Captain Carlo's was the first place we stopped when we finally reached Gloucester. We had a big group and loaded up on some excellent food and beverage. First off, great beer selection and you can't go wrong with the buckets o' booze! Our family vacation which consisted of 10, sampled chowder every night on vacation and not single place came close to Captain Carlo's. Best lobster roll I can remember having and the friendliest staff on the Cape. We came back for happy hours and dinner again while up here. Great times with the mechanical bull on the back patio and allowing kids to ride for awhile before the night got underway. Favorite place in Gloucester!

After a gorgeous day on Cape Ann, a group of us went to Captain Carlo's. It was a Sunday and we had a reservation for 12 on the deck. We were seated almost immediately by a gracious host. With our large group I thought we may have service issues, but the waitstaff were very attentive. Our drinks, along with baskets of rolls were delivered quickly. Some had the bucket mixed rum based drinks which are featured on their drink menu. They said they were strong, but absolutely delicious. Some of us had beer, sodas, and wine. One waitress took all of our orders, not flinching when we asked for separate checks- 10 orders. Our food arrived promptly, and without complaint. We all ordered different meals and found each to be excellent. Again, excellent wait staff - they made a point to check if we needed anything else. Asked if we were pleased with our food. The entertainment was an added bonus.. A perfect day weatherwise, great food & drink right on the water, with good friends........it doesn't get much better than this! BTW, we decided to return next week

We visited here twice yesterday and were treated very well on both occasions. We grabbed a few beers before our whale watching trip, and sipped them at the spacious outside bar. The bartender was quite friendly and pleasant, and even scrounged up an iPhone charger for someone in our party. The patrons were nice too, when the three of us posed for a photo under the Captain Carlo's sign, we struck up a conversation with some locals who generously offered to buy us a round, which we declined because we saw our boat was boarding. We pre-ordered our dinners before we went on the boat, and arranged to pick them up on our return. The gals at the front of the restaurant were very welcoming, helpful, and personable. Our styrofoamed dinners were ready and waiting for us when we returned to shore, and we enjoyed them on the bus ride back to CT. All three of us went with the Fish Tacos - a very good value at $10.95. You get three flour tortillas packed with haddock (fried or broiled), with lettuce, salsa, and cajun mayo. You can cheese between fries or slaw as your side. Lucky me, I got both !! The meal was terrific. The three tacos made a very generous portion with quite a bit of fish with the lettuce and salsa. The fries were a good portion as well. And my bonus cole slaw was surprisingly excellent- creamy and flavorful and top notch. Nicely done Captain- you and our crew sure impressed us.

I've been here twice and had their fried clam dinner both times. The fried clams and beer they serve are great. The second time I visited, they had live music, which was awesome. I've grown up eating seafood throughout Maine and MA, so I feel my review of their fried clams is rather valid. The person I dined with also let me have a bite of her fried fish, which too was delicious. If I find myself in Gloucester and am looking for a place to get some good food, this place will always come to mind.

We love food and people watching and this is the place to do both! We had fantastic service and nothing was too much trouble. We sat outside and enjoyed both the evening sun and fish that had been cooked with knowledge and care! The price was great and if you eat in Boston or further along the coast you can add an extra ten dollars to the price of your meal per person! Fun, relaxed and with a local buzz, we would there without hesitation. So what are you waiting for, go and make your own mind up?

Very expensive. I got a lobster salad and the lobster had no taste while the salad was not fresh at all. I could see the lettuce was old. So yeah, pretty disappointed because the price I paid for that salad was ridiculous and it was not good. I did not eat it. The drink was good though. I was not impressed.

Pretty cool place. Love music, huge outside eating area and a big resturant. They have a pretty good size menu and a great alcohol menu. It has great decor and just makes you want to relax and drink. Pretty good pricing in my opinion. I reccomnd coming here and giving it a try. Very nice staff and service. I bought a t shirt and the blonde girl behind the register was awesome. She went completely our of her way for me. I couldn't be any happier.

We had the Lobster rolls. Nice size but lobster had no taste. Probably just bad luck.

Took a Sunday drive with family to Gloucester this weekend. We showed up at Captain Carlos. Water front view. Children friendly. Immediate and friendly service. Extremely accommodating especially when 12 of is showed up:-) We ordered different things and were able to sample selections amongst our order. We had Lobster Bisque, clam chowdah, oysters, fisherman's platter, lobster dinner, salmon Dinner, beef tips, chicken tenders and burgers for kids. Reasonably priced. Food was EXCELLENT. would definitely recommend this location especially if you are trying to accomplish. A group/ family outing!!

Excellent food with very large portions. Outdoor patio is really nice. Great service and food was brought out quickly. Highly recommend it.

Hubby & I went here on Saturday for dinner and as usual the service and food was out of this world. We sat outside on the deck which is really a must if the weather is decent. We started out with drinks and crabcakes. The crabcakes were out of this world. Hubby had the clam plate which he loved. Our server talked me into lobster..baked and stuffed with whole scallops. I had to bring some of it home..but it was heavenly. The scene on at the deck bar was lively and fun...the music selection was perfect. This was a perfect ending to our perfect afternoon in Gloucester.

We waited about 25 minutes for a table outside, which was much less than the 40 minutes we were quoted. We waited for almost 15 minutes before our server came to our table. He took our order for drinks, appetizers, and food all at once. Everything was delivered in a timely manner but he didn't come to our table again. To get drink refills, we had to go up to the bar and ask the bartender. He never checked on our meals- swordfish and stuffed shrimp (okay but nothing great). We had to go to the host stand to get someone to find our check. Overall it was a disappointment.

Beautiful outside bar on the water, drinks are decently strong, the band was a complete buzz-kill on the particular night I was there, overall, decent bar. However, they are very aggressive and rude when they close. Even when you're cooperating and on your way out, you're still yelled at and "pushed" out the door. I don't want to be spending my money at a place that doesn't respect their customers.

  • Ashley C.

Great drinks, sucky service, and mediocre seafood. For the price, the seafood should have been great! Too bad that wasn't the case.... I get you're somewhat busy. But I shouldn't have had to ask twice for a salad that was suppose to come with dinner.... Still never received it. Nothing to help open the lobster. Cold sides. I will not be coming back or referring anyone here. Very disappointed. :(

  • Ami H.

Chowda was pretty good. The baked haddock I got came highly recommended but when I tasted it it really just tasted like the crushed ritz crackers it appeared to be covered in. My finance's fish tacos were great though! Generous amounts of fish, their sauce was lovely and tangy! They sat us outside at sunset basically. Had 2 (well-behaved) toddlers and it was windy and chilly so that was interesting. Our server appeared harried and uninterested in our table so that was disappointing. Overall, probably wouldn't come back.

Great spot!! Staff very friendly even in the peak of crazy tourist season. Anything you could want for food choices and lots of menu items with lobster- need I say more? Portions are fair sized; indoor and outdoor bars.

If you are looking for a quaint bistro this place is not that. If you don't mind eating at a relatively corporate owned feeling restaurant with better than average food this is your place. The food, service, and ambience were are good. Our server was attentive and our food made it out to quickly. The food was on the whole quite good. We tried the clam chowder and lobster bisque and both were excellent. I ordered the calamari. It was very well prepared. The way it was prepared it really brought out the flavor of the calamari. The down side to that would be that calamari doesn't have any taste. The prices were in keeping with what one would expect from a seafood restaurant in a tourist town, i.e. not cheap. Atmosphere 3 - It was comfortable and well maintained. It had a bit of a chain feel but recently renovated/ well maintained chain feel. Service 4 - Our server was attentive and personable. Cost/Value 3 - It is a little pricey but the food was well prepared. Food 3 - The dishes we had were well prepared. The soups were really good and the fired seafood was really well done but the calamari was exceptionally bland.

Undercooked onion rings, bad service and ok fish taco and burger. Overcharged but waited 30 minutes for bill so we didn't protest.

Absolutely terrible. Had the fish and chips which was supposed to be haddock. The fish was soft and mushy and not very tasty. I ended up getting sick in the middle of the night from eating it. Wouldn't even think about going back there again.

Good clam chowder...but that's pretty much where it ends...ordered clam chowder and onion rings, my fiancé ordered a buffalo chicken wrap, and my daughter a grilled cheese...food came out and then when asked if we needed anything else I said yes my daughters grilled cheese, and the server said oh it will just be a few more minutes aka he forgot to put it in with our order...so they rushed it and when it came out the cheese was not close to being melted and the bread was not grilled, just looked like a buttered roll. I sent it back and at this point we had already finished our food, so we decided not to try to have them "re cook it"...and the onion rings came out cold, and I don't even mind that as much as they just didn't taste good either. Now I've been at restaurants where my daughters meal was forgotten, but the servers are always apologetic, not here though, the server gave me a look when I opened the grilled cheese and showed the unmelted cheese. Also, no changing tables in their restrooms...Needless to say I won't be back again.

My husband and our kids sat on deck for dinner. A strong smell of trash blew through every few minutes. It took one hour for our meals which were delivered by hostess not our waiter as he did not return until we asked for the check even after asking for him. My husband's steak tips were dry and no flavor. I got the baked haddock which was nothing great. I did however get very sick when I got home through night. I definitely would not recommend.

Not one, but two short curly hairs on my wife's plate. One in the sandwich, one in the coleslaw. We all stopped eating and left. Gross.

Nice ocean port view. The entree portion is huge. Especially the shrimp and scallop stuffed lobster. I can't finish it by myself.

Went walking around Gloucester with a friend when we saw this place and decided to get some early dinner. We were so happy! We shared the Fisherman's Platter which came with Fish, Shrimp, Scallops, Clams, Calamari and Fries. Everything was on point, especially the Scallops, they were delicious. Nothing was overcooked and everything tasted fresh. I am not a big seafood eater and never eat fish, but the haddock they used in the fried fish made me a fan! The wait staff was courteous and helpful. The price were reasonable for the amount of food we received. We both ate until full and we both took some home.

chose to go here for a quick bite with the family, wanted to give place a second chance after a awful experience 4 years prior. same inconsistency and poor quality food. we ordered the chowder and we could still taste chunks of flour in it, we told the waitress who could careless. we ordered our food, fried clams no sh*t two minutes later they came out like pre-cooked Chinese food right off heat lamp. I expected piping hot clams I got semi warm food that I paid good money for. the batter is way to thick as well. I advised the waitress who could careless and didn't remove the poor excuse for fried clams off the bill and I'm from this area. This place might have good night life and over serve customers booze but don't come for the food it's terrible. will never go here again. should have stayed a fish market.

we stopped in after coming back from a whale watch (which was amazing!). i started with lobster bisque, which had very little lobster and was really thick and clumpy. i had the lobster roll for my entree and my husband had the clam plate - which had a ton of clams (no complaints). the lobster roll was a little skimpy compared to others that i've had and it was just eh. the BIG downside: we sat outside on the deck - which was beautiful - but they allow smoking at the outdoor bar. HUGE turnoff to smell smoke while you're eating. we did mention it to one of the waiters who offered to move us but we were already settled in and just toughed it out. i THOUGHT it was illegal in massachusetts to allow smoking where food is being served, AND where restaurant workers (waiters, bartenders, etc.) are subjected to it, but the server assured me that is WAS legal. either way, i wouldn't recommend sitting outside if you have a problem with it. safe to say we won't be returning.

Reviews I read were fair to good but I had my doubts. They're advertising and posted photos are mostly about the entertainment and bar scene. That is definitely their focus. It was very, very loud - both from the bar area and the "ambient" background music. We dined on the sun porch, a large glassed-in room with a view of the marina. The tables and chairs are a heavy and stiff plastic that are not comfortable. When using my knife to cut my sandwich, the table shook. The room was very stuffy so we asked to have the overhead fans turned on. Someone complained so they shut them off - they have only one speed - super high. The food was good, but only good, not more. The cooked green beans were raw, my knife wouldn't cut them. First stop, last stop there.

Captain Carlos Nice little dock side restaurant in Gloucester. My friend and I came here after 5 hours at Good Harbor beach (quite burnt). We shared fish tacos ($12) and an appetizer portion of mussels (I forget the price). The tacos were very good, though I could have done without the jarred salsa. They had like, a spicy mayo on them that was really great, and the fish was delicious. The mussels were good and were quite a big portion! It was my first time eating mussels, so take that with a grain of salt. We got them in a butter white wine sauce. They were nice, hot, and very tasty. We also were happy to see a German Grapefruit beer on the menu. It's a must try! Very refreshing. However, the service was quite slow and it seemed like we had to wait a while for the check, as well as the food.

Searched for a place specifically for lobster rolls and outdoor dining in the Glouster area so landed on Captain Carlo's. First, I need to let owners know that Yelp's directions via Yelp mobile app are dead wrong. We ended up about 10 minutes away with Yelp wanting us to take a right where there was no right to be had. Of course, we ended up finding it, but using the mobile app Navigator to do so. Just sayin', we were intent on finding this venue. Once there, we enjoyed sitting outside and ordered lobster rolls with fries. Haveta say it was ok. While I enjoyed it, can't say it was anything extraordinary.

OMG...get the baked stuffed shrimp!!! Amazing. Even better than Legal's (since the changed there version of this it has not been the same). I was so impressed with Captain Carlos's version. My mother orders the same thing and agreed that it was fab. My fiancé got a seafood platter and he was not so impressed with it...so if you go...get the backed stuffed shrimp!!! You won't be disappointed!!!

We were there last night. GF and I both had the baked haddock. It was excellent. The salads were fresh, tasty & generous. The service was excellent (speedy, but not rushing us in any way). The best part was, they didn't overcharge us for seafood in the middle of August. GF gave the restrooms a thumbs-up. A great place, we'll be back!

    (5)
  • Dawn L.

Best entertaining and baked haddock around!!! The fish was cooked perfectly, the service was great, and you can't beat the seating! It was a little pricy (3 people $100) but since the food was soo good I didn't mind

Don't bother. The onion rings were gross and when I told my waiter and asked to swap to cole slaw, she said I would have to pay extra. The fish tacos were average.

Worst seafood I have ever had. After driving around Gloucester for a while and finding lots of packed restaurants with long waiting lists, we drove by Captain Carlo's. Based on the yelp reviews and the fact the location is right on the water in Gloucester, I expected above average seafood. I have no idea who wrote the high reviews of Captain Carlo's, but the food was pretty miserable. I ordered the fish and chips and what I received was clearly out of a frozen bag of pre-cooked fish. I don't understand why a seafood restaurant in a seafood industry town would serve frozen fish. It clearly tastes worse than fresh fish. Maybe they just thought I was some out-of-towner who can't tell the difference. The only redeeming quality of the place is the location. Sitting by the water was nice, but don't expect to enjoy the food.

  • John E.

We went here instead of our usual haunts based on the Yelp reviews. We were so disappointed. We started with the Clam Chowder. Honestly, it was the worst we have had outside of a can. It tasted dirty. Not usual fresh "dirty" but as if it had an extra cup full of Massachusetts dirt. Next were tasteless entrees. The chicken in the Chicken Alfredo (we have a guest who doesn't eat seafood) was boiled so it was tough, tasteless and chewy. The Tropical Tuna was tasteless. Indeed, while the mango salsa had some flavor the tuna was overlooked, dry and truly tasteless. We couldn't decide if it was even tuna. I had the fried fisherman's platter. It truly was a lot of food but, with the exception of the scallops and French Fries, it was terrible. I never use salt or ketchup but had no choice as it was almost inedible. The clams were inedible and had a terrible taste. In fact, we were worried that they were spoiled. We live in Boston and are used to good, fresh seafood. I would suggest that, if you want good seafood, stay clear of this place.

I got the lazy lobster pie, market price was $24. Thought this was a decent price for this meal until the meal arrived. It was tiny!!!! Very small casserole dish, 10 bites tops. I was disappointed. My husband got the lobster BLT which was 16/17 bucks and he had more than twice the amount of lobster I had. If I could rewind back I would have ordered that because it had a good amount of meat for cheaper, Oh well! Probably will not come back. Waitress wasn't very nice either, no "you're welcome" or anything.

To start, it is hard to find being tucked down a side street. Once found, got seated right away and ordered. Long wait between the ordering part and actually getting food, about 35 minutes. But when it arrived it was piping hot. Fish and chips were nearly the best I have eve had. Nice, fresh tasting and moist. The batter was so light it almost didn't even taste fried. Sooooooo good. Even the cole slaw, which I never eat outside of my wifes, was really good. Decent portion too, but not nearly as plentiful as indicated on Phantom Gourmet. Overall, despite the wait it was definitely a come back to place. Update: Went back and sa tin the sunroom. Chowder was excellent and we split a fisherman's platter. Huge!! Filled with clams, scallops, shrimp, calamari and haddock. Could not find the fries right away there was so much fish. So darn good! Only thing I would say is there was a bit too much calamari compared to the other fish, but otherwise, so good. Not sure when they close for the season, but want to go one more time before they do. Did I say it was sooooo good?? Update: Went yesterday for a third visit and it is seafood heaven! Got right in and seated despite it being busy. Waitstaff excellent as they help each other out nicely. Lobster bisque had good chunks of lobster in it, not disappointed at all. Then came the main course, I had a shrimp plate, wife had scallops. In both plates there was so much fish and so little fries, it was incredible. Also, the batter on the fish was light so there was not that over-stuffed feeling you typically get with fried food. I have to say this is by far the best seafood place on the North Shore and I like a few of them. Well worth the 45 minutes to get there!! Glad it is just May so I can return a few more times this year. As a result, upgraded the rating to 5-stars. Update: Aug 2, 2014 - As great a place as this is, the lobster pie left me puzzled since everything else there is excellent. $24.95 and was told it had the meat of at least one lobster, but am still looking for that lobster. It had mostly knuckles, no claws and no tail meat. Very disappointed but will only send me back to the Causeway for the best Lobster Pie anywhere. For me, though, everything else at Captain Carlos remains #1, just not their lobster pie.

I go up to Gloucester quite frequently during the summer. We love coming here for the live music. Last time we were here it was 5/25/13 on Memorial Day weekend. We saw Mad House play. They were incredible. We got some fried clams here and they were delish. I would recommend coming here.

Sat outside here for lunch on a beautiful day before our whale watch. A little loud, but a nice, casual atmosphere. I had a burger which was pretty good, and my fiance had a lobster BLT. Unfortunately he said it was one of the worst he'd ever had! (and he's had a lot). He said the lobster was chewy and tasted old and flavorless, which was upsetting seeing as though the ocean is about three feet away. Our waitress wasn't too friendly or attentive. Good location but we probably won't be back.

  • Margarita B.

We got the fried calamari, oysters on the half shell, shrimp, and mussels - all were super fresh and tasted great. The live music was fun on a perfect summer day. Service was bit slow, but we didn't mind since it was so beautiful out. Would definitely come back.

That was goooood. Steamed clams, lobster chowder, and a baked seafood casserole, good IPAs (and she liked her Bloody Mary too) all while enjoying the huge dockside patio. Just an overall good choice if you're going to eat in Gloucester!

Great atmosphere! Love the Gloucester harbor! Lobster BLT was great and the Oyster were too. Great place to check out if you're in the Gloucester area and looking for seafood/good music!

Got the whole belly clam po boy. That thing delivered an orgasmic punch. Perfectly seasoned, battered to a nice thin crisp with a tar tar sauce to die for. The lobster bisque soup was on game too. Best of all? Rhonda the waitress had charm and on point recommendations. In Gloucester? Come here.

Disappointed. 6:00pm reservation. Seated on time. Drink order taken and drinks delivered. Food order taken...wait...wait...wait...wait. 45 minutes for food to arrive when we were only one of 4 tables seated in the place. Husband got the lamb special - served cold and over cooked. Fried scallops for me - cold and over cooked. I know it was Easter Sunday and they had a big lunch crowd but if the food was served as ours was I would say lunch could not have gone well. Sad because we have always enjoyed the place.

This place is sweet. When I am in Gloucester, this is my go-to spot for great seafood, a fun atmosphere, and solid, attentive service. I have gone to a special event here and they pulled out all the stops--it was great. I've also come in the winter, when Gloucester is icy cold and less populated, and this restaurnat provided a warm, friendly environment. I recently went on a warm (almost hot) April day and there were folks having cocktails on the patio, a live band setting up, and just a mood to set the stage for summer. The clam chowder is solid, and the fish and chips were excellent. It is rare to find fish THAT white in a fish and chip dish. Overall--stop by for good cocktails, great food, and a good time.

Our party of 6 were in Gloucester for a performance at Gloucester Stage and chose Captain Carlos's for dinner. The heavy fog that had settled in limited our harbor view, but the food made up for the lack of view. The dining room was not crowded and we had very friendly and efficient service for drinks and dinner. We were all pleased with our seafood meals including Swordfish, Tuna, Salmon Oscar and Seafood casserole. We would definitely return to Captain Carlos's the next time we are in Gloucester area.

Decided to check this place out after seeing a piece on Phantom Gourmet. Went on a beautiful sunny Tuesday afternoon for lunch. Requested a table on the deck and while en route to the table decided I would sit at the bar under the sun, well, not being a fan of cigarette smoke while dining I opted back to a table at the end of the deck away from the bar smokers. I ordered a cup of clam chowder which was quite good, very creamy and tasty. For an entree I went with the Lazyman's Lobster, mkt price for the day was $24.95. It was basic yet extremely delicious version which included a wonderful amount of lobster with bread crumbs, a side of drawn butter to be poured on top and the option of mashed potatoes or french fries with carrots or coleslaw. I went with the fries and slaw option. Everything came out fantastic and was delicious, one of the best lobster pies I've had in quite some time and it really satisfied my summer time craving for a great dish. Definite recommend.

We came here with the family last night. I came here once before and had a good experience so we decided to go back. We were a little disappointed this time. The service was ok, our server could have been a little more attentive, he did not ask us what sides we would prefer with our meals. The usually delicious lobster bisque was so salty that we had to send it back:( The stuffed lobster was phenomenal, however the sesame encrusted tuna fish was not good at all, we where going to send it back but felt bad. The tuna steak was thin and not cooked to the right temperature (we had asked for rare, and it was pretty well done) the dish was very bland. Overall the place had a fun atmosphere. In terms of food, it feels like you need to know what to order (their signature dishes such as the stuffed lobster) it feels like the rest of the food gets little attention from the chiefs.

The absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced; the staff are incredibly rude and unfriendly. The tea was cold and tasteless, the coleslaw was sour and was sent back to the kitchen with no replacement, and I found a hair in my nachos. Overall terribly dining experience

As a small group of friends looking to get together and sit outdoors and enjoy some good food and listen to music, we decided to try Captain Carlos. First word I can say about this decision is: MISTAKE! First problem while waiting for our drinks, we had the unfortunate pleasure of receiving a seagull dump arriving on our table which splattered everywhere. Okay, not anyone's fault but it was a prelude of things to come. First, we ordered appetizers which took at 30 minutes to arrive. The wait was an issues but the calamari was very dry. In fact, with six people at the table, we didn't even eat half the basket of dry calamari. It gets better, we go ahead and order the food around 8:15 expecting to enjoy some lobster, haddock, and steak tips. Well, we waited and waited and waited and no food. The band is getting ready to play, they are breaking down the table to set up the dance floor and we are sitting there waiting for our food. Our appetites getting stronger by the minute. We chase down the waitress and she tells us "it's coming". 9pm comes and still no food. Everyone is getting frustrated. We chase down the manager to find out what is going and she leaves to check things out. We wait again and she is no where to be found. Finally she arrives and as we start to question her on the food again, she said she will comp us a round of drinks. Some of us get them and some don't. It's 9:15 and we had tin so we venture back toward the kitchen complaining and finally we see our order start making its way out of the kitchen to our table. It's around 9:25 and the food arrives (if you can call it food). First, the haddock was so dry, I would need a dozen lemons to juicy it up. The squash was uneatable and the fries undercooked. Nor the "show leather" steak tips were another story. And finally, the mash potatoes still needed to be thawed out. The lobster tasted like rubber as well. S four of us told the waitress we can't eat this stuff and said we are not paying for these plates. They agreed after some harsh negotiating but took away our comped drinks. We gave up arguing with this establishment paid what was on the bill and left and vowed never to go back. One of the worst dining experiences ever!

Aweful calamari, excellent lobster BLT. Can't figure it out. I think the chef forgot to season the batter for the calamari. It was the worse we have ever had. We had the whole table try it and we all agreed - just aweful. Tasted like they dregged in flour and threw in the frier. Too bad you could tell the Calamari was fresh - the unseasoned flour batter just ruined it. Service was great however very slow. Restaurant wasn't that busy. Will have to say that the lobster BLT and fish taco's were good. Being an extreme foodie - thought I would be honest for those who care...

Called at 8:20 and asked what time they closed and was told 9. Was asked if we were going to come, and we said we'd be there soon. Got there at 8:45 and was told they closed. Awesome! Thanks for lying and making us drive to you. Won't be coming back here.

"How do you decide if you you want to name your kid Carlo or Carlos? I mean this place kind of uses both of those names in one!" Yes, this is what Matt J. started off our meal with--his confusion with the name Carlo or Carlos! ha ha This place is a pretty big restaurant with a nice patio in the back that overlooks the harbor here. There is also a completed tented patio section as well so in case it is raining they've got you "covered" literally which is nice ha. But the food here is just average in my opinion....well maybe a little below average... First I wanted the fish cakes, but they didn't have those and didn't tell us that in advance so that made me sad. So I asked if I could have them make a crabcake sandwich instead since they only had the crabcakes as an appetizer, but no again...Sad! So I got their fried haddock sandwich which was pretty darn bland. Good thing they brought a vat of tarter sauce to our table! That was the biggest bottle of tarter sauce I've seen ha ha It went better with my brother's fish and chips which he really liked and I have to say they do use the right amount of batter on their fish and chips so it didn't taste too fried, but that was one of the few highlights. Matt J. got their lobster roll and for $15 it was a pretty good buy, but definitely not the biggest in the world and he said not the best lobster roll either. Kelley got their chinese salad with shrimp and shrimp were huge but her salad was drenched in dressing so not so great....Jeff got their tuna steak sandwich and just felt it was an average sandwich as well. The number of scallops they put on melissa's salad however was mind boggling! I couldn't believe it! And those were pretty tasty grilled scallops. The only other good part, because the rest of the salad was blah. So I should have just ordered a bowl of those scallops and skipped out on everything else. Oh but their lobster quesadilla was good too!! That is a special though, so definitely order one of those to split and start with!

were in gloucester for a weekend trip and ended up eating at carlo's twice in one day. had the baked lobster stuffed lobster and fish tacos the first time around and a lobster roll and fish tacos the second time. lobster stuffed lobster was ridiculously good. meat was so easy to get our of the shell and the lobster stuffing was pretty much the tail and then some additional lobster tossed and then some! fish tacos were so nice we had to have them twice. too much salsa though... didn't like that. lobster roll i wouldskip... but only because even though it's tasty... there's not as much lobster in it for the price. they have a really nice shandy called curious traveler .... that beer was born to live on waterfront restaurant patios.

I spent a long weekend in nearby Rockport relearning scuba diving before heading to Captain Carlo's to celebrate the certification of scuba diving for a few other people. After spending a few days on the bottom of the ocean looking at baby lobsters and mamma lobsters, it only makes sense to seek out a place where we can eat them and their relatives, right? Captain Carlo's is a huge restaurant, with lots of indoor seating and a big outdoor patio. We went on a weekday afternoon, but I'd be curious to see what this place is like in a weekend night. The food was good, with big ol' lobsters and lobster meals where you can have them do all the work to break it down. The steak isn't bad, but be aware that there's a slight chance 'medium well' will end up being 'well' done. In a nutshell, it's a solid option for seafood. When I return to the area for scuba diving, I'll probably stop by Captain Carlo's for the quick casual affordable option.

I've been here a bunch of times, and I'm never disappointed. Yesterday I had a lobster salad, no mayo. The lobster was fresh and flavorful, and the portion was generous. They offer a kids meal, so we were able to get chicken fingers for my toddler. The staff were friendly & attentive, and the views can't be best. One of my favorite places in Cape Ann.

I just came home from Captain Carlos with my family. It is a Saturday night in June and this place is hopping! Excellent views of the water and a very big menu. Unfortunately, the service was horrible . We never got our food. We complained to the manager who promised it would be right out a dozen times and finally we got up and left after two hours of waiting. They "found" our order, packaged it up and when we got home, we realized that they forgot on of the dinners. Truly a joke. Don't waste your time, money or aggravation

Hubs and I were pretty disappointed with this place. We stopped in for dinner after a long day, and were hoping for some tasty seafood. Instead, we got overcooked seafood, overcooked steak and frozen fries from a bag. It's the sort of a place that either covers everything with breadcrumbs, cheese and/or butter, or just deep fries it. Probably a good spot to go out for drinks and bar food to hear a band, but not for a great meal. I guess with a view like that, you can be a little bit lax on the rest.

Service was great, fries nice and crispy, not a fan of the fish I had. I ordered fish and chips and felt like the batter in the fish would have been better on chicken.

Found this place after diving, it was perfect nice deck outside over the water, with a great bar, not great views, but I love being outside nesr the water. Food was great & you get a lot for the $. Inside looked nice as well. The staff was very friendly. Nice casual, friendly place with good food & drinks! Will go again

The best word to describe the waitresses at this restaurant is: Rude. I have been there twice, with the first experience being decent, and the second making me swear off the place forever and go out of my way to tell people what a crappy establishment it is. I went in there one day, and wanted to get a take-out meal. I wasn't sure if they did that or if you had to eat in, so I asked the hostess. She seemed perky enough and assured me that they definitely did do that. A minute later, a very surly waitress came over and threw a menu at me before telling me she'd be back in a few for my order. Now, I may have ignored this rude behavior, however, I heard the waitress complaining to another person that some jerk wanted take-out and they don't even do that and she was going to be out of a tip. I found that so incredibly unprofessional. When she returned, I started my order (yes, stupidly still ordering) and she actually had the nerve to remark that what I wanted would take forever and was I sure I wanted that. At that point, I said, 'You know what? Thanks, but no thanks.' and walked out. I don't care how good the food is, I would never recommend a place like that to anyone I know.

This is a nice seafood place with water views. I ordered the fried seafood platter. Lest you think that twenty five bucks is a lot, remember that the portion can feed 2, perhaps 3 people. It's enormouis. The best feature were the scallops - as good as they come, large and sweet. The fish fillet was tender and white. The clams and calamari were also very good, although I prefer the batter a little lighter. The shrimps were OK, which is par for the course (they don't deep fry very well, after all). There's plenty of parking, and service was good. If you're in Gloucester, Captain Carlo's is a good choice.

Now across the country we go from CO to MA (its been a fun summer). Have you read my reviews I love New England Seafood, other than my wife it is the best thing that comes from NE! So every time I am there I make sure to consume as much NE seafood as possible. Captain Carlo's has given more ammo to that goal. Now I did forgo the seafood platter and in hindsight I should have eaten it, I would have been running the next 6 months either way. It was lunch we had been on the beach all morning and fried seafood and martinis were calling our names. We sat outside listening to sound of the harbor sipping on our martinis we ordered a bowl if steamers and the tuna carpaccio. In place of my seafood platter I had the Clam Belly Po'Boy which was amazing and enormous. Go here it is awesome and it has live music at night

Good service and great food! Stopped in for lunch, sat outside which was great, although the bird droppings on the umbrella were not appealing. Started the meal with the lobster bisque (a cup is all you'll need) - DELICIOUS! We then shared a lobster roll and fish tacos. The lobster roll was just right...not too much mayo and plenty of lobster. Fish tacos were my favorite though with a nice chunk of haddock and a spicy sauce. If we had room, would have tried dessert too! The outside dining was good, though there was also ample space inside and a beautiful bar both on the deck and inside too. Plenty of parking, adequate service.

A true Gloucester seafood restaurant with great dockside seating! I had the pleasure of dining at Captain Carlo's recently for a business function. While I'm not sure what our meal cost, I was surprised at how good it was. We had the New England Clam Bake, which came with a cup of clam chowder, a garden salad, steamers and a lobster and either fries or a baked potato. The clam chowder was really good. The steamers, while a bit sandy, were also delicious. And the lobster ... Mmmm... it was one of the largest, most succulent lobsters I've had. Service was actually great at accommodating our large group. We all had a great time! If I'm ever in the Gloucester area again, I'd definitely stop by Carlo's!

We were in Gloucester to meet up for a group dinner and spent the afternoon wandering around. By mid-afternoon we were hot, tired, and looking for a beer. Captain Carlo's was nearby and had a nice large deck that was calling us to it. We decided to order an appetizer to hold us over to dinner and decided on the calamari. OMG. The calamari! Amazing! Tender, tasty, fresh. Little bodies (l love em), tasty rings... This was the best fried calamari I've had. Yay! Great service. Can't say much about the rest of the menu, but next time we're in Gloucester, I'll definitely think about stopping back in for cold beer and calamari!

We recommend this place to anyone looking for seafood in Gloucester. Biggest and best fisherman's platter on the island! We always sit on the deck. The restaurant can be very loud inside. This is always our first stop for Fiesta. Nachos are great and huge. I've never had a bad meal there. They are good with substitutions and pretty friendly. Pasta dishes are always flooding with sauce though, I always find myself wishing for a strainer to get to the rest of my food.

Coming from Iowa, as a kid, it's no wonder I thought I hated seafood. It's hard for me to accurately gauge seafood as on the east coast I am in love with everything. I would give this place four to five stars except a couple issues. My baked haddock was melt in your mouth delicious. My potatoes would have been amazing. However, they weren't super warm. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their food but out waitress was probably our biggest issue. We had to flag her down to get drinks refilled, etc. The food was awesome. The service not so much. I do want to give an extra star just for the amazing crab cakes!!!

My boyfriend & I ate here for dinner after a whale watch on Saturday. I was initially hesitant from its outward appearance (looked a little divey) but was very pleasantly surprised. The menu was pretty extensive and had everything from soups & salads to pasta & sandwiches to a large array of seafood choices. I started with french onion soup and it was delicious. Very cheesy, tasty, just right. My meal was a buffalo chicken wrap and french fries. The wrap was good-sized, fresh and had lots of chicken. A little bit spicy for me, but that's the way buffalo chicken really should be. Fries were good ~ crisp and hot and a large portion. My boyfriend had a cup of clam chowder which was very creamy & satisfying and then ordered the baked shrimp which he loved & raved about afterward. I've seen a few complaints on here about the service. It must depend on the server that you get. We had a young guy and he was wonderful. Very friendlly, attentive, polite and helpful. Checked on us often but wasn't in our faces or rushing us. The manager of the restaurant (well, I think it was the manager) also went around to personally check on everybody. Our meals and check both came promptly. I have absolutely no complaints about the service. We will definitely go back here. It was rainy on the day we went so unsure how the outdoor seating is, but it seemed to be a large area w/ lots of tables & umbrellas. I'm sure it would be fun on a nicer day.

The restaurant is right on the dock and while I can't tell if it's a touristy spot based on all the whale tours that surround it or intelligent choice of locale (it's seriously the only spot you can easily walk to for a meal before hitting the deck of a boat), it wasn't all that bad. I admit that I was a bit worried since it was the only place, but it certainly tried to live up to need of the area. I decided to go big or go home, getting the haddock n' chips over just the fish and chips. The haddock was crispy but not overly fried. Just right. The tarter sauce was good, though I have no idea if it's homemade at all. Fries were also crisp and not greasy, and the coleslaw was creamy with a hint of tang. I was happy with my choice, and everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals as well. It wasn't terribly overpriced either, which was a nice surprise for us. The service was friendly though it either came around in quick spurts or left us high and dry. It was by no means terrible, but of course whenever you need something, that's the dry spell. Ah well. There was some music going on around 7 when our whale tour returned, so it seemed like a fun little spot to hit up after a ride on the waves if eating prior tends to have your meal going overboard later... Eater discretion is certainly advised.

The perfect dockside restaurant for apres-beach seafood. My husband had the baked haddock special which was amazing and my sesame crusted tuna was completely perfect. So delicious. Our toddlers had fries, mac n cheese and chicken nuggets. The chicken nuggets had a little bit too much crunch on them, making them hard to chew and the mac-n-cheese could have been tastier, but the kids were happy enough. The outdoor seating was relaxed... not perfectly scenic, but nice enough. We really enjoyed our lunch and would absolutely recommend.

Good portions. I had the fish and chips... nice big pieces, not too much batter, not cooked so the fish was dry. Good value. My friend had one of the salads... she liked it and brought half home. I thought the service was good, the prices good (not cheap, but decent seafood never is... certainly as good or better than the other dockside more touristy restaurants) the vibe was a bit townie so that's a bonus... much rather be where the locals get it on than the tourists. Would definitely go back.

Went here tonight after whale watching, we we driving around looking for a place that didn't look fancy, and that had beer. This place fit the bill. I ordered the fish chowder, and it had huge chunks of fish and was good, but I wish it had more seasoning! I ordered the fish and chips plate, which was amazing. I have gotten it from other places but it is always so greasy and mainly you get batter. Here, they give you large portions of fried haddock and I LOVE that they have bottles of tartar sauce so you don't have to keep asking for more The only negative thing was the coleslaw. Mine tasted sorta funky- and i love coleslaw.. The service was excellent, my waitress was really nice, had perfect timing, and even moved us when I asked to switch to a different table because of the people sitting next to us smoking (we were outside on the deck and 3 people behind us lit up cig after cig the entire time..not my thing!). The view was really nice, and they have cheap good beer on tap! I would like to come here again- some of their seafood pasta dishes sounded nice! Oh, and my BF got a clam plate that was heaping...and very delicious and well-priced for the portions.

"I'll have the blandest thing on the menu," is the quote that came to mind when we had lunch here today. It looked like a dive place or tourist trap but I looked it up on here and thought the food would be good. We had lobster mac n cheese and the 'signature' baked seafood casserole along with oysters. The service was poor. The food was nearly flavorless. We were not served bread with our meal but when I looked around at other tables where entrees had been served, they had baskets of bread. The baked potato with the casserole was served with ... nothing! I had to wait 10 minutes for another person to come over and ask if everything was ok before I could get butter- I'm not sure where our waiter was. I asked for water without ice - the waiter brought water with cups full of ice. The oysters were ok but were served without any sauce until we asked for it and we didn't even have plates or silverware when they arrived. Maybe tourists who come here love it but our experience was so awful that I am not sure I would go back.

Made reservations for 615,arrived and was told that we had to wait at least 10 minutes for the table to be ready, they were waiting for another table to get up. We sat down and they took our drink orders, the lemon in our drink had mold on it which we didn't discover until after it was finished. We asked for sugar for the iced tea which took several minutes to arrive. Most of the food was good, the clam chowder and lobster bisque were good. The seafood casserole arrived with all scallops, no haddock (which was supposed to be in there) and only one shrimp. Overall it was a very disappointing experience. They did give us the seafood casserole for free and asked if they could bring us teh correct meal, but by the time the waiter got around to asking us how the meal was, everyone else was mostly finished so we did not want to wait for the meal we ordered. Overall I was very disappointed in this restaurant, will not be returning.

Best seafood, fresh, tasty batter. Good service. They are great with kids. Outdoor bar for the nice weather and plentiful parking. I was destroyed to hear they close in the winter - although I completely understand. We'll be back for your April opening Carlo! Don't miss this place!!

Captain Carlo's is so many things to me ... most of them good. It's an establishment with generous owners who are continuously contributing to the city, whether they're sponsoring fundraisers or supporting a local softball team (for example). It's the ideal terminus for an all-day-and-night Gloucester pub crawl. It's one of the best places in town to get seafood (and diners should only order seafood). It's the best place for a young man to be drinking his gin on a summer's night. It's the place I run to when I've agreed to see a friend's band play at Jazzy Joe's but just can't suffer another moment in that shithole and have to sneak out at intermission. The drinks are reasonably priced. The bartenders are slow and will serve the townies (at least 80% of the clientele, on any given night) twice before getting to the stranger once. On summer weekends, there are usually decent jam bands playing on the outdoor stage. Gloucester-bound vacationers: This should be your #1 stop for boozing. P.S. Whoopi's stint moonlighting as a bartender is done. For those reviewers who delighted in her C-list celebrity presence, my condolences. For those of us who got attitude and slow-as-molasses service, huzzah. For the unfortunate few who let there celebri-lust get the best of them and asked for an autograph or tried to steal a photo opp, ding-dong the bitch is dead (not actually dead but ...) and the aggressive Gloucester fuzz that used to swarm and demand the memory cards from digital cameras have returned to the business of DD quality control and adultery.

This place is our go to place when we go to Gloucester for seafood because the seafood is always consistently good and fresh. This may have a lot to do with the fact from what we understand, the owner also runs the seafood auction house next door. On our most recent visit, we had the scallops and bacon and the fried calamari as an appetizer. We were a bit disappointed by the scallops and bacon - very small sized scallops and overcooked bacon for the price charged (hence the minus one star from what would have been a 5 star rating). However, the fried calamari more than made up for it with a huge portion which was succulent and sweet! For our main entrees with both had the yellowfin tuna, done cajun style. All I can say is wow, I don't think I have had a better or fresher piece of tuna anywhere! Portion size for the fish was very generous, as were the sides. In past visits we've ordered the fisherman's platter (huge), fried scallops and clams, fish and chips, and all of it was excellent. Service was very attentive. Drinks are pretty good too...can't go wrong with the Narragansett tall boy cans for $3, and they make a heck of a margarita. We went back at the end of the day for another drink before we hit the road because we were parched, sat at the bar this time, and the bartender was great (A+ on the speed and service at the bar)! We'll be back soon Captain!

Good experience overall. The baked stuffed shrimp and fish and chips were delicious, and our waitress was friendly and shared local info with us when we had questions. Kids got pizza which was a little odd -- the dough was more like a flat cracker than normal pizza dough -- but they ate it so apparently it was tasty!

Food was very good and reasonably priced for the area and the portions. The chowder was delicious. The scallop po boy was massive and tasty, though a couple of the scallops (there were a ton) were a bit overcooked. Service was friendly but slow. We were sitting for quite a while before anyone came to take drink orders. Food was slow to come out as well and the server seemed very frazzled even though it wasn't particularly busy. The view was nice too. We didn't have anything from the bar, but the folks sitting at the bar seemed to be having a great time, the bartender was making them laugh, and the drinks looked tasty. We'd try it again if we're in the area.

Went there this past weekend on a Sunday night, after the St. Peter's Fiesta where I thankfully declined all the fried dough and other junk food. I *thought* that because it was literally on the dock next to the processing the center that it would be incredibly fresh fish. Service was prompt & pleasant, I sat at the bar. While I thought about haddock, decided to go w/ the sesame crusted tuna; got mixed veggies and baked potato w/ sour cream on the side. Tuna was good, tasted very fresh. And a very generous portion. But I guess I wasn't prepared for the tuna to be swimming in the wasabi ginger sauce; literally wallowing in it. I guess I should have asked a little more on its preparation. The wasabi was hot, so it added some flavor. Veggies were fine, little soggy. Skipped dessert. So for me it was good, hence the 3 stars.

Great atmosphere on a Saturday night, especially when the back patio is open and a live band is playing. Plenty of space and not crowded, despite there being lots of people. Drinks are reasonably priced and bartenders are attentive. Last call at 12:45am is a bummer though.

My review is more for the environment than the food. The food is ok, if you want seafood....if you only eat things from the land, you might want to just get a salad. The atmosphere is great. Summer nights and weekends are live and almost electric. And yes, you can often see Whoopi Goldberg tending bar (and man is she slow). She is a silent partner in the restaurant. Maybe I am biased because a 3rd cousin of mine is the operating partner, but this a visit to Capts for a few adult beverages is always a good time.

in terms of a bar, i've had to wait way too long to be served an overpriced beer, and that's year-round. it's a gloucester high school class of whenever reunion in there, too. i suppose if you're a tourist you'll get to know the coolest kids in town! SCORE! in terms of a restaurant, one time i got steak tips. i wanted them plain. they came out drowning helplessly in barbecue sauce. i have no problem with barbecue sauce (in fact, i'd like to drown in it myself once in awhile) but i didn't want it that night. we told the waitress and she said she'd get the chef to fix it. THEY RINSED THE SAUCE OFF AND THEN REHEATED THE TIPS. my perfectly medium rare tips came back closer to well done and were super dry. really, captain? if rinsing/wiping off sauce then reheating is common practice, fine. whatever. i'll just pioneer through eating something i didn't order next time. i'm not someone who sends food back anyway, but i was sort of peer pressured into it... actually, i'm pretty sure someone else at the table told the waitress my food was wrong, not me. i always feel like someone is going to doctor up my meal a la "waiting..." but hey, i didn't friggin order bbq sauce.

Good seafood at great prices. Our party of 8 waited an hour to be seated, but it was understandable as they were busy, and we enjoyed $3.50 draght beers to pass the time. Among the 8 of us we got orders of fried clams, fried fisherman's platter, baked haddock, fried haddock, grilled salmon, steak tips, and scallops sauteed with garlic lemon butter--all fresh, hot, and delicious. The baked entrees come with a potato of your choice and choice of salad or veggie of the day (asparagus in our case); the fried platters came with french fries and coleslaw. The servings were large enough that most of us had food to take home, and the prices were $5-10 less than other comprable places. The service was friendly and, though loud with everyone talking and Sat. night live music, it was a fun atmosphere. A good place to go for sure.

Captain Carlo's is a restaurant to be avoided! The wait staff is rude, and the hostesses are disorganized and inept. It seems amazing to me that with all the unemployment we have now, a restaurant like this can't find people who are willing to treat customers with courtesy and respect. The food is barely adequate -- not at all special. With so many other good restaurants in the area, there is no need to go to this chaotic, questionable place.

i was a bit hesitant about captain carlo's - first because i generally don't trust any restaurant with "captain" in the title. secondly, how do you know? there are so many restaurants in this touristy area, how could you possibly know what you were getting into? of course, the entire point of yelp... so...holy shit was this place delicious. the king crab was absolutely outstanding. it was even better than the lobster i ordered which was also terrific. the mussels, the clams, the swordfish all were so fresh and delicous. the swordfish particularly - even my brother (who has eaten a lot of fish in his day) said that it was the best swordfish he'd ever had. in addition to the outstanding seafood, the service was better than average and the patio was a great place to sit and relax after stuffing your face.

This place is great! So much fun to have an evening out with friends. I had the Seafood Marinara. I am sure they didn't cook all the seafood together for the same amount of time. The calamari was perfectly cook, very tender, not chewy at all. The shrimp and scallops as well. The presentation... hahahaha.... they lined up all mussels around the plate... looked like mini soldiers lining up .... pretty cool! They do have wine list.... not a super long one.... but we were able to pick the wine that we liked. One of my companies ordered Steak and Lobster. The lobster was awesome.... but just don't order any steak over there. Anyways....love this place!

If you're up here at the beach or whatnot, this is the best place to go in Gloucester for seafood. It's well-priced, good food, the waitstaff has always been extremely pleasant, and the drinks aren't too expensive. When friends and family come up for a trip, we always steer them here. The outside bar is nice, service was fast even on a very busy night while we waited for a table. It's open year-round - I love that!

Fresh seafood right on the Wharf. The outside bar in summer is great...and luckily has enough covering so seagulls overhead aren't an issue. Becomes a real "bar" enviornment after about 9:30 at night. Prices are pretty good for a water front place.

Captain Carlo's is actually a restaurant where you can get really fresh seafood, great drinks and listen to music. In the summer you can sit outside under the tent. Later in the evening, it turns into the "go to" place and on some nights Whoopie Goldberg actually tends bars for her friends who own the place. Rumor has that she really likes it because everyone just treats her like anyother bartender. I've never seen anyone make a fuss or ask her for an autograph...but I'm sure people do.
