This is where my boyfriend and I went on our first "real" date. We go here again for real good meals. Each time that we are here we feel that the staff really appreciates that we choose their restaurant. The food is great, and the wine selection is very good! I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a great place in the North End. Depending on which waitress you get, your experience may differ, but overall a great place!

The manager welcomed us in from the street. In an area of many great, authentic Italian restaurants, this made Riccardo's stand out. You can tell that this is a family run establishment, and staff seem to take pride in the restaurant. The ambiance is that of a family run restaurant. Very traditional, nothing too trendy, white table cloths, lit candles, photos of family on the wall. Very homey feeling. For a busy Saturday night, we barely beat the rush and were seated immediately. Our server did very well for serving many tables. I imagine the service would be even better on a slower night. The portions were adequate, some plates could easily be shared. For the location and quality of the ingredients, I would say the prices are right on. Finally, THE FOOD. Authentic, freshly prepared pasta. Many imported meats and cheeses. We started with the bread which was tasty with a good crispy crust. The olive oil was a little bland, but that's a petty complaint. I had the Rollatini Di Melanzane (eggplant rolled and stuffed with ricotta, Romano and mozzarella cheese topped with fresh marinara) for my meal, and for $10, it was just right. The sauce on my eggplant was delicious and I wiped my plate clean with bread when no one was looking. My dad said the Brushetta Con Funghi Salvaggi ($9) was the best he had ever had. My mom also really enjoyed her chicken parmesean ($19) which was large enough to share. My sister's Penne con Pollo e Broccoli ($19) didn't really stand out, but in their defense, she did order a pretty bland option. I would return again if ever in the Boston area, as I also had my eye on a few other items on the menu.

We where a party of 8, none of us had a very good meal. The host at the door entry was kind of rude. The waitress tried to switch the bottle of wine to another brand and was telling us it was the same thing just different. Chianti is not the same as a Rosa. Very expensive drinks, $46 a bottle for a $9 bottle wine. Food took forever!!!! Not cooked properly, chicken parm tasted like the kind at Burger King. Veal dish was unevenly cooked, rare and we'll done at the same time. Other people at other tables where irritated with the food and service as well. We are one and done at Ricardo's. Bummer meal in the North End.

This place is amazing!!!! The owner is engaging and focuses on great service, Nicole our server was just amazing and cute (lol) - she made the experience. She made a recommendation on what I ordered and it was great - see the picture.

Great Italian place off the main street in the North End. Everything was fresh and the flavor was very authentic. The eggplant rollatini was my favorite thing on the menu. The dish tasted home made. Their tomato sauce is wonderful. Just how I like it- flavorful and clean tasting. Not masked with anything else but fresh tomatoes. We also had the fried calamari which was fantastic. Not chewy, nice portion, and great marinara to accompany the calamari. Service was good and no other complaints! Would def come back when I am in Boston.

Literally, the very first impression was been "greeted" by the ...owner....host...? Either way, felt like we were a burden and he could hardly be bothered on this busy night. From there it did not get any better -- up to and including a 2 hour wait for food and a shady episode involving serving a bottle of wine we didn't order only to be told "it's the same". Food was average. Too many other great places.

Mediocre food and bad service. There r too many good places to eat in the north end to stop here. Be sure to skip it. We were in on Saturday September 5th at 730. While we were a little late for our reservation (maybe by 8 minutes) due to the increased traffic for the fireworks, we did not get served our food until after the fireworks were over sometime after 930.

Welcoming atmosphere, the service was great. We waited for a table by the window and it was worth it, nice view of the street. My husband and daughter shared the stuffed meatballs and said they were delicious. My son and I shared grilled portobellos with sundried tomatoes and olives--it sounded like an amazing combination but was a little flat, not sure why. Everyone enjoyed their entrées, portions were generous. My lobster ravioli came topped with shrimps and I thought there could have been a couple of more. My son finished every bite of the veal gnocchi. My husband and daughter split the chicken Parmesan between them--there was plenty for both of them. The chicken was prepared perfectly and the red sauce complimented it well. Prices were reasonable for the area, my only complaint would be the mark-up on wine. We are accustomed to paying twice the retail price but our $13 bottle of wine was marked up to $34, perhaps this is common in this area, but we were surprised.

Went here for Mobfellas Mystery Theatre. Had a great time. Food was good. The eggplant rollatini was delicious. Best ricotta cheese I've tasted.

This is my third time eating at Riccardo's. I don't live in Boston but manage to eat here every time I am in the city. We love the food! I have had the Chicken Parmesan and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have never been there when it wasn't busy, but they are still very attentive and timely. Love this place - don't miss it!

We had a private party upstairs for about 50 people. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the food was great! I would definitely go back to eat at the restaurant to check out the full menu.

Another great North End restaurant! Two coworkers and I stopped by after an all day business meeting and had a great experience. The restaurant was pretty quiet, so we received incredible service. Our cocktails were well mixed and the bartender sent over some limoncello shots at the end of our meal too. We split some salads and three different pastas, so we could try many different things. Everything was so delicious and we certainly did not walk away hungry.

Before viewing this restaurant on Yelp, my father and I decided to go here because it was one of the cheaper Italian spots in the North End. It sits right on the tip of the North End's bustling restaurant business. At first, we glanced by it and then walked around a little more. It was getting cold, so we chose this place. There were probably 3 different couples inside. Not busy at all, but by the time we got our meals, it filled up quickly. We got to sit by the window so we could both look outside. Our waiter was nice, but we didn't get his name, nor did he ask if our food was good. Just put the order in, refilled our glasses with water and that was about it. Honestly, I didn't mind it but I know in the restaurant business it's mandatory. So I'd give the service a 3. Once seated, I looked it up on Yelp and noticed that it was 3 stars. Uh oh. Usually, I don't go to 3 star restaurants. They're always a hit or miss. I forgot to mention when walking in, and while eating, the owner came around and asked us how everything was. He was talking with some customers and even sat down with an older couple. Seems like he's been in the business for a while and got to know many people. We ordered Riesling and Chardonnay and the Polipo alla Griglia con Finocchio (grillzed octopus with mixed greens with Balsamic glaze) as an appetizer. I've never had such fresh and large octopus before! So tender and juicy. The glaze was lacking a little flavor and we needed to put a little salt on the octopus. I'd give it 4 stars. For our entrees, we got the Fusilli con Gamberi (chopped Gulf shrimp in a cognac reduction tossed with homemade fusilli and parmigiano reggiano) and the Chicken di Parmeigiano (chicken parmesan) and both were very satisfying. I couldn't even finish the shrimp pasta dish! The sauce on the chicken parm was homemade and my father said it was very good. The shrimp dish was all homemade as well and you COULD tell! The pasta was thicker, tastier and chewier than boxed pastas. The sauce was delicious and the shrimp were so tender and fresh. I can't wait to eat the rest for lunch! All together, the place was pretty good for a 3 star. The service was ok, but the food was really good. It's more quiet and set away from the busier side of the North End. The owner was out and about and wanted to see how everyone's meals were. A very quaint spot in the North End and a little cheaper, too!

One: we went without a reservation on a Saturday night and it was PACKED, but there was a small empty table and we were seated right away. Two: even though we were seated right away, it took a couple mins for our waiter to even greet us/give us menus. Three: we waited 10+ minutes for the guy to even come back to see if we were ready to order (we were starving so that wasn't awesome) Four: a couple came in 15 minutes after us, yet they were attended to immediately, their order was taken, they were given a bread basket AND an appetizer before we even got bread! Five: we had to ask TWICE for them to bring us bread Six: bean/pasta appetizer dish was YUMMY Seven: wheat pasta and red sauce was YUMMY (not on the menu we just asked for it since my hubs is running the marathon and needed a simple dish) Eight: we asked for more bread and were ignored again TWICE, the 3rd time it was brought to us. In the end: go if you're not in a hurry, not hungry, and don't care about it being so busy that the waiter ignores you/forgets about you. Hey, the food is good, so maybe it's worth it to you. Next time we're going to Olive Garden haha :) Oh and $17 for wheat pasta and red sauce is CRAZY but we'll give it to 'em since the pasta was cooked to perfection and the sauce was just right (not too salty or garlicky)

We hosted our rehersal dinner here December 27th 2013-- a Friday evening. We had 75 people attend, so we had the entire bottom floor. (usually these take place upstairs but he allowed it to be flipped as my father is handicapped) We met with him in person once beforehand to discuss the menu and try a few things, we had been here before and LOVED the food and the family atmosphere. He couldn't have been more halpful and attentive--- the days leading up to our event he allowed us to make a few changes and add 10 more people. The food was amazing, served family style and we had way more than enough as the plates just kept coming--- we had very attentive servers as well and everyone was more than pleased!!! I can not wait to come back to Riccardo's, we really and honestly felt like family! ps: I am not sure where these other reviewers went to eat--- because we sure wouldnt have international and out of town guests at anywhere less than stellar! Thanks again for an amazing night before our wedding!

Eight adults, three teenagers on a busy Saturday night with one of us in a scooter. We potentially the table from hell especially because we were running late. Luckily our reservation wasn't until 8 and they were able to hold the table for us. Service was very good, I enjoyed the atmosphere as it was bustling and fairly loud. Not a spot for quiet dining with soft conversation at least when we were there. Food was pretty good. American/Italian menu with the the usual items such as picatta, ravioli, gnocchi, calamari, rolled eggplant with ricotta and marinara. I especially enjoyed my haddock. The wine list is very weak if you are an enthusiast. They had no prosecco in 750ml bottles and the Italian wines were standard fare. But overall, it was great for this family gathering and especially convenient as we were staying at a nearby hotel.

Unfortunately, I am now a poor college student, so anything above $10 seems expensive to me. However, my friends and I were tired of walking around and we finally decided to eat at Riccardo's. The staff is friendly and attentive (especially with refilling water). Unfortunately they weren't able to split the check for my group. I ordered the lasagna, which was $17, a little on the pricey side (in my opinion). Even so, it was a good size for me since I typically don't eat very much. The pasta, meat, and cheese all tasted good together (although it might have been a little heavy on the cheese). On the whole, the decent food and nice ambiance deserve this place three stars.

The veal was very chewy. Meat balls were good. The hostess Ricardo was not very friendly. But we were able to make reservation through open table on a saturday evening when everything else was packed.

Great food at very reasonable price. We enjoyed the atmosphere and spending time at the bar with the owner prior to sitting at our perfect window seat. Arriving without a reservation we we're not at all concerned with the extra time it took to get a table. The owner (My wife and I didn't catch his name but really wish we did) went out of his way to assure a great experience. We will be back with our next visit!

We had the Ricardo's soup, camellii soup, spaghetti with shrimp and scallops and gnocchi with veal. Oh - and a limoncello martini. The food was really good. The martini was great. The wait wasn't too long for a Saturday night. All good, right? Well, the service was disappointing. We did not get the parm cheese requested or refills of water. She also literally walked away from the table twice when asked for the bill and to check out. I wound have given it a 2.5. 3 was generous.

we were visiting Boston last year in November, so its a late review...but, we loved this place, it was a week night and packed but the owner/manager? not sure which one seated us right away and our server a really nice girl, took our orders promptly advised us on what she would order and gave great suggestions, we had a wonderful table, right by the window and it was the perfect last night in Boston. We live in Hawaii so authentic Italian food is hard to find, food here was so tasty and affordable. Plus who wouldn't love being greeted by the owner/manager by "just the two of yous guys" we loved it, the total package!!

Went with a party of 8, it was one of a few places that could take the reservation on same day. Place has the decor of a cheap hotel from 1978. Sat upstairs, which was full and had one server for the whole floor. After getting us the first round and taking our order, didn't see her once until right before the food came....which took at least an hour. Food was just ok for the North End. And I say that because other people at our table thought theirs was very good. I had the chicken parm, which came in a big portion, had decent sauce, but the chicken was on the soggy side. My girlfriend's bolognese tasted like something you'd get at a chain. No reason to come back to this place.

We were in Boston for a week and we just happened to eat at Riccardo's Ristorante our first day. It was so good that we went back three more times! The eggplant parmagana was amazing, as well as the calamari and stuffed meatballs. The serving sizes were huge and we ended up sharing our entree every time. The prices were also very reasonable for the serving sizes. I can't wait to visit Boston again and eat at Riccardo's!

Riccardo's might be my new go-to spot for dinner in the North End. Discovered via OpenTable while looking for a last minute Saturday night reservation, this restaurant definitely exceeded my expectations. Bigger than your typical Salem or Hanover joint and a large enough bar to enjoy a beer/wine/cocktail while your table is prepared. The service was wonderful! All staff were friendly and attentive. The menu is diverse, with many of your Italian classics, including the appetizer (fried mozzarella) and two entrees (chicken parmigiana and seafood fra diavlo) we ordered and thoroughly enjoyed. The app was heavy on the mozz - too much for me - but the man loved it. But that marinara sauce! Seemingly simple to master, but not always the case, I find it a good indicator of quality Italian food. Riccardo's has it down! Also, solid (read: large) portions and wine selection. Can't wait to return and sample some of the other dishes (and that limoncello martini I saw only after I ordered a glass of wine) that this place has to offer - I doubt I'll be disappointed!

Nice old town atmosphere. Almost feels like back in "old country" from our vast window view. The Stuffed Veal special was very tasty and tender. We also ordered the Riccrardo's Chicken Mushroom risotto which was delicious as well.

I went to Riccardo's last Thursday evening with some coworkers, on a recommendation from one of my friends. We got there just before 6pm, and were warmly greeted by the owner and waitstaff. Unlike some North End restaurants, Riccardo's is a bit more spacious and relaxing. We sat at a corner table, next to the windows, and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We split three appetizers: Meatballs Stuffed with Ricotta, Antipasto, and Caprese salad. They were all fresh, flavorful, and the presentation was impressive. The meatballs were to die for, and the red sauce was very tasty. The dinners were equally delicious, and the portions were generous. A few standouts were Risotto a la Riccardo (I'll be ordering this next time!), Pollo Piccata (which I asked to have served over their housemate fusilli), and Orecchiette, Broccoli Rabe, and Sausage. (I enjoyed my leftover piccata today at home, which prompted me to write this review.) We were too full to sample their desserts, but topped the evening off with cappuccino and a delicious chocolate wine. We were extremely pleased with the food and service. From start to finish, our evening was wonderful. The owner, Richie, and waiter, Mike, made us feel like family. We all agreed that we'd be going back soon.

I wasn't very impressed with this place. Some friends and I went (4 total) with a reservation and we chose to sit upstairs after being giving the option of a 5 top on the main level or a 4 top upstairs. It was an awkward room, definitely a converted banquet space and the rest of the tables were much larger. Our waiter was nice enough but we didn't see much of him. Even though we ordered before a large 8 person table next to us was fully seated they received their food way before us and we ended up waiting about 45 minutes for our food. Thank god we ordered some wine! My eggplant parmesan was ok .Tthe penne pasta with red sauce it came with was getting cold on the edges by the time I got it. The eggplant was good but not great. A friend that is a waitress in Boston was equally unimpressed. I'd save your money and go somewhere else, the North End has a ton of options.

Disorganized, overpriced, horrendous service. Notice the few reviews this place has compared to other restaurants in the area? Very big indicator this place blows. We had to wait over 15 minutes for our server because no one there knew who had our table. When she arrived, she was smacking gum and couldn't care less about offering us any service. Our food took over 1 hour to come out and it didn't even come out at the same time. Looking around the place, we noticed the tables around us had the same dysfunctional issues going on, everyone complaining. One table got their appetizer after their entrees. Another table were served the bread, after the manager noticed, an hour into their stay they hadn't received it. Another table had to wait 30+ minutes for their 2nd entree to come out, leaving them to share the 1st entree so they didn't die of starvation. We tried complaining about how long the food took, the manager said that it was normal, there was nothing they could do about it. Our drink order never came, when we asked a busser for our drinks, she said she couldn't help us. Our waitress disappeared on us for a solid 45 min, when we asked the manager about the lack of service, he said she wasn't doing well that night and sent us over a new server. WTF. The entire wait staff was so busy putting out fires, no one knew how to provide decent customer service, it was embarrassing to watch this place fall apart in one sitting. Lastly, they screwed up my order, but realizing the it would take a day and a half to fix it, I gave up and ended up paying $23 for a bowl of cheap spaghetti with tomato sauce, which the server described as "pasta with some sauce." Avoiding this place will be the best decision you make today.

My husband and I went to Riccardo's this past Saturday night Awesome!! My server was great and the food just delicious! It was very crowed and the owner was able to get a sit in a very short time at a great table. He's wonderful! Riccardo's gets an A for Food and an A for overall service!!

Went in last night during the storm and glad we did. The service was great although there were only a few diners. I had the shirmp gambari and the bf got the linguine vognole, he finished every last drop of his and I would've had I not filled up on the delicious bread. I would go ahead and give 4 stars other than the music was a bit loud, the lights were a bit bright and since we were seated at the windows there was a draft behind me. Food was good though... 3 stars all around.

  • Emily J.

The food here was great, but the service was sub-par. Our waitress would disappear for long periods of time without checking if we needed refills on drinks or had questions. She appeared right when our food came before we even had a chance to take a bite to see how it was, but then never came back to check on us throughout the rest of the meal. It also seemed as though we waited a very long time for our food. I am not one to mind waiting, but it seemed longer than what restaurants usually take. However, someone else came by a few times...not sure if it was the owner or someone related, but not a waiter...to ask how we were and he was extremely friendly! I wish the other servers could be more like him!

Arrived Friday 5:15 we were greeted right away and seated. The waiter approached us right away to take our drink order, give us bread and to let us know what the specials were. He treated us like loyalty. The food was awesome as well as the customer service. They know Italian, and being an Italian family we know!! We will definitely be back! Maybe next time we won't be so full and will have dessert!

Been to Riccardo's 4 times in the past year and it has become our go-to place! Love the location, the food and the layout. Summer is especially nice at Riccardo's as they have the flip out windows across the front of the restaurant. The food is consistently excellent and if you get there early it's usually not crowded. I also like the fact that it is away from the crazy tourist trap that is Hanover Street, but is a short walk away for after dinner people watching. I sent my 21 year old son there with his steady girl friend. He wanted to impress her with a nice North End meal and experience. He came back very happy - it's tough to please a 21 year old and a 53 year old (me - lol). I highly recommend Riccardo's for a nice relaxing truly Italian experience.

Stopped by Riccardo's for a late afternoon bite with my mother and would definitely go back. We had the Gnocchi which was perfectly made plus great service from our very friendly waiter! Excellent food! Luckily we walked in and were seated immediately. We were looking for a quick bite before a concert at the TD garden. We were impressed by the quality and also the quickness. Eggplant app was excellent. the octopus app was good. Chick parm was a hearty portion with excellent sauce. Would go back.

I'm new to the area, from Chicago and moved to Boston to facilitate opening a new national franchise restaurant. I was taking out a friend from home who enjoys the North End. After walking up and down the Main Street, we stumbled upon this restaurant and decided to take a seat. We sat down and were debating ordering a bottle as we were going to spend most of our night there and enjoy our experience. Good thing we didn't. We were a group of two and were sitting next to a family with small children, a couple to our left, and a big group to our right full of people our age (26-27). As we ordered our wine we were noticing a small feud happening near the bar area between staff members. The man was using heavy profanity. The family with small children in front of us proceeded to get the check and leave abruptly as their children were too young to hear these words. We sat through an hour and a half meal until we asked for our check and couldn't take anymore. We asked for our check to another waitress as our waitress was spending her time involved with the family feud. She wouldn't even take the time to serve our table. When we told them we wanted to leave she brought the check. The host, an older gentlemen, came over to ask how everything was. The food was great, the experience was awful. He proceeded to say it was a family feud, and did not offer any sort of explanation. I simply replied with that this language was unacceptable and that it should have been eliminated almost immediately. He then asked if we had a reservation or not. We said no, out of every restaurant we chose this one. We were offered a dessert shot on behalf of the owner. He then went to the other table of 8 next to us and we overheard him comp some of their bill. Now, I'm not upset that the option wasn't presented to us. I'm upset that the experience we had was poor, that children were submitted to that behavior and that a visitor I had in town for the weekend has now a sour taste of the North End. Being heavily involved in customer service, customer retention and especially in food service, providing that overall great experience. That is definitely not what we received tonight. I will not pass on positive feedback on this restaurant. More or less quite the opposite.

Our favorite spot in Bostons North End. Absolutely amazing food, the best chicken parm dinner I've ever had. Can definitely get crazy on weekends but we love driving in on a Wednesday or Thursday evening for a nice date and some great dinner & drinks. Parking in the Fanueil Hall lot is only $3 with validated parking. Be prepared to wait up to an hour on busy weekends but the it's worth the wait.

I appreciate and respect everyone's opinion, our experiences are all very subjective of course. I do find one thing hilarious and that's when people use Giacomo's as a point of reference. There's only 1 reason why Giacomo's is busy and that's because they were on the Food Network, ask any local and they'll tell you it's just mediocre and certainly not fit for a King. Ricardo's has their good and better days just like all of us do and again it's a tough business to please everyone. I think the ambiance is inviting, up to date, the staff is very pleasant (if you're pleasant to them)?? Some of these reviews seem very snooty, I can only imagine how their staff is treated by some of their (you) customers. I like when the small town USA folks (who would typically consider ramen noodles and spaghetti o's gourmet) and all the sudden their "foodies". Thank for the reviews and diversity of thought, it makes me chuckle. No I don't own or work for Riccardo's, just a customer who appreciates people attempting to give their best night in night out. Some people just can't be pleased. Fire back........I'm all ears and smiles.....:)

I went to Riccardo's on a Thursday evening with a small group of friends and family. I used to live in Boston and was back to do some research at BU when my sister, her boyfriend, my parents, and my girlfriend were visiting. Also, one of my mom's former students happened to be in town so we needed a table for 8. I made a reservation through OpenTable because they had a positive review for another larger party. This turned out to be a GREAT decision. Despite the restaurant being empty, the staff was very inviting. We had some cocktails at the bar while we waited for everyone to arrive. Richie - I believe the owner's son - entertained us with conversation and the bartender (later to be our waitress) was also very nice. I wanted a dirty martini, but they couldn't make it because they don't have olive juice - instead they gave us some free olives to munch on while we waited. At dinner, we had a great time. We ordered the stuffed meatball appetizer special and were impressed. Four of us had a veal special - also amazing - and other traditional pasta dishes were also tasty. At the end of the night, Richie bought us a round of chocolate liquor. It was amazing and a great end to a great night. I highly highly recommend this place. Make friends with the people working there and you'll have an incredible evening!

Standard North End Italian done right. My weakness is always linguine with clams, and this was great. But with the advantage of not feeling as crowded inside as so many of the places here.

I keep trying to find a decent Italian restaurant in the NorthEnd, without having to wait for a table at Giacomo's, but this is not it. Shrimp Limoncello was decent, good sized shrimp and well prepared. But the Branzino was covered in tomato sauce and served with a steamed, tasteless head of broccoli. The mushroom risotto was a cross between Mac & Cheese and rice a roni. The waiter was great though.

I'm going to preface this with: I've been coming to the North End for years and know there are some pretty exceptional restaurants in the area, and had trusted this one to be one of them - the only thing preventing me from giving a 1-star review is the fact that the food was actually pretty good. A group of us went out for a friend's birthday and were able to get a 7PM reservation on a Saturday night, which definitely sold us on the place. Upon arrival, we were told to just go upstairs (mind you, no one is guiding us so we just kind of wandered aimlessly till we found seats). We waited 15 minutes just to be greeted and given water and another 15 minutes before someone took our order. - At around 8pm we still had no food, but chalked it up to the downstairs being really busy, despite the upstairs being moderately busy. A few of us ordered drinks, and the waitress ended up bringing a drink that none of us ordered but offered to us on the house (which we thought was a nice gesture) - 8:30pm rolls around and the waitress comes back and says the kitchen lost our ticket but our food was on the way, and she wanted to "double-check that they were making the correct food" so she took our order a SECOND time... - We didn't get our food till around 9:00PM. That's an unacceptable 1 1/2 hrs for a meal! Are you joking?! No apologies were given, just "here's your food" which again, was very tasty but not really worth the 90 minute wait. When we asked for the check, the waitress ended up charging us for the drink that was "on the house" AND hand-wrote in a mandatory 18% gratuity charge because it was group of six of us. I've worked in the restaurant business, AS A WAITRESS mind you, and effective Jan. 1st, 2014 in the state of Massachusetts, a fixed gratuity charge CANNOT be added to your bill so that patrons may be allowed to tip based on the SERVICE they received. We asked the waitress to split the bill 5 ways, and to take off the drink she charged us -- she brought back the 5 different receipts for us to sign and again HAND WROTE our tip and our total on our receipts. Maybe she thought she was doing us a courtesy, but that was unjustified and I'm sorry, she did not deserve that 18% tip. We started talking amongst ourselves about how displeased we were, so the waitress stood there and watched us sign our bills... STOOD AT THE TABLE AND WATCHED US like we were children. The overall service was despicable and disappointing. Do not go here unless you want to be screwed and have ample time to do so. There are plenty of amazingly delicious restaurants in the North End, with hospitable service that will make your experience worthwhile. I will NOT be returning to Riccardo's ever again, and will be advising everyone I know to do the same...

Honestly, it's been a few months since I was at this place, so I'm going to round up my rating instead of down just to give them a little benefit of the doubt. Also, because we were with a party of 8, had no reservation on a Saturday night, and they got us a table anyway which I appreciated. The food...I barely remember. If I recall anything it's that we all said it was in the good but not great range. The staff was okay, the decor was a bit predictable but allright. The only thing I do remember having a clear up or down opinion on was that my wife asked for a regular bowl of pasta with broccoli added to it, and they charged $8 for the broccoli. I remember that part because I just found an indignant note I wrote to myself about it from back in March. As I say, probably the thing you most need to know is that other than the nickel and dime-ing it made, effectively, no real impression on me. Which tells you about all you really need to know if you're looking for a memorable Italian food experience.

Like other reviews have said, do not go here. 8 pm reservation on Saturday, took 45 minutes to be seated. We did not get any food until 10pm. Other tables were getting up and leaving due to same issues. Wait staff checked on us once or twice during this time. We got a small bread basket for our group of 6, one tiny piece of bread each during this time, when we asked for more bread we were told they were out of bread. 5 minutes later, another server takes a larger basket of bread to another table. We ask her for more bread and then get it. When the food did come it just was not good. Nobody in our party was happy with their food. I had pork, and it was very dry and tough. There generally seemed to be a bit of an attitude from the staff with their customers. I think maybe if the restaurant focused on the execution of the food and service, delivering a quality product and experience they would have happier customers and be able to lose the attitude.

There are a number of restaurants with great food in the North End: this is not one of them. But the great food places often have hour-long waits for a table, so if you're simply hungry this place will do. Good location, comfortable interior, good service. No long wait for a table, and there's a reason! The food is old-school red sauce on everything pretty much. The branzino (sea bass) was just plain boring. Ditto for the fra diavolo seafood. Edible, but if you're a foodie you will be sorely disappointed. Very 'Olive Garden', fine for the tourists. We do not plan to return.

I upped my rating from one star to two, but only because my party of 10 arrived on Saturday night of Marathon weekend, and the place was JAMMED. So, while the service was extremely SLOW, I do understand the crowd was bigger than usual. We had booked our two tables on Open table so did have a reservation. The HOST, whom I also believe was the owner, was nothing short of RUDE. In addition, while our waiter was delightfully pleasant, we had to ask twice for another basket of bread (which never arrived) twice for our additional bottle of wine, and were not provided with enough menus and napkins for the adults in our party. The food was good - not great, not terrible. I thought the portions were generous, unlike previous reviews. The Chicken Parm was good sized, big enough to split. Back to the Host/owner. As mentioned, we were a party of 10, 5 adults and 5 children. He asked us twice, if we were ready to order, and the second time, when we told him we were getting ready, he pointed out that the table of children was a "waste of a table", and that all they were eating was bread!! We ended up spending $400 including tip. Insulting is an understatement. Clearly this guy needs a remedial lesson in Customer Service. With so many other choices in the North End, I would skip this place entirely.

This restaurant had the most disorganized service I have ever experienced in a restaurant ever. We were here for dinner on a Friday night, and the place was full. I can understand slow service when a restaurant is busy, and the staff was truly hustling the entire time we were there. It was very apparent that there was absolutely no organizational structure to the floor staff. It took forever to get menus once we were seated. Then it took forever for someone to take our orders. Once our order was taken, 2 other servers stopped at our table to see if anyone had taken our order. There was no bartender at the bar, and the waitstaff made the drinks. We ordered a carafe of the house sangria, and it was disgusting. It had the most bizarre, tinny taste. It tasted like really cheap merlot mixed with really bad canned orange juice. All 4 people at our table winced at the taste of it. We couldn't drink it, and it was $30. Not happy about that. My husband tried to order a glass of scotch, but was told that the bar only had limited alcohols (vodka, rum, etc...). The food was actually very delicious, but I found it very strange that for an Italian restaurant, we couldn't get parmesan for our pasta dishes. And the portions were too small for the price. The maître d' stopped by our table once to see how things were, and that was it. We had to flag down staff to get more water and bread. And we wanted our check, we had to flag down the waiter, then it was a 30 minute wait from there to actually get the check. I can't tell you if they carry desserts. No one ever offered them, I didn't see any coming out of the kitchen, and there were no dessert menus that we could see. Like I said, I don't fault the floor staff for the horrible service. They ran their tails off. The place just simply had no organizational structure. It's sad because the food really isn't bad. Pricey for the portions, but not bad.

You have a choice when going to the North End and this should be that choice. While its tough to get a bad meal in the North End I always am looking for that something extra above and beyond. From the moment you walk in you are treated like family and made to feel comfortable. I had a reservation and was told they were a few minutes behind so was offered a seat at the bar. This was one of the last summer weekends so i ordered a mango mojito. Once I took a sip I knew I was going to be in for a good evening. Very fresh forward favors from the mixed drinks and impressive wines by the glass options as well. Dinner I was blown away by the modern take on the classics and clean execution of the dishes. I was in a party of 3 so we all ordered different dishes and loved them. I went with the classic Veal Parmigiana with a side of Fettuccine Alfredo. The veal was buttery and fork tender. The sauce was a bright red tomato sauce with hints of sweet basil that provided a clean finish. My table mates had Gnocchi and Gnocchi with veal medallions and were also blown away. Make sure to get the extra cheese sprinkle table side and of course the fresh ground pepper. Desert we went overboard and ordered all of them for the table. I loved the homemade chocolate mousse and also the Lemon Granita. The owners son Richie was great and went above and beyond as did all of his staff to insure we had the best possible time and meal. For a perfect finish we had a chocolate shot that was blended dutch chocolate with red wine. I do not have words to describe how good this was. I used Open Table to book my reservation and have to say that made things very easy from a one click reservation to getting confirmation back right away along with helpful information. I can't wait to go back and try other things on the menu.

Enjoyed a late lunch at Riccardos with a coupon. The prices were OK, definately not rip off. I would have enjoyed a fresh lemonade, mine tasted powdered. My pork was a little overdone but the sauce was deliciouse. Pasta Fagioli looked very thick so I did not try it, but the portion was good size. The decor was very standard but clean. Our waiter was A+. All in all, it was a positive experience but you can do better in the North End

Stopped in here on New Year's Eve with the lady to get a nice dinner. We were promptly seated by a well dressed, serious looking man (the owner?) and had a great dining experience. The service was attentive but not overbearing and the decor was typical North End Italian chic but not tacky. The food was the most memorable part of the meal. I had veal wrapped in proscuito with mushrooms and alfredo rigatoni. Awesome! Why do baby animals taste so much better than big animals? My lady had the lobster ravioli and it was equally awesome. Previous reviewers of Riccardo's have complained about the food but I found it to be above average italian. My only minor complaint is that they don't have any tasty brews on tap but I'm a beer snob and most people don't really care about what's on tap or in the bottle. Riccardo's was semi-affordable and I would recommend this place to anyone looking to experience North End dining.

The one star is for the waiter who was so contrite that I didn't like the food, who offered us a limoncello on the house. I would not go back to Ricardo's. In a restaurant that charges prices of this level, I expect attentive but professional service and exceptional food. I was disappointed on both accounts. First, the service was FAR too fast. This restaurant is decorated and priced to be the kind of place that you spend a couple of hours at to talk with your dining partners, leisurely enjoy the food, and then wend your way out of again. Instead, much like a diner at lunch rush, the entree came out less than five minutes after the salad, which gave us no time to finish the (overly-bland-creamy) salad. The waiters bussed the tables with that same fast-food-restaurant sloppiness of water-pouring and putting down food. Finally, when I asked what wine would go well with my meal, the waiter seemed totally perplexed by the question and suggested a random chianti "because they never fail," rather than based on any pairing with the meal. Second, the food is utterly generic. My dining partner said about his $17 lasagna that he'd had "better food from the frozen section at Whole Foods." My experience with the gnocci and salad was much the same. Finally, the food is just slopped onto plates: no presentation whatsoever. All in all, a completely unsatisfying experience.

A group of us went here for an early dinner on a Sunday evening a couple of weeks ago. We were celebrating an anniversary and were hoping for an outstanding meal - about half of our party received just that, the other half were sorely disappointed. It is a nice, fairly casual restaurant - and the fact that it is not ON Hanover held a lot of appeal. When making the reservations the hostess was wonderful. She also recommended a bakery (Modern Pastry - SCRUMPTIOUS!!) and even had someone from the restaurant pick it up that afternoon for us. They made sure the flowers we ordered were at the table and everything was perfect. Our waitress was competent, though not especially friendly. She took our drink orders and listed the specials right away. All of the drinks arrived without issue. We ordered several appetizers - the stuffed meatballs were delicious, others had both the fried and stuffed calamari and said it was good. Not outstanding, but still good. Then we ordered our meals - the main courses are the reason this place is not getting a better review. 3 people in our party ordered the stuffed pork, 1 had the NY sirloin strip, 1 lobster ravioli, 1 linguine w/ clams, 1 Fradiavolo, 1 Salmon, 1 Chicken and broccoli. The NY Strip was ordered medium - it came out VERY well done. To the point it was sent back. The replacement steak was edible, however that member of our group then ate later than the other 8 of us. The pork was all overcooked. It smelled fabulous and the sauce was good, but the actual pork was tough and dry. The chicken was OK, a bit dry but the sauce made up for it. The fish was done just right and the Fradiavolo was quite good and would be ordered again. The Linguine was good and the clams served with it were delectable. The absolute best meal of the night was the lobster stuffed ravioli - it was ordered without the shrimp (our daughter likes lobster but not shrimp). I tried a bite and the sauce was probably one of the best sauces I have ever tasted in my life - absolute perfection!! Since this was our first trip, I don't know if there was a new cook on the grill that did not know how to properly cook meats or if this is standard for them. If I were to go back I would stick with the pasta dishes. They do pasta exceptionally well, but need to work on the other items offered on the menu. All in all, I would give this place another shot in hopes that the chef was having an off night. At the very least I would order the lobster raviolis just to have that sauce again!

I do want to preface this by I have worked at, I currently work at, and are managing an authentic Italian restaurant. I understand the restaurant business very well and have both high expectations but also a very high amount of understanding the business. We went to this place on a completely random OpenTable suggestion for 1,000 points for a reservation (reward points + hangry = any kind of food is awesome.) My boyfriend and I are incredibly indecisive on where to eat, but we are always open to anything. We went on a Wednesday night and it was the first freezing night in the city and the restaurant was very empty at 6:30. We had our choice of table and was greeted promptly by everyone that worked there. We had a great warm table by the window and the service was prompt as soon as we sat down. The wine list was perfect as it covered everyone's tastes but the real delight was the food. We had the house meat and cheese appetizer and it was delicious. I had the seafood risotto for dinner (unbelievably delicious) and my boyfriend had the roast pork loin, which he said was excellent (he finished it in seconds I swear, hah!). We couldn't even think about dessert afterwards, so much food! I will say though, the music was cheesy and Godfather-esque (they literally played the theme while we were there). But if you're looking for not disgustingly overpriced great Italian food (like a lot of the North End) this is a pretty great spot.

I had dinner at Riccardo's this past week and the food was out of this world! The restaurant wasn't very busy, but we did get there rather late on Thursday night. The restaurant is located right across from Paul Revere's old house on the Freedom Trail. The food at Riccardo's is all delicious. Our group had 6 people, and we all enjoyed different things on the menu. All of them were equally delicious. The wine menu at Riccardo's is also very extensive. Service was great. I'll be back!

I enjoyed one of their seafood specialties, and it was really good, but my wife was a bit dispointed with her chicken and the side order of pasta. Food service was a bit slow, but if we asked, they jumped on it right away. I would have appreciated some balsamic vinegar on the table to go with olive oil.

I guess John L went on a bad night. My family has dined here twice over the last year and enjoyed it both times. Food and service has been top notch. Good location, just a block off the main drag in the North End so there isn't as much traffic. I recommend Ricardo's.

We went there on Wednesday night. It wasn't crowded at all. So service was great. My wife loved the lobster ravioli and I had the lamb chops. They were both delicious. We also had a restaurant.com coupon. The only thing that I didn't like was the chianti.

I really like this place. The GF and I decided to take a summer stroll around Downtown and the North End and "just find some place." Obviously, Hanover St was a madhouse...so this is where we ended up. It's a nice, pleasant, classy little joint with a sign on the front door that says, "Casual Attire Welcome." So everybody is welcome here, and it's the kind of place where you can class it up and dress real nice, or just walk in with a t-shirt...and NOBODY looks out of place. We started with one of the specials: stuffed meatballs appetizer (I wanted the stuffed calamari, but the GF nixed that idea). I've noticed several reviews referring to the stuffed meatballs, so it seems they feature this "special" frequently. Maybe every day...and that's fine with me, because it was AWESOME. The meatball was deliciously seasoned with just the right amount of cheese. As I finished mine, I noticed it was very salty and I was getting thirsty...but I think it was actually the marinara it was served with, not the meatball itself. It's an impressive but not overwhelming menu. I was leaning toward the sea bass, but at the last minute decided to get an old standby: veal parm. I'm glad I did, it was almost as good as the meatball! The pasta it was served with was just a tad too al dente for my taste...I'd go so far as to say it was underdone by about a minute. But then again, I'm not Italian. My GF had the chicken/broccoli/penne. I didn't try it, but she said it was delicious...although she also found the pasta to be slightly underdone. Pretty good service. Everybody is kind and friendly. During our meal, our server was very attentive without being pushy. When we were done, it took a little longer than I expected for our plates to be cleared, but I can live with that. Good selection of wines (my GF doesn't drink wine so I really only looked at the "by the glass" options). I'm not an oenologist, but I liked the selection and they have good options for different price ranges. We skipped dessert because we had already decided we wanted to go to a place that specializes in gelato. I would definitely come back!

You can see North Square from Ricardo's front window, but the restaurant is a little bit removed from the touristy North End. We went to redeem a restaurant.com coupon, but I'd gladly have paid full price for the experience we had there. We had meatballs stuffed with ricotta, a special, to start. They were tender, evenly cooked, and the the sauce and cheese were delectable. For entrees, my wife had shrimp diavolo and I had gnocchi with veal and sundried tomatoes. We were both delighted with the food, and neither of us could finish our portions. The estimable Julie from Revere poured for us at the bar and then continued as our server. She was as pleasant, attentive, and helpful as one could have wished. I'm sure that, a quarter mile away, dozens of people were lined up in the wind and bitter cold to get into Giacomo's. Ah, well...

Do not go here. Trust me. I used to live in the North End and have been to almost every restaurant there. Fortunately, I managed to escape this one, until last night. I don't know about the others who said they had a bitchy waitress, but that was not the case for us. The only good thing about the expereince was our pleasant waitress. Well, the atmosphere was nice too. We started with an antipasti for the table and it was a joke. It was insanely overpriced for 4 mini slices of salami, 2 thin sticks of hard cheese, a few sardines (maybe?) and very few flavorless mushrooms and peppers. I have had my share of anitpasti and this was the worst and the smallest order I've ever seen. The bread basket was pretty bland as well. I had seafood risotto and when I ordered it the waitress said "good choice" so I was really looking forward to it. it was not good. At all. The flavor was bland, the risotto was not creamy, the mussels were mushy and the calamari was rubbery. It was also missing the baby clams that the menu listed as part of the dish. The only good thing about the dish was the shrimp and sadly, it only came with 2. After eating the shrimp, I sort of just pushed my food around on my plate and filled up on bread. I had a bite of my husband's gnocci dish and it was terrible too. And, for the North End, his portion seems incredibly small. The portion sizes were extremely inconsistent because my mother's chicken parmesan and my father's steak were both enormous. And actually, the chicken parm wasn't bad. My mother asked to sub angel hair for the penne (that accompanies the chicken parm). They actually had angel-hair listed as one of their side dishes anyway, so it was obviously readily available and we figured it would be an easy switch. Can you believe they charged extra for subbing the angel hair? It was just bad food. The place is a fake. It looks nice and the people are nice and then, wham! Talk about Bait & Switch. And it's overpriced for the quality. There are so many better places in the North End and it is no surprise why this one is almost always empty.

Rushed waiters. Long wait for food. Managers watching over everyone like a hawk. Food quality was o-k. --- That's a quick summary for you. We went here last Saturday night. I originally wanted to go to my regular place, Assagio, but the wait was an hour and we had tickets to a show, so we walked over here for no apparent reason. It was busy but had open tables. It's nice enough inside - but the purple lights under the bar totally cheapen the place. They have nice white christmas lights up and nice etched windows here and there and it all looks nice but get rid of the purple lights - it makes it look like a dive bar! --- We were seated quickly by what we assumed was the manager. He checked on us during our meal and did that with everyone - putting a hand on their back while doing so (which drives me nuts). You could tell he was eager to please, which is nice to see, but we felt like we were being watched all night. Not only by him, but by this enormous man sitting at the bar seated at an awkward angle. We pegged him as the owner, and we were right: he too was watching over everyone all night. It's nice to go out to dinner, but it's not nice when the management is acting like vultures constantly staring over the crowd. It was a bit much. The super-big guy said "thanks" to us as we left, so I'm pretty sure he was an owner. --- Our waiter could not speak any faster. Wow, he was harried. He told us the specials and I chose the stuffed meatballs. We got a bottle of wine and he eventually brought it back, sat it on the table and said "I'll-be-back-to-open-that-in-a-minute". OK. I guess we'll stare at the bottle for a while. When he did open it, before I could take a sip, he said "isitgooddoyoulikeit??" How about I actually taste it before you ask that? He was in a hurry. I said it was fine and we drank the bottle. It was decent wine so we were happy there. --- The stuffed meatballs weren't really "stuffed", they just had a dollop of cheese squished on top. They weren't BAD - I actually quite liked them with my wine. I do recommend getting an appetizer because the bread they serve is pretty sad: it's just sliced white bread. Plain oil on your table. Also, our food took a long time - so I'm glad we had something to eat because we were starving. We weren't in a rush, so it didn't matter too much that the dinner was slow. But still. --- For dinner: I am trying to load their menu online but it's not working. Anyhow - I had a gnocchi dish - it was OK. I was happy enough with it. I wasn't blown away, but it wasn't bad. My guest had the third pasta dish on the menu: pasta shells with broccoli rabe and sausage. That was below average. The pasta was undercooked - and I don't mean al-dente, it was definitely undercooked. We had waited long enough for dinner, I didn't want to complain or make a scene. We didn't think that dish was amazing either but it was OK. You could tell the kitchen had probably forgotten her dish and made it while mine sat under lamps and they just rushed the pasta along and it came out underdone. --- We weren't offered desert or coffee, just given the check with a quick goodbye. We kind of laughed at that, because we defintiely would have gotten desert or coffee (because we like desert and coffee!) but so be it. The manager and owner said bye on our way out. -- I would not recommend going here, because there are other places in the North End that a GREAT and this place is exceptionally average. If you don't have the hour to wait at the places you see with a line outside (which is a good sign), going here is passable, but don't expect greatness.

I went here last night with my girlfriend for a night out for some North End Italian food. It was a last minute decision so we had no reservations. We walked by some of our favorites, Antico Forno and Al Dente, only to find a very long wait time. Riccardo's was busy but we were seated right away. It was instantly noticeable that the inside of the restaurant does not meet the expectations of what a North End Italian restaurant should be. It was very modern and looked more like a chain restaurant than family owned. We were going to be seated by a window in what looked like a high traffic area until I asked to be seated at a table against the wall, hoping to avoid servers walking by all night. In the end it didn't really matter where we sat because there was a sickeningly sweet smell of scented chemicals wafting from the nearby bathrooms that seemed to overpower the whole place. The food was just as abysmal. We were served white sliced bread, not even warm, that we didn't even touch. I ordered the rack of lamb over risotto (an ambitious choice in hindsight) and my gf, not being thrilled with any of the entrées, opted to go with two appetizers: caprese salad and eggplant parmesan. The lamb was chewy and moderately flavorful, and the supposed risotto was more like creamy white rice. The caprese had unripe tomatoes that were devoid of flavor, and the balsamic dressing drizzled on the side was not nearly enough to mask the average taste. The eggplant parmesan was cold and boring. Overall I was very disappointed and could not wait to leave. I would not recommend that anyone come here.

Excellent food and service, nice bar, crowded but too loud. Manager in charge was very keen to be sure everything was right for the customers. The bartender, Ann, accommodated our vegan diet, not an easy feat! We will be back!

I was in Boston for work and we wanted to eat at a good italian restaurant in the North End. It was suggested we try Riccardo's. It was fantastic! The food was delicious and the portions were nice and large. :-) We started with the stuffed zuccini blossoms which were to die for! And we also enjoyed a caprese salad. Soo good! Several of us at the table enjoyed the special which was veal stuffed with proccuito and cheese. It was so delicious! The service was great, atmosphere was wonderful, and I will definitely be back!

Some friends and I decided to have dinner in the North End tonight and enjoy the gorgeous weather in Boston. I chose Riccardo's because of the 1,000 point Open Table bonus. Also, a friend just moved into the neighborhood so we knew we wanted to stay in the North End. Here's the gist: -Wines by the glass selection was OK, not great. The Italian reds are priced high by the glass ($12) and those are the best choices. -We shared 2 appetizers, fried calamari & bruschetta alla funghi. Both were a disappointment. I don't think I've had such bad, dry, chewy calamari like that in a city that is known for seafood. It was really bad. Portions were OK, not big not small. -Our entrees were good. They actually did my favorite dish, linguine alla vongolle, well. I would consider going back for this dish. The portion was good for one person. I would have liked a few more clams. -We each had a dessert (cheesecake, lemon sorbet, cannoli) . I had the cheesecake with strawberries. The portion was small. -The service was good at first. However, after dinner they completely forgot about us. We waited over 30 minutes to order our dessert, after finishing our entrees. We had to leave the table to get someone to take our dessert order. Overall, we had a nice dining experience. The ambiance was good, our entrees were good, and the initial service was good. However, the appetizers were a disaster and the later service failed. This place is fairly average. I expect so much more from restaurants in the North End. There are plenty of other great options close by. They need to step it up a bit....

First impression: the easy choice. My friends and I had many other choices in the wonderful North End. However, hunger and impatience took over and instead of waiting it out at Carmen or Limoncello, we jumped at Ricardo's which to our delight (and later dismay) was quite available. We started with grilled octopus with a balsamic reduction and fennel. If the fennel had showed up, it may have saved this dish. Alas, burnt, over acidified and chewy was our fate for this under thought antipasto. The caprese was also sub par but to be fair, it is February in Boston, so I couldn't really expect fresh tomato could I? Our entrees were the most basic, under prepared interpretations of fantastic Italian classics. Under-seasoned, under thought and over priced. Our waitress did her best to maintain our spirits but at $50 a person for a modestly sized dinner, this was an impossible feat. Dear Ricardo. Please either increase quality of food or decrease price. Sincerely, Italian Food Snob is Snobby.

I have to tell you about our Valentine's Day celebration from hell. There was a group of 8 of us celebrating Valentine's Day a day early (Sat the 13th), thinking that we would avoid the crowds and get better service. Far from the truth. To start off the night, us 4 ladies were seated to our table while we waited for our sweeties to arrive. If we didn't get a drink at the bar, I don't think that we would've been served at least for another hour. The waitress didn't aknowledge us until the men arrived. Once our whole party was here, we ordered apps and asked for bread. THE BREAD WAS SERVED TO US FROZEN!!!!!! When we told the waitress, she goes "Oh.." and took it away. No explanation or apology. Apps were alright, mushroom ravioli = bad. We then asked for a wine list to order a bottle of red & white wine for the table. After the waitress gave us the wine menu for 5 seconds, she asked if we were ready to order--we hadn't even opened the menu yet. She then abandoned our table for about 30 minutes until our dinner arrived. When I tried to get her attention several times throughout that time by just saying "excuse me," I was astonished that she just walked in the other direction and ignored us. She then came over to correct me for asking and told me that she wanted to get the hot food out first before taking our drink order. Never in my life have I been corrected or seen a waitress act so unprofessional!!! You don't snap at customers and you should be fired, TERRIBLE SERVICE!! It then took a while to get the wine, which we didn't have time to finish before for our show that evening. Overall, I would avoid this place like the plague. Terrible food, Terrible service.

So surprised to see bad reviews for this place. A friend took me in last week and I've already been back once. The food is incredible, and their wine list has some real gems. I live in the North End and eat at a lot of the restaurants in the neighborhood, but Ricardo's is a real stand-out for two reasons. First, the food. The risotto is creamy and packed with flavor, the marinara sauce tastes bright and clean and goes great on the homemade gnocchi, and the Marsala sauce is absolutely drool-worthy. Everything I've tasted has been absolutely great. Second, the staff is wonderfully accommodating. A lot of places in the North End look at you like you just insulted their mother when you ask for a simple substitution. Not so at Ricardo's. I ate there with a friend who has multiple allergies and eating requirements, and both times they whipped up something delicious and filling that she could eat, all without blinking. This place is a real find for picky eaters and people with allergies. Bravo, Ricardo's. I'll be back next week.

I love this place. Moved into the North End last September, so I'm not sure what it used to be like, but it looks like the negative reviews below worked; if this place was bad before, they certainly have gotten their act together. The food is generous and delicious. The fra diavolo sauce is PERFECT. To die for. Get the seafood fra diavolo, or, I would even recommend swapping it in for almost any dish with a red sauce. Had it on their chicken parm last week and it was just as good there. The people are great; greeted kindly at the door every time I come in, and I'd say 2/3rds of the time the restaurant owner/manager comes by to thank us for coming in and asks how we are enjoying ourselves. An overall very pleasant man. Great to see someone thank you for patronizing their business, it really creates a warm atmosphere. View is nice and quaint if you can get a table by the open windows in the summer. Brick buildings across the street set a nice ambiance for an early summer evening meal. Last time through there, my girlfriend and I had a waiter who was in his first week there and was having a bit of a tough time, but I'm not cynical enough to think that people should be perfect all the time. He broke the cork trying to open our bottle of wine and proceeded to apologize the rest of the time for his mistake. I had no problem with it - everyone has a first week on the job.

Bad food and even worse service. Came here on a Friday night. Took my partner here on a special occasion and we'll never go back. When I sat down at our table, the chair was broken - causing my finger to be crunched and as a result part of my nail on my index finger turned purple. I told our waitress their chair was broken and I was hurt. She just looked at me and gave me some ice. No one came to apologize for their dysfunctional furniture. The waitress did not say more than five words to us the entire time and didn't even bother to let us know what the specials were. When we got our food, the pork was dry and overcookef and my pasta was bitter and my broccoli rabe was so over cooked that it was no longer green but brown. After that much torture and my physical injury, you would think you would get an apology or at least something on the house, but none of that happened. Dear yelpers, you are now warned. Double check your chair when you sit down or just never come here - ever.

We went on a Monday night and it was pretty much empty (which isn't surprising). The food was good (gnocchi and lasagna) but nothing to write home about. The busier / weekend nights may be different though. Our waitress and the owner / manager were friendly.

Food was Mediocre at best. Great service very attentive waiter. Cold bread, small apps for the price. Seafood Fra diablo - uninspiring, seafood was over cooked and expensive. Lasagna was absolutely terrible, Tasted like it was frozen then heated to breaking point in the microwave.

Enjoyed a nice dinner with my wife and two kids. Food was excellent and prices comparable to competitors. The restaurant was a bit slow although we were there rather early at 530. Waiter was attentive and pleasant. Sat at table next to window and enjoyed the view. Very nice atmosphere.

I happened upon Riccardo's because I went to Paul Revere's house across the street and I can say it should be one if by land and two if by sea to get here! No matter how you travel Riccardo's is worth the trip. The lasagna was the best I have ever had. Seriously. It was light, tender, moist, hot, the perfect blend of Italian sausage, ricotta cheese, lasagna noodles and tomato sauce. I will be thinking of this for a long time. The bread they bring to the table was first rate. It was also fresh hot and delicious. The noodle and bean soup was rich and creamy and would have been a perfect just by itself. Also the Caesar Salad was also amazing. The iceberg lettuce was crisp, cut to a manageable size and the dressing was expertly done. I don't know who was cooking on Thursday but they took great care to make the meals we ate there perfect. The wine list is great and the service was top notch. one last thing, besides the great view of the Revere House outside the window this place was also spotless. Bravo!

I was recently up in Boston visiting my family, and even though I grew up in Boston and spent a lot of time running around the town in my early 20s, I had never actually eaten in the north end before. My parents decided that they would take my boyfriend and I here while we were visiting. After walking to my usual haunts, we walked along the waterfront to the north end and my father picked this place for dinner. The wait staff was very nice and the man I believe is the owner greets everyone at the door. My boyfriend had a fettuccine Alfredo, which he thought was just okay, and I had the gnocchi. I've never had gnocchi before, but it honestly reminded me of the flavor of chef boyardi from back in the day (I've been a vegetarian for 15+ years, so waaay back in the day). My dad had some special that was like my gnocchi, but had veal in it and I have no idea what my mother had. When it came to dessert, the waitress was very confused of why I'd care if the canolli had been friend in lard, but I did convince her to actually go ask, and it was okay for me to eat. It was okay, not the best, but definitely okay. My boyfriend had lemon sorbet and boy was it lemonny. He only ate about 1/3 of it, and I could only manage a bite and I love lemon. Over all, the place is decent, not sure I'd return though.

Horrible- We sat down and the waitress didn't come over to ask us for a drink for 20 minutes, we had to ask the water girl to grab us a bottle of wine. Then it took another half an hour for calamari and bread to come out and another hour for our meal, and when I received my meal it wasn't cooked. We sent it back and shared one meal. The pasta was very good. I love the North End, but I would NEVER go back it was the worst service I have ever experienced, still mad I gave her a 20% tip, probably not all her fault, but sounds like this is a regular occurrence at this restaurant.

Ricardo's is my new North End favorite. Not only is their eggplant parmesan the best I've had in the North End, but their prices are reasonable and the service is excellent. I love eating there in the summer or fall because they open the windows out to the adorable North Street location, looking out onto North Square and Paul Revere's house. Definitely worth a try if you're over the Hanover Street crowds!

My overall dining experience at Ricardo's was quite pleasant. My boyfriend was in town for a few nights and we decided to plan an evening out (dinner and a movie, just to be cliché). I found a restaurant.com deal for Ricardo's, and decided to make a reservation for 8pm. The host explained that they were very busy, and that 8:30 would be much better. We decided to take our chances, and sure enough when we showed up at 8 we were told to come back at 8:30. We took a lovely stroll around the North End, stopped for a coffee, and then came back to Ricardo's. Unfortunately, our seats were still not ready. Normally this would upset me, but the host offered us free wine while we waited, and I must say, it was delicious! We couldn't possibly be upset after that, even though we were concerned about missing our movie (we ended up making it just in time). About 20 minutes later, we were finally seated, still happily sipping our free wine. Everything we ordered was truly enjoyable (especially the chocolate mousse). My chief complaint with this restaurant is that the portions were much too small. The boyfriend finished all his food in about 5 seconds because there just wasn't enough on his plate. However, we did both order meat/fish dishes and when I looked around to neighboring pasta dishes, I saw that they offered much larger portions. So in conclusion, if you want to experience a festive night out with someone special, this place will make you feel good. But if you want a really good meal and you're even a little bit hungry, I would not recommend Ricardo's.

We went to Riccardo's on a good friend's recommendation. The special was a pancetta-wrapped chicken breast in pomodoro sauce. It was excellent. The gnocchi was only meh. The price was the same as it was all over the north end. If there isn't a lineup, I'll go there. But I'm pretty ambivalent about the place. Go there if you're stuck for a place to eat, and it's 4th of july weekend, and everywhere else has a lineup down the block, and your hotel doesn't have a decent restaurant.

Wow - this place must have really turned itself around in the past couple months. I was hesitant to come here because of the reviews, but am so glad that I did because I thought it was all around incredible! We were greeted right away upon entering the restaurant last week and got a nice table by the window. The food was superb. We started with the stuffed meatballs for an app - what a great idea.. I may try this at home - delish! I had the chicken parm for dinner - large plate of food, pasta and chicken were both cooked to perfection. I even liked their sauce and I am a very hard critic on sauce since I make my own. Service was great - our servers name was Ashley (not sure on the spelling) but she was very attentive and helpful. The bonus was that we had a restaurant.com certificate - which they took without hassle. I will recommend to friends and family and will be back.

We're not sure how we found the ONLY bad Italian Restaurant in Boston, but we did. The experience was the worst I've had in a LONG time. I should have known that, on a Saturday night, the fact that there was no line was a bad sign. The place really wasn't that busy. After waiting for 45 minutes for our food in a badly carpeted sweat box (with cheesy Italian disco music playing), we walked out. We did get bread and water, but I've been to prisons where even that was better. The place was about 95 degrees inside on a 60 degree evening. The atmosphere was just plain awful -- no thought was given to the decor at all. Here's my advice... Stay away from this shit hole. Go to Giacomo's or one of the other great Italian spots on the North End. You'll have to wait, but the good stuff is worth it. Lesson learned.

Unfortunately we were given a gift certificate (again) to this restuarant so we came back because we had to, not because we wanted to. I think that our previous experience tainted our meal. Overall the service was fine, the wine was good, and the food was ok. It really wasn't that bad, but we were just not psyched about the place and felt that throughout the meal. For price and ambiance, you can do much better in the North End. If I could I'd go from 2 stars to 2.5 stars. First impressions mean a lot!

This restaurant was just OK. The service was slow and the waiter was not very attentive. The food was OK and we have had better seasoned Italian food. I will not try this place again. It has nice decor and it was packed but I don't think deservedly so.

Don't even think about sitting down on time. Although the manager bought us a round of drinks, waiting 45 min past our reservation even though we got to the restaurant 15 min early is totally unacceptable. The food was ok only. The veal chop was the best and the risotto Ricardo was also pretty good, the overall experience wasn't nearly worth the wait.

Let's be honest: this restaurant is an embarrassment to the North End. In a neighborhood known for Italian food, this place manages to suck in the tourists with its charming exterior and the promise of a good ol' traditional Italian meal. Don't fall for appearances. The food tastes like it was recently plucked from the freezer and cooked in the microwave. However, it's priced on-par with some of the finest restaurants in the city. When I went with my in-laws, no one finished their dish because the dishes were all just so unappetizing. The waitstaff did not seem particularly surprised or concerned to see a table full of people leaving much of the food uneaten (does this strike anyone else as odd?). Safe to say that we will never be back... there are too many good restaurants in the same neighborhood to make that mistake twice.

I would like to give this restaurant a zero rating like the previous reviewer. I have not had such a horrible experience as I had at this place. Coming to the North End on a saturday night with no reservations, my girlfriend and I ended up here, the only place that was not so crowded (go figure). After being seated, we waited 20 long minutes for our waitress, who finally came when we asked an employee for one. Our waitress was rude, aggressive, and completely forgot about us. The people who like this food obviously were brought up on TV dinners and food in a can. The bread she brought out was stale and gross. The caesar salad was drenched in mayonnaise (gross), the bruschetta was more of the same stale bread with nasty tomatoes on it, the pancetta tasted rancid, and the alfredo pasta was tasteless. I couldn't believe the total lack of care and horrible taste of the food served to us. We took a few bites and asked for the check. To top it off, this foul tasting food was expensive. The service and food was so incredibly bad, I left no tip, which I never do.

This restaurant is one of my girlfriend's favorites. We have gone for anniversaries and dates. The girlfriend always loves their Ministrone soup and cheese ravioli entrees. I myself have always enjoyed their specials, particularly a delicious halibut entree that I've had on more than one occasion. The waitstaff is friendly, polite, courteous and classy. The atmosphere feels a bit more personal or down to earth than some of the other high class Italian places nearby. Entrees start at $10 and go up to $25.

Good Points: 1.) Great Tasting Food - the food is teriffic and seemed very fresh. 2.) Good Assortment of Wine - we liked the sparkling wine 3.) Elegant Ambiance - very classy place, seemed popular with the locals. Bad Points: 1.) Bitchy Waitress, also was our hostess. From the first greeting - she seemed to look down on us. I am still not quite sure why. 2.) Dish sizes. Very small for their prices. An appetizer is needed for sure to compliment them. 2.) Terrible Parking - Well...its North End, so that was expected and did not count towards the rating. It was mainly the size of the dishes (really small), and the services.

I have definitely been to restaurants with much better food and service in the North End and was so disappointed to have taken out of town guests here. As other reviewers have commented, the owner sits at the bar and stares creepily at you like he is watching over the scene, yet when you actually need to ask for something he is chatting it up with your waiter and you cannot get their attention. The bottle of savingnon blanc that we got was terrible and overpriced, however we did find that they have two wine lists and one has the better priced better wines on it, so be sure to ask for that if you do go. The bread that they brought to the table was hard and cold and not good at all. The waiter talked so fast I could barely understand him. I will say that the homemade linguine that they had was good and probably the best part of the whole experience. However with the rushed service, and bad overpriced everything else I would definitely not come back here.

My wife and I ate at Ricardo's Ristorante in the North End last year (2007) and we had a wonderful experience. The food was great, the service was friendly, and we said that we must go back. So, we waited 1 year for our next Entertainment Book so that we could once again go and get the discount. This time around (2008), we did not have a great experience. The food was good, definitely good. I had the lobster ravioli, which was decent and my wife had the gnocchi, which was also decent. "Decent" is the key word here. The place is in the North End, so it's going to be expensive, but this time around I don't think the food was worth the price. For the cost of the food, it should be better than "decent". What really ruined it for us this time was not the food though. It was the SERVICE. Our waitress was snotty and rude and seemed like she did not want to be there. Hey Ricardo's, get rid of the bitchy waitress and maybe we'll come back, because we actually like your food.

I wish I could give Ricardo's a better rating, but I had a terrible experience with the reservation I made. I was coming with a large party, so I made sure to make a reservation far in advance. I was surprised that I didn't hear from the restaurant the day before or earlier in the afternoon, so I decided to call a few hours before we were to arrive. When I called, I was told by the host that he didn't have my reservation. But he assured me that we could be accommodated. A few hours later when we arrived, I was told that instead of one table, the group would have to break into two and sit on opposite sides. When I mentioned that I had called earlier and was told they didn't have my reservation, he said, oh yes, he was the one I spoke with, and they did actually have the reservation all along, but he was looking at the wrong page. Okay.... Still, we were not happy to be placed at two separate tables, and they didn't set up enough place settings or have enough chairs at first. It was just very inconvenient, especially since I had tried to arrange everything far in advance. Next time I will make sure that I call a few days ahead to make sure everything is set. The food was good, but the portions were fairly small. I had the Chicken Piccata with a side of penne with marinara sauce. I really could have used more pasta. I'm a small person and don't usually finish my meals in restaurants, but I cleaned my plate and was still not full. The moral of the story: Ricardo's is a nice restaurant with good Italian food, but not good for large groups, despite what their website says. Perfect for a couple or a group of four. I also recommend ordering some appetizers or soup/salad in addition to your entree.

So I went to Riccardo's last night for the first time and I absolutely loved it! The staff were very friendly, service was great and the food was delicious! My husband and I were in the area not sure where to dine, but when walking past Riccardo's the owner/manager who was standing outside was very friendly and inviting, which made us want to come in and try it out. We ordered the fried calamari and antipasto for appetizers which were absolutely delicious! I ordered chicken marsala for an entree and my husband had the veal parmesan. The portions were great and we were both very pleased with our meals! The friendly/accommodating staff, exceptional service and delicious food made for an overall amazing experience. I would recommend Riccardo's to anybody!

1 star only because I don't think I can set it to none. So, we opted to go to Ricardo's this evening based on the previous two recommendations here and a coupon on restaurant.com . Wow, I can't believe how disappointing it was! The place was very handsome, with the windows that fully open to the street and the service was nice enough -- the food was T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E though. I started with the caprese and the tomato's looked like they came from the supermarket, plastic with thick rind. My girlfriend ordered the seafood risotto and I ordered the Veal Picatta with penne on the side. The red sauce on the penne had a sheen of oil bubbles -- you skim that stuff off, you don't serve it to people -- I left it untouched. The Veal, while tender sitting in its pool of brownish, watery liquid, was flavorless -- lacking any hint of lemon and only possessing a few capers. The seafood risotto (mussels, calamari and shrimp) was suspiciously fishy tasting in the wrong kind of way. We sent the risotto back and promptly got the check, immediately heading to the nearest convenience store on Hanover Street for mints. ) ' :

not really sure what's up with all the bad reviews on here.. from the second i called ricardo's to make a reservation (for 6 on a saturday night) I was treated like family. they accommodated us in a cozy spot, and were very attentive. our waiter was great, friendly, and informative, and the food was delicious (i had some sort of dish with chicken & prosciutto..i loved it). At the end of our meal, the owner sent over complimentary shots of limoncello and came over to toast with us. maybe i'm not a "foodie" so i don't "get it," but to me the most important part of an italian restaurant is the authentic, family atmosphere. this place can offer so much more than some fancy, new-age version of chicken parmesan. it has old school italian heart.

I don't know where the other reviewers went, but I've been to Ricardo's at least 5 times and each time has been fantastic. The service is always good, I've tried multiple apps and dishes and all have been great. The lobster ravs are delicious and the squid ink pasta special was one of the tastiest things I've ever had (oddly enough!). I usually go with family and my mom and aunt ALWAYS get the pollo exquisito which is one of the best chicken dishes I've ever tasted from any of the restaurants in the North End. The only time I was disappointed was with the pollo piccata, but when I told the owner, he went in the back and made me a whole new meal that wasn't even on the menu for me to eat and take the rest for lunch the next day. Also, if you get the restaurant.com gift certificate, you even get a discount on your meal. So I'm not sure how everyone else has had bad experiences, I've been more times than all these people, and I highly recommend.

I have only eaten here once but i had a good experience... keep in mind I went on a Tuesday it was empty and I had a great waitress. To be honest there are better places to spend your money but not as bad as others make it out to be. The biggest problem with this place is the owner he is a pig and does not treat employees well. His son is the Chef nice guy with some talent, but other family members hang around and are in the way

A few things about this place. First of all, on a busy Saturday night, we showed up and the wait was only 25 minutes. Which was great. It was WAAAAAAAAAAY downhill from there, though. Our waiter was basically an auctioneer, speaking so quickly and hurrying us through our order that it was borderline uncomfortable. I can get over that though. What I can't get over is waiting 75 minutes for them to deliver three simple pasta dishes to our table. No appetizers, and we only got 3 stale slices of bread and tap water in the meantime. While others in my party found their meals passable, I got the orrechette with sausage and broccoli rabe. It was a negative 4 out of 10. There was no sauce to speak of, the pasta tasted like it was out of a Kraft box, the broccoli was very bitter, and the sausage was some of the worst I've had at an Italian restaurant. They not once came to check how we were doing, so by the time I finished stomaching 1/3 of the dish (which was all I could manage with the horrible, bland taste), there was no point in complaining or sending it back, and so I was saddled with a $22 bill for an inedible meal and a 10:25 departure. Awful awful, awful place. Don't go.

I had the pleasure of dining at Ricardo's with a large group of work colleagues. I had heard amazing things from friends that live in the North End - always a good quality recommendation as the North Enders know best. We were pleasantly treated to great service and food. Everyone walked away citing "that was the best service that I have ever had. I'd go there with a group again". The seafood fra diavolo dishes were a big hit. I was impressed by the taste and seasoning of my gnocchi with mushrooms, veal, capers and sundried tomatoes - an excellent choice. Finally - the cannolis were lightly flavored with amaretto, which was a great addition. I'd go back to the cannolis! All in all - great meal, host, service, and ambience.

I made reservations for last Saturday through open table. I thought it was odd that there was availability for every time. Nonetheless, I made the reservations for 7 p.m. Upon arrival, there was a line out the door and down the street. They obviously overbooked. It was difficult to get the attention of the host/hostess. Finally, we were acknowledged and we finally got seated at 8:15. We got seated only because we were persistent. If we weren't, we'd still be waiting. Getting seated an hour and 15 minutes late was bad enough, but no one took our order for another hour. We had to the bar to get our own drinks. We finally got our food at about 10 p.m. It was just ok, we were so hungry we would have eaten shoe leather. It was not cheap. We had great hopes of old friends coming to eat together and Riccardos brought us down. I won't be going there again. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere where the ownership cares.

My husband and I used to come here all of the time when we lived in Massachusetts. As two New Yorkers, we struggled to find good Italian food (even in Boston's North End) - until we found Ricardo's. They have the greatest tomato sauce in Massachusetts and were also always willing to accommodate our "not on the menu" requests. We hadn't been there in four years since we moved back to NY, but were recently visiting Boston and couldn't wait to go back to Ricardo's. Food was still delicious and the service (as usual) was great. I did take one star off because when we were there recently the owner was sitting outside the whole time smoking in front of the open windows.

Stopped by Riccardo's for a late afternoon bite with my mother and would definitely go back. We had the Gnocchi which was perfectly made plus great service from our very friendly waiter! We wanted to split a plate and they didn't charge us extra. Great location by Paul Revere's house and very nice atmosphere.

Went here with my friend and holy mother of god! The food was amazing and the service was above and beyond! The gnocchi was perfect and the flavors were explosive. Really need to go back soon!

Standard North End Italian done right. My weakness is always linguine with clams, and this was great. But with the advantage of not feeling as crowded inside as so many of the places here.

Service was slow, food was cold, avoid this place...north end has so many great places.... This is not one of them.

Ah, well...

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
