Boudin was amazing. Bread pudding was the best I ever had. Only downside was it was patio seating only.

This has become my go-to place for lunch and sometimes dinner. The brisket-stuffed grilled cheese sandwich is inspired. It's so simple, but so incredibly tasty. The barbecue sandwiches are good. The praline sauce covered bread pudding is delicious. The barbecue chicken that they serve on Saturday is tasty. So far, I haven't been disappointed.

Great job! I love the pulled pork and the Parrain Special. Great place to grab a good lunch and just chill out on their deck.

    Great barbecue.

  • Mike S.

Can I give them 6 stars? Pretty please? I love everything about this place and I've never had a bad bite. This place is Lafayette to me. The home smoked meats are phenomenal. I realized how much I loved this place, when I went to go there for lunch and they were on vacation. My favorite sandwich is a pulled pork sandwich, topped with smoked sausage, but everything is good. The employees are super friendly and seem to all be family. Warning: there is no indoor seating, but there is a great tin roof patio with picnic tables. One of my favorite things is their patio on a rainy day.

  • Krista L.

This was one of the best meals ever. The smoked meats were incredible! Get the stuffed grilled cheese -- it will change your life. Friendly service and excellent food.

  • Preston B.

If I were to serve food, I would do it just like Johnson's. Pecan wood is stacked out back, and a full garden is getting ready to be picked. It truly is a boucaniere, a cajun smokehouse. Pulled pork, garlic sausage, boudin. Fresh or smoked. I had the campos special, a pulled pork sandwich with sausage. Great porch. If you need BBQ or boudin in Lafayette, this is the place.

  • Aaron T.

On the road to New Orleans, decided to stop here for a quick bite and it did not disappoint! The pulled pork sandwich is a must, one of the best I have ever had. Friendly staff completed my enjoyable experience here. The perfect pit stop!

Some of the best food I have had in Lafayette. Friendly people, great service, and oh - the food! We had the Sauce Piquaint and I am still thinking about that dish...Go.

    (5)
  • Zach R.

Bit pricey for what you get. Brisket was very tender but needed sauce to have any flavor. Brisket is stressed instead of the standard chopped.

  • Jen J.

Great atmosphere on a nice day to sit outdoors. Family run. Small. Great pulled pork sandwich and bread pudding!

  • Jeff G.

this stuff was goooood! everything was great place had a nice feel to it, and there was a BBC film crew on the day we went doing a documentary on food and music or something.

This is a family business that got its start in Eunice back in the 30's. The newest generation of the family moved it to Lafayette. Johnson's was one of the eateries included in the Cajun Food Tour ( cajunfoodtours.com ), so we got to see the "working" area! Awesome jerky!

    (5)
  • Sara E.

Yum! Brisket so good it melts in your mouth, & gumbo so warm you forget thst you are sitting outside in 40 degree weather. I suggested my boyfriend investigate turning the smoky smell into a cologne, but that might lead to cannibalism! I suggest taking the bread pudding home & nuking it...

    (4)
  • Holly L.

Sausage and tasso sauce piquante (usually served on Thursdays)...the best I've ever had! i love this place so much!

  • juliet k.

Ordered the brisket, it was thick sliced and juicy, with a side of potato salad and cole slaw, both were excellent. I purchased some smoked pork and garlic sausage and made shish kabobs which came out really good. Oh the best part was the boudin link that comes with your meal, very tasty. Can't wait to go back.

    (4)
  • Gene T.

Hands-down the best boudin I've ever had! And this is coming from someone living in the land of boudin! Also, their super creamy potato salad was outstanding and perfectly complimented the slightly spicy sausage. But one tip - the boudin links are on the small side and about half the size of many other famous places like Best Stop, so if you are ordering by the link instead of by the pound, double up on them. But don't worry, you're paying by the pound and not the number of links. Do not visit Lafayette without stopping at Johnson's Boucaniere! Update: Recently went back to try a brisket sandwich - it was fantastic!

Stopped here on our way home from NOLA. The people that work here are extremely nice. Order at the front counter and take a seat out on the deck to wait for your food. This isn't a classic sit-down and be waited on joint. Our food arrived and WOW! Every single item we ordered was absolutely delicious! Pulled-pork sandwich - delicious Stuffed grilled cheese - yum boudin balls - OHMYGOODNESS! jambalaya - perfect. Not tomato-based, just the way I like it. dressing and macaroni sides - had to go back and order more to keep the kids from fighting over it. My only complaint is that the portions are a bit small. If you are really, really hungry you should order more food than you think you need. I seriously thought we over-ordered but we ended up getting more and still left with room for dessert. The sides are in small styrofoam containers (like 4 ounces?) which is probably how much you should eat but not enough if you are really hungry. I'd suggest raising the prices on the sides and moving up to larger containers or offering a small/large option. Try this place! You won't be disappointed.

Oh my god, awesome. An instant Lafayette classic. The Johnsons started a tradition of smoked meats in Eunice, LA and I'm glad they decided to relocate here. First, the location is great and their building is unique with a back-of-the-house smoker and patio dining. Second, everyone is super nice. Third, the food is stick-to-your-ribs good. I love that the smothered pork plate has bits of sausage on top, as if the dish needed a little lagniappe. TIP: Even if you already ate, stop by for a link of boudin and an Abita Root Beer. My only complaints are that the order area gets packed at lunch time (Of course, whose doesn't?) and I agree with other reviews (Julie H.) that the portions are small by plate lunch standards, especially the veggies. Then again, maybe they are trying to save us all from over indulgence. Fat chance!

  • James L.

Nice atmosphere. The service was great. The food on the other hand was okay. I expected more. I purchased the BBQ Ranch Chicken Wrap and the Grilled Cheese Shredded Pork Sandwich. The BBQ Ranch Chicken Wrap was just okay. Not much flavor . The sauce was bland. The sandwich on the other hand was good. Alot better then the wrap. I will visit again to give them another try.

The place was packed at like opening time! Glad to see this place is making it. It was worth the price and wait. My favorite was the sausage and pork.

You MUST go here and eat their Boudin. It really was that good. To store-bought Boudin what canned tuna is to sushi grade. Just amazing. Changed my idea of what a Boudin can be. I am sure a super-cajun type could argue someplace is "better," but this was just a great sausage in absolute terms. I also had the Sausage and Tasso plate lunch, which was yummy enough to pull me back that afternoon for a Boudin snack. Didn't have anything else there, but got the feeling it would all be pretty good. Also just nice people working there. Super friendly and seemed genuinely happy to have random out-of towner's wander in. Great vibe. Even the customers were friendly...

READ THIS FIRST: Everytime I am in this part of the country I make a point of stopping here. Even getting a hotel room nearby last time and waiting until they opened. SAUSAGE: It is fantastic, get some to go. This is always cooked/smoked to perfection. You dont want to "cook" it at all. Simply reheat it under hotest tap water in the plastic it comes in for a few minutes, then remove the plastic and and quick grill or broil it close to the hight heat very quickly to get full snap back in the skin. BOUDIN BALLS: Best I've ever had. Simply stellar. Eat as many as you can when they're fresh out of the fryer. They are NOT greasy or oily, they ARE filled with super tasty peices of meat and just the right ammount of rice and have the perfect kick that leaves you maybe wanting a drink but you definatly dont need one. I eat them there and get some to go but have yet to make it out of the state without eating the to go portion. BREAD PUDDING: If you buy only one.... you are a fool. I might like it even better room temp but hot, cold or otherwise this is incredible. PULLED PORK: Classic style but is not only very moist but also very, very flavorful. No sauce needed. PULLED BRISKET: Its not Texas style and its not the usual "almost potroast" thing you get when people dont know how to cook brisket. This is something very different and truly great in its own right. It is what is says it is, "pulled brisket" think "pulled pork" but with the richness of beef and slow smoaked brisket and it is fantastic on their sandwiches and goes great with the pulled pork. In fact compliment each other. I have never tasted their sauce because tghe meatws have so much moisture and flavor that I have never needed or wanted to, but if its like everything else they do.. you would probably want to do shots of it. It is already great yet this place just keeps getting better.

We were on a road trip from Texas to New Orleans and this was our first stop to eat in Louisiana. We've never had authentic Louisiana cooking so our expectations were a little high. Needless to say, this place didn't disappoint. I ordered the ribs with jambalaya and it was delicious. There is no place to eat inside, only outdoor seating. The staff was friendly and the service was efficient. It was too bad that we didn't have time to stop by again on our way back.

  • Michael H.

Boudin? What the hell is boudin? Sure, I'll try some boudin. Ten minutes later, I was wondering where boudin had been all of my life. Between the boudin and the BBQ pork shoulder, I had two dinners' worth of food in my tray ... and to my sheer delight, it was just as good reheated as it was fresh out of the kitchen. My trip to Lafayette was entirely unexpected, but I'm absolutely thrilled that going there meant finding Johnson's Boucaniere. That alone made the drive from NOLA worthwhile.

Great location from the University and great food, too. You place your entrée/meal order, grab your drinks and accoutrements and look around. Shortly, your name is called and you're headed out to the porch to pass a good time and enjoy a good meal. The Yelp reviewers' recommendations were great! The Begnaud, some boudin, a chunk of bread pudding and good company! It doesn't get much better. One of the owners stopped by our table trying to return a dropped item to its owner. She was super sweet and so was her son, who took our order. It was nice to see a real Mom-and-Pop operation going strong among the chains!

  • Mike B.

Good god they make the hell out of a Po-boy at this place. Stopped here on a trip across the country, and the staff helped us pick out some great items for lunch, and gave us a free link of Boudin to try! The taste was great, the atmosphere was casual and authentic, and the staff were so friendly! Man I wish I could go back!

  • Lauren T.

5 stars for their sandwiches and spices. My favorite sandwich is the Parrain. How can you beat a grilled cheese stuffed with boudin? 4 stars because there is only outdoor dining and during the summer with the heat and rain sometimes you can only order food to go.

    (4)
  • L C.

Nothing short of awesome. If you want a delightful slice of cajun goodness that is quick, affordable, and amazing, make sure you stop here!! I absolutely love the staff and the food here!

  • Hannah L.

Best BBQ in lafayette by far. Family owned. They have lots of outdoor seating. If you have some extra dough to spend, get the beef jerkey. Also, it is mandatory that you get the bread pudding because if you don't try it, you're making a mistake. Also, their boneless ribs are so tender they literally fall apart.

Awesome food!! First time vistor came here with my mother and ordered 2 barbque plates which comes with either jambalaya or boudin with 2 sides as well for 9.00 per plate which is great and you get plenty food good bang for your buck that's for sure. The place is small and has outside seating you feel at home excellent customer service. Next time i am in town visiting family will definitely come back.

  • Gaëlle R.

First time in Lafayette and first time eating boudin! I love that they have their seat outside: it's perfect to enjoy a peaceful lunch. I got the chicken + boudin + potato salad + fruit salad. It was like eating at my grandma's!

  • Nishant S.

My friends and I were in Lafayette for an academic conference a few months ago and tried out quite a few places to eat. Johnson's Boucaniere was, undoubtedly and by a long margin, the very best. It's a small place with a wonderful vibe. It has the charm of a neighborhood fixture that is loved by everyone. And the food is just unbelievable! Their smoked meats and sausages are da bomb! I tried the smoked brisket, the garlic sausage and the zydeco special po-boys, and they were all mouthwateringly delicious! Also had their boudin sausage and the bread pudding - both excellent as well. I just wish they'd had the boudin balls when we went - that would've been the icing on the cake. Sorry, that's a horrible metaphor. In any case, if you're visiting Lafayette, do check this place out. You won't regret it!

  • Jason S.

This place is fantastic, as a well traveled bbq fan I enjoy getting other rakes when I travel outside of Texas. Everything I ordered was phenomenal with the real stand out the sausage potatoes side dish. I never had anything like it. All around 5 Stars, very nice people at counter to guide me through house specialties and explain all that they do from scratch. Love it

Pretty good bbq. The slaw was so good that when my gf tried a forkful of mine she had to go buy a separate pot of it for herself.

Being Californian's we knew nothing about Boudin when we came and were experts when we left. The person behind the counter gave us a sample and a patient explanation. Boudin is stuffed pork and rice in a sausage casing which you eat by squeezing out the filling. Who would have thought Boudin is the same as Jewish Kishka! They smoke their own meats and the results are spectacular. You order at a small counter and they bring your meal to your table outside on the porch. We had: - boudin - brisket - great but a bit dry plain, but wonderful with the bbq sauce they provide - ribs - the highlight of the meal - different then any other ribs we've had. Meaty, tender, flavorful. - I washed this all down with a bottle of the local Lafayette "Swamp Pop Soda" - praline and cream (a real sugar rush) If you're anywhere near Lafayette (say 50 miles) it's worth a drive.

  • Dominica G.

Friendly staff. Nice location. Good food. I had the boudin link and salad. Very fresh salad and spicy bourbon. I was especially impressed with the bread pudding. I'll be back for sure! I think they may have live music on certain nights too.

  • Duke H.

Family friendly. They treat everybody well. Great food. Pulled pork or pulled beef brisket (smoked 12 to 14 hours) by the pound, or on a sandwich or poboy bun, with or without sauce (hot or mild). Smoked half-chicken and country-style ribs, too. Smoked meats (pork sausage, garlic pork sausage, mixed beef and pork sausage, turkey sausage, pork tasso, tukey tasso, and beef jerky) by the pound. Boudin (same recipe since 1937) by the link or by the pound. Breakfast and plate lunches, too. Don't forget the homemade sides (potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, cornbread dressing, and more) Zapp's potato chips, bread pudding, or locally made soda pop or beer. KRVS Radio Acadie playing on the porch. Music CDs (both Cajun and Zydeco) by local artists for sale inside. Since they opened in 2008, I have stopped by Johnson's Boucaniere for lunch, groceries, or both over 300 times (plus breakfast a time or two). What can I say? I like the food (and the people). So far, every meal has been fantastic. I want to eat here more often but I work on the other side of town and cannot easily make it here for lunch.

What they offer is outstanding What they'll have is day-dependent You want some of this This joint was unlike typical barbecue spots I've come across - they published a set menu, but they were much more targeted around what they had written on their whiteboard for the day. I can respect the desire to serve the freshest and best available, so my friends and I rolled with it. The counter man was highly courteous. Prices were reasonable. After we ordered our food, it was enjoyable to hang on the wrap-around porch of the place, a pleasant May breeze circulating in the oncoming dusk, with Weezer and Kings of Leon piping out of the kitchen sound system. When our orders arrived, we realized we'd be wanting more - we weren't exactly under-served, but the stuff was in tidy portions, it was all tasty, . So, in addition to the various main dishes we ordered, we grabbed some extra sides like fruit salad, potato salad, and bread pudding. And an extra order of boudin...or two. We each washed it down with their local Swamp Pops. Highly enjoyable.

VERY friendly and welcoming people there. Good smokehouse food. Outdoor covered rustic dining only but the food is good. I'll be back !

The gumbo isn't like any I've had before but it's absolutely delicious! Would appreciate a higher sausage to chicken ratio though. The boudin is totally worth trying and did not disappoint. Couldn't help but wonder what it would be like grilled or pan fried. The ribs melt in your mouth and the BBQ sauce has perfect consistency and balance between sweet and vinegary. The cole slaw goes great with any of the BBQ (was not a fan of the green beans). Want to try all the sausages, would definitely come back. Grab a beer from the circle k down the street and you're good to go. P.s. the servers are awesome and fun to talk to :)

Best Barbecue in Lafayette. Try the ribs or the amazing boudin.

  • Stephen R.

Johnson's is a local meat place with a lot of character. They sell the usual barbecue fare (brisket, sausage, pulled pork, chicken) with some cajun flair (sides of boudin, jambalaya, occasional shrimp stew). My favorite is the begnaud sandwich: pulled pork with sausage links and sauce on a bun. It's a family run place in a cool A frame building. Johnson's has a long history going back to a grocery store that closed a few years back in Eunice, a small Cajun town to the northwest. The family opened up shop in Lafayette as a casual restaurant. Plastered over the walls are articles about their story. The people that work at the counter are always extremely friendly. Get some barbecue, get a soda and a bag of Zapp's, walk out to the small wooden tables and enjoy.

We found this place on maps when searching for a place to eat on our way to NOLA. Authentic, delicious bbq. Breakfast is served until 10, but they were kind enough to cook up breakfast at 1030 and it did not disappoint. We got the stuffed grilled cheese biscuit with bbq sausage and egg, kids got pulled pork sandwiches, Mac and cheese, and boudain. Everything was great! Plus not only are they friendly , but their prices are too. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

My first time in Lafayette and a friend recommended Johnson's Boucaniere for bouidn. OMG! So yummy and tasted so homemade. And they have the best bread pudding made of natural ingredients. I literally swallowed it :D The staff was incredibly warm and friendly. What a pleasure to try this place. Thank you so much!

While traveling we love to find the great local places. Johnson's is one of those places that really hits the mark. The unique tin laden building with the outside eat porch adds to the dining experience. But this place is all about the food. The pulled pork and jambalaya define the great flavors of the region. The showcase belongs to the fried boudin balls that are tender inside with a crunchy outside and packed with the perfect balance of garlic, pepper, salt, and other seasonings. I know what I want for Christmas. I left with a jar of Johnson barbecue sauce to drink on the way home. Great place to eat!!!

Everything I have had so far here is beautiful. The country style ribs, chicken plate lunch, Begnaud Special (brisket sandwich topped with sausage) are my favorites. Though the service isn't very "involved", they have been pleasant every time I've been in there.

Every once in a while, you have an experience that changes your life. Johnson's Boucaniere is that experience. Coming from California on a mission to find great food spots across the country, my buddy and I stumbled upon this place only to find the greatest food experience of our lives. The brisket sandwich I had would cause many-a-man to shed tears of joy, perhaps cry out and Thank God that yes indeed this sandwich exists. If you are in the area of Lafayette and would like to experience heaven, I suggest you go to Johnson's Boucaniere.

Best food in lafayette. Their homemade recipes from sauces to smoked ribs will blow you away in flavor. Do not miss out on this honey hole. Again, best food in lafayette, period!

Best and most consistent BBQ I've had in Lafayette! They do great plate lunch options at great prices. You order inside and wait for your food to be prepared, it comes in to-go boxes so you can either eat outside on the veranda. The serves are quite generous and there is plenty of meat and sides to choose from. My only complaint about Johnson's Boucaniere is that its not open on Mondays!

One of my favorites in Lafayette. With all the choices in this great city this has been my go-to spot for a few years. They run out of favorites so you gotta get there early!

We went out of our way to make a trip out after reading all of the great reviews only to find out they were out of what we wanted. Ok, well then we'll go with our second choice. Oh, you're out of that, too? Lame.

We stopped by for lunch while on vacation. My wife had grilled cheese with pulled pork and I had the same except with brisket. I got a cup of gumbo even though they were out of chicken the sauage was top notch. Since they were out of chicken they threw in an extra sandwich which we had not asked for but most certainly enjoyed. Everything was delicious and if we are ever back in town will be back for more.

This is a small, family owed establishment. Nice and friendly people here, with great service. I had the following items: - Bagnaud Special - Slow-smoked brisket sandwich with smoked garlic pork sausage topped with our homemade BBQ sauce, this sandwich is pack with mouthwatering flavor, you won't regret this - Slow cooked ribs plate - all the side items on this plate was so blah.. and unpleasing to the eye.. however the ribs was worth it all.. slow cooked, super tender ribs, oh so delicious wonderfulness, hmm... I would come here again to try out there delicious meats!

This was the best BBQ restaurant that I've been to yet. The sausage Poboys are absolutely delicious. The boudin is literally to die for. The Bread pudding is a reason to go all on it's own. It's making me so hungry thinking about it that I may drive their now.

We love this place!! After reading the other reviews what can I say that hasn't already been said......this is a must eat when looking for Bar-B-Q in Acadiana. Brisket is done to perfection.

This place is great. As a Northerner (Ohio) the gentleman behind the counter took the time to explain some of the meal options that we have never experienced before. As a matter of fact he gave my wife and I a Boudin sausage which was fantastic. With that under our belt (literally) we proceeded to order A Begnaud Special as well as a Pulled Pork Po-Boy, everything was very good.

This satisfied my craving for barbecue and then some. I would recommend trying the Parrain Special as an appetizer. We had their slow cooked country style ribs which were very tasty. No bones about it, if the meat was on a bone it would have fallen right off. Family owned...everything is cooked fresh daily but get there early as they were running out of sides and jambalaya at 1pm today.
