Ernest Orleans was quite an experience. Fortunately I was there for a business dinner, so the sticker shock off the menu was not taken personally! Ernest is quite proud of his menu, and after dinner, I can see why! Crab claws are a must have, and any of the fish specials are out of this world. I had a surf and turf with a 4oz filet and a stuffed flounder with shrimp and lump crabmeat in a champagne sauce. It was out-of-this world and perfectly cooked; I seriously cannot recall the last meal I had that was this good...

This restaurant is so good. To me it exemplifies old southern charm, and delicious food. The crab claws are to die for!

Though the food was good and the service was satisfactory the bill was outrageous. Items were misrepresented: upgraded to "special" or larger portions than ordered or desired by anyone at our table but were definitely priced as an upgrade on the bill. Items that seemed complimentary, such as bread, that were served without being ordered were included on the bill at very high prices. The special entree was twice as expensive as any menu entree ($75) though it was similar in content and portion to the regular menu items (grilled fish and 4oz. of steak with a baked potato). The small dinner salad that was served before the entree-and assumed was included in entree price since salads were not ordered-was $18. It ended up being an average dinner with the price tag of over $150 per person (with 1 alcoholic drink). When the bill was disputed Earnest was extremely combative and rude, refusing to adjust the total or remove any charges. In the end it was very dishonest and I felt like I had just been swindled out of a lot of money. Will never return.

One of my favorite places to eat in Shreveport. I've been coming here since I was a little kid. Try their fried shrimp, Ernest Club (steak), and crab claws. Their drinks and food are both expensive. Overall I'd recommend though.

In short, mediocre food, terrible service with a diner ambience. I heard about this place from multiple people and when we could not get the same day reservation at Village, I decided to try this one. The sign of the restaurant says "fine" restaurant but only fine thing that they offered was their wine list. We made a reservation through Opentable and when we arrived, it took some time for the host to locate our reservation because everything they did was paper based although we saw the open table reservation system on their computer in front of us. It wasn't a big deal. I was wearing a skirt and a blouse and felt a bit over dressed when we were seated near the couple with a cowboy hat, jeans and t-shirts. When I looked around, I saw very dressed up people as well as others with shorts and flip flops. Okay, I guess there is no dress code then. The server came and asked if we were ready to order their appetizer (wait! We haven't seen the menu yet). My husband heard good things about the crab claws, so we ordered before we saw the menu. He didn't bring the menu after I asked a couple times, so I had to ask another waiter to do so. By the time we got the menu, our appetizer was arrived. The menu: I thought this was considered at least semi-fine restaurant but the ads on pages and plastic cover reminded me of 24 hour diner. The wine list had good wines including stag's leap, cake bread, and even opus one. We liked what we saw and ordered stag's leap Chardonnay, which was out of stock. Far niente is the one we ended up getting. We noticed that the wine list has not been updated for a while and the vintage we got was 2 years younger than what is listed. When the wine arrived, about 15 min later, we already finished our appetizer and the waiter said "this wine would have gone very well with your appetizer". Hmmm if he gave us the menu like all other restaurant, we would have been able to! The food: red snapper that I ordered was a bit dry and the vegetables were over cooked and mushy. It was $30 and I wan't impressed at all. My husband ordered their famous snapper with crab meat. The fish was slightly overcooked and dry yet the crab meat was well seasoned. Another thing that threw me off was the cheapest cafeteria flat wear and no separate red wine glasses. They offer $350 bottle of Opus yet doesn't have a proper glass? I thought it was odd and disappointing. The server came to us every couple minutes while eating entree and asked for desserts and other things, which made me feel rushed, so I did not enjoy the meal as much as I could have. Thus restaurant has an identity issue in a way. It says "finest" everywhere but service, ambience, and even the table setting did not match. Did I mention their menu with local ads all over??? Oh, i did. I don't understand the hype of this place. Sadly many people might think this is the fine dining... Trust me, it can be so much better.

i told my husband that after sitting at our table for about 10 minutes, i was waiting for ashton kutcher to rush out and tell us we've been punked. we arrived to ernest's for a early dinner just as they opened. we drove up to a place that looked like it was converted to a restaurant from a gas station. the only parking area that we found was a dirt/rocky lot that was slightly downhill from the restaurant. we see a sign for valet parking, but decided to bypass it because it was for the dirt lot on the other side of the restaurant. every where you look, you'll see their catch phrase "serving the finest". and with the waiters in tuxedos, it appeared quite fancy. we walk into the place and was greeted by a owner/host/older gentleman. we were immediately given a "do you have reservations?" look. really?!! (refer to photos) we were seated pretty quickly in the bar area. there were small white cloth tables throughout and a small stage in the corner. i was a little confused about the set up. it looked like the place was being marketed for an upscale affair, but a cheesy cocktail bar at the same time. and the menu...wow...after looking through the selection and prices, you'd think you're sitting in a five star restaurant. most items were $30-50 for seafood, steak, and pasta. we ordered the "famous" crab claws as an appetizer. i'm not sure why they were famous because they were tiny claws buried under some sort of dark cold vinegary salsa. we weren't actually sure what was in it because the room was so dimly lit. i ordered the ribeye and my hubby ordered the gumbo. the ribeye was pretty good, accompanied by a baked potato, and the bowl of gumbo was huge. the gumbo was ok, but looked like a big bowl of mud in the dark. there was a production going on with the bread as each time our waiter asked us if we wanted more, he would return with two in a basket and hold the basket for us take one. it was a little weird. so this is fair warning to those traveling through shreveport and looking for something new to try. our tab was $90 and there were a million places that we could have spent it. like the roulette table.

I had dinner at Ernest's Orleans in mid April of this year (2013). I had heard good things about this restaurant and when I had dinner here, I was disappointed. The food was over priced. The wine selection by the glass was very poor. A Chardonnay and a red table wine by Robert Mondovi was the only wine available by the glass. For a restaurant like this, that is sad:(. The food was decent. But to top it off, the host sat me down at a corner where it was so dark, that my waiter had to lend me his mini flashlight so I can read the menu. My eye sight is average of a 50 year old. Yes, I am 50. I would not come back to Ernest;s Orleans again. Ed E. San Francisco Bay Area

The food was mediocre, but I feel that the hype for this place is too much. It is supposed to be an "old money" type restaurant, but it just looks like an old building that needs to be fixed up. I will give them props for the desserts, but the overall experience was only mediocre at best. Also, there were people there who were not dressed up at all, and I thought this was a dressy restaurant (men wearing kaki pants and a polo or t-shirts).

Food quality was average, service was average, price was high. I hear stories about how wonderful this place used to be. I guess time changes things! We've been once in five years and have no desire to go back.

Dinner was amazing. The staff treated us like family and food was amazing. We had so much food. Not one of us could clean our plates. I had the blackened redfish and it was awesome. Lots of crawfish on top!

  • Tom A.

We went yesterday and for 2 people with a bill well over $100.00 I expected a lot better with the food quality. I had Snapper in a bag and the fish was overcooked (hard). Service was good, but I would rather have bad service with good or great food. Will not go back.

My husband and I made a reservation here on Saturday night. They seated us immediately. The service was excellent. We ordered steaks and they were cooked perfectly. I was really impressed with the atmosphere and service. We also ordered the bananas foster for dessert. They prepared it at the table and it was the best dessert I've ever tasted. Next time we are in Shreveport we will definitely have to return. The only down fall was we ordered sweet tea and they do make sweet tea. They do being you sugar to sweeten the tea. Over all it is an amazing restaurant!!

This place is a bit of a trip - to an era past. It's done in the flavor of a Sinatra era style steakhouse out of the 50's. It also was not a place one might expect to be popular in southern Shreveport, but it works. The food quality is decent, and the prices can range from fair to expensive depending on what you order. It's dark and hard to see so you can't tell how the steaks come out, but they were fine. We had a seafood ponchatrain special ($48), am Ernest's Special Club 10 oz ribeye ($22), and spaghetti and meatballs (massive for $18). We also got live entrainment while dining (pretty good pianist and drummer combo), and we had their dessert specialty - bananas foster served tableside ($12, and worth the show). Overall, a good place for that special night out, but also don't be in a rush here.

Have enjoyed the lunch menu twice and have another reservation coming up. Oyster poorboys as good as N'Awlins'. The caring atmosphere makes each customer feel special, and the food lives up to expectations.

Just far enough away from the "boats" (a.k.a. casinos) to maintain its subtle Texarkana feel, this place is yet another establishment that I regrettably must rate at five stars based upon one dish alone. The atmosphere is a smidge more upscale than my traditional taste in dining ambiance, but the help is fabulous, fast, unpretentious, and down to earth (which is good, as the dishes will run about $30 a plate). Hey, I was already wearing a sportcoat and tie that day, so why not... But it's the food that you really care about, right? Well, if you want some great seafood, this is probably a sure bet. And I was told the red snapper dish was one of the best seafood plates. Now I know what you're thinking--most folks would probably laugh at the notion of awarding five stars to a restaurant based on a frickin' "red snapper" dish, but really--you don't understand--it was phenomenal. I think the marinade is what clinched it. Sure, the fish was tender and delicious, and the portion itself was quite nicely-sized, but that wonderful rich red marinade surrounding it had such character I would have eaten a plate of that alone. (Then again, I've always been a bit of a sucker for condiments...) But if that isn't enough to convince you, consider the half pound of fresh crab meat sprinkled over the entire top of the fillet. The crab just put this dish over the top. So, yes, I can honestly say with a straight face that a mere red snapper dish now ranks in the top 5 of the best seafood dishes I've ever had.

ok now. let me begin by asking how this place has 3 1/2 stars. let me follow this with the fact that i am not a dick and i never give just one star. i live by the midwestern ethos of, "if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all." but then again there are these places that force you to cry out, "this cannot STAND!" i had been living in shreveport for six months by the time i ate here and had heard many good things about it. there happen to be a couple reviews here that i thought were sharp and cruel and just couldn't be true. well, i was wrong. my wife and i had a friend in town from barcelona, spain and wanted to take her out on the town, impress her with louisiana cooking, so to say. we arrive to what looks like a converted gas station. ok, fine. i don't care about appearances anyway. we enter and there is a wood paneled room with pictures of anonymous celebrities and all. we think, ok fine, should be fine. our host seems to have trouble finding us a table in a very large cafeteria styled space with only four groups of customers. the lighting was rather garish with low ambient light and bright red under the bar lighting lending the space with a strip club charm. we are seated to a table with dirty glasses and missing silverware. we seem to be veering south and fast. then our waiter arrived...... oh man. he was quite impressed with the far flung origins of those sitting at his table and informed us that he had served food in establishments all over the world for the 'Applebee's Corporation.' his appearance was nice (all waiters were dressed in tuxes) but his aroma was BO and dry clean chemical with a subtle overlay of grease and mechanic shop. this was a new odor i had never encounted before. The menu seemed to have many refined choices, but the cheap wine selection should have given away the facade. We ordered our food with minimal input from the waiter who seemed unknowlegable of the ingredients to anything, but everything is "good" as he assured us. We waited about 45 minutes for our food and when it came it was under seasoned, overcooked, and bland in just about every way each particular dish could have been. I never am such a heavy reviewer so take note that I gave this place one star. The locals seem to love this place, but I am not sure why.

We have lived in the Shreveport area for 23 years. We have dined at most of the upscale restaurants in the area through the years but have procrastinated when considering Earnest's Orleans Restaurant. We finally decided to dine there the evening of January 19, 2013. We prefer not to have complete strangers drive our car and never opt for valet parking. The self parking area is far worse than a construction site. Extreme care must be taken to avoid damaging your vehicle in the huge potholes unless you happen to be driving an off-road capable SUV. Although we had no reservation, we were seated immediately. We perused the appetizers and chose the Stuffed Artichokes. The server, Chris, informed us that they were out of artichokes. We then enquired about the stuffed pasta shells. Strike two. I find nothing more disappointing when dining out than the establishment be out of food. I asked Chris which of the appetizers on the menu were actually available. He said that anything else was available. We had the small Crab Claws. They were absolutely delicious. We ordered a cup of gumbo as well. It was some of the best I've ever had. For entrees, we had the Fettuccini Melton and the "fish in a bag" which I cannot accurately name due to lack of existence on the on-line menu. These were fantastic. We ordered Strawberries Flambé for dessert. After waiting 20 minutes, we were informed there were no strawberries. Strike three. We left. Despite having the some of the most delicious food ever, over all, our experience was extremely disappointing. None of these are issues that should reflect upon the server. These issues involve careless management. I refuse to recommend this restaurant to friends and family based on our experience.

I cannot comment on the food at Ernest's restaurant. We called for a reservation at 6:30, and were there at 6:25. At 7:15 we were still waiting for a table. No accommodations were made for my 80 year old mother to do anything but stand and wait. We left and went to the Superior Steak House, and had a wonderful 5 star meal, served in a timely manner.

The first time I went there it was one of the best steaks Ive ever had. the more I go the less I am impressed. The crab claws are really NO big deal at all. Plus theyre cold. The bread is hard and the butter is practically frozen. Overall the food is good but pretty expensive. The parking sucks though. You'd think they could pave it. Valet is nice though.

We've eaten here many times and have always been pleased with the food. I always get the marinated crab claws with the meal. They make THE best. I do feel that the quality of some of the dishes has dwindled a bit from what it was in years past. One warning, some servers try to pad the bill in a sneaky way by offering things like a bottle of wine that's not on the menu and do not offer the price. When you get the bill, you'll likely find that bottle was close to $100.00. That practice is the main reason for 4 instead if 5 stars. Expect to pay a lot for your meal here regardless.

Very old school fine dining experience. Marinated crab claws were wonderful and so was the lobster special. Others in our party tried the steak, veal parmigiana, and fish entrees and everyone liked them. Service was friendly and excellent...enjoyed chatting with our server Tommy who made the entire experience fun. Will be back!

I would give it a zero. The most outdated ugly restaurant I have ever been too, looks like your pulling up to Stuckys when you drive in with neon lights and giant signs. When you walk through the door it's like walking into 1970's porn. After the initial shock of walking in I thought the food must be good, I was wrong. Everyone said it was a must to order the crab claws which I did. They were average at best okay at the size with just a sauce poured on top of crab claws, nothing special. All the dishes that were ordered were covered in heavy sauce and so I definitely did not find any of the food very special. The food was pretty expensive but to top it off I was overcharged Some of the servers were very nice but the lady who is a owner was the rudest person I have ever met came out to talk to me about the bill and the prices of the bill to the rack in the menu and she told me those were the prices deal with it. She charged me two dollars on each dish more than what the dish cost. At the end she basically threatened me about paying the bill. I would never go back to the shit hole much less treated like that by anyone. The worst restaurant I have been to in 10 years at least. I eat out at least three times a week. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone.

appetizers: crab claws were small and not much meat; the stuffed artichoke was all breading , no artichoke to the artichoke. dinner, trout almondine was very good; boss had fillet - said it was excellent service very good; price very high

This is a fever dream of what made a restaurant a hot spot in, say, 1969. It is seriously, bizarrely retro, and while not cheap, well worth your time. Lurid red neon lighting in the bar area? Check. Ancient singer crooning classics? Check. Waiters pushing out a cart to create cherries jubilee? Check!! Food's not bad but your takeaway will definitely be the weirdly wonderful atmosphere.

Ate there and I just don't understand why people rave about this place. The atmosphere is stuck in bad 80's jersey McMansion style. The food was average at best and when the bill came we were overcharged. When we asked to speak to manager a lady who said she owned the place explained to me those were the prices even though they were different on the menu. She was not going to change a thing. I would never go back.

My family has been coming to this place since before I was born. ( I am 26) and I have been going here for years almost every weekend. Until about 3 years ago. The seafood was beginning to taste as if it was frozen and not fresh. But I was thinking it was just a mix up and maybe not the best night. Then after a few more tries we decided the quality of the food did not match the prices as they were charging more for even less. Furthermore, did you know that if you get a different waiter but order the same thing the price is always different?! By $20-$40 more or less. Family has been going to this place for over 20 years and now whenever we debate where to eat on the weekends everyone is in agreement we will never step foot into this place again. Which is sad because this place use to own the food scene in Shreveport.

Waste of money!! First, we were put at a table without menus. Our waiter came over and suggested an appetizer of crab claws. We said yes, but they never made it to the table. Some time after we ordered the crab claws, we finally got menus. I ordered the snapper ernest, and was frustrated that for $34, i continually pulled shell out of my mouth. The snapper was overcooked, the baked potato was raw, and the spiced peach was just a canned half peach sitting on the plate! Myboyfriend got the snapper shreve, the most expensive item on the menu. It looked just like mine, with the addition of 3 shrimp, which my boyfriend said were mushy, and two small mushrooms. The bread was soaked in oil or butter, I wasnt sure which. We asked for plain bread and it was much better, although it was just a baguette of French bread. Our waiter was horrible. For $3, I would have liked a refill of my coke. My boyfriend finished his beer, the waiter took the empty bottle but no offer of another. THEY OVERCHARGED BY ONE DOLLAR ON BOTH ENTREES!! We noticed this after asking the waiter to take the crab claws off our bill since we never got them. The manager then came out and said they were in the process of getting new menus. Normally, I wouldn't have cared, but i was so angry at that point that I asked for the lower price. I do not suggest going here.

We were lost and pulled into what looked like a road side dive. The parking lot was gravel with holes big enough to lose your car in. You can imagine my surprise when I found out this was supposed to be a rather high end resturaunt. We didn't have reservations but were told that it was not a problem and were seated. I can't comment on the food, because after 45 minutes of waiting we hadn't been given menus or even a glass of water. The wait staff ignored us completely and we left.

Don't bother! Mediocre to bad food. Our waiter was pushing appetizers and the most expensive entree. The Snapper Poppiotte was over cooked, very fishy and had bones. The New York was tough and fatty. Our Bananas Foster was so strong with alcohol we didn't finish it. We love good food and appreciate it but this was very dissapointing as we drove over from Texarkana with a group of 9.

This is where we chose to go for Valentines. This use to be like going to the Stork Club in Manhattan, the most upper class restaurant around. Now it's nothing but an overpriced Applebee's. When we first started going to Ernests it was downtown and you had to have a membership card to get in. All the ladies wore their mink stoles and men wore suits and ties. Now young men wear baseball hats and never take them off since youngest Ernest took over. The bathrooms use to have cloth towels to dry your hands after washing now it's brown tear-off paper. There is still Christmas decorations in the ladies bathroom. and the wallpaper in the bathroom is dirty. Now to the food. The cold crab claws and the fried shrimp appetizer is still delicious and classic old Ernests. We have been craving the Snapper Shreve for months but was extremely disappointed. The portions are so much smaller, not creamy, not fresh. The first Ernest must be rolling angrily in his grave. What a true all around mess Ernest Orleans has become under young Ernest and wife Tina. Our Snapper Shreve was $41.99 per person and was worth only $4.99 pp. We will not go back but will treasure the memories of yesteryear.

My very favorite place in Shreveport. I don't live here anymore and no trip to S'port is complete without marinated crab claws at Ernest's. We went with a group of eight for a set dinner and everything was perfection. We had two amazing servers for our table and they were perfect! I mean, they were on top if it. Getting drinks and clearing and chatting and explaining to the out of towners, etc. I wish all service was this good. We had so much crab!!! Fried crab claws, marinated crab claws. Crab in the gumbo, crab Ceaser salad, crab on the snapper and crab on the ribeye! Love it!

Setting the scene : Saturday night 7:30 reservation. Yes,..the parking lot really is that bad. Bring a vehicle with decent ground clearance but there are so many huge dirt potholes. The decor: Dated,..but I actually find the throwback decor charming. Its like taking a step into the past. We got asked which dining room I prefer so I looked at both. The club room had a live music performer, bar, red light casting a glow,..very loungey feel which is fine if you want that experience,..but I was with my family so prefered the main dining area that was more brightly lit with only soft background music. The Service: After reading all the reviews I was afraid this would be a snobby place, but I was wrong. I was warmly greeted at the door and every interaction I had with many of their employees was down to earth good service. My glass never went empty, I received recommendations regarding the menu. The waiter took time with us, like he had nowhere he had rather be on a Saturday night than hanging out at Ernest and helping us out. 5 stars for service. The food: We had an appetizer of marinated crab claws. Perfection. The marinade was so good I used it for bread dipping later. Crab claws were tender and fresh with lots of meet. For dinner I ordered the Fetticine Melton and my husband the Au Gratin Crabmeat. The Fetticine Melton was delicious but I didn't eat much because the portion sizes are HUGE and I wanted to save room for Bananas Foster because I had never had it prepared tableside before. However my husbands dish of Au Gratin Crabmeat was disapointing. The crab meat was not fresh, giving it that very fishy gamey flavor. My husband ate it anyway, tho truth be told at 42 dollars, I would have sent it back. The price: Yes,..it's expensive. Large Marinated Crab Claws $18 Fetticine Melton Thirty something (I forget exactly) Au Gratin Crabmeat $42 Bananas Foster $12 Bread $5 Sodas $3 (no free refills) Verdict: 4 Stars and I would return. 1 star deducted for not-so-fresh crabmeat.

Love to hang out in the bar at Ernests after work. The crab claws are addictive and the beef medallions with mushrooms on the bar menu are my favorite! I love that the staff is always dressed in tuxes and they are so friendly to everyone!

Very attentive waiter who made good recommendations. As others have stated, this restaurant caters to an older crowd and is very traditional. Description stated dressy but the crowd on Friday night was casual including shorts. It was also warm in the restaurant which included my chardonnay which was served in a flute. My husband tasted his martini and immediately stated "that is the most watered down martini I've ever had". We had the fried shrimp and crab claws for appetizers which our waiter said were what they were famous for. Both were fine but not really sure how they got famous for them. We both had snapper dishes which were pretty good-Snapper Shreve and Snapper Pierrepot (sp?). Both were priced around $43. Bill ended up about $150 for 2 which I felt was high for what we got. Very nice staff all around but very old school establishment.

We took my mom and dad here to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Everything from the service to the quality of the food was awesome, and we tried a little bit of everything on the menu. We started with the crab claws and shrimp for apps and they were amazing. I had the uncle nicks kabob, my wife had the ribeye, my son had the filet and my parents both had red snapper, we were all very pleased with our meal. Larry our waiter has worked here for 26 years and did an awesome job taking care of us. We will absolutely go back.

First of all, you park in a field of mud and dirt unless you want to pay for valet service. For the prices they charge at the VERY LEAST they should be able to afford a paved parking lot. Secondly, the meal that I ordered was not the meal they brought, which I didn't realize until it was too late because my waiter did not speak very good English. What they brought me was a $75 meal, which is ridiculous in and of it'self for Shreveport, LA. It was definitely not worth $75!! The decor looked old but not in a charming way. It looked like they just hadn't bothered updating anything, sort of like they didn't bother to provide parking other than the middle of a field. In short: WAY over priced for what you get! I will not be going back!
