This fantastic greasy spoon used to be open from 3AM to 11AM. I would stumble in there at the crack of dawn after a long night and get the "break the house" special, comprised of pancakes, hash browns, 3 eggs, your choice of meat, coffee and juice. All this for, if my memory serves me right, for $5.99. Those were the good ole days! No wonder I packed on a cool 50lbs in just a couple years. For all I know the good ole days are still rockin', however, I haven't made it back in years. Not that I dont miss Derna. The whole joint is run by one old Greek dude who is constantly bouncing between the grill and serving the customers! He is an absolute riot, to boot. He actually used to chastize you when you came in for being gone for so long. He expects you to come back for breakfast EVERY MORNING! What a character! Anyhow, this place is completely unique. They even have those weird 70's coffee cups that are a reusable brown plastic housing for disposable cone cups. WOW! Plus, the lunch counter is this really cool "U" shape. Between that, the neon, Derna, the regulars and the prices, you might just feel like Michael J. Fox trying to order a TAB in back to the future!

Great breakfast spot next to the train. Good place to keep out of the cold and have a delish breakfast.

I don't get this place. I went in on a Saturday morning. There was one guy behind the counter cooking. I looked at him. He cooked. He walked out. He served someone at the counter. He did not look at me. He went back behind the counter. He did not ask me if I wanted a cup of coffee. He did not come over to take my order. I sat there for about six minutes waiting, trying to catch his eye. It became a game. Would he look at me? He glanced in my direction. No acknowledgement. The place was not crowded. I left after about ten minutes. Weird. Maybe he only serves people he knows. Maybe he has a quota. "After five people I give up". Who knows. (I am not a small or invisible person).

We strolled in one Saturday around closing time and were greeted with a chilly reception. We weren't aware of the closing time. We were new to the area but the food was delicious and most of all as someone who doesn't often get her potatoes fried as crispy as I'd like, these were the perferct combination of crunch, flavor and softness. We've been back since. We are avid breakfast eaters so this is the perfect place for us and the price is right.

I'd never been to Derna's before yesterday. It reportedly had it's interior recently redone to emulate a 1950s style diner. It looks alright, almost like if you bought a "diner set" at Target or something. The cook was a nice man, but the food was terrible. Terrible. I ordered a burger ($5.95). It had clearly been frozen immediately before being put on the skillet, and had those weird hard chunks in it that sometimes accompany cheap, crappy burgers. Fries didn't come with it, and they were an extra few dollars. My burger, fries, and a can of soda came out to 11 dollars and change. That's as much as a lot of bars charge. James's Gate down the street is a few bucks more and has fresh, naturally raised burgers. It sucks to get crappy food. It sucks more to pay good food prices for crappy food. The people I was with got a tuna sandwich and a BLT respectively. They didn't hate theirs, but it was store bought white bread with tuna/bacon lettuce and tomato. Those sandwiches were $6.50 or so. I want this place to be good, but it's not and it's really expensive. I mean jeez, a breakfast sandwich was $6! Even Fornax doesn't charge that, and they make their own English muffins!

Stopped in for breakfast and couldn't believe the prices. The lunch menu had decent prices but the breakfast was way to expensive. I had a bacon egg and cheese sandwich. It was tasty but not best quality, It was served on white toast. No other options available and cost $5.50, Also had a side order of home fries which were ok. All in all this place was meh. And the owner/cook/waitstaff was just so cranky. Would it hurt to smile? And i cant stand the old school cash only policy. Im not going back. So many other breakfast spots in the area.

I went in today with a friend for what was a long-awaited breakfast. Well, the prices were rather astounding. The food tasted like it had been made at 5am and recooked and my friend's coke had expired, but chose not to say anything, in fear of what might happen next. There were two girls across from us, and one had abruptly excused herself (to vomit) and was puzzled because I don't believe Derna's doesn't even have a restroom? WHAT? How is this place still open? After we left, my stomach felt rather unsettled and we had wished we had just went to Sugar instead. If you want a good breakfast - go elsewhere.

The food is good but the guy was a jerk and service was slow b/c he cooks and serves the food...not going back! there are plenty of other breakfast spots that are relaxed and fun. This guy needs to chill.

Don't mind the cranky guy (the owner) behind the counter. If you want a good honest breakfast, cheap, Derna's is the place. Do not even think of bringing in a Dunks coffee if you want to keep your head. But do order the big breakfast.
