you get what you pay for, and you're paying for is great food and even better surroundings. What knocks off the star though is the service, which has always been slow. I've never had a disaster expereince like some of the other reviewers, but they do seem to be understaffed every time. The last time I went, the chef actually brought out the food since there was one guy trying to take orders and serve the entire patio. Still, it does give you a chance to sit back and enjoy the setting for a great meal or drink out with friends.

Absolutely terrific food and service. I've gone here on business and pleasure tons of times over the past few years. Max's has never disappointed. My favorite dish is the steak Oscar. Yes, I'm a pig. When in Rome. They have outdoor seating which is ok. It is overlooking the parking lot after all. Excellent place for a date or a business dinner. Yum!

My boyfriend and I stopped in for a few drinks and were not disappointed. The bar staff was friendly but not overly talkative, and whipped up a very professionally done pumpkin martini for me and a Tom Collins for him. I would go again, if I had the money! Drinks were pretty pricey.

Pains me to write this, as I'm a big fan of Max Downtown and particularly Max Burger. This restaurant is not worthy of the Max Group's solid name. We went at 2pm on a holiday Monday, so super slow and not at lunch rush. Really no excuse. We had to wait 20 minutes for soda. "The bartender has a full bar, so..." was the reason given. With two kids in tow, this is not a viable reason. Then we ask for bread. This too takes 20 minutes, this time we are told "it's baking and we prefer to have it come out fresh". When it finally did arrive, it wasn't fresh. And this is coming from a now ravenous diner. Lunch finally arrives, about 45 minutes after we sat. The burger was just ok (we really wanted a turkey burger but, alas, they were out of turkey (?!)). My wife ordered a basic chopped salad with grilled shrimp. Only a few small shrimp provided, but the salad was rendered practically inedible due to abundance of scallions (see pic...eeew). Anyway, bill comes and I was certain that our sodas would be comped for obvious and sustained fails. No such luck, but by this time I has my dander up so I requested a chat with the manager. He said he needed to "consult with his colleagues". Oy. More waiting, and the drinks were comped, but my afternoon was really affected by this lousy experience.

Loved it. This was the second of the Max's restaurants I have been to now that they have out this way. I went to the Oyster Bar last year which was fantastic. This is more of a steak.seafood place and yep it costs to eat here. I would estimate you are looking at $50 to $80 per person. So its a splurge kind of place. Good beers on tap, big wine list. I had some special Kansas City bone in strip which was one of the better steaks I have ever had. The crab cake appetizer was excellent, so was the blue cheese wedge salad and creme brulee dessert. I'd go here agan anytime I could afford it,

Went here the other night with a friend for drinks and appetizers. It was a good experience, everything was delicious. They have a very creative martini list, and a wide selection of wine. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip and the chips it came with were very good. They were some type of unique home made pita chip. I ordered a flat bread and my friend ordered a salad. The flat brad that night was a pesto garlic flat bread and was super tasty. I want to go back for dinner someday. I would say make sure you make a reservation for dinner on a weekend.

This restaurant was overall good. The wait staff was friendly and helpful - some of the best service I've ever received. The menu seemed a bit pretentious, trying, and full of awkward combinations. The complimentary bread was fresh and delicious. For an appetizer we got the gorgonzola garlic bread (Hall of Fame Garlic Bread) and it was only good for a couple of bites. The flavor was overwhelming and became strange (and I love gorgonzola and garlic). I ordered the fish & chips; it arrived hot and in good time. The fish was very tasty and the sauce that came with it was very good as well! The fries were not good. I expected something much better. I imagine they were the truffle fries, though it doesn't say that under the fish & chips. The coleslaw was typical coleslaw, good but nothing special. My other half ordered the French Dip (a beef sandwich) and he loved it! He enjoyed everything about it - the bread, the meat, and sauce. He received steak fries with his meal, which were much better than the ones I received but still not great. We also got a few oysters and they were very, very good. We expected the high price, but with that also expected great food. The portions weren't worth the price and the awkward combinations definitely came through with the garlic bread and fries.

Longtime diner at Max restaurants. Went mid afternoon on weekend for lobster special and felt something was off. Waitstaff minimal, lobsters slightly underdone, french fries didn't seem freshly cooked and meal dragged out for two hours due to low staffing. Overall, this restaurant does not compare favorably with the others. Disappointed- have been here several times, not likely to return soon.

Great atmosphere and usually decent service but lately Maxs Tavern seems to be off its game. The menu is getting tired and honestly the food quality is less than what I expect from the Max group. Good place that could be great. But isn't.

I was lucky enough to catch this during happy hour, which gave me a chance to try a few of their items for a relatively low price. Cheeseburger Sliders - the pickles seemed to be homemade and really complimented the house sauce they put on the burger. It was perfectly sweet and moist, which can often be over cooked with a bite so small. The $5 order came with two mini burgers, which seemed about right for the quantity and quality. Pulled Pork Sliders - The pulled pork on the sliders was quite a bit smaller than the amount of meat on the cheeseburger sliders, but overall the bbq sauce was a good mix of tangy and sweet. Mac N Cheese Side - Very creamy cheese and the bread crumbs were perfectly topped off. I thought the cheese blend though was a bit dull compared to other places. It definitely could have used some stronger flavors to give it a true signature at Max's. Buffalo Wings - They were grilled and not deep fried, which was fine. The buffalo sauce was definitely not your average store bought sauce, which was a pleasant surprise overall. My only complaint was no happy hour drink specials! They had a good selection of bottled beers to choose from however. All the small menu items do add up though! Wait staff I had was attentive for our needs, so it was an overall positive experience!

The first time I had Max's, I ordered the Max a Penne (extra spicy, o'course), and it was so delicious - cheesy, spicy and lightly sauced with thick chunks of grilled chicken. Yum. I ordered it four times more, and it's increasingly watery in flavor. Sad. Why do I keep ordering it? I seriously don't know. Don't ask dumb questions. Ha. Just kidding. (I know, I need to stop ordering it.) They have some okay things. The calamari is nice and crispy with bits of spicy, pickled banana peppers. Artichoke dip is thick and gooey. We've had ribeye steaks Oscar style. Pretty good (not great). Chocolate cake is decent. All in all, average place. Man, I feel so bored writing this review. That's how I feel about the food on the whole. They don't do well with takeout here (if you have anti-social coworkers who do not want to eat dinner with you). They will always give you a 20-25 minute window, but it's more like 35 minutes (maaaybe). Get a Black Cadillac shot while you're waiting (Patron Cafe + splash of Baileys). You'll feel great after.

Max's is quite excellent. Housed within the outside of the Basketball Hall of Fame, it's a little tough to find if you're on the highway, but it's worth it to get over there. I started with what was referred to as a "Black Orchid": it had watermelon vodka, blue curacao, and ingredients that escape me beyond that. It was quite yummy, and a perfect start to the meal. This was followed by appetizers: garlic bread with Gorgonzola fondue, as well as tuna tacos. Both were awesome: the Gorgonzola was quite the perfect cheese for this situation, and the tacos, with their wasabi kick, were excellent. Moving onto the main course, I had the Atlantic Grilled Salmon, which was absolutely wonderful. Service was also quite good. Exactly what I was looking for :)

LOVED Max's! Came here for my 30th birthday with my husband and 5 friends. The food was great, the wine was wonderful. Got the oysters as an app and they were very fresh - Blue Points were delicious! The filet was cooked perfectly (med rare - you're stupid if you get your steak cooked well/med well). The loaded baked potato was a little disappointing, but still went well with the steak. At the end of the meal, our waiter brought over the creme brulee (so good!) and a card signed by the entire staff! So wonderful to have a caring restaurant =)

Let me be brief: The food was excellent. The service (ask for Mark!) was outstanding. The atmosphere is posh and sophisticated. But $14.95 for two sea scallops and 4 asparagus spears? That's a stretch. Max, it was fun, but I don't think I'll be back soon.

Eh. This is not exactly the crown jewel of the Max Restaurant Group. They have a fairly lengthy wine list, but only a fraction of them are served by the glass. The dinner menu is sort of "generic semi-upscale." I ordered a beet salad that was pretty disappointing-- only a few thin beet slices with some watercress and barely any dressing. The other ingredients-- dried cranberry, radish, and ricotta salata-- were MIA. The rainbow trout was tasty, and definitely a highlight of the meal, but it was served with odd little cubes of sweet potato, most of which were nearly raw. Our waiter was friendly, and the service was competent.

Food 5 out of 10, had a steak and I could definitely cook a better one at home, pricey for the quality of the food. So I go in with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday and they put us in the business room, bright lights and everyone talking about work, extremely awkward and nothing romantic about it. I don't usually feel profiled (I'm Puertorican") anywhere I go but this time I did. I ordered a coconut mojito and it was disgusting! Bartender didn't blend it so I swallowed chunks of cream of coconut. Aside from that, our waiter was very nice :)

This is my first visit & the steak was "wickedly delicious" as stated by my server Kyle! From beginning to end the food & service was amazing.

I will give it two stars because the other two people with me enjoyed their meals, and also the local beer they had (with part of it being donated to charity). The bread and their butter was pretty good, and the other people with me liked their apps (shrimp cocktail). They also said their meals were good (filet and fish n chips). Me on the other hand, ugh. The meal was just gross. I don't know why, but i went with the tuna tacos, and they were just disgusting. I won't even get into it, but they are awful. My meal was the chicken, and it was like cooked all weird and the whole plate was like soupy and gross. Im not sure really what to say here, but either go somewhere else, or don't get what i got.

The restaurant was very nice looking, but that's about it. The food was not worth the money we paid. I expect more from a fine dinning restaurant. Service was ok.

All around a great meal, good attentive yet unobtrusive service, nice decor and sophisticated. I had the prime rib and cooked to a perfect medium rare. My wife had the stuffed trout and she loved it. We'll be back often. Better value for the money than some of the other Max restaurants in CT. Highly recommend.

So my wife and I don't dress like people with money but we go out to eat on a regular basis and sometimes spoil ourselves with an upgrade with a place like Max's Tavern. Having eaten at Tavern on the Hill before I expected a similar experience boy was I wrong. First I ordered a drink for myself and my wife ordered a coke. They bring out this little glass for her with this tiny little bottle of coke. If anything annoys me more it's that places where I am dropping 70-80 dollars on a meal can't give free refills when the places I can get 4 meals for 80 dollars do. I ordered the wings for an app, the steak au poivre for entree and my wife ordered meatloaf. We were never served bread which we noticed other tables had. The wings were alright; kind of fatty and nothing worth their price tag. My steak was.. not au poivre. Steak Au poivre is supposed to be crusted with peppercorns if done correctly; it was still a good steak but not an au poivre at all. The au poivre sauce was good and so was the sides. My wife's meatloaf was good she said but she said it kind of missing the pizzazz it needed for the price tag. Our server was very unattentive which really annoyed me since I ordered an 8 dollar drink, an app and a 25(?) dollar meal for myself. Tavern on the Hill is better, which is disappointing because this place is closer and shares as name with Max's Burger. Pro tip: All money spends the same; if your customer is in a sleeveless shirt and shorts but ordering 90 dollars worth a food they are just as much worth your time as the guy in the suit

Nice local spot for the dinner to impress. Excellent service, interesting and creative martini menu, extensive wine list. The staff is eager to please but, the smiles wear down as the evening progresses; early is best. The waitstaff know the menu and you can trust their recommendations, as the creative menu can seem overly complicated. The basic items are delicious.

On a recent Saturday night we went to celebrate Mom's 80th birthday. It's very dark and noisy. The server was very nice and the bottles of wine on sale. For the most part the food was good. Two of us had the scallops and we both thought the salad in the middle of the plate was a strange accompaniment. It's just terrible. Avoid at all costs. I wouldn't go there again to celebrate anything. Way too noisy.

This is a favorite date night spot for me and my wife. We eat here 5-6 times a year and have never been disappointed. The base menu is both delicious and accessible for even regular non-foodie types, but has enough flourish for the more "sophisticated" (some would say spoiled, pretentious, phouffie) eater to be interesting. Max's is also one of the best places to be seen in Springfield. All of the local politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, accountants, entrepreneurs, and leaders of Springfield's "entertainment" industries make regular stops at this establishment. But, don't get the wrong idea... Anyone (with $100 for dinner for two) can eat here and enjoy a wonderful meal. Food recommendations - oysters - they shuck wonderful fresh oysters here and serve them with a mignonette sauce (champagne vinegar, shallots, herbs & peppercorns) that is so good I've learned to make a variant of it at home. They usually have 2-3 varieties of East Coast oysters available. Get the Malpeques if they have them. Tuscan Salad - this is a simple light salad with warm polenta croutons, roast garluc, and grape tomatoes with radicchio & lettuce that simply works magic with the balsamic dressing it's tossed with. Nantucket Bay Scallops - this was a daily special that we'd never seen before - delicious, FRESH, local scallops - grilled to perfection. We never hard fresh bay scallops ( the little ones) and these were fantastic. Prime Rib - didn't have it on this outing, but Max's makes a good one and that combined with the steaks, fish & chips, and grilled seafood and chicken entrees are what make this place both special and exceptional. Lastly, the staff - the waitstaff is very professional - so professional we often wonder what they're like in real life... Because we find that after a meal we know almost nothing about them besides the specials - this is a good thing... They're not nosy or chatty, are suggestive without being pushy , and what appears to be a 2-3 person team per table ensures consistent great service. My last thought is that I cannot believe that Max's hasn't somehow gotten caught up in the "fusion sushi" fad that seems so prevalent in other parts of the country...maybe it's like meth - never really caught on around here. So, why only 4 stars? It's simple - there isn't one thing on the menu that cannot be obtained elsewhere. There's no (obvious) signature dish or food flourish that catapults the place above and beyond simple superior execution of tasty food delivery. What this means in practice is that your date, business meeting, or office gathering will progress forward, uninterrupted by food that's so breathtakingly original or showy that it steals the show, but rather supported by tasty food that keeps all who dine here in a happy place.

Mmmmmm... love it here. We used Max's as the caterer for our wedding and the catering was top notch. We ate several times at the Tavern when planning things for the wedding. To be clear, this is a review for the restaurant only, not the catering (which would get a million stars). Anyway, the tavern has nice atmosphere, creative yet approachable menu, great flavor, great little touches. For example, the bread came with a unique spread each time we visited. The ice tea comes in mason jars with lemons on a skewer and a little side carafe of extra tea. So cute. The turkey blue plate is such a fun throwback to TV dinners, but way better tasting. When we told them we were getting married, our waitress bought us champagne. Great service. Anyway, we think Max's is tops!

For what you pay here it should be better. The three of us had a very nice meal tonight..but not off the charts good. 2 of us had the prime rib......very nice slab of beef but served luke warm. My wife had a trout fish special and enjoyed it. These places seem intent on running up the bill....waiter asked if we wanted mineral water or bottled water? how bout Springfield tap water i said. All the waters were luke warm. No ice. ordered a manhattan drink special. For $8.25 it was quite small and not at all potent. wife ordered a pinot grigio....$13!! in Springfield,Mass!! I was 1/2 finished my drink when I was asked if i wanted another. Wife said her caesar salad was Ok at best and had stale croutons...my onion soup was just OK/average..... Took too long for the entrees to come out. Side of french fries were small and unspectacular. All in all....service was uneven...food was good but not served hot.....a disappointment for what they charge. Hostess was uninspired/bored. This should be a 4 star place as its attractive and looks professional.....but the value of the place is suspect.

There with a party of 4. We all had various forms of beef; all cooked to our order perfectly... and delicious. Kale salad with beets was wonderful. I've had better onion soup. Crab cake/Filet ("Oscar") and Steak au poivre (if you like peppercorns) were standout meals. Vegetables were fresh and well cooked. I really loved the Roasted Wild Mushrooms. Ordered Fried Onion Strings for the table... excellent. Wine by the glass was reasonable for a very smooth, drinkable Cab at $9. Atmosphere can be iffy. It you want a quiet corner, ask when booking. Some area are definitely noisier than others. Our service was very good, I'd say excellent for a Saturday night. Best beef in the area.

4.5 stars Came here for lunch with my mom and sister before returning to the 'real word' after being home for the holidays. We got here right as lunch was starting (ie right as they were opening) so we were the first ones in the door. Even after other patrons started to trickle in, service was very attentive. Anytime our glasses were half full, the waiter would come over and refill for us. Located next to the basketball hall of fame, I think this place is a nice change from the more typical chains in the area. Inside, the place had a warm tavern-y feel (hence the name). I liked the dark wood finishes. Although I was here for lunch, I can see this place being a good date night spot. There were many items on the menu that sounded good to me, but I decided to go with one of the specials... pan seared striped bass over a bed of stir fried veggies, wild mushrooms, and noodles. I was -so- happy with this choice. The fish was amazing, perfectly seared, crisp outer layer, and moist and flaky on the inside. My mom went with the turkey BLT (came with homemade potato chips and sweet pickles) and my sister got the tuna tacos. They both enjoyed theirs as well (judging by all of our clean plates!) Thankfully we all left a bit of room for dessert. Before seeing the full dessert menu, my sis and I were leaning towards the gelato and sorbet trios... but on seeing the full menu, I opted for the creme brulee with berries. Mom had the coconut cake, sis had the caramelized banana split. All were d e l i c i o u s! I'll definitely have to make a return trip next time I'm home so try more of their offerings.

I really enjoyed Max's Tavern. A few friends and I wandered in having no idea what to expect. We thought it was going to be a low key place based on the name. We were surprised to find a romantic ambiance with dark lighting and leather seating. The bread was ok, but pretty good paired with the pumpkin cream cheese. I ordered the scallops. They were spectacular. They came in a pomegranate oil over butternut squash risotto. The risotto was some of the best I've ever had. The scallops were also cooked to perfection, although they came out luke warm. Everyone else seemed to thoroughly enjoy their meal and we were all surprised when the tab came out to much less than we expected.

A solid place to eat when visiting the Basketball Hall of Fame. On the surface, it seems to cater to a slightly higher end crowd, but casual families can also feel comfortable here. The menu is peppered with many items that are slightly different from the normal Bar & Grill fair. Prices are fairly reasonable as well. The one thing that stuck out when eating here was the staff was very friendly on that day. Not sure if this is the norm, but I couldn't complain.

In a town where there are limited decent restaurants this is an acceptable option. This chain of restaurants is known for quality food throughout CT and southern New England, but this location seems to be staffed with folks that are either trained poorly or just don't care about proper customer service. I have been there a number of times for business and solo and the experience is similar, most recently however I was absolutely floored by the offensive behavior of one server in particular and it was significant enough to write this review. I went in during the week, right around 5pm. The bar here is a busy and loud one, and while it's a fine place to grab a cocktail and an app, I needed to do work, was going to eat a full meal and have a glass of wine. I requested to be seated in the restaurant where it was more quiet (it was 5pm, there were maybe 2 other tables in that area and 1 waitress, with another that came on shift shortly after I arrived). The hostess was nice enough, as she looked at her seating chart to determine the best spot to put me in, the waitress came up behind her to close out a tab and made the comment, "1 person? Oh great, Awesome. Yea, it will be in my section." I wish I could say it was said with a positive tone, the fact that she thought i couldn't hear her snarky comment was shocking. I spent the first few minutes after being seated trying to decide whether to say something or just leave, this was not a teenager, but what I assume is an experienced server. Ultimately, due to the limited restaurants in the area I stayed and decided to show this person that servicing a single diner is a pleasant experience. Sadly I had the specials plopped down on a flyer on my table, while she went to another table to tell them about the specials, my food arrived with a piece of burned meat, and included all the items I'd requested to be left on the side or left off the plate due to allergies, I got no bread and had to ask for water. I used to work as a bartender and waitress, and I know that it is a hard job, and that there are always customers that screw you in the end. It might be the 10 top or the single diner, but rarely did I find the later. I regret that I didn't say something to the server, or at least leave a note with a tip that reflected her level of service and offensive behavior. Instead, because of the holidays and my past work experience in the field I tipped 20% and vowed to write a proper review and suggest others to look elsewhere to dine, or at least know that they're walking into a sub par experience. In looking at the reviews others have written it's not just a one time problem. Max's Tavern can depend on business based on it's location, free parking and reputation, but I wont' be going to this one again.

There are few things that leave me completely appalled and disgusted in a dining experience. I was beyond appalled and disgusted last night by my experience at Max's Tavern, and more specifically with the 'manager', James Stone. We had reservations for 20 people to celebrate a birthday. After waiting for a while for drinks, we were given bread baskets. On one of the rolls was a noticable piece of lint (dust bunny, whatever you want to call it). At the time, James was helping take care of us along with two other servers. We brought the roll to his attention, and he took it away with a smile on his face, no apology or anything. We then received our meals and my sister ordered a tuscan salad. She took a few bites of her salad and at one point pulled a long thin plastic top of a salad bag that was halved out of her mouth (that you usually rip open and discard with bagged salad). Yes, she literally pulled the plastic bag out of her mouth. All of us dining were appalled that this could be an oversight at a high quality restaurant. Unfortunately, this is not the part I'm disgusted and appalled over (which any person I'm sure would be by this point). Two waiters came over to take away the plastic bag top, and it was our expectation that we would hear from the manager. After a few minutes, he came over and my sister explained the situation and commented that she could have choked on the plastic bag top that she had pulled from her mouth. James (the 'manager') then leaned down, placed his hand on her back, and asked in a condescending tone,"should we call you an ambulance"? I think all of us at the table were in disbelief that this was how a manager was handling the situation. I could not let this comment go without letting him know that this was an unacceptable way to treat your customers. He then began to backpeddle, attempting to say that he was really concerned to the point of wondering if he honestly should call an ambulance. I then told him that he knew this 'act' of sincerity was completely false, and for him to insinuate that he was doing it out of concern was a BLATANT lie. The next statement out of his mouth supports his initial sarcastic comment when he mentioned "I was just trying to make some levity out of the situation..." I then, as a customer, let him know that his role of a manager was not to provide comic relief to the situation. He should be focused on ensuring that the customer feels that the situation has been addressed properly. At that point, I was in no mood to hear his incessant meek apologies, and intentions of comping the salad, waiving the cake fee he was going to charge, etc. I asked him to please leave our table, as he came to my other side, he continued to explain his 'honest concern for our well-being'. He finally left after my tablemates insisted that he walk away from our table. We have dined at many other Max's restaurants and find they are typically high quality in terms of food, dining experience, and especially service. A Max's restaurant should not average 3-stars as this one does by loyal Yelp reviewers. As long as there are people like James Stone in a managerial role, this restaurant will be the black sheep in the Max's restaurant group family.

The food quality ranges from decent to solid. With there being a small selection of decent restaurants in the western mass area, Max's Tavern is always a good choice. If this was in a major metropolitan area, however, I don't think I'd give it four stars--it'd just be a close to average restaurant. This place has a pretty large wine list and an American menu with all the traditional staples: steak, shellfish, raw bar items, pasta. Nice, relaxed decor and a small outdoor patio. Good for both lunch and dinner!

I've been to Max's dozens of times since it opened, about once a month for lunch, and probably a half dozen times for dinner. It has been usually very good. I've sampled much of the menu, and my dinner favorites are Filet Oscar, a popular special, and the Salmon. My lunch favorites are the Hollywood Cobb Salad and the Max a Penne. I also often order whatever seafood they have on special for lunch, and I've never been disappointed. The filet is especially wonderful. It's perfectly cooked every time. There is a nice martini menu and a good selection of wines. For starters, don't miss the Calamari. It's crispy and terrific. My only complaint is the marinara sauce. Usually it's properly seasoned, but sometimes it tastes like tomato sauce. It's a gamble. The Crab Cake is a wonderful treat, and if you're in the bar for cocktails, the Mini Slider Burgers and the Garlic Bread with Gorgonzola fondue are really terrific. You can enjoy a special treat if you go on Wednesday or Thursday night during the summer and sit on the patio, where they have entertainment. It's not super loud, but loud enough so that you can't really have much of a conversation while they play though, so take that into consideration before agreeing to be seated there. Max's is pretty pricey. If you order 3 courses and a drink, you're not going to get out of there for under $60 per person for dinner. But the service is always good and the food is normally outstanding.

Maybe it's because we went to The Federal the night before and got spoiled but this was a huge letdown for all of us. Here on business and reviews said it was great so why not...I would call this place average, nothing spectacular. Absolutely EVERYTHING lacked seasoning .... French onion soup was bland, filet had no seasoning...potatoes bland. It's like they all of a sudden ran out of salt and pepper in the kitchen. Either that, or I just walked into a Diabetes convention...... and it's a huge, HUGE ( did I say huge yet?) pet peeve when a steakhouse can't cook a steak to order....that's basic culinary 101 guys. Medium does NOT mean rare, red and swimming in blood on the plate.. Wouldn't waste a trip back here. We all opted out of dessert because nothing at all appealed. Only thing we loved were the cocktails and kind of hard to screw up beer and vodka.

I've been to Max's many times over the years. The food is always above average and sometimes excellent. The service is also very good. This restaurant does not skimp on staffing like others do. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, Max's is a family favorite. The bar is almost always packed, get there early if you want a chance to have a spot.

I went for lunch and was dejected at my first glance at the menu. I wanted something more substantive than a salad, but their sandwich selection was uninspiring. Then the waitress announced the specials, including an out-of-this-world roast beef panini, and things started looking up. I'm not sure what was on it -- some kind of garlicky sauce -- but it was amazing. They need to add it to their regular menu. I think the Max locations by me here in CT are better than this outpost. It was "A-OK," as the star rating indicates, but I recommend that they add some items to their sandwich board.

Have to say this was not our first choice of a place we wanted to eat that day. It was Sunday and we wanted to go to the Hall of Fame, but it seems that every decent restaurant we wanted to try was closed on Sunday. So that set me in a foul mood right there. So we just ended up here for lunch. I will say that the service was decent, so we did not have any issues there. They tried to pawn off their dinner menu on us for lunch since it was fathers day. But all we wanted was something smaller, so our server brought us their tavern menu. We got the tuna tacos app and a breakfast burrito special. The tuna tacos were good. Something new that I have never seen before. So that was a plus. The burrito was awful. There was something about it that just did not make it taste good at all. The kids meals were a suprise. They got an entree, a few fries (nice to see that they did not pile a huge portion on there), some veggies sticks, some fruit and a cookie. A nice change. But the burger was ok. I thought it had a strange flavor to it. And the grilled cheese was also a so-so sandwich. i could have made better at home. Overall a disappointment. Was overpriced. No way i would ever go there for dinner for those prices. Good service, poor food.

Went there for dinner a few nights ago and was really impressed. The service was excellent, nice ambiance, prices are a little steep, but the food was incredibile. I had an arctic char special that was out of this world. Easy 4 stars, will definately be coming back.

The food was phenomenal! However the service needs improvement! Upon arrival there wasn't a host at the door. I waited about 5-6 minutes before the hostess came up to greet my wife and I. Waitress was efficient in taking our orders but was not engaging. It took about 15-20 minutes after finishing our meal for the waitress to cone and ask if we wanted dessert.

Not from the area, and decided to swing through on our way south. We sat with the lunch crowd and was pleasantly surprised. I went in having conflicting expectations from reading most of the reviews, but the friendly waitstaff changed my mind almost immediately. The hostess and waitstaff were very friendly and assisted us with several questions about food preparation. The portions were appropriate for lunch and reasonably priced. I'm sure that if we were ever swinging through Springfield again, a trip to Max's may be in order.

I went to Max's on one of the first good weather Friday nights of the year. The weather was gorgeous so we sat outside. I can't speak for the atmosphere inside, but the outside was comfortable and enjoyable. We sat in one of the high tables in the corner. Great people watching. There was a band set up on the other side of the outdoor area. I worried at first that they would be really loud but that wasn't the case at all. I ordered the Black and White Sesame Tuna, rare, and it was really good. The tuna had a nice, light sauce, and the sesame seeds complimented, not overpowered, the dish. It came with crispy noodles, but I can never figure out how to eat those things. My companion had the Lobster Mac and Cheese, which came with a pound of lobster. I thought the sauce was a little too creamy, but it had a great aftertaste. The service was excellent; our waiter was attentive, brought us hot rolls that were definitely fresh from the oven, and left a carafe of water on the table for refills. I would definitely recommend this place, it's right next to the Basketball Hall of Fame, so it's conveniently located if you're visiting that.

Everything I've had at Max's has been fantastic, but the service leaves a little something to be desired. The staff are often rude and sometimes can make you feel stupid; additionally they aren't very lunch-friendly if you are on a time limit (ie: have to be back at work). With that, the food's great. I've had a few lunch sandwiches and they were delicious and come with homemade fries. The gorganzola fondue garlic bread was fabulous, but the five onion soup was so-so. For entrees, both the Max a Penne and the Max n' Cheese were fantastic. All of the drinks I've had at Max's have been superbly made, and they scored bonus points for having a traditional dark n stormy the last time i went in. Don't skip out on the desert! If they have the "krackel bar" definately get it. It's one of the most amazing deserts I've ever had.

Food was good to me, except my friend that went with me ordered the calamari and had the corner of the bag of calamari in her food. And the bartender was rude and wasn't pleasant to the guest or other staff members. I am sure I will be back though. :-)

I must say that I was a bit disappointed. I have long adored Max-a-Mia's in Avon, CT as well as the Trumbull Kitchen and Max's Oysters. This place is a few notches below as it related to the quality provided in conjuction with value. We found the entrees a bit pricey given the portions.....definitely taking advantage if the tourist destination. I'll stick with some of faves from this restaurant group. You may end up rating this place higher if you haven't visited some of the other locations. Granted it was graduation weekend, but an 1.5 hour wait seemed a bit much, so we ate at the bar - first come first serve.

for a max restaurant this place is the pits. I have been here numerous times and it just doesn't compare to the hartford counterparts. The service is dull and rushed. The food is just ok and the place looks worn. I know they can do better so it is disappointing

In town for a horse show and unable to get a resie at Lattitude in West Springfield, I reluctantly went to Max's for dinner after reading the reviews on Yelp. Needed a reservation around 6 pm on a Saturday and they only had 5:15 available so I took it. I arrived a bit earlier than the rest of my party so I took the seat at the bar and ordered a glass of wine. Max's has a pretty good list of wines by the glass. The bartender (didn't get her name, never do) was friendly, prompt and efficient. There were groups of guys at the bar, all of whom seemed to be regulars, all enjoying light banter with the bartender. So far so good. My party arrived about 15 minutes late but we were seated right away. The dining room was virtually empty...so why only the 5:15 available resie on Open Table?!? Despite others experiences, our waitress was friendly, knew her specials, was able to answer our questions and waited on us expertly. Overall, I would give them an A for service. On to the food: I split the mushroom and garlic flatbread. Wasn't my thing. The garlic paste under the cheese was just too much for me. It overpowered the whole thing. I had the scallops with risotto for my entree. The risotto is green as the puree some of the peas and add it to the risotto. I think the risotto would;ve tasted better without the pea puree. The scallops were tasty. One of my companions had the 12 oz steak au poivre and I had a bite...it was delicious. The steak was tender and flavorful and the au poivre was not overpowering. I dashed out without dessert to make my class in the show, but my companions ordered and enjoyed some sort of mudslide like martini drinks for dessert. The decor is generic steakhouse: red booths, dark wood. It seemed a bit dirty but maybe that was because there had clearly been a large party in the tables next to our booth (I suspect they get a lot of traffic from the Basketball Hall of Fame next door). Overall it was better than expected. I would go back. I mean, there really aren't that many options in downtown Springfield, are there?

I have been going there for years. The food is good, not spectacular, but above average. I never had a wow meal, but then I never had a bad meal either. The service is always great. A safe bet in the Springfield area.

I went back for lunch, specifically the fish tacos, which I've always enjoyed (raw tuna, sticky rice, wasabi in a mini (fried) shell). The tacos were obviously waiting for me to arrive. I took too long. =( They were soggy, and the salad they were perched on was rotting (black and slimy in spots, so I mean that literally). The bar staff was again very attentive, but man the food isn't so hot here (not even the things I used to count on them doing well). I'd give them a 1 1/2 stars, but I won't go down to one *only* because of the bartender.

This is a really wonderful restaurant. The food is great, salads , particularly the chopped salad, superb. Drinks and service excellent. Great inside or out.

Was in town on a business trip and the group decided to go to Max's Tavern based on some restaurant reviews. We called last minute and the host was not able to seat us (11ppl) at one table but offered 3 adjacent booths. The service was a bit slow, but that could be because they stuck all 3 booths with one server. Food was par for the price (12 oz NY strip including one side was $24). The steak was cooked ok and additional sides were sufficient for $4 each. Presentation was disappointing as my NY Strip came on a very small plate (probably 10" length oval), crowded by the side of truffle fries and sauce. There was barely any room for me to move the steak to a flatter part of the plate to cut and many fries got soggy from the meat juices. The steak was barely seasoned and i had to salt and pepper it to give it some flavor. After being mildly disappointed w/ my entree, i was hesitant to order dessert, but our group decided to order a Vanilla bean creme brulee to share, which turned out to be the best part of our dinner. The sugar was the perfect thickness and cracked under a very light tap with the spoon and the custard was light and creamy and smooth. I would have given the dessert 4 stars and entree 2 stars.

Max's sits right next to the new Basketball Hall of Fame. They have an exquisite menu, and their wait staff is very friendly. We were able to order freely, and they never pressured us. We had a half dozen oysters for an appetizer, then followed that with an entree that was delectable. I had the special: a blackened steak sandwich with spinach, onions, and mushrooms. I ate that meal about 10 hours ago, and I am still full. The dessert was fantastic too. It was a chocolate chip cookie tart with ice cream and strawberry sauce. I would visit Max's again for sure. You should too!

Overall I am a fan of the Max restaurant chain - I've frequented them all at some point in time. Given the Max name, it should be no surprise that this may be one of the priciest "tavern" menus you'll see. The food has been good each time - but not great, and for the price point I probably won't be a frequent visitor. The last visit I ordered the special - Filet Oscar. My fault for not asking the price (was surprised to see a $42 charge, higher than anything else on the printed menu), The filet steak was large, and slightly over-cooked - I am always torn between medium and medium-rare, I was assured they "undercook" so ordered the medium and it was definitely edging to medium-well. The "oscar" came with a crabcake and bernaise sauce....the crabcake itself tasted amazing, but was about the size of two quarters stacked together. Crab "coin" would be a more appropriate term, there wasn't more than 2 mouthfuls there. The service is so-so - it appears in some cases they like to hire for looks vs. skill - very pretty people that don't necessarily connect with their guests. Overall - if someone else is paying, I wouldn't say no. On my dime, I think the for the money spent I'd go elsewhere. The food is tasty, but just doesn't connect for price vs. value/experience for me.

This is a terrible establishment and shouldn't be open any longer. You are better served at a local Burger King. The food is dreadful and the service is even worse. I feel bad for Springfield :-(

So I was driving back from Lake George after a long weekend and we decided to make a detour and stop at the basketball hall of fame. I desperately just wanted to nap so my boyfriend and his Dad who was visiting went in the hall of fame. Before that we had lunch here, it was mediocre at best. The decor of the place is cool, dark wood with red leather. I liked that. Our waiter was a jerk, he was unattentive and rather rude when asked to get more cream for the coffee. I ordered a Diet Coke which came in a glass bottle meaning if I wanted more I'd have to pay another 2.95, 2.95 for a soda? Come on. I had the turkey BLT which was ok, the bread was kinda stale and the whole thing was relatively bland. I tried some of the cheeseburger which was way too charred and tasted like a grill instead of a burger. The bill for 4 people was over $50 which isn't a good deal for the food we got. If you're starving and have to eat here I guess go ahead but I'm sure there are better places in the area for lunch.

Love this place. I live in Boston and have access to many great restaurants daily but when I visit my friend in western mass there are far and few good restaurants to choose from. Th service is great, atmosphere perfect and the food is always great. We started with the wings and had the most perfect burger...thanks for the cold beer and a great afternoon...thumbs up max's!!! I'll be back!

I visited Max's last fall and had a solid lunch. Honestly the best part of the meal was the pumpkin/cream cheese spread they served with the delicious bread at the beginning. Burgers were solid but not exceptional, service was a little bit chilly considering the prices you pay here. I would come back here if I were in the area and others wanted to go but otherwise I'm not rushing back. I probably wouldn't get the burger again and I'd try to stretch out across the menu a bit more. I did think the decor was nice and clubby and the atmosphere adds a lot.

Fantastic. Skip the chains, and stop by Max's for the best meal, service and ambiance in the greater Springfield area.

The place was great! Service was excellent and we enjoyed everything we ordered. One had scallops and raved about the dish. Another had the strip steak. The garlic bread appetizer was also a big hit. We also had dessert. Flourless chocolate cake was very good as were the mini cider donuts. would eat at Max's again if ever in the Springfield area.

Solid restaurant. Not awesome food but predictable and good. Rich dark wood and dark red leatherette seating. Good for business dinners but it lacks a power table. For the area, they think they are the best, and although no compliment, probably are. If a new exciting spot is packed, I'd go here as a great back-up.

Nice dinner with my family last night. Really enjoyed the garlic bread with the Gorgonzola sauce, tasty. French onion soup was good, but needed just a bit more salt. My filet was cooked perfectly and loved the shaved brussel sprouts with pancetta. Overall, the service was wonderful, just a few minor issues: we were given a card with the evenings specials on it, but as we were ordering dessert our waiter was reciting the specials to the table behind us and they were not what was on the card he gave us. ???? Not sure why we weren't offered the same thing, it didn't sound as though they had run out of what was listed and had to substitute, but maybe? Also, I ordered expresso with sambuca, the coffee came first and it was several minutes before the sambuca came out. When your cup is that small, it tends to cool down very quickly. My expresso was barely warm by the time I got my shot. Otherwise, it was a very nice meal and I would definitely return.

An ok place. Not unbelievable or anything particularly special. The bar is large but the TV situation is a bit dire. It's service is not horrible. I went with my parents and we had to talk with the manage a few times regarding our faulty service and were given some kind of odd excuses: "We just openned up the patio, and the kitchen hasn't learned to budget their time for dishes". I suppose that would be a valid excuse if they hadnt been open for three years. Maybe Spring of '08 I guess.

This place has great food, but like a lot of the rest of the Max's chain, it is pretty expensive. However, this one is right near the Basketball Hall of Fame (they have some basketball pictures inside, but it is in the motif of what you would expect out of a steakhouse) Most of their apps are seafood based and I don't eat seafood. So I had the garlic bread which was exquisite. For the entree, the first time I went there I got the NY strip au poivre. It was so good, that the next week (both times for a business function), I got the same thing! The desert looks good. I had the triple chocolate bread pudding which was delicious, but small for $6-7. The service is good as well. It is a little out of my price range for a typical night out, but if you can get someone to pay for it, by all means, go for it!

Went here last night with another couple and I wasn't too impressed. No complaints about the decor (though I could), but the service, food and prices left something to be desired. The waits were pretty awful between the time we would place an order and the time we would actually get it. It was a Saturday night but I shouldn't have to wait 30+ minutes after ordering for a garden salad you're probably pulling out of a fridge anyway. The main dishes were OK, the Murray Chicken was good, but the mashed potatoes were hard and tasteless and some veggies were burned. Again, a long wait for the main dishes. The dessert we ordered, a large piece of chocolate cake, was a good size and tasted ok, but it wound up giving two of us an upset stomach about 10 minutes later. The prices stung pretty hard for what we received. I don't mind dropping $30 for an entree, but it better not be Applebee's level food, which is what some of it felt like. Also, selling $8 bottles of wine for $30 isn't a way to win wine folks over. I can't tell people not to go there, but please don't be dissapointed with the experience if you do.

I really don't know what the big deal is about Max's Tavern. OK, so it is right next to the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Hilton, but is that any real reason think the place is amazing. Every time some big wig in my company comes to town, the Tavern is the top place that people mention for a social gathering. The service is so-so, the food is forgettable and over-priced. In truth I would give them another star if you weren't paying for a five course meal when all you get is the same generic food you can get at Longhorn, Applebees, or any other commercial chain. The only thing I can say good about the place is that they served a Stella in it's corresponding glass, like they would in Belgium. In short, only go if someone else is paying.

I know a lot of the above most likely got burgers, so I will not bother to review crappy burgers anyway. I don't eat burgers. All chicken entrees I've had and appetizers were gosh darn good. My favorite, for lunch, would have to be the grilled chicken salad. One of the best I had. Yes, there is a long wait, but if you're going to eat out anywhere in Springfield on a Friday, or Saturday night, it's to be expected. Wait a half hour at Max's, wait a half hour at Uno's. Makes no difference. Learn like we have, make calls ahead of time, or reservations. Great place, great service, great food.
