This used to be my favorite pizza place but after a stone-cold pizza the manager told us to come back for a free pizza. After a 25 minute wait we were served a BLACK burnt pizza...not sure what's happening here but it's not for the better

I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised. Crisp and airy crust, stringy cheesy goodness, and the right amount of sauce. Nice big slices too. The best pizza I've had from a chain.

I've had two experiences at this place and both were not what I expected. The pizza looked appetizing, but tasted horrendous. I don't even think what I ate is allowed to be called pizza. The bottom was very doughy like it was uncooked. On top of that the ratio of crust to sauce/toppings was like 6:1..and I felt like I was just eating a loaf of bread. People, the pizza is misleading. It may look all CRAZY and awesome but it tastes like 10 day old pizza, even after being heated. I don't think I'll be coming back here again.

Minus 1 star for no AC/ventilation. Minus another star for shorting me on the change. And minus another star for the lazy-ass service! I understand making hot pizzas in 90-degree heat sucks, but leaving your customer sweltering in wait while you sneak off to the walk-in fridge to snack on salami and make phone calls is just bad form. Of course, it's partially my fault for being too lazy to walk the extra block to 'Nochs... which is why I'm generously leaving two stars for the yummy sammiches and interesting pizza toppings.

I enjoy this place too. Okay prices. GREAT variety of toppings available. Yes it's a chain and kind of homogeneous, but dammit, I enjoy their food. Not the greatest slice in the world, but always worth a pop-in if I'm in The Garage and not in the mood for a burger or burrito (I would opt for Flat Patties first, and then either this place of Felipe's depending on my mood). There is always soem corny music dvd on their tv

This place is okay but the day I saw a roach running around and the crew laughing to try to play it off.. I was not impressed. Then again another roach came along and they stomped it. But the food is OKAY slices are huge but kinda pricey and some of them are quite dry. Btw the roach was on the floor, not on the countertop with the pizzas.

I'm sorry, you work in a pizza store. No reason to be a giant dildo. We took my parents-in-law and sis-in-law to the Garage, hoping that there'd be something to suit everyones taste buds. Dad and sis took off to Flat Patties, and Mom, hubby, and I went to Crazy Dough. The Mini Cooper sized selection of pizza was pretty impressive, I must admit. The Mediterranean themed slice of pizza wasn't bad either. Mom liked her slice, hubby thought his was good. All was good in Crazy Dough land until Dad and sis brought their bag of "outside" food into the table area of Crazy Dough. That's when some guy behind the counter started freaking out, swearing, and screaming at us to take ourselves and our offensive food outside of his establishment. I mean, I don't see any walls on this mo-fo, so what's all the fuss about? You have a restaurant in a huge building full of restaurants. Surely this happens ALL THE TIME, so deal with it. He's lucky my in laws were in town -- I was embarrassed that all the people there were staring at us like we'd gone and spit on all the patrons of the garage or something. Instead of hurling my pizza across the counter, I just said, "Well, I won't ever come back here again" and I meant it. WTF?

I always have to stop in and grab a slice or two when I am shopping at The Garage. I don't know if the pizza is the best in America I have had better but in that area I think it is some of the best. The pizza is good just have them toss it in the oven for a few seconds.

Don't do it! Read good reviews; must have been written by owners. Ordered plain cheese pizza -- best way to critique. Asked if I should order extra sauce (wouldn't have minded paying) & was told the sauce/cheese/dough ratio was 'perfect.' Ridiculous! Ordered thinnest crust yet it arrived thicker & with unacceptable & huge, dry bubbles. Could barely see the sauce let alone taste it & was unimpressed with the cheese ratio. So maybe it was "real." Shouldn't it be? On to the Cobb Salad. Or not. Not so fresh romaine with chewed up bit of bacon, chicken & cheese. -- the toppings were ground up into tiny bits & looked recycled. Might have asked for a do-over, but didn't dare eat the food again. For $25, we ate less than one slice of pizza & two forkfuls of the garbage salad. Oh, & the dressing was rancid. Waited far longer than an hour for delivery. Would have been happier if the order had never arrived. I almost feel bad for this business. I only feel disgusted & robbed. Again, DON"T GO THERE! One star is far too high.

Ok ok, I know I shouldn't get a salad at a pizza restaurant but I did. Ordered the Cobb salad with no blue cheese and no blue cheese dressing (yes I am a pain)- Server puts blue cheese on salad. I correct server. He gets mad and literally takes off his gloves and starts throwing around pizza dough and deputizes me to another server. Other server takes another 7 minutes before acknowledging me. Then proceeds to make me a crappy salad. At least she made it correctly. I was very apologetic about my special order, partially because I clearly upset the first server by not being able to digest dairy well. The service was very cold and abrupt. There was nothing good about my experience today!

I fully expected to be dissapointed by crazy dough's. It is a pleasant day outside and as I wander past the Garage Mall I decide to wander inside. As I'm entering the building I notice a sign for a place called Crazy Dough's. What the hell might as well give it a try. As I'm walking towards their oddly situated location I notice a sign of theirs claiming that they have the best pizza. That is very odd as I allready know that they don't have the best pizza. I still figure that I will go there anyway. On my way in I take a look at their slice options, and prices, after one glace I almost leave. But I don't. I fork over my cash and order my slice. When it is done being warmed up and is delivered to me my heart sinks. This looks like a rather pathetic piece of pizza. Money paid and slice in front of me I go ahead and eat it and I am pleasantly surprised. They have obviously put significant thought into how the ingredients will interact with eachother and they have created a very good product. That said it is really more akin to a piece of baked bread than a true pizza. Also the pitchers of PBR for $4 should be a great thing. It is really just ridiculous when you consider that is how much you paid for your slice. It would be like going to a gas station that sells 50 cent bottles of coke and charges ten dollars for a gallon of gas. They also seem incapable of wiping down the tables as every single one was covered in crumbs. The straight-gourmet pizza with cheap beer. What's good-Well balanced toppings The slap-overpriced, unclean and questionable status as pizza.

Coming from New York, I have had my share of pizza and this place is not amazing. The atmosphere is calm most of the time and the pizza isn't too overpriced. So if you are hungry and don't have much cash maybe crash here.

Very good. Love the variety. In my experience, everyone who works there is very friendly.

have you seen the size of the slices here? place is off the hook. best pizza in the square and possibly best pizza in the boston area. lots of great schoices, cheap as balls and where else can you get a pbr pitcher for under $5? what else would you want in an eatery? this place rocks.

I love me some Crazy Dough's. Though I don't like to admit it, I'm a pizzaholic at heart, and I deeply appreciate a good slice of pie. So why does my love for Crazy Dough's burn as brightly as five stars? For one, Crazy Dough's has chewy but not overly soft crust, which is fantastic. Second, their sauce is wicked good: "plum tomato sauce blended with roasted garlic and fresh herbs," to be exact. And they manage the sauce well, adding enough to bring flavor without being drippy/sloppy. Third, there's cheese for miles yet not a ton of grease (I think because they use low-fat mozzarella). Fourth, the price is right. Yeah, their prices have spiked a tiny bit recently, but what food prices *haven't* spiked recently? I think it's still only $6.00 for two slices of cheese and a drink or $7.00 for two slices of 'roni and a beverage. On that note, though they have more versatile options, I have only ever gotten cheese or pepperoni here (as it should be in a joint with paper plates and plastic forks). Really, I have never seen much reason to try something else: I like my fast-food pizza to be simple and scrumptious, and with Crazy Dough's, I get the right spices, huge slices, and great prices. What more can I ask for?

  • Kiki B.

how have i not reviewed crazy dough's yet?? so it's not so gourmet, and it's not quite as well done as pinocchio's a block away, but $4 for two huge slices of gooey cheese pizza and a fountain soda is hard to beat. dependable, always there - but why does it take 20 minutes to get a plain cheese pizza to go?

    (4)
  • Maria M.

As odd as it may sound to some of y'all, the potato and bacon pizza is the bomb (especially with a side of ranch dressing). Grab a slice or two of whatever you fancy and watch the Sox on their flatscreen TVs!

    (4)
  • Anonymous P.

OK pizza by the slice. Neat flavors, decent ingredients. Stick to the thin crust--the thick is too gummy.

    (2)
  • Joe b.

WICKED expensive. the pizza is called 'gourmet' but is assembled out of cans and bags infront of you. the pizza is quite good however, but unless you want the plain cheese you'll be spending upwards of 5 dollars for one peice of pizza. No dice. But their combo of 2 slics of cheese and an infinate refil drink for 4 bills is pretty sweet. check it out if you're around, but dont go out of your way...

    (3)
  • Josh F.

Not bad for chain pizza, but no where near as good as nearby Pinnochio's. Slices cost a little more than one would expect from a quick mall-based store. The guys who work there at night sometimes play Ozzy videos on the flat-screen tv.

    (2)
  • Anna S.

Their pizza is absolutely delicious, especially with their great deal of four dollars for two slices and a soda. The atmosphere is pleasent, as far as small pizza shops go. It can get a little noisy from time to time and watch out, they may run out of pizza. So hurry!

How to locate Crazy Dough's - get over to The Garage in Harvard Square at 36 JFK Street. Head in and find the Ben & Jerry's in the food court on the ground floor. Facing Ben & Jerry's, look left, and you'll see a flight of stairs. Crazy Dough is up there. Counter service, so I checked out the available slices. Not much choice. I came at the wrong time, since when I left, I found the entire counter covered with both trays of square Sicilian pieces and full round pies. But I made do and ordered a potato Sicilian for $3.65 ($3.91 after tax). They warmed it up pretty quick. It probably could have done with a longer trip through the heat, but whatevers. Found plastic utensils in the corner and got eating. The bread was airy, a bit like focaccia though not as thick. The toppings were fine. I realized when I was near done that this was a tomato sauceless slice. Eh, it was fine. Not the healthiest option, but it handled my light appetite well enough that night. Castle was up on the flat screen. I watched it for a bit before I busted my own table and departed.

Be warned before you go: I think this place is permanently closed. The last 3 times I came here it was 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on a Saturday or Sunday, all 3 times it was closed off but the rest of the food court was open. Why did I come to Crazy Dough 3 times? Well, I make a lot of mistakes in life. One of those mistakes is trading the possibility of good food for cheapness or convenience. Don't be like me. Be better than me.

Absolutely solid pizza joint for lunch. I come here for my go-to "dang, I forgot my lunch" lunch. The selection of pizza is very good. The selection is better at the beginning of the lunch period; towards 2 or 3, I've found that the selection and quality can dwindle. What's more is that the music is top notch: Tribe, ratatat, mos def. I could just chill there all day if I had the time. But alas, I am a working man and I must leave. The staff there are super chill and will engage in a quick NBA rap session if you please. In summation, it's cheap(ish), quick, and delicious.

I've been eating pizza at this location for 20 years now! It's just as good now as it was back then. I look forward to when I have to take the commuter rail into Boston because I know I can have a slice at North Station before I get on the train to come back home. It's that good! You must get a personal pan of the pizza that has pine nuts, caramelized onions, gorgonzola, potato, pesto and maybe I'm missing something but you will know which one I am describing because it will say "voted America's best pizza in 2004". The crust is insanely good because it's not too over baked and dry like upper crust but isn't too soft and doughy like most neighborhood pizza joints. It's a classic NY style pizza. Go get you some now.

    (5)
  • Deborah C.

What a waste of a good location! I really liked the design of the place for a pizza joint, and the Sicialian style pizza was ok, considering the creep behind the counter heated it for all of 20 seconds. The worst part was the God awful, blasting weirdo music, designed to keep anyone from wanting to sit up there while Mr. Wonderful was busy with his little prep work. It boggles my mind that an owner will shell out big bucks to rent here, and then have an anti-social person behind the counter. I ate and the one other person did and got the hell out of there.

I've worked in Harvard Sq for 3 years and have always skipped Crazy Doughs. Today I decided to check it out and it was the absolute worst pizza I've ever had. Cold too. I will never go back. It's like Sbarro but worse and with a slimmer selection. To top it off, I think it made me sick.

I will never order from here again. I wanted to try a new place so I chose here. Ordered my calzone and cheese breadsticks via Grubhub at 7:21 pm tonight and did not receive my food until 9:01 pm. Estimated delivery was 8-8:05. I called twice to ask where my food was and the person said it was on the way. That was at 8:30. Called back at 8:55 and they said it should have been there. My food arrived a few minutes later. The breadsticks were ice cold and as hard as a rock and the calzone was a mushy mess. I tried to salvage the breadsticks but they were terrible after I heated them up. The calzone (which sounded delicious - buffalo chicken, cheese, and bacon) was horrendous. I took a few bites and tossed it all in the trash. I want my money back but don't feel like dealing with it so here I am warning you to NEVER order from here. ---- EDIT I woke up at 3 am and have been unbelievably sick all night and all day. Had to call out of work today. I have been huddled up in a ball in the bathroom since the middle of the night.

    (1)
  • Liliya M.

This place has been a bit of a downer lately. The upstairs is seemingly always empty and the workers just blast their hip-hop and pretend like they are doing you a favor by heating up a slice of pizza for you.

  • Joy J.

I used to get salad bread bowls from here and they were delicious. I had one today and it. just. wasn't. good. AT ALL. I wasted 12 bucks. The bowl was so stale I couldn't eat it. The chicken wasn't fresh and everything was just super subpar. It looks good. But it's not. Don't waste your money.

  • Jimmy D.

Food preparation and presentation was beyond unacceptable. I ordered a buffalo chickens calzone and wings for delivery. It had been over an hour before I decided to call back to get a status of the order. I was told it was a slow night because it was snowing (that I understand and am not mad about). After another 30 minutes I get the call to come down stairs...driver is at the wrong place. Takes another 30 minutes for him to make it to me. By the time I grab the food (got a free cookie which was cool), and head to my room I notice the forgot the marinara and blue cheese that is WRITTEN ON THE RECEIPT! I was too hungry to wait for another 2 hours for them to bring the sauce, so I dug in. It was a very below par calzone. I head for the chicken wings (10 honey bbq and 10 teriyaki), which I believed they couldn't get wrong, and the damn chicken had no sauce!! They put the sauce in a side tray!! Who does that. I had to dip my chicken in the sauce that should've been on it!! How much more time does it take to put the Chicken AND SAUCE in a tray and shake it up?!?! Apparently to long to make t worth it. Anywho....I know this was a long review but I thought I should give as much info as possible to help I make your decision. Choose another place! Poor presentation Poor attention to detail and Decent food!

  • Wonyoung J.

The pizza is absolutely delicious. It's perfect. I personally like to top it with bacon and potatoes. The Sicilian pizzas are awesome. The calzones are great. Terrible service and hygiene. Particularly the attitude of the workers. Last time I went, they served my order wrong and I asked for a remade one. They just told me to get out if I was going to "be that way".

I got cheese and I'd say it was pretty average. Thin crust which I love but it was a bit burnt. Staff seemed bored.

    (3)
  • Bridget B.

Blah. I'm a pizza snob. I think that nothing is better than a -good- plain piece of pizza. No taco shells, no macaroni, no veal or foie gras, nothing beats a good, simple piece of pizza made with fresh, quality ingredients. Crazy Dough just throws tons of stuff on pizza dough and calls it pizza. Nothing is particularly good or bad, just busy.

    (2)
  • Brian D.

I'm going to keep this really, really, really simple. Crazy Dough's is my default, quick, lunch stop in Harvard Square. I have one reason to share with you as to why you might make a habit of this spot. Here goes, buffalo chicken, pepperoni, pineapple, Sicilian crust, slice of pie. HOLY SMOKES. That's one hell of a slice. It's cheap. It's quick. It's good people watching. Color me Crazy.

Just not so good in any way. Also they didn't even bother to heat up the slice I bought. I miss "Cafe A" which used to be in this location years ago; they had some tasty pizza. I actually just googled to get the full name of my beloved childhood pizza joint and found a blog post - binnallofamerica.com/joe… - which does a better job of describing the situation than I could: 'Torrents of disappointment came raining down [when Cafe Aventura closed]. Still, the food [at Crazy Dough's Pizza] looked exactly the same-pizza wise, they had all of Aventura's menu. So, I ordered two cheese and a pepsi, thinking that perhaps they copied Aventura's recipe too. They did not. This was substandard mall/suburb quality pizza. It was as bland as the state of Missouri and less cheesey (not in a good way). This is a-typical f**king pizza, they same you can get anywhere else, even Saint Louis University's cafeterias. The Latinos and Latina ( [heart emoji] sigh...) talking about Christ knows what, gone. The owners, with the vintage "Na`th" End Boston accent talking about the Red Sox, gone. Did I mention the chic behind the counter? Well she was gone too. Cafe Aventura is no more and in its place is another monument raised by the corporate fascists stabbing their way into the hearts of our cities for the sake of destroying all ethnic and regional distinctiveness and creating a mass marketable cattle, I mean, cash base, that they can herd into Abercrombie and Fitch.'

If there were a contest for the saddest-looking pizza, Crazy Dough's would be a clear winner. These slices could be cast in an ASPCA commercial voiced-over by Sarah McLahlan. I didn't even know pizza could look depressing, but I actually feel a sense of defeat at the sight of CD's sorry-looking selection. Grab any of the far better offerings in the garage and come here only for the (suspiciously) cheap pitcher of PBR. Don't look at the pizza.

    (2)
  • Jian Cai Z.

The selection of pizza slices are great! I'd have to say that the pizza tastes even better than they look. I personally think the items they have are just a tad on the pricy side.

    (4)
  • Dolly V.

$5 pitchers of PBR ... Need I say more?, lol. Okay, I also had a slice. It was kinda pricy but it was not bad. It's not New York pizza but still pretty good. They also have a special if you spend $15 on pizza.

    (4)
  • Sarah G.

You really have to be crazy for eating pure bread/crust non-stop with your pizza to like Crazy Dough's pizza. We ordered a bunch of pizzas from here for a small event we had and I heard pretty much everyone talking about how much bread there was on their slices and how little actual pizza they tasted. And I agree. There was pretty much no sauce, no flavor, no cheese...YES, I SAID NO CHEESE! It is a pizza! You order a pizza for the carbs and for the cheese. And yes, for the sauce too, but really a pizza without cheese really isn't pizza. So if you are going to put the carb part of your pizza on steroids you need to up everything else on top of the pizza too! Their BBQ chicken pizza was the best of the three kinds I tried, but I think that is only because mentally I really like BBQ chicken pizzas so I associated that while I ate those slices in comparison to the cheese and the pepperoni. All in all, definitely not crazy about Crazy Dough. But it does make sense why they call themselves Crazy Dough since they are clearly very very crazy for that dough of theirs!!

  • Ambrose C.

This is another place that I turn to whenever I am in Harvard Square, and somewhat in the mood for some adequate pizza. The pizza is not really that great, but it's not bad as well. Whenever I come here, I usually go for the ones with the special toppings, such as the BBQ chicken. A fairly good advantage that this place has is that it can serve beer, so this is not a bad option if you need some alcohol in your body to wash down that pizza that is making you really thirsty. These beers include Sam Adams and Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) The pizza they serve was probably one of the thinnest pizzas I have eaten, but the chunks of meat are fairly thick and meaty though for a pizza topping, so that's a plus, but I found the crusts just average. Sicilian slices are a better option if you do not want thin crusts, but they tend to be pricier. This would not be one of my top choices to get food in Harvard Square, but the pizza is not bad, just tastily passable, and you can get beer with your pizza if you really need to get a good dosage of booze after a really tough day or if you really want to get wasted before 10 PM at a place that is not a bar.

    (3)
  • Laura C.

Well id like to review the pizza but since I ordered it over an hour and a half ago and it still had yet to show up I can't really do that! I was told it would take 45 minutes, I'm now going on an hour and forty five minutes. I have already called twice and all they say is, the driver left a while ago, they are on their way. I just read a review and see that I'm not the only one in this situation. Not sure how the pizza will be if I ever get it, but clearly their customer service is fantastic!

    (1)
  • Mark G.

They put WAYYYY too many onions on the pizzas. They should really cut back on that. Wish the crust was thicker too.

    (2)
  • Marisol H.

I come here every so often for the following reasons: 1. I go to school nearby. It's on my way from dorm to class. 2. 2 Pepperoni slices + Drink special is cheap 3. It's greasy and quick and filling for lunch on the go. I ventured out of my pepperoni combo once to try the crazy topping Sicilian slices and I was not impressed.

    (3)
  • Sean J.

Excellent cheap pizza and PBR on tap. The only downside is that there isn't a whole lot of room to sit and eat. Also, if you plan on taking advantage of their cheap beer ($5 pitchers) you have to buy food with your order. They claim it's part of their liquor license.

    (5)
  • Rich K.

We got there 30 minutes before they closed on a Friday night (6/21/13, Harvard Square) and the staff could not have been less pleased to see us. They were downright hostile. At least the pizza was good even though we only ate one slice from the two large pizzas before the staff told us to leave. Great pizza, worst service ever!

    (2)
  • Rani P.

Best pizza in boston. And if the awesome pizza and friendly staff isn't enough- it's in a great hidden location that will impress any non-bostonian. (Although almost anyone who has been to Harvard Square knows about the garage) I'm a hands down margarita pizza fan- but a lot of my friends like the Cheeseburger.

    (4)
  • Deanna D.

I have been to Crazy Dough about 4 times and I enjoyed it every time. The place is clean and the staff has been very friendly every time. The PBR for a $1 is a great way to wash down the pizza! The prices are pretty cheap and the quality is good. They are also super fast and it's never crowded. The square pizza dough is really soft and not greasy like most pizza places. The choices of toppings are always changing but some of my favorites are the veggie pizza with the cilantro drizzle on top and the ricotta, spinach and mushroom with balsamic drizzle. My bf likes the potato bacon pizza and the bbq pizza. It's not as good as Ernesto's or Antonio's but its decent pizza. It's a place worth stopping by if you are in the area and looking for a quick and cheap bite.

  • Chris W.

I can't believe I am seeing so many so-so reviews for this place. Crazy Dough's is one of the more underrated pizza places in the area. The selection of slices is great and brings me fond memories of Antonio's Pizza in Amherst, Ma. The prices on their specials are reasonable. Where they really shine is their Sicilian slices. For some reason, people have decided that if a pizza is square then that means it's Sicilian style. Well they are wrong, super wrong. See, a Sicilian slice is about the spongy, crispy, soft and crunchy oxymoron of a pizza that is also a little (read 'perfectly') greasy. Crazy Dough's does Sicilian like it is supposed to be done. Yes, I have had Leones. It's good, but it's just square thick crust pizza. Crazy Dough's is where it's at for pizza in Harvard Square in my most humblest opinion :)

  • Meliza Anne M.

I don't like the texture of the crust. I know that's what people go for when they come here and they enjoy the flakiness, but it is just not my cup of tea. The crust to topping ratio of some of the pizzas that I got were also not good. The mixtures of toppings are pretty creative, but other than that, I'm just not into it. It's the crust that really throws me off.

    (1)
  • Eric S.

I like how their pizzas have a crispy thin crust (that is a personal preference) The pizzas taste very good although the prices for the sices are a bit steep. The personal pizza + drink for $5.99 is a pretty good deal. The first time I went, I really liked it. The second time, the guy making my pizza had no idea what he was doing and had to ask the other guy every time before he did something.

One of my favorite places to go for pizza. The mushroom, cheese, &bruschetta with mozzarella are all great slices to try. As a college student pizza is a staple to my diet for financial reasons obviously. Crazy Doughs is the perfect place to get pizza cause it's cheap and filling. The atmosphere of the Garage makes it interesting too. I often go there as a place to chow down while studying/doing work.

Located in The Garage in Harvard Square this seems like an ideal place to grab a bite to eat and some drinks before heading out for the night. I've been going for lunch a lot, so I haven't been enjoying the dirt cheap drafts ($1!) or pitchers but you can't beat those prices. The regular pizza is decent, standard pizza fare. A little on the greasy side but tasty and affordable. They really shine with their sicilian slices though, which are big and always pack a great medley of toppings. I especially like the Buffalo Chicken and Hawaiian slices they have frequently. The staff is very friendly and I like that they always have SportsCenter on when I come in for lunch, though your mileage my vary there. Free refills on soda are great as well. Seating is pretty limited, so going with a large group isn't advised, but as a quick bite for lunch or a dinner with a couple friends the space is perfect.

Reheated old slices in the oven that didn't really heat them at all. Not even close to fresh pizza, and besides that the flavors were over all mediocre.

So, my grandma once said "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Actually, that's a lie, my grandma never said that, she's always been too busy telling me that it doesn't matter if you're smart as long as you're pretty and that Dick Cheney is a clone, but SOMEONE'S grandma probably said that, and I don't want to be rude to someone's grandma. Crazy Dough is cheap and fast. There's not single horrible thing wrong with crazy dough, rather, there's a constellation of minor things wrong that add up to a totally "meh" experience. Firstly, the pizza just doesn't taste very good. It's pretty boring, everything tastes kind of sweet (even the crrrraaaazy toppings), and the dough has a sort of weird chewy consistency I don't normally associate with pizza or, you know, food. The pizzas are also often slightly burnt on the bottom. The environment is unpleasant. It's oddly lit, usually whatever temperature you don't want to be at the time, and noisy. Basically, you go in, shove your pizza in your mouth as quickly as possible so you don't taste it and you don't have to spend any longer in there than necessary, and leave. But, hey, you get to do all that for only 5 or 6 dollars!

Ok, so you're walking around in Harvard Square and you see the sign outside Crazy Dough's happily proclaiming that they have $5 lunch specials and $4 pitchers of beer. "Hot damn," you might think to yourself, "this is such a deal!" Well, maybe. The dirty little secret here is that you have to buy food in order to get beer. Suppose you're walking around on a winter afternoon with a couple friends and decide you want have some next-to-free beer in the hideously cafeteria-lit environment of The Garage. No such luck unless you all get slices of mediocre pizza also! Bleh. Want cheap pizza? Try Pinocchio's down JFK. Want cheap beer? Be sure you want cheap pizza too. Want both? Hit Newtowne Grill's pizza-and-beer special in Porter and enjoy a more comfortable space without high schoolers and fluorescent lighting.

If you're starving in The Garage I guess this pizza is ok and super cheap. But I found it super greasy and lacking in flavor awesomeness. But it's pizza, so it's almost always edible, even if it stinks. The people behind the counter were nice though, thumbs up for that!

  • Spottenheim C.

I would have never found this place if not for the fact that I could smell the pizza inside the Garage. They advertise that their pizza is award winning and I do say that the pizza recipe is contest competitive. The sauces and the dough uses olive oil so those with soybean oil allergies can eat the pizza here. The slices are generous and the crust crispy, sauce complementing and the cheese tasty. They oven bake the chicken wings. The decor is for a college area and is bare bones. It could be better kept and cleaner overall. The price is good and the portions large. The staff is not trained in food allergies so those of us with food allergies should proceed with caution.

I really wanted to like this place. It's only a few bucks for a small one person pizza and they have creative toppings. But the bottom of my pizza was crusted with black burnt pieces. Not like my pizza was burnt itself, but more like all the burnt scraps inside the pizza oven got stuck to my pizza. Imagine not cleaning the pan in your oven for weeks then throwing a frozen pizza on it and letting it cook slow ly letting those lttle pieces of charcole embedding themselves into the crust. I will not be back.

I kinda dig this place. I didn't love it, but I definitely want to go back and try a few more of their signature pizzas Although it is not the best pizza I have ever had, I am still intrigued.... Each pizza seems pretty hit or miss; it doesn't seem like there is too much consistency going on. But I did take a good long look at their menu and I agree they have some really cool and creative ingredient combinations. I have been really craving a calzone as of late and might try one here soon so expect an update... It's three stars for now because I wasn't too blown away by the quality or the texture, but I did enjoy the flavors of their balsamic and tomato basil pizza.

Anyone who takes over Cafe A's space has big shoes to fill. The weird thing about this place is that the pizza looks incredible. The display case is full of all different varities of colorful, decent sized slices. And yet... every time I try it, it tastes slightly flavorless. Each slice I've tried here, it feels like there's something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. I always leave feeling slightly underwhelmed, and that something is off. I'll take Pinocchio's over this place any day.

I went to stop in here waiting for a ride the other day with a friend of mine. I'd like to say that I ordered an interesting slice of pizza and some cheap beer, but the kid at the counter was such a jerk that we walked out before even finishing our order. I might go to another crazy dough's but don't order beer here before you decide what you want to eat or you'll be treated like a worthless drunkard.

  • Lisa M. K.

Yesterday after having lunch there I was musing that "Crazy Dough" was a play on words... meaning both crazy floury mixture and crazy money. Because the drink and the two small-to-average size slices I got - sitting out and looking withered then thrown in the oven until they were crunchy and dry-as-bone - cost me over $9. But then I see that half the reviews here describe the pizza as "cheap". Sorry, but $3+ slices are not cheap to me. I (nicely) asked the guy to verify the price so it was not a mistake. So they get 2 stars because for a $3 slice, the pizza was pretty meh. The toppings were probably good when originally made but were so crunchy and dry but the time they sat out and then were re-heated (too much). Can't imagine I'd come back here.

Food was ok. Nothing that great. And they lose a star for not having ANY ventilation. I was not happy to have to sweat while eating mediocre pizza.

Pros: Crazy variety of pizza! (if the name didn't tip you off) Dollar Drafts! (i didn't even think this was legal in mass) Drafts! (hell any kind of beer with pizza is a win-win) Cons: Its in the garage (wading through teeniboppers) Pizza can be a little too crispy (personal taste) Drafts are served in dixie cups (any port in a storm right?) So there's alot of pros and cons to account for but overall I dig this place. I wouldn't make it an evening? But its definitely a good start to an early evening of descending on Harvard square

Unlike most Boston-area pizza joints, Crazy Dough's has a wider variety of slices than just cheese and pepperoni. Being allergic to tomatoes, eating pizza can be tricky, but Crazy Dough's has a number of non-tomato/white slices available at most times, and plenty of specialty pies one can order as well. They have beer available, including dirt-cheap PBR. If you ever want to build up a buzz before heading to a pricier bar, look no further. Minus points for having their radio tuned to WBOS, easily the worst music station in Boston.

    (3)
  • Dave M.

Terrible customer service! I took a group of kids here and we were treated like dirt. Even the kids noticed and questioned it. As far as the pizza goes....eh....I can do without it. Nothing to write home about and certainly not worth the horrid service. The people at the counter should learn to pretend to like their jobs. NEVER AGAIN!

  • Janak S.

This is place is a really good pizza place. I had a slice of tomato basil mozzarella and it was very good. The Parmesan cheese was very tasty, real cheese not the normal pulverized crap. Actually, this cheese was the highlight of eating there, it was really good. The crushed red pepper were pretty spicy definitely above average quality.

5 stars for $5 dollar pitchers of pbr. 1 star for everything else. solid 3 stars.

Tasty, friendly, definitely needs better sanitation, though. Someone needs to empty trash, wipe down tables and counters, and keep things behind the counter a lot neater and cleaner. Trash bins need to be covered up better.

  • Dal C.

I had a pesto veggie pizza at crazy dough's last night and I thought it was damn good!!! Not much more to say; I was curious about some of the reviews I read hear; one woman gave a bad review because she had to look at another woman's fat ass coming out of the top of her pants while she ate; that sounds pretty traumatic, but it doesn't really speak to the quality of the pizza; another guy was upset because they played WBOS as the radio station ; again, not really relevant to the quality of the food, and I happen to like WBOS; maybe you should only stick to restaurants that play Jam'n 94.5 or whatever your favorite radio station is!! Anyway, try them out before you believe some of these lame reviews.

Lots of awards, but not sure if they are deserving or what the methodology to determine the award was. Crazy Dough is an ok slice. Good for convenience and unique toppings, but lags in execution of crust. Maybe because Crazy Dough's means they do their dough differently so you shouldn't expect it to be traditionally accepted crusts?

    (3)
  • Kristina D.

I had no idea that the toppings actually were crazy until early today. My math methods professor ordered for our 4pm-7pm Monday class sometimes, and he always picked plain cheese. Today, finding pizza topped with 1) chicken parm and 2) goat cheese and balsamic vinaigrette was swizzeet! You can get two "gourmet" (aka very odd) triangle slices and a medium Pepsi product for $7. My classmate got a signature salad for $3, and it too looked swizzeet. Also, $4 PBR pitchers and $1 PBR drafts? I haven't seen such pricing since Virginia. When I went up to pay and saw the sign on the cash register, I thought it was a mirage until I looked and saw the PBR tap.

This place isn't that awesome. We had a cheese, a pineapple, and a bacone slice. Each worse than the other. It went like this, pineapple sucky, bacon, meh, and cheese, the better of the 3. Go search for pizza elsewhere, unless you want a drink, because that was the best part. Beer available, for a buck. awesome. Doesn't make up for the crust burnt, and not in a good way, there not being enough sauce, and some of the slices were missing flavor. You'll find better places in cambridge.

  • Rich F.

This was my second trip to Crazy Dough and it was just as good this time around. This is not really the hangout with a large group type of place, but for food court food it is pretty good. I got the chicken bacon ranch gormet today and it was really good. The dough is what sets this pizza apart. It is light and airy and slightly crunchy. The toppings were not very ample, but they were enough. I really like the pan style square pizza slices and they are huge. This place is great for a quick bit for lunch or dinner. Plus there are cheap pitchers of beer!!!

Crazy-good margherita pizza with its chunky tomatoes and softly shredded basil, so delicious in my mouth. Not so delicious in my throat later, lots of heartburn, and therefore, heartbreak.

  • D M.

Jesse and I stopped in here the other afternoon before catching a movie, and it was okay. There seemed to be two people working, and while they were speedy and efficient, they could have used a few more people to move the line a little quicker. We got Sicilian slices for a change of pace. I went for the Nutty Tuscan and Jesse went for the Meatball. Mine was really tasty, with lots of pesto and pine nuts atop, and Jesse's was a little bit on the crunchy side. For a little over $8, it was an okay lunch. Nothing super amazing, but I saw a sign for $1 drafts. Can't go wrong with that.

Stick with the square pizza the "triangles" are not fun to eat! I find the help runs between friendly to surly. I saw the girl who i bought a slice from panhandleing by the subway entrance a couple of hours later, she was unpleasant there too. I do have to admit I go almost everyday as it is uber cheap!

  • Julia N.

I always get a bad tummy ache after eating their pizza which sucks! It smells and looks so good, but doesn't agree with me. My best friend who works in Harvard square comes here for their salads in a bread bowl, which look awesome, but I will not risk feeling sick anymore. Service is terrible FYI.

  • Alexandra K.

I enjoyed Crazy Dough's Pizza. I tried their buffalo chicken pizza and it was pretty good. I would have preferred that they had left the banana peppers off as I do not like that blend of flavors. The pizza was pretty spicy and I tend to want some ranch dressing to help cool it down, but I didn't see them offer it. The dough itself was really good. It wasn't their triangular shaped flat crust pizza but instead this thicker crust square pizza. The dough was cooked really well. The reheating process did char the bottom a bit too much though. I would recommend this for a quick lunch. Tastes good!

  • Adam M.

the best and one of the cheapest places in Harvard square to get something to eat, 5 bucks for 2 LARGE slices and a drink, cant beat it. Can get crowded due to limited seating, but most people are in and out so not a big deal.

    (5)
  • Jenn H.

I like Crazy Doughs concept. The pizza looks like it could be good. The problem is that it's been sitting out for hours. It's crusty and the cheese is way past it's prime. I work in Harvard Square and want to love this place, but the last few times have been inedible.

    (2)
  • Jen S.

OK pizza. Just OK. The only thing I remember about this location is the woman sitting across the room from me wearing jeans that were a bit too low (or too loose). Yeah, I saw 1/2 of her ass. Not a nice looking ass, either. This was like saggy, late middle aged woman ass. I don't think, in my right mind, that I can ever go back and eat pizza there. I'll just see ass instead of pepperoni. Traumatizing. My eyes hurt now just thinking about it!

    (2)
  • Lia M.

This place claims to have won pizza competitions? Whatever. I did not care for it. I had a slice of cheese & a slice of margherita. I loved the crust - it was crispy, but not overly crispy. This pizza was just cheesy, oily, and no flavor, along with no whole wheat crust options. Pass, especially as there are better places to eat in Harvard Square. Staff was not at all friendly or helpful.

    (2)
  • Erica S.

I'm pretty underwhelmed by their pizza. It's kinda of cheap, but not as cheap as Pinnocchio's. It's good drunk food, but not as good as Pinnocchio's. They're open late... but so is Pinnocchio's. BUT they do have more gourmet toppings, I'll give them that. I like that I can get pesto and heirloom tomatoes, or for the meat eaters they have yummy looking grilled chicken pizzas. Definitely don't come here for the ambiance or the service (both are pretty stale), but sure, grab a slice if you're wandering around Harvard and need a late night slice. I mean, ALL pizza is at least kind of good, right?

    (3)
  • Jeremy K.

I don't quite understand how they hell they won any awards for their pizzas. Although their recipes are very original, such as their reuben pizza which is a twist on the sandwich in which the pizza is topped with pastrami, sauerkraut and Russian dressing, their crust doesnt' cut it for me. I found it too thick and crispy... and oily. It just didn't feel right from the start. And although they have beer, I tried their fountain sodas and found that their selection was very flat (I tried 3 different ones). I'd recommend it if your very hungry and in a rush but other than that there's plenty more places in that area that would be better.

They gave us a free slice of pizza yummmmm! Cheap beers too ;) Tables are still gross and greasy

I'm inherently skeptical of anything labelled "best __ in ___", and often discover that what they are best at is self-promotion and little more. So to walk in to Crazy Dough's and see them touting the "Best Pizza in America" (2 years!), well... I ordered the BBQ Chicken personal pizza, which I'll confess wasn't BAD. It certainly wasn't the best - the BBQ Chicken at Canestaro's is FAR superior, and I can name half a dozen pizza joints I like better than Crazy Dough's, including a few right here in Boston - but it wasn't BAD. If you're in the Square though and you want a slice, just go to Pinocchio's. I prefer the latter, anyway, but maybe that's just me. So what have we learned today kiddies? Taste is subjective, and one's best may be another's bust. And just because my mother tells me, "yes Hugh, I'm certain you ARE the best reviewer on Yelp," doesn't mean I actually am... (Thanks Mom! Love you!)

Wednesday, April 2 Interesting pizza toppings. Oppressively hot and stale air. People crowd the area where the warmed pizza slices are brought to and take other people's slices. Potato and Bacon Sicillian = 4 stars (would be 5 if the crust wasn't over done from sitting) Chicken Cordon Bleu Sicillian = 2 stars (would be four stars if they didn't accidentally (?) put buffalo sauce on it) Overall an average experience. Just average. Can I give 2.5 stars?

    (3)
  • Lena C.

I find Crazy Doughs to be kind of hit or miss. Sometimes it's really great. Sometimes its kind of gross. And pretty much all the time the service is terrible. Still-- I do love the pizza when it's good, so I keep going back. And if you're up for a bit of a risk, I say go for it.

  • Melinda M.

Alright guys, I'm not from around here so maybe thats why I expect there to be a large amount of dough in my pizza, and maybe why I disagree with everyone about this place. When I walked in and saw that the slices here were at least an inch high I got excited, after I saw that I could add ANOTHER layer of carbs with the potato bacon cheese slice I called my friend in Seattle with tears in my eyes. Thank you crazy dough for understanding my need for thick, delicious crust!! 5 stars for the pizza and 3 for the rest of the place, the people aren't always the friendliest and the tables are always dirty.

Pizza is almost always good. This is just a rule. It's almost never great, but screwing it up badly is the kind of thing that puts decent folk out of business. Crazy Dough is pretty good pizza. Apparently in 1907 it was voted best pizza in the country or world, but that's like saying Starbucks is the best coffee because not everyone has access to the one shop in Wisconsin (or wherever) that actually DOES have the best. I bought the $5 two-slice-and-a-soda-deal. You get to choose from Pepperoni, Mushroom and Sausage, which I think is pretty generous. She took my slices (pep/mush) and threw them in the oven to re-heat. Grrr. That's ok though, unless the crust is going to be all hard and pretzel-like. BIG THUMBS DOWN on only having Pepsi products. I mean, this is the 21st century we're talking about here. The slices were generous, although completely different sizes. The crust on the pepperoni slice was a good foot across, and hard and pretzel-like. *le sigh* The sauce was sweet and tomato-y, not a bad thing, if that is your thing. It's not my thing, but I don't really mind. Good pizza, but the re-heat was after too long and too dry. All this would have led to a 2* review if it weren't for the fact that they have PBR on tap, $1 draughts (plastic Dixie cup size) and $4 PITCHERS!! REAL SIZE!! I didn't know this, and would go back there and eat their cardboard just for this one reason.

    (3)
  • Nicholas P.

They have a great lunchtime deal. For just $6 you can get two gourmet slices of pizza and a soda. The staff is always friendly and, frankly, are a bit wacky---just like the pizza! If you want the special, big-square cut slices you'll be able to see many options in their pizza display case. I'd suggest trying to avoid the lunchtime rush. The line can go down the stairs. They always have good music selections going on and local sports in the evening.

    (5)
  • Jenna H.

Crazy Dough's offers a perfectly adequate slice of pizza, and the prices pretty much can't be beat; you can get 2 slices of cheese and a soda for $5. There seemed to be a good selection of creative slices as well. However, the food court atmosphere and the check out guys that acted pissed that I would dare to trouble them with my pizza order mean that I'll probably stick to a few other places in Harvard Square when I want a cheap slice.

    (3)
  • Eugene D.

When the wait is too long at fancier restaurants in Harvard Square, this is a great alternative. Good pizza, convenient location, and low prices make this spot worth visiting!

    (3)
  • Bret C.

Solid pizza, great lunchtime deal - 2 slices and a drink for a low price It has terrible ventilation, though. Hard to sit up there (upper level of the Garage) on a warm day. Check it out for a quick bite to eat.

  • Carrie M.

If I wanted to reheat my pizza, I would have stayed home and eaten leftovers. That said, I understand that when you have an establishment that offers pizza by the slice, it's going to be pre-made and reheated. Yuck. Reheating aside, I wasn't wow'd by the pizza here. Everything about it was just OK, and the eggplant on it was less than OK. I think I even took some of it off my slice. The pizza served its purpose as my stomach didn't growl during the movie. That said, next time I'm heading to the movies I'd line up somewhere else to stop first!

    (2)
  • Melissa M.

Crazy Doughs? More like Crazy No's or Crazy Ho's depending on the time you are eating at this establishment. I normally get my food and run down the scary steps into the urine soaked streets of Harvard Square. This place is just too overrun with all walks for me to hang there. Their pizza always dissapoints me because the dought is always too thick and the plate they give you is akin to that of a brown paper towel in an elementary school bathroom. The grease just saturates the plate. They have PBR here so if that is your thing more power to you.

    (2)
  • Walter G.

pizza's creative, but middle of the road. main reason to come here is for the $4 PBR pitchers. yes, you read that correctly, FOUR DOLLAR PBR PITCHERS. awesome.

    (4)
  • Stephen D.

Crazy Dough gets a resounding M'EH from me. Viva Cafe A's (remember? REMEMBER???) It's so basic it hurts. This place is a kind of Any Port in a Storm place to grab a slice. If you're in a hurry, ok, maybe, but there's Pinnochios right around the corner.. Wicked friggin' M'EH.

    (3)
  • Doug W.

I like this place. I'm usually not too much of a pizza snob (Inbound Pizza being the exception of course) and while Crazy Dough's might not be the best I've ever had, I've always found their slices tasty, their service friendly and quick, and their prices reasonable. I usually opt for their cheese or pepperoni special, which runs $4 or $5 respectively for two generous-sized slices and a soda. Plus, they either allow free refills, or I've always been too ninja-stealth to get caught. Either way, it works if you're the thirsty type. As far as quick lunches go, this place is a pretty good option for anyone in the Harvard Square area.

  • Lindsay D.

I walked into this place half in the bag one night and fell in love. The guy behind the counter was sweet as pie and made sure that I recieved the piece of pizza I requested (I actually requested a specific slice) and it was piping hot after re-heating, an uncommon occurance in these parts. 5 Stars for him. Unfortunately for Crazy Dough's in Harvard Square, the super-nice guy can't work everyday. The second time I went in (partially in the bag and this time with 3 extra people in tow) my favorite counter person ever was replaced with Boston's equivalent of the Soup Nazi, yelling at us and not heating my pizza up to piping hot expectations. Not cool, dude. 1 Star.

    (3)
  • Michael C.

One of their pizzas was voted the best pizza in the country. They're proud of it. They put up signs about it. They talk about it on my favorite show, the Phantom Gourmet. Nonetheless, three stars. No more. Once I tried one of their fancy pizzas. It had potato in it, I think. It was good. But I'm a poor grad student, so I usually take their more reasonable cheese pizza deal: two big slices plus a drink for $4. The cheese pizza, unlike the fancy kinds, is mediocre. It's the same style as Sbarro, the place you always find in airport and mall food courts. Not quite as good as Sbarro, in fact. Just decent. The atmosphere is nothing to rave about. The Garage is a rather uninspiring place, but their alcove is even less inspiring. It feels cramped and dark. It's a nice place to feel warm when you sit by the window watching the snow fall, but even then it's not quite clean enough, and usually a bit too crowded/cramped, to be perfect. I don't hate this place. It serves its purpose: cheap pizza, in both senses of the word. I eat lunch there occasionally. Maybe I should try more of their fancier pizzas, maybe then my rating would change.

  • Chloe S.

Went here last friday night for a quick bite before heading to the Brattle. Good pizza, good service and you can't beat $1 PBR on tap (even if it does come in the tiniest cup ever). I had low expectations, so it probably makes sense that I was pleasantly surprised, I was especially happy that they served alcohol. The pizza was good - they're special slices are tastier than the plain pepperoni - the dough was good quality and the pizza wasn't greasy. Good crust! I didn't try the salads, but saw one on the way out and it at least looked fresh and yummy.

  • Nick B.

Sure, it's crazy. But it's the annoying Dr. Demento brand of crazy, not the cool Dennis Hopper kind. The crust are just downright repugnant, particularly the sicilian style slices which have the consistency of fried dough that got left under the couch and discovered five months later. The toppings, however, do offer a shot at redemption. Bacon and potato, or buffalo chicken are some intriguing options, and are quite tasty even if they have the consistency of a teething ring. I'd say walk the extra block and get a slice at Pinnochio's. The flavors may be more traditional, but the pizza itself is just head and shoulders above this stuff.

    (2)
  • A H.

My rating pretty much gives it to you plain -- they're just average. They don't win on price. They don't win on taste. They don't win on location, or atmosphere, or service. Price was ok, probably wouldn't have gone if I didn't have Groupon. 5 slices (not even 3/4 of a pizza) for over $20? Yewch! Would I go back? Depends...would they do another Groupon?

    (3)
  • Andrew M.

Bacon and potato pizza really sits heavy in your stomach...I think Crazy Dough's deserves at least some recognition for producing tasty pizza that isn't generic or a carbon copy of similar nearby options.

    (4)
  • Francesca R.

Three-stars for being able to get a slice and a beer for under $5. The pizza isn't fantastic - while the toppings and sauces are pretty good, the the dough itself is "crazy" greasy and the oil tends to congeal and turn into a crispy, artery-blocking biscuit after being re-heated. Still - a good place to get your cheap drunk on with $4 PBR pitchers.

    (3)
  • Jasmine C.

Yummy slices serve fresh and pipping hot! Crazy dough is my new favorite place for either a late night snack or a slice for lunch. The slices are HUGE and so I recommend only one unless you are very hungry. Great for take out but there's enough room for you to enjoy it while it's hot. They also have great daily deals for 2 slices and a drink for around $6 I think. Good stuff

  • Alli C.

We ordered delivery from Crazy Dough's tonight. It literally took an hour for the pizza to arrive, and when it did - it was cold. When trying to reach the restaurant after the hour wait, we could only reach a call center. The pizza itself tasted good, but it was disappointing to receive a cold pizza after the wait.

    (2)
  • Rob P.

We have liked Crazy Dough in the past but the last two times were dry and mostly dough. Also their individual slice choices seem to be less inspired than their menu now. The Buffalo Chicken pizza was once really tasty but now it just seems like BBQ chicken and Ranch dressing. Try Upper Crust instead.

  • rishi h.

The pizza here is good. If you're in the mood for something just a little more inventive than your standard fare, than eating here is not such a bad idea. I had the goat cheese pizza last time and it hit the spot.. I was hoping to try one of the other crazy topping ones but the majority of them didn't seem vegeterian friendly.

  • Anon P.

"Best Pizza in America"?? Are you kidding me? They forgot they were warming my pizza and handed me a burnt one that was hard as a rock. I asked them for another one, and it turns out it didn't taste much better. I would give them 2 stars, except they are claiming to be best in America, which is was sucked me in. What a load of BS.
