Barry's Village Deli has been in business since 1970, providing the area with all kinds of delicious deil-inspired food including sandwiches piled high as well matzo soup, knishes, blintzes, pancakes, lox and many, many more things. From half sour pickles and grapenut custard, to creamed herring and latkas, their offerings are extensive and you'll be able to enjoy them on the spot or to-go. The place has history and it feels like it upon walking in. Many people's bubbis have probably been there and sitting there for a meal makes you feel like you're a part of something bigger something with history, and I've only had good experiences there on my few trips there. I've had many things there including the blintzes which were pretty tasty as well as their corned beef sandwhiches which I love. I've also enjoyed some of their pickles, their baked goods (their chocolate rugelachs are awesome) and I hope to one day order and devour the famous "Artie's Ultimate Fresser" which features turkey, roast beef, corned beef, swiss cheese, onion, coleslaw, Russian dressing and mustard ($16.99). Everything on the menu is under $20 and their service is great, both behind the deli counter as well as in the dining room. Parking on the street is easy to find and you can also access it via the green line (the Waban T stop is like.. 20 yards away? 30 yards?) So whether you're with your bubbi, with friends or with your family, you should definitely swing by this place if you're looking for a deli fix. I personally like it way better than Zaftigs and it's a lot easier to get to and park there than if you were to go to Michael's Deli in Brookline. Fress away!

I avoid eating here like the plague because basically they are a bunch of over-hyped "ganifs". But it's Sunday and nothing else around was open. I bought my kid a tuna on rye that had only tuna in the front--just enough to make it look like it was a stuffed sandwich. Three-quarters of the bread had no tuna on top of it--as if it were a prop in a TV food commercial--good looks, no filling! When I returned the half not eaten to the counter the girl working at the sandwich counter said "if you don't like it then don't eat here." That's the best food advice I've received in a long time! Take their own employee's advice: DO NOT EAT HERE, IT IS AN ENORMOUS RIP-OFF!!

Barry's has gone way downhill. They made my sandwich wrong and when I pointed it out the manager said, "that's not the worst thing to happen" and then begrudgingly fixed it. The sandwich was terrible either way. Surly wait staff. Don't go there.

A little pricey, but fresh, quality, and delicious. Ambience for eat-in breakfast is meh. Solid take-out sandwiches - you not be hungry or disappointed afterward. When you need a banging Racheal or reuben experience in your mouth, this place will bring the pain.

We have been going here for years but the quality now has definitely gone way downhill. Got our food for the Jewish holiday and it was just awful UGH!! There was nothing good about it. The potato kugel tasted like it was from a mix it was bland and tasteless for $9.99 The brisket $19.00 was tough and bland. It also is one of the last few places on the planet where they do not give you a receipt. We will not be going back for anything except they do still have good corned beef but stay away from anything that they prepare its awful.

Delicious prepared food. Blueberry muffins are the best...loaded with blueberries. Service is very friendly and I always love everything from take out case.

The food is good to say the least, however their customer service leaves a bit to be desired. We invited my handicapped in-laws to lunch today, drove 30 minutes and were turned away by the arrogant help and owner as they would not seat us. We checked their website before inviting the in-laws and saw that it required us to be there by 2:15 PM As the restaurant closes at 3 PM. We arrived at 2:10 PM only to be turned away. We advise them we checked their website and they said well it's not always up-to-date. they said the grill is off sorry. You would think when four people come in +2 people after us they would change their mind being that it was 45 minutes prior to closing. So my recommendation is if your planning to go there, you best call and make sure they don't have other plans for closing the restaurant before the posted and advertised hours.

Great deli with a delicious breakfast menu and amazing bagels, check out the combo 2 sandwich w potato salad

This is my favorite neighborhood gem. We love the bagels and lox. And especially the lean pastrami and corned beef sandwiches on bulkie rolls. It's hard to find good deli around our neighborhood. There Kugel is delicious my kids eat it up for dinner. Also the matzoh ball soup is excellent I always keep some in my freezer. The ambience is not that attractive but it's good to stop in for lunch every now and then. Usually I do take-out.

The last few times I've been here I've felt that the food was overpriced for the quality. This week I had the egg salad and multiple bites had egg shell in it: unacceptable.

I wish I could do half stars - because my rating is actually 3.5 Good breakfast, with some out-of-the-ordinary choices. Husband had the salmon lox egg & onion scramble and said it was really good. I had scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, and sliced tomato. It was fairly standard, with not the best scrambled eggs but good sausage patties & the sliced tomatoes were a nice addition/touch. The portions were quite large. The service was very friendly, nice, and prompt. And the coffee was decent. I definitely want to return for their amazing-looking lunch sandwiches sometime.

A great place to stop in if your in the area. There aren't many quality old school delis anymore and walking in here made me feel that deli love and comfort. We got in before the lunch rush and was seated by a lovely waitress who took good care of us. I split the Rachael with my mom ( don't think I could have eaten the whole sandwich on my own) it was that perfect warm toasty cheesy and a little fat greasy you need in this classic sandwich. We got a side of potato salad ( a little sweet) and the coleslaw( nice crunch) and perfect half sour pickle. My moms husband had a 1/2 pastrami that he loved! The drinks are bottle and they carry dr. Browns as well. I read other reviews that seemed a tad constructively negative but the only negative thing for me is I wanted to try it all!!

This review is for the sit-down experience only. Their Reuben is phenomenal, albeit a little bit expensive. I'm a big fan of the way the cheese melts and forms little crispies along the side of the sandwich. I would be willing to go back and try other sandwiches, but I'll probably just order the Reuben again.

The food at Barry's is very good, but the service is amongst the worst in America. Orders are ignored, choices are ignored, sizes are ignored, and required cooking is also ignored. This is because no effort is made to train waitstaff. If you question why this is happening in a place that has good food, you are told that they have plenty of business and they don't need you.

  • George B.

Very tasty sandwich but small and way too expensive. I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 if I could. Lamberts is a much better value!!!! Also, the waban market with Yan and Irina is awesome and right around the corner.

  • Zack D.

TERRIBLE!!!! The prices here are outrageous! We paid $30 for only two small roast beef sandwiches. the sandwiches were made poorley as well with minimal amount of meat, I took a bite of coldlsaw and immediately had to spit it out in disgust. The older gentleman behind the counter along with most of the staff were extremely unfriendly. It reminded me of the "Soup Nazi" episode from Seinfeld (without the quality of food though) I wouldn't even mind paying that much if the food was that good but everything from the cost - the staff- and the food were very disappointing and I will not be returning. Judging by some past reviews I am not the only one who feels this way BOTTOM LINE.....DON'T EAT HERE

Four simple sandwiches took well over 20 minutes to prepare. While waiting for my order with my Family, I witnessed many customers (who arrived after me), place their orders, receive their sandwiches, and go on their way. The employees are clearly mis-managed (servers sitting and chatting with one another and not paying attention to hot food sitting on the counter), and have no real knowledge of the menu (unable to correctly construct sandwiches). The prices are ridiculously high for the quality of product you receive. Finally I got my order and headed home, only to find that my Dad's sandwich had nothing but turkey and roast beef on dry marbled rye (missing all condiments, cheese, and coleslaw). So for $15 my Dad received some meat sandwiched between two dry, stale pieces of bread. My advice? Never visit this establishment, there are plenty of better ones around town.

Excellent food, excellent service, great sandwiches and pickles. Yum! When I visit home we always stop here before our long trip home for a packed lunch and some breakfast. Plus they have belly lox which is hard to find.

They close at 3:00 on Sunday. At 2:30 my wife and I walked in to eat. The deli guy said, we closed the dining area, we close at 3. What asses. So we went next door to the Russian market, and ordered take out tongue and chicken wings. Their attitude at Barry's sucks. Or at least The person that wouldn't seat us sucks. I know the food is good here , but such indifference. So I'm giving them a two stars based on attitude. Sure they opened at 6:00 a.m. But that's not my problem.

Three corned beef sandwiches on marble rye to go came to $37.00 and the bread was so hard and stale that not one of us ate it!!

Yes, this place has very bad customer service (most of the time they make you feel like they are doing you a favor). Yes, it's expensive (get ready to pay $12-13 for a sandwich). But it's SO GOOD!!!!!!!!! Sandwiches are packed with meat, they are so huge, I normally eat just half and leave the other half for later (and I swear, 2nd half tastes even better 2-3 hours later). We normally get "pick 3-meat combo" and add sauerkraut for it, so it works out to be over $17 per sandwich ... is it worth it? YEAH!!! it's not your every-day-lunch-deli, it's definitely a pricey-treat-once-in-a-while type of place. If anyone knows a place that just as good but cheaper, please let me know ASAP!!! If they order towards the end of the day, they might be out of some bread or meat, so have some alternatives in mind. Cole slaw and pickle are yummy too. We had sit down breakfast there ones. Potato latkes were pretty blah, and the place itself is just not made to be a nice sit-down eatery. So now we just pick up their amazing sandwiches as a treat once in while. Yum.

I recently went into this asylum for the first time in about 3 years (and only because the supermarket next door had run out of seeded rye bread) and they certainly haven't improved since my last visit. (In fact, I think the servers have become even more deranged over the years, if that is even possible.) I asked one of the old guys behind the counter if they had any seeded rye bread and he held up a loaf and told me that it was $4.99. I reached out my hand to take it and the guy actually wouldn't let go of it, and then proceeded to pull it out of my hand! (I'm serious!) When I asked him to give me the bread, he told me that, according to the Board of Health, I couldn't touch the bread unless I bought it first! (The bread, btw, was in a standard plastic wrapper with a twist tie.) Needless to say, I walked out without the bread and can only hope, for the sake of anyone else who is foolish enough to shop here, that the men in the white coats will come and throw a butterfly net over this guy, sooner rather than later... Memo to Barry's Village Deli employees: Seek help. You most assuredly need it.

I write this for the bakery goods only, as I've never been able to get past that part of the counter. I spend all my cash on their rugelach (pastries) - it's the best I've ever had. I would drive 20 minutes for these, esp. the cinnamon sugar.

I stopped here earlier this week on my way up to Waltham. I got a Pilgrim and a number 2 corned beef/pastrami specialty that I asked to be cold. I also got the potato salad and coleslaw. The quality of the sandwiches were very good, as were the sides. I actually loved the potato salad, something I rarely like anywhere. Very good flavor. The negatives--Outrageous prices for these 2 sandwiches. I paid $27 for 2 sandwiches with tax. yowsa!! Keep in mind I frequent jewish delis fairly often and that is so not the average price. it is more like $8-10 for these exact same sandwiches, same size as well, with a side. $12 and $13 is insulting to anyone who is familiar with this type of restaurant. I will be going up to Waltham occasionally for work the next few months and there is another good jewish deli that serves the exact same sandwiches for $8.50 that is on my way so I don't feel the need to pay the outrageous prices here. And why is a knish $5 here when it is half or less than half that everywhere else?? Also, the service was not friendly. No smiles, no hi, no how are you, no thank you, no goodbye. A big group of miserable people was the vibe given off and the guy I talked to was blatantly rude, talking to a friend of his over the counter instead of saying thank you or goodbye or anything at all once he gave me my food.

Located in Waban Square an easy walk from the T station, Barry's a nice little deli with a sitting area available for those who wish to eat in. They have cellphone block inside though, so if you want to contact someone with a question about their order, you'll have to head outside to do so. Sandwiches have a Barry size option of double the meat for a $4 charge (depending on the meat... double the tongue is $6, and it is $5 extra for another kind of meat... was it brisket?), and they each come with your choice of cole slaw or potato salad and a wrapped pickle sliced in half. The potato chip option is no longer, due to some sort of recent change in health policies... yeah, I don't get it either... The sandwiches were freshly constructed to order, sliced in half, and wrapped to go. We also ordered sweet potato fries and onion rings for $3.79 each, which came hot as a decent portion in styrofoam containers with ketchup packets tossed in. The fries were crispy but could be naturally sweeter, while the onion rings were pretty good versions. While my reigning favorite purchased potato salad continues to be Sam LaGrassa's in Downtown Boston, this was still a good creamy version, while the cole slaw was a drier vinegary sort - good, but I prefer KFC's creamy shredded sort. Portioned out in those little plastic cups, they looked rather small at first, but were actually perhaps a quarter cup apiece... The tongue was basic (just lots of thinly sliced tongue between the bread) but really tender and good. The Pilgrim was pretty good too, although I personally would had preferred a thicker layer of cranberry sauce. Actually, everything I had was pretty good, although I wouldn't call them the best, and sandwiches were pretty expensive at $8.99-$13.99 for the basic size.

I waited 30 minutes in line when there were only 2 people in front of me. Excuse me, 1 person in line, but another lady came in and they served her first. This was for bagels to go, for which everything has already been prepared-- all they have to do is place the items in containers and call it a day. Not only is the service ASTONISHINGLY slow, the cost is outrageous. 6 bagels (limited selection of Finagle's passable but not superb bagels), 1/2 lb. whitefish salad, 1/2 lb. plain cream cheese, and 1/4 lb. sliced lox for $30. Insane. The whitefish alone was $24 per lb and the cream cheese somehow costs about $12 per lb. 2 stars because the food is not terrible and the availability of edible bagels in the entire Boston area is meager. If you're feeling up to paying a lot and waiting a lot, come on over here.

I like Barry's corned beef more than I like the one I get at Rein's in Vernon, CT. I have never had a problem with service here. Just a great corned beef sandwich.

Pretty atrocious customer service, but whatever. It didn't really bother me that much. I'll knock off one star for it. Chicken salad was really good and had just the right amount of flavor. They loaded it on my sandwich with fresh veggies and gave me a delicious pickle and coleslaw to go with it. Not much to complain about.

What a dump. I've never encountered such rudeness in all my life. The buxom woman who saunters around is horrible, nosing into everyone's affairs. Who does she think she is? My friends and I were trying to have a nice lunch and she kept interrupting our meal. Sweetheart go away, this is a deli not the Capitol Grill. Instead of trying to play hostess maybe pick up a broom? And a little less perfume too please.

awesome deli. I think i got the combo #2 and it was tasty and heaping with meat. we decided to dine in and it was memorable. our waiter was funny and personable. he had great recomendations and he was super nice.

I agree with Gabe who stated " great Reuben's" . They also have wonderful meat dumplings and potato latkes. Yes, this is a traditional deli style meaning rich meats, greasy foods with full flavor. No diet substitutions made here or updated recipes to make things more "healthy" or "low fat". This is full on old style cooking, but with that stated, the flavors are wonderful and reminiscent of grandmas good old fashioned cooking.

Now this is deli breakfast!! Corned beef hash with no potatoes (but small carrots). Whitefish salad to die for. Onion in the whitefish salad but large enough pieces to pick them out (leaving a hint of the flavor). Good coffee. Cute sweet waitress (twins!). The deli case at the entrance caught our eye... We are stopping on the way out for some take home to continue the experience. Not cheap but ok value. Post script... took home some Nova (for New Year's Day brunch), house roasted turkey (tonight's dinner) and potato salad. More onions in the potato salad but good. The ruggelah was yummy buttery and delicious.

Jewish food heaven. Barry's makes the BEST Ruben ever. The perfect amount of corned beef... Swiss fried on the sides...perfect Russian dressing and simply amazing bread. The potato salad is so delicious. I asked for a green tomato on the side and the friendly waitress accommodated me. Very, very yummy. Great service and a simple, Jewish deli. So good. Worth the drive from anywhere.

Went here for breakfast last weekend for the first time in a few years. I have no idea what all the bad reviews are about. The food is awesome! I got a corned beef hash omelette with a side of toast and home fries, and a coffee. It was one of the best omelette's I've had, made with homemade hash and real eggs. The home fries were fried in some sort of bacon grease, which is obviously unhealthy, but very delicious. My meal ended up costing about $14 with tax, but for the portion and quality it was reasonable. The waitresses were very nice, attentive, and brought everything out quickly. This is definitely a no frills place, but I don't need fancy decor when I'm looking for great breakfast food.

This is the best deli in the Boston area. The #2 (pastrami, corned beef, melted cheese, cole slaw, and Russian dressing) is the best thing on the menu. It is expensive but the portions are huge and it is well worth it. I highly recommend this place. You will not be disappointed.

It always helps to go back to a restaurant that is not as good as it was.I have to say I have bought deli here for over 35 years ,so I know when things are getting better or worse .Today I was craving a corned beef sandwich ,so went into Barry's for lunch .The sandwich came out on an egg role a good amount of corned beef but not a lot .The price if I can remember was $10.95 about average ,however I can now joyfully recommend Barry's for outstanding corned beef .It's not Carnegie but as far as Boston is concerned it was tops .I asked the waitress if this was branded corned beef ,she said no they they boil it from scratch so it's home made .just what I wanted to hear not boars head etc. The corned beef was tender, tasty and best of all fresh .I am now looking at Barry's with a new respect ,and am sure that the pastrami & brisket probably is also great. So why 4 stars ,because when I last ate their chopped liver it was bad ,a couple of years ago .It might have improved since then ,so will check it out soon ,because chopped liver is my favorite deli food ,and if they fixed it since my earlier review I'm prepared to give them 5 stars .I should add Barry's has become a breakfast hangout for a group of around 10 ,their breakfast is quite good, great cream cheese and eggs ,good specials .I think after my fiasco at Zaftigs I will be coming here more often. 12/23/2012 Back to Barry's for cream cheese and corned beef .I asked the counterman if I could taste their chopped liver ,he said ok but remember it's beef liver ughhh. A guy behind me said ,go next door to the Waban Market they have chopped chicken .So I did, very smooth but wished there was some egg in it .Anyway still looking for the ultimate . 1/3/2013 I'm starting to buy Waban Markets (on Windsor Rd ,Waban) chopped liver ,which is quite good ,in fact as I look around they seem to have lots of real deli and Russian gourmet food to.It's an unusual market unlike any convenient store, you will find stuff that you wont find anywhere ,and their chopped liver is only $4.99 a pound a bargain also made with chicken livers ,A MUST .

Takeout has always been 4 star --great matzah ball soup & challah, brisket. So we took my in laws for a sit down breakfast. Big disappointment! Had to wait 15 min for coffee to be brewed and then had to remind waitress we were waiting for it. She came back multiple times to inform us they were out of various bagel favors. Forgot the tomato on my order. Side order of fruit was definitely canned. And they only had 2 more portions left. Not worth it I'm afraid.

Barry's deli rocks!!! It is the quintessential Jewish deli. From smoked fish, to corned beef to hot pastrami, to pickles, to already prepared food section -i was in heaven. With a small dining room with waitress service along with a take out counter this place has loads of options for a tiny deli. With my office now situated in the Wellesly business park inconveniently located (can't go east! ) on route 9, the options for lunch have- to say the least.... diminished. Enter Barry's deli, my savior. Within a 5 minute ride of my office, Barry's deli is putting out food, my entire family would approve of. Having living in Coolidge Corner for years, this place begs the comparison to Michael's deli. Both of which are awesome, but lets face it Barry's is now around the corner from my office, no longer will i need to schlep to Coolidge Corner to get that hot pastrami that I crave.

Normally, I wouldn't write a review of a place I haven't eaten, but twice now we've arrived when they said they were open, and then have them refuse to come to the door. Maybe the food's good, but the people are definitely rude.

Growing up near New York City in my formative years gave me a inherent desire for good deli. So for many years I have been searching for a place that had all the factors that made a good place to get some yummy cured meats. Many friends had told me that I needed to get to Barry's & I would be hooked. So after a few years of hype I finally entered the doors to be meet by a good looking row of cold salads & my heart grew fold of the classic deli look. Now this is where it went wrong. I waited over 10 minutes to be waited on. Mind you it was after the lunch rush. The waitress repeatedly exited the kitchen and never said excuse me. Then when I finally got to give my order the phonier rang. Even though there were 4 guys behind the counter I had to wait for the only one who could write orders to finish with a call from a party of 20. Finally I got to order & I craved the tongue special. Not once was I asked what kind of bread or toppings I wanted. This almost made me want to walk out. Now I say the price of this sandwich special before I ordered it but I believed it would be enough for another meal. Boy was I wrong... The sandwich was tiny by deli standards which included a mini cole slaw and a limpy pickle. I always feel that if I slender over $10 for a sandwich I should at least be satisfied, but no I was still hungry. It was a tasty sandwich don't get me wrong but it was nothing that I would crave. Add that to the long wait, highway robbery prices and the rude staff Barry's did not live up to any expectations. I will give them a few more tries and update my reviews but as of right now I am not impressed.

A quick update on my review. Came here again recently for late breakfast on a weekend. The food is still great, the service still friendly, the corned beef hash is still delicious :)

So overpriced, it's not even funny. You want people to pay how much for a chopped liver sandwich?! It might be good but it's not THAT good. Just because they're the only deli in the square does NOT make them the best.

  • Eric B.

I have been coming here for a couple of years when the craving for a knish or some good cabbage soup can no longer be suppressed. I understand that people think this deli is pricey, but Brookline and Boston have delis that are equally expensive, and some not nearly as authentic. This is for Jewish food mavens only. If you don't like your corned beef piled high on the roll, turn your nose up at cabbage soup, f''get about it. I had matzoh ball soup with a fluffy knadel in it that was so light you could use it as a pillow, and the brisket sandwich on a roll was to die for (and from, no doubt). I took a quart of cabbage soup and a tray of meat knishes home, just for good measure and I will ration them out over the week at times when I have been a very good boy. Don't get hung up on uninformed b.s. and trivia, relax and enjoy.

I was so upset at the way we were treated on Sunday, that I called Barry's on Monday and asked to speak to the owner. Please note, I do NOT like to call a business to complain. I am the one who always calls up or goes on line in praise of an employee but the treatment we received was so awful, I felt compelled to call. I was connected to the owner's wife and she was very nice but basically told me I had to understand they were in the midst of the Jewish holiday, which is equivalent to our Christmas and they were slammed with business. She went on to say how hard it was to find good employees. She did make it her business to find out who it was that was working that day that was so rude to us and he was working that day. She confronted him (I could hear the whole conversation) and went on to tell me how shocked she was. She would have bet money it was another employee. (SHOULD THIS HAVE MADE ME FEEL BETTER?) She further went on to tell me this employee that was rude to me has season football tickets that he can't use and yes, they do shut their grills off 30 minutes before closing. REALLY?? I have to say, this is WAY to exhausting for a pastrami sandwich!!! Bottom line, if you advertise you're open until 3; you're open until 3, GRILL AND ALL! And furthermore, you ALWAYS are kind to employees. It's that simple. The owner told me to come back for a free reuben. No thanks. I don't want anything for free. I just want a good product and good service. See you later Barry's Village Deli!!!! File this one under, Fifty Shades of IGNORANT!

I walked into this deli today and patiently waited to place my order behind one customer. Another woman came in just as it was my turn to order and the deli guy completely ignored me and took her order first. She was obviously a regular as he knew her name. She preceded to order 5 sandwiches. When I said something to him about being ignored, his customer was more apologetic than he was -- he just continued on with her order so I walked out.

Barry's deli is a ripoff. Just because they are in fancy pants Waban they think they can charge OUTRAGEOUS prices. RUDE RUDE RUDE PEOPLE behind the counter who make you feel like you are just a bother. I used to be able to justify paying $10 for a sandwich because it was good a couple of years ago...just went in today and payed $13 for the same sandwich and it SUCKED. Dry, flavorless and soggy bread. SMARTEN UP BARRY'S DELI, YOU SNOBS.

Stopped in for breakfast, I ordered the feta-tomato omelette and added spinach to jazz it up! it came with crispy homefrys, and lots of toast! I also drank beyond the amount of coffee I needed to because it's bottomless. next time I want to try one of the giant sandwhiches. easy enough to get to and ample parking, a nice family owned deli. feels nice to support a little local spot like this.

What a disappointment - maybe if you live in Waban and have nothing else to compare it to but had high hopes that were dashed by cold flavorless turkey and corned beef sandwiches with just awful presentation. Service is cheerful but I've had better truckstop food on the highway

Although Barry's Village Deli states that they close at 5pm on Saturdays, they always close at least 10 minutes early, even when there are customers standing at the door. Every Saturday, my husband takes my children out of karate 15 minutes early so he can treat them to Italian ices from Barry's, and every Saturday at 4:45pm they stand at the locked door looking in as the staff from Barry's ignores them. The last straw was this past Saturday when at 4:45pm a man working at Barry's literally locked the door as my 12 year old daughter was about to open it. Perhaps, they do not need the business, however they clearly need better manners. If they want to close at 4:45, they should change the hours on their sign. We will never give Barry's Deli our business again for either Italian ices or their mediocre deli foods, although this shouldn't be a problem since they always lock the door when we try.

Unreal portions and great food. Not too expensive, especially since half a sandwich is a meal!

As a longtime customer of Barry's - I was astonished to be totally ripped off by them when I ordered a potato knish to go. I took $3 out of my wallet to pay and the counter guy asked if I wanted it heated up - of course i said. Well five minutes later it came out - he said that will be $5.31. Needless to say I was shocked - I said it says 2.99usd on the menu board for a knish. He said yes that's for a COLD knish. I said you have got to be kidding me - you want $2.00 for heating up a knish?? The woman behind the counter said yes that's a Manual operation. Good thing I didn't order a coffee!!!!

Barry's is such a tough call. Impressive baked goods selections and some of the very freshest meat products in Newton. The place can get crowded around lunchtime and especially on the weekends. That's my main beef with them...unless one knows the layout of the restaurant and counter, he or she is left looking around for some help in navigating the place. Gotta do something about traffic control at busy times. Nevertheless, on arriving, Barry's turns out to be a worthwhile stop. Sandwiches are kind of highly priced, but that's what one would expect in this neighborhood, and for this quality of food. Meals here compare to the best delis in New York or Brookline in quality. The selection behind the counter is excellent for anyone wanting to take some real deli freshness home. I'll certainly be back.

Super yummy, super huge Jewish-foodie nom noms..mmm. The guy behind the counter could totally tell I was a first timer because of the "omg, there are so many things going on here, what do I do?!" look on my face. He was really patient and helped me navigate my way through the wonderfully enticing menu. I only wish they would extend their hours a bit...sometimes I just need my kasha varniskas (sp?) fix!! Don't worry mom, I still love your Jewish noms too!!

You ever have those days when you wake up with a hankering for some hot, artery-clogging comfort food? Well such was a day for me last week, a day that happened to coincide with my office's holiday luncheon. I strolled into the office desperate for some sodium or fat-laden treat and someone suggests Barry's Village Deli for lunch. After a quick perusal of the menu (at which point I swear the Reuben sandwich menu item winked at me) I was on board. In fact, I think that may have been the best idea ever put forth by my coworkers. We ordered Reubens and the Jewish Pu Pu Platter. The Reuben was delicious, I wolfed mine down in the amount of time it took my coworker to take a few bites. It was a bit soggy on the bottom, but its takeout so I can't expect crisp toasted rye. They also were not too liberal with the dressing which I appreciate. The latka and kugel were also good, but I was too full to try the knish and not in any hurry to try the chopped liver that completed the JPP. The pickle was delicious and I seriously contemplated stealing one from the communal pile even though it was earmarked for someone else. ("You snooze you lose" rhetoric would probably not be appreciated among professional adults.) As an added bonus for an office full of ravenous people; we faxed in our order complete with names and they wrote the name on each person's order. That way you don't have that nasty guy in the cube next to you unwrapping your sandwich and waving it around your germy office asking "who ordered this?" Gross. I would definitely come back here if I were in the area. And will definitely, definitely suggest it again for the next office lunch. And the next, and the next.

Have eaten here many times over the years. Last time I was in had a tasty Hot Pastrami sandwich with a side of potato salad. Service by the waitstaff was fast and friendly.

First visit today for lunch...impressive. Had the reuben, and while I was waiting for it, I scoped out three or four more sandwiches that I will definitely be going back for. A few more bucks than I usually spend on lunch, but the reuben was totally worth it.

Matzo Ball soup! OMG, how delicious it is!!! When I first started working in MA, I worked in Waban. Its a cute little unfriendly village of peeps with serious $$. I had no idea where to eat lunch. I used to drive all the way to West Newton to go to Sub way. Ugh! Grosss! One day someone told me about Barry's. I'm thinkin they must have slipped up and gave me the best kept secret in the freakin village. Delicious food, friendly-ish employees, and great lunch choices. I became a regular. Minus one star for the steep prices. And now...I live down the street. I have come full circle!

Thanks Yelpers! I had to meet a friend halfway between Allston and Framingham for lunch, and ended up picking this place based on the reviews. What a great choice. I had a corned beef and pastrami combo sandwich, and it was excellent. The cole slaw on the side was good too (usually I don't like cole slaw, so that's a pretty big compliment). Furthermore, I was pleased to see such meats as knockwurst and tongue on the menu. This is a real deli, and really good. They also have a huge selection of takeout stuff (in addition to sandwiches, you've got yer matzo ball soup, knishes, etc.).

There is simply no better "deli" in the Boston area. Since moving here from Jersey, I've tried deli after deli, sandwich shop after sandwich shop, cafe after cafe, and Barry's is as close as you can get to a true NY style deli up here. Starting simple - they do great, big, overstuffing breakfasts. But I'm not here for breakfast. I'm here for mountainous sandwiches, outstanding sides, and top notch deli meat. Ok, and delicious homemade prepared foods. The sandwiches here are huge. You should not try to eat a whole sandwich - you don't need it... but you will want it. And that's not even "barry size" which takes things to whole new level of a coma-inducing deli-slice of heaven. Don't be put off by the occasional item with tongue or liver - just filter past those and focus on those containing massive corned beef, turkey, pastrami and other heavenly delights. Smotherings of homemade slaw and russian dressing. Real rye bread, and a side of in-house potato salad. For any NJ-ers, you can come SO close to a true sloppy joe (not that manwich crap) here (just needs that 3rd slice of bread) - its almost like home. They have a couple menu sandwiches along the lines of a joe, but will alter it to your specifications.. though I havent tried to get that third slice, I wonder if they would.. Prices may appear steep until you see your order - but don't fret. Your sandwich will weigh more than your arm.

Good corned beef, good tongue, excellent thin-sliced swiss. Have Dr. Brown's Cherry. Worth the 5 minute drive from where I was in Newton. Appropriately surly staff fit the ambiance. Both the takeout line and the bustling dining room were crowded for lunch -- a good sign.

Barry's is an excellent NY style deli with great cuts of cured beef ( corned beef and pastrami) as well as roast beef, turkey and smoked fish. I love the turkey, swiss, on rye with coleslaw, sandwich as well as the whitefish salad on a bagel. They never close- 24/7/365 but they do run out of bagels. Go figure! Not extremely friendly but the food is authentic and tasty. Pricing varies depending who takes the order, each time I go in, but over time it probably averages out.

Overpriced.... 3 bagels with cream cheese will cost you $25... $30 if you want them toasted.

I decided to try another sandwich from Barry's. Major bonus = they're open on Sundays. I had a chix salad on a roll. Quite tasty, and it comes with both a pickle and an individual sized container of potato salad. I'll definitely return for more eats.

There is not really much I can add to the other comments. It's SOOOO good! There is one thoroughly incompetent waitress who can't be bothered from her busy chit-chat schedule to ever refill coffee or drop off the check. We've had her twice in a row now, and same thing! But we keep going back anyway. It's totally worth it! Anecdotally, we have been advised that ordering a "Barry-sized" sandwich is tantamount to suicide. Suicide by Corned beef and pastrami? I can think of worse ways to go.

This is perhaps the finest deli in the greater Boston area. When you walk in (or look in) you see a tiny bodega looking store, with a deli case on the right, and some chips and such on your left. However, further towards the back is the entrance to the dining room, with a small upstairs seating area as well. The food is real deli food, awesome omelettes, great hash (not quite Johnnys luncheonette, but better than most) and terrific sandwiches. Get it "Barry sized" with double the meat, god help you if you can finish it. I finished one once after a brutal workout and I think im still digesting some of it. Also, the "Jewish pu-pu platter" is great! You get chopped liver, a knish, a latke, some kugel, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Terrific matzah ball soup too. Also, there is a Russian food store next door, if you want some fun stuff, or in my case shopping :P

Most definitely the best Jewish deli food in the area, putting establishments in Brookline to shame. I understand they prepare and cook all their deli meat (corned beef, pastrami, etc) in-house, and you can tell. This place reminds me very much of the little delis I used to visit in NJ with my grandparents, which tells me exactly how authentic it is.

I live a block from this place and until yesterday i had never been in! What I fool I was! I had see the place sure on my almost daily sojourn to the wonderful Waban Market but I had never been in. From the street it looks like a very busy deli counter with people lined up to buy meats and other deli noshables. Looks are deceiving, there is a room to sit and eat with an upstairs too. The sandwichs are to die for! Something Barry's Size means the size of an average Waban house! This is amazing, it was like being in New York but the service was friendly! I am shocked that I hadn't been in before! I foresee many a lunch in my futrue coming from Barry's! Who knew Waban could have such a gem. I LOVE WABAN!

I ordered matzoh ball soup and an egg salad sandwich. The matzoh ball soup was decent but the egg salad was horrible - disgusting, even. Egg salad is not that difficult to make, so I was sorely disappointed.

I've been on a consulting engagement down the road and as soon as I discovered this place on Yelp I've gone there almost every day for Lunch and sometimes for dinner too. The Meat is high quality and they pile it on and the bread is always fresh. I've also had a knish and the rugelach and they were very good. I do agree with the comment about the layout, but seriously who cares. You get your fantastic corned beef or pastrami or turkey or if even salami and corned beef and you eat it. Who cares what the layout is like!

Some of the best deli in Boston (what's left of it). Nice little place to have lunch. Good pastrami, potato knishes. Not the Stage or the Carnegie or Katz's, but good nonetheless. One of the few places that still knows how to make a respectable egg cream. Recommended.

What a hidden jewel. I've driven up and down Beacon street so many times before noticing this place. This place beats the pants off any other deli and reminds me of what real deli should be like growing up from NYC. I absolutely love it here. There's nothing bad on the menu, although it's a little limited, but still you can't go wrong with a nice sandwich and maybe a nice bowl of soup.

I love the food, here. The dining area off to the left was not so crowded the last time late in the afternoon. The prices are expensive, but just go on a cash diet the day before. It's totally worth it. BVD qualifies as a "Good Place". A place where people go to make a purchase, in this case food, and interact with the others in a great atmosphere.

The best corned beef sandwich around, perfect matza ball soup, and the greasiest potato latkes I've ever tasted. This is the kind of place with food that tastes amazing, then about twenty minutes later, makes you feel like you're going to die. I love it.

I looooooooooove this place. Too bad my friends don't live in Newton anymore.... It's looks like a dive, but it's really really good for sammiches. Matza ball soup is good too.

barrys is located in the hart of waben. at barrys the smoked samon and the bagels are unbeliveable even then the nyc style. the papi seed bagels are as good as they get so if you ever are around for some bagels and smoked samon you should come here instead of rosenfelds. rosenfelds is ok but barrys makes it seem like the rosenfelds bagels are bad, not that rosenfelds is bad but barrys is unbeliveable.

I love Artie's Combo Sandwich #2 - corned beef, pastrami, swiss, cole slaw and russian dressing, which comes with amazing potato salad! I also like Barry's dill pickles (not the little ones that come with your sandwich - those aren't sour enough for me). It is a tad pricey, but for the delicious sandwiches it is well worth a visit.

The best knish I've had around Boston. Good matzoh ball soup with fresh and hearty chunks of chicken. Sandwiches are a little expensive but they are HUGE. It's bustling on the weekends during lunch. They also do take-out/catering. Mmmm, Barry's!

Thank you yelpers! This place is nothing short of Deli Nirvana. The Corned Beef and Reuben Sandwiches were the best I've ever had in the metro Boston area. The Rueben Sandwich, in particular, is decadent and worth recommending to anyone whom isn't constraint by a diet. The portions are generous and the cuts are fresh and delicious. I look forward to sampling the entirety of their menu over time.

  • Gina P.

Delicious!!! They have a wide variety of true jewish-deli choices. The pastrami and corned beef are fantastic, as are the tongue and liver (so I'm told by coworkers, I can't say that I've ventured to those options on my own just yet). These sandwiches are huge, so if you're going to splurge on the matzo ball soup as well, make sure you get a small. It will be plenty! If you happen to be in a rush and need to grab something quick to take home, they have a number of refrigerators just filled with delicious homemade goodies for you to take home and heat up (explicit directions included!).

I'm not quick to dis in my yelping capacity, but this place puts the DIS in disappointed. I was expecting a yummy lunch in a homey atmosphere. I was thinking mmmm: greasy, flavorful reuben from a reputable Jewish deli such as this. Instead I got a wimpy, dry sammy, with a side order of "forgot the chips," and a heaping helping of unaccommodating service. I dined with friends, my husband, and infant daughter in their deli lounge annex and I couldn't believe how rude the service was. We asked for a fruit cup for my daughter, it being one of the first items on the menu. We were told they "never have fruit" and were not offered a single alternative. Ah, a side salad it is. The food was all right for the noshing, and the pastries in the cases did look delicious. But all told, very disappointed, especially based on other reviews that had inflated our hopes that this might be our one true Reuben mecca.

Great little place. Eat in or take out. The best corned beef I have ever had. The combo #2 is to die for. Get a real New Yorky atmosphere as the help is can be short with answers but always accomodating & usually entertaining to watch as sometimes it is very very busy. In the summer now they have Lobster salad - excellent.
