Friendly wait staff but the food was not so great. Ordered a steak medium rare, got medium well. Sent it back and got rare. The rest of the food was mediocer at best. I am not sure why this place is packed on the weekends. Surely the one thing Louisianians are educated about is fine cuisine! Not in this case.

Sammy's should be ashamed of themselves for serving half a poboy with a total of 3 oysters on a about 2 inches of bread. That's not right at all. Back to Dempsy's we go!

We love Sammy's, food is consistently awesome and the staff is friendly. My only complaint is that the hostesses are pretty to look at but seem vapid and the dress code (or lack thereof) for the entire staff needs addressing.

Husband had surgery earlier this week so we did take out. Food was pretty good. I had seafood au gratin. U can never go wrong w that--especially w shrimp and crawfish!! My husband had a cheeseburger. He said it was good. We both got sweet potato fries. They weren't the best I've ever had but they were still good.

Great atmosphere, lots of parking, fabulous food and great patio/bar area. Have been here on the patio for events and it's wonderful!

I've been here twice for dinner and every time I come this place is like a mad house. It almost feels like cattle being herded in for dinner time. I really don't see the deal with this place. I have no complaints about the service, a solid 4 stars. The portions are right and the price is nothing to complain about. Unfortunately the food is just average. First time I got the fish with the crawfish sauce and mashed potatoes.....I can't think of any other place that serves mashed potatoes instead of veggies or rice, or dirty rice in this case, with grilled fish. The dinner salad is your $.99 bag from Wal-Mart with a few croutons in it, plus your choice of dressing. The second time I got catfish and shrimp with fries. The shrimp's were huge, no complaint there, but they were also slightly under cooked. The catfish felt like it was sitting under a heat lamp at a Golden Coral for a few hours before it got served. Dry and old would be the best description. Hence 3 stars overall for the food and service. Since I don't frequent the Baton Rogue area very much I can't suggest any alternate places for seafood. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. My wife even though a LSU graduate ate mostly close to campus, so I can't get any suggestion from her.

I have eaten here many times and have tried many different menu items and the food for the most part is pretty good and is offered at a fair price. I have always had good service and the food is always brought out in a reasonable time frame.. The wait staff is also very friendly and when I leave I am always told "thanks for coming, have a nice day".

It's great to have a Sammy's Grill in Ascension Parish and the food has never been a disappointment. It can get loud when an LSU game is on, but otherwise, its a great place to kick back with one of their signature margaritas and try a special.

The food was great ! We came to Sammy' s forgetting it was Lenten season ! There was an hour wait, so we got everything to go ! This still took about 40 minutes, then with all the people there was a mixup with the order! The manager ( Germaine ) came out and apologized for the mixup and proceeded to make adjustments on the bill !! Wow! That's what I call customer service ! (No excuses just make it right ! ) this is one of the reasons Sammy's is one of our faves ! Would recommend to anyone wanting good food and great service !

Sammy's is one of my favorite places to go in Baton Rouge. On Sunday, I always go in for the crawfish étouffée omelet. It's a huge portion, so I can have it for brunch and dinner. It's one of the BEST things I have ever had.

nice new building. lots of parking, friendly ambiance. BUT while i was washing my hands in the ladies room before i sat down, a waitress came flying out of one of the stales and left the restroom - WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS!!! went to take a seat at the bar AND SHE WAS ONE OF THE BARTENDERS. i spoke with the manager and asked for her to not serve me. Being in food service myself, i fear that that might only be the tip of the iceberg but i hope not.

This place is very much below average. Long wait time and the wait staff is not very attentive. I ordered buffalo wings and they weren't even pizza delivery quality, no sauce and dry as sand. I could only eat half of my salad because the bottom of it had just been left soaking in the dressing for some time and they actually have me an extra cup of dressing as if I could possibly use more. At this point my drink is empty, but no refill is offered until I'm almost done with my steak. The steak was good and cooked properly but the char on it was too much like a thin burnt layer. Finally the chairs here are uncomfortable and the wait staff should wear pants, so many people running around in the too short shorts gave me the feeling of eating in an university cafeteria.

Sammy's has some of the best Cajun food in the entire state. I usually visit home three or four times a year, and Sammy's is one if the few spots I always visit when I'm in town. The staff at this location are great.

If you ever decide on Sammy's for dinner, you can either get there reallly, really early, or be prepared to wait. If waiting's not your thing? Come back another time, preferably not on the weekends. If you don't mind grabbing a beer at the bar while waiting 45 minutes for a table, then stay for the solid food and great crawfish. The crawfish at Sammy's has to be one of the most consistent in town. The prices also stays the same from the beginning of the crawfish season to the end, which is fair in my book. The wife and i usually will share a 5 pound tray and an appetizer, and that's enough food for us. I've also just tried their chargrilled oysters and they were fantastic. It must be a recently added item but they do it very well. For about 13 bucks a dozen, they're the cheapest chargrilled oysters you can find in town.

Sammy's is great. It's pretty much impossible to have a bad meal here. My favorite is the pork chops and red beans plate. Second favorite item is the Chicken Dijon sandwich. Oh, and during crawfish season, Sammy's probably has the best boiled crawfish in town.

Usually you think Sammy's is a can't miss but this location doesn't meet that standard. My wife and I arrived early to a mostly empty restaurant and were seated next to an overstocked aquarium which was the main attraction of the five 1-3 year olds there. I love kids but don't expect to be a babysitter while hoping to eat. This should take away a half star to the place for seating us there and the other half for the inconsiderate parents letting their children run wild in a dining place. Now on to the food. I ordered a broiled seafood salad which was small for an entree dish made worse by the tiny amount of tiny shrimp, crawfish, and crabmeat purported to be in it. I mean a tiny amount; maybe a 1/4 cup? My wife had something with eggplant medallions covered in a cream sauce with crawfish. She called it so so and very bland. All this served by a high school kid who couldn't tell me what beers they had on tap. Shame because it's on a beautiful location. Guess they spent all their money on it instead of competent help. Don't see us going back there but will still visit Sammy's on Highland for poboys or crawfish.

We love Sammy's! The service, this time was Amanda, food, management are all great. We drive 45 minutes to come here and it is worth it. I recommend the boiled crawfish when in season, the prime rib poboy is amazing, and do yourself a favor and get the homemade fried cheese appetizer!

Sammy's on highland was always a college favorite, so when we were around Prairieville yesterday, I chose to go to Sammy's. I was most impressed by the vastness of the property. They had their usual bar/restaurant area separated, but this Sammy's seemed to have endless space! I took done pictures of the building, pond, and headquarters building just so my fellow yelpers could get a feel for it. We were seated close to the patio, which seemed like a great place to hang out on out cooler Louisiana days. I'm glad we were seated inside yesterday, though. My mother and I chose to split an entreé so we could split an appetizer. The fried eggplant with marinara sauce was pretty good. We did not hesitate in eating every last bite. However, I would have preferred it to be sliced a little thinner. That's a personal preference, though. I don't like huge chunks of eggplant. On the other hand, neither one of us had any complaints about the chicken Dijon sandwhich that came on a croissant. Very good. We ordered the mixed veggies instead of the fries (have to try to eat healthy sometimes). The veggies were a typical California blend: squash, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots. This worked out perfectly because I hate squash with a passion, and lately I've had an aversion to cauliflower. Thanks for eating those, mom! It's also nice that she especially likes yellow squash (blech). Unfortunately, we ran into some small problems with the veggies. They were well seasoned with pepper, Parmesan, garlic, and lemon juice. Because it wasn't seasoned very evenly, I couldn't help but cough a couple times when I ate huge junks of pepper. Which would be quickly followed by huge gulps of water. Now anyone who knows me is aware that I drink PLENTY of water, especially with my meals. Needless to say, there were a few times I was choking on pepper and didn't have any water left. Just a tad bit uncomfortable. I think I'm going to a water rating scale. Pretty simple - they get a 2 because I has 2 glasses of water. Most restaurants on their level usually get a 4. I know, I drink a lot of water. Sorry, wait staff. While the waitresses were very nice, they were very young and I think they were being trained. Ok service, but not what I expected from this brand-spanking new version of a wonderful Baton Rouge tradition.

Sammy's is a great place to eat. The food is delicious and it is really inexpensive. You do not have to pay an arm and a leg and you get great food in very big portions. A lot of sauces and things they prepare specialty from their restaurant. The staff are always polite and friendly. Drinks are great here. I do not care for their hot wings, they tend to be a little dry.. Other than that this is a great place to eat!! It is a must!! My favorite is the Seafood Au Gratin, it is so good the eggplant is delightful, the seafood on top, big plump shrimp as well as crawfish are so good covered in cheesy goodness. They also have large cookies for sale at the order out counter. I have never had a bad experience here. It is close by my house, I have been here on many occasions whether it is for a birthday dinner, lunch, or simply a dinner date they have met all of my needs. They also have larger rooms in the back with doors they shut off for large parties.

Love this place. Love the alligator and spaghetti. Super kid friendly and our staff is always courteous. I would get there early because although it's a large restaurant it fills up quick. The locals know whether to eat and this place is always a winner for our family.

You use to have the Best chicken gumbo ! Don't know what you did but very disappointing the last 3 times I have tried it. Its not Traditional Gumbo anymore:( you do everything right don't sway from traditional La. Concept

Hadn't been to Sammy's for a while so decided to give them a try tonight with my wife. We had been at this location before when they were newly opened and the food wasn't up to par with the Highland Rd. location. Today though, the food was decent but a mixed bag unfortunately. It was 7pm on a Sunday and it seemed like they were out of a few items so perhaps there is a ordering/supply issue going on that needs to be addressed. I had the red beans and rice and it had good flavor....savory and spicy like you want red beans and rice to be. So no complaints there at all. The only minor complaint is the side of bread....it was French bread, a tad stale and extremely over-buttered or perhaps over-oiled from the taste of it. It came with a side salad and their House dressing was good. My wife ordered the chicken fried chicken with a side salad and Au Gratin potatoes. This is where the food gets a bit off. The chicken fried chicken was a nice golden brown and crispy on the outside, but when you cut into it you could tell it was way overbattered because there was still raw batter next to the chicken and the batter just slid right off. Less batter and cooked at a lower temperature for slightly longer would resolve this problem. Also, the gravy that was on top was not cooked out....it still had gritty raw flour in it and was extremely pale for a brown gravy....more like a blonde roux than a brown gravy. The first side that came out was some sort of sausage and shrimp au gratin because the kitchen allegedly ran out of potato au gratin and failed to mention this to our waitress. However, she went back to the kitchen and found the last of it and returned with the last cup which my wife was thankful for. The color was a bit off...you could tell it had been overreduced from sitting there all day in the pot. The flavor was decent though.....it is the same cheese sauce that came on the first side so they use it for a few dishes it seems. It was spicy with red pepper contrasted with fresh green onion and the cheese...a good combination overall. It just needed to be thinned out a bit with some cream or milk so the cheese wasn't soooo thick and coagulated. Also, being the bottom of the pot, the potatoes were pretty much broken down to mush and there wasn't much potatoes to be found...or at least anything that resembled a cut potato. So.....some good...some bad.....not as fresh as I would have hoped but nothing that wasn't decent enough to finish, once the chicken was removed of it's raw flour breading and gravy.

Wait was long on a Saturday night, but that is expected from a good restaurant on a Saturday night. Boiled crawfish was good and only $21 for 5lbs I had the seafood au gratin yummmmm can you say cheese! They give nice big water glasses with good crushed ice. The staff is friendly and attentive. The fries are nothing special and the garlic bread was nothing compared to parrains or acme oyster.

Roast beef poboy way to salty. Onion ring always great.

How can I put this nicely? I can't... Hard as I try, this is a terrible place to eat and yet the place stays packed . I just don't get it... Tonight's dining horror began when we were put on a wait list for a table but instead of us getting a pager device we were asked for our cell number so they could text us ! BIG NO NO in my book. Then... We ordered cheese sticks as an appetizer which was brought to us with no plates to put them on... The obviously very young wait staff that delivered it did not seem to think handling very large BURNT chunks of molten cheese with our bare hands should be a problem for us. Uh... Excuse me??? Our waitress did remove the scorched cheese sticks from our bill after I mentioned the scorched flavor, so to be fair she did address it even though I did not ask her to comp it. The restaurant itself is a pretty nice looking facility, but looks alone can't save the downhill spiral that this place seems to be in. I think almost all of the problems stem from the extreme youth of the staff. Most of those working the host station ( and I counted about 7 there tonight....why so many???) seem too caught up with laughing and giggling to be serious about their job. The actual wait staff is not much older and definitely not much more mature, and they simply do not seem to take their jobs seriously. I really think someone in management should do something about the attire the waitresses are wearing...

Monday night 4/20/15 6pm Prairieville location Oil was dirty. I could smell it when food would be delivered throughout the restaurant. Fries extremely dark. Kid didn't eat them. I had catfish and crawfish platter. Catfish strips overdone Crawfish was clumpy and underdone Stuffed baked potato was your standard Sysco fare Salad was a little bitter(dirty). Mildly crisp... a few brown leaves. But i lovedd the house dressing.... a Garlic Parmesan Vinaigrette Dressing. We had a large group so we waited some. To be expected. We saw plenty of small groups seated right away. Waiter was funny and attentive. I will not be back.

I have visited 3 different locations of Sammy's and I have to say am not impressed but it's not bad either. They definitely are doing something right because there is always a long wait for a table. They specialize in a lot of Louisiana food staples like your fried catfish and oysters but certainly a lot of dishes to choose from to satisfy your taste!

  • Emily S.

The Prairieville location is Sammy's second location (the first being on Highland Road in Baton Rouge). Sammy's specializes in Louisiana fare- lots of fried dishes, gumbo, seafood, bread pudding, and boiled crawfish (during crawfish season). The Prairieville location is much larger, with lots of space for private and large parties. There's also a nice outdoor seating/waiting area, replete with a large fountain and this is great because there is often a wait at Sammy's. The prices are decent (with entrees ranging from $12-$19). The service is prompt and friendly. I've never had a bad meal at Sammy's but I've also never had a phenomenal meal either. While the Highland location offers brunch on the weekends the Prairieville location does not. This is not apparent on the website though. I found this out the hard way after arriving at the Prairieville location one Saturday only to learn that they do not offer brunch.

A little better than average. Depends on what you order. Crawfish is ok. I like their plate lunches. I will be back, but not my most favorite place.

  • Helen L.

The crawfish is hit or miss here. I've had crawfish that were a good size and delicious. Then at another trip, the crawfish were tiny and very little meat. The place can get real crowded at certain times. The beer selection is nothing to rave about. The mixed drinks were okay. I had a martini and it was okay, nothing to rave about but not awful.

Excellent seafood. Had the fried shrimp and crawfish combo. Service was excellent. This is a must stop for me when I come to Baton Rouge. I have eaten at all three locations, and I have never been disappointed

If you're looking for a great, down-to-earth restaurant, this is the place to go!! Their food, the atmosphere, and their team are all spot on. You may have to wait a little while to get a table, because they are always packed with guests, but it's worth it. Once you're seated the service is quick and the food is delicious. The boiled crawfish last night did NOT disappoint!! Spicy & filling.

Overall my friend and I enjoyed Sammy's Grill. The restaurant and the grounds are really beautiful. The food was good here and it all came out hot. The Gumbo was a little thick for my taste. I went with for the seafood combo. They sell a Lunch and a dinner size. The person with me got the lunch size and I got the dinner size. Guess what the only difference was between them..... The shape of the plate and the price. So don't get sucked in, just get the lunch size (and yes they serve the lunch size all day long). Now one more thing, if you are seated in front of the fish aquarium be warned‼ You will have a steady stream of children and negotiating parents right at your table with you.

My family & I love this place! Always good food, always good service! My favorite appetizer is the Coach's plate and the cheese fries. My favorite main course is the seafood au gratin and you've got to try the blueberry bread pudding for dessert!! Yum!

Higland location much better. Airline location: food is greasy, not much flavor, and service is sub-par. Was willing to gove another try but has not changed on 3 differnet visits.

Alright, time for this update...last stop in was back in August '12 and from my prior review you could tell I didn't care for it...So after receiving a Gift Card I finally got around to this 2d trip... Went 3/26/13 with my sisters to give it a 2d chance....and baby they have definitely got their act together!! Service was timely and efficient but not obtrusive....the kitchen appears to have pulled their heads out and figured what they are supposed to do in a kitchen cause this meal was delish... Started with the Smoked Sausage Platter app (came with cheese, pickles, Roma tomatoes, mustard and BBQ sauce) it was a great starter...To the meal I ordered the Prime Rib Poboy, 1 sister went with the Homemade Roast Beef Poboy, other sister had the Fried Shrimp Poboy plus we ordered onion rings for the table... The onion rings were huge and damn tasty...had a spicy breading and the onion was moist and tender, perfectly fried....Decided to split my Prime Rib with my sister for half her Roast Beef... Let me start with the Roast Beef poboy cause it blew away the Prime Rib poboy...tender & flavorful and dressed just right! The Prime Rib was good but paled in comparison to the regular Roast Beef...the portions were huge...Neither sister could finish their poboys so the dogs ate well! The Fried Shrimp poboy, had by the other sister, looked yummy...alot of places use popcorn or salad shrimp on their poboys but Sammy's they used large, meaty shrimp that were lightly fried...the sister loved it.. All in all this 2d visit was well worth it and because of that I'll be glad in the future to stop in or take guests there for a good time and a good meal...

Their food is bland, nothing special, and the service is TERRIBLE. They have a bunch of little high school waitresses that would prefer to not do their jobs.

This place is always packed! expected great things. Was not overly impressed. I got the steak, ordered medium rare, got rare. not right, but close enough. But was completely lacking any seasoning. Ill come back, try some thing else see if they can get my taste buds going. I was also a little bothered by taking a cell number to text to alert when the table was ready,

I've been here a few times and over all it's mediocre. Service is nothing exceptional. Most times I have to flag down our server, be it for drink refills or the check. Food is hit or miss. I've had very good entrees and also some not so great. Probably won't frequent here often.
