I recently rented out Flat Top Johnny's for a company holiday party and it was a serious hit! The event went off smoothly and everyone was very pleased. As for planning, John was very responsive and capable and a joy to work with. We will definitely return!

Free pool after 9 PM on Wednesdays. Half price pool for ladies after 9 PM (always?). Sorry ftj - your boneless buffalo wings are no longer the best. It was pretty busy last night (Saturday), so that was a nice surprise. People were ordering the Yucca and Linguicia left and right, but in general, the food still sucks. Bad. Tequila is quite an upper.

Old pool tables that are heavily abused, but they have a lot of them, and the food and beer is decent. We love the regular staff! NOTE: currently closed for repair of water damage from building fire on Aug 31 2015. Looks like it might be some months before it reopens.

This place seems to be going through an awful transition. With that said, the new GM has fired some of good people that have worked at FTJs for years. Unsure behind the reasoning and all but all the regulars who come to this place are fairly upset with recent 'purge' of beloved bartenders that have made that place iconic. The plus side is that they added more benches outside, the crappy side is that this place still attracts the low-end crowd from Cambridge. You know the ones that roll in packs of 10-15 people, take up 3 tables and only order cheap beers like Coors & PBR? Yeah, the crowd that's constantly being loud and barely spending any money at FTJs. Why not raise the prices and get rid of hipster cheap booze that attracts the stingiest of customers? You got a great location, learn to use it if you care about business development.

If all you want is to grab some pitchers of beer with friends and play some pool, this is your place. If you want food, I'd go somewhere else first and then come here. We ordered a bunch of appetizers (all standard, greasy bar fare) and it was all okay (not great, but standard). The chicken tenders were kind of dry, but that's no big deal. The only thing that really lost them a star here is my burger was burnt (as was everyone else's). And by burnt I mean pretty much inedible even after our pitchers of beer were gone! That being said, if I ignored the burger fiasco and rated it on atmosphere and prices alone it would get 3 stars. Definitely a lot of pool tables, a decently fun atmosphere, and reasonably priced pitchers of good beers. I'll be back - just not for food!

Nice place to come play games (pool, darts, pinball), drink beer and mingle! I really like the standing-around-while-watching pool games vibe, as well as the excellent service they have here. Food- is awesome! Very well taken care of, and the burgers are delicious. I love it here. Drinks- $6/7 for IPAs and local beers. Nice selection. Transportation: close to Kendall and Central. Place to come and have fun!

I have been shooting pool at Flat Top Johnny's since the mid-nineties. The beer selection is always good, and the staff is always friendly. However, my sole complaint is kind of a major one: YOU ARE A POOL HALL. PURCHASE MORE POOL STICKS. We almost had to leave mid-game last night because someone grabbed our pool stick while one of us used the bathroom & the other put in a drink order. The funny thing is, there was still one vacant table & the other customers did not seem to be hogging the cues. There just aren't enough pool sticks. Good thing we aren't shy about approaching other folks to ask if they 'accidentally took our stick' and the person who did was kind enough to give it back rather than argue about it. He actually gave my husband a 'bro-hug' when we gave him our stick when we left. Good beer. Good crowd. But for the love of gawd - get more pool cues, please

Such a fun place! Great atmosphere and way more than just pool. Love to play darts when I am with a gang of folks but I skeeball and video golf is good for when I stop by impromptu. Texas nachos and regular nachos are must haves. Super friendly to the bicycle crowd too!

It is a great place for pay pool but it's encouraged to book / reserve ahead of time. However, I didn't like how they cranked up the music at around 8pm. We felt like we were at a live concert and it gave me a headache. They also have a nice drink list! They offer Down East Cider on draft and in can :)

Flat Top Johnny's was an overall very odd but not terrible experience. To start we went on a Friday evening around 8 with a group of 6. It was packed, fair, it's a Friday night and you have pool of course everyone wants to be there. Upon arrival you check in at the front desk to put your name in at a table. Since it's first come first serve for the tables there is no set time estimate for when a table will become available. Also fair, I understand that you can't really kick people off tables once they start playing. Cool we'll get drinks and wait. To the bar.... The poor bartenders here. They had one bartender and one barback/food runner behind the bar. The wait for a drink was a while.... I wasn't timing it or anything, but to put it in perspective in the time it took my friend to get a round I had time to go the bathroom and take a phone call. And while we are on it, let's talk about the bathrooms... Since the bar is in an office building they share the lobby/bathrooms with the building. This means you exit the bar and walk down the white tile florescent lighting hallway to the bathrooms while the office security guards stare you down. Positive side, the bathrooms are clean, but this is an overall a delightfully sobering experience. Anyways, back to the bar..... The bartenders were hustling and friendly so no fault with them, and we did eventually get our drinks. Also we took a chance on ordering poutine, and despite no discernible way for the food runner to find tables we did get our food. And it was as good as cheese fries can be, but a warning to any poutine snobs it is more of a cheese fry nacho dish than actual poutine. And in this time we get called for a table, horay! Wait no, they called our number and passed over us... even though we were sitting literally right in front of the pool host's area. But it's ok, there is another table, whoo! That was close. But we get to the table and they had no pool cues left... I went to the front desk to ask if there was a secret stash only to be informed they were on back order and I should ask other tables. But it's ok, I asked a kindly table to share and they gave me a cue, victory? Let the games have commenced! Once at the tables with a cue secured, it was all the fun one can expect with a game of pool. The game area also had a waitress to come around for drink orders which was cool and convenient AND she had a touch screen ordering system that let you split the bill nicely when it was time to pay up, super convenient for a group. Although fun was had by all at the end of the night, I would not come running back. And given the fact that the place was packed, I'm pretty sure they really care if I do or not. I would overall recommend this place if you are in your early twenties, don't mind a crowd, and don't want anything fancy. Otherwise, proceed with caution on the weekends, and maybe more reckless abandon on the weekdays.

I've been there a number of times and it's always the same. If you're hungry, don't go. It takes a long time to get your food. However, the Maple Donut Burger is amazing. The bartenders are more concerned with keeping the bar clean, instead of getting you a drink. From drink 1 to the last, you feel like you are an inconvenience to the bar staff. The pool tables are excellent for a group of friends. Not the best kept, but you can't beat $12 and hour. On a Friday, you will have to wait awhile. But, that's anywhere. Do go, to check out the donut burger (exclusively available on Friday Nights), if you want a place to hang out with a couple buddies, other places are closed. Don't go, on a first date, with a group of people unsure of their intentions, want to talk without yelling, you're hungry and need food asap.

An awesome after-work spot that is conveniently located off of the red line. FTJ offers a variety of fun things to do, including their hallmark pool area, pinball machines, and arcade games. It's a comfortable space that caters to a wide range of people. You'll see a mixture of young working professionals, hipster types, punk rockers, and older folks all in the same space. The welcoming atmosphere and diversity are refreshing. The food is largely hit-or-miss - but the expectation should be set at standard bar fare. The service is nothing to complain about, nothing to write home about either. Be careful - we booked an event as a group and we found that the bill included several extras that we didn't order. Aside from the error in billing (which was later fixed by management), staff were prepared to handle our group. The food was already laid out when we got there; and staff were friendly and helpful in taking drink orders. The only major complaint is that pool cues are in short supply during peak hours. This is something that rarely happens at other venues, such as Jillian's. Our group ended up sharing pool cues. Not a big deal but it's also something that should be addressed. The bar area gets really crowded during peak hours, and it's an obstacle course to get to the restrooms. This is awesome for large groups of friends or corporate events. I definitely plan to go back!

Best pool tables in the area with a pretty decent hourly rate before 6p. Beer selection is o-kay. Seems to be one or two guaranteed decent craft beers on tap at all times. The music is definitely chill. The food is TERRIBLE - Eat elsewhere either before or after.

  • Brittany B.

I enjoyed playing some pool and dining here with friends. The fries are amazing, and my veggie burger was excellent. However I do wish there was more variety on the menu. The music is mostly rock and independent-alternative genres. There are some tournaments going on, which mostly attract middle aged men, but the rest of the crowd seemed to be young professionals on the night that I visited. Overall, you can't beat cheap pool and good atmosphere. Would visit again!

The place is huge and comfy and the staff are friendly too. The best part is that they have so many pool tables AND Dart boards (Wohoooo!!!) I was so glad to find this place in Cambridge. However, it is a bit expensive and the pool tables were really dirty. There was dirt on each tables. They need to clean the pool tables and maintain them!

What a great spot! Recently I was tasked with setting up a work celebration for my team (about 30 people). After looking around the area near the office, Flat Top Johnny's seemed to be a perfect spot. I called, and the staff was friendly and more than happy to help me set up this little event. I was able to reserve several pool tables, pre-order some appetizers to be ready for the team as well as set up a bar tab for the team to draw from. The pool tables really take center stage at FTJ's. They are well maintained and there was no lacking for pool cues nor chalk. The bar staff was friendly and never too far or busy to make sure my team's thirst was quenched. There were many beer selections on tap as well as a full bar - I'm confident there's something for every taste here. Now for my favorite part - the food. We ordered some onion rings, buffalo tenders, jalapeno poppers, hummus and texas nachos. Each dish was great and were quickly consumed by myself and my team... but I feel I must draw attention to the texas nachos. This is a wonderfully glorious pile of french fries, melted cheese, pulled pork and a sweet BBQ sauce. If this were not a team event, I have no doubt i'd have eaten the entire plate of texas nachos myself. In fact, as I type this, i'm trying to figure out how to get a plate of these in front of me ASAP.

Cheap-ish beer and an okay price on tables. The staff is friendly and the customers are nice to people new to the area. I liked that the bar also has an area to play darts when you are waiting for a table. The food isn't great, but that's okay for a no-frills bar.

Things you will love: - The decor & lighting. There is an awesome full wall mural at the back with a Roy Lichtenstein looking piece that is refreshing and so hip. The lighting is sultry and their tables just got re-upholstered with a fresh, fresh RED. - The music. They don't play crap hip-hop or Taylor Swift, guys. Think more like Muse & Radiohead. Nothing like a good song to deceive you into thinking you are much better at pool than you actually are. - The drinks. Their beer selection isn't limited to crap and they have a cider that is to die for. The food's not bad either! $5 gets you like...a BUCKET of french fries. But most importantly, you will love the service. A few minutes past your hourly rate? No biggie, there's a 15 minute grace period. Your burger took longer than usual to make? Its on the house. Small mistake on your bill? A full refund for your entire 2 hours worth of pool. Stop reading this. Go play pool.

The food and service here is terrible. Our waitress had a snarl on her face the entire time and was extremely slow. The food reminded me of my elementary school cafeteria. The only saving grace about this place is that it's a nice hangout spot with pool tables, darts, and some pinball machines. Otherwise, if you're looking for a bite, try somewhere else unless you miss those good old days of being a second grader.

Went here last night for the first time. It's about a 1/2 mile walk from the Kendall T station which is cruel when it's a super cold day in the winter, but it's in the area next to Cambridge Brewing Company and other restaurants and coffee houses - so lots to check out. They don't have a ton of vegan and vegetarian options but they do have a hummus plate appetizer (the hummus taste like store bought hummus, nothing special and they don't give you enough pita. I wish they would give you carrots and celery too), 2 salads, fries, onion rings, wet nachos (veggies, just hold off the cheese and sour cream). They also have a veggie burger that the server said was vegan ingredient wise (both the burger and bun). It was really good, tasted home made. It also comes with avocado and hummus, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and a side of fries (fries are really good and hot). The server said they don't call it vegan because they cook it in the same oil that they cook their chicken in. Personally I don't care about that too much so long as there are no actual animal ingredients in my burger and it doesn't taste like chicken (which it didn't). They should just get a different grill/fryer/pan whatever they use so they can def say it's vegan. I wanted more than just carbs so I got the veggie burger. The place has good pool tables in the back if you want to play with some friends and the servers will go back there to take your order. There is also lots of seating and tables up front and a bar and more seating around the corner. I really liked the chalk board shark mural. The bathrooms are outside in the hallway - which I guess they share with other businesses. They have a great selection of beer and cider, as well as other drink cocktails. Unfortunately they don't have any hot drinks (besides hot toddy's) and they don't carry agave. I really needed a hot drink but didn't get it because of the honey. They were playing some good music (Rancid, The Clash, etc.) while we were there which is always appreciated.

oh man! i didn't even know I haven't reviewed flat top johnny's! I love this place. I went on a s. a. t. u. r... d. a. y. night (saturday night) and about half the tables were open. The music was great, a lot of mumford and sons, the ataris, what sounded like some incubus. It was great. I felt like my ipod was the DJ. Nothing super fancy about this place, I love the layout. The pool cues aren't wicked warped. Adjacent parking garage is only $5 on the weekend, super convenient. want to go? I need to shoot pool again!

A loud and crowded evening of bar food. Our group was hosted uncomfortably, with too little space to allow circulating. Nowhere to put the buffet of food for easy access around the pool tables. Didn't matter that smokers stepped just outside because their smoke got sucked right back in. Disaster.

Food is decent and had there not been a 2 hour wait for a table on a Wednesday at 6:45 due to parties, I'd probably have thrown down 4 stars. Worth checking out and probably the best pool hall option in Cambridge. DM me if you know of a better one.

Although I'm in Kendall Sq often I have yet to explore many of it's dining and entertainment options. With a goal of trying to do a better job of that I came to Flat Tops Johnny's. I haven't eaten here or utilized the bar for anything but water, still this place seems like a pretty cool spot. There are something like 16 pool/billiard tables that cost $12 an hour. There are also darts and Golden Tee, the dive bar staples. The place is casual and but the atmosphere/decor could use some updating. The place kind of rides the fence between potential urban upscale and potential suburban dive. In a suburb this would be fine and I am sure the regular clientele take no issue with it. Still I think if it wants to stay current some renovations would be wise. With an ever changing array of establishments opening their doors and the general redevelopment of Kendall Sq in general I would hate to see this place go anywhere were it to be drowned up by more attractive atmospheres. I will certainly be back as its nearby and provides a style of entertainment that is unique amongst the demographics of surrounding establishments. Next time I will make sure to try the food and update this review.

I recently planned a co-workers going away party here. I thought I would be able to write up a full review on their menu, meals etc, but sadly cannot. We were scrambling for last minute venue for a going away party for 15 people. It was a Tuesday and we needed reservations for Friday night. After my first two choices were booked, a friend recommended Flat Top Johnny's (shame on them!). When I called, the girl I spoke to couldn't even find the reservation book. She asked to call me back in a half an hour. She called me back about two hours later, just as I was about to call her. I made reservations for dinner for 15 as well as two pool tables after dinner. We arrive 15 minutes before our reservation. I check in and the girl looks horrified when I tell her about our reservation. She disappears in the jam packed restaurant/bar area. A few moments later, Ben, who I assume is the manager, comes out and apologizes that our reservation was taken incorrectly. We were only booked for the pool tables. He kindly offered us to eat dinner at the pool tables, but with 15 people, that screamed disaster to me. It was 7:00pm, we all just came from work about 40 minutes away and we were starving. Since they were so busy, they were unable to accommodate us for dinner. Luckily, Tommy Doyle's to the rescue. We were able to sit down together and eat! Ben was very nice about the whole mess and even offered to save us two tables to use after we ate dinner somewhere else. We came back and he gave us the two promised pool tables and said a waitress would be right over to take our orders. Well three rounds of pool at two tables later, she didn't come over to our tables once! Luckily we ordered our own drinks from the mediocre bar all night long. While the pool was fun, the service was terrible. Ben is the only reason this is even getting 2 stars. I will say, it's great for people watching and they play decent music!

I play pool 2-3 times per year, so this is not a review on the quality of pool tables, though there does seem to be a good number of regulars who all know each other. I would have given this place 3 stars, but on my last visit I ordered the nachos, and they know how to make them right. Good melted cheese throughout, not overdone, good serving of salsa spread over the top, plus all of the toppings. I'm a sucker for nachos. There is a good selection of beer, including local options. Ordering beer and appetizers from the table has been easy, and our orders came out quickly. If you go early enough, or during the week, you won't have any problems getting a table. In addition to pool, they have darts and pinball, if that is your thing.

Awesome pool-playing area. Kind of expensive ($12/hour), but on Sundays it's half off--and totally affordable. Also, some nice local beers on tap. French fries were meh. They could have better snacking options.

Love this place! The only downside is crappy choice of appetizers. I wish they would do something about that. Maybe cut some type of deal with Beauty's across the street or something along those lines? I seriously blow about 100$ bucks every night at this place but would consider spending a lot more if they got some better food. Come on guys! It's a pool-hall with tons of beer. All you're missing is some fries & pizzas!

Came in yesterday for the first time. I'm pretty new to Boston and have been looking for a good place to shoot pool. I've been to a few pool rooms in the area and Flat Top Johnny's is certainly one of the best I have found. I came in as they opened, Grabbed a table in the front corner and the place was fairly quite for the first hour and a half. They have a great bar, cool atmosphere, and pinball and darts if you looking for something other than pool. The food was good as well, and all said and done was happy with the pricing. 2.5 hrs of pool, couple drinks, an app, all under $40...can't complain. May be more if you have additional people playing at the same table though. Place started getting busy around 5:30, looked like a bunch of sorority chicks came in and were real loud, but it was a Sat and I expected the place to get busy. Only things I can knock - The tables have some wear. Some severe wear, I saw at least 2 tables next to mine that had tears in the felt. One dime size, the other was like 4 inches. They have to take care of that. The tables are in a narrow line to the back so I could only see the ones closest. Also, the limitation on size of the place has the tables close together. You have be mindful of the people playing at the tables next to you. If they aren't used to playing pool often, some people tend to stand in your way, and not notice that you are also playing at the table next to theirs, happens. Overall, I think it is one of the best places to shoot pool in the area. If you are serious about practicing, come early, get a good table. Don't be surprised when it gets busy/loud, its a great place for the area, and close to colleges, so its a place where people want to go to have a good time. Definitely Recommend, I will be back.

Awesome during the week when the pool tables are open and it's a chill atmosphere. However, I went here last Friday around 10/10:30 and it was pretty horrible. It was crowded and there was rap music playing so incredibly loud that you couldn't hear people sitting next to you. I lost part of my voice from being there for less than an hour, and it took a day for it to fully recover. A bunch of guys were super drunk, and one knocked me over with his chair while I had a beer in my hand cause he was so wasted. And of course he didn't apologize- he barely noticed. The wait for a pool table was 1 hour. We wanted to play darts, since they have 2 dartboards, but they told us that they didn't have any darts. Um okay. After we finished our beer, we peaced out ASAP to find somewhere else. Some advice for when it is packed and there is a huge wait for pool tables- get some darts, turn down the volume of the music so people can actually talk, and watch the drunk level of your clientele so they're not completely obnoxious. Otherwise, this place is worth a trip on off-hours for some beers and some pool.

I really like this place, finally something to actually do w' your friends as you consume copious amounts of beer! First off, I love that they have a ton of well kept pool tables. Yes, they definitely get busy and fill up but somehow we always seem to be able to get a table. I also love that they have a great draft beer selection! What makes your experience even better is that a waiter will come over to the pool tables and take your order. You can get your beers and your nice greasy nachos and veg out and you strategize on how to beat your friends in a game of pool....why do my skills "get better" after each beer I consume? Sooo if you are looking for a fun night out w' a chill group of friends come here, you won't be disappointed!

If you're looking for a spot to play pool, and you don't want to go all the way downtown to one of two large establishments... or you don't have a car to head out of town...Flat Top Johnny's is your go-to location. It has a very chill, laid back, almost hipster vibe to it. Everything is kind of run down.... the tables, the sticks, the furniture, the decor.... even the balls has dome nicks in them. All that said, I'm no pro so these defects really won't impair my game. The music is a rock mixture of 80s and 90s for the most part -- takes me back to my youth. There hasn't been a single time that I've come here and it hasn't been at least somewhat crowded. However, crowded as it may be, I've never had to wait, or wait long, for a table. Give it a go, but know that you're not going to experience top notch equipment. Go for the experience. Go with your friends. Go have some fun.

This place is the worst. They didnt keep our pool table reservation even though the manager had emailed us saying we were all set several times. The bar staff was very rude to us when we were trying to buy drinks - apparently the bartender can only serve 1 customer per 10 minutes. You think the place looks good and it does but the staff is unbearable. Go to some other pool hall instead of this one run by kids.

I honestly don't understand why people are giving this place less than four stars. All right, maybe they don't cater to vegetarians or glutards (didn't check the menu) but why are you ordering food at a pool hall if you're not a meat eater? There are like, five other restaurants/ bars within ten feet if you don't like the food at Flat Top's. Go there. Seriously, just go there. Yes, I'm gluten intolerant and I'll be the first to express my disappointment with a place that doesn't cater to my folk. That said, I don't expect every establishment to do so. People, it's a pool hall. Let's get serious for a minute. Pool halls serve sliders, chicken wings, nachos and MAYBE potato skins. If you don't like it, take a hike. My meat-eater/ gluten-tollerant friends seemed very satisfied with the food they got. Sliders and nachos were in high-demand (and consumed rapidly). The beer selection seemed solid and prices were reasonable. The billiards tables and balls are well kept and most of the pool cues were straight. I had no problem lining up awesome shots during the games I played last night. Did I impress myself with my billiards skills? Yes I did. **Be advised, this was due to the table conditions and a slight buzz, not any sort of real skill.** Oh no, I'm horrible at billiards under normal conditions. You know how Charlie Brown is at baseball? Football? Yeah, well that's me when it comes to billiards (and bowling come to think of it). The one semi-negative thing I'll say about Johnny's is that the bar-tenders seemed a bit more preoccupied with cleaning glassware than taking orders. Then again, they didn't have bar-backs, so I can understand the focus on cleaning when they're able. If you want a drink, just shout out - they wont ignore you if you speak up. **Gluten Free Note - They have Magners! Also vodka and other such gluten free alcohols.

My friend and I arrived at Flat Top Johnny's at 5pm on a Thursday. We left around 7:30. The place never got too busy. The twelve pool tables are pretty close together. Try getting the corner tables. The cashier would come by every so often to check to see if we wanted to order anything. I had a mixed drink and could taste the alcohol, a good thing! We were going to play some darts but supposedly there is a league starting around 7pm. Just a heads up. Two waitresses came by with alcohol samples. We declined. They probably thought we were two weird guys declining free booze. The place is ok. Good music. Ok atmosphere for a moderately slow evening. I would guess it would be pretty hard having a conversation when the place is packed. Didn't order any food but the prices looked pretty inexpensive.

Pinball review: I go here occasionally for the pinball because it is the only place in the city I know that has any. Have the feeling the owners/management either don't know about or care much for pinball and just have them to generate some extra $. Space: There are just two machines shoved in a cramped alcove on the left as you walk in. There is barely any room to stand, let alone "work the machine" as you play. No room for a table to place a drink on, so enjoy your beer before or after you play. If you're playing the machine closest to the wall and someone is playing the machine next to you, you are literally trapped until that person finishes their ball because there's no room to get by. You have to awkwardly ask them to move to get out. Machine condition: The AC/DC machine is brand new. These were only recently released by Stern, so of course this should be in pristine condition. The volume was too low to enjoy the music and sound FX and when the establishments jukebox/sound system kicks in forget about it. Lastly, it cost $0.75 a game...ouch. Not sure if that's a vending machine company choice or choice of Flat Top management, but that's excessive. Medieval Madness: is a 15 yr-old machine and it looks like it has never been cleaned. The playfield is a mess and the machine needs to be leveled. It leans to the left and has been that way every time I've come in to play. Can't play a machine out of alignment. Mechanically, it seemed okay though. Didn't notice anything broken. The volume setting was decent too. The credits are set to $0.50 which is fairly typical, but a waste in its current condition. If I knew who to speak with, I'd tell them to address the issues and re-evaluate their setup. Not a very fun pinball experience.

Eeeeeeeh, it seems to get a little worse every time I go. The music, that was once such a fun eclectic mix, has turned into a running joke that has included such wonderful moments as playing an entire Beastie Boys album straight through. And not even a "good" Beastie Boys album, mind you, but one of their recent abominations. The food, which I would previously have described as above average (okay, average to above average) bar food, is now merely palatable (at best). The staff is hit or miss; there are some great people there and some lazy and sloppy people. It always seems to cost a little more than it should. And what's worst of all, the once fantastic tap list is getting worse and worse. There's barely any really delicious beer left on the list; I have to resort to buying the same beer multiple times throughout the night. FTJ's, what happened to you? I will only come back because I have yet to find a better alternative, but there must be one out there.

I'm in love with this place. I was first introduced to this place strictly as a pool hall, and had a great time with friends shooting pool in such a cool environment. Then I started to love this place as a bar. The prices aren't cheap by any stretch, but I have a hard time calling them expensive, given that this is a middle to high end pool hall (beers are in the $5-$7 range) As for food, the last time I went I tried their nacho's and was blown away. By far the best naco's I've had in my entire life, and thankfully dirt cheap. I love and miss this place, needless to say, when I get make in my neighborhood, this will be one of the first stops.

Went here the night before the expiration of the Groupon deal. To no ones surprise, but the staff and management obviously, this place was very busy. Two different things I ordered, the sliders and the chicken skewers were "sold out". To make matters worse, we weren't told they were out of these things until at least 20 minutes after ordering them, then had to decide on an alternative and reorder. There were two people working the whole, pool hall / restaurant, the cook and the bartender. No manager, no waiter, no pool table staff. I wanted to play some pool, while I was visiting this pool hall for dinner, but all the tables were full and even with putting my name on the list right when I walked in, our name was never called for a table after the hour and a half to two hours we were there. The food that we ended up receiving was very mediocre at best, the only thing I could say that was a positive is that it's not high priced, but for what you get quality/quantity wise, they should charge even less than they do. We ordered potato salad to accompany our sandwiches, SINCE THEY DON"T SELL FRENCH FRIES, but when our meal came out, it had potato chips, not potato salad on the plate, so we had to ask, not once, but twice for them to exchange the potato chips for potato salad. When the potato salad did come out, it was a serving for one, not for two. Both of our orders were wrong, not just one! Also I was able, with a lot of effort to get the bartender to get me a refill on my diet coke, but of coarse when he brought me the refill, it was a regular coke. Ugh. Anyway, I can't speak about how well priced the beer was, since I didn't drink beer that night, nor can I speak for the quality of the pool tables, since I didn't get the opportunity to play, but I'm sure beer/pool would be the only reason I come back here, if ever. Bottom line: The service and food sucked. Not being properly staffed for the night before a Groupon expiration was idiotic on someones part. I blame the owner/manager...You Suck!

I lived five minutes walk away for two years and went there twice. Both times were OK, once the beer once free. Once per annum is about right though. It has pool tables! If you like pool, you will like it here! If you just like getting drunk, then may I suggest walking past Cambridge Brewing Company (not that good beer or food) on your way to Tommy Doyles (fairly good beer, nice and scuzzy atmosphere, food that has the staff recommending you go somewhere else).

Here's a well-guarded secret: pool is half off on Sunday nights. I discovered this by accident in June and I was just in there last weekend, the deal is still on! Even better, I have never had to wait for a table here. Too bad the kitchen was closed by 10:40pm on Sunday but with the Patriots creaming the Steelers, a nice group of pool players, and music to boot, I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Sunday night.

Went here recently with a few friends to shoot some pool, and was pleasantly surprised! Great beer selection and they have old school board games on top of pool. We only waited about 15 minutes for a table on a Wednesday night at like 8:30, but after that it started getting pretty crowded. Great place, will definitely be back soon!

Pool was one of those things I always thought that, with a little practice, I could be COMPLETELY AWESOME at. I only remember this fact, however, as I come off a five-year hiatus with a mighty ball-sinking, offset by the kind of scratch where the cueball actually leaps off the table and into the pocket. Inconsistency is the spice of life, my friends. Anyway, this is the only place I've ever played pool at in Boston, and it was way more fun than I anticipated. The music was a little schizophrenic, but the ambiance is a delight (famous paintings with pool references incorporated? Now I've seen everything!), the beer list is solid (including some welcome CBC numbers), and the food is both tasty and seriously cheap. The sliders are fresh, the buffalo tenders are kicky, and the nachos will last for days. Which is approximately how long our first game took. Balls. Everywhere. But give me a year. Championship circuit, here I come.

Quality of the tables is unbelievably poor, with one table having a 2 inch gash in the felt. In general, the table surfaces are in horrible condition.

The little dude with the red hair at the door who assigns you the table and gives you the balls is clearly very pissed off with this world and does not like what he is doing. Little dude, you need to find a new job. Your lack the most basic customer service skills. I don't expect you to give me hug when I come in but don't stand there looking like the 9 ball in stuck in your ass. For the owners of this place who are probably not there monitoring whats going on, please hire some pleasant people. I really don't want to go out, spend my money and see grumpy people. I don't expect five star treatment in a pool hall but guy's....come on. The waiter kind of sucked too. He would disappear for long periods of time. Not that it was busy, he would go and stand next to the little dude every ten minutes doing nothing. I don't get it. Waiter, you need to keep our glasses full of beer all the time. That's how you make money. Don't go and stand next to the little dude at the door. He is a bad influence. The One star is for the the decent appetizers we ordered. Sorry guy's not coming back anytime soon.

I'm a casual (read: terrible) pool player, but don't have enough shame to hide my (lack of) skill. So when the 7:45 movie at nearby Kendall Square Cinema was sold out and someone suggested, "Let's get tickets to the 9:50 and go shoot some pool," I had no objections. Flat Top Johnny's was reasonably crowded for a Friday night, but the wait for a table only ended up being 15 minutes. Be sure to bring your cell phone - there aren't any pagers, so if you want to wander more than 5 feet from the hostess table, you'll need to give her your cell phone. Three parties before us missed out on their tables because the hostess couldn't find them. We spent out 15 minute wait at the bar, which turned out to be a waste of time. Before we'd even finished sitting down, there was a bartender in our face asking, "You gonna order anything???" We asked for menus - he tossed one on the bar in front of us (there were six of us) and disappeared. He never came back to our end of the bar to take our order, in spite of our attempts to flag him down. We ended up taking our pool table without food or drink in hand. Fortunately the waitress working the pool tables was much more on top of things. We ordered and were quickly served a variety of foods and drinks: Grey Goose martini, beer, salad, buffalo wings, and chocolate cake. As far as the drinks were concerned, the martini was generous and the beer was cold. We probably should have stuck with bar food, thought - the wings were good, but the salad was brown and wilted and the chocolate cake was a Hostess cake stuck in a microwave and covered with Rediwhip. But what do you expect for a pool hall? All told, it was a good value and a good way to pass a few hours. Johnny's isn't a destination I'd ever set out for, but if I find myself waiting for another movie, I'll definitely swing in for a drink and a game.

I've been acting in the 48 Hour Film Festival since 2001, and since '05 they've been holding their screenings at the Kendall Cinema. Why is this at all relevant you might ask... well, it's because since they started screening at Kendall we've been getting pre and post show drinks here at Johnny's. It's a pretty cool place to suck back a few PBR tall boys. The staff has always been friendly and laid back. More then willing to flip around the TVs to find a game you're looking for and will even give you some witty bartender banter at times. Which is something I've found that has become a thing of the past with more and more "chain bars" opening up. They don't actually have a bathroom in the bar, as strange as that sounds. But they use the office building, that's attached to the bar. Their bathrooms are out a pair of doors to the left of the bar, down the hall and just past the escalator. Not too big of a deal. Just thought I'd make note of it. I haven't actually played pool here, but they always have deals on games during certain nights. Everyone's gotta get creative with "Happy Hours" since the blue laws still won't allow drink specials.

Went for a friend's birthday party. They had four tables reserved so we didn't have to wait for a table. For a "pool hall" I was astonished to see how dirty the tables were. We saw at the end of the night they lemon Pledged the side boards, but the tables themselves were never vacuumed or brushed. On every table there was a build up of dirt/dust/crumbs/lint/dustbunnies under the rails. The tables are so close together that you are always saying excuse me as you're jamming your stick up someone's rear end at the table next to you. Most people are courteous about it but others just annoyed with you for being in their way. Like we can help it. There seemed to be enough sticks to go around, but not enough triangles or chalk. The service is just OK. They are definitely not rushing to help you. A good handful of beers on tap and bottled beer - about $6 apiece. The food is mediocre. The sandwiches are fake deli meat. The brownies are dry. The bathrooms are outside, down a hallway in the adjoining office building. The stalls are so small that you have to be smaller than a size 2 to close the door without getting pushed into the toilet.

I like Flattop's. But, the only night I ever go is Sunday--its really quiet, there's plenty of tables, and getting the bartender's attention is easy. Plus, it helps that's the night the seasonal Dead Pool goes on, and we always have a good, relaxing yet really fun time. The patio is really nice to sit out at during the summer, and you can take your drink out with you which is extra nice. The food isn't bad at all, but its definitely pub food. All in all, I'm a fan :) I like the friendly staff and I have many pleasant memories of Sunday evenings spent here.

It's got its drawbacks, but overall FTJ's is a solid place to play pool, have a few drinks, and meet cool people. My co-workers and I used to come here every Thursday night around 10. Sometimes it was dead, and other times it was packed and we had to wait for a table because of a tournament or private party. At least half the times we went we had to wait. Sometimes 15 minutes, other times 1 hour. Parties are the worst. When a table finally clears, you're free to play, but beware of stumbling drunkards screwing up your aim. For a place that charges $12/hour for pool (other than free Wednesdays after 9 or $6/hour on Sundays), I expected the equipment to be better. The tables hadn't been brushed in ages, and most of the available cues were either too heavy or too crooked. It's hard to play a fair game of pool when you've got a shitty cue, uneven table, and an ass or wall blocking your shot. Go for the back tables if you can. AVOID TABLES #2 AND #4! Worst in the house. Also, WTF is up with the bridges? There are never enough to go around. The service is hit or miss. Some bartenders are cool, and others are douches. Once I actually had to bring back a drink because I wasn't about to pay $8 for fizzy water and 1 drop of vodka. "I'd like another, but this time could you actually put alcohol in it?" They don't do doubles, they don't do Long Islands, they don't do anything but beer and poorly mixed cocktails. Not the best spot to drink if you're looking to drink above all else. Decor is fantastic. Nice outdoor seating area as well. Food is excellent and cheap. (Especially the nachos and chicken quesadilla!) Good music too, depending on who's DJing the iPod. I'm a regular and I'll be going back. Just gotta accept it for what it's worth.

Site of last night's battle to see who in my office is most incompetent at biliards (i put in a good (bad) showing, of course), Flat Top Johnny's is a merely adequate place to play pool, in that it has tables, cues, and balls. Similar, in a regard to myself and my somewhat drunk coworkers, in that we are merely adequate players, capable of striking a ball with another ball driven by a stick. Sometimes. Space around the tables is tight, particularly near the wall with the ledge. They have beer from CBC on tap, which is good; having just come from there, though, i opted for a Harpoon, which was flat. If you're really keen on playing pool, better facilities will certainly be worth the trip; if you're in the neighborhood, well, it'll work.

This place gets 1 star for having cheap prices...but thats it. We sat at a table for probably a good 15 minutes and a waitress never came by our table. One of my friends got there before me and said that she did see a waitress at one point but it had been awhile. I went up to the bar & ordered a drink as well as an appetizer. The food was DISGUSTING! I ordered Nachos with chicken - you think that's basic, and cannot go wrong?? Well, Flat Top knows how to make them nasty! The chicken tasted like microwave chicken and the cheese tasted like it came from a jar. The chips were soggy. It was awful. Waited to play darts for awhile then decided it wasn't worth waiting and we moved our party to a place that knows how to run a business.

One of my new favorite places to relax. It has everything you could really ask for.. They have a very solid beer selection, plenty of tables, pinball machines, lots of seating, pleasant service, solid food, and are very well priced all around. The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual, nobody's in a hurry, everyone's just friendly and enjoying themselves. This place is a well rounded hang-out spot for anyone who just wants to have a good time, it's hard to argue with that.

I don't necessarily believe this place should be considered a "Pool Hall." Bar/Restaurant is more like it. On a random Thursday night, a friend and I decided to grab dinner and some beers at Flat Top's. We sat ourselves, grabbed our own menus, and the waitress took our order. The food is very affordable (averaging about $6 for a sandwich and side)... and the staff was friendly, but slow as snails. The drinks took forever to arrive, yet our meal came out like 5 minutes after we began our appetizer. Here's the worst part, and the reason this is just a two star review: While we were eating, a server was spraying all sorts of windex all over the tables surrounding us... so much in fact that it mixed with the flavor of my food.

This place is AWESOME. Food is good and well priced, pool is wicked fun and easy access to the T make this a pretty nice place to do some 16 ounce curls. Also - the bar staff is great. I asked for a beer for someone that hates beer and the blueberry wheat was superb!

This is a great place to hang out, grab some beers, and play pool/darts. The bar staff are excellent -- quick to grab your order, get it right the first time and are friendly I second RyanH's comment on the food -- it's very cheap to eat here. My favorite are the soft pretzels and mustard, buffalo chicken wrap and the hummus plate. We typically sit at the bar, so I can't comment on the service here I've never had to wait for a pool table and I've been here probably once a month for the past 5 years. It's a great open space that allows you to have a large crowd or a small gathering. The darts are off to the side and there is typically one board open (there's two in the place) so it's nice to get in a game while you're there. We've recently moved to Somerville, but I plan on still visiting this place pretty often

This place has a great atmosphere and good music, along with numerous pool tables and decent bar food which features a few original dishes that I had never had before including one which had cassava with some spicy sausage. It was actually really good. The bar is very well stocked and their bar tenders know how to make pretty good drinks which can be rare sometimes in Boston. The place is hip, can be busy at times and is a lot of fun, with a group of friends or with just a couple.

So much fun! I mean, what more good times can be had when you mix in pool, craft beer, spicy appetizers & darts? Well, throw in a bunch of cool friends, and you've got the makings of one helluva good time. I had never been here. Actually, I had never heard of this place! (I know, I know) Lucky for me, my pal Adam led the charge to stop over here after a Craft Beer Tweet-up at CBC. Wonderful! We played a couple games of pool in the hour we stayed (hey, I never said we were good). Good pool tables with non-warped sticks and plenty of chalk! That's a "win" in my book. I was SURPRISED at their craft beer selection. It's definitely an impressive menu for a "pool hall" that I never heard about. Now I look forward to making Flat Top Johnny's my destination for a night of drawn-out pool games, frothy pints and good ol' times with friends.

i dont understand how this place gets such bad reviews. Everything was great here in my experience with the exception of the service which was awful. The food prices are really cheap here. I think the most expensive item is the beef chili nachos and those are 9$. The beers are average boston beer prices. I thought the pool tables were in fairly good shape for how much they're used and the atmosphere and music were cool. The only reason i docked a star is the service was terrible. For some reason the waitress didn't write down the order when there were about 10 of us. What ended up happening was the food coming out over a 20 minute span (not an exaggeration). She said the chef was swamped but i have a feeling she just didn't ring in some of the items. The last meal to come out was the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. eek!

My friends and I stopped by here after we finished dinner at the Friendly Toast and wanted to check out this place. Neither of us had been here before and were very impressed when we entered the establishment. We only had a couple of drinks so this review will be short. Flat Top Johnny's has a very clean and nice industrial look going, with exposed piping and ventilation in the ceilings. There about 8 pool tables, 2 dart boards, 2 pin ball machines and a golden tee machine. I don't know how the food was since we didn't order any but it looked pretty good. While I was ordering a beer, they have Landskark on tap, I saw someone at the bar get a place of loaded nachos and it was huge! We put out name in for the pool tables and waited an hour and a half to get on but didn't luck out. That's what happens when you show up to a pool hall at 10! The vibe was really good. It was a mix of MIT students, Cambridge locals and bio-tech people from the adjacent office buildings. So there was a young and older crowd there. They were playing some pretty good music as well. My friends and I made it a point to come back here again and order some food and play pool earlier!

I used to go to Boston Billiards when I was living in Fenway, back when I was still able to run tables like a champ, and it was essentially everything I have always associated with the words 'pool hall': dark, cavernous, slammed bar, rock on the juke, populated by pool-table-tourists and a healthy helping of regulars who bring their own cues and mean business on league nights. Chalk on the walls for your hands, good, straight, well-tipped cues, clean felt, brushes provided. Flat Top Johnny's is totally not that place. This is a good thing and a bad thing. Went there last night for a first date, and enjoyed myself thoroughly -- in large part thanks to my company, I admit, but also because it's one of the most low-key pool venues I've ever been to. We got there at eight, walked the long walk back to our (recently re-felted) table in the back of the room, wondering if we were pariahs because we were so isolated...but by nine, every table in the place was taken. The beer was decent, and I'm happy to report that even after the place got busy, the girl serving us made sure we were never without fresh ones. We didn't try the food, but seriously...not sure what people want from a pool hall. Eat whatever's greasy and thank the gods of entertainment that you have something to line your stomach with so that you can drink more beer, that's my advice. They had the strangest playlist I have ever heard. Which is to say, it resembled my itunes (Imogen Heap? Phoenix? Passion Pit? M83?). Not that I'm averse to hearing stuff I listen to all the time, but I felt a little bit cheated. Where was George Thorogood? ZZ Top? KISS? Guns N Roses? It's hard to talk trash over a pool game to 'We Own The Sky', Flat Top Johnny's. I'm just saying. The cues seemed decent, though you might have to hunt for the weight you prefer. The felt was in good condition, but there wasn't any chalk to be had, which I suppose made the lack of a felt brush more acceptable. Also, be aware that you'll be arguing with the walls and other players whilst looking for space for some of your shots. I almost accidentally sodomized the boy in tight pants at the table behind ours whilst lining up a shot.

4 stars if I was basing the review on pool alone. The tables are a little close together and some of the people in there get really aggravated when you get to close to them while playing (you know the type, the "pros"). The food was not very good, decent beers, but totally meh sandwiches. I ordered the Flatop Johnny which consisted of a bulky roll with an Oscar Myer ham slice, an un-melted Kraft single and a slice of apple. Not very good.

A decent pool hall in Kendall Sq. Cheap PBRs and a mixed crowd. Not the best location though, even being close to Kendall. Tables were just ok. A bit slow and ours was obviously a little slanted. Never had the food, but seemed like a decent selection of beers and plenty of TVs to catch up on sports.

Pinball review: they have AC/DC which is in perfect condition and very playable, but they lose a ton of stars b/c they have Medieval Madness but it tilts when you hit the launch ball button. So essentially you can't even play it! So lame. I think it was the only time I've scored zero for an entire game! :(

So underwhelmed! The only reason to go here is to play pool (or to go to Dead Pool w/ Chris Ewen). There is a fair selection on draft as well. That's all the positives I can list. Now on to the fails. Service is slow and unpleasant. The menu is sparse with poor options for vegetarians. The food quality is abysmal. I had nachos which were pretty soggy and a tuna sandwich that was not at all as anticipated (was pinkish like cat food on toasted french bread). So unappetizing that I couldn't bear to eat it. The Groupon that enticed me to eat there didn't make the deal any better in the end.

Part of the Billiards/Pool (Boston) list. Yea, this place has great tables and great cues. If that was the only criteria, I would give them 5 stars. However, the tables are terribly located and too close together. They have about 10 pro-tables. During the day the effects of this drawback are mitigated because it's not so crowded. The highest rate is $12/hr. $6/hr. before 6pm. $6/hr all day/night on Sunday. Free pool every wednesday after 9pm. One thing thing that pisses me off is that they let the staff hook up their i-pods and play DJ during their shift. Flat Top Johnny, big mistake; most of your staff has awful taste in music. And, they did a good job decorating for setting up shop in some new, corporate-style building.

  • Ashley S.

I wouldn't come here to try to meet anyone new. And *definitely* not to eat. But if you want to play pool in Cambridge for a reasonable price, with not too long of a wait for a table (often no wait), Flat Top Johnny's does the trick. It's not too hard to get side-by-side tables for a larger group either - after-work gatherings, birthdays, etc. Best of all, most of the tables are just groups having fun (vs being all competitive), so people aren't breathing down your neck to finish your game faster than my skills would make possible.

There's only two reasons I ever venture out to Kendall... The Friendly Toast and Flat Top Johnny's. That being said, I've never had their beers or their food, but I have certainly played a round or two on their billiards tables. The tables themselves are nice and the house cues are some of the better I've seen, but what really, really, really bugs me about Johnny's is that the tables are so damn close together. Now sure, I've been to many a pool hall, I know that you can't always get the space you need to make every shot, but on a busy night, it's near impossible to play a game of pool at Flat Top. If your cue isn't hitting the wall or a stool or a post, it's probably impeeding someone else's game, a waitress who wants to sneak by, or (in extreme cases), the entire bar staff (who's genius idea was it to put a pool table right next to the bar entrance?!) On calmer nights you can usually get the run of the place, but stay away from the Saturday night rush.

I probably would never come here, except that it happens to be a useful place for big parties (my office had our holiday party here). The food is underwhelming (except for those heart-attack inducing but delicious potato skins). The tap list didn't blow me over, either. I don't play pool, which is probably the primary reason to go to this bar. So, big surprise, I wasn't all too terribly impressed. When I was here with the office party, we got good service, but on previous occasions service has been spotty. Not too bad if you're in the neighborhood, but not a place I'd return to as a regular.

I struggled between 3 and 4 stars, but at the end of the day I'm a fan of this place so I gave it 4 stars. I recently tried the food and it was pretty standard bar fair - good selection of sliders. Beer menu is pretty solid as well - but they definitely have some strong beers on there that can sneak up on you. I wasn't able to confirm last time I went, but this place used to sell 40's which was AWESOME with a paper bag available upon request. Its a great place to come and hang out with a group of peopl eand play some pool - they charge by the hour which isn't too bad, but if you get distracted and are suddenly there for a while it gets a big pricey. They aren't always staffed appropriately, but when they are its nice to have a waitress come by the pool table so you don't have to keep fighting the crowd at the bar.

I have been here about 4 times. The pool here is pretty good, tables are nice and cues are solid. The only complaint is that some of the tables are too close to the wall. There are some wooden circular beams protruding from the wall that if you are shooting from a corner of some of the tables will really get in your way. I have not been here at peak times so I cant speak to how busy it gets, but I don't think that is the pool hall's fault if I have to wait for a table on a Friday night.

I've never been a big pool guy, but pinball and Golden Tee are right up my alley! The pinball machines (currently Attack from Mars & The Simpsons Pinball Party) are usually in top notch form. The tilt sensors are generous and the magnets won't screw you. All of the table features are usually working and when they aren't, are fixed quickly. After recently getting back into Golden Tee, this has become my go-to spot due to both the condition of the machine, as well as the craft beer selections. Dogfish Head 60 minute is now a standard and they rotate some interesting seasonals in, as well. Those playing pool seem to be having fun and the public-use cues are mostly straight. Some of the tables have some rather large repairs, but I really don't care about the pool when I am there so it isn't a big deal to me. Get there after 8 or so on a weekend evening and good luck getting a table, though. The food is passable, but I wouldn't come here for dinner. With all the other good restaurants within a stone's throw, I tend to eat before or after a few rounds of Golden Tee. Staff are friendly and music is bartender's choice. Pray you don't show up when the guy who plays his own techno is slinging drinks, though, unless you are a fan of mediocre electronica. It also bears noting that they are very hospitable to large groups. My wife & I had the after party for our wedding here a few months back and it could not have been a better experience! They had saved our previously reserved tables even though we were almost 30 minutes late and were over-all very accommodating.

Came here with my company last night for pool, drinks, and food. Hooray for getting your beer paid for! The place is tucked away in the back of this Kendall Square area, kind of as if the rest of the restaurants here are ashamed of it. No particular reason for them to be, though. Flat Top Johnny's is perfectly acceptable, perhaps a little cruder than the rest would like it, like that one cousin that really isn't such a bad guy, really, but why does he insist on sticking around and embarrassing us? 10 pool tables and not too much room around them, but decent enough. Average beer selection. Okay appetizers, though their beef-on-a-stick looked like jerky. Their potato skins were good, though, and made up for it. On the whole, an average pool hall/bar.

I am a math geek. I dug physics in school. and yet I SUCK at pool. I actively avoid playing it as much as possible, but somehow I love pool halls. and this place is sorta a pool hall - it also is a sports pub circa late 90s (before the law that every square inch of wall much be covered by plasma/LCD kicked in). the food is decent, the crowd is cool, the bartenders good. it's dark and casual - until you have to pee and are forced into the flourescent lighting of the office building this place is actually carved out of

I have been going to Flat Top Johnnys several times a week for the past few months. I usually go right before they close and just play pinball for a while. Here's what I like about FTJs: 1. Wheel Of Fortune Pinball Machine 2. Great Beers (both on tap and in bottles. They have a really good selection of tasty microbrews) 3. The pinball machine. 4. Cool, nice bartenders. 5. Not too crowded. 6. Pinball (did I already mention that?) Maybe most people would rather go to a place where there is more than two other people there... but I quite like the sparse crowd. I think this is a great spot.

Having been to Flat Top Johnny's numerous times, I've found it's always hit or miss. Unfortunately, it's been a miss more and more frequently as time passes. While the food is mediocre, the beer selection underwhelming, the price average, I can't review Flat Top's on such, because this is a pool hall, and that's what I come here for. That said, Flat Top's has everything it needs to be a great place to shoot: beer, location, décor, more beer, and pool tables (duh), but it somehow fails to reach its potential. Recently, the music seemed to go from great hip-hop, to offensive-to-my ear's crap, then cut chemist O_o. Step you're game up Flat Top's! How hard is it to throw on Pandoror? I'm guessing ya'll using an iphone as your 1's and 2's with the SMS's I hear ya'll getting. This, perhaps, is the surface to the real problem: the staff. I can't say they're terrible, but they sure as hell aren't great. And maybe their general attitudes reflect their music selection. *Note to staff: it's who-garden, not hoe-garden; get it straight, and don't correct me when I say it right. Also, stop trying to flip me pool lessons on the side; I don't play to win, I play cuz I like to slap balls in me pockets. They call me magic 8.

Finally finding some pinball. FTJs currently has two pinball machines- Simpson's Pinball Party and Twilight Zone. Twilight Zone and I don't get along, but I found it to be in good working condition. Simpson's Pinball Party was in slightly rough shape, but it was fun to play. There isn't a change machine, but the bartender had plenty of quarters on hand. There was also a Golden Tee machine for those interested.

My friend and I went to FTJ's last night and had the worst experience ever. It took 5 minutes for any of the staff to greet us, and they said that because they were so busy and understaffed, it would take over an hour for them to "come to me." Since there were a few tables outside, I said we didn't mind waiting since we had trekked all the way out there to use a Groupon. We only waited for 30 minutes before the server came out and took our order, and the food came out shortly after. The server was really rude though and never came back to refill our drinks or check on us. He didn't even get us eating utensils, so my friend had to take them from another table. The burgers and nachos were great though -- the only perk of the outing! When the same server got us a pool table, he didn't tell me which table to go to. I didn't know the tables were assigned, so I took the one closest to me. Mid-way into a game, he comes up and says we were at the wrong table and needed to move. If he had told me which table to go to in the first place, we wouldn't have had that problem...the table we're moved to is having a party at the table next to us, so they're standing around our side of the table as we're trying to shoot pool. I would ask them to move whenever I had to take a shot from that end of the table, but it was really inconvenient because it was so often. Another group of pool players (vs. partiers) approached us and said we should ask the server for another table since the other group was blocking an entire side of our table. I go to the server and ask him if we can move to another open table, and he says, "No, just tell them to move." "(politely) I have been, but they're all just congregating there." "Well, tell them again! Keep asking them!" That was the first time I've ever been yelled at by a server, and I'm disappointed in myself for not walking out of there at that moment. The table we're at is next to the bar, and the same server dropped a bottle (at this point, I swear it's on purpose) close to my foot and it shatters. A shard CUTS me, and he clearly sees me wiping blood from my leg, but he doesn't even apologize or acknowledge that I'm cut. It wasn't a huge, cut gushing blood, but a bleeding cut nonetheless. I'm even more disappointed in myself for not saying anything to them about it then... I know I sound like a hysterical crazy woman, but I'm not picky and am easy to please, but that particular server made me feel so small and stupid with the way he was talking and acting towards me. I don't mind sub-par service as long as the food/tables are good, but he was intentionally and consistently rude, and I would never recommend for anybody to go to FTJ's.

this used to be one of my favouritest places to hang out, but after encountering some very rude service, i refuse to go back here. my boyfriend went up to the bar and ordered three Irish Car Bombs, which the bartender willingly sold to him. the friend brought back the drinks to our pool table area, and as we were about to drop the shot in, a male waitstaff rushed over and told us to not drop the shot glasses in, as doing so is not permitted, and asked us to pour our shot in. no further explanations were given as to why this was not permitted, but we complied. about ten minutes later, our female waitress approached me and said "I heard that you guys got in trouble." when i shrugged and didn't respond, she added, "the next time you guys do that, we're going to kick you out," and walked off from our table. wtf?! why did the bartender even sell the drinks if they weren't allowed? surely he's not so daft that he doesn't know what we would do with shots of baileys and pints of guinness. i wrote the establishment's owner and got an apology and was asked to come back for some free pool time, but 1) how can i just walk up to the counter and demand free pool time for previously shiteous service, and 2) i just didn't want to go back after being threatened to be kicked out, when we were not being rowdy nor intoxicated.

Had a couple of drinks here before going to Kendall Theater. Bar was busy for a Tuesday night.. There were lots of pool tables, and it looked like a cool place. It did look quite tight around the pool tables making it seem like if the tables were busy, pool would be a challenge. Beers were good, bartender was cool. I would go back.

I love going to a place and hearing Led Zeppelin, Modest Mouse and The Mars Volta on the stereo. Some friends and I played speed pool and, needless to say, the music generated the perfect crazed and schizophrenic ambiance for a great game and a lot of fun. I haven't tried the food and so I can't comment on that. But, I just happen to love the music they play, the tables are great, sufficient drink service, and I love shooting pool in a place made for shooting pool. Great spot, one of my favorites in Cambridge by far.

Toni L. is right, it does seem like less of a pool hall and more of a bar that happens to have pool tables -- but that's sort of to be expected when you have that many corporate captives being unleashed back into the wild at the exact same time every friday. It's bound to become a bar with pool tables instead of a pool hall with a bar. The food is OK and the waitresses and bartenders are really nice -- which is suprising based on the amount of crap they take from customers. I'm always embarrassed on behalf of the human race everytime I go in there and witness the way people treat employees. I find myself constantly apologizing for other people's behavior. But then, that's just cambridge I guess.

Awkward lesbian couples. People who have clearly never been to a real pool hall. EF employees who still desperately want to think they're hip and/or with "it" (or any once-hipster, now 9-5 corporate cheezeball who still has faith in their coolness, which is waning as fast as their hairline). And one dude who sat diagonal from me and wouldn't stop scratching his "junk". This seems to make up much of the clientele at Flat Top Johnny's. Not that this is a bad thing. In fact, these are very likely the type of people who want a pool hall that feels safe, friendly, and inclusive. And I include myself in that very broad category. I didn't play any pool when I came in, but the facilities appeared well maintained. I came in for dinner, the place was full but not crowded, and we quickly got a seat. I ordered a quesadilla and a Caesar salad, both of which were very tasty. I came in again the next night and ordered a burger, which was pretty lackluster. Bun was cold, cheese wasn't really melted. Offering chips seems like a lame cover for not having a deep fryer. However, I give this place 4 stars because the food and environment the first night was very good, I could see myself playing pool there at some point, and when I came in the second night, I was able to do exactly what I wanted--grab a table, order dinner and a few beers, and be left alone while I read Venus in Furs, a kinda boring, fairly weird novel about masochism in the late 19th century. I like a place where I can hang out and get my shiz done without interruption. *Quesadilla Review* I eat a lot of quesadillas, so I think they need their own review. This quesadilla was an 7.5. Maybe an 8. It was made of very shredded chicken. I liked this though, because it allowed the meat to be evenly spread throughout the quesadilla (instead of in diced chicken chunks). It was even a bit spicy, which I appreciated because many are very bland. However, spicy is not necessarily flavorful. The platter came with sour cream, guacamole, and salsa, which are staples I hate to pay extra for. Would eat again.

Good Tables, Solid Bar, Not Too Crowded Flat Top Johnny's is a great place to go shoot some pool right here near MIT. The tables are well maintained and well spaced, and even on weekend nights it's not impossible to get a table within a half hour or so. It's definitely a pretty friendly place in terms of pool, with a wide variation in skill level whenever I've been there. The beer selection is pretty decent, featuring a lot of beers from Cambridge Brewing Company if you're into that. Overall, a fun and relaxed place to shoot some pool right in Kendall Square.

This use to be my chill spot when I lived in Cambridge. There's usually a good crowd and the drinks are decent. Don't ask for a Long Island; they can't serve drinks with more than 2 or 3 liquors in it. Free pool Wednesday nights. One time I showed up and it was Goth night. The rock was blasting and a lot of people dressed in black and leather; that was interesting. I wouldn't get lunch or dinner here; stick with the Nachos and drinks.

Stick to playing pool and beers for this place. If you're just looking for some place to hang out with friends after work, this is fantastic. But as soon as you start craving a bite to eat, its all down hill from there. We grabbed a table to kill some time before a pool table opened up, and we started eyeing what we presumed to be yummy bar food. How can anyone mess up nachos, quesadillas or chicken fingers? Well apparently its possible. Needless to say I left there as hungry as I came, but I had a great time with my friends and my pool game drastically improved. Which isn't saying much because I was having trouble making contact with the ball to begin with. added bonus: the kitchen staff was making cookies for themselves at the end of the night. we had the table closest to the kitchen so we were sniffing around so much that they brought us a plate of the rich buttery goodness- on the house :-)

Well - lets' just say that the people who work here need lessons in geography and tact. When I called to find out where they were, the girl informed me that they were across the street from the Marriott. um, no you aren't! So I had to call again. She said they were diagonally to the left of the Marriott. Nope - wrong again. Called a third time & she repeated the diagonally left comment, saying that they were next to a brewing company. Didn't give a name or anything. I finally had to stop someone on the street & ask where the hell this place was. We miraculously got there & decided to have dinner. My friends ordered burgers and wanted them medium rare. The waitress informed us that it was not possible because the burgers are cooked, then frozen, and the reheated. YUM. Asked for blue cheese, got American, you get the idea. Was too unimpressed to play pool & there were so many dinks flirting with the dumb girl who gave us the wrong table that we weren't even informed that a table opened up. She finally came over & asked if we still wanted to play when she gave us our check...yeah no. I'll go on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when the place is calmer. The music was great & the place looked awesome but it was a no go for me & my friends :(

*i only came here for drinks/apps - no pool. but,.... that being said, we were served the GROSSEST food i've had in forever. how do you screw up chicken quesadillas? they were smoky and sweet and had the consistancy of cat food (or what i imagine cat food would taste like). nasty. they even screwed up hummus and veggies. the veggies were old and rubbery. they were also served with some hot, red, soupy, lumpy, feta-cheese thing - horrific. it had puddles of red grease floating on the top. this place made me feel yucky.

Flat Top Johnnys gets an extra star for the fact that they currently have two of my all-time favorite pinball machines available and in good working order: Attack from Mars, a Midway machine that is pretty forgiving for the novice like me, and The Simpsons Pinball Party, which is one of the most difficult machines I've ever played. Drop a few quarters and enjoy!

I don't understand how this place was ever in the running for "Best Pool Hall in Boston." It either doesn't speak well for Boston or the editors Boston Magazine. I suspect the later. There are many full-sized tables and the felt and cues are in decent condition. I've noticed warping on several visits though. Not too bad, but noticeable at times. I wouldn't nitpick something like that except for a place being sold as "the Best." Johnny's is often crowded with their many themed nights and after work parties, which is good in my book, but it can take a bit to get a table. Unfortunately, the food and the bartenders don't do much to mitigate. The chicken tenders (my go-to bar food) were inedibley gross. Nachos were a little better. The salsa is from a can, and so is the guacamole, if that's your thing. It got me through the night, but I was not enticed to explore further. The beer and booze selection is typical. Nothing special. Mixed drinks are fine, but don't dare ask for a double twice. They'll kick you out. Happened to a friend of mine who'd been going for a while. I guess there's rules to dis sh*t. By far the worst aspect of this place is the staff. They seem more interested in surliness than service. Waitresses come around ever so often. I've definitely gone 45 mins without seeing mine. The bar is much worse. They will straight up ignore you, given any pretense. I've been to much bigger and much better places than this. Flat Top Johnny's, why the attitude? You're a small fish in a big pond. I recommend King's for bowling and pool in the Back Bay. Still MIT adjacent, and a much much cooler atmosphere. I'll still shoot pool here, but it's not the best.

We just happened to stumble upon this after a dinner at the CBC, and we had a great time! Literally no wait for a pool table, we had a waitress check in on us for drinks every so often. Sam Summer was 4.50 and Miller Chill was 3.50.. Not sure about the other drinks. They also have a dart board and two or three arcade games. Music was decent, they had several tvs so we could watch the sox game.. and it was only 12 dollars for an hour of pool. Overall, pretty fun and go back the next time I want to sharpen up my pool skills.

I went to Flat Top Johnny's last night for the first time. I was definitely impressed, they played Talib Kweli!! Any place that has Talib pumping through the speakers is top notch in my book. All in all, good music, a funky crowd, reasonably priced pool and drinks. I will become a return customer no doubt.

Eh. The food is acceptable as bar food but not remotely exciting. The service is spotty; I've had many a server forget the beers that I'd ordered. The music varies and depends on whoever's iPod is playing. But the pool tables are good, and the beer works, and that's why I go there. It's cheaper and more convenient for me than Boston Billiards or Big City.

I came to Boston expecting a lot from this place. It get's rated as the best place to shoot pool by the local weeklies pretty consistently. I'm beginning to think that may have more to do with the other options, than anything particularly great about this place. The people were nice and it didn't take long for the waiter to notice I needed another drink. So as a bar, I'd say the place is pretty good. As a pool hall though--not so much. The tables looked like they hadn't seen a brush for many months. The felt looked like a work of modern art with all the drink stains. The quarters were tight as well, which is great if you're looking to meet your neighbors. Not so great if you're bumping or getting bumped regularly.

I've only gone once so far and I will definitely go back and probably update this review... I totally agree that having darts (and not with tables in front of the boards... cough cough, Spirit) is a huge plus and needs to be copied by more bars. So I went on a Wednesday in February at 11pm for the free pool. It was free pool, so I can't really complain. Very nice tables, too. And there aren't many pool hall options on this side of the river. But I do have a couple nit picky points... first, they were playing a Rage Against the Machine album and it started to grate after a while. I like them, but not easy to listen to song after song. Also, I thought the tables were a little close together. Seemed closer than Boston Billiards or Big City in Brighton, for example. I was bumping into or waiting for my table neighbors a lot. But anyway, these are minor issues. It's a cool space and I definitely plan to go back on a more crowded night. I also plan to continue taking advantage of their Wednesday night free pool special. EDIT: I've been back a few more times for Wednesday free pool and my friend and I are starting to make it a weekly thing. The service is very good and one of the servers remembered my friend's drink choice after he had only been once before, two weeks earlier. Very impressive! On a Saturday night recently, it was surprisingly not packed. All the tables were taken, but the bar area was still pretty sparse, though it was continuing to get more crowded when we left at 11pm. There was a pretty young crowd there, as well. I think it was due to no bouncer at the door and the fact that they serve pitchers, if you know what I'm getting at.

I hoped to like this place. A lot. I have gone there several times, hoping my experience will be good and I'll like this place because it has everything working for it. But it's barely mediocre. There's nothing special about this place regardless of the good location, good beer selection (although I don't agree w/ the price) and pool tables (that's why the 3 stars). It's not the first place I look to go to in Cambridge esp. there's CBC and Tommy Doyle's just right around the corner. it's good for big groups to hang out. I have eaten here once, and that was enough. It's not recommended.

  • Toni L.

I generally liked this place, but it didn't seem much like a pool hall to me. Maybe it's more of a bar that just happens to have pool tables, darts, video games, and pinball. Actually, the bar wasn't even that great either (the bartenders take their sweet time with no qualms about it at all). So why did I like it so much? First off, I'm not a professional pool player by any means so the atmosphere wasn't intimidating. Also, and I'm not a super heavy drinker and don't care if I'm just sipping one or two beers over an entire night. Finally, the music is great here, but it is definitely not "pool hall" music. Think Massive Attack and you'll get what I mean. Anyway, Flat Top Johnny's is a pool hall for those who probably don't play pool all that much.

  • Jeremy L.

Johnny's has good full-size tables re-felted in the not-to-distant past. I seem to recall at least one beer from CBC on tap which made the night more enjoyable. If you're there to play pool, avoid the busy weekend nights and the near-bar area. It was hard to keep people from interrupting the game and I barely managed to survive a collision with the wait staff who were way overworked. The pulled pork sandwich was tasty but not exciting (or maybe the beer had overcome me at this point). Definitely the best place to go in the area to get a decent table that I've found.

There are very few places in Cambridge that would consider it "cool" to play Puddle of Mudd. FTJ's is one such place. This is a great place for bottom of the barrel singles, recently marrieds who realized they made a mistake and just about anyone who doesn't know there are SO many better places to go in Cambridge. If you're not playing pool on the spacious tables (the one good thing here) with some ear plugs in to block out the bad music, why are you here? ------- And the response from the owner ------- You know Colin, you seem like a pretty active guy, and I see that you are an entrepreneur as well. As a person who may or may not own a business, realize that the folks you review are real people. Flat Top's has been in business for 15 years. We may not be part of the "cool" that you seem to know so very much about. But, know that we are as much if not more a part of Cambridge than you would give us credit for. What made you think that the song you took so much offense to was played to be cool? Might it have been played simply because the person choosing the music liked it? By all means, review us, we love reviews. But, in your rush to be funny or erudite, please don't trash a place that is locally owned and operated, and has seen more years, and people through it's doors than most places here in Cambridge. The B-side that you love so much...? Rob helped me open Flat Top Johnny's and Pat (the owner) worked for me. I hope some day when your business is judged, that your entire body of work is treated fairly by those who voice their opinion. In any event, thank you for trying us out. And feel free to write me back if you have some constructive criticism with Flat Top's. I would be more than willing to listen. I am a good listener, 15 years in business, and counting, requires that I be. John Adams flattopjohnnys.com

Food is not good, that keeps it from 4 stars. In a party of 10-12 people, no one liked their food (my chili was the best of the bunch) - lots of draft beer choices, very quiet on a Sunday which is good imo. Pool is relatively cheap and we were able to get a table easily. Atmosphere was good. Waitstaff quasi attentive. Its ok, not great, but ok.

I've been coming here for a while. I think in order to really like and respect this place is that you have to be a pool player. Not a pro, but someone who loves the game, and respects a place that has well maintained tables that are well lit, nicely spaced apart, and the pool sticks aren't missing the tips or broken in half or anything. The price for pool is more than reasonable and I rarely, if ever, wait for a table. I also like the fact that every time I've come in here, the music is diverse and great. Old school hip hop gets into a modern tune, to something from the 90's, to a classic rock song, to something offbeat and obscure. They have a good number of beers on tap, and reasonably priced, though my friends and I usually go ultra cheap and order up a couple Naragansett's or PBR tall boys, just because they sell them so cheap. They also keep them on ice so it's incredibly cold. The big downside, and why I can't go 5 out of 5 is that I find the service to be consistently slow. On more than 1 occasion, a world of time has gone by since our server was by the table, so we'd go to the bar to get our drinks, only to get dirty looks from the waitress later. Well, sorry honey.... you snooze ya lose. The second reason for stealing the 5th star is the food. It is inexcusably bad. Like it's not even bar food bad, it's just bad. I've gotten sick from it. Seriously. If you're hungry, ask them for a bag of chips and you might be OK. If you're hungry, go to Tommy O'Doyle's for some pub fare around the corner. After that, come to Flat Top's for good music, good beer, and very reasonable drink and pool price on good quality tables.

glycerine? really? ahh, gavin rossdale, sometimes a pretty face just isn't enough. but i digress. seems like i've been going to flat top johnny's forever on large party outings. lately it's been work sponsored events where we have food and booze. what does that mean? i'll take free food and booze and like it. the food is average (buffalo chicken strips, tato skins, skewers of something, etc), but i do like the cheese and fruit platter. i'm no dragon lady at pool so i'll play one half-ass game and go home a little bit fuller and little bit liquored up. besides pool, there's a dartboard in the corner and tables up front. all-in-all an okay place. (is okay 2 or 3 stars? 3 - because i never have a crappy time here)

Decent spot.. Went on a Sunday night, place was empty which was nice.. Staff was nice enough-my only complaint was the music the bartender had blaring-holy shit I felt like I was in the suburbs in some lonely/angry white teenagers basement.. The music made limp bizkit sound good-it was that kinda stuff-horrible rock with corny raps on it.. Get a jukebox or somebody with some taste in music. I'd debate on going back just cuz of the music.

Not the best place to play, but it is the closest to where I live unfortunately. More casual shooters here than competitive players. There's twelve 9-ft tables. The balls and cues aren't great though. I think they run a league on Mon nights and there used to be free pool after 11pm on Wed. Since they're only open until 1am, that gives you two hours, unless they want to kick you out early like they did to me since there weren't too many other people there.

This place has become inconsistent. Pool equipment is not as well maintained as it once was. The music selection is often at the whim of the wait staff and recently i don't agree with their taste (aggressive and dated rap). They don't do movies anymore and god forbid you end up there on "goth night". So i'm downgrading my previous rating, but i still recommend it. They are still the best place for pool in Cambridge and, who knows, maybe if more pool players start going they'll turn the place around.

Pinball Machines! That's all I can say. This is the only reason that my friends and I truck here on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong-I have no problems whatsoever with this place. The bartenders have been nothing but friendly. I mean it's not exactly my scene but hey as long as I get to play pinball with my friends, I'm doing all right. They even now have Ms. Pacman. Does it get any better during a night of drinking with your friends? And they also have quite a lot of pool tables for those interested in that game.

solid place. tables could be better, but at least plenty of full size ones. if you like to play, not a bad place to kill a few hours, and have a good time. prices are average.

I've gone to Flat Top's about once a month for the last few years, and I haven't found a pool hall in the area that is better. The tables are well maintained, the waitresses are good at keeping the jack and coke's coming, and the music is usually decent. My only complaint is the menu - it's what you would expect - typical bar food - but I just wish they would add some new items every once and a while. Ultimately, this will always be my first choice for pool in the Boston area.

If you're interested in pool, don't play here. Half the tables are too close to the wooden support posts, which constricts your play. I didn't see a single bridge in the place. And the waitress bumped into me twice when I was down for a shot. They obviously aren't concerned about the pool aspect. As for the food, I wasn't impressed. It was acceptable for the price, but pretty pedestrian. I will definitely not be returning to this place.

Hmmm....well let me just say I'm cheap...and after arriving in Boston from Nebraska I went into anaphylaxis at the prices in this town...and as one who used to play pool regularly, and I mean almost every night, I was finding it hard to find places that were affordable and where you could get a table without waiting for hours on end. I guess I settled on Flat Top Johnny's...the prices are steep (I was used to laying down 50 cents at my local watering-hole)...but when split 2 or 3 ways it's not too bad. The tables are nice...the atmosphere is pretty laid-back. Get there early to get a table though. I can't recall how good the drinks are...I guess they're pretty good...food is regular bar food. Oh and like one poster already mentioned, they do play good tunes here which is always a plus!

Used to visit this place on the regular, maybe two-three years ago - service was always great. I've been there three times over the last two months, and had three different waitresses at our table, and each time I've been disappointed with the service. On one occasion we were never asked if we wanted anything, we just ordered at the bar. I've always been a 20%+ tipper, never had any problems with the place, it just seems the staff doesn't realize that their take-home is directly proportional to the number of drinks they serve.

Great place to drink or have an outing. Food is so so and staff is a bit cold if they dont know you. Fun for groups!

With all of your options for entertainment, you pretty much cant go wrong here! The bar features 12 full size pool tables--hard to come by in Boston--the land of teeny, tiny, itty, bitty bars. There are two darts boards, three arcade machines, and a bunch of TVs for watching sports, they have a little more than the usual beer selection, and the food is what you would expect to find in a sports bar. Prices on food and drink are fair, but in my opinion the pool is a bit steep--but watch out of special nights where they have free pool after 10 or discounted rates. The games are by the hour, so if you really suck plan to fork it over when the night is done. The crowed here can be an interesting bunch, you will always get your fill of eccentric MIT folks, and pool shark want to bes from all over the area. The manager, Davey, is cute and very accomodating for any issues that may come.

If you don't mind waiting a LONG time to get a pool table then Flat Top Johnny's is the place to go. While you wait you can sip on some $2 bottles of beer (they stock beer from the Cambridge Brewing Company - next door). The music is good. They have DARTS too! (There aren't enough bars in this city that have darts....) Atmosphere is very casual and cozy. Bonus: Free pool after 11pm on Wednesdays. And, my favorite: 1/2 price pool for the ladies on Tuesday nights!

The food is pretty hit or miss, with an emphasis on miss, but this is THE place to play pool in the Boston area. The rates are good and the tables and cues are in excellent shape. Also, they have two dollar bottles of beer here! And two dart boards! And Golden Tee! What else could you and your drunk friend ask for? Oh -- how about outside seating? Yeah, they have that too. So, don't go here looking for a good meal. But if you're looking to do the bar sports triathlon -- there's no beating Flat Top's.

One of my favorite places in Cambridge, definitely the best place to play pool in the whole Boston-metro area, unless you enjoy a scene like Gillian's. Red felt tables, cool music playing (think Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, etc. - no crappy dance tunes here! You want to dance, go to a club) great beer selection with CBC stuff on tap as well. Always an interesting crowd there as well, after-workers, before-partiers, students, geeks, chicks, dudes... just go.

had a few beers here with some coworkers and played a few games of pool. chill spot for happy hour, and they serve a loaded nacho dish. they served cbc beer even though it was next door, so that was cool. might have to come back to make a better judgement ...

I'm sounding like a broken record here, but, yeah-- go when it's empty. Got a weekday off for some reason? Want to play some pool in a pretty cool, newer pool hal? This is your place. Drinks are reasonable, they have good beer (courtesy of Cambridge Brewing Company right next door-- stop by some time and take home a jug of one of their famous beers). Also, a decent jukebox, which is always a plus.

I used to go to Flat Tops once a week to play pool about 5 years ago, I liked going there because it was out of the way and never seemed to get really all that busy, which for someone that is trying to work on there pool game is a pretty good combination, after going for a while we got to know the staff (back then anyway) which was also a very good thing. I have a lot of good memories playing pool here and the food was always just something to snack on while playing pool, like the Spinach Artichoke dip. Anyway, if you just want a quiet place to play pool this is it, You're not going to get the lines of people waiting or the scene that you would at Boston Billiards, Jillians or any other pool hall in Boston.
