Having family in Chelsea we have passed by this bagel shop a million times and I have never had the chance to stop in. Today we decided it would be the day and we are happy that we didn't pass this place up. This tiny shop was packed when we arrived but the staff was quick to get people in and out. The bagels here looked delicious so we bought some bagels and cream cheese as well as a few pizza bagels. Everything we bought was great and we are happy that we stopped here. The bagels were perfect and this will be a go-to location in the future while in the city.

Fantastic bagels- crisp on the outside, doughy on the inside. And their cream cheese is phenomenal! The small container is enough for 3 or 4 bagels. Definitely worth a stop

I grew up eating Katz' bagels in the 1960's-1980's (Bubbe & Zayde lived in Chelsea) and I always make the pilgrimage back to Chelsea for bagels (I now live in Utah). Last week I went back and Katz did not disappoint. Still fantastic! I special ordered a dozen salt bagels to bring back to my husband. The counter person - Dave - was great. Gave him a hug and I can't wait for my next visit. This place is a treasure and feeds my Jewish soul.

Now these are actually excellent bagels. I don't know how the heck they do it, and it ain't that easy to get there, but this is genuinely an excellent bagel. If anyone can find any better in the Boston area, please let me know! 'Cause these are hard to beat.

I love Katz bagels and always have but the older gentleman that works there is so rude like seriously I really don't know how people still go there the bagels of course but he is so rude makes me feel so uncomfortable I go in today and the guy is shaking his head at me and just being really rude never will I go in there again and trust me I've been spreading the word

Some of my favorite places do one thing, but they do it very well. Regina Pizza, Cherry Hill ice cream, Russo's Candies. Katz is another to add to the list. All they make are bagels, and what a job they do! The bagels have that nice crunch on the outside with a pleasant chew inside. If you're lucky enough to get them warm from the oven, it's bagel heaven. No cream cheese necessary. They also have bagel dogs, a nice sized hot dog wrapped in bagel dough, and pizza bagels. I'll tell you that their pizza bagels are better than 99 percent of the delivery joints. There are a couple of caveats. Customer service is not their forte, so don't expect pleasantries (think New Deal or Durgin Park). And their assortment is very small. so you might not get your favorite when you come in. All in all it's five stars because of their product. Some sass is acceptable.

Perfect bagels! All the places advertising NY bagels need to learn a thing or two from he people behind Katz. We went around 10AM on a Saturday and there was no line at all but he mentioned that there was a line out the door a little earlier. There's no seating inside but you can go eat at the nearby park or just find a bench closeby if you're just getting a quick meal. These guys (or girls) seem pretty focused. No eggs and bacon, no cheese, no toasting of bagels (but the bagels are so nice and warm that they don't need toasting) but this is a good thing because the little they do they do extremely well. The bagels are that perfect harder on the outside and pillow soft on the inside. What to try? Any of the cream cheese is excellent but the lox was particularly good if you're into salmon and all that otherwise you can keep it simple and go plain -- the cream cheese isn't too thick it was perfect. Had the pizza bagel just to try and while it was good I'll probably just stick to a normal bagel next time we come here. Lastly, we saw some reviewers on here saying the people aren't nice. Def was NOT our experience -- the guy was extremely nice especially for some out-of-towners like ourselves. The only con: they don't sell Snapple there. Can't wait to come back.

I went into Katz bagels today for the first time. I heard they had great bagels and might be closing down soon. When I inquired about this to the guy behind the counter he started cussing and told me to tell people to "shut their f***ing mouths." I have been in the service industry a long time and found this very unacceptable. While their bagels were pretty good for the area that we live in, I will never return because of the audacity of that guy. It seemed like he did not care about his customers and only wanted to sell. Well when asked about this place I will say I cannot recommend it. I would rather get my bagels shipped in from my family in Long Island. At least it does not come with a side of rudeness.

Katz Bagels Shop is the only reason I look forward to my Saturday mri whenever its scheduled at Chelsea location. My visit today was very pleasant since i thought i missed out when Yelp said they closes at noon on Sat. What a surprise when we decided to swing by there just to try our luck. Yay! It was around 2:30 and they're still open! The owner is very pleasant and patient with my undecisiveness. If it was up to me, it's half a dozen of each items! On this trip, I went against my man's suggestion and definition of "not too much, there's just the 2 of us at home ...1/2 dozen". We came out with: Bakers Dozen (a blueberry, a marble, 2 plain, the rest... egg bagels. I think he gave us more)...a tub of his freshly made cream cheese , pizza bagel, and a half moon cookie! Hmmm...top notch freshness authentic bagels! The bagels are done the right way by their old family traditional method...no preservatives! So smarten up ppl...when you bring these goodies home, i suggest use a plastic bag n seal up some..tightly at room temperature for up to a few days. If i am to leave them in its paper bag, it'll just dries the interior, eventually. I also put the rest in the freezer in a zip lock bag (pre-sliced!!!). Trust me, when you toast it back, it gets back its moist interior n crisp exterior. Do not put it in the fridge..that'll just dries it up! Now..this is a trip (for a mri) worth driving for!

It's a blessing and curse to live so close to this place! They know how to hand craft a perfectly crisp, chewy, flavorful bagel. They have been around for a long time so If you are in the chelsea area this place is a must stop and It's worth the detour if you are not. Sadly They no longer make challah :( However the bagel pizzas, bagel dogs, black and whites and of course the bagels are wonderful. A plus they sell cream cheese (plain/chive/lox) and it's whipped extra plus plus. There's the usual bagel flavors ( love the onion) I just suggest knowing what you want before you approach the counter. If you don't you might catch a little attitude from behind the counter- you've been warned.

What on earth. Being a NY transplant to the Boston area, I've been searching far and wide for a good bagel. Unfortunately I have yet to find it. I walked in and was immediately assaulted by a bored employee, asking what "specialty" I'd like to try. He suggested some horrible combo with flavored cream cheese. I declined and placed my standard order- everything bagel with (plain) cream cheese. He asked if I wanted it toasted- what bagel shop asks that??? Are the bagels stale??? A fresh bagel should never be toasted, so of course I said no. He asked another two times, insisting I toast it- I should have walked out then. I waited a full 5 minutes for my order, which is insane. It finally came to me on a sheet of deli paper, no bag. The cream cheese was a solid slab of what looked to be Philadelphia- no whipped goodness here! And to add insult to injury, there were caraway seeds on it! The "bagel" itself tasted ok, I'll give it that much but it lacked the right texture and the cream cheese, toasting, and caraway seeds just ruined it. Additionally, the shop doesn't sell coffee (????) and you need to order ahead for a breakfast sandwich. Huge disappointment after all the great reviews I've read, but I guess I should know better at this point.

Fresh. Friendly. Fast. F-ing delicious. I went to Katz today for the first time after waking up with a major bagel craving and doing some yelp research. I am NOT sorry. I had a great experience and got a delicious, super fresh bagel out of it. I think I will start working toward being a regular here immediately.

The only bagel place worth visiting in MA. Worth noting the staff definitely aren't "warm" but mildly friendly. *Pizza bagels are amazing!

My family and I had the luxury of living down the street from Katz when I was growing up. I still go there even though it is a drive for me. They make the best bagels around and I don't think people realize that as Chelsea has changed over the years, Katz bagles has not. They are preservative free and not yout typical smooshy bagel you get everywhere else... They are true old world style bagles and must be eaten FRESH. When we were little our day old bagles would be frozen and given to teething babies. The Pizza bagles are amazing and so are the all beef kosher bagledogs. If you don't see them out... ask because they may have some in back for you! Do not get put off by the abrupt service and apparent lack of service. Trust me when I say that the personality is typical of the people from that area, and it is not personal. All their time and attention goes into their bagles and filling their many orders to other local food service places. (A little area history... That part of Chelsea was once the area where Polish/Russian Ukranian/ Jewish families lived. At the end of the street you will hit the East Boston bridge and my mom used to tell me stories of how at Passover the Jewish families would go to the bridge and toss coins into the water. When the tide went out the local kids would go down and gather the coins. My mother got in trouble for doing this! Also, the non Jewish kids could earn an easy 25 cents on Saturdays by going to a Jewish neighbor's house to light the Gas pilots so they could cook and have heat. Most of these families have moved from Chelsea sadly, but we all go back for Katz Bagles)

Best bagels on the east coast. They literally invented the pizza bagel. They are the last place I know of to still actually boil the bagels in a vat before baking...(new commercialised ovens use a steaming process and its not the same). Don't complain about freshness they don't use preservative s of any kind. Eat them quick or freeze em...duh...

Katz makes the best bagels! They have a great assortment and the cream cheese is made fresh from scratch and it is like nothing I've ever had! They also have pizza and hot dog bagels which are so yummy! Please, if you've ever had a dunkin donuts bagel or any coffee chain for that matter, you are missing out. You MUST TRY a Katz bagel. They are so warm and tasty! I can't get enough. Last I checked, they only took cash (not sure if that's changed) so be sure to have some! Everything is very affordable. It is a family owned business run by the father and son.

I'm from New Hampshire, but my dad is a Chelsea local, and has been a devoted customer to Katz for what seems like forever. My family is crazy for their bagels. Whenever we're in the area we stop by and grab at least a dozen bagels. Growing up they were my favorite treat. & The pizza bagels are the absolute best! Definitely worth a trip to Chelsea for!

The choices have always been Dunkin Donuts, Au Bon Pain, or Finagle Bagel if I'm looking to enjoy a bagel and cream cheese while I'm in Boston. Why? It's because that's really all there is and what I've known before joining Yelp and finding the hidden gems like Katz's Bagel Bakery. Sure, it's a bitch to get there if you're downtown- you have to go through tunnels or bridges, but it is absolutely 100% worth the trip. Now, I'm not going to say that Katz's is in the best neighborhood in the world - it's in Chelsea (which is like a step down from East Boston) - so expect it to be very diverse. There will be bodegas, laundromats, ethnic restaurants, and stores that still sell beepers everywhere. Most of the buildings look like they are falling apart - and thats just from the outside. But then, when you get to Katz's, you become less aware of your surroundings and focused on the food. There isn't a parking lot, so street parking is what you're going to get. You could always park at the sketchy fast food restaurant resembling some sort of spanish KFC right before the bakery, but who knows if they tow people. I opted for the everything bagel for my second breakfast that morning. The man running the shop - Jeremy? was quite the character. He was energetic and friendly. I asked for my bagel to be toasted and he called me a girl - because he insisted that the bagels were fresh out of the oven and still hot. He even had me feel it to prove it. But me, being the difficult customer, I still asked for it to be toasted - which he agreed to. My reasoning is that there is something about toasting an everything bagel that seems to bring out the flavors of all of the different seeds on there - makes it pop. I got mine with regular cream cheese on it - I can't even imagine what would be said if asked for it on the side. Prices were cheap, really cheap. I think it was about $2.22 for a single bagel with cream cheese. There isn't any seating like I had hoped there was, so I went to eat my bagel on the stoop on the side of the shop. It's almost like they want you to eat it there right on the street and believe me, you should because they are THAT good. The bagel was so flavorful and the cream cheese actually tasted real - not some poor excuse that is given to you at your local DD in the plastic cup. It was a pretty large size and actually filling. I told my boyfriend (who also enjoyed his onion bagel) that it was quite possibly the best bagel I have ever had in my life. Katz's has a decent variety - plain, egg, sesame, everything, jalapeño, and garlic (all I can think of at the moment - there may have been marble and cinnamon raisin too) and they did have some varieties of cream cheese. They also offer pizza bagels, hot dog bagels, and there is a cooler of drinks as well as a soda machine if you're thirsty. I am definitely making my way over here more often. It's probably best to go early so you get the fresh bagels right out of the oven - and beat the traffic.

I love Katz! Each time I have gone the person behind the counter is so friendly. I ordered a crazy amount of bagels and cream cheeses and drinks and only paid 20 bucks. The bagels are so good. I like to buy a ton and then freeze them so I can take one out and toast it up as I want to. I really hope they stay open because they are the bomb! Parking is easy and there is rarely a wait! No need to venture into the city for tasty bagels!

I recommend anything as a bagel lover: pizza bagels, honey wheat, plain, onion, garlic, their whoopsie pies, pigs in a blanket love this place. Not to mention they gave out free bagels on Mother's Day! How thoughtful

When you look from outside you don't expect much. When you walk in you smell bagels everywhere. There are different types to get too. The bagel pizzas are amazing!! Be careful though I bought five planning on giving one to someone, and saving the rest for other days. Oops I are four in one day... Yes they're that addictive.

Eh. Not up to the hype. Very limited options of bagels at 9:00am. No lox cream cheese available. Had to listen to the counter attendant talking about the "family problems". We were most certainly an inconvenience to him. Won't make the trip from NH again.

Delicious bagels & cream cheese. Curt but quaint servive. 5 stars for the chicken pot pie-ate the whole thing waiting for my bagel to toast. Soo tasty ...best I ever had.

Pretty good bagel! I had the garlic bagel and chive cream cheese. It would of been better if I was given the option to toast. The guy was nice enough to let me use my debit without a minim cap.

Ok so I had my first Katz experience today and was compelled to share the tale. My boyfriend and I woke up earlier than usual due to noisy neighbors, and decided to make the most of the extra time by driving from Cambridge over to Chelsea because I was really craving a pizza bagel and heard the ones at Katz are fantastic. We make the trek over only to see a sign on the door that says they're closed and all sold out. Devastating. I get out of the car just to look around and see if there's any other info for how this happened (FYI it was like 11:15 on a Sunday, they close at noon I think), and a young red headed guy comes out of the side door asking what I'm looking for. I was caught off guard and just say I'm just looking around, and he asks if I'm looking for bagels. I say actually yes, and he says he is in fact the bagel guy, but hates to say that they had a line around the block starting at 6 a.m. and now only have a few onion bagels left, nothing else. I could see that he honestly felt terrible! I explained we had come bc we heard such good things about their pizza bagels, but good to know it's so popular and we'll have to come back earlier next time. He then goes on to say that they have some extra frozen pizza bagels they could give me, but he understands I want the fresh, real thing and it's just not the same. At this point my boyfriend gets out of the car too, and this guy tells us that he wants to give us onion bagels and cream cheese fo' free! We say no a few times, but then give in, bc honestly why not? He invites us in the back, pulls out some bagels and cream cheese, and we find out that he is in fact Jeremy Katz, part of the Katz family. Bagel royalty right there. And the bagels were absolutely delicious. Above and beyond effort to make their customers happy, plus awesome bagels, and now they have fans for life. We'll be back for those pizza bagels for sure.

Just moved to East Boston with my girlfriend and decided to stop over to get a half dozen bagels. It's a small "hole-in-the -wall" bagel shop with HOT, soft and delicious bagels right out of the oven The gentleman that helped us out was very friendly. Definitely plan to keep coming here every weekend as it's hard to find a good bagel place in town that makes bagels this good! Their fresh chive cream cheese and lox cream cheese was amazing as well.

I've heard good things about their "World Famous" Pizza Bagel and did not feel the desire to order it at 9am on a Saturday morning. Be forewarned, that this is not a sit-down type place. This is a place where you get in and get out, no dilly-dallying, no chit-chatting, just order your bagel, pay the man and GTFO. At least that is the vibe I got on this particular Saturday. My fiance is a fan of food. So am I. He has a strong desire to drive distances to various places for a variety of food. I do not. He told me he wanted a bagel. I was thinking he'd walk down the street and get one at our local cafe. He did not want that kind of bagel. He wanted a Katz Bagel. I've learned that this place is pronounced "Kate's". I think that that's cool. I accompanied my fiance on the drive to Chelsea on a fine Saturday morning in March. I don't get to Chelsea much. Actually, I don't think I've ever been to Chelsea. We drove into Chelsea and went down some side streets and found a parking meter right across the street from Kate's. We didn't have a quarter to park but felt like we'd be in out in minutes and no one would be the wiser. We were greeted by a young man who was chatting on a cordless phone. "What you want?" I got flustered and just said a plain bagel. I kind of felt like how Chunk felt in The Goonies when he met the Fratellis. I then realized I wanted cream cheese. The guy looked annoyed at my request for it "on the side" and opened a fridge and gave me a HUMUNGOUS container of it and threw it in the bag that contained my (non-sliced) bagel. Then he left the bad on the counter. I feared taking it, but I meekly said "thanks" and my fiance placed his order. Bagel with lox and I don't know what else he said as I started to get nervous. A lady came in and lo and behold ordered the WORLD FAMOUS pizza bagel. I was perplexed as to who would want a pizza bagel in the morning but as the old commercial goes, "Pizza in the morning. Pizza in the eve'nin. Pizza at suppertime. When pizza's on a bagel...you can eat pizza anytime." And who was I to argue? I found it quite humorous that the young man working at Katz was obviously on the phone with a girlfriend and said to her "Yeah, it's crowded here, I gotta go." There was three people in the whole shop. Two of which were leaving (me and my better half) and one of which was just waiting for her pizza bagel. Service was brusque. But, liked it. No nonsense, get in and get out and go home. Next time I go back and that will be soon. I will be confident and ask for my plain bagel, sliced with cream cheese on it. The cream cheese was delicious. Light, airy, fluffy. My bagel was similar, very light, with a little crispiness on the outside and chewy in the inside. This ain't no Dunkin Donuts. This is real, homemade bagels. See you next time, guy!

This is our go to bagel shop on the weekends. We don't live too far away so I love shopping at a locally owned Chelsea business. I have not had a bad bagel from there. Quality is consistent with great doughy bagels in classic flavors. My favorite is the everything bagel as it is really covered in toppings, seasonings. On the weekends they also have bagel chips. Get them and try not to eat the whole bag over the weekend. Parking can be tough around there but spaces become available quickly. So you can eaily run in and out in this place as you grab your bagels for breakfast or a pizza bagel of lunch as you are on your way.

A classic. Perfect size, texture, taste. The egg and marble flavors, hard to find elsewhere, are exactly what bagels should taste like. The pizza bagels and hot dog bagels make a great and cheap lunch or snack. I was waited on by a sweet young lady, so I can't comment on the manners and moods of the owner. I also admit that I grew up eating these bagels, and so a healthy dose of nostalgia may be responsible for the fifth star. Still, I'm a New Yorker now, and I think a Katz's bagel is better than anything I can get at home. Seriously, I bought a dozen and popped them in the freezer.

Tire goes flat on the road as I pass by the shadiest strip club ever, King Arthur's Motel and Lounge and Adult Entertainment. As if the lounge and strip club aren't enough, there's a hotel too, of course there is, who wouldn't combine all three? All the drivers of the trucks and cars rumbling by this astonishing establishment must need a place for a couple of hours of wink wink nod nod - I've never seen a continuous train of 18 wheelers in either direction this long. Even pretending to be getting sleep at King Arthur's is ridiculous. Wait, did I say it's basically a brothel? There's more -what's that across the street? Oh, right Stardust Video, that's where I buy my pre-viewed porn. Get tire fixed - remove large screw from tire, plug hole with rubber, continue to Katz's Bagels. That's right, we're going to find a bagel. Katz's got the right stuff. Crispy outside, no need for toasting, still slightly warm. Nice and chewy on the inside. Obviously good quality dough goes a long way. Multiple flavors - egg, jalapeno, plain, sesame. No frills, no place to sit, hand mixed cream cheeses of several flavors, chive, veggie, plain. A half dozen bagels and an egg bagel cut with plain cream cheese was under $6. Delivery trucks and other commercial vehicles pull up and double park, run in and come out with their little brown bags of joy. Here's my recommendation: head up to Beacham St., stop in at King Arthur's for a quickie, on your way out, pick up some hot porn at Stardust Video to watch when you get home after picking up some bagels at Katz's to re-fill your battery after your hard workout!! Shit, I was pretty much in a sweat by the time I made it to Katz's.

This place has the best bagels in the Boston area! Go in with a smile and you might leave with more than you thought! Went in on this rainy morning, got three bagels and a whoopie pie for $5! Naturally left a 100% tip for awesome, sarcastic, service. No need to toast these bagels and I highly recommend the salmon and chive cream cheese on onion!! PS- don't mention Montreal bagels! They don't compare!

To give less then 5 stars is a crime. The Pizza Bagels are awesome! My only critique would be the hours...they close at around three pm....but they are up at 3am to provide delicious goodies.

A historical landmark of Chelsea, Katz Bagel Bakery is a must visit! I love the "everything" and "pizza" bagels. The homemade bagels are made in a small factory right behind the sales register. There is fresh cream cheese including a variety of flavors. The Orangina is an added bonus! The area surrounding Katz has really improved and developed and I often bring my family here and feel safe.

I grew up eating Katz's pizza bagels. When my mom asked what I wanted for Chanukah, I asked for Katz's. My mom is handicapped and when she called to ask them if someone could bring the bagels out to the car and she would pay cash, they offered to deliver the pizza bagels to Peabody same day! AMAZING customer service!!!! Oh yeah, did I mention I live in CA? Overnighted bagels were delicious!

Experienced my very first Hot Dog Bagel the other day. There were no surprises here, it's exactly as it sounds, a hot dog wrapped by a nice fresh made bagel. Though not as good as a Hush Puppy (a hot dog wrapped in a potato knish), it was good tasting and hit the spot. I ave also had the bagels here. They are some of the best bagels, NOT in New York. Can't wait to stop in and sample some more of their delicious baked goods.

I've been eating Katz bagels since I was old enough to each bagels - 40 years or so... It's the only place I know of to get a real bagel w/o visiting NYC. Cream cheese is great. Pizza bagels: one for the ride home, the rest for lunch, if they last that long. It's 6:15am on Saturday. I'm in Revere and can get to Katz in less than 10 mins. I'm just watching the clock...

The other day I spent ~$30 on bagels, chicken pot pies, pizza bagels, cookies, "hot dog bagels" and it was worth every penny! Everything was insanely delicious. This mom and pop hole in the wall is a true gem that is cherished by me and a lot of other people.

I have lived about 2 steps from Katz for almost a year. I finally took a trip over there when I ran out of any sort of breakfast item in my apartment. The bagels here are absolutely amazing. Slightly hard on the outside, perfectly soft and delicious on the inside. Bagels by themselves are $1 a piece - my first order was an everything bagel. It had a nice salty-ness to it as well. In fact, the breakfast was so good, I went back the next day. This time I tried it with their lox & chive cream cheese. It was so soft and full of flavor, and still only $3.75. If I was ever running late and needed breakfast, I'd grab coffee and a little something from Dunkins. Not anymore - Katz Bagels will be my new grab & go breakfast joint.

I remember eatin' pizza bagels fresh out of the oven when I was a kid from Katz, and I've been hooked ever since. I've even been asked to next day air a couple dozen to Israel (which I of course did) on a few occasions. BEST in the world in my opinion, and I don't think many would disagree...

Amazing bagels. Awful customer service. All you have to do is smile and smear some cream cheese on a bagel - apparently quite hard for some. Make some coffee and wear a smile :-)

Ever since moving to Medford I've been looking for a new bagel shop. You'll note that Katz's is not in Medford, yet I still drive there when I have a craving for a real bagel and hand-mixed chive cream cheese. This is not a coffee shop: they don't have coffee and they won't toast your bagel for you. All they will do is sell you the best bagels in the area. Go early or they might run out of the flavor you want. Make sure to eat your bagel right away, as these are not preservative-laden supermarket bagels, and they will be hard as a rock the next day.

We were so psyched to find a place to buy tasty bagels so close to home. We got 5 plain bagels and a marble with some plain cream cheese for about $7. the bagels were nice and chewy and the cream cheese was... well, creamy. We'll be back!

There is only one Katz. It's special, and it's a gem, This place is a bagel shop in the vein of Jewish NY bagel shops. It's something you just don't see in this region, and it's fantastic. I'll preface this by saying I'm biased because I grew up around the corner. I have been eating these bagels since I was a boy. First thing in the morning, and egg or pumpernickel from this place will teach an important lesson on what an excellent bagel is like. Get there early, because they run out; and to be honest- bagels taste better fresh. On top of the normal selection, the pizza bagels are just awesome as snacks or for a small lunch portion. The bagel chips are great, too. Oh, and it's pronounced to sound like "Kate's".

Ok, I get having an allegiance to regulars and being a little...quirky. That's all well and good with me. I reap the rewards of being a regular at places like Soundbites, I can handle some sass. But letting 3 people order multiple dozens before my (genuine Manhattan Jew!) girlfriend and I get ours is whack. Especially since 5 dozen later, all the damn bagels are gone! Don't get me wrong, the bagels are mighty fine. But this shit ain't worth it, especially when you were going to get a nice assortment of bagels but end up with two stupid (but admittedly delicious) egg bagels because that's all that's left after your 20 minute wait despite being the first in line. It'd be great if I could try some of the bagels I wanted to, so I could become a regular. But letting other people clean you out of the good flavors when it's my turn doesn't make me want to return or recommend you.

Wow Jewish NY bagels in MA! This place gets me so excited thinking about it and is a lil piece of home for a NY transplant I was a little hesitant going to Chelsea and especially in a corner store with a not so attractive outside. The bagel case is nothing fancy and at first glance the bagels dont look as big and fluffy as the ones at home. I was VERY disappointed when i realized they had no everything flavor bagels but I got onion bagel with chive cream cheese instead. The first bite was magical! Warm soft top layer, doughy center, and a nice crisp bottom. You can feel the chewiness with every bite and feel it melt with the cream cheese. Very impressed. My friend got a pizza bagel and said it was delicious, so I will deff try that next time. But deff check out if you miss NY because it rivals local bagel places at home.

Before writing this review, I hesitated. I wondered if I needed to be a Jew, know more Jews, or at least have a temple affiliation to understand the constitution of a good bagel. Sound ridiculous? Maybe to you, but I take Yelp(ing) seriously (and they appreciate that). So, I called my 85-year-old, Jewish uncle who was born and raised in Manhattan on bagels, lox, cream cheese, and chutzpah to explain my conundrum and asked, "Uncle Morty, what makes a great bagel?" His response was a bellowing question to my Catholic aunt in the other room, "Lovey, will you turn up my hearing aid? I think somebody wants to sell me eight Kegels - wholesale." He laughed so hard, he disconnected us. Then the line was busy for hours. Oh, well. Five stars!

Four stars for product. But... Dear Man Behind The Counter, You must be kinder to your customers. I'm a card-carrying member of the tribe and you failed to recognize or appreciate me. When I called you on the phone to see if you were open, you said you would be open 'til 1:30. That confused me because it was 2 p.m. and you were still taking calls. By the time I figured out you meant 1:30 in the morning, you already hung up the jack. (Lots of people craving bagels at 1:30 a.m., I bet.) And it wasn't the "this conversation is winding down" type of hang-up, but the "hope you don't have any more questions" kind. This hurt me, Mr. Katz. Further compounding the issue was the poor customer service I received the last time I patroned this bagel hole. (Do you like my word play? I'm a deft and creative writer.) You are quite blunt, as far as I can tell, Mr. Katz. That's fine. We can have a brief conversation, I don't want to talk your ear off, believe me. Give me your bagels and I will leave. But whenever I enter an eatery for the first time, I like to ask questions. It's a knee-jerk reaction. I walk in and ask for the time out of habit. I can't help myself. But back to my point. There is a line, between blunt and rude. Between my first visit and the call I placed, I'm under the impression that you fail to respect this line. That annoys me as a customer. Why am I doling out four stars? The bagels are spot-on. If I had grounds to fault the bagels, I assure you, I would. Their cream cheese is fluffy and airy. If you've ever had Breakstone's Temp Tee cream cheese, you will find Katz's offering familiar. Also, Mr. Katz, you weren't that rude when I came in the second time. And you asked me if I wanted a plastic knife. It's the little things, Mr. Katz. If, upon my third visit, I am treated kindly, I plan to go here as long as I feel welcomed. However, if upon my third visit I'm greeted by more of the same, there will be Yelp hell to pay. And I noted the Yelp sticker on the exterior, so I imagine this will reach you. Take it in stride.

This is a true Jewish Bagel Bakery. I have enjoyed these bagels my whole life! They are extremely fresh when you buy them on day one. After day one, you must slice & freeze them to enjoy on a later date. (They tell you that when you buy them). My brother and I lived in Florida for a couple of years and every-time my dad came down to visit, to ensure freshness, he'd vacuum seal a dozen (baker's dozen, if you will) for each of us. What a guy!

People who did not grow up on old-fashioned NYC-style bagels (the small, hard water-boiled kind) -- here is some info. A properly made (boiled before baking) bagel is naturally small and dense, not puffy like a roll. The kind you are used to -- from Brueggers and other chains -- are not the "real" bagels of yore. Katz's sells the old-fashioned kind. Secondly, they go stale because once upon a time bread was bought and consumed on the same day. Katz's bagels have no preservatives or additives in them to keep them soft. This is normal. If you aren't going to eat them the day you buy them, you must slice them in half and freeze them in a ziplock. To eat, you toast them right out of the freezer. Finally, the rude service. I don't really care. This ain't Nordstrom's.

These are destination bagels. Make-a-special-trip bagels. I have been making dedicated trips to Katz since the early 90's when I has a job across the street. What keeps me coming back in particular are the legendary pizza bagels. There is simply no product, bakery or manufacturer out there who even remotely comes close to them. Chewy, with a stable and non-messy topping of delicious sauce and cheese. They mysteriously stay good for days on end, and I have yet to meet someone that isn't enthralled by them when they try them. There were times when I lived off them for days if not weeks on end. I cannot rate these pizza bagels any higher - they are perfect.

Best damned Bagel in Massachusetts. These are meant to be eaten when bought. Eat them warm when they are right out of the oven. They will go stale in a day. They are made without any ingredients to keep them fresh for a while. If preservatives and keeping them in your cabinet for a week is what you are looking for then Dunkins or Market Basket is down the street.

Best bagels around. Great for a quick breakfast, and you can't go wrong with a pizza bagel for lunch. Highly recommended.

I am self admittedly, a bagel addict. These bagels are by far, the best bagels I have EVER eaten. Un like my fellow yelpers, I have only received great counter service. However, I have heard enough stories to be cautious! Regardless, the counter help would literally have to spit on my Bagel in front of me for me to consider not returning. I usually buy 3 bagels, 1 to eat on my way home (I live 2 min away) one to eat when I get home, and 1 for my boyfriend if he is so lucky. The bagels are meant to be eaten right away, they do not keep well. So rather then disappoint yourself, do yourself a favor and eat these tasty bagels while they are fresh and warm from the oven. You will not regret this decision.

I have had many bagels in my life but Katz has the best. These babies blow away those NY bagels. The pizza bagels are superb. Try a bagel dog. There are about a dozen varieties all good. great cream chesses also

I tried the plain bagels and the marble ones. Right out of the oven, the plains were tasty, but the marbles were eh. The next day, they were both eh. My boyfriend commented that they tasted like Lenders. I'm still in search of the perfect bagel...

This is so sad because I go here every week and every week the old man that that waits on me is extremely rude. I wont go in this place anymore I usually spend 25 on bagels and then I get 5 of the cream cheeses. He never says hi to me or the people I bring in there and they always buy bagels and ects. The customer service here is the worst ever. I do not support this type of service at least say hi to me and thank you instead he says 'what do you want'....grr Ive been going here for 3 years but I just give up now.....

I'm a little bagel-ed out right now. I stopped in for a bagel for breakfast and ended up getting a pizza bagel for lunch. 2 bagels in a 4 hour time frame..my stomach is happy. The marble bagel I got was excellent. It was still warm from the oven. I got it with cream cheese. It was neatly put on it. The guy behind the counter was very friendly, when asking for light cream cheese, he said I didn't need it. Nice to hear as your starting your day with the carbs!! The pizza bagel was good. It's like a thick bottom half of one, without a hole and covered in sauce and cheese. Simple yet tasty. I could see the bagels being made in the back. They were chewier then ones I'm used to..say from any coffee shop who gets them from who knows where. Then again, these were freshly made a few feet away, which is unbeatable. Prices were very low. For a bagel with cc for breakfast, a pizza bagel for lunch, and a large coffee, only $5!! I'm a fan!

I want to start this review by saying: A. I don't usually eat bagels, not because I don't LOVE them, but they are a way boatload of bread for a gal in one sitting, and B. I don't make it a habit to eat things with food coloring...But when my next door neighbor brought over GREEN bagel's from Katz for St. Patrick's Day, with fresh scallion cream cheese, I gave in, and OH MY GOD. How could something so simple, bagel and cream cheese, be so sublimely delicious?? I would have eaten more if she had given me more than two-I ate one, my seven year old son ate one, and we both pined for more. A seven year old belly can barely fit one bagel, so you know it must have been amazing for him to be scanning the kitchen like a bagel shark on the prowl. I googled Katz and read all these reviews...scary Katz-bagel-man-service be dammed... I am going there next weekend!

One of the first times I went to Katz I got a half dozen bagels and walked out of the store with them only to fall down and see my precious cargo roll into the road and get squashed! The man at Katz saw all this happen and came out to help me up and gave me another sack full of bagels. What a nice guy! Sometimes he can be a little gruff, but he's a nice man. Once he knows you're a regular, he definitely takes care of you and loosens up a bit. The bagels are somewhat crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The egg and the garlic are very good and the raisin are delicious too. Their cream cheese is whipped nicely and is of good quality. I never have a problem finding a parking spot right outside and since it's on the way home, Friday night pickups of my weekend indulgence is extremely convenient. I know of no other great bagel place this side of the bridge so I would strongly recommend that if you can get here, visit them.

This was yet one place on a rather small list of place we were told we had to try when moving to Chelsea. The place isn't in the best location, but the bagels are good. My girlfriend and I ended up splitting a plain and pizza bagel. Both we very good. I'm not a huge bagel fan, but this was light and fluffy.

Perhaps the best damn bagel in all of New England. Nuff said, especially coming from a Jew from NY. But why is it in Chelsea?! Just one of life's mysteries I guess.

Only one bagel shop in my life gets 5 stars (Sonny's Bagels, South Orange, NJ). This one is a close second. I'm glad I discovered it! They have pumpernickel which is my fav and who doesn't like a pizza bagel?!

If you haven't had a bagel from Katz's you haven't had a real bagel. I remember growing up and going there at 2 am on a Sunday morning and there would be all kinds of people buying bagels. Early on you could buy Katz's bagels in most small grocery stores at the deli counter. they are legend in the area and, I hope stay in business for years to come. They have a secret recipe that I think is worth millions. Go and try them you wont be sorry. Don't worry about Mr. Personality he really can be nice. He must just get tired working long hours. .

Great bagels. It is very traditional and not much of a place to look at but you can't go wrong. The hot dog and pizza bagels are a must try. I moved away from the area but whenever I'm around I go and grab a 1/2 dozen and couple hot dog and pizza bagels. Can't compare to the chain crap like Dunkin or Panera. Bruegger's is still OK.

I made the long (1.5 mile) trek here for the first time Saturday morning. I had read the reviews and my wife and I were craving a "real" bagel and decided that this could be it. I walked in to a small, dirty store front (I can deal with small, I can even deal with dirty as long as I am confident that behind the scenes is sanitary). There were three people in the store and nobody behind the counter. The gentleman closest to the counter got to go first when the young man (the one from all the pictures on the wall, so I assume he is a "Katz" descendent) came out from the back room. This first customer placed his order, much to the chagrin of "Mr. Katz." The order was begrudgingly fulfilled and the payment was promptly requested (I can deal with promptness, it's succinct and I like that). When the customer held up a twenty and told him he had 50 cents to make up the change, "Mr Katz" snatched the twenty out of his hand, picked up his cell phone and turned his back to make change, all the while the customer is yelling to him that he "has 50 cents to make the change" and "Mr. Katz" will not pay attention to him. I watch this exchange and think, "ok, this is just the way it is, do I agree with it?..no, but if these bagels are as good as everyone says they are, I'm going to get my dozen and get out of there" As the next two customers place their orders, with the same rude service, I peruse the selection. Four half filled baskets with, Sesame, marble, plain and cheddar. Granted those weren't the flavors I was hoping for, but I am open to suggestion by what is fresh. When another customer questioned "are there any other bagels, you know, in the back?", I felt that is a fair question seeing as we were in a bagel shop and there were only four options. The response was what made me leave. He wasn't joking, he wasn't being sarcastic, "Mr. Katz" was being himself and I can say, from my 5 minutes or so that I've spent with the man, he is not a happy person. "That's all we got, you want more, go somewhere else." Had she been asking for a chive, sun-dried tomato and goat cheese bagel i could be more OK with a snide response (not that I would think it warranted), but a snide and downright rude response for simply asking if there were more that four flavors of bagels was uncalled for. Maybe there are times when the bagels here are plentiful, maybe there are some other Katz family members who know how to talk to customers, people, anyone, but I didn't see that on this encounter. Unfortunately, maybe for me, I haven't had a Katz bagel and probably never will.

Seriously ... how can anyone compare these to a good NY style bagel. Was everyone going to Dunkin Donuts for their bagels because these are only about a half step above those bread bagels. The service is horrible, I don't care for the "Soup Nazi" style attitude. The were hard as rubber on the outside and crumbly bread-like on the inside. Not a true bagel by any standards. Don't waste the trip. Bagel World in Danvers is probably the best right now unless someone has a time machine to bring me back to 1990 for some old school Finagle Bagels before they went corporate.

solid. raised on Zabars and H&H, New York born, Jersey bred, and I say, 'solid', any usual gruffness has no effect on me, you been to new york? I asked, 'No Salt?" meaning bagels, 'Doctor said it was bad for my health' said the man who bakes the bagels and sells em' Owner/Baker/Maker on the premises. Sunday morning, early, even the drive down 16 into Chelsea was pleasant. Warm bags of bagels, that have the bite on the outside, chewy/dense on the inside, good on ya.

I have lived in Chelsea all my life and I am happy to give our local bagel place 5 stars! The bagels are always fresh, and just the way a bagel should be. A little hard on the outside and softer on the inside, thats the difference between a real bagel and a roll with a hole cut out of the middle. I like to have my egg bagel with half normal cream cheese and half chives cream cheese, unbelievable. The pizza bagels are fantastic, and the hot dog bagels are pretty good too. 15 years ago I injured my leg and was holed up in a hospital in Boston for a few days and still remember my parents bringing me a Katz pizza bagel , what a great surprise.

How have I lived in the area for more than three years and never gone to Katz? I mean, I've driven by it many times, but I never went in. Today that changed, and I am so glad for that! The bagels were DIVINE. They were definitely on par with the best I've had in NYC, and they were all hot out of the oven! Fantastic. I felt kind of stupid for asking the dude to toast/schmear it and hearing his reasoning for not doing so, but at least now I know that I must just eat it sans toasting and put the cream cheese on myself in the car. The boy had a pizza bagel which was still piping hot. Katz is one hell of a find, and it's only about 7 minutes from my house. Awesome.

Hard to find a good bagel north of the city but these are pretty good. The best $1.50 you'll spend. Tiny little corner shop in [economic] war torn Chelsea. Bagels are smaller and taller than what you normally get. Not a huge variety but what they have is good. I like the onion. Cream cheese is quite good. I've been here a few times in the am and have always found a parking spot. You can easily get back on the Tobin (southbound) from here. If you can't get to Bagel World in Salem or Peabody this is the next best thing.

great pizza bagels when they're hot...all the bagels are good when they are hot and not sitting there for a while the red head behind the counter is sure to drive business away. he's an arrogant f*ck

  • Robin G.

I only give this 4 stars, for now, because I haven't had their bagels in years but I grew up with them when I lived in Chelsea. I still remember them not only as the best bagels but they make pizza bagels that are to die for.

I am bagel picky. There's a lot of bagels out there I don't like, these bagels do not fall into that category though! These bagels are the kind you don't even need toasted, they're delicious as is. A few pieces of advice for those going for the first time: They don't put cream cheese on bagels on the weekend. They did it for us, but with the warning that they don't usually. Next time I know to just order bagels and a tub of cream cheese! You might have to make a couple trips around the block to find parking. There's a good chance you could become addicted. I'm thinking of going back this weekend.

My favorite bagels ever! They are small and delicious. Honey wheat is the best, then sesame. Katz's sells lox and cream chese, also. They have maybe 8 or 10 flavors of bagels. They also do good bagel pizzas and half moons. Parking can be tough. I think they stay open late on Friday and Saturday nights.

Great bagels, especially when hot. They do go bad fast, so freeze immediately if you buy a bunch. Also big fan of the lox cream cheese.

I grew up on this babies. They are the best bagels ever. It's an amazing thing when you can get them right out of the oven. Mmm, they're all warm and crispy. I love the marble and of course the plain. They have all sorts of random little cakes and cookies and spreads to go with your bagels. I don't eat them anymore, but I HIGHLY recommend the pizza bagels. There's nothing else like them.

  • Alyssa N.

I dream of the black and white cookies here. They're totally worth a trip over the rather confusing Tobin Bridge. That bagels are superb too, satisfying my NY bagel snob palette.

  • Bruce S.

Between Katz's and Bagel World, I think these are the two best local bagels. The Katz bagels are smaller and more what I have come to think of as "Boston-style." I grew up in NYC, but I think a good bagel is a good bagel no matter where you are. And Katz, he makes a good bagel. I haven't been there in a while, but now after reading all these reviews, I will just have to find an excuse to go into Chelsea!
