Best ice cream I have traveled all around the world and had a lot ice cream but the best cake batter and sweet cream ice cream come from here. I also really enjoy the frappes especially the mango and sweet cream frappe. The service is always friendly as the owner always hires high school kids who are passionate about their job.

Definitely a big highlight of my visit was the M&M Cookie Cone with Vanilla Bean ice cream I got here. Ice cream is smooth and flavorful, and the cookie cone was absolutely awesome. I could eat just the cone. I'll definitely visit again.

Not a fan. Their selection was minimal and lacked creativity. Their hot fudge sauce was too dark and concentrated and had a gritty consistency. First and last visit.

I absolutely love this ice cream. Doesn't give you that nauseous post ice cream feeling after you've eaten too much of it :p the hot fudge is AMAZING on vanilla ice cream with a little whipped cream. We live down the street and whenever we try other local shops out, nothing compares. And the young kids are always nice at the counter.

That was the best ice cream I've had in years. Had the bittersweet chocolate sundae, and believe me, it did not suck. This place is pricey but well worth it.

Located in the middle of the always hopping Belmont Center this gem has provided me with many excellent memories, and even better ice cream. While the prices will likely make your jaw drop, you'll almost definitely come back again and again, craving the incomparable sundaes and frappes. It also does't hurt that the staff is very friendly and helpful. (On multiple occasions I've gone in a few minutes before closing time and the employees were more than willing to serve.) Best ice cream around. Best frappes around. Best hot fudge around. Best whipped cream around. Hands down.

I liked it better in its original location. More homey and special. Now it's a modern-feeling ice cream store. Ice cream not as creamy as I like, prices still high, serving sizes seem smaller, but it was good. I wouldn't make a special trip to Belmont to go there. In fact, I was just in Belmont again, and thought it wasn't worth the calories. So I walked-past. Oh well.

I've loved this place since I was a kid, well before they moved to Belmont Center. It was always a tradition to get ice cream cakes there for my birthday - they are the best ever. I went on Mother's Day for the first time in years and I was not disappointed. I got a small cup of Milk Chocolate / Coconut, my mom got a medium cup of Salted Caramel / Hazelnut Creme. Every flavor was wonderful. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it's rather pricey. $9.50 for the two of us! I'm glad it's no longer cash only.

We were strolling around the area and wandered in for some non-soft, non-hard... (perhaps delightfully rough?) froyo. While I enjoyed the flavors from coffee, mocha chip, and hydrox yogurts (I had to try a bunch at once), my companion enjoyed the bittersweet chocolate ice cream. [Flavors are available as ice cream, froyo, or both] Bittersweet for me was how, while the companion reveled in his lack of ice chips, I experienced some in one of my flavors (wah!). What causes this. Perhaps not enough people sharing my love for these flavors? What's not to love? But we were both pleased to find what we wanted at the same place (a feat with regards to cold treats) and that we were able to snag one of the few tables. There's also some fun nostalgic stuff inside and out (eg. old 73 route bus sign). Staff was very friendly.

It's good quality ice cream, but there's not much variety. I went to their web site and picked out coconut, banana, and almond. I was really disappointed to find out that the store actually had none of these. My wife wanted yet another advertised flavor that was absent. We had to settle for plainer fare, which was not exciting. Addition: have since visited the Lexington location, which was busy on warm summer's eve, but also didn't get any good flavors, and there were ice chunks evident in the product. This is not on par with a Kimball Farms or other independent dairy stands of that standard.

Best ice cream in the area! I love the frappes. I usually get cake batter or cookie dough. Yummm

  • Rachel B.

Amazing ice cream, all made in house. The place is always packed but it's worth it. Joe Rancatore is fantastic, but splits his time between Belmont and Lexington. When I was a kid, and the place was on the corner of Belmont and School Street, (and was my neighbor) I was short 20 cents on a cone. While this doesn't seem like much now, it was a big deal to an 8 year old. Joe smiled, covered the difference and said, "pay me back next time." I think I still owe him that 20 cents! For the sports fans, the entire store is totally decked out in boston sports collectibles!

My god. Tiger Milk? I would've had no idea what that was unless a friend told me to try it. And MY GOD it is the best thing I've ever tasted. They take milk that was soaked with frosted flakes (you know, the sweetest goodness in the world that you have to glug down after you finish your cereal?) It is heaven in ice cream form. And the hydrox is a oreo combo which is out of this world. Better than ANY oreo ice cream I could dream of. Outstanding. It's good this place isn't closer to me because I would be morbidly obese if it were.

The ice cream here is horrible. It tastes watery and old (like it was made months ago). I also found pieces of hair in my scoop multiple times. I will not being going back ever again. This store is a disgrace.

  • Tamarleigh G.

Very clever flavors, delicious, and great service. In particular, a young man whose name I think was Will was especially helpful given my food allergy. If they had more earthy-crunchy options (organic, vegan, that sort of thing), I'd give them a full five stars. For what it is, though, it's very good.

Quaint, modern scoop shop that seats 12 and enjoys murder. You say? It killed the last remaining TCBY in a 25 mile radius as of Sunday, October 16th. RIP White Chocolate Mousse with gummy bears. Hard frozen yogurt mingles with none-too-exciting flavors, but don't misinterpret; the product is expertly crafted and reasonably priced. Love the tiny touches - flavors held up by magnetized chrome chip clips for ease of rotation, and small batch beverages chilling in the coolers. Both judges agreed the bittersweet chocolate malt edged out the extra-thick milk chocolate frappe, while the pretzel cone showed promi- Hold the phone. Yes, a pretzel cone. This and other gourmet offerings come from The Cone Guys out of PA, and you better believe I'll be diving headlong in to the salty-sweet combo on my next visit. A visit that'll likely result in a fifth star. Go Belmont!

Back in Belmont, and reminded once again that Rancatore's is just delightful. Boston has the best ice cream anywhere in the country, and Ranc's is at the top of the heap. The ginger ice cream is some of the most intense ice cream I've had, and the frozen yogurts are no lightweights...worth doing. My only complaint? I wish it were just a little cheaper since it's a decent chunk of change for four ice creams, although I don't begrudge them for that since I hope they're always around whenever I'm back in town.

  • Krissy K.

Although Rancatore's was tied for third (aka last) in my rankings of the ice cream places I visited, I still liked it a lot. The service was great, and I enjoyed the my cup. Feeling festive, I also opted for hot fudge, and I do think it enhanced the taste experience. This place is a little cramped, but we were still able to get seating without much fuss. A nice spot in Belmont.

  • R S.

Good ice cream (on par with JP licks). However, it's a rip off. They charge 75c for jimmies when most places charge nothing. Their cones were tiny and the servers did not push the ice cream into the cone at all to secure. Finally, they strong arm you into giving a tip. The ice cream is not good enough for the bad overall experience. I would highly recommend going to Cabot's or JP licks instead.

  • Silvia V.

I like Ranc's on Leonard Street more than when it was on Belmont Street. Favorite ice cream flavors are: pistachio and coffee. P.S. We recently discovered saffron ice cream, which tastes very much like Persian ice cream and it instantly became our new favorite.

  • Dianne L.

It is nice to have a local ice cream store that has a hard frozen yogurt option rather than soft serve fro yo option only. In the heat that soft serve self destructs in minutes. They have tasty flavors with any of them with chocolate or chocolate add in as my favorite. **** hint**** if your are on a diet you can get the hard yogurt in a waffle cone and not feel like you are being cheated at all. This is my little trick when I am watching the calories but craving a sweet treat!

Hmmm ... taking care of a friend's two year old while mommy is at a doctor's appointment. How do I handle the two hours? Sugar the baby up, that is how I handle it and then take her to the park to work it off and then hand her back to mommy. I will admit it - her love was for sale and I wanted it, so ice cream it is. Just got her a basic vanilla, but the cake batter is favorite with my kids. I am a fan of their mint chocolate chip (real mint!) and the coffee. BTW, if you do get the coffee do not get a night, it is so strong it will keep you up most of the night :)

  • Andrew D.

So this is a 5 star rating for the one flavor I tried: Frosted Flakes. My wife and I went to the Best of Boston Burger Event and the best thing we had was this ice cream. I actually had three servings with strawberries while I was there. I wish this place was close to my house!

  • LOIS T.

Frequently I wish that there is a man working because the pints are very expensive and the women don't pack it well enough and a pint is not a full pint. The containers for the hot fudge are not good and it can leak out. The ice cream is very good however.

  • Roscoe R.

Ranc's ranks! Joe and his brother Gus (of Toscanini's fame) are ice cream superheroes. I was sad to see Ranc's move from its more spacious location to more cramped quarters in Belmont Center. And I'm not sure, but I THINK they have fewer flavors available at any one time, due to limited space (I could be wrong about that). It's expensive ice cream, but you won't be disappointed by the quality. If you're comparing Ranc's to Tosci's, then I'd give Tosci's the edge. The quality of the ice cream is similar, but Tosci's has a much greater and more creative variety of flavors.

    (4)
  • Priscilla K.

A little disappointed. To me one of the flavors (we got 2) tasted of refrigerator, maybe not too fresh. The fresh flavor was good enough. Service not too friendly, just neutral. I guess I'm ruined by Richardson's.

  • Telesthetic T.

A convenient ice cream shop in Belmont. I had a good experience in that I left happy after eating the ice cream. But putting on a critic's hat, I can say (a) the choice of flavors was relatively diverse but not so much as I would prefer (e.g. mostly chocolate/nut variants and combinations and not so many fruits), (b) the technical quality of the ice cream is quite good but not the best. For my taste buds, a place like JP Licks is much better along both axes. Having said that, this place is very good and I doubt you will leave it feeling grumpy or dissatisfied in some deep sense.

My group really wanted to try this joint, and so we came in. Retro/modern decor served to remind one of an updated 1960's diner, with chromes and colours to match. The ice cream was both creamy and fresh, bursting with fragrance and flavour. It's solid, and not really overpriced, given the quality of their primary wares. It's a great way to spend a summer, nibbling on this sweet, rich, "oh I'm going to have to go run now!" ice cream...

  • Michaela M.

Delicious! Everyone in our party ordered a different flavor. My fiance is a pistachio ice cream connoisseur and he said it was among the best he has ever had! I had trouble choosing from all of the flavors. On impulse I got the mocha chip frozen yogurt which was amazing. It was very creamy with big square chunks of chocolate. It really tasted more like ice cream than frozen yogurt. The small dishes were anything but small; very generous portions! A must stop!

First off, the shop is clean and has a pleasant interior. They have a Steve Grogan jersey hanging on the wall - awesome! What I really love about Ranc's is the different types of cones they offer. In addition to the typical sugar and waffle cones, they have cones made of COOKIES (chocolate, chocolate chip, M&M) and a PRETZEL cone?! I haven't tried the pretzel, but I imagine it would be great with some type of caramel swirl ice cream flavor. On my last visit, I had an M&M cookie cone with chocolate chip ice cream and chocolate jimmies, which I devoured. Pairing cookies and ice cream is irresistible (e.g., cookies 'n cream, chipwiches, etc.); making the cone a cookie is genius. Their frozen yogurt is also quite good. I had the almond chocolate chunk. The flavor was excellent (though none can compare to the creaminess of Richardson's fro-yo). I've been to the shop when the line's been out the door, and I must give kudos to the staff for moving things along so quickly and efficiently - and with a positive attitude too.

A good ice cream/frozen yogurt joint in Belmont Center. Good selection of flavors and they have a interesting variety of cones. I tried a chocolate chip cookie cone, which was very tasty. Staff was friendly, the prices were good, and the flavor selection was pretty standard. They sell the type of frozen yogurt that tastes more like ice cream.

Ranc's chocolate ice cream can comfort the distressed, alleviate pain, and stand in for several anti-depressants if you have lousy medical insurance. During the summer, I tend to make a weekly pilgrimage: When everyone else goes to church, I'm slurping a Hydrox frappe at Ranc's. Amen.

Good not great. Overpriced. I liked that the ice cream/yogurt was less creamy than other places. Slow service.

One of my favorite things about Ranc's is that you can get a small ice cream with two flavors without having some kid smirk at you for being a pain in the neck. And the ice cream is pretty good, too. Two of my favorites are pistacchio (with real nuts and not colored green) and cake batter. I've always found the staff friendly and it has a low-key local feel. My only complaint is that they don't offer Reese's Peanut Butter Cups as a topping and sometimes they run out of waffle cones. It never seems really busy when I've gone in. They could make it a bit more cafe-like as an alternative to Starbucks. I wouldn't really trust an espresso drink since I'd be afraid the beans probably don't rotate that much and I've never heard anyone order a drink.

  • Eric T.

Awesome home-made ice cream. Although the flavor variety doesn't seem to change too often, everything they have is great!! Get the blueberry ice cream when it's available...mmm! Woohoo for summer time!! Only complaint is I wish they had more seating, and the prices are slightly above average, but you get what you pay for. :)

  • Alison F.

Excellent ice cream. Always has some version of vanilla and chocolate, also almost always cookies and cream (here: "Hydrox"). True, it's a smaller place and so it doesn't have 31 flavors or even always the same flavors (family favorite: gingersnap molasses!). Sizes are relatively small for the price compared to Chilly Cow in Arlington, for example, but not smaller than JP Licks in Davis Sq. And, unlike the Rancatore's in Lexington (which I will never visit), the young staff here are extremely friendly. Don't know what they're doing differently, but I love it. A great, friendly place for fabulous ice cream. As for parking in Belmont Ctr: it's really not that big a deal if you're willing to walk as many as 50 meters.

  • Mark O.

I was definitely going to give Ranc's 5 stars but after reading the reviews I had to agree with a few points. I would give them 4.5 stars. First, though, this is great, great ice cream. I'm a crazy flavor guy and Ranc's has them in spades. Kulfi is great, so is coconut, so is butter pecan, etc. I do think they are a little pricey - I often get the frappe because it seems to be a pretty good deal. also, I have had some iciness in their frozen yogurt, I don't know if this is normal or not because I don't usually get yogurt. Finally, they could do a little better with the cleaning, I understand that ice cream is messy and Ranc's is much cleaner than most parlors, but it really needs to be immaculate... all the time. Bottom line though it that they serve ice cream and it's near the top of what Boston has to offer, which is saying a lot.

This place has become my vice. I don't smoke or drink anymore, and I think that this place is going to kill me. At least it will be with a smile! Seriously though, it's one of the best ice cream shops around. And in this area, there are a few to compete with, including Bedford Farms. Toscanini's and even Kimball's in Westford. Ranc's is a perfect blend of flavors, without being overly sweet or overly creamy and heavy. Hands down, they are my favorite. And it doesn't hurt that they are literally down the street from my house.

I stepped into RANC'S early this afternoon for the very first time in their new location on Leonard Street in Belmont. I stepped out with a new favorite ice cream place. The first thing that sold me on this place was the homemade ice cream. I have always been a fan of homemade ice cream. In addition, I was impressed with the incredibly friendly and up-beat nature of the owner, the cleanliness of the store, and the variety of (unique) flavors on the menu. I had no problem accepting the owner's offer to taste several of the ice-creams/frozen yogurts - one right after the other (gingersnap, chocolate mousse, and then mango). If you're "adventurous" with your ice cream flavors, take a rest from the vanilla and chocolate for a moment and try the Khulfee ice cream. I tasted it, loved it, and took it to go! Cardamom as an ice cream flavor is excellent!! Good luck with the new location RANC'S!

  • Michael G.

Love Yelp! Yelped this place to right a review and found that there is a new location even closer to my house. This place is definitely up there among the best of the best Ice cream places around. Everything is fresh, homemade, and delicious. Great Ice cream, service, and prices. Cant go wrong with Ranc's!

  • Brian F.

Wonderful kulfi ice cream loaded with cardamom. Pistachio ice cream had perhaps too subtle of flavor, but the quality of the nuts was especially high, and the ice cream was creamy without being too sweet. In both cases the ice cream was a couple of degrees too cold.

    (4)
  • Jeff E.

Are you kidding me!? This is the best ice cream I have ever had in my life. The sweet cream is totally awesomely simple, and the hot fudge is so good it must have some sort of drug in it.

  • Chris W.

I stopped in here the other day with my roommates as we were on our way back from home depot. We all got frappes. One vanilla, one coffee, one chocolate, and one hydrox. The young woman behind the counter was very friendly and answered all our questions. She also gave one of my roommates a sample of everything he asked for, which was more than a few! All I have to say is that my chocolate frappe was great, the hydrox, however, is on some next level sh*% Go experience it for yourself!

First of all, I just have to say that Rancatore's has some of the best ice cream my husband and I have ever had!! We were just married this past July, and one of our last-minute decisions was to have ice cream served with our cake. During what was already a very busy and somewhat stressful time, working with Joe Rancatore was a breathe of fresh air! His great personality and friendly approach to business was a huge help to us and knowing that he had the details down was a huge relief to us. On the day of our wedding, our ice cream was delivered on-time to our wedding venue and I have got to say, it was a HUGE hit with ALL of our guests!! For what we consider to have been a VERY reasonable cost, we were able to offer our guests extravagant flavors of delicious ice cream that actually impressed them! There was definitely a buzz of excitement about how great dessert was! We were happy to tell our guests where we got the ice cream from and I know of several of our guests who have since made the drive out to a Rancatore's for a scoop! Great ice cream for a great price and a cost-effective way to make any event a little more exciting - They even give you sleeves of cups and utensils if you need them!

For those of you Belmontians who haven't given in to a craving for Rancatore's out-of-this world ice cream in the past month, here's a news flash. Ranc's has relocated from Belmont Street to Leonard Street in downtown Belmont. That's good news for pretty much everyone, except the owners of the TCBY across the street ... The new location has all of the great ice cream flavors that you know and love, but it is a little on the wee side. I stopped in to pick up some take-home ice cream for my wife the other day, and had to practically fight my way to the fridge, then to the register. Oh well, that's the breaks.

  • Brendan R.

This is my favorite ice cream place. The cocoa joel is my favorite. Get it with the homemade hot fudge...if you like chocolate, you won't regret it! The staff is friendly. My only complaint is that they do not always have cocoa joel available.

    (5)
  • Ben E.

I got the Cocoa Joel. It was ridiculous; a blend of milk and dark chocolate ice cream with chocolate chunks and Hydrox pieces. Overkill? Absolutely. Amazing? Unbelievably so. It had a fluffiness to it that made it almost like mousse. The variety was a little limited, but they also let you sample flavors. Excellent ice cream.

  • Moxie C.

Visiting on a sunny friday afternoon during vacation week might not have been the best idea if I wanted to avoid a crowd, but the ice cream was totally worth it. The place is small - about seating for 12 in the front of the shop - so expect to take it to go, but the staff is super-friendly and they really are more than happy to let you sample as many flavours as you need to in order to figure out what to order. And best of all, I love the fact they have a micro-sized version! This guarantees we'll be coming back soon and often!

  • Larry P.

Hey all, I thought my favorite ice creams were from Christina's in Cambridge though after discovering Ranc's after recently moving nearby, their bittersweet chocolate is seriously the best ice cream I have EVER had! The secret is out. If you like chocolate...... forget it, I don't want them to run out!!!

This place is amazing. One of my favorite ice cream places anywhere. Always one of my first stops when I visit the Boston area.

    (5)
  • Jillian Q.

Two words: ICE CHUNKS When there are ice chunks in my ice cream it upsets me. It's happened to me more than once at Rancs lately and the general consensus is that it means the ice cream has been kept in the freezer too long. I used to love coming here when I was younger, but I just don't want to chance crunching on my ice cream when nothing in it should crunch. I really just couldn't give it the dreaded "one star" though - the hot fudge is decent.

I was excited to go here after reading on yelp that the owners of this place and Toscanini's are brothers. I love Toscanini's but I have to say that the ice cream at Ranc's just wasn't quite as good. Something about the texture wasn't quite right, a little bit gritty. Also, they didn't have as many unique flavors as Toscanini's . I had a medium cup of Heath Bar, Cake Batter and Malted Hydrox Cookie and it wasn't what I had hoped for. Just didn't have the "wow" factor for me.

It was such a great day yesterday, had to cap it off with some ice cream. In Belmont, that mean's Ranc's... Always a good variety of flavors. Had my favorite flavor and was not disappointed. However... there is always a however in these things right???? While it is only ice cream, and not anyone making a sandwich... the place was kind of sloppygroady... maybe just because it was a busy day or something. did not expect it to be like an operating room, but it almost looked like there was an ice cream food fight behind the counter.... not to be a spoilsport on this next comment... the place was full of kids... that's good!, but there was not a parent to be seen and the kids were slightly out of control, I would have liked to sit down with my ice-cream, but the atmosphere was just too noisy and rowdy for such a small place. I wish the counter help would have asked the kids to tone it down a bit...But by and large I'll always come back for the best ice cream around!

  • KittyCat G.

So yummy. We are fans of the coffee and espresso flavors, and the GrapeNut Raisin, and the hydrox, and the sweet cream, and oh the ginger. The hot fudge sundaes are delish!!! And now they take credit cards. I wonder if their ice cream is made from organic milk/cream. I have been reading about rBGH and it's effects on IGF-1 and links to cancer. Yikes! I just tried to reach them on their website, but the site was down...

My sister is visiting from Oakland next month, and she's already talking about going to Rancs. Same folks as Toscanini's. Great frozen stuff, and terrific iced coffee. They need to address the disorganized staffing. This place would be a killer destination for coffee, if they spiffed it up a bit, expanded the coffee selection, and hired some motivated staff. Just saying. Oh, and add some more baked goods. Then you'd cover mornings and evenings. They'd capture a bunch of morning commuters.

The ice cream is the best. They seem to have an army of teens working behind the counter. The ice cream selection change almost every day.

  • Minda H.

This is the second negative ice cream review I've written. People are going to think I'm an ice cream Nazi, but really folks, just trying to help you out. I didn't like it. The ice cream is gritty (ice grit rather than ice cream, actually), and my dark chocolate ice cream tasted like a fudgesicle. I understand that there are a lot of folks that grew up buying fudgesicles from the ice cream wagon and so such flavors might be reminiscent of childhood happiness, but I was a StarPop kind of girl, so all I wanted to do with this gritty-fudgesicle-in-a-cup was throw it away. The melted marshmallow topping saved the day, however, because when the friends we were with (who raved and raved about Rancs on the way there) asked how I liked the ice cream, I was at least able to give kudos to the melted marshmallow, making it SEEM like the whole experience was enjoyable. Which it wasn't. To top it all off, the place was crowded, not enough seating either inside or out, and mess (napkins, melted ice grit, straws, etc.) everywhere.

Rancatore's is a trip for all five of your senses: Taste: Hard frozen yogurt at only 120 calories per serving. Hearing: Friendly young staff who actually talk with you. Touch: Cool brick wall / Handwritten signs for flavors. Sight: Happy people licking drippy, delicious ice cream. Humor: Bulletin board with smack-talk written all over the ads: "If your a drug user loser, call 781-894-xxxx" or "I like cock". It's precious. I had the Hydrox yogurt, and it was great. The yogurt wasn't nearly as heavy and rich as ice cream, but knowing that it was approximately 2x better for me made me like it even more. Plus, at just over 1.5 miles from my house, I can justify a stroll down the block to grab a cone.

Something about this store screams 1994 to me. I can't explain it. This isn't a bad thing, but bright, primary colored decor against a bare brick background? I just want to break out my dial-up modem and watch "Aaah!!! Real Monsters!" Since nobody goes to an ice cream store for the atmosphere, it's pretty irrelevant. I don't find the ice cream here as creamy as Herrell's or as flavorful as Christina's. That said, I had a delicious Belgian chocolate flavored micro sundae. The hot fudge was only okay, but the whipped cream and ice cream were quite yummy. I'd say that I got my money's worth on the sundae, which is more than I can say for some Cambridge stores. The real reason they jumped from 3 to 4 stars is that the woman behind the counter not only let me try 5 flavors, she suggested flavor pairings that were complementary. Is there an ice cream version of a sommelier? Well, there should be.

What's not to like? I'd always rather support a local place than a big chain, and it's great for ice cream. We like to walk the dog down here on summer evenings. What I like best is that they have small sized frappes--good on the wallet and the body. We love frappes, but they're so terrible for you, and the small size is just enough to enjoy it without totally going overboard...plus you can walk in with $8 and walk out with 2 small frappes. I wish they took credit cards, but the cash-only bit seems to be pretty common among ice cream places like this, so I'll forgive them--remember, you only need to scrounge up a few singles to get a small dish or frappe!

Best ice cream in Boston area, maybe anywhere

This place is #1 in the Boston area for both their ice cream and there hot fudge. First the ice cream: The flavors are invientive, but not crazy, (like when Toscanini's decides to make five flavors one one week containing paprika). Always fresh and yummy! Pineapple ice cream has actual chunks of (gasp) pineapple. What a concept. The hot fudge.: The best I've ever had. From anywhere. What's really yummy is having hot chocolate made from warmed milk and a table spoon of Ranc's hot fudge.Yuuuuuuuuum! Only criticism is that they need to open another place in a better location like Cambridge or Brookline.

My first visit to Rancatore's and certainly not my last. Never visited the old location, which was more convenient to my house, but this one is not that much further, certainly worth the few blocks more. The best part was three words: Zagnut ice cream. Having never heard of a Zagnut Bar before (how could I have missed this) I just had to try it. Sample was good, scoop was even better. My other scoop was Hydrox ice cream, way better than Oreo. At first I thought the prices were a bit high, up there with JP Licks, but hah, I realized I was looking at the prices for the sundays, not the cups. They have the obligatory ice cold water fountain for after ice cream ice cold thirst quenching and the servers are cute in an underage HS kind of way. Just what I expected from the local ice cream parlor.

This place is killer. I'm an ice cream snob and I can't get enough of this place. The Chocolate Mousse yogurt is fantastic and the hot fudge is to die for! Their whipped cream is homemade. The staff is always friendly and nice. They have hydrox flavored ice cream that is great and I would also recommend the cake batter. Delicious.

I can't think about Rancatore's and not think about High School, and I mean that in a good way. Rancatore's a Belmont institution. I do not believe there is a single person who grew up in Belmont and did not know someone who worked at Rancatore's, if they didn't work their themselves. It's the thing to do after a night time school event. First dress rehearsal for the underclassmen play is over? Let's go to Ranc's. Choral concert's over? Let's hit Ranc's. Bored on a warm summer night? Ranc's. The place feels friendly and fun, and much of that comes from the social atmosphere created by all of the high school patrons. The ice cream is good with decent variety, but I wouldn't be holding your breath for 31 flavors. It's a nice place to kill some time, have a conversation and maybe run into a friendly face. The one major criticism Ranc's recieves is that it's prices are a bit high for the quantity you reciev. Not outragous, but more than some of the local competitors and that is often why some may choose to go elsewhere. On a high schooler's budget, some time that extra dollar really counts. You shouldn't forget where you come from, and Ranc's serves as a nice reminder. Even years after high school, stepping back into Ranc's makes me feel right at home.

The ice cream here is pretty remarkable, I was surprised how good it. I got medium sized vanilla with butterscotch and fluff, it was an awesome combination of flavors. The flavor options seemed to be a little light, but the ice cream itself is really exceptional compared to most of the ice cream I have had around this area. They sell aversion of a Boston Cooler here which I was not expecting to see on the menu since it's origins are from Michigan and was not named after the city of Boston. I may try it some at some point but the idea was drinking a Boston Cooler in Massachusetts is a little weird.

The ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt are all wonderful: even consistency, inventive flavors, and great presentation. The people who work there are friendly and know about the product...they are also thoughtful about the way they serve it to you! As a parallel universe bonus: They also happen to have the only under 25 staff that is 'fully operational' in the greater Boston area. Actually I think they are actually much younger, which makes this closer to a sacred grotto whence miracles recur on a regular basis. The space is exactly what this kind of joint should be...so they get a full 5 star rating. I think it's weird that they have no bathroom, BUT I could not take any stars away since they devised and placed a squeezed-together-legs logo onto the external entryway window with a ~'no bathroom sorry' comment beneath it.... Perhaps there should be no soiling of a sacred space anyhow.

Very good ice cream -- best in the Watertown/Belmont area. Can't understand how people would like Celebrity or Brighams better -- they each server artifically green mint chocolate chip (I'm a mint chip snob). Sundae's are great with fresh whip cream & hot fudge. Good selection of homemade flavors, but usually not too exotic. Also, they rotate frequently so you can't count on the same flavor being there every time (like the aforementioned mint chip). As others have mentioned it is pricey ($10 for 2 sundaes) but I'm very glad there is a good ice cream place in my new neighborhood. Sometimes gets a little crowded on hot summer nights, but the mostly high school age staff is friendly and usually on the ball.

I grew up 2 blocks from Rancatore's and remember the day that Joe opened the store. Not only was I excited to have an ice cream shop within walking distance, but one owned by a rabid Boston sports nut. I loved how the walls were decorated with SI covers... A lot has changed but the quality of the ice cream has not. I still think that Rancatore's makes exceptional ice cream. Sure, their flavors are not as wacky as Ben & Jerry's, and they don't have any weird creations like Cold Stone Creamery. But they make great ice cream.

Just a quick note to say that Ranc's has moved to Belmont Center, on Leonard Ave across from Starbucks. The new place is higher-traffic, really a perfect location, even though it's smaller. I was there on opening day, got a dish of coconut ice cream plus hot fudge, as good or better than before! Highly recommended.

I live right across the street and the only reason I don't go in every day after work is because I never have any cash on me. Otherwise... The owner is the brother of Toscanani's owner, so this family knows its ice cream. The flavors are fairly basic, but the taste and texture is spot on. It is a little pricey and you can certainly get something very similar in a gallon of Edy's, but there is nothing like stepping out in a hot summer night for an ice cream cone. And in the winter, try the hot chocolate - hot fudge sauce mixed with milk and steamed. Nothing is better. I think it is a four star place, but the last star comes from the fact that they are open 7 days a week until 11; there when the carving hits.

They've got really nice high school kids working here. The ice cream - meh. I always get one flavor, and then on the walk home, wish I had gotten a different flavor. But then when I imagine how I would have felt about my ice cream with the different flavor, I imagine that I would have been dissatisfied with that flavor as well. I'm not crazy about their flavors. I guess ice cream joints either get it or don't get it. This one sort of doesn't get it. But it is near my house - and nothing tops off a drunken BBQ like the whole crew walking up the street together to get ice cream cones together at the end of the night. I dunno, maybe I just haven't found my flavor yet. Maybe I should walk the other direction to Celebrity soft serve...

Just when I think Ranc's can't get any better, another new flavor wow's me. The hazelnut choc chunk is absolutely delicious (and reminiscent of my favorite hazelnut gelato). And it was fantastic paired with the cherry vanilla cinnamon.

I have not been here in years literally. It turns out they moved from Trapelo Road to Belmont center. I must say I miss the old location and I also remember the old location having several different vanilla flavors that I did not see here. The ice cream is still grand. I really think it's the best ice cream in the area. I got a sundae with home made whipped cream and the cherries on the top were not the marachhino jar kind. They were black cherries. I am giving it four stars instead of five because the sitting area had crumbs all over the seats and we had to go home to eat the ice cream.

I have become so spoiled by having this place down the street from us! The ice cream is so good and homemade, that it's tough for us to go anywhere else anymore!

Delicious homemade ice cream and great chocolate sauce. They will make you a custom ice cream sandwich and I love ice cream sandwiches. Only reason not giving 5 stars is they often run out of flavors and the college kids who work there can be really slow and don't always pay attention. Twice I have placed large orders, once over the phone and once by fax, for multiple pints, sauces and toppings and they messed both orders.

I love you, Rancatore's. Your ice cream is amazing. Your hot chocolate is to die for. Plus, you guys are open pretty late. Service is quick and efficient. One minus - no public bathroom. Oh well.

Ok, so it's been years since I've had frozen yogurt but for some reason the other day I saw it at Rancatore's and I had to have it. It was delicious, super rich and creamy, just like ice cream. It's little pricey but a small is still really big and it's really yummy.

I'm a fan! One of the cleaner ice cream places I've been too, which means a lot to this neat-freak. It doesn't sparkle, but I'm also not afraid to sit at the tables, you know? The ice cream and fro-yo are bomb (yeah, I said it). I've generally had a good experience with the staff, too... they aren't always super-happy but I understand... that was my summer job in high school, too. One of the girls working the counter last night lent us her keyring bottle opener for our bottled Coke, so bonus points for her. I've only been in a few times but so far there has yet to be a huge crowd, and I love to eat my ice cream in peace. The bones of the place are pleasant, too... brick walls, high rafters, and large windows in front. A+ Dunno where this "Private Lot" nonsense is coming from... they don't have one, but there is plenty of free parking on the street. Oh! And they have a nice, though small coffee and herbal tea selection, too!

This would have been 4 stars until last night when my weekly trip to Rancatore's was ruined by some bratty high school kids. I realize that this place is swarming with them and I'm ok with that. But, last night as we were waiting in the line that was almost out the door, a gaggle of kids walked in being led by someone who apparently works there but had the night off. She proceeded to march the gaggle to the front of the line, head around to the back of the counter, and scoop them all free ice cream while we all waited for them to try several different flavors before deciding on one. If you're going to skip line and get free ice cream, at least don't take an hour to decide what you want. Everyone in line was outwardly annoyed. Sure, kids will be kids and sure, my mint chocolate chip with hot fudge was great, but c'mon.

Don't eat here. Really, there's nothing to see. There's no point in you coming here and eating up all the cherry chocolate chip ice cream before I get there. Stay away. I've been thinking about the reviewers here who seem to prefer Brigham's or some other mass-produced stuff to Ranc's. Maybe they're like my mom; she doesn't like ice cream with lots of butterfat that's really dense. I think she's insane. I'd prefer a perfect vanilla to the most creative mass-produced carageenan-filled stuff available. The Boston area is know for truly great ice cream. Ranc's is arguably the best. I find the flavor selection at Toscanini's much more interesting, but you can usually find a decent enough flavor here. However, I think the hot fudge here is MUCH better than at Tosci's. It's hot and chocolaty, but not too sweet and just the right amount of milk to compliment the ice cream perfectly. So to all of you who don't already live nearby... SHOO! STAY AWAY!!

Most people who know me are aware that I'm not a big fan of ice cream--I'm usually pretty apathetic about it. Finally, after two years of my friend hounding me to go there, I went. It has by far been the best ice cream I've had in recent memory. I ordered a small, banana-walnut sundae with hot fudge, whipped cream, and M&M's for almost $6. Another quality that many know about me is that I'm cheap--and I believe it was worth every penny, even taking a little break from my rigorous diet. There isn't much to do in Belmont, but this is absolutely worth taking the trip. You can get there by the 73 bus out of Harvard Square (conveniently at the School St. stop).

Just for the Khulfi (Khulfee) alone this place deserve many stars. It is the best flavor on the planet! The space itself is nothing to write home (or yelp) about, but the staff is good, you can sample till your heart's delight and, most importantly, they make fantastic khulfi!

Bad new location. Like a sardine can in the suburbs. Sadly it detracted from the ice cream experience. We liked it better on Belmont St. I think I'll have to settle for Brighams now because this new location stinks. The cashier is at the end of a funnel it's hard to navigate out while protecting your precious ice cream. Seemed like a bit fewer # flavors my night, but not hugely.

Really four stars, but Ranc's gets a five from me because of the nostalgia factor (having grown up in the neighborhood I was one of Joe's first, and for many years, most regular customers). That said I've been around the world... well outside New England at any rate... and have returned and am still floored by how good his ice cream is. You don't get the range of wacky flavors some joints around here offer, but the ice cream itself is great: perfect creamy texture and nicely balanced flavors. I particularly like the French vanilla.

This is probably the best ice cream place in Watertown, although I have to say in the Boston area I think this is second to Emack and Bolio's. All of the flavors that I have tried have been excellent, and the portion sizes are huge (I usually order one size down from what I would get at another ice cream place). Their frozen yogurt is also the best I've had in Boston (but for some reason they use Hydrox instead of Oreos in their cookies and cream). The decor inside is also very friendly, as are the staff. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit.

I've been going to Ranc's for 14 years now, starting when we lived in Belmont although for the past 10 years we've had to drive across town to get there. It is a single, large, open, natural wood room that I find very warm and inviting. Sure there's no glitz (unless you count plushie parrots hanging from the high ceiling), credit cards (you need credit for ice cream?) or restrooms (pee before you go, man). But it's the best homemade ice cream I've ever had. It's not often very crowded, and the clientele is usually pretty cool. I've always found the staff helpful, friendly and enormously patient with my notoriously indecisive wee ones. Ice cream is the family business at Ranc's; Joe's brother opened Toscanini Ice Cream, but Joe's style is much more relaxed. Last I checked they hadn't even put up a web site. But the ambiance leaves Brigham's in the dust. Parking is no problem on the street or in their lot behind the building.

  • Matthew S.

It's certainly a good ice cream place, but it wasn't anything special. I would probably go here more often if Brigham's wasn't on the way. This seems like the ice cream shop of choice for Belmont transplants.
