Meeting a friend from NYC on her lay-over back to the Big Apple, we popped in here looking for a few beers and some pub fare. I was glad to discover it had the dive-bar feel, the bartender was also our server and shortly after we chose a booth, he came over to take our drink order. Our table was kinda dirty, but we are resourceful chicks and wiped it down to the best of our ability, no need to make a fuss. Though tempted by the Turkey Reuben special... I went with a Cobb Salad and my pal went with Tuna Salad. We ordered a round of Stella's on draft and sat back for 2 hours of catching up. The salad's were meh... what I expected I guess. Given the not-so-hefty portion, the hefty price tag of $10 seemed a bit much. However, for 4 beers and 2 salads, great service and great conversation, leaving with my pocket only $15 lighter seemed like a steal.

JJ' is a great escape from the hustle and bustle. Appetizers are great, and a dinner in and themselves. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Skip the busy chains and come here!

JJ Foley's is probably my favorite bar in Boston. Gets busy on the weekends, as you would expect, and it sees a healthy after-work crowd on weekdays, but it's never impossible to get in the door, as with many similar establishments. Their staff is top notch, and the drinks are strong. Jim Savage may be one of the only old-school bartenders left in this city. Their draft beer list is extensive, featuring cheap options like $2 PBR and $3 Coors Light, a few old favorites like Guinness and Long Trail, and several beers you've probably never heard of. The food is cheap and delicious. They have a juke box, which can be a lot of fun if you're the one running it, but a pain in the ass if you get there and someone's on a nostalgia trip and playing back to back Journey hits. Comes with the territory, I suppose. The best thing is to come in with a group of friends on a slower Sunday or Monday night and just have the place to yourselves. I've literally never had a bad time at Foley's.

We decided to walk until we found a place to eat, and JJ Foley's is what we found. Their menu is standard pub fare, but very good quality. Our entire group was happy with what we got, even if it was just fish and chips. The bartenders were attentive without being overly so, even as things got busier as the evening went on. What really struck me about this place was how friendly the regulars were. When a few people found out we were from out of town and looking for fun things to do in the evening, the suggestions came flying (and the ones we took were amazing). We were taken under the wings of the locals and advised of what to do for the days we'd be around, and given specific directions to find unmarked locations. It was the clientele that gave this solidly 3* pub that extra star.

Usually it is pretty quiet here. Good place to relax after work and grab a drink. They sell two dollar BPR's but pour an excellent Guinness. Great atmosphere. I have had the food several times and it was nothing to complain about. Pub Food. But if are snackey try the homemade potato chips. I believe they were just three dollars, there was alot of them and they were tasty. Very salty but tastey. But that just gets me to drink more! And I am a fan of that!

Nice space, however it was a mad house. Over crowded and no room to move. It's more of a happy hour place, not my vibe but its ok if u like happy hour watering holes.

9:35 on a Saturday night, the line for The Good Life is forty people deep, and it's fifteen degrees outside...SOOOO going to JJ Foley's across the street. Decent drinks, really nice staff - Joe the doorman is one cool dude. No cover charge, which is a plus. Nice open space for awkward, half-assed drunk dancing; large seating area in the back. This place gets pretty bro-y as the night wears on, so be mindful of that if it's not your scene. Also, if you are a lady and you need to pee...bring a book or something, because there are only two toilets. God knows what those bitches be doing in there while you wait in line and your bladder feels like is going to explode.

One of my favorite bars in Boston mostly because it's a regular with co-workers of mine. The bar does get crowded on Fridays after work, but that's the same for any good bar in the downtown area. Also a fan of their bar food, which is always delicious and satisfying. Plus they serve grilled cheese sandwiches that are always perfect after a few drinks.

The bartenders recognize you by name here. Cheapest drink? PBR. Drink, that I got hooked on here? Magners. The food is good. The burgers, tips and salads are good. The fries are just heaping, but not so good. They have waiters/waitresses. They have a digital jukebox. This place gets packed on Thursday and Friday nights after the financial district lets out. Most of the crowd is in the 20's and 30's. It's divided into 2 rooms, so there is room to spread out if the first room is too packed. There's quite a few tables and seats in case you want to sit down or put a coat down. We've had lots of fun here. How to get here? Bus or walk from downtown crossing or S Station t stops.

I was wondering around downtown and was looking for a cheap dinner, and pretty much everything in this area was closed on a late Saturday afternoon. I noticed that the entrance to JJ Foley's was open and walked in. The place is a bit dark; you first walk into a large open space with tables perched against the wall on your left and the bar on your right. As you walk farther back, there's more normal seating. I ordered a veggie wrap to go and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was! For $8, there's lettuce, blue cheese, red and green bell peppers, and a tangy dressing of sorts. I think the order came with a side of fries, but I passed on that....Overall, very tasty! I'm very happy that I walked in by chance. The waitstaff who took my order was a nice guy too. They prefer cash I think.

We had a great time watching the Notre Dame game here! I did not know it was a Gamecock's bar when I went in, but the sign above the bar, and the pletohora of Gamecock's fans let me know immediately! They were all more than accomodating and allowed me to sit at the bar. The bartender was slammed but he immediately greeted me and got me a beer super quick. There is a $10 minimum to use a credit card, but my husband and I had a few beers each so we crossed that threshold no problem. The burgers looked really big and juicy - we had dinner plans so we couldn't indulge, but we spoke about cancelling our reservations to have one of those burgers!! Overall, a great, friendly bar with attentive staff and fun fans!

Went here for Lunch, looks like a pub with alot of cheap beers, 2 dollar PBA! during happy hour. Got a fried fish sandwhich, wasnt too bad. Places seemed like a typical divy pub, the front of the place smells a little too much like a toilet for my taste and the soda was flat. Prices was fair less than 15 dollars a person.

This place is awesome! I've been here twice and it's great to see the Irish pubs that have old guys working behind the bar who are not only keeping drinks filled but are also cracking wise with the customers. The bartenders can make just about anything without a second question and it just reminds me of that Cheers' kind of bar, except for the regular barfly's sitting everywhere. The only thing I don't like about this place is the cash only part. Although at one point, it's hilarious to see drunk people fuck up an ATM by not putting the card where it's supposed to go, among other things.

The $5 Guinness I got was possibly one of the best I've had in Boston. I don't know how, I don't know why. It just was. I believe they also have some cheap beers on tap as well. A $2 PBR if I'm not mistaken. I'd say bring a large group here on a weeknight because it's going to be more or less empty otherwise. They close the kitchen before 9PM. What's up with that!? I would've stayed here longer to drink and eat and give them more of my business, but I was starving. So adios, JJ.

I love Foley's. The second time I tried Guinness it was here. I disliked it as much then as the first time I had it, which was in Wiesbaden (then West-) Germany when I was 18 and hanging out with a friend who was a mailman in the U.S. Army and two of his Army friends. Looking back I'm confused about why we were drinking Guinness in Wiesbaden, but that's neither here nor there. It took me a while to get into Guinness, but no time at all to get into Foley's. I was friends with some bike couriers who introduced me to the place in college. I wasn't a courier, but I fit in there OK. They fit in too. So did the business guys with loosened neckties and the guys who looked like they spent a lot of time at the dog races at Wonderland. Years later I was there with a friend (who fit in just fine too). He pointed out that former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn was sitting at a booth. We entertained ourselves for several minutes by talking to each other in Barney Gumble's voice pretending that we were going up to Ray's table and bombarding him with inane drunken questions and observations. I like to think that he didn't hear us, and he seemed like a cool enough guy that if he had he probably would have come over and told us to quit being stupid.

Boston is chock full of pubs, there is no denying that. When you're in downtown, you can't go a block or two without running into a bar or pub. In the tradtion of two letter first names, like PJ Ryan's and RF O'Sullivans, JJ Foley's is yet another solid bar and eatery in the Boston area. Located near the Financial District and South Station, this bar offers a great place to chill and decompress after a long day or work or a nice meal with some friends. With a full bar and plenty of food options, you can't go wrong with this place. The nachos are suprsingly simple, but done very well. With bits of onions and peppers sprinkled amongst the cheese and chips hodgepodge, its a great starter for a small group. Very few chips find themselves without cheese coverage. Its pretty great. The burgers are cooked to your liking and are seasoned incredibly well. These are not frozen patties. These are made to order and not too greasy or heavy. The fries are actually cut from potatoes, lightly salted and seasoned, giving a nice flavor combo with the burger. Even by themselves, they provided a nice little meal. The staff is friendly and are make sure your drink and food needs are met promptly and quickly. Granted, later a night with a bigger crowd, its hard to flag them down to close out, but there shouldn't be too much of a rush. A place like this is meant to be there to relax and let all the day's worries melt right off you. JJ Foley's gives a nice and chill experience that will make you want to become a regular.

True this place was actually open when me and my friends wanted a drink and there isn't much else nearby that isn't some fancy bar/restaurant, but this place is just blah and ordinary and my cider was flat. This bar is just like every other bar you could possibly go to in boston--it has a wooden interior and some booths to sit in, but really it has no character of its own at all. I think all bars should have some sort of unique trait or quality, but this one really had nothing. And not only was my cider flat they were also out of two of their beers on tap as well, so not a very stocked bar at all either. And no one was in here, so not sure where all of that beer went to? I dunno, I just like my bars to have some pizzaz and this place I felt sad giving my money for my flat cider. I just was so underwhelmed that I even felt too lazy to give my cider back to the bar ha ha But it was pretty cheap and I guess your average spot to get a drink especially since it was one of the only places open in that whole area too.

Great spot to wind down after a busy work day. JJ's is like a slightly unkempt, comforting friend who gives you beer. You'll almost always leave with sticky, beer-stained shoes, but c'est la vie. It's usually pretty busy, but you never have to wait too long to get a drink. Bartenders are friendly and won't ignore you for 15 minutes while you wave your arms like a drowning victim at a beach. The same can't be said about a number of bars I've blacklisted, so JJ's is cool with me:).

Very dark inside. I now know how a vampire feels walking into light when I left the restaurant. Fries were fabulous, cooked very well and crispy. And fresh haddock is unbelievable, the breading here was just right. So yeah, it may be standard pub fare, but it seemed to me that they did a better than average job with it.

Spent the best years of my life in the back room of this awesome bar. Great staff good food no bullshit.

Very long wait for very bad food. We came in and ordered a burger (medium rare) and shake, and the white pizza with mushrooms and spinach. About 15-20 min later, the shake showed up. We were starving, so we had the shake. The rest of the food took forever, and my burger was well done (bun was burnt, tasted of charcoal) and the pizza was bland and boring (melted cheese on flatbread with about 10 canned sliced mushrooms and a few pieces of spinach. Service was poor, basically an entirely bad experience (well, at least we didn't get food poisoning). Maybe it is good for a bar, but it is horrible as a restaurant.

J.J., I have no problem with you. Your bartenders are friendly, your beers are decently priced and finding a seat to plant my bum on was super easy on a busy Friday night. Other patrons (people, not tequila..focus man!) weren't quite as obnoxious as I had half-expected (although some smart-ass played like, a hundred consecutive Lenny Kravitz songs...yes, they have a jukebox.) But, when there was a good song on, there was room enough to break out a make-shift dance floor and bust some moves. Smooth Criminal anyone? Wait. Back that up. I do have one problem with Mr. Foley: No Sam Adams??

  • Josh O.

Not a bad bar at all. They've got a pretty large selection of beer (they even serve both Murphy's and Guinness, which is cool) and the chicken quesadilla we had was decently good. Our waitress had a bit of an attitude, but she was fast and accurate with the service, so no big deal. I also love the old-school, black-ceilinged, no-natural-light atmosphere. My kinda place. If it weren't completely inconvenient to any place I'm at on a regular basis, I'd probably be back there. I did think the prices were a little high though, that quesadilla I mentioned was $9! Star off for that.

Kate Hudson, Justin Timberlake have tasted the taps along with Bono and a few local legends (including me). If you are looking for a dark hole to hide out in where everyone can find you. I recommend JJ Foleys. It is part of our weekend ritual to visit here for last call whenever we feel we have not had enough. It is always such a great idea to drive 10 miles for one last sip. Don't you agree!!?!? JJ's is not just a last call spot there is always a unique local crowd in here. The lunches are even pretty good. Try the fish and chips and the cob salad. It is also a fab after work spot. Try it out. Plug some Clash into the jukebox and if you are lucky Jimmy may take you for a spin in the middle of the floor.

JJ Foley's is one of the bars I end up at the end of the night or when I am meeting someone right after work (cheap beers, great atmosphere and sometimes I want my beer served by someone with a white apron on, it makes me feel classy). That being said, I had never eaten there, until today. And it was delicious: the grilled veggie wrap flavorful and not too soggy with the addition of some fresh hearty lettuce. My friend's teriyaki chicken salad looked just as good. The food was also ready quickly so that it didn't even take that long for a sit down lunch. Oh yeah, and the Guinness was cold and perfectly poured. Thanks JJ's for a perfect power lunch.

Not a bad place to go drown yourself in Guinness and play dominos all night long (provided you bring your own set, of course). Great bar that I would go to a lot more if I hung around downtown a lot more. The dark wood decor and open space is pretty comfy, and the bartender seemed pretty cool. No complaints from me.

  • B G.

Foley's is all right. The beer selection is admirable, I can get a bottle of High Life for under $3, the selection in the internet jukebox is pretty fly and it was 2 minutes from the office. However, the guy who owns it is a bit of a bigot (not a gay friendly place, FYI), his son the bartender is not nice at all, their fries are totally awful (how do you screw up fries?), the uniform seems to be a blue button-down shirt and khakis and the place is so loud you have to shout for your friends to hear you. Unless you're there on a Saturday night. Then it's totally empty except for the "working girls." ..shudder.. I moved out of the city, and I don't miss the place at all. There are better.

One of my favorite bars so far in Boston. Due to the fact that I am in East Boston, it can be a pain sometimes to get out and about to other parts of town, and when I'm not in the mood for travel, J.J. Foley's is a good option. Just a easy walk off of state street from the blue line and you are there. Last night was my second night spent here, and both times I have enjoyed myself. A good selection of beers on tap. TV's are available to watch the games, and the bartenders are on top of their game. I'm not a huge fan of large crowds, so one of the things I have enjoyed is that even on a Saturday night its not jam packed. There was a nice crowd, but it was never an issue getting the bartenders attention to grab another drink. Another plus is that they have cheap PBR on tap if you are getting low on funds.

  • Seamus O.

Not a bad Irish bar at all. The bar staff are great. I don't go here as often as I should but the staff remember you. The Guinness ain't bad either. Sadly they stopped doing curry chips :-( The only downside is it's a Winter bar for me. The place is perpetually dark. It's hard to go in there after work on a hot Summer's day. Great place for a quiet pint after work...except Fridays.

    (4)
  • Sean E.

There's seems to be some confusion with the different J.J. Foley's around Boston. This is the one downtown. Not the South End. The same one that someone else opened up another page for (do duplicates ever get deleted on yelp?). Anyway, it's a good place to grab a pint, maybe catch some of the game or meet up with friends. The service is really good here -- the Irish guy who hates soccer is one of my all time favorite bartenders in Boston. A funny guy. But I digress... The beer selection here is suprisingly good, as is the jukebox. The food is even ok if you're feeling adventurous. The place can get packed quickly at nights (bike messengers seem to flock here after hours) so I prefer to call this the good place to kill an afternoon.

  • Southie G.

If you're looking for a dive bar, I give this place five stars. However if you're looking for a nice place for a drink, I can barely give it two. The drink selection is limited to beer and very basic mixed drinks. And the food, well...its only meant to satisfy drunk people. Its dark,(windowless to be exact) and probably hasn't been scrubbed clean in a while. My husband and his buddies would LOVE this bar, though they would probably only give it four stars since you can't karaoke to Journey after getting hammered on Miller lights. The point is, this is a your typical dive bar. If that's what you're looking for, you'll love this place.

    (2)
  • Bonnie G.

If I could give 2 1/2 stars , I would. My friend called this a real dive bar, but...THIS is a dive bar? No, it is a regular ol' bar. Friends, have you been to the famed Waltham Tavern in South End, where there is a sign that says "Ladies Welcome", the bartenders have mixers of generic orange soda, they find beers in coolers with flashlights and there is baby powder and handicapped shower seats randomly placed? THAT is a dive bar. J. J. Foley's? Not so much. I could see how it is very comfortable...compared to the cheese fests of financial district where you could construct another 2-dimensional finance dude with a blue button down shirt and khakis out of the amount of MBAs in the bar. But...it is just. a. bar. Nothing special. Easy enough to find, I finally went there for the first time last night. One star for: Miller High Life, 3 bucks and cold, no tude bout it? Awesome. The other star: I kind of like the seating here-I ended up sitting in a small two person booth that was kinda cute.A long bar on the right when you walk in with booths on the left (reminds me of the dreaded Pour (shit) House), then another room with lots more tables and these strange little bar counters (with no...bartender?) and stools. But pretty malleable and could easily find a way to fit a lot of your friends here. 1/2 star: The music was pretty good from the juke box and people seemed to have fun. But, the location is lame if you don't work there and the people were all semi-in the know office professionals who seemed proud to know about this 'dive bar'-hey, here is a memo, Chad, it ain't that seedy!

  • Lisa M.

This place is a Boston classic, tho I'm sure exactly how long Foley's has been here. They do have a cult like following of regulars. Good Service, cheap drinks, and friendly people all around...what more could you ask for? It is off the beaten path but I think that's what makes it kinda special and the fact that Bike messengers, 9-5ers, and sorority sisters can all co exist!!!! Foley's-one of a kind!

The first time I was here, it was New Year's Eve 2001 and the place was just mobbed. We were all packed into the big open space between the bar and some dining booths. We had a lot of fun (as I recall). The last time I was here was for the final stop of the Red Line Pub Crawl (I missed a few stops leading up to this because I needed food and a rest - yes, I'm lame). I wished I'd made it to the Beantown Pub (right before Foleys) for my last stop instead. At 1:00 am on a Saturday night, this place was pretty dead and kind of dreary. I'd come back for apps and drinks, but not sure about the night club aspect. It's also a pain to get to on Kingston Street . . . that area is very dark at night it doesn't make for a fun walk from the Common when the winds are biting cold!

  • Jenny M.

The ONLY reason I'm giving Foley's 4 stars is that....I despise the crowds at 5:30 pm on Friday night. Other then that I LOVE IT! The crowds usually leave by 7 to get to their trendier bars or catching their traints. I love this place, it is the best, best. My boyfriend says the toilets are THE WORST he's ever seen. But the women's rooms are fine, probably better than your average dive bar. Cheap beers, like 2.50 for a pint. I love the bartenders, I like the food. it is decent bar food and actually I got a greek salad there once, delicious!!!!

  • Ed M.

Like most places in Downtown Crossing, during the week it is cool to visit for happy hour but there are many happy hour spots I would rather have a beer in and other places to go for lunch. Decent size place and almost all the beers are going to cost 4.50 or so. Went for lunch a couple times, they refuse to make nachos at lunchtime, ran out of beef (what the hell?) one day, knocking half the items available off the menu and the poor waitress was going around like a chicken with her head cut off. Maybe a second waitress is needed for lunchtime in Downtown Crossing? The chicken panini/toasty sandwich is good but again, there are much better places to go in the area...

This is a pleasant little Irish bar. Good place to sit down have a few beers and chat. I personally don't make it into Boston Proper very often (I prefer staying in Cambridge) but if I were to head in that direction, Foley's would be on a short list of bars I'd be interested in going to.

    (4)
  • Dave L.

I had been at night when it was crowded, and the place was decent, but nothing special. This recent trip for a quick lunch was very impressive. Good food (the fries were great). Decent prices. An above average selection of beer (also at pretty good prices for this part of town). And quality service. The waiter/bartender who waited on us was hilarious and gave my lunchmates a good natured ribbing.

  • Marcus D.

Not a bad choice on a pub crawl or if you're just passing time on a rainy afternoon by getting gloriously drunk. The late great Joe Strummer of the Clash used to come in here, as I recall. Never ate in here, though, but then again I don't go to bars to eat.

    (3)
  • Rosalind P.

SO the only nights I have been here are Tuesday's before i go to the Good Life to hear some awesome music. I can always find a table and it is great to go with a group. If you want to eat, the food comes slow and you have to order at the bar on occasion. I wouldn't go here for a fancy meal, but apps and 2.50 Coors Light sound great. The bartenders are nice and friendly. I just love cheap beer and a cool atmosphere. The after work crowd is laid back and looking to get loose. HA!

Great postwork hangout. No frills place with cold beer and plenty of space to sit or stand. Bartenders are fantastic. And Mr. Foley is ready to greet you with a handshake and a smile.

JJ's on Kingston! What can I say, I've been going since I was old enough get in. Met a lot of great people here including my guitar hero Joe Strummer.

A solid after-work bar. Can get crowded, but still able to move around, carry a conversation with friends and/or co-workers without yelling over music, and not feel uncomfortable with the atmosphere. Drinks are reasonable by Boston standards, bartenders are friendly and serve promptly. Haven't tried the food, so can't comment on that.

  • Julie B.

the bar itself had a cool, old timey feeling to it that i very much admired, but i'm always very skeptical of places that are dead at 10:30 pm on friday nights, which this place was. i ordered one drink, and although i was happy with the taste and the price, this isn't a place i'd die to go back to...

  • Kate F.

For the hours between 11pm and 2am JJ Foleys is a great place to hit with friends, enjoy cheap and plentiful beers, the accent of a relatively friendly bartender and a jukebox. They are open until 2 on the regular. I'm sure their buddies stay inside behind locked doors much later. These late nights are when JJ Foley's has done me right, and for the hours of fun I've had on a few nights here, I thank them.

  • Teju P.

I have spent quite a few hours after work sipping on beers at Foley's. Its a great Irish dive bar that doesn't try to be anything its not. Good for a big group especially if you are on a tight budget. You can watch a game and the music is low so you can actually chat.

    (3)
  • Todd K.

The one great thing about Foley's downtown is it's location, a half a block from my office. Besides that it's pretty average in every way. The bartenders are pretty cool though and they've got a decent beer selection...and if you are really having a rough morning you can belly up at 10am when they open...

    (3)
  • Keith D.

Someone tell me where else you can find a place with as much personality and atmosphere. I've had more laughs here than I remember The beer is always ice cold, the food is good for bar food and the staff knows how to have a good time. If you can't take a joke don't do back...try ripping him back next time! It takes a minute, but before you know it everyone from the regulars to the staff (miss understood) will remember and welcome you back every time. So, if you want a place to end your night of drinking (and it will) stop by have a cold one and make fun of the bartender with the biggest ears in Boston!

  • Katia M.

JJ's is a great post-work Friday Happy Hour kind of spot. The food is definitely solid, and while there's quite a bottleneck between rooms, the little walk up spot apart from the barstools is an awesome idea. I have the best time here when I sit at the barstools with my girls and drink too many Newcastles and Red Headed Sluts before retiring back to Southie. Love the bartenders, too.

Great bar. The drinks are reasonably-priced, the staff is courteous and friendly, it's never been over-crowded when I've been, and the food's pretty damn good, too! Another reviewer mentioned the jukebox; it's the only place I've been able to hear both the Clancy Brothers and the Pet Shop Boys one after the other. So you really can't go wrong with that!

Great happy hour place. There are two JJ Foley's locations and this one is great for going after work. It gets really crowded but not overly crowded (like the other one does late night). The bar staff is great. They always keep you on your toes with the sarcastic comments. Always a good time!

This place confuses me. The set up of the bar is really good with a bar area and a larger room with tables and booths. The beer selection is very impressive and the food is very good (the nachos are gigantic and have everything you could ever want on them). I have however had some unfortunate run ins with some of the patrons who seem to think of women as objects to be grabbed and leered at. This is no fault of the staff who seem very nice but it still sours my mood toward the bar as a whole.

This is my local watering hole. OK -food but great bartenders. Its my go to when I need one of the coldest and best poured pints of guinness in town.

fun place for drinks in DTX -- a typical after work hangout. the bartenders are hilarious and the jukebox is well stocked and fun to play with. good drinks, good location, good food, good prices -- never a bad choice!

If you are looking for a great bar local bar experience this is your place. It has a great juke box and the wittiest bartenders in town. They serve Lunch and Dinner till 9:00. Get there early on the weekend because it fills up fast. The best Guinness in town!!!

Curry Fries & Korean Wings? I thought I was in an asian restaurant, but it was a must get. Very flavorful and cheap for it's portion. Went there for an early 11am lunch, was very quiet, but it was great. Kind of dark inside since it's a bar type environment. The service was quick.

A staple of Boston, JJ Foley's is a nice place to grab a drink. It is a bit divey, with a bar in front and sit down tables in back. We stopped here for a nightcap after dinner, and it did what we needed. We were able to get a drink for cheap, with beer prices very low. Bartenders are fun and place has a divey, yet lively feel. Looking for a divey alternative to other bars around downtown? Give this place a try. I'm not clamoring to come back, but I wouldn't hate stopping by again.

Run of the mill little bar in Boston. Prices and selection are average. Good place to get a few quick beers before a show at the Orpheum if you are sans children. There was a good mix of 6 people for a Tuesday night just after happy hour. Some business professional looking folks and a few people wearing casual jeans and tshirts.

A little divey, a little ghetto, a lot awesome. The wait staff i've encountered have always been friendly and heavy handed with the drinks. Dana is a reoccuring person i've encountered and is always very kind, courteous, and checks in just enough so that my drink is always full but not in an overly annoying way which most waitstaff operate. I like taking my team out after work for happy hour here to let loose and have a few after a long day in the financial district.

Ok...time for an update, I guess. While the old rule of thumb was "don't eat at Foley's" that has changed in the last 7 years. It is now OK to eat at Foley's (actually, it always was OK to eat there, it's just that drinking was more fun.)

Used to come to this place every Tuesday night for 4 years straight because the bar my band played at across the street was too snobby and expensive. So the band would hit JJ's before the gig, at setbreak, and after the gig till closing. After about a 4 year hiatus, I went to JJs the other night and I was pleased to see the same two bartenders, the same chalkboard art, the same fresh PBR, and the same kickin' jukebox. And the same flies over the booze bottles but whatever are you too good for flies????? JJ's is the deal dat's real

Three reasons this place gets three stars: 1) I came with a bunch of coworkers who really needed some alcohol - an hour later, they'd only been served one round (and certainly not for lack of trying). Maybe it was a super busy night?? 2) The food is your standard, unspectacular pub fare. I ordered a cheeseburger (hard to screw up, right?), requested medium, and it came out pretty well done (not to mention, the burger wasn't all that flavorful). 3) I ordered a milkshake since there was a deal where it came with the burger, and I'm amazed and somewhat flabbergasted to say that JJ Foley's is the first institution that has taken a literal interpretation of the term. My strawberry "milkshake" tasted like a shaken cup of strawberry flavored milk (with a little bit of melted ice cream thrown in for good measure). And yeah yeah yeah, that totally serves me right for ordering a milkshake at a pub in the first place ... but still, shaken milk?!? Don't get me wrong - the people are friendly enough, and the atmosphere is pretty chill, which would make it a fine kind of place to hang out. Just be prepared for fairly long waits (30 minutes for a beer?) and rather forgettable food.

Stopped in during a layover at the airport Easy 20 minute ride on the silver line and like 10 minutes walking. Solid pub grub. Super friendly. Not sure what the evening is like, but the afternoon hit the spot. Also, I think I may have seen somebody getting a handy at the bar. Ha ha. Not sure if this is business as usual, but I didn't see it on the menu. Could be a plus or a minus, right?

Remarkably, last night was the first time I set foot in JJ Foley's and I have lived in Boston for more than 20 years. I suppose I am nostalgic for comfortable, unpretentious, old-fashioned bars as I mellow with age. The space was clean and neat, the bartenders looked dapper in the old-school white aprons, white shirts and black neckties, and the regulars were friendly. The beer selection was decent. I could kill a couple of hours here with a friend or two on a chilly fall or winter evening. If a classic tavern is your thing, by all means, try JJ Foley's.

Came here for a quick (St. Patty's Day) drink with the GF, and ordered a blue moon. The beer was good, but kind of expensive ($6.50); however, that's expected being in Boston. All the employees I came in contact with from the bouncer to the bar tender were very friendly...I recommend this place for a quick drink or place to hang out with friends/grab a drink.

This place was solid. We went here after the St. Pattys day parade and it wasnt too packed. The service was really fast and we never felt rushed. The beer tasted a little off, the lines could probably use a cleaning, or it could have been the plastic cups but it wasnt bad enough for us to stop drinkin while we were here.

  • Jeremy W.

I've never come here when it was packed, so I always had a good experience here. The drink selection is nice, your standard Irish pub. I've had food here once and it was pretty good. There was one time where a bunch of friends and I went, but their tables couldn't really fit all of us so that was a bummer. There were 2 of us awkwardly hanging out at the end of the table, but not really part of it.

If you're in the Chinatown/Financial District part of town and you're looking for something aside from fast food or Pho, JJ Foley's is a good bet. It's your standard bar with pub-fare. JJ Foley's feels more casual and relaxed than other bars I've been to in the area that cater to a higher end crowd. This feels like a regular neighborhood bar, although I don't know if anyone actually lives in this neighborhood. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way in Boston to come here, but I definitely like it as a place to grab a beer after work, or occasionally have a sit-down lunch.

Love this little Irish Pub. I was invited by my date. He chose the location due to my arriving on the Silver Line from the airport (walk from South Station). Honestly, first glimpse revealed a rough worn sort of place but was revealed inside was a lovely Irish pub with a great beer selection, clean ladies room, lovely bartender and basic but decent pub grub. This is an adorable find and a perfect date spot to watch the game and cozy up in the booths. It was a welcoming atmosphere.

On our first full day in Boston, my wife and I came across J.J. Foley's after walking through Chinatown. It ended up being a great pub-type spot for a late Sunday afternoon lunch. We dug the whole vibe of the place, and had a pretty decent meal of a burger and club sandwich. The dude working was nice. He joked with us and had some great music playing, and gave us our space -- didn't keep checking in on us, but was always close by. Lots of beer on tap. We had a Long Trail IPA, a Harpoon IPA, a Newcastle and I forget what else. We really lucked out in stumbling across the place, and for experiencing it during a lull so we could really look around. People started to pile in to watch sports as we finished up and cashed out. I'm pretty sure we'd be regulars there if we lived in the area.

I just love this place...not because there's anything spectacular about the food (it's bar food...no surprises in store, folks) or that the liquor magically pours itself into my mouth - but because of the service and ambiance. It's really warm and inviting inside, and the service I had from the bartender (who served us at a table) was super warm and friendly. I didn't get my beer refilled as quickly as I had liked, but I'd rather wait a few extra minutes because a great bartender is busy than get served quickly by a jerk. All-in-all I was happy with my visit and would definitely come back.

I've found that sometimes Foley's is hit or miss but in general, it's a place I enjoy. The food is decent, though for bar food I prefer Biddy Early's a few blocks over. The highlight of this place is the $2 glasses of PBR. You really can't go wrong. Any beer besides PBR however, is around $5. The reason I don't go to Foley's more though is because their kitchen closes kind of early. I believe it's something like 10 on the weekends and 8:30/9 on the weekdays though don't quote me on that. Either way, there have been a few times I've gone there and been told we couldn't order food since places like Biddy Early's serve food at least until midnight if not later. Overall, the seating situation at this bar is better than most so if you want to sit down and drink and eat (but only before 10) this is a good place to go. Otherwise, I'd go somewhere else.

Decent bar food, good beer selection (and prices!), and you are guaranteed some good people at this place. My favorite description of JJ's for people: this bar won "Best Place to Drink Alone" in a survey this year. It is always loud, but at least they have a good jukebox!

So the Cobb Salad here was good. It was served in a large tortilla salad bowl shell and was loaded with all the fixins. The pieces were bite size and with good portions of tomatoes mixed up throughout. Seems like I've had both extremes recently where salads are concerned. Either all tomatoes or just one or two so as baby bear says...this was just right. It was a nice blend of greens, bacon, and eggs. I had my fruity Sex on the Beach drink and it had good flavor. Not as strong as I would have liked but an overall decent drink. The place is tucked away in the Downtown Crossing area. It is safe to walk there during the evening and may appear sketchy but it is near other restaurants and stores with lots of folks milling about. I actually had my wallet fall out of my bag and was called by the local restaurant telling me they had found it! Wow I lucked out. It is awesome that there are still honest decent people in the world but anyway...from my experience this is a safe area during the evenings. This area is busy during the day and slims down at night but it is a close place to go for a drink after work. Inside you will find two separate areas. You can sit at the bar and hang out but there are plenty of tables and booths so you can have something cozier or you can simply mill around in small groups to socialize. The place is dim but not dark and during this particular night during the week we could have conversations among us without screaming.

If old photographs of Boston hotspots is your thing, then you should definately check out Foley's. The walls are decorated with late 1800's and early 1900's photos of Copley, DTX, and many other historic locations for which our great city is loved. Good selection of beer on tap as well. And spacious. It was set up as a typical Irish sports bar, yet the floor space made it so much better than average. We sat in one of the booths which lined the far wall, and had a good seven to eight feet between us and the bar stools. That made for a MUCH more pleasant atmosphere than other similar bars. What sold me was the friendly greeting at the door. This guy must have been the owner or manager... older fella... but very welcoming as he checked our ID's. That's all I have for now, but I'll definately be checking this place out again.

I've only been here twice - once last night. My friends wanted to go to Good Life, but after looking at the line from the cab, I put the kibosh on TGL right quick. I marched with all the ladies I was out drinking with right to JJ's. The older guy who was checking IDs was probably the nicest person I have ever interacted with at a bar. Seriously - this guy was welcoming, and offered to get us a seat, after we tried to squish all 6 of us into a booth. He even took our picture for us. He was wicked nice. The place is dimly lit, and has tons of old pictures of Boston posted up on the walls. They have great beers on tap, though I opted for a Coors Light last night... I want to come here for dinner sometime, but it's not really on my radar, as I don't usually head downtown for anything, except the occasional night out drinking. They have a jukebox and correct me if I'm wrong, but my memory is that the men's bathroom is opposite the front door, and the ladies roomS are in the back of the bar... I think that's what I recall. The nice bouncer dude told us to enjoy our night and be safe and all kinds of nice things on our way out. I'm goin back, fo sho.

It was a sweltering June day as we walked into JJ's. We spent the afternoon walking around Boston and were ready for a bite to eat. Inside, JJ's was a mix of old cherrywood woodwork and a dive bar. Soccer was playing on the television, and a few single patrons sat at the bar. My friends and I took a booth. After being served drinks, we asked for menus. The server informed us that the kitchen just closed. It was 6:00pm! What pub closes their kitchen during dinnertime on a weekend? Frustrated, we finished our drinks and left. What was equally unpleasant was that although it was 95º outside, it was barely any cooler inside the bar. A lone ceiling fan was blowing. I'm not sure if older Boston establishments have air conditioning? (In Cincinnati, most of our old businesses have been equipped with A/C.) When it gets this hot, they should certainly look into it. No food and a hot, stuffy interior. I expected more from an Irish Pub in Boston.

Really cool place to grab drinks. but not such a cool place for food, the chicken tenders, um, they looked like fried calamari. the fries, eh, must be the frozen variety . Don't you know you are suppose to disguise the fact that they are frozen? onions rings, but they looked ok. and whats with the green stuff they sprinkled on everything!?!?!? also, why is the men's room up front and the ladies room is all the way in the back!?!!?!?

This is probably the closest pub to our house, and I have no idea why we don't go here all the time. This is an excellent pub. Food is great, and loved the super tall Irish guy behind the bar. A few friends and I stopped by Mr. Foley's House to grab a quick bite to eat in preparation for a strenuous but fun night out on the town. We wandered by and weren't in the mood for Kingston so... Irish pub it was! When we wandered in we were greeted and carded in a guy with a long white apron which was interesting as our server didn't wear an apron so why would the doorman? But I digress, the inside has seen better days people-wise and upkeep-wise. It was pretty empty and the place could use a renovation or two. To be honest, I was skeptical and wanted to run outside and go crawling back to Kingston.... but I didn't. So we sat down. The menu also made me cringe and expect to worst. Standard pub fare but when my burger and onion rings arrived.... I knew before I even took a bite that this place was a gem. The cheeseburger was perfection. Perfectly grilled. The onion rings were spot on. I hate the pre-made frozen gross ones but I also hate the house-made huge ones with the batter that doesnt stick to the onion so when you take a bite the whole onion slides out of the shell (come on guys, we all know what I am talking about!). These onion rings were perfectly crispy and each bite resulted in fried deliciousness accompanied by a sweet bit of greasy onion. Can it get any better? Why yes... add the Guinness please! All in all, JJ Foleys would not be a place that I would come to hang out but, for a quick and delicious bite to eat, you will not have to twist my arm.

Why is downtown Boston so hard to search for a low-key pub/bar? Even with my Yelp app on my phone! After tredging miles and miles of downtown Boston (I even contemplated having cake for dinner at Eldo's!!) we finally reached JJ Foley's. Thank God. There's one main guy. Forgot his name but he's the one in the apron. The one behind the bar...the one taking orders...the one serving. Perhaps even the guy cooking up our orders. I'm surprised this guy is still sane! Nonetheless, his genuinity (sp?) is still there and he treated us real nice. The bar is split into two sections. One's the major dining room and the other has maybe four booths with the stocked bar in front. We ordered fish and chips -- two huge chunks of fish and a mound of french fries. Not the best fries and the fish could've been in smaller chunks. I don't know. I like my fish extra crispy. Also got the cheeseburger -- perfection!! But it came with the side of the fries...so, near perfection. In the end, I'm just glad to have found this pub!! I hated walking around and around looking for just SOMETHING to eat/drink. Stumbling upon JJ Foley's was like stumbling upon a pot of gold. With show lights. And maybe a halo.

Every time I come here I instantly want to leave. Music is kind of loud, but there is no dancing. If there is dancing I can understand having loud music... Crowd is usually older/doesn't seem too friendly. Maybe a decent spot for drinks after work, but I wouldn't go here on a weekend night.

Does the fact that I'm not a "bar person" make my opinion more valuable or less? This place is fantastic. I came by the other night to meet a friend from out of town--the classic use of a bar. I chose this place partly because I had had a roommate who worked at the other Foley's and praised it to the sky. But this location is the one that was close to AT LEAST three train lines (Red, Orange, and Green) and practically parked on top of Downtown Crossing. Now, unfortunately, my friend misunderstood our meet-up details so I got to sit alone and wait for a spell. The up-side is that I really got to take in the surroundings. And what nice surroundings they were! The space was cozy-yet-spacious. The bartenders were sarcastic-but-not mean. The drinks were strong and tasty. The jukebox had no noise or faddish crap, just classics playing at exactly the right volume. The other patrons were cool. No one was trying to start an argument or get in a fistfight. Everyone was just having a good time. Bathrooms: Clean! Like I said, I don't usually seek out bars. But I can't wait to go back to Foley's. It's everything I like about bars; no more, no less.

This is an awesome, old-school bar with sweet stuff on the jukebox at all times. I love that the bartenders are dressed in old style whites with aprons, and the lighting is low, the decor is very old-fashioned, and you just feel at home and ready to relax with a beer. When we headed out the door the guy at the door thanked us for coming, told us he appreciated our business and asked us to come back again soon! When does THAT ever happen in Boston? I'll definitely be back.

I would give J.J. Foley's 4 stars if I didn't have one of the worst Reubens I've ever had. Let me elaborate. My friends and I came to J.J. Foley's for a bite to eat in between beer tours/tastings. We were all mildly tipsy and the only place I could think of that had food and beer in the area that was open was J.J. Foley's. I knew it was kind of a dive-ish Irish pub since I had been there once before for drinks. We walked in and the charming Irish bartender immediately started joking with us and seated us. The service was impeccable... probably because there were very few people in a divey Irish bar on Saturday at 2 pm. We all ordered a round of beers. Most of the people I was with ordered the pastrami sandwich. I ordered the Reuben. The Reuben was pretty bad. It was certainly the worst I've had. The corned beef itself was really good, but they forgot to put on the Swiss cheese (which is the whole point of a Reuben!) and there was a smattering of sauerkraut and Russian dressing... hardly enough to taste it. Everyone in my party loved their sandwiches and rumor had it the fries were good so it was probably just a fluke with mine. I would give this place four stars if my food had been better.

JJ Foley's is a bar and pub in the South End. The food is decent for bar food if you are getting the usual burger and fries, onion rings, or other appetizers. They try to make other entrees but I would stick to the regular bar food, as the entrees are not always very good. I was particularly unimpressed with the fish tacos. The sweet potato fries, however, are very good. They also have half priced appetizers from 4-6 M-Th which is a draw. The atmosphere is good for hanging out and having a relaxed beer with your friends. They have trivia every Tuesday night which is really fun for a group. The staff is pretty good, but the waitresses are a little less helpful toward the end of shift. I was a little unimpressed by the fact that I had asked to have my food wrapped up and they only wrapped up the rest of my sandwich and not my fries. The bar is attached to the restaurant and is open until 2 am. It's usually a decent sized crowd, especially later in the night on Fridays and Saturdays, but you can usually get a table or at least share one with a couple of other people. They play top 20s but it's not really a place for dancing. They have a decent list of draft beers and a few wines in addition to regular mixed drinks. All in all I would say it's a good bar if you're in the area and are craving pub food or a place to sit and have a drink, but don't go out of your way to check out this restaurant. It's definitely not toward the top of my list for Boston's best food.

Well, since my previous review was flagged for lack of first-hand experience I will write a little bit about my times at JJ Foleys. It's nothing special, kind of dark, dank and smelly. I will give them a thumbs up for their french fries and cheap, strong drinks but it's a pretty typcial Irish pub. There's nothing really special about it... oh except that it's owned by a bunch of disgusting homophobes who kick out gay men for kissing.

This place is kind of dead on a weekday night. I went here really late, about 1am with some friends. There were like 5 other people in here. I guess it was late on a Wednesday night. Kind of had that "old man bar" type of feel to it. I felt young, I might try to go on another night to see if it is happening any other times during the week.

Fantastic dive bar. The most friendly bartenders ever, I love them. You get what you expect here and that's good. The food is priced fair and your standard pub food. Coats the belly for the beer! They have a juke and big buck hunter - what more can you ask for in a dive bar?

I think they have the best Guinness is town. It's always in a proper Imperial pint glass. It's poured the right temp in the right amount of time. Their pints are also a great price. I've never eaten here. My review is purely on the Guinness.

In Boston for a friend's commencement, I was looking to stay away from the *posh* eateries/lounges of Newbury/South End. I wanted to lay-low, grab a beer at a cool, unpretentious spot and chill out with my friends. JJ Foley's is one of these places. It was a Saturday night, about Midnight but the place was mellow and laid-back. It's a great place to come after dinner and end the evening. The bartenders recognized my friends and we were warmly greeted by an older gentleman dressed in white business shirt, black tie, and black pants with a thick Boston/Irish/Southie accent (all rolled into one, I think). All bartenders wear the same outfit, which gives the place a dash of authentic Old World flair. Service was prompt and friendly. In addition to the bar area, you can sit on booths with access to TV monitors (standard at most Boston bars). The music was a mix of 80s/90s played at comfortable levels to enjoy and carry a decent convo with friends. My friends are HUGE Guinness fans and this is one of their favorite spots. Overall, I enjoyed the vibe enough to return. I didn't pay for any of my drinks, so sadly can't comment on pricing.

Realistically, if the Foley clan put 2% of the money they make back into this place, it would be an easy five star rating for me. But apparently these Foley's are more content living large off my alcoholic needs. Anyway, here's the review...and as always, I tell it like it is.... Good beer selection. They have the normal's, Guinness, Harpoon, Sam Adams, Hoegarden, etc... , but they also keep a couple cheap drafts ($2.50) like PBR and Coors light on hand for the locals. And while most of the bartenders are jerks, they do seem to work hard while they're there. The bar itself has a decent setup with a spacious front and back room. The back room is about 8 high stool tables, and 8 low ones. The woman's bathroom is conveniently located way the f*ck in the back, and the awful guys bathroom is located way the f*ck in the front. The Jukebox is pretty good, although the bartenders seem to get a little power hungry with the volume control behind the bar. The biggest issue is that there are only like 3 TV's in the place. With the amount of money Mr Foley is pocketing per night, there should be at least 6 in the back room alone. That's just laziness or greed on his part. The food is pretty good, although the kitchen closes early. Foley's has two significant rush hours - one at 5:00 right after work - and then another @ about 1 AM. The good news about Foley's is that you can always get a beer @ 1:59 AM on a weekend night (sometimes later).

I made a Yelp account just to rate JJ Foley's, a friend who lives in Boston brought me there often when I visited, so my brother and I went before a show at the Wilbur to wait out the three hours before the performance. The barman at this establishment is and has been on all of my visits the coolest barman in Boston. Amazing service, he has a great sense of the bars atmosphere at all times, and total control over it. You feel safe, comfortable, and most importantly welcomed. Service was spot on, and he ran that place with total ease and a great sense of humor. As far as a pub goes, I wish I lived closer to make this my weekend home, I will be going back, I will be bringing friends and pub friendly family with me anytime. Thanks again JJ Foley's, you as always exceeded my hospitality expectations.

I have been here a couple of times. I have always only been here for booze, never food. Ambiance is decent. The bar staff is friendly. They have a juke box with a large selection of tunes. Similar to Biddy Early's juke box. Drinks are relatively affordable for the location. They have neat chalk drawings of the bartenders on a board behind the bar. Kind of creative. It is always a good place to hit up if Good Life is too packed or you do not want to wait in a line for drinks.

Hands down, will always be one of my favorite pubs in Boston. Five stars for the ambiance, incredibly friendly staff, good beer selection and great juke box. I don't go out nearly as often anymore, but still get here occasionally (three times so far this year, though before that it had been 2-3 years) - haven't tried the food yet; when I was spending the most time here there was no kitchen (pre-renovations). I've always thought of Foley's as the true "where everybody knows your name" spot. It's not quite the same as before the pre-smoking ban days and pre-renovations, but this place is still Foley's and still my fave. I actually think they did a decent job of preserving the vibe post-renovations. To another reviewer who complained that there were not enough TVs... perhaps you need to find yourself a good sports bar in the area. Foley's is not that kind of place - people come here for a different reason. P.S. Though I know they still have a juke box, I'm reading in others' reviews that the old juke box is gone, and I must admit I haven't played anything on the juke box there in the last few years. That's a bit of a bummer, I must admit, if it's true. I will check it out the next time I am there. They used to have the best juke box in Boston.

I cannot recommend this place enough, though that may partly be because I was half drunk when I arrived. If you are looking to break up a day of drinking with, well, lunch and more drinking, this is the spot to go. Although almost abandoned during the weekend daylight hours, this old school pub has more charm than a suit and tie Antonio Banderas. The friendly and sociable service from our waiter and bartender was what really sells me on this place, making me feel as if we'd come here for years. Their ablity to delude us with local stories and anecdotes define themselves from a faceless sea of Boston food service people. We weren't expecting much food wise from and old Boston pub, but we were pleasantly surprised. Though the grilled chicken sandwich is nothing to write home about, the Rueben and hot pastrami sandwich are blog worthy. And the fries deserve a dissertation. If you've looking for a meal while by South Station, skip the food court and get a meal worth your money.

We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The food was decent but we will not be going out of our way to go back. We had a burger and the fish & chips. The fries were soggy and the place had that pub smell from a long Friday night. The beer selection covers all the basics but they don't have anything special. I guess this is more of a bar where you get a shot and chase it down with a cheap light beer after work. The service was standard and it took a while to get our check processed. The staff was friendly and we would probably have fun if it was a stop on a college pub crawl but this is not a nice lunch spot for a date by any means. It was just on the way to where we were shopping, so we figured we would check out a new place but we were not impressed.

This is a great Boston bar. It has a traditional Irish pub feel and a good vibe. There is a always a great mix of regulars and tourists here. The staff is awesome. These guys are friendly, funny and good at what they do. The food is very good also. The bar is easy to get to by public transportation. There are booths and tables as well as the bar. Ask for Savage when you go.

Awk. The Space: I felt like I was in a friend's basement. The Staff: Dressed like Olive Garden servers, but friendly. The Bathrooms: Where's the Men's room? Totes peed in one of the two Ladies rooms I found. The Booze: Beer's tasty I spoze. The Clientele: Mixed bag of business oldies and preppy young adults. Awk. I'd hit it again though, with friends, natch.

I remember coming here because the line for Good Life was insane. My girlfriend said "Hey, I think that's the place where high school kids go to drink!" We walked up to the doorman and he asked us how old we were, we all said 21 and walked in. So yeah, I guess it's where kids in high school go to drink.

Pretty good beer choices, relatively cheap and plenty of places to sit, Foley's is the perfect place to go with your friends if you'd like some discussion with your drinks. There's always music or sports playing, but its never too loud, which can be rare in bars. The weirdest thing always happens here on Fridays and Saturdays, though. You'll be sitting around, drinking with friends, and the place really isn't too crowded. As soon as the clock hits somewhere between midnight and 12:30, Foley's becomes overloaded with people. It happens every time. So make sure you refill right before midnight to avoid the line that is most certainly coming. Also, Internet Jukebox, which is definitely A++.

The only bad thing about J.J. Foley's is figuring out how to get there. With two locations with the same name in Boston, it's often difficult to navigate your way to this side street location on Kingston Street. Once you make your way there, though, you'll be glad you did. J.J. Foley's is more than your typical Irish bar. There's a good group of regulars there, but you can often still find a bar seat or table in the bar area in front of two flat screen televisions. There's a jukebox on the all, and a decent selection of imported beers on tap. It's been a while since Foley's was a hot-spot. Yes, Bono came there after a U2 show to say goodbye to former Boston Globe reviewer Steve Morse, but the place now is basically good for a beer or two and meeting up with friends. I can't comment on the food, as I haven't ever eaten there, but its worth visiting -- at least for old time's sake.

Great beer and a good time, especially on St. Patty's day. Not a bad place to eat either. It is a classic irish bar.

I wasn't here for that long, but if you hadn't noticed.. I'm a sucker for Irish pubs. The beer is good. The bartenders are actually conversational. The place is quiet enough to where you can hold a conversation. I wish I could have stayed for longer, but the kitchen was closed & I was a bit too hungry to stick around.

Went here for MNF to watch the Pats and the Jets game. Game was a lot of fun and service was excellent. The wings were great, but the Fish and Chips left something to desire. I did leave happy though after a few Sam Adam's Winter.

2 dollar PBRs and a slew of kind-hearted insults from the staff. Foley's is love.

lack of tv's? dive bar? Journey and Miller lite? Bar food? Seriously where is the -you just don't get it- button... This bar is an absolute gem in a city of good bars. You kids... get off the lawn.

I've gone to JJ's for about 4 years now. This place is great. As a one time college kid, the cheap drinks were always welcoming to me and my buddies and the same continues through today. The food is alright, nothing to write home about but its also a bar so usually the food isn't anything special. The bartenders here are great as well and you get a good mix of office kids, bike couriers, and older regulars. A great place to bring a group of friends for a night of drinking

I once came here to grab lunch before doing some shopping with friends and I had my meal purchased for me by three friendly, middle aged guys who were just being nice people and doing a good deed. It is for that reason I give Foley's five stars. If I had to pay for it myself, I'd still give it four stars :-).

Puke. That's all I can think about when I think of Foley's. Puke. I've never attended this bar dead sober, nor have I eaten the food, so I'm probably a terrible person to review it, but nonetheless... The clientele pretty much sucks (one time, there was a woman drunkenly sobbing while literally climbing all over her boyfriend at 7 pm on a Thursday night), the interior is boring and I've never found it to be very clean or fun. That said, I'll probably end up there again, but I can't guarantee I won't stand outside most of the time chain-smoking cigarettes and scowling because one of my entourage wanted to go to Foley's instead of someplace cooler.

This place is great! I used to come here for trivia, the bar staff is amazing and the food is pretty good. The drinks are strong, have a martini here.

Like, dude! You TOTALLY spilled Harpoon all over my blue button down. Damn, bro ... the pleats on my khaki's just, um, err ... unpleated??? Hey, man, watch it ... you just bumped into my girl. How can I pop the collar of my Polo shirt when it's wet, dude? What! What! What! These are just a few things you'll hear at J.J. Foley's. Oh, wait. I'm sorry. You won't hear any of these things 'cause it so Goddamn loud. And crowded. And smelly - like moldy beer taps. Yes, they have beer (and a pretty good selection, at that). Yes, there's a good juke box. Yes, the bartenders are really good. Good luck getting to them, though. And, yes, the food sucks and only the immortal or inoculated even attempt to eat here. Don't do it.

It 's a little weird to sit in the back without a thick cloud of smoke obscuring the features of your best friend who's sitting less than a foot away from you. Ah, the memories. Let's go folks!

Had a good time here. The place wasn't packed and the bartender was really nice. I think if you go often, they would remember you. It has a slightly different feel from the South End version only because you can sit in a separate room away from the bar at this location. The South End location has seating at tables placed around the bar.

A friend and I grabbed a burger here after work before heading off to a networking party. We went in and the place was CRAWLING with dudes. It was really unbelievable. Aside from us, there were maybe a dozen women and the place was packed. We found a booth in the back and it took some work to flag down the server. The burger wasn't cooked to my specifications, but they piled on the delicious fries. But the big thing that irked me was the fact that even though we were two cute girls hanging out, not one guy came up to talk to us! They all stayed huddled in their man packs. *sigh* Very typical of Boston, but hey, this is a pretty typical Boston bar. Bostonian men...just go say hello, will ya?
