You're working in Worcester now and, although you've tried a few places, you can't find any that really satisfy your itch for good Indian food. You look up Udupi- just over the line in Shrewsbury on Rt. 9- and decide to have a lunctime adventure. After taking the long way there, you pull into a run-down plaza boasting a dollar store and a place called Fred's Chinese Food. You may be hitting the bathroom or the snack machine later, but you still take the plunge. You walk into Udupi and are greeted and seated immediately. You notice that there isn't really any decor, just a few brass lighting fixtures, a picture or two and a dozen tables. You're seated immediately, review the menu and decide to order the Udupi Express ($8,99), a small thali (combination plate) of Southern India favorites. Ten minutes later, a plate arrives with two metal containers- one slightly bigger than the other- of sambar, two wada and a large masala dosa. The sambar is fine- not as spicy as it usually is, but hearty due to its pureed lentil base. You find the wada to be delicious, larger than any you've ever had and loaded with cilantro leaves (and, unfortunately) stems. You try to dunk them in the coconut chutney but quickly find that they are too big to fit in the container whole and go about chomping them in half. You move on to the masala dosa, the staple dish of Southern Indian restaurants. It's a light, airy crepe stuffed in the middle with potatoes cooked in yellow curry and oil and it is very good. You realize that maybe there is hope for Indian food in Central Massachusetts. It's no Dosa Temple, but maybe Udupi can be a solid stand-in.

I came for the dosa, I stayed for the curries. Try the "AVIAL (Garden Fresh Vegetables cooked in Coconut Sauce and Spices)". It's unlike any other curry I have had and it's fantastic.

Absolutely great vegetarian Indian restaurant. The food is great and the staff are good, but sometimes get busy. This is a great family place, but lacks a bit if you are going for ambiance. If you want to treat yourself, their Peshawari Naan is one of my favorites and better than anything similar in any of the other local Indian restaurants.

Hands down this is the best Indian restaurant that I have ever been to! If you like Indian food this is the place for you! We have followed this restaurant to three different locations! We have never had anything but an awesome & delicious meal there! I am planning our next visit before we pay the bill!

The best Indian food in Boston is in Shrewsbury. Who knew? I didn't, and I never would never have been privy to this information if not for my fiance's past patronage, and insistence that this joint outserves any of the bafflingly mediocre Indian restaurants in Cambridge. Every food choice that I've made here has been an unqualified success. The Mysore Masala Dosa and Baigan Bharta in particular are amazing. Sadly, I don't often have occasion to go to the greater Shrewsbury area, and at many a dinnertime, I've lamented the fact that Udupi is 45 minutes away. I'm always shocked that this restaurant isn't filled to capacity, though the ambiance leaves much to be desired, and the music sounds like a cassette tape soundtrack of an Indian video game from the late '80s. Find a reason to head out west, though-- maybe you could go apple picking, or stock up at Wegman's...or just take in the, uh, culture? in Worcester? I don't know. Just go there.

This is a place you must go to if you are a vegetarian, and even if you're not. It's just great Indian food! We've only been twice now but everything we tried was fresh and delicious. Prices are pretty good too!

All vegetarian yumminess! Their Dosa was beyond yummy! And very filling without the guilt :-) their Naan was great. Probably one of the best indian restaurants on my list and possibly in all of Central Massachusetts area!

Ordered a large amount of food for a graduation party just recently, and we were absolutely blown away with what we got. Generous portions? Check. Amazing, fresh, top-quality food? Check. Great price? Check. Extremely friendly, personalized, and responsive service? Check. We ordered a few days in advance (it was a large order), and picked up the food the day of the party with absolutely no issues. We had ordered a wide variety of dishes, from vegetable korma and sambar to uttapam, naan, idli, sambar bara, and lemon rice. Everyone at the party was over the moon about the quality of the meal. The entire experience was fantastic. The service we got was also extremely courteous. A small anecdote: we discovered that someone at our party had allergies to nuts, and we decided to call Udupi to ask if any of the dishes included that ingredient. We were immediately put through to the head chef who himself told us exactly what he had put in each dish - the whole thing was resolved in less than 2 minutes! This is one of those rare places that leaves you feeling full, satisfied, and with a big smile on your face. Highly recommended.

This is one of the best places for Indian food in the area. It's great because it's vegetarian and I don't have to worry about meat contaminating my food. There was one time that I visited this restaurant and found a piece of plastic bag in my food, but the waiter promptly brought me new food and I haven't had a problem since. The chole bhatura is excellent, as is the malai kofta. Do not miss this place!

This place has the BEST Indian food! Great for vegans, veggies and those looking to dip their toe into the Indian food pond. Yes it's a hole in the wall, don't let that stop you!

Prompt friendly service this quiet Sunday. Vegetable cutlets were tasty, with a hint of something sweet. Garlic Naan was great - warm and full of flavor - not overpowering with garlic- but still great. Staff recommended a Navaratan Korma- It was very good, but nothing spectacular. You won't miss meat with the filling mix of veggies and full flavor. Madras special paya dessert was interesting. Lightly sweet

First time to visit and was a good Indian place for the area. I ordered a Thali, as I was dining alone and it saves having to make a lot of choices, and gives you a taste of a lot of different dishes which is hard to get in other restaurants unless you are with a large group. The food was very good, service prompt and friendly. Atmosphere was very bland. I have to admit the strip mall setting next to "Fred's Chinese" was off putting. After reading some of the reviews I decided to give it a try. Was a little worried about some of the poor reviews from Indians. However the place was packed with Indian customers on a Saturday night. That has to be a good sign. Most of the food was delicious. The rice, however was not flavorful, not even sure if it was a basmati. The naan was just OK. A Thali is a metal tray that comes with Naan, a crisp bread and bowl of rice surrounded by 9 smaller metal dishes with a variety of dishes, soups, yogurt and dessert. All for 12.50. Definately a bargain. One of the dishes had diced beets and I really loved it, and don't even know what it is called. The dahl and chickpea dishes were also excellent. I have had better for dinner consistently at "Welcome" in Framingham, however, this is much closer for me and very reasonably priced. I'm not trying to be picky, however, I will have to say I have had some of the best Indian food around the country and the world so maybe the standards are a bit high. I was sitting near the incense which gave me a bit of a headache, but I was right next to it. I would definately go back, it is an excellent choice.

Good food. Pleasant wait staff. Good chaats on weekend. Samosa chaat was great. Please offer fresh chutney with your dosas.

The food was really tasty and done to perfection! But, they have a very poor service. They keep you waiting for every dish ordered. I ordered the dosas here and it was really awesome. This should be one of your must-haves list if you are in the boston metro area!

Ok, so first off- the food. I was ordering take-out for myself only so just got a few things. Got the vegetable pakoras- they were weird. Well, maybe just different than I've ever had. I will post a picture if I can figure out how. The pakoras I've had in the past have been chopped up veggies formed in to an abstract ball shape, dipped in batter and fried until crispy and crunchy. These were individual pieces of veggies batter-dipped and fried until spongy and greasy. In all fairness, this was a take-out so you can't expect much from fried food but a trip to the oven once home wasnt able to revive them even just a little. The other 2 things I ordered were curries- Malai Kofta and Aloo Gobi. I REALLY wanted to have myself a new Indian food option- this place gets some excellent reviews so i had high hopes. Both curries were identical in color and annoyingly similar in flavor. Boooo! Both were also covered with an orange oil slick- I must have washed my hands 6 times just trying to dab off some of the grease from the tops and fix myself a plate. Neither had much heat (not that all Indian food has to be hot) but neither had any real spice or robust flavor. I certainly wouldn't say either weren't prepared well or were not slightly enjoyable but not even a glimmer of excitement happened while I was eating. I would still say give it a try and decide for yourself but in short, here's why I won't be back: Average flavor greasy food The funky smell of the restaurant No booze available No meat- vegetarian only Some positives: Pleasant service Speedy cook time Reasonable prices (most curries are $10.75 and come with rice) My recommendation would be to give it a shot and decide for yourself but don't be disappointed if you're not impressed.

One of the best and most authentic South indian food joints in the Boston Area. I work in Westborough and we come here often for lunch The $8.75 lunch special is an awesome deal We have a variety of south indian dishes ranging from the dosas to the thali meal and all of it comes out really fresh and authentic We end the meal with a filter coffee Service is quick Prices are low To get south Indian food of a similar quality one would have to venture out to Saravana bhavan in NY

  • Paul M.

For lovers of the strictly vegetarian cuisine of southern India (we looked up the name "Udupi" and found it was a city near the south west coast of India), this place is terrific. I guess we've eaten here at least 5 times over the past few years, and we've never been disappointed. They specialize in Dosas, Uddapams, and curries, and their Rasam-- a brown, spicy thin soup-- is out of this world (very hot for those not into spice, but wonderful for those of us who enjoy the fire). The service is more than adequate, and if you ask questions, they are glad to answer them. And the price is right.

  • Adonia K.

SO good!! We were introduced to Udupi when it was in Ashland by a couple of our Indian friends. I was a little skeptical at first, cause I love my chicken curry, and this place was vegeterian only. I'm glad they took us there because the food was phenomenal! However, due to the distance and the presence of other nearby Indian restaurants, we didn't go back. Until...it opened up in Shrewsbury!! We didn't realize it at first but found out later that it was the same place, just a new location. I always get the channa bhatura and the Mr. gets the palak paneer. The samosas are also very good. The interior decor is a bit simple, but clean and presentable. It has a very home like quality to it and the service has always been very good. Man, I'm craving it now as I type... Very good food at a very good price!

  • Veronica F.

I knew Udupi would be great since the entire dining clientele were made up of Indian people. Great good, amazing prices, my only complaint would be the shabby interior. Let's give this place a face lift!

  • Maria M.

Consistently good!! We had lunch here today and again ordered the masala dosa (I ordered the paper dosa last time) which was very good with the sambar and coconut chutney. We tried the samosa chaat today, which was just what we were craving- - in fact, I had been making this at home not knowing what it was called. The combination of the hot crispy samosa with the tamarind chutney, chickpeas, crispy "stuff" (don't know what it is, but it's good, and that's what the bf called it.. haha), and the cool yogurt was perfect. We also had the upma (cream of wheat) which was quite good- - we asked for pickle on the side, which added a nice sour/ salty touch. We were stuffed!!! We keep coming back! Delicious!

I'd get take out again but won't eat at the restaurant. the food is awesome. I love dosais and they definitely did a good job. lots of flavor in their masala and good consistency in the dosai. good prices. If I was only rating the food, I'd give it more stars, but the problem is the place. They seem to be understaffed. The food somes out quickly but it's difficult to get their attention after that. We had to ask for a few things twice or they didn't come. We didn't realize it wasn't BYOB since there is no bar or alcohol on the menu so we asked them to open our wine. The guy gave us a look and brought over plastic cups and put a wine opener on the table. Plastic cups?!? We could see the wine glasses 5 feet away. We asked about them and he explained they have their own wine so they are for that. I thought it was incredible rude and didn't even tell us that or offer their wine. The worst: their 'cleaning' routine. Twice we saw them clean the tables. They took the water pitcher from the center of the table and poured some leftover water on the table and wiped it down. that's it. water, re-used towel. groosssss.

Ate here for the first time around noon. They have beetroot poriyal and dahi turnip curry on certain days of the week. the menu changes dependjng on what's in season, but the food is always fresh. I live 8 hours from this place, but will find my way back here somehow. This is as good as any food that you'll find in Bangalore. In fact, the owner, Patrick, is from Coorg, and has been dishing up authentic South Indian dishes since 1989. I've seen other Indian restaurants in the area, but if you want South Indian, this is the place to go. (Maybe Udupi's North Indian dishes are great too - I don't know.. Didn't try them.. Maybe next time.) By the way, the service was outstanding! Prompt and with a genuine smile. Had a wonderful lunch.

Good south indian food, good options on the menu. I have tried the thali many times and the dishes are not always the best but the sambar, vada, dosas are always excellent. Bisi bele bhath is perfect!

Udupi is an amazing Indian restaurant. If you like Indian food and are in the Shrewsbury/Worcester area you have to go here. It's a pretty small, nondescript place in a weird half abandoned strip mall. Don't let this throw you off. The food at Udupi is amazing. It's all vegetarian, but I have been here multiple times with meat eaters and they were impressed with their food. They have a big menu and the food is awesome. The waitstaff is very friendly. The food comes out quickly. There was one time that my boyfriend and I went in for dinner, and we were super hungry, and I swear we were in and out in 20 minutes. That included being seated, ordering, eating a veggie samosa appetizer, eating entrees, and paying the bill. They are not messing around here. I wish I lived closer to this place because I would go here way more often.

I have been very regular to this place and love their food. But things change and this is the review of my very recent experience(0ct 13th,2013). We ordered the assorted appetizers. The cutlet and bajji were very poorly done. It was very oily and the bajji was very raw(not crispy). Even the dosa had too much oil. The place is very under-staffed,every order takes a while to come. I do accept they had few people waiting, but even before my husband could eat the last piece of dosa, the owner just took the plate away and asked me if I wanted to take the rest of my dosa home. This is not the way to treat the customers. This was the moment we decided not to go back to this place. They have very bad service.

There are a string of Indian restaurants on Rt.9 in Shrewsbury and not only is this one the best, it's also the only all vegetarian. Don't let the absence of meat scare you away, these dishes are so rich and flavorful you'll get over that after the first bite. I've eaten here for years and love many of the dishes on the menu. I often rotate between the channa massala and the poori korma. The samosas are bigger than most places and served with the usual Indian sauces. As for dessert I enjoy the rose flavored ice cream. Sounds like a weird flavor and I guess it is but it's fantastic! The waiters and staff are accommodating and always have a big smile on their face. I've never met or interacted with the cooks but I bet they're just as peachy. Udupi is also cheaper than most Indian eateries I've encountered. Cheaper in price, not in quality. As I mentioned before I've eaten here many times over the years and it keeps me coming back for more. Thank you Udupi. Thank you. ________________________________________________________ Fun facts: -The first time I ate here I scooped a handful of that stuff they leave by the door on my way out. After shoving it in my mouth I learned it was fennel seed (I hate black liquorish). Not a happy camper on that ride home. -They are closed on Tuesdays, so save yourself the trip.

We loved this place! Loved the curry with okra, the Indian pancake, the cheese and chickpea appetizer, the tomato soup, and the spicy and sour soup. We are not vegetarians and we thought we'd be way out of our comfort zone here...but the dishes were tasty, generous and served with great warmth. Loved the rose ice cream for dessert.

As a lonely little boy working for the first time in Massachusetts, I decided to wander through Route 9 in search for Yelp-able restaurants. I could tell the food was good (first time I've had South Indian vegetarian cuisine), but the service really weighs down the restaurant. Food: Decent. I'm use to having meat in my dishes, but I definitely went to this place with an open mind. I got the Rasam soup to start; a nice kick. Then I followed it up with a dosa. It was good, but I can't really gauge the level of authenticity. As I learn more about South Indian cuisine, I'll become more constructive. Ambiance: Clean atmosphere. Quiet, eerily quiet. Service: Horrible. I understand I'm an Asian man dining by myself. I understand it might look weird, but please, could I be seated? Any seat would be fine...you could just stick me in the back by the corner, while the rest of the restaurant was empty. Oh wait. That's exactly what you did. Then, I asked for suggestions...and I got none. Instead of looking at me with disdain, could you please just recommend me your key dish? No? Fine, you get docked a star, maybe two. Value: Ok value - around $$. Pretty much going to spend somewhere in the teens for the food, but at least its unique.

this review is written by someone who is not a fan of Indian food. Or so she thought before dining at Udupi. Terrific restaurant!! If you think you do not like Indian food, that might be due to the fact that you only tried Northern Indian cousine. Give it a chance and go dine at Udupi. We shared a few dishes all of which were terrific. The bill was surprisingly low for what we have eaten. The service was great on that busy busy Friday night. seriously, GIVE THOSE PEAS A CHANCE..

This food was good! Been there once only, will be back. The spice factor is something I ordinarily stay away from, but the food here was so good, I forgot that I can be prone to heartburn. The hearburn never came, however, quite to the contrary I felt better than ever! I'm leaning toward 5 stars, this food was outstanding! Best tomato soup or soup of any kind, I've had ever, was here. Dosa and more dosa, appetizers, all excellent, not a scrap of meat to be found, and I didn't miss it.

Fantastic! Hands down the best Indian food in Worcester. I recommend the korma and the garlic naan. Everything I have had is fantastic. I will be back!

  • Punit S.

Food here is delicious, only reason why I put up with the poorness of service and the consisntent funk of taste in their tap water over the last three years of dining here. Food is moderately priced, paneer makhani is one of the best in the area and the only place in the Boro's to serve indochinese, although only on sat/sun

Typically i don't like to eat at vegetarian restraunts but this place is pretty good. The vegetarian thing can be overlooked since the textures and flavors of all the dishes make you forget that you are not having any meat

Had a very excellent takeout. Went here a few years ago and found the food a bit greasy and bland, but not this time. The southern Indian regional food menu is different from the usual Indian, and is all vegetarian, so I will explain what we had (for 2 people, and we were stuffed afterwards). The Poori Korma was 2 puffy breads, and as this was a takeout the korma was served separately in a bowl. The korma was a medium thin sauce with peas in. The Mutter Paneer ws just like the menu described, again a medium to thin sauce. The Baigan Bartha curry was cubes of veg including eggplant, not so much sauce, and this was the spiciest of the dishes, although none were very spicy. The Peshwari Naan was a standout, this is a sweet soft flatbread with a fruity coconut filling. It goes with curry or you could have it as a dessert. For dessert we had Madras Special Payasam. This was a fragrant rice pudding, and a portion was big enough for 2 to share. I didn't like the texture of the vermicelli used as much as the usual pudding rice, but that's just my preference. Size: the breads were large and filling but the curry sizes were 1 person portions. Rice came with the curries and it was plain white rice, nice. Overall, I will be back much more frequently, if only for more Peshwari Naan, and maybe they could make the food more spicy for us UK curry eaters.

This is the favorite of my co-workers and I for lunch - none of us are vegetarians but we all love good indian food, and this is GOOD indian food. The menu is big and I haven't had a bad meal yet. Based just on the food I would give it 5 stars, but the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. The waitstaff is curt and there is no decor, but it can be overlooked thanks to the great food. I have never been for dinner but for lunch the restaurant is always nearly empty.

Excellent Indian vegetarian food. Paper masala dosa and bhel puri was very good. Rasmalai was okay - missing pistachios and saffron. Worth a second visit!

So yeah most restaurants west of 495 fail compared to the counterparts to the east. With ethnic food the trend is far more extreme. I have been noticing that there is very good Indian to be had (along with the not so good) in Metro-west land. The location is not ideal, it's in strip mall. I'm dreaming of the baigan bartha as I write this... * YASMG * best mullingtawny and rasam soups I've tried. * get your Dosai on here! * vegetarian * better than most places in Cambridge and Boston.

Me and my pregnant wife went to this restaurant one fine day. We like the dosa at this place. This time we offered the leftover raita from yesterday. I suspected that but didn't paid much heed at that time. After an hour my wife threw up everything she ate. That was my last visit :-(

feel like having a masala dosa, ? go check this out ..... . one of the very few indian restaurants in the area which only serves veg food and specialises in breakfast food. good old south indian stuff... cant beat that !!

  • Donna H.

I love the food. I love the fact I can order ANYthing on the menu without having to worry about "hidden" meat ingredients e.g. chicken stock, beef broth, gelatin, or lard. The waitstaff are friendly and helpful about explaining what a dish consists of. The restaurant used to be in Framingham but relocated to Shrewsbury. Many diners travel here from the Framingham area to continue to enjoy the food. That's an even better endorsement than I can give.

I've had better south indian food elsewhere, so maybe I'm being this picky but I'll summarize it: pros: good, fast service, and very varied menu (dishes from both north and south india_ cons: none of them are authentic we were living around there for 3 weeks, and was craving some home food hence went here a couple of times. It does the job, gets you some curry when you need it. but don't expect fireworks

Udupi is the name of a town in India's Karnataka state. Over several decades, the name of the town has become synonymous with good South Indian vegetarian food, regardless of whether it is of Karnataka origin. But this place really does seem to be owned by folks from Karnataka, as the pictures of Yakshagana (a traditional Karnataka dance form) performances adorning the walls testify. Okay... let's get to the food and the service. The food is really good. I have tried their thali meal, pooris (they make them really big and yummy), chapathis, masala dosa, and vadas. They were all good and tasted authentic. Sometimes, the white chutney they serve with the rice-and-lentil dishes is a little too cold for my liking. Their sambaar is usually very good. The presentation of the food is a little low-key, but that does not seem to be bothering anyone, as I've seen the place to be full of customers whenever I visit. The decor is spartan - just one rectangular room with off-white walls. I would have loved it if they provided some extra paper napkins at the table, so that I wouldn't have to ask for more every time. Another negative point is that I feel they do not serve a large enough quantity for some of the the curries like Mutter-Paneer (Green Peas and Cottage Cheese). I had Mutter-Paneer with rice and garlic naan the other day and the quantity of the curry they served was just not enough. Regardless, I believe this is the place to go if you're in the Worcester area and wish to try South Indian vegetarian cuisine. For North Indian cuisine, I would recommend Surya Indian Cuisine over this one.

I decided to visit Udupi after seeing good reviews. But frankly I was disappointed. I felt the food was not very authentic South Indian. The mango lassi was a disappointment too. Service was not bad.

So I only went here once, for takeout, but I have to say that their Vegetable Korma was one of the best Indian dishes I've ever had. It had just the right amount of spiciness, and a lemony flavor that contrasted with the creaminess of the curry perfectly. The staff were very smiley and friendly, and the restaurant itself looked cozy and relaxed. It's a bit formal, too, so I'd dress up a bit if I went back for a sit down meal. The only thing I can complain about is that it was a bit expensive; 14.95? (I think) for two samosas, rice, and enough Korma for MAYBE two people. Summary: still worth the price, definitely check it out

Went here for lunch today and it was really yummy!!! We shared the garlic naan, vegetable samosas (order comes with 2), Aloo Gobi, and Baigan Bartha (my fave!). Leftovers were just as good! Yummm. I will be back here again and again.

This place is terrific. However, you should know that it moved to Shrewsbury from Framingham, probably 30 minutes from the old location. 508-459-5099 378 Maple Ave Shrewsbury

The place is great! We eat here all the time. Its cheap and its good. Some things better on the menu than others (my opinion). I like the dosas, thali, and vegetable korma. I don't like the spininch saag because it looks and taste like baby food. Other than that this is a pretty good restaurant.

This restaurant has excellent Indian food. The atmosphere is pretty basic: glass-topped tables in a very conservative and spartan, yet earthily colored dining area. The service is eager to please and helpful. And the food is all vegetarian. The appetizer sampler was very good. The vegetable utthapam, the chef's special, and the rasam soup were all also very good. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the menu is also quite large. I must be honest that I did not think that I would find such exceedingly high-quality (mainly Southern) Indian food in the Worcester area.

Advertised as a vegetarian restaurant, Udupi has a large menu that would satisfy anyone. If you're craving South Indian cuisine, Udupi will not disappoint. The staff is very friendly and the food is fresh. Try the iddly, dhai vada, dal papri, any of the dosas, channa batura. They also have falooda (rose flavored ice creamy drink with vermicelli). It's worth the drive.

It reminds me of India very much. The smells especially. Lots of great South Indian vegetarian dishes, like idli, vada, uttapam, dosa, and a lot of interesting curries. They even have some special thali which comes with a lot of things and some appetizers. Really cool place, really great service. The servers are great and friendly.

Udupi has great food and is reasonably priced, but the ambience isn't fantastic. When we were there the ceiling was leaking and one of the employees was going on about how they could not fix it due to landlord issues. It's true that their current location is surrounded by many empty businesses. They would be well served to move to a better location. Having said that, their food is excellent and reasonably priced, and their service is great too. I'm not sure why their entry says "no" for alcohol as they do serve beer and wine.

I have YET to eat something here I didn't LOVE. When I crave vegetarian and Indian cuisine, I just have to come here. I have since departed from my usual egg plant-based dishes. We have ventured to try other options on the menu, such as the puffy bread and chana masala or their paneer. Food comes out piping hot. Rice is always fresh! Their rice flour crepes are crispy, light, ethereal. Maybe a bit greasy when you eat with your fingers, but it is so flavorful you just wipe and eat! No frills. Clean and very humble. Its about the food. Inexpensive (16 onz beer $5.50!, main dishes $12.00 OR less)! Get a combo plate for appetizers! M O N E Y! Still a hole in the wall. Still excellent! Still makes you think, almost, you will stop being a carnivore. Maybe...

My wife and I have dined at Indian restaurants all over the US, so we know what's what. And this place has some of the best Indian food we've had. The decor is not fancy, but the people ar really nice and the sevice is excellent. We highly reccommend Udupi. Bhavan. M&S, Fairfield, Iowa

Did go for south Indian where you get chole masala, cabbage fry, dal, rasam, papad and white rice. The quantity they give is very less. The sambhar was sweet infact(I don't like it to sweet than nice and spicy) they don't have the quality chutney for dosa and idli. I would prefer other restaurant nearby westborough.they also charge for extra chutney if u ask, first of all it is not sufficient for one dosa or one idly and charge extra for chutney. Would recommend other indian restaurants in town.

The best vegetarian udupi food in the north east. Have been here 5 times in the last 3 months. The South Indian Thali is a must try, reminds me of the food that we get back in Bangalore.

Great daal makhani though a bit pricey. I get parathas from there as well. I like it, but it's a veggie spot so can't get near which is a staple for my meals - so usually take out with some other leftovers

The best I can say is "meh". The ambiance is nothing to write home about. My meal, saag paneer, tasted about average. The owner sent breads to my table for me to try without me asking for it. That was a nice touch. If I'm desperate for Indian, I'll come here again, but as it stands, one visit is enough for me.

Average food, average service and average ambience. This is our third visit here - our experience with the first two visits was better than this one. They have great spring dosa which brings us back for more. But other than that, all other items are just average including sambhar, chatni, uttapam, mango lassi, samosa and rava dosa. Nevertheless, I will return for spring dosa.

I have not been to India so I cannot compare it or comment about it's authenticity. All that I know is that my wife and I enjoyed the food and thought it was heavenly flavorful and fresh. My wife is vegetarian and I eat fish and it is very hard to find a suitable menu for her. We have been to many Indian restaurants, that range from not deserving even one star to others that we judge the others against. For Southern Indian food, I haven't found anything close to the now closed Anna Purna in Worcester until now. This was a memorable meal and this is the top of the scale for us. The best. We shared the wonderful Onion Potato Masala Dorsai, and Vegetable Biryani. She had a Chokoo smoothie and I had the Mysore coffee to drink. We had for desert the warm Badam Halwa with Rose Ice Cream. (If your day is going really bad, stop in here, sit and relax with the latter and a cup of the Mysore coffee. It is a panacea). We look forward to returning. Great service, clean but a little stark on atmosphere.

I am somehow intrigued by the excellent reviews on yelp , but we never found this place good enough. A South Indian by heart , I do understand that I cannot get the food of same quality here , but udupi disappointed me. The filter coffee was not strong and lacked flavor. It came quite cold too, same case with the chaai. The sambhar didn't taste as good as it does in other similar restaurants like udupi in the US. The only good part was the dosa. The rava masala dosa tasted pretty good ! The coconut chatni tasted quite bland. Overall this place can do much better.

This place is so good. Big menu with a ton of options, and I've never had a bad dish there. Very flavorful and really friendly staff. It's also quite big so you never have to wait very long although they don't take reservations. The kadai bhendi curry (okra curry) is one of the best things I've ever eaten in my entire life. If I could change just one thing it would be indicating vegan options on the menu. I'm vegan and every time I go there I have to start asking about my options and I have gotten conflicting answers before, so I'm not sure everyone n the staff knows exactly what's vegan and what's not. Indicate in the menu and add vegan dessert options and this will be heaven on earth.

My fiancé and I came here for dinner on Sunday night. Walking in to the strip mall restaurant and seeing that we were the only non-Indian people in the place seemed like a great start!! Dinner did not disappoint. I love Indian food, but haven't branched out very far beyond my few favorites. We both decided we wanted to order only things we hadn't had before. We started with the Rasa Vada (lentil donuts dipped in rasam - a spicy soup), and the donuts were not heavy, nice crispy exterior, and the soup was delightfully hot. We also ordered mango lassis, and the texture and flavor was completely on point. We then got a Masala Dosa and the Kara Podi Uthappam (pancake with a dry spicy chutney rub on top). Oh. My. God. That masala dosa was one of the best things I've had in a long time. The potato and onion filling was just perfection. The taste was stunningly delicious. (The uthappam was also really good, but paled in comparison to the dosa in my opinion, which was the star of our dinner). We also shared a curry - Baigan Bartha (cooked mashed eggplant with tomato, onion, and spices). Also so so so good, and even better the next day. Really simple but supremely flavorful. Finally for dessert, we shared an order of Rasmalai (homemade cottage cheese balls in rosewater condensed milk with pistachios). Unlike anything I've ever eaten before. I think there was cardamom in the milk too - really tasty, unusual, authentic dessert. Basically I'm just wondering when we can go back, and how soon.

The only place in the country that has given me the "Bengaluru-feel". The Mysore thaali is super delicious. Bisibelebhat is perhaps the best you will get to taste, ever!

Was visiting Worcester for a conference and Siri sent me here. I lucked out. Food was very fresh and prompt service. Dosa and vegetable cutlet was excellent. Only drawback is ambiance not great. It's in a shopping center surrounded by several empty businesses.

Udupi Bhavan is an authentic high quality southern Indian vegetarian restaurant. I stopped by tonight and enjoyed the Udupi special - rasam, two delicious vada in yogurt sauce with tamarind sauce on the side, and the wonderfully crisp and flavorful rava masala dosa with sambar. A skillfully prepared bargain at $14.95. By way of background, my family were regulars at Udupi in earlier locations in Ashland and Framingham. We often visited with food literate friends, including the author of an Indian cookbook and the director of a program in Indian studies. All sampled widely from the menu and were extremely happy with the food. I am pleased that Udupi has maintained the quality of its food and the warmth of its hospitality. (Note: Udupi has added a small selection of Chinese dishes for the enjoyment of a largely Indian vegetarian clientele. I did not sample those dishes.)

This place has the FRESHEST most delicious indian food you're going to find. The location and decor are certainly nothing special, but the staff are very friendly and welcoming and everything on the menu is guaranteed to impress. This is classic home cooked food, not the stuff you get at the buffets. My fiancé is Indian and says most of the food they serve is the food you eat everyday in India. We come here at least once or twice a week. I highly recommend the chana bhature, masala dosa, and dal makhani! You can't go wrong...

One of the most delicious dinning experiences I've had in a long time! Everything was exquisite! Our waiter was very nice and extremely helpful. He helped us pick out our meals and did well! Best Indian food I have ever had and didn't miss meat at all. I do have to say the ambience is lacking but everything else was so amazing that it didn't matter! If you haven't tried this place you have to go!

One of the better South Indian restaurants in the area. The dosas are fairly thick (like they're supposed to be) and not ultra-crispy.

I absolutely love this place. I eat (mostly) kosher, so the ability to order off a full menu is fairly rare. I'm accustomed to going into a restaurant and first looking for the 2-3 items I can actually eat, then picking one of them and moving on. Usually it's the same dish at every single restaurant I go to. So, when I first went to Udupi with an Indian friend of mine, it was fantastic to be able to order off of a full menu, and almost everything I tried tasted great. I love meat and have been to other vegetarian restaurants and been... disappointed. Not being from South Asia, I cannot speak to how this compares to home-cooked meals, but in my mind it feels as if it is. The food doesn't look great or "pretentious" but it is very good and comes in large portions. This is the place to go when you are looking for a good meal at a good price and don't care if the decor is bland.
