Situated a little far back from the main road (Rt. 3A) on North Street, this is (like others who have already said so) one of the best eating places in the South Shore. I have been here 4 times and the food and service never fail. I was here with 2 others yesterday. I had the grilled local sea scallops set atop basil fried rice with garlic stir-fried collard greens drizzled with tangerine-lemon butter sauce. + coconut creme brulee with mascarpone whipped cream. My companions had the grilled salmon salad. Simply superb delicious food served in an inviting well-appointed setting!

Love this restaurant. I've been numerous times for lunch and dinner. Their are so few places worth leaving the city to go to -- this is one of them! The only downer is that the bar area is tiny and always filled early with regulars.. it's difficult to get a seat most nights after 6:30. Disregarding that though, this place is great for lunch or dinner.

I have been here twice now and I could not be happier to have good food on the south shore. I used to drive into Boston to meet clients for dinner & drinks because I honestly gave up hope for a good spot to eat in this area. The food it seriously top notch and it is certainly innovative but not pretentious. The service is great and the managers are very welcoming and accommodating. Square cafe is certainly making good food in an area filled with mediocrity geared towards tourists. A+

This is one of our go-to places in town. I love the Hemingway style bar up front and the calamari. Service is always professional and friendly. Very tasteful decor.

I recently took my baby and a friend visiting from out of town to Square Cafe - to both have a nice lunch at a place with a good reputation and to take in the ambience that is downtown Hingham. We were not disappointed! The menu wasn't overwhelming and had a lot of fresh items. I had a nice, healthy salad and soup, and she had the smoked turkey grilled cheese... Let's just say that I had massive food envy! Service was very pleasant and they were very accommodating to put our snap n go stroller next to our table. We'll definitely put Square Cafe on the regular rotation of our restaurants!

I truly enjoy this restaurant. I come here a couple times per month. The food here is absolutely delicious and extremely consistent! Highly recommend!

This is a great local place with class. I've had both lunch and dinner here. You might be alone at lunch, but very busy for dinner. Nicely appointed, quality service. Food it very acceptable but not over the top. Nor is it cheap, I still like it a lot.

We have recently gravitated here on Sunday afternoons for a late lunch. The food is still superb. The Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura is a fantastic appetizer. I really enjoy the sirloin steak salad and my wife loves the flat bread pizza. All the staff is excellent and John the Manager keeps things upbeat and fun. This is in our top 3 of favorite restaurants on the South Shore.

I have been here several times. Food is always good, so is service. However, the menu prices have gotten a bit out of control. The 8oz tenderloin, which is prepared perfectly, is now $35.00. This equates to $70.00 a pound for the dish. Beet salad (and most other green salads) is $14.00. A dinner for two with drinks, etc. easily tops $200 with tip. It appears the restaurant has attempted to offer lower cost options like a turkey sandwich, fish tacos and a few other items but seems out of place. Becoming more of a special occasion vs just dining out.

Love the Square Cafe for the food, atmosphere and ambiance. It's everything Hingham is rolled into a great restaurant. Order the MUSSELS, I can drink the broth! (and give you a spoon), TUNE 2 WAYS, CALAMARI, ROASTED BEET SALAD, FILET OR MAHI MAHI....I could go on. I would have given 5 stars but I've ordered the steak twice and it keeps coming med-well not med-rare....the chefd should know that means I want it pink in the middle. Yes, I've given it back to have it come out again wrong but what are you gonna do, I was starving. The older male bartender and get a little preoccupied too. I'll definitely be back...it's just so pretty inside!

One of my all time favorite restaurants. Sandy and I frequent here about once a month, or every other month at the latest. We've been going t o the Square Café for several years, and since that the very first time we went, we have never had a single bad experience. The menu is fantastic and very original. Chef Andrea Schnell is extremely talented, and clearly knows how put food together to create an extraordinary experience while dining. The entire menu is tempting, because all of it is done so well, which makes it difficult to pick. No matter what you choose, this place is always a hit. The menu is changed from time to time, and the specials are always creative. They have a very inviting list of starters to choose from and one of our favorites is the mussels. They are, by far the, greatest mussels we have had yet. Ironically, mussels were something that Sandy never liked until she came here. We have tried mussels in a number of different restaurants since, and we always use Square Café's version as a reference point for quality and flavor, and Square Cafés muscles continue to hold the crown. They are cooked in the most heavenly lobster broth you will ever have. I recommend using the fresh baked, crusty, sour dough bread that is served with every meal, to mop up all that luscious nectar. I have even gone so far as to take the remaining broth home to cook another dish with it, and apparently, I'm not the only one who has done this. On one of our many visits to the Square Café, they were featuring a New Zealand rack of lamb, and Sandy, who never in her life liked lamb, was feeling adventurous and ordered it. This alone says a lot about the Square Café, because she wouldn't go anywhere near lamb before this night. Civil dining gave way to primal carnage, as she gnawed every tasty morsel off of each bone like a tigress finishing off the final scraps of a fresh kill. It was that good. I force myself to get something different every time I go there, instead of getting what blew me away last time and the time before that. There really is no such thing as a gamble when you order anything at this place. Taste and presentation are always spot on which is a reflection of Chef Schnell's great skills in bringing out the best in any ingredient she chooses to be creative with. The menu is set up with entrees in small and large plates. Don't let the smaller plates and portions fool you, however. The small plates are more than filling and satisfying, for most. After having one of the most amazing meals you have ever had you can treat yourself to any one of the masterful creations of the pastry chef. You can blindly drop your finger on the dessert menu and order whatever you pointed to. You will be seduced with every sweet and scrumptious, endorphin- firing bite. The dining room is small, but intimate and cozy. We've sat in it, but prefer to sit at the bar, for one reason alone, and his name is John Chiaviaroli. Jon is the assistant dining room and bar manager. John has been a good friend of mine for many years in the business. He is over the top with his unique comical demeanor, and he has built a devout and growing following with his colorful personality. I honestly believe John has special senses, because he always seems to know when his guests are just about to walk in. He has your martini glass chilling as you cross the Hingham line, tosses the ice as you park your car, and has your perfectly made martini ready for you when you walk through the door. And if he has juggled the crowd just right, will already have seat ready and waiting for you, still warm from the folks that just got up. That, my friends, is a skill beyond comprehension, and a rare find in this business. In life, you make sure you have a good doctor, mechanic, and in some cases a lawyer; and when you find a John Chiaviaroli, You KEEP HIM! There's never a dull moment when John is on the bar, and you most assuredly will not leave the Hingham Square Café without a full and happy belly, and at least one belly laugh, too. UPDATE: As of today 11/2/14 I have learned that John no longer works there and we are saddened by this. He was a great part of our experience. I will seek him out wherever he lands

My husband & I dined here last night for our anniversary. Great experience! Elegant but relaxed atmosphere, very nice server and delicious food. We split the calamarie appetizer which was lighter than it looked (and a large serving for two people), beef tenderloin (delicious) and my husband had the tuna entree which he loved. We finished with the molton chocolate cake which was to die for. I wish I had left more room so I could have enjoyed it more without feeling overly stuffed...but it was well worth it! My husband also tried their pear martini which he said was very good (and strong). We can't wait to go back again!

Went to this spot over the weekend- our server Garrett (?) was excellent. The place was hopping- the owner sure is organized- she runs this place like a very tight ship! The beet salad was yummie- the calamari was amazing- they even made parsnips taste good- We weren't rushed- it was comfortable. Only issue was the parking which was a pain!- I'll be back in the warm weather.

Just finished the most wonderful meal here. My family has gone here a number of times, and wanted to share this great place with me. The restaurant itself was beautiful on the inside , white linen table cloths, pillows around the booths, beautiful flowers. Etc I started with a very tasty drink that was made with coconut Malibu rum, pineapple juice and coconut water......... Then a fresh beet salad with blue cheese, pecans and topped with arugula. Then the best grilled chicken salad I ever had!!!! Arugula, beets, cucumbers, three different types of tomatoes , avocados, goat cheese, etc. If you are ever in Hingham, Ma. You must go here

We were told by the manager of another eatery to try the Square Cafe for lunch after being turned away by their crowd this sunny Sunday, and are grateful for his recommendation. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will return there next time we visit the area. My husband ordered the tuna entree and I the quiche, salad and soup. His tuna was served with fresh vegetables in a roll up and accompanied by a ginger soy dipping sauce. House made potato chips made the meal complete. Raw fish is not something I enjoy , but he raved about it. I had to give the combo I ordered a lower mark because the soup of the day looked and tasted exactly like Campbells beef vegetable with barley. Fresh salad and individual quiche were adequate. The bread preceding the meal was phenomenal, fresh baked tasting and served with oil infused herbs and red pepper flakes and parmesan. The service was top notch. When I return I will not get the soup, but look forward to one of the huge salads , like the salmon, sirloin, or spicy shrimp and noodles. That one seemed to be a popular dish as we saw many diners with long chopsticks.

This has become a favorite for my husband and I. The food is really wonderful and we've always had good service. They cook their meats perfectly, moist and tender, and their sauces are always delectable. If you have for dessert, the chocolate molten cake is one of their best. We also enjoy the size of the venue and its decor.

After a horrible experience at an outside establishment on the water in Cohasset, my friend and I went to the Square Cafe. What a breath of fresh air this place is! The wait staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, the decor was lovely, the vibe was super relaxing and the food superb! It is apparent that care to every detail of the dining experience is carefully considered at this establishment. Definitely a go to spot. Cheers!

Food was fabulous-service was awful. We had 6pm reservations but when they called to confirm they said the reservations were for 545...I explained the reservations were for 6 and that is the time we had arranged to meet friends. I was told that since "the person who took the reservation filled in the form incorrectly I guess it is our error. We will honor the 6pm time". From the second we walked in the door-we got the bums rush out the door. The waitress was awful. We tried to order appetizers and were told that she cannot take an order for apps only for the whole meal since that is "how the kitchen is set up". We asked for bread and she said she wasn't going to bring it because she didn't want us to fill up on that before "the good stuff"???? Too bad because the food was quite good...I wouldn't go back...

Some of the most delicious food I've ever tried. Amazing steak, calamari, tuna...can't go wrong here. Old down side is the place is small, but they take reservations so make one and try it out!

I loved Square Cafe! A few of us went to square cafe for a business meeting. The waitress was delightful! She knew exactly what to recommend to each of us, though many of us were very picky. Absolutely try the Salmon Salad - It is like NOTHING you have ever tasted. A completely unique dish - you won't find anything else like it in all of the Boston area..

An inventive menu where most items lie just beyond your comfort zone- and you'll be happy you took the plunge. I started with fried calamari served with mango, grapefruit and cashews. It was unlike any other calamari I've had before, with a range of textures from crispy and crunchy to smooth and fresh. Delicious! For an entree I had the duck breast with butternut squash. I'm fairly new to duck and my server, Luke, was helpful and informative in the process of ordering. The dish was plated beautifully and cooked to perfection, complimented by flavors like sage and orange zest. I sampled my girlfriend's scallops and they were the biggest silkiest scallops everrrr. Finally, I had pumpkin creme brûlée and it was everything I could have hoped for in a pumpkin dish- fresh pumpkin flavor and no weird coloring or excessive sugar. It was garnished with and orchid and Luke was even nice enough to bring out a candle for my friend! Cocktails were great, service was even better (thanks Luke!) and the atmosphere was sweet and cozy. I'd recommend reservations as it was quite busy! I'll definitely return.

One of my favorite places on the South Shore. Small inside, but cozy, open, and warm. The food is beyond delicious....I've had their Barolo Braised Beef Short Rib (didn't even need a knife, it was so tender) and I've also had their Ribeye (cooked perfectly medium). Even their sides are amazing, whether starch or vegetable. Their Caesar salad I usually split with whomever I'm with prior to the meal, you can get the anchovies on the side, I personally don't care for them. I tried their dessert last weekend when I dined there, we had the maple bread pudding with a caramel sauce- out of this world!! Wine list has plenty of choices for any palate; I tried their rose, it was very good. The presentation is also excellent; they take pride in their food both in delivery and taste! All of the waitstaff are courteous and attentive. They come back and check that everything is to your satisfaction, fill your water without asking, and even swipe away crumbs on the table during your meal. It's not too cheap, but well worth the price. Paid $145 for 4 glasses of wine, salad, braised beef dish, beef tenderloin, and dessert. I've eaten here quite a few times and will continue to come back for the excellent food, service, and presentation.

The first table they sat us at... shouldn't even be a table. Right next to the bathrooms and was teeny. Clearly the hostess wanted to test us to see if we were willing to sit at the kiddie table. Uh no.... Food was delicious and our server was top notch. I wish I could remember the name of our waitress-she was experienced and wonderful. Atmosphere is classy, maybe a little bit pretentious. The decor is modern and yet still quaint and combined with the delectable food and the exceptional service of the waitstaff it makes for charming and romantic experience-perfect for date night.

I'll preface this review by saying that my friend won a $200 GC here and we finally used it last night. There were only 3 of us, and we definitely tried it all! Saturday nights here are apparently crazy. They say reservations are recommended but I'm pretty sure they are your only option. Called that day and they could only take us at 9pm. The place is not very big but ambiance is nice. My husband was wowed at all the little touches: cleaning the crumbs off the table, the waiters rushing over to fold the napkins if you go to the bathroom. The bread was nice, dipping oil was wonderful and I'm not usually into that. We had some martinis. My favorite was the Bikinitini with the toasted coconut rim. We tried the egg rolls with the delicious pineapple dipping sauce and also the flatbread pizza. Not huge apps but very good. Got a Caesar salad for the table to split that was pretty usual. I had the ribeye which was cooked to order. My dinner dates both got the scallops and both raved that it was the best they ever had! The fried shrimp rice was great as well. I wasn't overly impressed with the desserts. The presentation was great but they weren't the sweetest of desserts. The molten chocolate cake was a bit bitter to me, much more higher of a cocoa percentage I think than I usually care for. The carrot cake was a huge individual cupcake but covered with whip cream, the frosting was just on the plate. I could have easily skipped the desserts. We spent around $250 including the tip for all these courses for the 3 of us. Glad we tried it all. Not quite sure if I'd spend my own money here, but it was a great experience. Portions weren't tiny but not big either. Menu was pretty small. Wish there were a bit more choices.

The Square Cafe is one of our favorite restaurants! We have been here numerous times over the years and it is very consistent. This time went with wife and friends. First...the ambiance is warm, cozy, comfortable and sophisticated; you feel relaxed just stepping into the restaurant. The staff is consistently friendly and accommodating (our server, Alan, was attentive, helpful, pleasant and accommodating.) And the food...it is consistently superb! The striped bass special - bass over a corn and tomato risotto - was spectacular! One of my new favorite dishes. The Caesar salad was solid with fresh white anchovies. For dessert, molten chocolate cake was something special - outstanding cake, with pools of warm caramel and chocolate sauces, and crushed English toffee. Cannot wait to go back!!

Excellent food. Amazing service (our waiter was a young guy who was attentive and charming). The whole experience was flawless. An intimate, cozy place to celebrate an occasion or go out with girlfriends on a Saturday night dinner. Tried the stuffed pork chop, duck, pork belly, and shrimp tempura...all were wonderful. For dessert, I had the salted caramel icecream. Easily the best icecream I've ever had in my life. I will be back!

Went last night with some business colleagues. Soy lacquered pork belly was really, really good - white anchovy on the caesar salad...nice touch up of class. Great red wine and great atmosphere. We had fun on a business date, but would take my wife on a date here as well.

You rock!!! The best place to eat on the south shore. Previously I would have to drive into the city every weekend to find good food. This place is very consistent in every aspect-quality of food and service.

Sometimes places get hyped up and then you go and you wonder what they are all talking about. I don't understand these reviews that say this is the best dining experience. It really isn't that good. I was very disappointed and will never go back. I wonder if they write the reviews themselves or pay someone to write them. If you have had great food before you will be disappointed here. The only way I can explain these reviews is that the most popular restaurants on the South shore are Bertuccis, The 99, and any other horrible chain you can think of. Seriously, if someone gave me a choice between the original BK chicken sandwich or the Square Cafe I would go with the chicken sangy from BK. No doubt.

The finest dining on the South Shore! I've had dinner here a few times, and every time it has been superb! Everything from the artisan bread and chive-infused olive oil dipping sauce to start, the comprehensive cocktail list, delectable seasonally inspired mains, and out of this world desserts, are sublime. Service is impeccable - attentive, but unobtrusive. We had the hot & sour calamari, seared yellowfin ahi, duck medallions - as well as pumpkin bread pudding and creme brûlée to finish. I want to dine here again just thinking about it. Massive compliments to the chef! The herbs, contrasting flavors, innovative pairings, etc. make everything I've ever had the pleasure to eat here, the very best of that particular food I've ever eaten. The dining room is modern, cozy, and elegant. it's a perfect place to go for a date, or to take family from out of town. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality.

I hadn't been to SC in years but remembered it being v good and looked forward to going back with my husband. Just after 5pm on a Wednesday in the summer, we stopped in and and experience the most pretentious 20 minutes of our lives. We arrived just after opening and clearly no one was happy to see us. The hostess made us feel like we had walked into a private party, the server was eating a meal at the bar (and when my husband went to sit at the bar she rudely moved away, clearly upset that customers had come in) and the bartender looked at me in such an unfriendly way that I had to literally look down to see if I had something on my shirt. We intended to get a few drinks and an appetizer.. My husband had just come from a job interview and we were going to relax and talk about it. I was so uncomfortable I wanted to leave right away, but we decided to order a drink. The discomfort never went away, I felt like the employees were staring at us with disgust as if we had no right to be there... We ended up finishing our drink and leaving. But not before the bartender partook in a loud conversation with other bar customers trashing a local business... Which just so happens to be the one my husband had interviewed with! Rude staff, bad experience, skip the square!

When you read this description, what do you expect? "Asian Fish Taco" - Togorashi Seared Yellow fin Tuna, Wasabi Crème Fraiche, Soy Syrup, Gingered Coleslaw, House Made Chips. 18. If you're like me, you probably expected something delicious and impressive, in which case you would have been wrong. There were no tacos, there were 2 mini, soggy "wraps". There was almost no tuna in them, and it was not seared. It was raw. I like raw tuna, but not when I'm expecting seared tuna. The soy syrup came on the side and I skipped it altogether because the wrap was already drowning in sauce. They were really heavy-handed with the wasabi creme fraiche. There was no cole slaw. There were some julienned vegetables inside the wrap but not too many and I didn't taste any ginger. I guess I assumed the house made chips would have been fried wonton chips or maybe even friend tortilla chips since this was billed as a "taco", but they were potato chips. Nothing wrong with that - I was just surprised. They were actually very good but after eating them I kind of had that queasy, "wow, those were pretty greasy" feel. To me, this was a serious case of false advertising and I would never order this dish again. I'm not usually one to complain about price but I do think $18 was pretty steep for this, given the minuscule portion of tuna. I'd guess there was a total of 2 ounces total, maybe? I'm keeping the 3 star rating because I do like other things from here, as mentioned in my previous review - most notably the Square Burger and the Yellowfin Tuna Two-ways (which is what I should have ordered last night). It's also a nice spot with nice service.

Square café is "THE" best restaurant on the south shore. I have been coming here for years and have never had a bad meal. My favorites on the menu are as follows: Appetizer Sautéed Mussels in thai lemon grass broth (the closest taste to Thailand I have had since living in there) Crispy Hot & Sour Calamari (crispy and refreshing with the grapefruit and roasted cashews) Entrée: Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna - This is the best tuna you will ever have let me repeat myself this is the best tuna you will ever have... it is hard not to order it each time I am at Sqaure cafe. The Pomegranate syrup and bok choy and jasmine rice compliment it very well. Griled Prime Rib Chop - this is not your usual fatty prime rib it is a delicious cut of steak smothered in foie gras butter served with truffled spinach. This past weekend we had an early Saturday evening reservation. I finally had the will power to order different items (although we still ordered the mussels). The Water Melon Feta Salad was refreshing and delicious. For my entrée I ordered off the small menu (which was not small). I had the Sea Scallops with summer corn risotto, seared perfect with a nice truffle flavor to the risotto. I ordered a Glass of the Cryptic which is always an excellent choice. It is a juicy delicious blend. Our Waitress was Amy who was wonderful as usual. I look forward to my frequent visits to Square Café!

The Square Cafe easily has the best food on the South Shore. As a vegetarian it is extremely difficult to find places outside of Boston that have vegetarian options, but I've found the Square Cafe offers a vegetarian tasting option (not on the menu) that is quite good. In addition, their chili seared noodles are available without meat and are great.

Dinner was EXCELLENT! We took one of our clients here for dinner so I got to splurge! First of all, I'm not a fan of mussels but since we ordered them as an app I had to try one... I mean a dozen! I was blown away by the flavor and texture as they were sitting in this succulent spicy Thai lobster broth. I'd come back for this dish alone. We also shared the shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizer which was lightly fried and fun to pick on while we were waiting for our main courses. For the main course, I highly recommend their brown sugar braised beef dish. The meat was so tender and the flavors seemed to melt throughout every bite, amazing. I was stuffed and passed on the desert but I regret it because they looked delish. I can't wait to go back!

No doubt this is a nice restaurant, the atmosphere, decor, really nice but mother of God the noise level on a saturday night was almost unbearable! I can usually tolerate it but for some reason last night it was deafening! The food, well, this menu hasn't much changed in 10 years, tired, uninspired. How can a restaurant that never changes its menu have just one dinner special and run out of it by 8pm? Not to mention a couple of months ago we dined here and it was the same special. It seems to me it's either time for a new chef or someone needs to create some fresh new ideas into the menu. Service is always decent enough, but when the server has to bend down and scream for you to hear them, maybe the noise distracts even them. Ive always loved this restaurant and in the past have highly recommended it. We won't return.

This is really a 3.5 star review but the 3 star description of "A OK" just won't do it justice... A group of us came here for a birthday celebration. The atmosphere and food was excellent but the service was A-OK. Service: The waiter came by to take our drink order and we asked him for a drink menu. He leaves, comes back 10 mins later and asked if we're ready to order drinks...but we still haven't gotten the drink menu you see. He finally brings it over and we ordered ourselves a round. And good lord are their drinks strong. i could not even finish half of my martini! We ordered appetizers to share and followed by our entree. He never checked to see if our food was ok or refilled my water glass. Food: For appetizers, we ordered the calamari, mussels and a beet salad to share. The calamari was really good. It was crisy and light, not chewy and i didn't even need sauce, there was a hint of sweetness to it. The mussels were excellent as well - cooked in a sauce that was a bit spicy but very flavorful. It goes really well with the bread they serve. The beet salad was interesting. It was chunks of beets with chunks of blue cheese. The presentation was great...but i'm not sure about beets and blue cheese. In my opinion, the 2 are too powerful to be served together. For an entree, i ordered the Cider Glazed Stuffed Pork Chop served Spinach, Dried Cranberries, English Cheddar, Caramelized Onions, & Sweet Potato Gratin. Granted i don't normally order pork, this dish was very good. I let my friends try some and they all loved it. The pork chop was cooked perfectly. Other parties got salmon, prime rib chop & braised short ribs - everyone loved their food. For desserts, we ordered the coconut creme brulee, chocolate cake, apple crisp and a cheesecake w/ tequila berry sauce. Even the berry sauce was a bit heavy on the liqour!

Terrible experience at Square Cafe last week: My 7 year old daughter and I went for lunch. I expressed delighted surprise when my server told me that the quiche was vegetarian, and ordered it. It arrived and I thought I saw bacon and mentioned this before I ate it. Server verified that I was mistaken, but shouldn't be "embarrassed" to have asked. He kept assuring me and so I took a bite of what I thought was the bacon. And then I became certain it was bacon. Removed it politely and then told my server. He insisted I was wrong as he had been assured by the "sous chef" there was no bacon in the kitchen at all. Server returns, after some time, and says that it must have been a mistake this time. He leaves. Later he returns and I ask for clarity on the "mistake" - apparently the quiche are made off-site by someone else who miss-labeled the ingredients and left out the bacon on the list. No fuss is made over me or about the situation at all - and I do explain that I have eaten no red meat or pork since 1986. I get the bill and say,"I certainly hope I am not paying for that." I am not the server assures me. BUT we are expected to pay for the rest of the meal - a side salad we shared and my 7 year old's chicken tenders which she barely ate during all of this. I decide to stop by the man I think is the manager on the way out and tell him what happened. He is happy to let me know that he already knows and doesn't really care. He never bothered to even come over to my table and express any sort of concern. This was terrible for me, and I politely told him so, and that I was very disappointed. He didn't care and said, "The only thing that happened here was a simple mistake." Smug and unconcerned. I made it clear I did not think the server was to blame and left him a good tip. I still can't believe I was asked to pay anything at all. I was shocked. Terrible customer service, awful place for anyone with a food allergy or special diet of any kind. I wonder if this was just a terrible manager or if the owner would be just as indifferent? Anyway, the food is much better at Tosca and Caffe Tosca and so many other places.... We need more places in town which are open for lunch so people aren't forced to eat there....

For years, I have been driving passed The Square Cafe and ooh-ing and ah-ing over their menu. I set them on such a pedestal that I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed during my first visit. My boyfriend and I had dinner at The Square Cafe last month, and we weren't as impressed as we thought we'd be. The service was great, and the atmosphere is similar to Tosca down the street (cool, friendly, a bit rustic mixed with modern). The food was fine and cooked well, but I just wasn't WOWed. Definitely a very nice restaurant, but not in my top 10.

Wow - I love this place. Ate their twice in one week. The decor is really classy and comfortable. The service was impeccable - very cheery wait staff. We had lunch one day - pork sandwich was unbelievable. Steak salad was HUGE and very fresh and tasty. We also did Sunday brunch - excellent "breakfast sandwich". The eggs were prepared perfectly. We would have gone back had we had time! Go there - eat - enjoy.

Our evening started with the hostess announcing to us that another party has our table reserved for 7:30pm. Our reservation was for 5:30pm. It seemed that she was implying that we should hurry up and order our food, pay our bill, and get out. She FALSELY claimed that she had told me over the phone that another party was coming at 7:30pm when she, in fact, had not mentioned anything other than that she could give us a table at 5:30pm. My friends and I were all taken back when the hostess was adamant about her claim. It was RUDE. Even if another party was coming, we most likely would have been done within that 2 hour period. The food was fairly good, but many menu items were way too complicated, mixing too many ingredients. Keep it simple and of high quality, I say. It was extremely noisy, too. My friends and I were 2 feet from each other and strained to talk and to hear. I will NOT be going there again.

In brief, I had heard great things about this prior to experiencing it myself last week. Essentially meal was priced slightly higher than expected for a suburban restaurant, without the quality to match. I got the statler chicken which was dry but doused in an extremely rich sauce with tasteless roasted brussel sprouts and a fried potato cake (also doused in rich sauce). On the side, there was a little pool of onion infused olive oil which didn't make sense to me. While the food was overly heavy/rich, the service was slightly shocking. Our waitress seemed like she could benefit from going to hospitality school. Superficially she was pleasant, but when we inquired how the haddock was, she replied, "It's a fish." When asked if she recommended any particular dish on the menu, she basically said she hadn't tried anything and it all depended on what we'd like. Which is fine, but she could've have made a few suggestions. What really got me is that at the end of our meal, she didn't bother to ask us if we were interested in dessert or coffee (or anything else for that matter). We saw the owner putzing around doing random things which I guess was intended to impress guests, BUT he had no expression on his face - as in no smile whatsoever. People have touted that this place is really warm and inviting, but I got the impression that the owner and his staff were a bit stuffy and could afford to be a little more gracious with their smiles and gestures. Nothing over the top or anything. Just an offer for coffee/tea, perhaps a slice of cake or another drink. Definitely not impressed and unfortunately very disappointed because I really wanted to like this place.

The Square Cafe is my go to place to eat out for both lunch and dinner. My husband and I love coming here. I ALWAYS order their fried Calamari app at dinner- it's soooo yummy and nothing like I've had anywhere else. Their food is a mix of comfort food with an Asian flair. They also have really great salads. They serve small and large plates- but a lot of times the small plates are a perfect dinner portion for me. Our meals have always been consistent and delicious, which is why I bring every out of town friend/ family member here to eat. The atmosphere/ ambiance is a classic/ New England look with a fresh twist. Love it!

I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. The atmosphere is perfect whether it's date night or you are getting together with a group of friends, the staff are friendly, professional & incredibly attentive and the food and drinks are excellent. I frequent the Square Cafe and am confident to say i've tried almost everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. The beef tenderloin is my favorite as well as the tuna (rare, of course). I highly recommend starting off with the calamari or the shrimp and vegetable tempura. Both are delicious. The cocktail list is ever changing but i never have a problem finding something to enjoy! The bartenders are wonderful and take good care of those dining at the bar. If your goal is to sit and eat but can't find an open stool, alert whoever is behind the bar and they will make sure to get you into the next open spot. Square is at the top of my favorite restaurants list and I look forward to my next visit.

The dude and I went here for date night last month and I must say I was impressed. Nice atmosphere. Good Service. Great food. We split the Roasted Red & Yellow Beet Salad (so good). I had the Roasted Pork Tenderloin and he had the Pan Seared Mahi Mahi. Both were good. Dessert was a bit of a crap shoot. The Coconut Creme Brulee was bland and not worth the calories. The Carrot Cake was better, but not amazing.

I took my friends to Square and along with them enjoyed one of the best meals l ever ate. We each ordered a beet salad which tasted perfect. The three dinners we ordered: filet mignon, salmon and stuffed pork chop were phenomenal. The desserts: carrot cake and molten chocolate cake were divine. I would also like to give kudos to our server Amy who did a superb job as well. My friend's who dined at Square for the first time were truly impressed. My one word if you're undecided: GO

Another delicious evening. Short ribs fell apart at the touch and seared tuna(my husband's favorite) did not disappoint. Made an impromptu dash and got a short notice reservation tonight. Great service, not too loud and crowded at 6:00. Got in and out and enjoyed the experience.

Square Cafe is a sophisticated, classy "neighborhood joint" that allows you to have a foodie night without venturing into the city. It has a comfortable decor with lots of banquette seating, as well as table that can be put together, and a small bar. The location, right in the center, is easily accessible and there is ample nearby parking. Hingham has a great social scene among the thirty+ somethings, and while I wouldn't call it hip, it has a great set of customers. Thursday through Sunday are packed, and the only downside is that it does get very noisy. Also, reservations on these nights are recommended. The food is great! No too simple, but not too over the top. I always get the vegetarian plate, even though I am not vegetarian. The chef puts together a different selection of four things every time, and it is amazing, especially the veggie tempura that is made to look like a club sandwich. The square Cafe is perfect for a casual night out or special occasion, and is worth the trip!

I recently ate here with my boyfriend and his foodie parents. They have taken me to many restaurants in several cities over the past couple of years and, I have to say, this one is in the running for the absolute best. We started with mussels (thai style - spicy and I am pretty sure coconut milk was involved = you can't go wrong!) and I ordered the Statler Chicken Breast for dinner. It was the best chicken I have ever eaten. I ended the meal with the carrot cake dessert, which was also delicious. The portions are the perfect size - we ordered a lot of food, but didn't leave too stuffed... but there was enough food to share with each other. I recommend sharing desserts at the end, though. One per each would be wayyy too much. I'll be back to this place!

I agree. This is definitely one of the best places to eat on the South Shore. I've tried several specials and lots of things off their seasonal menu -- I've never had a bad meal or a bad time. Whether hosting family gathering or dinner for two, the staff at Square Cafe is always accommodating and helpful. If you like tuna, the Yellow Fin Tuna Two Ways is great starter. Other good choices are the Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura or Pan Seared Jonah Crab & Lobster Cakes appetizers. For the main course, I recommend the Roasted Red & Yellow Beet salad followed by either the The Grilled #1 Yellow fin Tuna or Spice Rubbed Statler Chicken Breast. They're both equally delicious. And right now, the strawberry rhubarb crisp is a must have for desert! With great food and with an upscale atmosphere that's anything but stuffy, Square Cafe is a good choice for any night of the week.

I think this is THE place to eat on the South Shore. As good as any Boston New American restaurant. It is sort of adorably crowded in decor. Reservations are a must. The menu changes, so check it out online. Its the kind of place I would love a guy to take me too for a special dinner.

Just returned from dinner at Square Cafe and have this bit of advice: if you have young kids, stay far away from this restaurant. Maybe I'll feel differently in the morning, but I couldn't be more displeased with my experience and it all comes down to the waitress I had. From the moment we sat down for an early dinner at 6pm, this particular waitress (thin blonde woman) couldn't have been more transparent with her disgust for our kids. I do recognize that dealing with kids isn't for everyone, but when I drop a few hundred dollars on a meal, I expect to feel welcome - not like my presence is an imposition. You'll see that in the past I've yelped positively about Square Cafe. I stand by my assessment that the food is quite good, though small portions. Also, Patty (full disclosure that she's known my family well since the Tosca days) has a great way about her and did a really nice job with the restaurant. It's because I've been such a fan over the years that I was so unbelievably disappointed. So two things I'd recommend: first, that Patty takes a closer look at her wait staff (aforementioned waitress specifically); and secondly, that until a change is made, readers who are looking for a family-friendly dining experience skip Square Cafe and head to Tosca.

A great spot for lunch. It's classy, but with a welcoming (almost quaint...) vibe. It's instantly apparent that many of the diners are regulars, as the hostess greets almost every party by name when they walk through the door. The salads and sandwiches are all fantastic. Portions are large by lunch standards, so you won't leave hungry. Yes, it's more expensive than some other local lunch spots, but well worth it!

Some co-workers suggested I visit the Square Cafe for a working lunch and I was glad I took their advice. It's a nice, casual spot with very good food. My lunching companion and I both opted for salads - mine was the grilled chicken salad, his was the steak salad. I was not disappointed with mine and especially thought the dried papaya was a neat touch. Next time I have to meet someone for a working lunch, I'll be back!

I have been here several times and the food was exceptional. This time it was equally good but the service was not great. Ordered the duck and it came to the table minus the crispy polenta. ( No one checking the plates?)The polenta arrived quite a whlle later with no apologies just a "here's your polenta" We had a party of 13 and our entrees were delivered in three waves producing a situation where we had to choose to have our food get cold or have some people eating while others had nothing. Our waitress appeared annoyed most of the service and her annoyance seemed to peak when we lingered at our table after she left the check. The restaurant was busy but not full and there were no people waiting for our table. All in all we had a great time because of the food and the great company. Great service is just as important as the food. It was not bad enough to prevent me from returning but it dropped a little on my list.

Been twice: great food and friendly service both times. It's not cheap, but neither is it outrageously expensive, especially considering what you get. We were four people, shared two appetizers and two salads, ate their small portions of entrés and drank a couple of large bottles of sparkling water: $142 before tip. We were totally sated. The calamari and crab cake appetizers and the beet salad are great. Never had better scallops. I thought the salmon was OK, although someone in my party thought it was to die for. Best food i've had on the South Shore, and at least as good as something like No. 9 Park in Boston. The ambiance is a bit too formal for my liking, but I'm a pretty informal kinda guy and it seems to fit Hingham. As others have mentioned, get reservations.

Last Saturday my wife and I decided to eat out but we had made no reservation arrangements. We'd been very satisfied lunch customers of The Square but had never had dinner there. We walked in and were instantly greeted. When I confessed that we had no reservation instead of the ill-concealed frown one often gets when this confession is made, the host seated us at an excellent table for two and seemed very pleased that we'd dropped in. Our waitress was both gracious and friendly. She had a full command of the specials right down to the specific treatments of each dish. My wife spilled half of her water. The wait staff instantly responded by clearing everything on the table and reset us with full table cloths and nappery and reacted to our minor crisis with a smile. My wife ordered the Vegetarian Composition and I had the Chili Seared Yellow Noodles. Each selection was absolutely superb. The vegetables were prepared to perfection and served on china that had four separate sections for the selections. My wife said that it was apparent that a rare knowledge of excellent vegetable preparaqtion went into the dish and could not decide which item she liked the most. My selection of Chili Seared Noodles was fantastic. The item had a distinct Asian tilt which was the perfect approach to mtake with this dish. Each element plus the sauce magnified the pleasure the meal gave me. I would order it again in a heart beat. The decor is warm and comforting. A modest sized bar would be a great place to congregate to watch a game on the low-volumn TV. The wait staff is amont the best I have ever encountered. Even the bus boy was familier with the selections on thje menu. I glanced at the kitchenb and could see that the Chef had her eye on every dish that left the kitchen, even stopped one serving to tinker with the presentation. The Square has become one of our "go-to" places and can compete with almost every restaurant we have been to in downtown Boston. This place is truly wonderful.

What a great place. Consistently excellent food. John the bartender is really a draw, too. He is really good at what he does, and there's always a delicious seasonal cocktail to be had. Great place to relax. And I don't think I've ever hung out at the bar without having some friendly banter with neighbors at the next stool.

Although it saddens me in some ways, my husband and I agree that after dining here many, many times, we will not return. First, the good: This has been my favorite restaurant in the Boston area, and we have made it a point to go *every* time we come to visit family, which is at least 4 times a year. The food is the draw - the calamari appetizer is the best and I have never been disappointed in the entrees. Its Asian influenced American fare is interesting and always well prepared. The salmon salad, scallops, pork tenderloin, steak - all are recommended. Now, the bad: The past two times my husband and I have gone we have been treated like second class citizens by the host. At our most recent visit, we arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation and were informed that no table was available, although the one closest to the host stand (and front door) was open. Having worked in restaurants, I assumed it was reserved for another party, and we didn't expect to be seated early anyway. As our reservation hour approached and passed, another couple came in, and were greeted warmly by the host, who asked where they preferred to sit - at the table beneath the host stand (still available) or one by the window in the middle of the restaurant. Not surprisingly, they chose the latter. After the host sat them, he waved to us, and sat us at - you guessed it! - the table that had been available since we had arrived. After motioning us to the table he walked away - without giving us menus or saying a word to us. Our waitress (Jeanne, who was great!) came over after about 5 minutes and noticed we were still sitting there without menus and scrambled to find some. The rest of the evening was fine, with some minor annoyances - such as waiting a long time for our drinks, not being offered bread until after the appetizer had arrived, and having to stare at another patron's tweed-clad derriere as she leaned between our table and the next, gossiping with her friends. Had this been an isolated incident, we would probably return. However, we had a similar experience the previous time we went, as did our family during another visit. I understand catering to local and frequent patrons. But enough's enough - they've lost this non-local repeat customer.

I enjoyed it more the first time. This time had two appetizers, the tuna two ways (seared and tartare) was very good and we loved the homemade sesame crisps, but the flatbread was severely lacking flavor and seasoning (the menu said it was sausage, caramelized onions and fontina, but I never found any sausage and it was just sweet and bland-nothing to offset the onions). My aunt enjoyed the flat-iron steak salad. I had the lemongrass shrimp salad and the shrimp were okay but again lacking seasoning. My aunt thought they tasted strange, like lobster. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't order them again. The warm carrot cake was delicious and my aunt loved her coconut creme brulee. I will go again, but I was disappointed in this visit.

This is definitely the best dining on the South Shore!! Where to begin... My girlfriend and I wanted to go out for a special dinner (no occasion really just an excuse to get a little dressed up) so this place was an obvious choice. When the waitress brought over the calamari she said it was the best she ever had- a bold statement...but she was absolutely right!! Excellent flavor, large pieces with grapefruit, papaya and Thai dressing, simply amazing! I had the Korean rubbed flank steak, and I wouldn't normally order flank steak at a restaurant like this, but it was delicious and full of flavor, and the wasabi mashed potato was also fantastic. My girlfriend ordered the pork tenderloin (which I was originally going to order until someone recommended the flank). It was well prepared but not as flavorful as we hoped. The waitress was very friendly, offered suggestions, was there when we needed her and stayed away at the right times. We had a few of the martinis (the Mai Thai, the Pomegranate and the X rated). Definitely try the X rated martini- strong yet very flavorful. Apps are $9-15, small plates about $20 and large plates $20-32. Well worth the price, check it out! They take reservations, definitely recommended on the weekends.

very good food and a nice room. i've been a few times for dinner and once for lunch. for dinner they provide small plate and full entree options. it is a good deal for me as my wife is fully into the shared dinner experience so an appetizer or two and a couple of small plates usually works out. the menu has a local/fresh with a few twists vibe to it. the wine list is good as well. unfortunately you will potentially be on your own when navigating it as the waitstaff often does not have a good command of it. make sure to check out the desert menu if you are into stuff like cobbler as they always have some cool variation on that theme.

I thought the food was very good and they have a good wine menu. It was nice and relaxed with great dishes that you would expect to find in a Boston restaurant. I had the pork loin and it was spectacular. Calamari was also good. The dishes on the menu have a lot of interesting/unusual flavors that work really well together. Decor and atmosphere was really nice. Only thing that I didn't love is that it is really loud in there. If you're looking for a quiet and romantic meal this might not be the place.

Whenever my husband and I have the chance to go out for a nice dinner we have a hard time choosing anywhere other than Square Cafe. We've dined there at least a dozen times and have never been disappointed. We usually start out with a cocktail at the bar. John is a friendly, knowledgeable bartender who is happy to make drink or menu suggestions. We have never been anything but pleased with our food. The menu is pricey, but worth every penny. Appetizers and entrees are fantastic and desserts are delicious. My husband loves the tuna tartare two ways, and orders it every time we go there. The burger is great as are the short ribs. This place is a rare find on the South Shore. If you are looking for a fine dining experience without having to travel to Boston, Square Cafe is worth checking out.

I have eaten here many, many times since it opened ten years ago, both lunch and dinner, at a table and at the bar, and everything about the Square Cafe is consistently TERRIFIC. The food is delicious, the service is friendly and impeccable and the manager, Mark, seems to have the seating process down to a science -- I have never once had to wait for my table (including on a recent night when my husband and I arrived without a reservation (but I don't recommend going without a reservation, the restaurant is always crowded, even at lunch)). Also, either Mark or the owner always stops by the table during the meal to find out how everything is going -- I have observed that they constantly monitor the restaurant to make sure all is well. It is very clear that they care very much about what they are doing and this attention to detail shines through in the quality of the food and service. This is my go-to place for a nice night out!

  • Ashley S.

Basing my review on the maybe 15 times I've been blown away there, this place is 5-star in my book. Only once was I TERRIBLY disappointed, but onto that later. The decor is wonderful in here, perfect for a winter night with nice low lighting and comfortable seating. I've had some amazing cocktails here as well, love the X-rated. The menu changes fairly frequently, but the meat dishes are cooked to perfection with wonderful complementary sauces. Have to say the desserts have never been my favorite, but you don't really need one after the large-portioned main courses (even the small plates). Wait staff overall all are very knowledgeable and friendly, especially one gentleman who seems to know every wine on the menu. I ate lunch here with my mom one day and was asked how my sandwich was (I had left 3/4 of it on my plate). When I said that the sauces were not my favorite, the waiter quickly took the meal off our bill without so much as a complaint from us and pointed out that they are constantly experimenting to find new dishes. As for the one bad experience, it was the night before New Year's eve this year, and VERY crowded. We were seated in a section with the only obnoxious waitress I've ever encountered there. My mom's ginger cocktail was made to taste like a cheap screwdriver I wouldn't have even drunk in college and when we pointed out (politely I might add) that it didn't taste anything like the ginger one she had ordered on many previous occasions, she snapped back at us that OF COURSE it was made the same and huffed off with it without giving my mom the time to order anything else. Then when the meal came, I could have sworn that she had gave my mother a ruined meal on purpose. Her medium rare meat was cooked to almost blackened inedible levels, and had none of the sauce that mine was covered in (we had the same meal). Her vegetables were overcooked and basically the whole meal was no better than high school cafeteria food. Suffice to say, my parents have not been back since that experience, even though it used to be an almost weekly excursion for them. Hope that was an isolated incident. Come to think of it, we probably should have complained about our waitress, but my mother was just upset we left quickly after finishing our meal. Here's hoping she's no longer in their employ!

My favorite restaurant on the South Shore. The decor is great, lighting comfortable, and food never disappoints. I would highly recommend the calamari as a starter. If you go for lunch the burger is out of this world. I have eaten just about everything on the menu and with the exception of the pork sandwich at lunch it is all great. We mostly go for dinner and although not a cheap eat the meal is worth it. From start to finish, good wine, apps, entrees and GREAT desserts. Make sure to save room. The wait staff can be a little on/off, but them usually pull it together. The little French waiter is the only one I try to steer clear of, because his attutide is unappealing to say the least. But the rest of the staff is happy to accomodate and curteous. They have GREAT options for kids as well. Grilled chicken with mashed potatos or other vegetables... they are very open to making something work to keep them happy.

Excellent sea food always; the chef adds interesting flavors and every thing is cooked perfectly. Try the specials! Tried and true appetizers, calamari or tuna two-ways, are great to share. I prefer eating at the bar - cozy and very friendly. This is a lovely spot in a real downtown -an oasis- on the South Shore.

Over the last year, the Square began to deliver on the promise of its menu. That was not always the case in the past, and so this downtown Hingham spot now gets top marks. Had the Porcini & Black Truffle Ravioli as well as the Seared Local Sea Scallops a few times and at each sitting the flavors were both outstanding and consistent. Service is very good, and the restaurant itself is cozy and upscale without being stuffy.

On my list of best restaurants on the South Shore! The service is always top notch, attentive and suggestions for pairing great. I always order the Tuna here and have never been disappointed, fresh, never frozen and the chips that come with the lunch portion are addictive! Now if they would just add a brunch to their mix!
