Awesome ace in the neighborhood. I've been here twice I get the yummy maki so good. I also had a mango sake highly recommended.

I've been ordering from Village sushi for a couple of years and I can honestly say I have never been super impressed by the food nor have I found it unacceptable. That is until tonight as we were delivered our third consecutive cold meal. My girlfriend called to let them know, not ask for money back, but just to let them know about our poor experience. Instead of an apology all she got was a fight from the woman on the telephone. Now I will be schleping to JP Seafood to get my sushi and japanese food.

I ordered volcano maki, yummy maki, spicy salmon maki, shrimp tempura maki, scallion pancakes, & seaweed salad. My brother and I were having a meaaaannn craving for some sushi that was local around us. I loved everything! Would come again. Appreciated the cleanliness of the restaurant and we came on Labor Day which was quiet and relaxing.

Tried this restaurant for the first time and it didn't disappoint me. The food was good and the price was reasonable. You can dine outside and the atmosphere was great. I like the decoration of the restaurant. It is clean and comfortable. I will definitely go back.

Food here is still pretty good: sushi is fresh and tasty, bibimbap is good. Unfortunately, the service has gotten pretty bad. They don't seem to be able to keep waitstaff for very long, and they don't seem to train them very well. We waited 15 minutes to order anything, and another 20 minutes before our drinks showed up. I had to go find the waiter twice to move things along. I hope it improves.

Having recently moved to Roslindale was just looking to fill a sushi craving -- was more than pleasantly surprised when we fell into this restaurant. We got the Steamed Sesame Tofu as an appetizer and having a slight tofu obsession was already in love -- it is cooked / seasoned PERFECT here. Honestly, I think I could eat this dish all day everyday. For dinner we got an assortment of maki & sushi -- all was good nothing quite as wow factor as the tofu. Highly recommend -- easy to park & reasonable prices.

Not many options for Korean/Sushi in the South Shore. So instead of trekking to Brighton and spending hours finding a parking spot - we decided to check out this neck of the woods. It is about 15-20 min drive from Quincy with ample of street parking. Upon entering - it look like they just had their dinner rush (we were there around 7:30ish on Saturday night). Place was half full but the empty tables were not bussed (with leftover plates from the prior customers). We were greeted within 2 mins by a server. Think there were only 2 servers in the restaurant. The place is not super big but comfortable enough and the interior decor (paper umbrellas, waterfall, special lighting) created enough ambiance to the place. They have a huge variety in their menu (the menu listed on yelp is limited). They offer a mixture of Thai, Korean and Japanese. We ordered the following: Appetizers 1. Fancy Maki (White tuna, salmon, Lettuce, avocado, cucumber Wrapped in soybean paper, with black tobiko, mayo) 2. Volcano Maki (Deep fried soft shell crab, avocado maki, topped with crab stick, Mushroom, scallop, tobiko, spicy mayo, tempura flakes ( Baked )) Comment on maki rolls - flavor and creativity was great but poorly rolled (falls apart too easily) Entrees: Beef Bulgogi (decent portion and seasoning) Spicy Seafood Udon (great assortment of seafood - wished it was more spicy) This place does the trick in satisfying your craving for Korean and Sushi - but don't expect the wow factor. This place would be a 3.5 star rating.

Worst sushi I've had in years. The rice was falling apart and the fish just didn't taste good at all. Food prep was cafeteria like. I ordered a salad with Tuna and it was just plain awful - the tuna was over spiced and had very little taste. Simple conjecture was that it was a Sunday thing ie, fish wasn't fresh and b team chefs were at the helm. The wait for the food was inexplicable - very few people there and it took a long while for simple dishes to come out. All that said, our waitress was awesome. Very accommodating and an excellent communicator. Without her, this would have been my first one star rating ever.

3.5 Stars For some reason I had it in my mind I would not like this place. Anyways I recently had lunch at Village Sushi & Grill and was pleasantly surprised. The lunch menu is moderately priced, the food was pretty good, the portions were substantial, the service was good, and the Japanese decorum was enjoyable. Nice to have a sushi restaurant in the village.

I have been here many times as well as had takeout and delivery. The staff there is fabulous and the food is amazing every time. Delivery takes forever, like an hour or more even on a slow night, so it's worth picking up if you can. I specifically recommend their lunch boxes, sashimi starter, wasabi shumai, wild fire hand roll, summer breeze maki and Hawaiian maki--although I've had everything and haven't found anything I didn't like. The restaurant is clean and ambiance is calming. In the warm months, there is a great seating area out back.

I have both eaten inside of this place and ordered sashimi takeout from them. Their service isn't bad and neither is their fish. Although, Kiku Yama in Dedham must make their miso soup a different way because it tastes better. The miso soup here tastes a bit like plastic for some reason, no matter how many times I've ordered it and tried it. I still recommend this for sushi places and I don't think that my miso issue should deter anyone from eating here.

Came here on a week night, I think it was a Weds night and it was pretty empty. I ordered the spicy salmon maki, but the waitress misunderstood me and gave me the salmon terriyaki meal. normally, I would have been annoyed but this meal was amazing so how could i be?! my boyfriend got sushi and it was amazing. A bit more pricey but definitely worth it! we will most definitely be back!

A very unpleasant delivery experience. Placed a modest-sized order over the internet, and waited an hour when the place is very close. When the order arrived, I asked if the receipt required a signature. The man just said "tip" two to three times and didn't even answer my question...the food was not good either. Of note, would advise strongly against the scallion pancake. It is thick, omelette-like, and limp.

Love Village Sushi. We get take out here often and when we dine in the staff and service is always great. It's really nice in the warm weather to sit on the patio. The prices are really reasonable and whenever we bring picky sushi guests, they always rave about it after. Highly recommended.

Ordered from here for the first time last night. I ordered delivery and god the ok dol bibimbap, the spicy tuna sushi, and the Alaskan sushi. Delivery took over an hour :( but the food was pretty good. The bibimbap was a SMALL portion though!! Any where else it can usually feed 2 people....but not here. It was just enough for me. It was also lacking some flavor. The sushi was pretty good, not the freshest, but decent. Also for those 3 things, it was $35...kind of expensive I thought. However the food is overall good and I would probably order again.

I have only been to Village Sushi and Grill late at night and each time i've gone it's been pretty empty. Not sure how it is during the day. The food is pretty tasty and I especially love the service. Will definitely keep coming to this restaurant.

Village Sushi is great. I've been here many times and the food and service are consistently very good. I usually go for lunch and get a bentou box. The sushi is fresh and delicious and the sides in the box, like the croquettes, are also very good. The sake-tinis are likewise very nice. Check the website or call before you go, though. I went to meet a friend there recently, but the restaurant was closed. The sign on the door said something about (I think) closing on Mondays and Tuesdays for lunch. Whatever the days were, it seemed a little random. Call first to be sure they're open.

This place is about a 3 for the food and closer to a 2 for service. It's nice to have a sushi place right in the Village that delivers to our apt. in Roslindale. The food is usually pretty good. We generally go with the seaweed salad (not the best I've had but pretty good), the vegetable-only tempura starter (great but not always the hottest by the time we get it), the shocking maki roll (because we don't love the spicy tuna roll so this is like one step above that), the eel avocado (great!), and the Jazz Maki (pretty good). I've enjoyed a number of other sushi places in Boston and elsewhere better than this place, but for delivery to the dead zone of Rozzie that we seem to live in, I'm glad for it. I have to say, though, that we've put up with poor service from them before and again last night, and honestly, I probably wouldn't order from them again. The first instance happened months ago. We always order online through their website for delivery. You can pay your tip on your credit card. I guess they had a delivery person who was new or didn't do deliveries that often, but when he delivered the food, he was apparently really upset that my girlfriend wasn't tipping him on the spot (like in cash). I guess he didn't realize SHE ALREADY PAID AND TIPPED HIM. He was literally yelling and arguing with my girlfriend on our porch. Even if she wasn't planning to tip him, which would be sh*tty of her but her prerogative, he has no right to yell at her on her own porch. Eventually they were able to call the restaurant and he was able to barely understand what happened, but honestly, it was such a turn-off, especially for my super nice girlfriend who would never dream of not tipping, even for terrible service. I mean, they already charge a delivery fee and it's sushi, so it's not like it's super cheap. Last night was the worst. I placed an hour at 6:27 pm. The standard is 45-60 minutes for delivery. At 7:35, I called the restaurant to check in b/c nothing had been delivered. They said (no apology) that the driver had just left, which means the food would've been over an hour late. Already a little miffed, but we waited. Honestly, I'm maybe a 5 minute drive from the restaurant, so no reason it should've taken longer than 5 minutes to arrive. At 8, when the food still hadn't arrived (now 90 minutes from when I placed my order), I called again. The first person who answered then passed me off to explain myself again to another person. He said he would call the driver and call me back. He called me back a few minutes later and said the driver was on his way! Aagghh! At this point, I'm starting to get so annoyed. You deliver to us all the time! It's not like you don't know where we are or that there is any traffic. I was really calm and tried to explain myself really clearly, but he just was saying, "These things happen, with traffic and things," but it's only a 5 minute drive away! I said, "I understand that but that's part of business. Can you please give me a full refund?" He said no, I guess because I ordered online and partially because they just wouldn't do that. Then he kept thinking I said I wanted the driver to not deliver the food and then refund my money. Anyway, long story short, he wouldn't refund me any way, they weren't very apologetic or accommodating, but he said he'd give me 10% off my next order. I'm honestly worried, though, that they wouldn't have made a note about it and won't remember. When the delivery guy finally arrived, he actually said, "Sorry. I only found about the order an hour after you placed it," which made us think that the restaurant forgot that we even placed an order and when I finally called after an hour, they made the food then and didn't own up to their mistake. Honestly, at that point, the tempura was cold, which is the only hot thing we even ordered! Ugh! So, yeah, not the world's worst but possibly not worth the hassle. I'd rather do pick-up or dine-in at JP Sushi in JP.

This place is very very good. My boyfriend is a native of LA and is insanely picky about east coast sushi. Like he won't eat it. Or will complain bitterly if he has to. 4 words: He. Liked. This. Sushi. Now, it's no Katsuya (unfortunately I'm now a LA sushi snob too), but it is very very delicious. I highly recommend giving it a shot. Word on the street says it's owned by the same people as JP Seafood. Don't know if it's true, but that's supposed to be great too so I'd believe it. Outdoor seating if you want it.

What a surreal experience I just had there. We were greeted by a server who was so frazzled and on the verge that I asked her if we should come back another time. The sushi chefs were Hispanic. And flamenco music played in the background. My wife's okdul bibimbap came out 10 minutes before the sushi my son and I had ordered. I hate that. I did enjoy the sunshine roll - salmon with cilantro and lemon juice. The fancy roll could have been good, but it was too loosely wrapped and fell apart. The rest was mediocre. The decor was tired: holes in the wall hanging, lots of dings and stains on the wall. I'm surprised by all the 4- and 5-star reviews. This place is a 3 on a good night. I moved to Roslindale a year and a half ago and this became my and my boyfriend's go-to sushi place right away because the sushi is so good. We have never dined there but we order delivery or takeout about 2-3 times per month. It always takes about an hour for delivery to arrive, which is fine even though they charge for delivery to our area. I've decided I prefer getting it delivered and waiting instead of trying to pick it up at the restaurant. When we have ordered takeout, it has never been ready when I arrive, even when I am 10-15 minutes later than when they tell me to show up. Last time I picked up takeout the people behind the counter ignored me even though I couldn't have been standing any closer, until I waved my hands and asked to be helped. Last week we ordered delivery and I was extra hungry and basically watching out the window for the food to come, and the driver called before he even pulled up to my house and yelled "HELLO I AM HERE!" Then he proceeded to curse very loudly as he was walking up to the door and demanded to see my coupon when he was still 20 feet away. Fortunately that was the only time he's been our delivery driver. Otherwise they are usually normal/nice. Usually I wouldn't give 4 stars with this service but the sushi itself is superb. My favorite Village Sushi specialty rolls are the Sunshine maki and the Heart Attack maki.

This place is wonderful. My only regret is that I waited so long to try it! The ingredients are all very fresh and tasty and the fusion maki I tried was just perfect. The flavors were very subtle and melded together nicely. The hamachi kama might have been the best I've ever had - it was cooked very well, no burnt spots and just a little salt. And the service was delightful - our waitress was extremely friendly and patient. This is definitely my new favorite and I'll be visiting often.

We had the Village sushi boat for 4 + appetizers delivered last evening. The sushi selection and quality were really superb. Fresh, generously cut yellow tail, tuna, octopus, salmon, escolar, eel, shrimp, and abalone. Also the roe maki was nice surprise. Even the presentation for a delivered meal was beautiful. The restaurant supplies more than enough wasabi and ginger so that we had no need to be careful with portions. The 4 of us started with the miso soup and some ebi shumai(wicked good!) and vegie koroke(very nice as well)and in the end we were really stuffed. It was more than we needed but aside from losing the california roll nobody could decide which item we should forgo for the next round;we will certainly do a repeat performance. BTW, I am rarely motivated to write reviews particularly with sushi as generally when I have good sushi I also feel a bit ripped off; but this was pretty reasonable.

Pretty good sushi. Decent prices. Glad they have delivery, even though the delivery guy was awful! But otherwise pretty solid. My suggesting, and it's not on the menu, get the Idaho Roll (tempura sweet potato roll) and add avocado, you can thank me now!

LOVE Village Sushi! There is a large menu to choose from of all sorts of sushi...everyone is bound to find something they will enjoy! There is even options for the non sushi lovers. The service is GREAT! They always are there to refill your water and deliver your food at a timely fashion. This spot is definitely one of the better places to enjoy sushi.

Love this restaurant!!!!!!!! My cousin told me about it couple of years ago and I always meant to try it by never did until 2 Saturdays ago we just walked in , wasn't that busy therefor the service was quick. There menu is 5-6 pages long with so many new item that I haven't tried before or knew about (I'm sushi lover I eat it at least 1-2 times a week) It was so delicious that I went back the next week ordered for take out and yes they do deliver

It's my "go to" sushi place since I live pretty close. I've been to plenty of sushi places in the Los Angeles area, and this pretty much meets my standards for sushi. The miso is pretty good for a starter. I usually order a set of California and Philadelphia rolls to go with my meal. The atmosphere is pretty quiet and it's not too busy so you're almost guaranteed to be seated right away. There's also a take out option too, but I like dining in because it has a very relaxing vibe. I'm a regular over here and i highly rec!

There is an old Shinto saying that translates loosely into, "It is better to serve well than to serve too many, too often, or too much". Or maybe I saw it on an old episode of Kung Fu in my childhood. Nevertheless, it comes to mind here. This restaurant proves how untrue that tired old saying really is. They do many, many things very well. The menu includes Japanese and Korean dishes -- and of course there's a full line of sushi and sashimi. I've tried dozens of dishes here of every variety -- and I've had a few hundred boats worth of sushi. It has all, always been excellent. Unfortunately, the service has sometimes been annoyingly slow, though the waitstaff are always apologetic and attentive when it is. Outside dining is a plus when the weather is nice -- and sometimes even when it isn't.

If there's one thing my fiancée misses about her native Vancouver, it's sushi. That city has so much fresh salmon and tuna coming in -- and so many master fish slicers -- that there's a killer sushi place as often as there's a wannabe hip burrito place in Boston. Sure, there's Fugakyu, O Ya, and Duozo, and they're great, but they're "great" is Vancouver's "normal", and it comes at a pretty healthy price. After moving to Roslindale from Charlestown, we searched Yelp for restaurants that delivered and found Village Sushi & Grill. And what a welcome find it was. The fish is so fresh it talks back to you (wait, wrong restaurant), and the quality of the preparation is on par or better than the more expensive options downtown. The staff, from the person taking the order to the delivery driver, are super friendly, too. Reserving one star for when we finally walk into the village to eat inside. But for now, the lady is very, very happy, and that makes me happy.

Against my better judgement I ordered the Pad Thai. Yea, Thai food in a Korean Restaurant?. Kinda like ordering Lobster in Kansas City. I admit I was wrong. I had the option of shrimp or chicken, I opted for tofu. Plate came out luke warm and the tofu was cold. Waitron was nowhere to be found. Had to go chase her down with plate in hand. It came back in two minutes hot but now I have microwaved noodles...so yummy. Rather inedible. Told the waitron it was not good and she took it away and gave me a check. Now get this! There was an extra charge for the tofu. Disappointed, I paid the check and tipped. I just hate it when a restaurant thinks they can give you lousy service and food and thing, 'So What?' Go to JP Seafood instead. A mile up Washington Street

I've been coming here for years, and have never been disappointed with this place. Just about everything they offer on the menu is delicious, including their Korean bibimbap. Other than the specialty rolls, my favorites are the unagi (eel), and spicy tuna rolls. They also have very tasty edamame and seaweed salad. One of my favorite things about this place is their outdoor patio, which makes for a very relaxing dining experience. As I said I've been coming here for years, and will continue to do so as ling as they're around.

A warm and inviting environment with happy, swimming fish projected onto the wall of Chinese calligraphy, I would have given 5 stars if the tables weren't placed so closely together. Our waitress was sweet and patient as I debated from the large menu selection. In trying to sample everything, I got the Maki combo which came in 18 pieces including California, Idaho (sweet potato) and tekka. I had "supplementary" Sexy maki which included tuna, eel, shrimp, avocado and mayo in a soybean paper. While sipping Sapporo beer and getting green tea ice cream for dessert, I forfeited $37 in the end. I admit, if I didn't have the insatiable appetite of a NFL'er, where less than 30 sushi pieces will make me pout, I came expecting to pay a pretty penny since sushi / maki / sashimi are all understandably pricey everywhere. My only gripe is that if you're a table for 2 near the sushi chefs, you're literally 12 inches away from the next table of 2, and need to maintain a certain volume in order to avoid becoming a table of 4...

Delicious sushi, cozy place, good service and reasonable prices. Their special rolls are more creative and delicious. Definitely my favorite sushi in the area!

I am definitely a fan of this place. I've only been once but it knocked me off my feet. If I'd been more times to compare I would probably give it five stars. I ordered the Sunshine Maki, which is salmon, lemon, cilantro, cucumber, and it was divine. I went at night for a to-go order and they still served up real freshness. I will definitely go back and I recommend you do to.

I ordered delivery from them last night and it was yummy. I had dumpling appetizer and three rolls (spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail and idaho maki). they were yummy, the delivery was on time and very tasty! i will definitely go back to see what it's like in the actual restauarnt. although the reviews ave been shotty, i'll try!

I had never had sushi that I enjoyed until I tried my husband's Volcano Maki at Village Sushi. The combination of chewy rice, fried soft shell crab, spicy wasabi, and earthy mushroom won me over. I could taste everything inside without being overwhelmed by seaweed. I came back the following week with a friend, and we tried the Idaho Maki, made with fried sweet potato. We also had the shrimp tempura and miso soup...delicious. I didn't give five stars because the service is somewhat slow. For example, I had to flag the waitress down to get a drink refill, and then we had to remind her to take our check.

I come for sushi here atleast every other month and sometimes I do take out as well. The menu is 5-6 pages long but there is are so many sushi options to choose from! The lunch box specials are also worth while if you want a small variety to eat. I come here alot with my sister and 5 year old niece who loves the shumai. The staff here is friendly and the service is good. Nice sushi spot for Roslindale!

Udon was suspect, made me feel sick. When I called to complain, they told me that feeling sick was my problem. They sent someone to pick up the food, and called the police on me.

Picture if you will, New Years Eve 2009. Two starving and desperate travelers braving the wilds of Roslindale in search of some dinner. Dinner as you can imagine is a must on New Years Eve. How else can one ingest toxic amounts of alcohol without a proper padding in ones stomach? Riddle me that. Riddle me, goddamnit. Said travelers would have eaten pizza, if all of the pizza shops in the known universe (meaning on our path of travel from home to Roslindale) weren't closed. We would have eaten greasy Chinese, but no rational person ever eats Chinese food before drinking. Naturally Chinese food is the only known sure fire cure for hangovers and 3:00am egg roll fixes. Holy crap on a snow white field, a gift from the gods, Village Sushi happens to be open and not crowded. Stomachs rumble as a very polite server leads us to a table across from the sushi bar, perhaps she realizes that I like to watch the chefs work. Whatever. We order a good size sushi combo platter and get to work. A siren wails warning people, servers and all nearby traffic to get out of the way while we brutally attack the sushi. Poor fish. Poor vegetable matter. You had know idea that you tasted this good and that you would die at the hands of savage omnivores. Super fresh tuna and salmon gave their lives. Delicate fried sweet potato and flavorful avocado explode in my mouth. Buckets of steaming hot miso rain down from the sky. Dear lord, you've done it again! The price rounds out the experience for me. I think we spent about $25 and were perfectly satisfied. With a proper rice n fish stomach filling we were properly primed for an evening filled with completely too much booze and revelry. I solemnly swear that Village Sushi saved my life and is probably the only reason why I am not hungover like a total a-hole right now.

Great sushi -- fresh fish with warm, moist rice and bright flavors. I was happy that brown rice was an option with the sushi, and the rice was not cold or dried out, which sometimes happens at JP Seafood Cafe when I order my sushi with brown rice. The prices were very reasonable. The decor is nice, with lots of light coming in from the back doors, stone buddha statues and Japanese scrolls; the service was fast but not too friendly.

I'm a regular here. When I first moved to Roslindale 8 years ago they were still new to town and I was thrilled to have a restaurant serving fresh Japanese and Korean dishes in my new hood. About 100 meals later I am still a fan. Their bento boxes at lunch are a great deal and I'm also a big fan of their bi bim bap. The sushi is fresh and reasonable priced. I'm not a fan of their noodle dishes though. Some folks might like them but they're not for me. The dining room is nice, especially for Rosi village, and when the weather is nice you can eat outside on their back patio which is very cool. Service is friendly and efficient. They do a good take-out/delivery business so sometimes the kitchen might get backed up but most meals come with some miso soup to enjoy while you are waiting and if you get an appetizer it will definitely be on your table quickly.

I used to live in Roslindale and so wish that I still did, if only for the proximity to Village Sushi. My boyfriend and I love this place. The staff have come to know us, and are so friendly that the place feels really homey to me. The food here is consistently good, and for the price, it's outstanding. We get the sushi-sashimi combo and usually a roll or two. I agree with one of the other reviewers who suggested that ordering chef-selected items is the best way to go; the fish is undoubtedly fresher. We really love the steamed ebi shumai as an appetizer. The handrolls are quite delicious and beautiful. We usually get hot saki in the cooler months, and occasionally splurge for cold in the summer. One of the things I like most about Village is the courtyard. Sitting outside with diners from the other restaurants in the square is such a unique experience, especially here in New England where our short summers limit the amount of outdoor dining we can do. Most of the reviews of Village are very positive and I would simply concur with them. I suspect that reviewers who have had bad experiences may have only visited once, and I'm very sorry to hear that anyone has had a bad meal there. In the many times I have eaten there, Village has never "bombed." Once or twice we had "the new girl" who wasn't a star, and once I felt that the fish wasn't as good as it usually was. But, we have dined at this restaurant so many times now that I feel confident in recommending this place with some of my highest praise.

I'm a Village sushi addict. Having worked in Roslindale, I mosey over to village at least once a week to order out their bulgogi or chicken teriyaki lunch box. Service is always prompt and curteous, and the food is always cooked perfectly. And out of the 40-50 times I have ordered, 0 mistakes have been found in my order. Pretty good track record, if you ask me. The dining environment is airy, bright, and quite soothing, never being excessively loud. Take a seat at the sushi bar, and the very friendly staff will greet you with big smiles all around. If you're looking for premium sushi with a wide selection at reasonable prices, head to downtown Roslindale. You may not regret it.

Sushi... Mmm. I frequent Village sushi as often as my wallet allows, and have never been disappointed. The decor is modern and simple, with a sushi bar that spans the length of the restaurant. Wait staff keep a close eye on diners making service fast and efficient. And best of all, the food! For starters, we usually order gyoza and edamame, then move on to miso soup followed by the Village sushi boat. I firmly believe that chef-selected sushi is a must to get the highest quality, most variety, and the best deal! The fish at Village is super fresh and practically melts in your mouth, especially the sake (salmon). Their California rolls are also scrumptious. I haven't yet tried the fancy rolls or the entrees, but I'm not worried- I'll be back very soon!

We love this place! My whole family too. The server was pleasant. We shared don shumai, chicken tempura. We then ordered spicy tuna maki, shocking maki, hearts of fire, tuna kutsai

My husband and I got takeout from Village Sushi. We've eaten there many times before and never had a problem. The sushi was terrible, it tasted fishy and old, the tobiko didn't pop and the eel was mushy. I brought the food back because it was really inedible. I was shocked by the terrible customer service I received. The first thing I told the woman that was helping me that I had eaten there many times and I have never had a problem with the food. I was very pleasant when I told her the problem. I did not get the reception I thought I would. She was so argumentative and proceeded to tell me that no one else had complained and what did I want her to do. I said I wanted my money back. The woman gave me my money and told me not to come back to their restaurant. She said if I had a problem with the food again they would not refund my money. This was by far the worst service I have every received at a restaurant and I've been to hundreds of restaurants in my lifetime. If it were my restaurant I would have bent over backwards to make the customer happy. I want to tell customers NEVER to go to Village Sushi & Grill again. They do not care about their patrons at all. I went to JP Seafood last night. The food was fabulous with wonderful customer service. It is a mile down the road from Village Sushi. I would tell anyone to take the ride down the street and go to JP Seafood instead. There is no comparison. The food and service is 100 times better than Village Sushi.

Another place to add to my "Maki Me Hungry" list! Village sushi located in Roslindale Square. Have been wanting to try this place for a long time and my wish was granted this past Friday. Such a large menu! It took us 15 minutes (mostly me), to read the menu. Note that their special maki rolls, are more like 8-10 pieces. We ordered 5 special maki items for 2 people. Our waitress was impressed we ate all 50 pieces. They have unique rolls that are either topped with tuna, salmon, eel, or wasabi tobiko. Wasabi tobiko?! How cool is that? Green tobiko with a hint of wasabi if you are not a fan of it's original side condiment. I noticed that it took a while to get our rolls, hence seeing other diners staring at the chefs. Definitely try -Volcano Maki (an explosion of scallop, crab, mushroom, avocado, tobiko and spicy majoy) -Idaho Maki (wicked crispy but soft not raw in the middle) -Crazy maki They have outdoor seating in the summer and cute little 2 tops inside. Prices are a little higher than you would imagine since it's in Rozzie but worth the try.

Good sushi at reasonable prices. Don't let the complex Americanized mayonnaise and cream cheese rolls on the menu deter you: they also do very good traditional nigiri sushi here. Noteworthy are some of the special nigiri which are toasted on top with a blowtorch. The "Sushi Lunch" is a good deal and beautifully presented.

  • Cecilia L.

The fish is fresh and well cut, the chefs are friendly and the maki is tightly rolled. Sushi and sashimi combo is beautifully presented with high-quality cuts that included chutoro(!) and tako that was very tender and not rubbery at all. The jazz maki filled with eel and fried sweet potato and topped with tuna is a guilty pleasure. Cilantro in the sunshine roll accents the salmon with a hint of citrusy freshness, while the shocking maki, their take on spicy tuna, will satisfy a tempura crunch craving. We ordered green tea ice cream but got ginger. It was so good, we couldn't stop eating it.

I probably enjoy 2 or 3 meals a week at Village Sushi (more often in the summer time). There hasn't been an experience YET that I've disliked. I typically order the steamed shrimp shumai with 2 maki rolls. My girlfriend will usually order the Udon soup (shrimp or vegetable). The rolls are fresh and delicious and I've never been disappointed. She thoroughly enjoys the soup- (just asked her and she quoted, "ummm...it's really really good...") The service is wonderful (after just asking once the waitress automatically brings low sodium soy sauce and extra ginger with my order). In the summer you can share the backyard with patrons from Sophia's Grotto and Birch Street Bistro (pack patio). There illuminated lights and heaters for the evening hours. Overall, it's a delicious experience.

We're a regular at this sushi restaurant. You can sit here inside or on the inner terrace, shared with other restaurants. The seafood is exceptionally fresh and the service is always very friendly and swift. The sushi and sashimi dishes are very affordable and there is a broad selection. Parking is easiest at the free public parking nearby, which has sufficient space even on the busiest days. I recommend reserving a table on the weekend evenings, otherwise it may be a very long wait (you may be able to sit at the sushi bar). They also have take-out menus.

I walked by this place twice before I realized it was what I was looking for was right in front of me. I brought my boyfriend back because he fell in like with sushi while in NY, but wasn't quite sure this place would be as good as he experienced there. When we walked in, we went to the take-out window. We asked the young lady there a lot of questions, and she was very helpful in assisting us in deciding what we wanted. She told us her preferences, but adjusted when she found out how our tastes lean. I got the Shocking Maki (tuna, spicy mayo, tempura flakes) and avocado maki. He got Sunshine Maki (salmon, lemon, cilantro, cucumber) and a straight tuna maki. We both loved the Shocking and tuna -- beautiful, juicy, red tuna. I'm a sucker for avocado, so fresh avocado sushi made me happy. We were disappointed with the Sunshine - it was too lemony, and buried the fish. I almost took my boyfriend out when I suggested he add a little wasabi. He's not used to the power of it, so we had a comical moment when his mouth was on fire. Almost literally. We will be back, though. All the ingredients were perfectly prepared and so so fresh. I am excited to try other stuff, too -- they have Korean offerings, and I love me some Bibimbop.

Great atmosphere, smelled better than most sushi restaurants and the sushi was very very fresh. A little pricy but great taste. I am so glad that we have a sushi restaurant that we can walk to. Service was a little slow and this is the only reason they do not get 5 stars.

This is my absolute favorite sushi spot! I order from there all the time and the staff is always friendly and accommodating. My favorite dishes are the lobster and spicy tuna maki's. I also love their mango mochi ice-cream.

I tried this place months ago and it was unimpressive at best. Tonight, another attempt because it's close. I want it to be good. First off, if you do take-out be careful because the person answering the phone may not understand what you're ordering It arrives 45 minutes later, lukewarm in a bunch of styrofoam and a plastic bag. Not only is it an environmental nightmare, the miso is cold and bland. We tried some tuna tonight instead of the chicken from months back. The veggies are steamed to neutralize all taste and nutrition. The brown rice we ordered is white. At $40 for two people, this is not value. If you like bland, tasteless, overpriced...go ahead. I'm not willing to go for strike three. Now, since I'm still hungry and out $40, anyone know a decent place to get Asian food in Roslindale/West Roxbury?

Village Sushi is an absolute gem. When we lived in Roslindale we ate here as often as our budget allowed. We make trips back as often as we can. All of the staffers are warm and friendly, the service is great, and the space is inviting, comfortable, and nice to look at. All of the menu offerings are fresh and outstanding. The Ok Dol Bibimbop is one of our all-time favorites- it is a rice and vegetable dish with your choice of beef, chicken, or fish, and is served in a hot stone pot that crisps the rice and keeps the food warm while you eat. The sushi is creative and delicious, and the Sake-tinis made with pearl sake are incredible! In the summer you can choose to sit outdoors in the courtyard that Village Sushi shares with 2 other restaurants: Sophia's Grotto and Birch St Bistro. Highly, highly recommend this place!

Village Sushi is an elegant, simple restaurant with reasonable prices and quality food. I have always liked the classy but casual decor, particularly the large paper umbrellas used as lamp shades; the light is soft, warm, and inviting. In the warmer weather, you can enjoy your meal on the quaint patio out back, which is shared with Sophia's Grotto and Birch Street Bistro. The Vegetarian Maki combo is fantastic; filling, flavorful, and unique. The platter is wonderfully presented, and comes with an assortment of vegetarian sushi including spinach, avo-kyu, and, my personal favorite, the veggie maki. The vegetarian roll is significantly larger than the other pieces, and is stuffed with asparagus, spinach, cucumber, avocado, oskinko (picked Chinese cabbage), and burdock root. The flavor combination is fabulous, and should not be missed. Village Sushi also offers top-notch noodle dishes. If you're going for lunch or dinner with another person, I highly recommend splitting a sushi platter and one of their kitchen entrees. The Yaki Udon or Soba is excellent; I am partial to the Udon because I like the thickness and texture of the noodles, and the way it holds the sauce. The flavor is light and clean, and the vegetables are very fresh and perfectly cooked. Don't forget to round out your meal with a teapot of hot Saki (the large is perfect for two). It's wonderful.

Village Sushi is at least a once a week destination for me and my wife. The Wife is an admitted Godzilla Maki addict. The sushi is as fresh and well prepared as many of the more expensive and highly touted Sushi places in Boston. You are not going to get something super out of the ordinary. What you will get is a great value for your dollar. We have had a couple of misses with some of there other dishes (seafood Jun-gol) and the Japche. The Ok-Dol Bi Bim Bap though is excellent. I prefer the beef, the wife, being a veggie lady, likes the tofu. The rice gets nice and crispy on the bottom and there is just nothing negative about that. Gave it 4 stars because of the few misses and the fact that sometimes the service can be a little flaky (forgetting to bring me another beer, waiting for the table to be cleared and waiting for the check)

Could I interest you in a handwoven scarf? That sentence has no bearing on this restaurant. Perhaps I could have used one, as it got cold when the sun went down when we were here the other day. Fucking thermodynamics, you sly SUMBITCH! Brass tacks. A quality sushi restaurant in Roslindale Village. We finally got to eat out in the courtyard, which they share with Sophia's Grotto and Birch St. Bistro. It was was actually really nice. It was an interesting culinary cluster-fuck of the senses of Italian-cooking smells of garlic, etc, mixed with Mexican music, then the taste of raw fish, wasabi and soy sauce. Honestly, it was a lot BETTER than I just made it out to sound! Anyway, the service and food were great. Everything was well prepared and came out very promptly. The server was extra-helpful and very honest about all of the items on the menu. FYI, this place does do take-out. I haven't tried that yet, mainly because I like the whole "experience" thing. But I'm a outrightly pompous fuck about sushi, anyhow.

Went here about a month ago on a whim. Soooo good. We got the wasabi shumai appetizer! Yowza!!! Spicy, soooo yummy. Will burn the hair from your nose. Then my boyfriend and I got a ton of sushi and then ordered some more. I had wine and I think he had some beer. It was funny, there were a ton of "regulars" sitting at the sushi bar. They were all chatting with the chefs. I would love to go back and sit at the sushi bar. Really a great little place. Can't wait to go back...or get some take out :) Price range below...well, depends on how much you eat. My boyfriend and I can easily spend 80 bucks in there just trying all the different types of sushi. So, it really depends on what you get and how much.

I am sad to say that I only recently discovered Village Sushi! I have lived in Roslindale on and off for years but stayed away from most of the restaurants in the area. Since my first visit I have been to Village Sushi several times. Each time I have found the staff friendly and efficient, the food lovely and fresh, and the restaurant itself clean and welcoming. I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the area looking for reasonably priced quality sushi & Japanese food.

Absolutely love this neighborhood restaurant! Every time we go we always order the Mango Tango Maki with soy paper and the Vegetable Pad Thai. Both dishes are out of this world! One of my friends isn't crazy for raw sushi so these two plates are right up her alley! Really friendly service and great spot to sit outside on a nice evening.

The good, the bad, and the oh so ugly... Good- Nice, attractive presentation, nice server Bad- we waited over an hour between our appetizer and our sushi. The table next to us who came in half way through our wait got served their entire meal before us. When their entree was brought we got a "Your food will be right out" from our waitress. I do not care if our food is forgotten, mistakes happen, but be honest about it and try and make up for it. Ugly-the food and the cleanliness. The sushi was just not very good. It was chewy and the nori was tough. I should not have to spend a good 15 chews to get down one bite. Our fried oyster appetizer was only 4 little oysters that were crunchy on the outside and freezing cold in the middle. Clearly taken straight from the freezer to the fryer. The walls had so much crap visibly stuck to them I could see it across the room. I am bummed to have disliked this restaurant so much. I have had better sushi from Market Basket.

I will go ahead and boldly state that this is the best sushi you can get in the greater Boston area. I've tried many and they just don't compare to almost any sushi places in Seattle (where I moved here from), nor do any of them even come close to comparing to Village Sushi. If you don't live around Roslindale Village, it's worth the trek if you really enjoy good sushi. Though somewhat pricey, the Chef's choice sushi boat is a great way to get the real "feel" of what Village Sushi has to offer and the Jazz Maki is a delectable work of art! Mmm... now I want sushi!

  • Brad H.

This is the best sushi you'll get for your money in Boston. It's basically Fugakyu grade sushi for half price. We use to live in Brookline and go to Fugakyu about once a month. Now that we live in Rozzie, we can WALK to Village Sushi and can afford to go there quite often. Maybe the best part about it is that not a lot of people know about it - especially the outdoor patio seating in the summer. If more Bostonians knew about this amazing dining experience, then I'd never get a table! Rolls to check out when you go: Jazz, Karate, Sunshine and definitely have some of their Nigiri - the fish is really fresh!

Food is 4 star quality, but if you think about how affordable this place is, it definitely deserves 5 stars. It's owned by the same people as Sushi 55 in Newton, which just opened up. People are friendly, and food is consistently great. My favorite is Coast to Coast which is a combination of California Maki, Boston Maki, and New York Maki all for $13. Love their stone-pot bibimbabs too. Not a fan of their noodles, though. I'm a regular at this restaurant. Good ambience for a family eating, friends get together, or date - works for all three!

I am not really a fan seafood period but I went to this place with a few co-workers only because they had alternatives to fish. the place is pretty nice looking and it looks a whole lot larger from the outside. they have 2 chefs, 1 person on the register and one waiting tables. the food was pretty good. my only issue was it was pretty busy during lunch and with 1 waitress it felt like the poor girl was running around like a chicken with her head cut off. i felt like the lady behind the register could of came out and helped more. overall it was a pretty good experience. I may come back with my wife one night.

Horrible service. Waited 10 minutes to order. 10 more for drinks and then an hour for food! Food is fine (reason it got 2 stars) but not worth it. I would expect someone to come over and explain that there was a mix up or for them to take something off the bill, but they didn't.

Anyplace you can get fresh sushi made for five bucks is my kinda place. Loved their california Maki it was so good. Their seafood stir fry was also very good. I wasn't a fan of the miso soup but it was all round pretty good food.

Solidly good sushi - and a GREAT selection. One of the best selections I've seen in the Boston area. Their "saki-tinis" are deceptively strong but delicious. I've only been once, and I don't live near enough for take out, but I'd definitely come back. And their service was excellent - so take the negative reviews about this place with a grain of salt.

I too am a village sushi addict. I order from here at least 1 to 2 times a week. The tuna katsu maki, sunshine maki, hearts on fire are some of my favorites. I normally have the food delivered and they arrive always in 30-45 minutes. I've never had a bad experience and the staff is incrediblely efficient and fast. This is definitely a hidden jewel in roslindale! It far surpasses those expensive sushi joints downtown that charge you an arm and a leg for small rolls and so-so sushi.

Local roles are a cute touch and also are my favorites :)

Village Sushi and Grill is a great local spot that I'd classify as just below Ginza/New Ginza (which is just below Fugakyu, which is just below Oishii), but just as good as or better than any other sushi joint you're likely to find in the area (including Cayuga, J.P. Seafood Cafe, etc.). The "Sexy Maki" has a silly name, but is amazing - it's the only roll I've had that uses "soybean paper" instead of nori. Has a mix of eel, spicy tuna, and veggies inside. It's a must-buy; I get at least two every time I go. Their Spicy Tuna Maki is the (inferior) marinated kind - but if you ask for the "Shocking Maki" (another silly name), you get the real thing (tuna mixed in with spicy mayo and fried tempura bits). In the three years I've lived here, it seems like their nigiri portions have gotten bigger, and the fish has gotten fresher and of consistently high quality. If only we could get them to put Waketake on the sake menu, we'd be all set!

Now, I heard a rumor that this place is owned by the same ladies that own JP Seafood in, yeah, JP. After giving Village Sushi three shots . . .I find that rumor hard to believe. The menus are almost exactly the same in offerings, appearence, and price. So why do I have my doubts? Because while we love JP Seafood, the food was pretty disappointing the first couple of times we went to Village. The salmon wasn't 'awful' but it was bad the first two times and, in my experience at least, its hard to get bad salmon sushi. The rest of our order wasn't up to par either. So, on the third trip (hey, its close and its sushi, we really wanted this to work out) we were impressed because everything we ordered was incredibly delicious -- both the texture and taste were spot on. Unfortunetly, that night our waitress was one of those crappy attitude types that you hope keeps ignoring your need for water because every time she comes in proximity she kills the mood at the table until a few seconds after she goes away. Three strikes and your out for a real long time (sure I'll go back in a few years if it's still around). I say, if you are looking for a good restaurant in Roslindale Village, there are many to choose from, all around but not including Village Sushi. If you are looking for great sushi in the Roslindale Village area, then its worth the trip up Washington/South St. to Jamaica Plain and go to the more appealing sister . . .JP Seafood, which I've been too probably 30 times and I've always had great service, almost always delicious sushi, and enjoyed the eclectic and interesting atmoshpere and crowd.

Always a good experience, eating at the restaurant or ordering for delivery. Sushi is always fresh, they have a wide variety of maki specials, saki cocktails are tasty and unique, appetizers and salads are yummy, and delivery is usually on time or earlier than they tell you. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere, is in a cute part of Roslindale and we typically haven't had to wait long for a table.

To some people, this restaurant probably represents the yuppification of Roslindale. To me, it represents a variety of food that I want to enjoy in my neighborhood. So if that makes me a "yup", kiss my ass. Village Sushi's simple decor, good service and very fresh sushi keep us coming back. There's a nice patio in back for outdoor dining. This is the sister restaurant to JP Seafood, which I've never been to, because I don't need to go there. They also serve hot food, including Korean specialties (bibimbop, etc.), which can be a good choice on a cold winter night. I like the Sunshine roll, spicy tuna roll and the Everyone's Favorite Maki Combo. The seaweed salad is yummy too.

I got takeout from here two weeks ago. I have been eating Pad Thai for 15 years, and unfortunately this was by far the worst I have ever had. I literally had to throw it out a few bites in. I was very disappointed. My boyfriend ordered chicken with vegetables, which was pretty good and the Miso Soup was good too. If I ever try it again I will definitely stick to the sushi menu and stay far, far away from the pad thai.

Delicious! I've tried it 3 times so far, twice we ate in and once I had it delivered to West Roxbury (delivery was a big plus). Service was great all three times. The sushi is excellent, it's really fresh and has a lot of interesting types of maki on the menu. It's very difficult to decide what to get! It's small but very cute. In the summer they have patio seating in the back. Try one of the sakitinis. They are great!

Love this place - I'm pretty sure I'm putting the owner's children through college since I eat there, um, occasionally several times a week. Don't judge. It's delicious. The service can be a little slow when you eat in, but everyone is always friendly and the food is always great. During the warmer months, the patio out back is a special treat.

I've only had the stir frys and have not tried the sushi yet. I think the food is fresh and good, just a litte too expensive for a stir fry dish.

Im new to city life so maybe Im over-reacting but sushi delivered to my door at 9:30pm is pretty much the greatest thing ever. A great selection and even better prices, my girlfriend and I had no problem getting to the 20$ minimum order for delivery. I cant wait to actually step foot inside and try the rest of the menu!

I've actually never been there for dinner, but their lunch box special for lunch is awesome. You can get tempura or catch of the day with sushi, rice, potato thingies, and something else I can't remember for about $8. Tempura is so so good. Their bubble tea is good and I have never had a problem with service. Can't comment on the alcohol.

Best sushi I've had around here. Vegetarian combo is great. Fish is always fresh. Gyoza is great. Haven't had a bad thing yet and I get take out at least every other week.

Gary would have never guessed that he'd find such tight sushi in Roslindale. Gary never thought he'd find much of anything in Roslindale, but Village Sushi set this Roslindale-hater straight. Yes, Gary was accosted by some screaming clientele in the foyer and yes Gary had to listen to said screamer scream at his wife through dinner and yes this man caused such a stir that the waitress became flustered and service suffered, but Village Sushi put out a tight party boat of delicious and fresh sushi. There was bomb seaweed salad and mochi to boot. Unlike Jae's, Village Sushi did not sink Gary's party boat. All aboard for tight sushi! P.S. Gary makes it a point to never mention the crazy world of humanity he encounters when out gathering info for his tight reviews and you've got to trust him when he tells you that some tight tales of crazy diners have been omitted from these tight reviews. However, screaming Village Sushi man was too hot to handle. Beware. the sushi was so tight, he might become a regular.

great local sushi. Has the great Mango Tango like its sister restaurant JP Seafood. I love the double double maki!! Only downside is closed on Mondays. They deliver too which is a huge bonus!! Price is about average as far as sushi goes.

I have never ever eaten fish (not even tuna fish sandwich or a fish stick lol) until I was 22 years old. Village Sushi was my first and I really enjoyed it. I've been there about 10 times and I dont dine in, I usually take it home. But the selection is good, prices are ok and the employees are nice. My whole family loves it.

Great spot in Roslindale Sq. for fresh sushi/sashimi. I eat there about once a month or so and the food is excellent about 85% of the time. The service is generally excellent although a few times I have experienced overly shy/awkward servers but never rude/indifferent servers.

My absolute favorite Sushi bar in Boston. Keep Fugaku on Beacon street for the Touristy-College transplants... this place is amazing. Great selection, fresh as fresh can be! The service is friendly and knowlegeable. Since I discovered it, my friends' Bi-weekly Sushi nights are always, always at this place.

Consistently great! They have some of the Sake I've had! During the summer they have some outdoor tables which are great. A downer to the patio is that it's shared with an unrelated restaurant near by. Servers are always cheerful and attentive. --- give the fried ice cream a try!

Village Sushi is an amazing place for dinner. It is hardly ever busy and the staff is particularly friendly and attentive. I recommend the delicious seafood salad and beef stone hot pot dish. We've tried a wide variety of their specialty makis and are always amazed. Almost nothing is more refreshing than a glass or two of Choya plum wine. They even let us take home the neat bottle!

The fish is always very fresh, and the prices are reasonable- but the wait during the lunch hour can be painfully slow!
