Great menu, great value! With a wide array of creative house made breakfast & lunch specialty items, be prepared to wait in line! Sugar Magnolias is very popular. Some of our favorites include: Eggs Benedict, Eggs "Flo" (swap spinach & tomato for the traditional Canadian Bacon ), & the Crabcake "Bene" (swap their large Lump Crab Cakes for the bacon). Eggs are always cooked to order, in this case w/the ingredients listed, placed atop a nooky Jumbo English Muffin & sauced in a rich, lemony Hollandaise. Comfort food at its best! For $8-10, it's a great value. (Almost all breakfast items come w/toast & home fries.) Made-to-order omelettes French Toast Sticks Pineapple Fritters served fresh pineapple & brown sugar dipping sauce For $8 their (Signature) Mediterranean Salad is a yummy smorgasboard on your plate full of hummus, tabbouleh, roasted eggplant, grape leaves, red onion, feta, lemon & pita bread served over mixed greens with house made balsamic vinaigrette. Roasted Eggplant is another great bet w/mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, red onion, goat cheese & eggplant served with balsamic vinaigrette, $9 Fattoush comes w/romaine, fresh mint, tomato, cucumber, carrot, radicchio, toasted pita chips & red onion tossed with garlic & mint vinaigrette. They also sell their NEW LEBANESE/PITA BREAD: 1/2 DOZEN $3.00 HUMMUS: 1/2 LB $2.50 - 1LB $5.00 TOUM (LEBANESE GARLIC SPREAD): 1/2 LB $3.00 - 1LB $6.00 Honestly, no matter who's dining, we always leave here very satisfied. A great value. Beer, wine, & special cocktails CLOSED MONDAYS sugarmags.com udine4less.com/sugarmags

Amazing benedicts ( crab cake especially,) porridge and pineapple fritters are to die for! Get there early it gets crowded fast. Seats by the door are subject to the weather and impolite peoples butts. Also, they do not seat incomplete parties.

Oh heavenly frittata. You are a beautiful baked omelette with tons of garlic inside you. I am salivating as I write this.... Veggie omelette, I like you, but I don't love you. I'm leaving you for the heavenly frittata. It's true. It's not me, it's you. You're just not as good. My oh my, you pineapple fritters. You are sweet, but you do not make me cringe... I like that. Georgia French Toast... you're not my type. I don't have a sweet tooth like that... nor would I allow myself to indulge in something that would just go straight to my hips. You taste like pure sugar. I love this place. Really. Good coffee. I stick to the egg stuff mostly, because they do it well. The frittata is PERFECT... but not if you don't LOVE garlic.... AND NOW THEY SERVE BEER & WINE!!! MIMOSAS FOR BREAKFAST!! LOVE!

We never had a chance to eat here because the wait was so long. Date: 6/12/2011 We arrive at 11:00AM. Husband goes to park the car and I head in to give our names. There is no hostess of any kind to be found. Waitstaff are rushing around. I step up to the hostess counter and finally a woman approaches. She doesn't look at me but to her cell phone where she checks for missed calls/unanswered messages. I say to her, "are you taking names?" She says, "Yes, how many in your party?" I say, "How long is the wait?" She says without hesitation, "45 Minutes." I think for a moment and then remember the sign outside the door that said 'We're closing at 12 today- sorry for any convenience.' So, it's 11 AM, she tells me there's a 45 min wait, and they're closing at 12? How is this possible. Why would she even bother to take our names? "Forget it," I tell her. I head outside to wave my husband back to tell him we need to go somewhere else. I don't want to wait 45 minutes for breakfast just to be rushed out so they can close. The hostess woman wasn't very nice-- very poor first impression. We then head to Sailor Stans... yelp.com/biz/sailor-stan…

Carrot Cake Pancakes with Maple Cream Cheese Butter. Crab Cake Benedict on Corn Bread! I want to try the whole menu! So good. Long waits on the weekends but worth it. Crowded setting. Wish they were open longer on the weekend as opposed to during the week. This seems a little backwards to me.

Sugar Magnolia's is a beautiful brunch restaurant on Main Street in Gloucester, only a few blocks from the beach. From what I understand, there is almost always a wait but I usually count that as a good thing - it means that the food is good enough that people are willing to do so. We only waited about 5-10 minutes for a table. In Philadelphia, the equivalent restaurant would be more like a 30 minute wait on a weekend morning - so stop complaining! As mentioned in numerous other reviews, there is an extensive array of Eggs Benedict options on the menu from sweet to savory. My dining partner ordered one and the whole plate was delicious. I ordered buttermilk pancakes which were unfortunately not so great - they are SUPER thick and were quite dry and crumbly in the center. I later learned that this is the typical style of pancakes in the area, but it is not really to my liking. In the future, I will stick to their specialties when it comes to ordering. The coffee was delicious. Service was friendly.

You'll benefit from fitting more bene in your belly. The problem with Sugar Magnolia is the choice. Not that the menu is overly large, but it all sounds delicious. Thus a capacity for more than one variety of eggs benedict is recommended*. From a non-blind sample of three dishes, I found a statistically significant trend for delicosocity. Levels were such that the 20-minute wait for a table was instantly forgotten. I tried: - Crabcake bene. Extremely rich crab cake, runny poached egg and tonnes of hollandaise on an English muffin. I think I would have struggled to eat both servings. Though it would have been a happy struggle. - "Irish" bene. The usual egg'n'hollandaise on corn-beef hash and cornbread. Fantastic, as were the slightly spicy homefries. - French toast. I was past capacity by this point, so may not be able to fairly critique the quality. It was sweet. It wasn't the cheapest brunch I've had ($30 for two of us, with coffee), but I didn't need to eat again for a week, so it's clearly good value. *Portions are large, so this is best achieved by swapping out with someone else. Preferably someone from your party.

Oh how I wish this place was in San Diego! Such a cool place and the food is amazing! My husband and I spent our vacation in Boston. We have family there and friends in Gloucester. I love Gloucester! We spent our last day there at Sugar Magnolia's. We sat at the cute window seat and I was so excited to try this place out. I ordered the veggie omelet and shared one slice of the honey-ganola coated french toast with my husband. WOW! This stuff was delicious!! My omelet was really good, but the french toast was amazing! It was soft with a slightly crunchy exterior. Sweet, but not overpowering. The potatoes that came with my omelet were perfectly cooked too. I ordered an iced chai latte and it was really tasty! I am so picky about chai, but I was totally satisfied. I would just suggest asking for little ice to maximize the amount of chai you get. Service was friendly, but not very fast. We weren't in a hurry, but it seemed to take a while and we were there on a Thursday, mid-day. The place wasn't full, so it wasn't because they were busy. Not a big complaint, but just something to be aware of. I wish I could eat there now! When I go back to Gloucester, I will definitely be back!!

Sunday's Boston.com had a list of great brunch places in the Boston area. Sugar Mags was on the list. Being that we were in the mood for some great brunch, we headed 11 miles up the highway to this little place in downtown Gloucester is a real treat. The buttermilk pancakes were fluffy and seemed to havea touch of heaven in the mix. The eggs and toast with side of bacon and home fries, hit the spot. There was about a 20-30 minute wait at noon (Sunday) but in all reality it took us about 10 minutes to be seated. If your looking for a good brunch spot on the weekends, check out Sugar Mags!

This is a hot breakfast ticket! Make sure that you get there early, about 1/2 hour before you want to eat, as there will most definitely be a wait. As far as breakfast goes, you can't get any better. Good coffee, great muffins, and a variety of sweet and savory dishes to satisfy your cravings. I had a veggie/cheese scramble, which was great because it had all my favorite vegetables. I could only eat about half of it. I really want to try out the pancakes or a waffle next time.

Good food, LONG wait, and inconsiderate waitresses. We have ate here a few different times when we visit Gloucester. Each time we have the very same experience. The food is good but I draw the line at taking nearly 2 hours to eat breakfast! I will say the food is good, BUT the service is poor to say the least. Regulars are given seating preferences and visitors wait the promised 10-15 minutes that really is a 30 minute wait. When we arrived today 75% of the tables were waiting for food, no table opening up soon. Our waitress was quick to take our order (even if we were not ready), and the food took 40 minutes to arrive and as soon as we finished forget about coffee refills. We ask three separate times for coffee before we were refilled and then it was only because we explained only one wanted a refill! The refill was pulled from the thermos not from the regular coffee machine (so we leave sooner).

Came here just a little after 11... just missed breakfast which was what I'd been hoping to get :( Since we had paid for the meter parking already outside, we figured we'd just stick around and have lunch here anyways- we'd read so many good breakfast reviews that we thought maybe their lunch couldn't be too bad. I had the pb honey banana bacon sandwich which turned out to be good.. Not spectacular or anything. Also tried a banana walnut muffin, but it was really weird. It was like eating cornbread. I don't really have a problem with cornbread, but it's just not what I was expecting or wanting since I'd ordered a muffin. Prices were a little higher for the quality of food served, but maybe that's just lunch. I hear breakfast is supposed to be amazing. Lunch is a different story though unfortunately... not that special.

Just went there on Friday morning before hitting the beach. We got a table right away, and our server was super nice and attentive. I ordered an egg white omlette with spinach, tomato and feta which was SO delicious. The serving sizes there are HUGE!!! My boyfriend enjoyed his breakfast as well. He got the buttermilk pancakes. I tried a bite or two, and we both thought they tasted awesome. I will def go back there, everything was very tasty. We also really liked the artwork that is displayed on the walls there. This is a really cute breakfast place. It's very clean, and the staff is great. I will say it did get pretty packed when we were leaving, so we were happy we were one of the first people there.

Sugar Magnolias is one of the best breakfast places that I've ever been to. I haven't ever been to lunch there so my opinion is only regarding breakfast, but the carrot cake pancakes are absolutely delicious. The maple cream cheese butter is like a perfect almost frosting on these pancakes. The french toast might be the best I've had. Prices are slightly higher than other breakfast locations but the quality of food and atmosphere here is top notch.

This is our favorite breakfast and lunch place in Gloucester. Its reliable, creative fare in a great space downtown. The Thai chicken salad is addictive and there are many other fabulous salad choices (fattoush, smith and Stilton, buffalo chix, etc.). Great sandwiches (Mediterranean steak sandwich is a fave), too. Breakfast is heavenly! Hard to make the sweet vs. savory decision. The best plan is to split with your dining companion to enjoy the best of both worlds. I recommend the goatie omelet (goat cheese, tomato, caramelized onions) and either the carrot pancakes with cream cheese butter (amazing) or the almond joy pancakes with chocolate chips and coconut. Georgia's toast with chocolate chips and marshmallow fluff stuffed cinnamon french toast is an over-the-top treat that is worth the indulgence.

I'm not a big breakfast person. I end up being hungry for lunch fairly quickly after breakfast no matter how much I eat. So I often don't see the point of pigging out on a BIG breakfast because at the end of the day I've ended up eating too much food. Isn't that horribly pragmatic and boring? Well, Sugar Magnolia's is NEITHER pragmatic nor boring. I stopped in this morning uncharacteristically and ordered myself eggs, hash and cornbread. YUM, YUM and YUM! Food was hot, fresh and delicious. Portion was WAY to big for me to eat more than 1/3 of it. So, I took the rest to go. I had a second breakfast for lunch. It was even better with Sriracha hot sauce on the eggs for the lunch course. I beat the crowd arriving at 8:15 on a weekday summer morning. An hour later the place was packed! Service was a bit spacey but it was the AM...and I'm not very alert in the AM either so it's easy for me to overlook that. Filter coffee is "New England" brand...not my favorite. BUT they do serve espresso based coffees and the aroma coming from the machine they pull the shots from was amazing. If I indulge again I'd get a capuccino or latte instead. This was my secong time there for breakfast. The first time was more than 5 years ago. This visit is entirely responsible for the way in which I eat oatmeal to this day! About 5 years ago I arrived at Sugar Mags after watching the sun come up at Good Harbor Beach. It was a bit chilly and being the practical breakfast person I ordered oatmeal for my breakfast. It was the most interesting preparation I'd ever experienced (to date)! Covered in nuts, dried fruit, bananas, coconut...it was so delicious. Now, when I eat oatmeal it's so fun to rummage through my cubbards looking for interesting 'toppings' to make my oatmeal tastier or more nutritious! Thanks Sugar Mags!

To me, Sugar Magnolia is overrated. Lunch is nothing special, and breakfast is overpriced. I always get the feeling that this establishment is simply trying too hard to be hip - and relevant. You often see the newest ingredient everyone is raving about showing up on the menus. The issue is that the chefs really don't know how to prepare it! I leave here after spending twenty dollars without feeling satisfied with the meal. People rave about the quesadillas - but really, how hard is it to make? Anything here can easily be made at home.

.I always hated the Grateful Dead. Those people were freaks and I sir am no freak. That is until my junior year in college when I was dragged to a Dead show , fed something that wasn't a Portobello IF you know what I mean, and spent the night jamming to the Dead and crawling in and out of tents and basically having what amounted to a spiritual awakening. I had heard about this little Bohemian place in Gloucester called Sugar Mags and again was picturing a patchouli smelling freak zone and until seeing it won Best of Boston 2008 had no desire to hike up there just for eggs. Well much like my opinion of the Dead back in the day I was equally as wrong about this awesome restaurant. My little angel had been watching the Phantom Gourmet (against my wishes) and had gotten the idea of just the two of us going on a restaurant road trip and despite my contempt for the Andelman bro's this turned out to be an excellent idea for some quality time with the best girl on earth. Sugar Magnolia's is on main street in Gloucester. If you've never been there it is a eclectic collection of very interesting, privately owned mom & pop stores, bars, galleries and restaurants. I love it. It's fun to wander in and out of stores never knowing what fun item you might come upon to add to your collection. There is an amazing joke shop that sells more than 10 types of fake poop, rubber chickens, every kind of practical joke you can imagine, magic tricks and more. It was right up my alley. My point is the ambiance alone is worth the drive and you're ten seconds away from the harbor where you can walk around the bay up to the park at the point. It's beautiful and no where near as commercial or crowded as Rockport during the summer. I love it! The restaurant is full of art and has a counter space you can eat or if you choose there are plenty of tables. It was busy for brunch but the wait was nothing. They have some great things on the menu you don't see anywhere else. They had pineapple fritters with a cinnamon dipping sauce. We ordered the crab cake benedict, the lobster and herb cream cheese omelette and a short stack of blueberry pancakes. There were about 6 different types of eggs benedict and tons of omelette choices. The coffee was fresh, the service was perfect and I can't wait to go back for Mother's Day. This place is a north shore diamond in my opinion. It is also close to the beaches, like Wingaersheik, Cranes, Singing and more. To sum it up: Go- check -it -out! It's D-licious.

Delicious brunch!! The place is small and there was about a 40 minute wait at 10am on a Sunday but it was worth it. Iced coffee came fast and there was a lot to choose from on the menu. Lots of omlettes and pancake/french toast options. I chose The Goatie omlette and I added ham to it. It was huge!! The caramelized onions were fantastic inside. The only critique I would make of this place is that the need to upgrade their toast. They served us plain old, grocery store wheat toast. Definitely not what I was expecting from a place like this. The Almond Joy french toast and Carrot Cake pancakes looked unbelievable but I just can't do sweet breakfasts like that!

I have eaten here numerous times; if you arrive before 8/8:30 you won't have to wait during the off season. I rate this highly because I don't eat the typical huge breakfast and appreicate their large menu selection offers decent oatmeal and breakfast sandwiches such as egg, arugula, goat cheese with fig jam! Don't worry the classics are here as well. Large portions. Consistent quality.

Uhm ... like, yum! Hate to just say it like that, but Sugar Magnolia's just can't be beat. Incredible breakfast ... fantastic service ... great little location there ... friendly, fun and delicious all in one. Go there and get some a that there porridge ... didn't really think I'd like it ... but jeez ... that's something delicious!

By far one of the best breakfast places I have ever been too. I got the Carrot Pancakes with the Maple Cream Cheese Butter....'nuff said I think. We also got the Pineapple Fritters to share, this came with a brown sugar sauce, again "nuff said. I do not eat eggs but even this place made me want to try my husbands meal it looked so excellent. The wait staff is awesome and the decor is great.

Wow--this is one of the best breakfast places I've ever been to. SO impressive. For only $10.50, I got coffee, sweet bread toast (it's worth the extra 50 cents to get sweet bread or cinnamon-raisin toast), delicious home fries, and the best scramble I've ever eaten (just spinach, goat cheese, and caramelized onion--but somehow, the way it was cooked made it taste amazing. The person seating us was kind of rude (in that no-nonsense Boston way), but our server was terrific. Friendly, helpful, didn't hover, and took my heavily-modified order with nary a blink or a sigh. If you're ever near Gloucester, *definitely* make this a stop. The friend I ate with said that it was the best breakfast she'd ever had, and it was definitely in my top 5 of all time.

We read about this place before our trip to MA, and were so glad we tried it! There were 4 of us, and we all tried something different. The coffee really did live up to its "best in Gloucester" status. The Carrot Cake pancakes had to be everyone's favorite. Maybe the best pancakes I've ever tasted. The pineapple fritters were also a favorite at our table. The Greasy Pole was yummy but HUGE! Hash was delish. Really no complaints, except that we all left with tighter pants! Great food, fun spot, and amazing coffee = best breakfast in Gloucester! =)

Well, once again, I tried a great place after I read all the reviews on YELP. I also enlisted the help of a friend who had actually eaten here many times. One of my newest friends and I trekked down to Gloucester over Columbus Day weekend. I was not dissappointed. As some of the reviews here state, the coffee is an absolute YUM. I tried the veggie omelette. OMG. Everything was just so fresh and had a choice of cheese, which my choice was monterey jack. Usually I drown my omelettes in ketchup........but I wanted to savor every last bite of this omelette completely naked. Some people had to wait for a table, but my friend and I opted for the counter service. This place will be another one of my faves in Gloucester. Thumbs up.

I want to love this place, I really do. This is my third time back for breakfast and I am underwhelmed. My omelet was over cooked so it was dry and dense. I came specifically for a latte which was outstanding last time and the machine was down. Coffee was a bit bitter, but strong, how I like it. The waitress had one under her breath comment after my husband asked for his coffee cup back which was half full. Not necessary. I think you should stick with the pancakes and forgo the eggs. Very average.

First, let me say, I am not a breakfast person. I prefer sleep over any morning meals. That being said, I often find myself in the company of people who NEED breakfast. Anyways...Sugar Magnolia. Delicious. I had the carrot cake pancakes (which were huge) with maple cream cheese butter. Does it get any more delectable than that? Well, yes it does. As a lover of potatoes in any form, I ordered the home fries with trepidation (they are called homies on the menu- so I was kinda hoping the waitress would forget so I could say "yo where my homies at?" thus solidifying my status of lame white girl) . Well she didn't forget, and moreover, the home fries were awesome! There was a bit of a wait but it was entirely worth it. The food was served quick and hot and the place has a very friendly atmosphere. Tip: The short stack (2) was colossal and could probably be split. For $6, why not? Order some sides and you will be all set. Seriously though, I usually need to eat every 2 hours. I went SEVEN hours after this meal.

Wonderful breakfast experience! We went with a party of six and got a table right away (though they filled up fast shortly after we sat down.) The pancakes are HUGE, about an inch thick and fill the plate completely. Carrot cake pancake and Almond Joy were super delicious, coffee refills were offered frequently, the hash was fresh and tasty and came with grilled cornbread, yum! No trouble to get soy milk for coffee or to leave cheese out of an omelet. Excellent meal!

Checked out this placed based on the reviews below. The food was fabulous. We tried the Goatie Omelet (w/ goat cheese and mushrooms) and another with veggies and Swiss. On the recommendation of our server we also took a crack at the Hash and Eggs and a side of carrot cake pancakes (----to die for). Our wait wasn't too bad (about 10 min) at 12:00 on a Sunday and the waitstaff were efficient and helpful. Only minor issue was that it took a while for our food to come out.....but it was definitely worth the wait! We will go back. They also serve lunch during the week... the breakfast makes me want to come back and try it... Great place to take visitors from out of town.

Hands-down, the best breakfast in Gloucester. In brief, I'm holding on to that fifth star until: - The prices fall just a hair or two. - They do something about that awful faux-homey decor. - A few of the tables find their way out and, thereby, the too-near proximity of one group to the next is corrected. - I can drive by the joint without humming The Grateful Dead, wishing I knew all of the words (even the complete chorus would suffice). The menu is creative and generally phenomenal. All sorts of crazy omelets and, better yet, carrot-cake pancakes. The serving sizes are pretty generous and the staff is rather friendly. I kinda wish Sugar Magnolia could shake that unfortunate townie feel in the way that Alchemy managed to but can look past all the 'Hey Benny, how's ya motha' to get a gourmet and unexpected breakfast.

Decent breakfast, but not worth all the hype in my opinion. Having said that, the other five people I was with loved it. The pineapple fritters were really nothing special. Unique presentation that lacked any real taste. I had the Irish Benedict and a side of Linguisa Sausage. The linguisa really was outstanding - cut in half and grilled nicely. The Irish Benny had 2 grilled slices of a corn bread loaf which was flavorful and sweet. I was expecting it under the home made hash (which had carrot shavings in it), poached eggs (under done) and Hollandaise sauce (cold but flavorful). The potatoes were warm and a nice companion to the breakfast. Others had the steak and eggs (the steak looked perfectly cooked), carrot cake pancakes which they loved and I tasted and didn't think much of after all the build-up, Georgia's Toast (graham coated, marshmallow and chocolate stuffed French toast) which everyone but me tried and said was great (note: syrup not needed) and the Goatie Omelet which was a big hit even with its contents spread unevenly through the omelet. Service was great. I'll go back again if I'm in the area, I want breakfast and don't go in expecting the best breakfast ever. Not worth the 45 minute drive we made.

Today was my first visit to this place at the recommendation of one of my best friends, who said on his first visit recently he experienced "the best breakfast I've ever had," which was the crab cakes Benedict. After hearing this, both my girlfriend and I were itching to go. Now I've tried out a lot of coffee shops in Gloucester, with George's being my favorite, but I have to say the breakfast menu of Sugar Mags is the most delicious I've seen in town. So, let's begin... My girlfriend and I arrived this Sunday morning around 10:30 to find the place packed and about three groups waiting to be seated. The hostess saw us come in, but had to seat another party first and then never came back to take our name. Another couple came in after us and walked up to the hostess stand where the hostess came up to take their name, which was when I promptly stepped up and said we had been waiting there first. We were then told the wait was going to be 20 minutes, although we ended up getting seated in less than 10 minutes. While we were waiting we noticed that the couple after us had asked for large paper cups to help themselves to a variety of brewed coffees along the wall. The option to drink coffee during your wait for a seat is one I haven't seen before and pretty cool in my opinion. Once seated, the hostess asked us what we wanted to drink. Immediately after, our waitress came by and asked for our drink order, but we referred to the hostess and very quickly the waitress brought our drinks over. I got a big cup of coffee and later on had a refill. The coffee was good and very hot. It seems Sugar Mags has their own blends you can buy, which I'm guessing they serve in the restaurant. I decided on the crab cakes Benedict with home fries. The menu is pretty big and offers a lot of different delicious looking breakfast items. The waitress returned for our order and I gave a compliment to their menu along with the meal I wanted. My girlfriend mentioned she needed some more time and the waitress replied something about not being able to put my meal in yet, crumpled up the order ticket she was writing on, and walked off. Hmmm, interesting. The next strike came when the waitress returned to get our order and my girlfriend asked if she could substitute linguica for ham on one of the menu items, to which the waitress replied "no" with the shake of her head and a slight smirk. I thought she was joking at first, but she was not. Her excuse for not allowing the substitution was that the linguica "is more expensive." We couldn't believe it. At the very least, she could have said they would do the substitution, but would have to add on an extra charge or give us some other option. No problem. However, she didn't give any suggestions. My girlfriend needed more time and the waitress walked off obviously annoyed with us. She didn't return for another 5 to 7 minutes, but must have walked past us 5 or 6 times. Finally, when she gave us attention again, my girlfriend was able to give her order - two eggs with ham, home fries, and pineapple fritters (with a side of linguica added for an extra $2.50). The food turned out to be good. The crab cakes were very, very good. Otherwise, the home fries were just okay as they were a bit bland. The fritters from my girlfriend's plate were delicious with the side of pineapple dipping sauce. Otherwise, everything else was on par with what we have tasted at other coffee shops in Gloucester. The value of the meal was justified and we enjoyed the lively atmosphere as well. It was only the snobby, bitchy attitude of our waitress that soured the experience. My girlfriend gave what was probably the first 10% tip of her life. It seemed the entire wait staff there was made up of young girls who were more concerned about their appearance than their service, although we only experienced the two I mentioned. Overall, I don't think we'll be wanting to come back any time soon, regardless of how good the menu looks. Side note: The picture of the crab cakes "Bene" on their website shows a side of dipping sauce on the plate (a horseradish type I presume), but I did not receive this with my meal. I was actually looking forward to enjoying that dipping sauce, so I was mildly disappointed.

This is by far the best breakfast place I've ever been to. I went here with five other people, and every dish was large and delicious!! Very nice feel to the restaurant as well.

Everyone else has said it- good place, good food. it's a tad pricey for breakfast- but then again, that's an unfortunate trend at most places. Make sure to get there early on weekends- it is a zoo at 10:00AM.

This is a place I discovered while staying in Gloucester for my birthday about 2 years ago. Ever since then, it's been my go to place for the best brunch I've had. Living in Boston, it's typically a special occasion to make the hour drive but it's totally worth it. I've seen a few people comment on the Crab Cake Benny and, as I see it, the main reason I keep going back. That said, there are many other items on the menu worth checking out and as I'm their with friends most of the time I've been able to sample a lot of the menu. Carrot Cake Pancakes and Pineapple Fritters are both amazing. No need to go through the rest of the menu but clearly I think it's all good. I'm also happy to report the service has been good each time I've dined with them. Highly recommended.

I adore Sugar Magnolias! My friends and I have been regular customers for several years now and I can honestly say we've never left disappointed. The food is consistently delicious - it is well made with great ingredients instead of being gimmicky. It's also very inexpensive for the quality you're getting. The service is friendly, personable, and attentive. They always humor my special requests (a Benedict without eggs?). As Anna B. mentioned, if you want to get in for breakfast on Sunday you might have a bit of a wait, but that's hit or miss. That could also be because when my friends and I go, it's usually towards the end of their day and when everyone is trying to get in for last-minute breakfast. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a casual, delicious breakfast, brunch, or lunch.

I'm usually a "bowl of cereal" girl in the mornings, but when I want pancakes and eggs and bacon and homefries and and and? I love me some Sugar Mag's! My husband adores eggs benedict and there are many different versions to choose from. The carrot cake pancakes are reputed to be so very good if you're into that sort of thing (I'm not, but I've had breakfast with friends who are, and have observed eyes-rolling-back-into-head behavior more than once). The french toast? Perhaps not orgasmic, but not far from it. The coffee is always good, too. I always leave with a very satisfied tummy.

Breakfast was ok. In previous years I loved the food here. But I stopped coming because it's so noisy. Only problem today was a bug in the ice cube in my water.

I've been here once and I loved it! Breakfast is out of this world! Tried the pineapple fritters to see what they were like, and they were so yummy! I could only eat one or two, though, 'cause they're pretty thick and there were other delicious sides they came with, but then that gave me a chance to bring the rest home and make other people eat them and see how delicious they were! haha. I was all excited and I was like "Mom, try this!" as I pretty much stuffed one in her mouth. It's bustling with activity and it can be hard to get a seat, but it's worth the wait. The food is excellent and they have a lot of different options to choose from aside from your usual pancakes or waffles.

Yeah, I was underwhelmed, too. I snagged my best gal pal and hit the road from Salem.. which, believe it or not, took like 1.5 hours -- thanks to the asinine pothole guys on 128. So since we were too late for breakfast, we still got coffee, a cup of their seafood stew (du jour), and then I had the salmon club and she had the bbq chicken quesadilla. The place was nearly empty and they sat us in the back table next to the noisy kitchen. It is cavernous and therefore feels (and sounds) like a cafeteria. We barely saw our waitress. She never asked how our food was. My salmon club was supposed to be on a panini, but instead it came on grilled Portuguese sweet bread, which ordinarily would be ok, but the bread was enormous compared to the little piece of burned salmon, even with the bacon. And it got soggy in about 5 seconds flat. I chose the corn and bean salad, over other side options of cous cous or the ubiquitous pasta salad, and found it terrible. The coffee is just that New England Coffee Co. stuff, nothing special and nothing to write home about. I don't know if they have anything dessert-like, since it was never mentioned. She just tossed down our check while we were mid-sandwich. The seafood stew was not bad, but we were bitterly disappointed otherwise, considering the distance to the end of Cape Ann.

Left the "Sugar" minutes ago. Loved everything about this eatery! It was very clean and the service top notch. I can't get enough good flavored coffee and was hooked up with 1/2 Hazelnut & 1/2 FV. Got a short order of the "Sweet Monkey Bread French Toast." so I had room for a bacon & egg w/ goat cheese sandwich- BOTH OUTSTANDING! Brother got the Cinnamon raisin French Toast and my pal had "eggs Flo" reportedly delicious. Comfortable setting to be visited often.

It was an all around OK. We were sat and served drinks promptly, but then it took 45 minutes to have our food delivered. The Carrot Cake Pancakes were great, the Frittata was lacking. I wouldn't go there again, I'm more of a fan of the food and atmosphere at Sailor Stan's and Georges.

I go here because my mom likes it. I like the atmosphere. It's a hip kind of place, and we've embraced it here as locals in gloucester because of that. That said I am not a huge fan of the food. The salmon is to avoid because it's fishy tasting and not fresh. The chicken breasts are just too huge. The mediteranean salad is great!

Went here with a friend on a school field trip to go whale watching. Nice clean place. We wanted lobster rolls but they didnt have lobster that day :( Anyways, we both ordered salmon on corn chowder instead. Just wanna say, It was mad good! THe salmon had just the right amount of glaze and the corn chowder was divine. If im in town again i would wanna try their breakfast stuff

Oh my god it's amazing. I've been traveling to Rockport all my life, but barely have spent any time in Gloucester, which has obviously been a mistake! Went here for my birthday breakfast with my boyfriend before a whale watch and I wasn't hungry for HOURS afterward! I got a short-stack of the Almond Joy Pancakes (coconut, chocolate chips, toasted almonds - delicious) and also a plain buttermilk short-stack, thinking normal size pancakes, 2 would fill me perfectly. Well, they certainly weren't normal size, they were as big as the oval plate they sat on! The buttermilk pancake became great seagull food :) My boyfriend had the Irish eggs Benedict, which he loved, thought the hash was great. Coffee was good and not overly strong, food was reasonably priced and we had a great time. They were shooting some new pictures for advertising, so the photographer had lots of other good things that I was sad I was too full to try. Can't wait to go back and try more stuff! Also, I love the sign that says they will trade food for Red Sox or Patriots tickets - very NE. AND they have a special where if you go on your birthday with 4 friends, you get your meal free!

in terms of standard breakfast, this place is as good as any other good breakfast place, if that makes sense. like, if you want eggs and bacon and toast, you're not getting anything phenomenal. you're not getting anything bad, either. if you want steak and eggs, be careful, because they're inconsistent. you won't be disappointed with their normal breakfast items overall. to go to sugar magnolia's for breakfast is to go for an adventure. go for the carrot pancakes with the maple butter (and this is coming from someone who doesn't use butter ever). go for the peanut butter, banana, honey, and bacon sandwich (holy sweet mother of someone neato and extraordinary). make sure you get the potatoes. i don't think they're doing anything super special to them but they're doing them up all hardcore and awesome. the pineapple fritters are fantastical. something lame is that they don't offer their lunch menu if you go on a sunday at noon. now, i know this is pretty standard because most places do brunch only on sunday, but doesn't brunch include lunchy items? i just really like a bunch of their salads and i've heard amazing things about their sandwiches. oh, and their fruit salad is nothing exciting. it's too much melon with like 3 grapes. this place is very good, especially when you try the "different" stuff on the menu.

We were lucky to be early risers! We visited Sugar Mags at 8am on a very, rainy Sunday morning! The service was attentive and friendly- and got our order of "poached hard" eggs just right! I want to try the carrot cake pancakes next time...yummo!

I love this place! My friends and I have been coming here since it opened. The waitresses are all really nice and friendly. The only downside to Sugar Magnolias is that there can be a bit of a wait on Sundays, but the food is worth waiting for!

I go here with my Thursday Breakfast Club before work. I try something different every time I go here. So far i have not been disappointed!! They have these awesome carrot cake pancakes with cream cheese butter for them...holy cow they are soooooooo good. they're hash is homemade with carrot and smoked ham...delicious with poached eggs. oh yes, and i cannot forget my standard grilled blueberry muffin. they're muffins are so good. bottom line, EVERYTHING HERE IS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS..please go if you are in the Gloucester area.

I went to Sugar Magnolia with my girlfriend and two of our friends. The four of us were seated immediately and the servers were friendly. I drank a mocha latte, which was a delicious. I ordered the "Gloria Toast" -- French toast with graham cracker crumbs on top and chocolate chips and marshmallow sandwiched between the two slices of toast. It was pretty good. There was way too much marshmallow for my taste. My girlfriend had the famed carrot cake pancakes with maple cream cheese butter, and I had serious breakfast envy. Please note: I don't usually like carrot cake OR cream cheese, but I LOVED these pancakes. They were THAT good. They were fluffy, sweet, and had just the right tiny bit of spicy kick. The maple cream cheese butter really made the meal, though. The prices are great. The tables are a bit close together, as another Yelper noted. The decor is a bit cheesy and bland. Overall, though, I highly recommend this place!

Expensive, always a long line, and all eggs are essentially created equal. Plus they would not give me just one pancake. With SO many breakfast options in Gloucester, this would be low on my list.

Breakfast and lunch spot. The dark roast coffee is the best on Cape Ann. Sugar Mag's, as it is called, features fresh food, prepared abundantly. With bar seating and lot's of tables, the wait staff is friendly, efficient and long-term employees (always a good sign). The muffins, made fresh daily, include things like blueberry/corn muffin. If you get there about 7:30 a.m., they are fresh out of the oven. The soups, chowders and sandwhiches are excellent. The bread options, fresh baked are heavenly. When you leave Sugar Mag's you feel like you've nutured yourself and had a great tasting-nutritious meal. At a great price as well.

How Sugar Magnolias can't be the best breakfast place around is unfathomable to me, unless you are a pretty standard eggs, bacon, toast person...which they have. The breakfast food is taking to an entirely different level with great items like pulled pork hash, pineapple fritters and probably what they are best known for, pancakes. I highly recommend getting one as a side or splitting it with someone if you're going in a different direction with your order. I was full the entire day after eating here and I wish I could go here once a week. Great valute, super friendly service.

This place is amazing!! I have been here twice. The first time I got a bacon omlette with the herbed cream cheese. Soooooo heavenly and my boyfriend got steak and eggs. After discovering this gift from God I knew I had to being my best friend here to show her the goods. This time I got an omelette even though I said I was going to get something else. It was still amazing. Also ordered a fruit cup. Cutest thing in the world and yummy. My best friend got a benedicted with hash and cornbread one. She loved it. Also i tried it. And it was delicious. We are coming back here on wednesday and I am finally going to get the Georgias french toast. See you soon Sugar Mags!;)

This place is amazing. My friend and I both ordered the 2 egg breakfast which comes with toast, homies (home fries) and choice of breakfast meat. I ordered the linguica, which was pretty good. The eggs were cooked perfectly (I love eggs!) and the home fries were pretty standard, soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. The breakfast also comes with a buttermilk pancake but we upgraded to one of their specialty pancakes. My friend ordered the blueberry and I ordered their carrot cake pancakes. First, the pancakes are huge. The blueberry had plenty of berries in them. They are light, fluffy and with a bit of crispiness where the pancake touched the griddle. The carrot cake pancakes are by far my most favorite thing here and I would come back and eat just that. The cream cheese tops it off very well, no syrup needed. The service was exceptional! Their card machine was not working, so we had to walk to the Bank across the street to get cash, which was no big deal. They were kind enough to let us know before we ordered and not at the end. If you want to spend a lovely day in Gloucester, start your morning here. You won't regret it!

Went here on a Saturday morning around 10:30am and it was busy, which is understandable. Our party (12 of us) offered to split up into three separate groups to make it easier on the staff. However, after 2/3 of our group got sat and we continuously got skipped over as other parties came in, needless to say we got frustrated. Upon questioning the hostess why we had gotten skipped over (rather calmly), she decided to raise her voice at me. That's when what was left of our party decided to leave and go to a sandwich shop down the street. Upon meeting up with our party who had been sat at Sugar Mag's, it sounds like it was the right decision. None of the 8 people who ordered breakfast had a good thing to say. I don't feel right giving only one star to a restaurant where I didn't personally try to food - but due to the poor service, I won't be going back to try it.

Arrived at about10:30 on a Saturday morning, had only a ten minute wait. We loved this place. It's cozy, the food is 5 star, and the staff were adorable. I ordered the Georgia's french toast and bacon eggs home fries and toast. There was so much food that we were offered a take away container. My friend ordered the eggs Benedict which was served with the lightest fluffiest hash and served over fresh grilled scratch made cornbread. She ask orders a side of carrot cake sand dollar pancakes. I don't even like carrot cake and these were the most delicious things I've ever tried to steal from a fellow diner. Insanity. Fantastic food. Friendly waitstaff. Reasonable prices, I loved every second I was there. Can't wait to go back when they reopen on 3/5/15. Enjoy your vacation. Guys, you earned it!

I love this place. Pancakes are AWESOME--huge delicious carrot cake pancakes, buttermilk, chocolate chip......Mmmmmm. Ambiance is so great. I feel like I am in a special place. BUT it takes tooooo long to get the food. Come on, 25 minutes to get a seat, and then we have to wait another 25 to 30 minutes to get pancakes? Really? I thought it was a fluke the first few times, but this last time the waitress (who mostly stay in the kitchen hiding) said "Yeah, it does take awhile to get the food." It is so good, but next time? I am going to discover some place else to eat.

Delicious! So many amazing breakfast options it was difficult to choose. My daughter and I shared the almond joy pancakes (which were not nearly as sweet and heavy as one might think) and the Wingaersheek omelette which is filled with incredible arugula pesto. We believed them to be the perfect combination of savory and sweet breakfast, but could have picked from any number of unique breakfast dishes. It was pretty packed out on Sunday morning and we appeared to have just beaten the rush by arriving at 9:30 and only waiting about 10 minutes for our table. The only reason I didn't go the 5 star route is due to the noise level. This is probably just personal preference on my part as the noise is only generated by lots of serving activity and great conversations. Again, nothing against Sugar Mag's, just wouldn't want someone to think they could expect a quiet atmosphere. I wish I would have tried one of their Kahlua or Bailey's lattes, but was afraid the flavor would conflict with my almond joy pancakes. Next time...

I came to Gloucester for business and really fell in love with the small town atmosphere. Everything was so quaint and I just really loveeee the landscape. Anyways, Sugar Magnolia's personifies whatever Gloucester is as a town. It's colorful and quaint and relaxing. Slow-paced and quiet. This is a great place to get lunch and escape from work (which is what we did). Also perfect for breakfast/brunch. I ordered the crab cake salad and thought it was exactly what I needed! Very refreshing, simple, but fulfilling. The crab cake itself was plentiful and yummy! Recommend this if you're going for salads. I would love to come here if I visit Gloucester again.

Excellent time at Sugar Mag's Sunday morning. There was a wait of about a half an hour, but honestly are there good brunch places where you don't have to wait? The hostess was up front about the amount of time that it would take and her estimate was spot on. Food was a big step up from standard breakfast fare. Carrot Cake pancake was pretty good, but the fig and arugula egg sandwich was amazing. Coffee was good and the service was polite and efficient.

good breakfast waited for 30 minutes this morning and were seated at the counter, which is wide and roomy. after we were seated we couldn't tell if there was a wait person covering the counter or not. we waited about 5 minutes before the hostess asked us if we wanted coffee. then we waited another 10 minutes for someone to take our order and another 20 minutes before we got our food. i had the veggie omelet with marble rye and 'homies' and my partner in crime had the crazy monkey [thick sweet bread french toast with banana slices, hold the caramel sauce]. the omelet was huge and stuffed with veggies [broccoli, mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach]. the 'homies' [home fries] were ok, but cut a little large for me. the crazy monkey was good. the only thing they could improve upon is the service, which was somewhat disjointed. otherwise a solid breakfast place! we will be back.

I grew up in Gloucester and I've been to Sugar Magnolias a handful of times, but I honestly couldn't tell you what possessed to come back after one time. The food is okay (at best). Any time I have ordered eggs, they have been overcooked to the point of being inedible. Sticking with bread based breakfast food (pancakes, waffles, etc...) is your best bet. Even then, you end up paying WAY too much money for pancakes that are mediocre. The part of this place that makes my skin crawl is the service. I didn't know it was possible to gather a group of such odious and snarky people together in one place. The staff is rude and act like are doing you a huge favor just by gracing you with the gift of their attention. This part is especially funny to me since when you do manage to get their attention they have almost no knowledge on the menu or food preparation and they will be rude to you the whole time. The food takes way too long to come out and its a 50/50 shot if your food will still be hot once it gets to you. Don't even attempt to make any substitutions or changes to your order, it will most likely be ignored or gotten wrong. I'm sure there are some good things about this place, I have just not been able to find a single one and at this point I have sworn to never go back.

  • Amber A.

The food is good, but the wait time is ridiculous. We had a party of 4 and put our name in a little after 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning and were told it would be 30-40 minutes. Went in to check after waiting 1 hour and were told it would likely be another 20 minutes. We were not seated until after 11:45 a.m. and didn't get any food until well after 12:30 p.m. The prices are a little steep, the space is funky but cramped and considering the menu is breakfast food I would anticipate that the wait time after ordering would be a LOT faster to help turn tables.

Sugar Magnolias is extremely disappointing and the overall attitude of the place is horrifying. I submitted an inquiry through the website on Monday to place a catering order 10 days in advance. By Thursday when I had not heard back, I called the restaurant during business hours to follow up. I was greeted with annoyance from the start, and asked if I could speak to someone about a catering order. I was handed to Missy, who I found out later was the owner. I shared that I was following up on an order that I had submitted online and wanted to check in on. She said "When did you submit it, because I haven't gotten it yet". Great way to start. I said "Monday". She said "I didn't get it. I don't know why. What do you want". Flatly. Not nicely. Or like she even cared. Perfect. So, I ran through the very long list of things that I was hoping to order for a party of 6. Over $100 worth of stuff, and we got into a bit of a disagreement over the minimum for sandwiches. I asked if there was anything she could do to make a switch, since we were ordering many other things on the menu, and also asked if there was anywhere else to talk, since there was a lot of background noise. She said, "no I can't reduce the minimum. You can order off the menu directly if you wish", and "Of course there is background noise, you are calling me in the middle of business hours". I said "Well, I submitted an inquiry online days ago that no one responded to, and I assumed I had to call during business hours to get my order placed". After I shared that I was not happy with the way I was being accommodated, she literally hung up on me. So, I called back, and after another long altercation, I asked if there was a better time for us to discuss this order, since we both were having trouble in the current conversation. She literally said "I'm good. I think I'll pass on this one." Unbelievable. I am coming in from out-of-town for my sister's wedding, and I can't even place a simple order for her bridal lunch. I have never been treated like this by a restaurant, especially by the owner. She apparently has no need for additional business and is doing so well that she can mistreat potential customers. I wouldn't waste my time with this place. She clearly has no time for new customers.

tried to get a veg plate or mediterranean plate on a saturday with no success at all. that was the only reason I went. Had to sample my friend's porridge, it was very apple flavored, but all I wanted was their eggplant and veg, no luck and seems like the hours are weird. tried to get my veg before a certain time one day and that didn't work either. Guess I'll have to make it myself as I'm never at the right place at the right time. I mean how hard would it be to toss some veg on a plate for a customer that loves the eggplant? Drafty as heck to boot And the time before last the portion of the veg plate w eggplant was so tiny, they just threw some lettuce, tomato, eggplant and very little else on there and then charged FULL price. that was ridiculous. BAD BUSINESS.

Gloucester is the new wedding destination. At least it seems that way. And as weddings (rather, receptions) go, the need for a hearty brunch in the area soon becomes imminent. Yelp, you sly dog you. The vibe is Southern comfort in tight jeans, succotash and LA ink. Always busy, but if you're traveling +1, there's a chance for instant seats at the service bar. We started with the laureled pineapple fritters ($6), and while any red-blooded Breakfan loves 'em some fried dough in a saccharine glaze - these didn't do it for me. What Kara G calls "fritters deconstructed" ends up being plain doughnuts, a sweetened brown sugar/condensed milk syrup and fresh cut pineapple. Just fine, but far from legendary. What is the runaway star is the Irish Benedict - two poached ova ova a stellar smoked pork shoulder and carrot hash smothering a big ass hunk of cornbread. It's like all my favorite things ever drenched in lemony hollandaise. There were homefries too, but mother goose, I couldn't take my fork off the main course. And for $10, it's total bargain gourmet. I want to be there right now stuffing my face with this work of art and not stopping until we have a certified Se7en-grade stomach bursting. Gross? Lost your appetite? Great! More for me.

This place is a favourite among students at my college--as in people freak out if you say you haven't been there. I finally got around to checking it out this fall. I had breakfast here with two friends on a Saturday morning. Here's the rundown: Food = incredible. Like, OMG. Yum. Coffee = delish. And endless. Yay. Service = fairly good. There's always a wait, but you can put your name in and go wander the shops nearby or whatever. We got in after half an hour, which was not bad at all for a Saturday. With the level of activity, the servers have to rush and are therefore sometimes a bit brusque, but our server was very courteous and did well amid the crazyness. (I've been in her position, and it ain't fun.) Atmosphere = odd, but charming. Fully clothed mermaid on the wall? Ohkay. We all envy the table in the window nook. Price / Value = Excellent. Thirty bucks for three full breakfasts and endless refills of coffee? Um, yes, please, thank you. Questions I have = Why is this place not open for lunch? and dinner? and round-the-clock dining? I'd like to come here at 4 a.m. Also, do people order beer with their brunch? Cuz there's a drinks menu on the wall. I am confused about that. Overall experience = fab. Would go again. Will probably go again because pancake craving.

Went for brunch with a group and was seated after a short wait. I highly recommend their flavored coffees over just the regular - the cinnamon bun one was great! We ordered a bunch of item to try including the crab & eggs, a carrot cake pancake, an almond joy pancake, a breakfast burrito and a standard egg & toast breakfast. I would say the crab & eggs were delicious and I would highly recommend - I don't even like seafood but loved this! The breakfast burrito was also fantastic and was a special of the day with eggs, black beans, jack cheese and herbs - super flavorful and tasty! The regular eggs & toast were nothing to get excited about as they were flavorless, undercooked and only came with a couple of breakfast potatoes - I would skip that next time. The pancakes were huge and the carrot cake one was tasty and came with a great cream cheese topping and the almond joy one was okay - it was very sweet and heavy on the chocolate for me and I wish there was more of a coconut taste and the almonds were on the inside! Overall a nice, quaint place but I would stick to their seafood options, specials and pancakes for an above average experience!

We came to Sugar Magnolia's (what a wait) for brunch and were not disappointed at all. With exception to my bloody mary that was made with sake. That was a bit bizarre but besides that I enjoyed my "Irish" Bene that was cleverly served atop corn bread. OH MY GOODNESS it was so good I could barely stand it!

Sugar Mags is a great breakfast place on Gloucester's Main Street. Go early--there is sometimes a wait. But it's always worth it. It's kind of diner-style, with a bar and tables and chairs. The traditional diner white heavy mugs for coffee and waitresses who fill your coffee between taking orders. But the food is a bit more than traditional diner food--there are pumpkin pancakes with maple butter, carrot cake pancakes, they really have some inventive stuff! But have no fear, they have traditional eggs, English muffins, fruit salad, and plain pancakes as well. I recommend getting a grilled blueberry muffin if they're available--yum!

Ate here yesterday, it was great! Glad I could get espresso with my breakfast. We showed up at 9AM on Saturday and the wait was only about 5 mins. The food did take longer to come out that any other breakfast place I have ever been to. But the food was worth it! Had the Egg sandwich with goat cheese, arugula, and fig jam. It was delicious. As I write this I wish I had it now! I also ordered the Mocha Latte it was excellent! I don't like my coffee sweet and this was prefect just a touch of chocolate! My boyfriend had the western omelet, it was huge and he said it was great.

This place is such a gem in our small community. I've only had lunch here once, but I go to Sugar Magnolia's for breakfast with family & friends pretty regularly. My biggest complaint is probably the line that usually develops on the weekends for breakfast, but the wait is totally worth it. Their pineapple fritters, crunchy-coated French toast, carrot cake pancakes, and crab cakes Benedict can't be beat! The menu is so original and tasty, I've never ordered something I haven't liked!

I went there for breakfast while on vacation visiting my sister. She had eaten there before and said it was wonderful. I looked the place up on Yelp and it had so many great reviews! Everyone seemed to rave about the carrot cake pancakes and pineapple fritters so I got the Charleston which came with the fritters and then shared a carrot cake pancake with my sister. My husband got the steak and eggs and my sister got an egg sandwich on multi grain bread with arugala, goat cheese, and a fig spread. My husband said his food was just OK. My sister loved her sandwich. My eggs and ham were alright, but eggs were a tiny bit runny for being scrambled. The home fries are good, but you don't get a lot. The fritters were not what I was expecting. Without syrup or the pineapple dipping sauce they had no flavor by themselves. I didn't taste any sugar in the dough. I guess I just expected them to be better. They were still edible, but the sauce they gave me was ice cold. I would have preferred it warm. I have the same complaint about the carrot cake pancake in that by itself it had no flavor or sweetness on its own and I feel like a could go home and make a better version. The cream cheese butter was good though! I guess I just expected more from the food because of all the great reviews. One thing the reviews were spot on about was the wait staff. We did not get the best waitress. At 9:45am on a Sunday and on the day of some kind of religious festival we were seated within 5min. This was a pleasant surprise since I expected to have to stand and wait. But our waitress was not overly nice or rude, but was like a robot. And it took forever for her to finally refill my water and never refilled my sisters iced coffee. And there was never a smile on her face and did not welcome us there or thanked us for coming or have a nice day. Her tip reflected her effort. So overall we left there full and semi satisfied. If I was in the area again I'd probably go back because it wasn't that bad of an experience and I'd try something different.

Service is horrendous. I live in Gloucester and I've been twice because I really wanted to like this place. But alas, both times it was super slow after we were seated and I had a rude server both times. Food is ok, the carrot cake pancakes are extremely good! But it's just not worth it for me.

Homer Simpson may say that you don't win friends with salad, but Sugar Magnolia's won me over with the Mediterranean. This bustling cafe in downtown Fish Town specializes in breakfast and lunch and I certainly snuck a few peeks at the breakfast plates on neighboring tables and wished I wasn't on a health kick... The Mediterranean ($8.00) consists of field greens, shredded carrots, red onion, a roasted slice of eggplant, hummus and two stuffed grape leaves. Lemon slices, pita triangles and a balsamic dressing are served on the side. It was a wonderful medley of Greek and Middle Eastern flavors. Can't wait to try breakfast!!!

I wanted everything on the brunch menu! I've never been that much of a brunchy person because it's all more or less the same wherever you go. Sugar Mag's, however, is the exception to the rule! I couldn't resist the milky way latte special. It sounded delectable! Served in one of those insanely huge latte mugs, it was a nice sweet treat to start my day. Not being able to narrow down my selections and being the little oinker that I am, I ordered two breakfasts! The Charleston and the silver dollar carrot cake pancakes. The portions were huge! I had food coma after polishing off the Charleston, which came with two eggs, four strips of bacon (yay! able to substitute the ham), four pineapple fritters with brown sugar dipping sauce and a nice portion of home fries. I also managed to wolf down one (came with four) of my carrot cake pancakes and packed the rest to enjoy later. Creative, yummy brunch worth the wait! We got there at 11am on a Sunday and the wait wasn't that bad: 20 minutes for two at the bar. The turnover was pretty fast, although the line never seemed to thin out. Service was a tad slow, and we thought for a bit that we had been forgotten, but alas, my mountain of food arrived. I'd come back for brunch in a heartbeat!

Good food, bad service -- that about sums it up. Waited for about 20 minutes to be seated, but I'm not even mad about that. They told me it would be 15 minutes, but I know that is a guess and I chose to wait. Once we placed our order the real wait was on. The food took about 40 minutes to come out, during which time the place had emptied out quite a bit. Once we got our food we had to wait longer for silverware. The waitress told us there was none clean! So while our food sat at the table getting cold we sat staring at it waiting for forks. About halfway through the meal the waitress came over and asked if we wanted a to-go box....well no actually, I'd like to eat here! I asked if they were closing soon and she said no, she just thought we were done. There were 4 of us, and we were all still actively eating---why did she think we were done? About 5 minutes later she returned with to-go boxes and the check for "when your ready". I've never felt like I was being thrown out of a restaurant before, but I guess there is a first time for everything. The worst part is that there were now 2 empty tables and no people waiting to be seated. The clearly didn't want me there, and I have no desire to go back

My friends and I enjoyed a nice weekend visit to the beaches of Gloucester. I'm a fan of this seaside town, but I did not enjoy the attitude and crap of Sugar Magnolia's. We found the place on Phantom Gourmet and were excited to try the graham cracker s'mores french toast. On a diet, I ordered the fruit cup with yogurt and granola. The waitress at the bar (asian girl) was really rude and snippy. I merely asked if I could have more fruit with the order because they ran out of granola, and she blew up at me telling me that granola is like "free toast." Interesting. Yea, she was too busy yelling at me to hear my request for yogurt, apparently, because she forgot. My friend's blueberry pancakes were huge but BLAND and TASTELESS. We both agree that the blueberries seemed frozen as they were super tiny and not the same size as the ones in my salad. My other friend's s'mores french toast was yummy - but we could have saved ourselves the trip and the drama (and some of the calories) but buying a jar of fluff, warming it a little, and 3 spoons.

Yum! Went here with a group of friends (none of us had ever been) and it was fantastic! Be prepared to wait a bit. There were 5 of us and we waited 30 minutes for a table. It's also very small and you stand while waiting (like most other breakfast places). I ordered the two egg breakfast which came with choice of sausage or bacon and pancakes or french toast. They have a variety of flavors in both the pancake and french toast. I ordered the cinnamon raisin french toast and it was amazing. Other things ordered at the table were the arugula and goat cheese breakfast sandwich and the eggs flo (Spinach, tomato, poached eggs & hollandaise served over English muffin) and the Goatie (Caramelized onion, tomato, mushrooms & goat cheese), We all couldn't get over how delicious the food was. Unique, flavorful, hot and good! A few reasons for 4 stars instead of 5. The service wasn't great. I realize it's a breakfast place but we didn't get refills on drinks when requested and the food took about 30 minutes to come out. However, I would go back to this place in a second!

Two stars for the food. My western omelet was really tasty. We went with our two kids (2 and 4) and it was so unbelievably loud in there, we had to leave shortly after getting our food. We couldn't begin to have a conversation in there. The waitstaff was friendly, but totally lacked when it came to caring about what they were actually doing. Knives, forks, and spoons were slammed down in the center of our table on a pile of crumpled napkins for us to sort out. The coffee was meh. But the noise, the NOISE! Sheesh. If a 4-year-old boy with a chocolate chip pancake refuses to eat it, wants to leave shortly after getting there, and says, "daddy, that place was too loud. I don't ever want to go back there again." ... that's when it's time for some soundproofing.

This place is amazing and my go-to for breakfast in Gloucester. The food is always good, no matter what you order. The coffee is excellent--and they even have coffee dispensers at the front counter for while you're waiting to be seated, which is nice because sometimes it can be a long wait...but it's worth it. My favorite thing about this place is the atmosphere. High tin ceilings, art all over the walls, and a general upbeat buzz make eating breakfast here very pleasant. Huge windows in the front overlook Main Street. The service is fast and friendly, and oh the prices! Two people can have breakfast here for under $10. Just the way breakfast out should be. Five enthusiastic stars.

At the risk of being redundant, this place is amazing for breakfast. I have been here several times and gotten a range of items and they have all been delicious. It gets very crowded on weekends but it's worth it.

Stumbled upon this joint while in the area for work.. Had the egg sandwich with arugula and fig jam - delish! Paired with bottomless coffee and yummy home fries, appropriate portions. Definitely will go back to try some other dishes for bfast and lunch.. But will bring a magazine or newspaper bc there is no service for Verizon / no wi-fi! Phantom gourmet has visited them too.
