This place is a local institution and has been for many years. It's *the* place to eat downtown whether it's for breakfast or lunch. A group of friends and I have been meeting for breakfast here for quite some time. We love the food and the atmosphere. Every week, a lovely young lady name "Daisy" waits on us and ensures that we have a great experience. After Church on Sunday morning, my wife and I decided to go grab some of Dwyer's famous plate lunches. As it turned out, Daisy was our server. She recommended the smothered chicken, which is what she'd had for lunch recently. The very nice lady who was working the steam table was just as polite and charming as can be. I asked her for some extra gravy so that my rice-and-gravy was a bit "soupy" as it's easier for me to swallow. She said, "honey, I'm gonna put your food in a styrofoam go-box if it's ok with you because it'll make a mess if I put too much gravy on the plate... and it'd sure be a sin to waste that good gravy on your shirt!" Man, oh man, I don't know who does the cooking there... but they *can* cook! The chicken feel apart in my plate. The rice-and-gravy is what I wanted. The last time I had stuff this good was probably the last time I ate here. :) It reminded me of the cooking that I got when I'd visit my Grandfather for lunch years ago where his housekeeper always knew how to make it just right no matter what it was she cooked. Home cookin' at its very best! My wife had a chicken salad sandwich which she said was one of the very best she'd ever eaten. We also had some fried mushrooms... fresh, not frozen stuff... which were pretty tasty. In the past few weeks, I've also eaten a pretty durn good cheeseburger at this joint. At any rate, if you want good "stick-to-your-ribs" down home cookin', give this place a try and you will *not* be disappointed! I'm sorry they're not open for dinner (or maybe it's a good thing as I'd be there all the time). :)

Absolutely one of the worst meal/diners in Lafayette!! Jambalaya apparently made from "box" mix, summer squash bland with no seasoning, most likely frozen that was cooked on the steam/serving line. Baked beans, were a disgrace to baked beans, more like pork and beans heated up on serving line. Fried Chicken, more like "sticky chicken" batter was gummy/soggy. Terrible restaurant!!!

I've eaten at Dwyer's many times and no the food is not the "Best"in Lafayette, but I would of said it was decent, TILL....2weeks ago, I purchased some bad shrimp stew. Got the food home, smelled the shrimp stew, not good, asked if I could exchange they told me they have always had a No Refund, No Return Policy even though the cashier admitted she knows I've eaten there for@least 3 yrs since moving here!!! So my question is wudnt u want to know in advance if u have a problem with food, how the restaurant will react?? Don't b me, don't let 3 yrs go by then u find out they care less about ur business!

Dwyer's is good.. its real good. Down home cooking, reasonably priced, cold beer. A menu sampling: Roast beef sandwich - hand-sliced and delicious, and at $6, is a real bargain. Beef vegetable soup - Yumm. chunks of beef... totally home made Tuna salad sandwich - OK Plate lunch - don't really eat that stuff.. but it looks pretty good. I don't get the 1 and 2 star reviews. If this place sucked, it would not be packed every day for lunch. The people in Laf know good food, so I am claiming that if you gave Dwyer's 1 or 2 stars....you don't.

My husband and I had just finished a yoga class down the street and wanted to try a local breakfast. Unfortunately, it was after 11 am. So, we had to order lunch. After reading in a Yelp review that Dwyer's is open to accommodating vegetarians, I was eager to try a veggie version of one of their sandwiches. However, the server was unhelpful. She asked me, "How vegetarian are you?" Bad start. I ended up ordering a plain salad (lettuce and tomatoes) and asked for some mushrooms on top. I also ordered mashed potatoes with white gravy on the side and green beans IF there was no meat in them. My husband is not a vegetarian. He ordered a bacon cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. When the food arrived, I was given iceberg lettuce, a few cherry tomatoes with canned mushrooms on top. The mashed potatoes were lukewarm, and the gravy had been poured on top of them. Worst, the green beans arrived with hunks of meat sticking out of them. The server said, "I just realized these have meat in them. So, you don't want them?" I said that I did not. But she never removed them from our table for our entire meal. My husband said the burger was pretty good, but I don't expect to be back. Too bad because I like the location. We sat outside and got to watch the Saturday morning downtown life. If you are a vegetarian, stay far, far away!

Stopped by here on our way to New Orleans after Yelping some diners nearby. Food wasn't exactly what we expected.. small selection and not really any breakfast items, which I'm a sucker for. So already didn't start off on a good foot. But the food was actually all right. You can either order from the menu or do a combo platter where you go to the back and order already-made food on a platter (2 meats and 2 sides). Again, not exactly gourmet, but the food was still tasty. Somewhat on the salty side at times (i.e. the pulled pork). Sweet potato fries were hot and crispy though (reared toward the overcooked rather than undercooked end). They're known for their burgers, so had to try the cheeseburger. Meat was tasty and burger well-put together.. but nothing spectacular. I liked the Jambalaya and red beans & rice though. Overall, good place for good, fast food with a creole twist.

You got to be kidding me. Best breakfast or a great breakfast, I don't think so. This place is terrible. I ordered ham and cheese omelet, and it was terrible. And then they serve the food on one of those small plastic plates that is light brown. I can't stand those things. Here is how they make an omelet. They whip up the eggs then spread the eggs way out flat on the griddle so they cook fast. Then they add the ingredients and fold the egg around the ingredients and call it good. A good omelet is supposed to incorporate the ingredients. This place has no clue how to make a good breakfast. Stay far away is all I can say.

After driving past Dwyer's several times and thinking how cute and home-town it looked, I decided to stop in. I went there with a friend during lunch and we sat in the bar. It was super busy and service was bad but I'll hand it to the server he was trying really hard and was apologetic to us. You would think it's prime downtown location and fifty's mom and pop look would make it a great place to eat. But I was sorely mistaken. I got the plate lunch, and was at first impressed at all the items you get for the price, but after tasting it I decided otherwise. The food was not good, I didn't half of it for that reason. It had been sitting for a while I could tell, it was really greasy and just gross in my opinion. My friend got the catfish po boy, which was good. I will say their beer prices are amazing. Two for the price of one? Hell yeah, I'd be down to drink in their bar all day but don't think I'd be ordering food.

Dwyer's is great home cooking. They have a small menu, but the plate lunches each day make Dwyer's stand out from the rest. Several choices of main dishes and equally scrumptious choices for 3 sides, for $7.10. Seriously! I only wish they were open for dinner. It's like going back in time to eat at my grandma's house on Sunday. Fantastic!

Really the only thing that stops Dwyers from getting 5 stars is the service is pretty slow. When they are busy would could wait 20-40 minutes for your food. Other than that the place is great. Huge servings of food for very little money. Great, home cooked meals make you feel like Grandma cooked it. Great atmosphere as the same friendly people are always there. Another one of downtown's jewels. Check em out.

This "cafe" is basically a plate lunch place with servers. It's always busy during lunch, but it's due more to the location of the "cafe' rather than any other reason. It's right in the middle of downtown. Good luck, if you drink a lot. They give you your drink in a tiny little cup, 8 oz. maybe. The ladies that serve you are not attentive. I feel like sheep every time I dine here. The food is average at best. You will get your food in a timely manner, since most of their patrons are the downtown business types that need to get in an out. That's really the only positive.

No-nonsense food. Down home good cookin'! Had the mini meat pies for an app. The pies were juicy and flavorful. My friend had never had a meat pie before and he was amazed at the amount of flavor bursting out of these little bites! We at the bacon cheese burger fully dressed with a shared order of onion rings. The rings were perfectly cooked. I dislike when the onion slides out of the breading. But these were perfectly crispy and crunchy. The burger was just like a homemade burger. The bacon was perfectly cooked and the bun was nicely toasted. Great visit here!!

I LOVE Dwyers. Growing up my dad and I would always go to Dwyers for breakfast before he'd drop me off at school down the street. It's so old fashioned even though they recently renovated, but it's such a great reminder of old Lafayette when the only thing downtown was Dwyers, the Fun Shop, the City Club. Also, every Wednesday from 7-8am they host a french table at Dwyers.

Lunch doesn't get better for the price. Plate lunch AND drink for 8ish bucks. Some of the best fried catfish in the area. Breakfast is just as good! Inexpensive, great tasting, and great portions. Actually, the portions are WAY too much, but isn't lagniappe generally accepted where we can get it? Great for breakfast after a long night downtown, or for lunch when you want something substantial. But I will say, do not go if you are in a hurry. (Legal) Parking is scarce and the line is always long, albeit fast-moving. You WILL wait for a table. But that is a sign of a good, successful business, right?

Oh Dwyer's, I miss you so much! Thinking about my mornings with what I call "heartattack special", bacon, sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich, gets my mouth watering as I type. Throw in those cheesy hashbrowns and I'm more than surely set until lunchtime. They also serve some mean plate lunches. Fixin's that'll get you loosening up the top button of your pants. My personal fave I usually get in my plate lunch, smothered pork chop, dirty rice, green beans, potato salad, with corn bread. If you're feeling lucky, go ahead and treat yourself to some bread puddin'. From there, I'd suggested hit up CC's or a nap.

So my family came to visit and on the day they were leaving we decided to have breakfast at dwyers...Amazing breakfast at absolutely amazing prices.. 5 dollars will buy you bacon eggs cooked your choice a huge biscuit and an even larger portion of the most Delicious hash browns Ive ever eaten.. my one and only tiny complaint is that it took 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee.. and I was in desperate need of caffeine. Good place for lunch...but don't go for breakfast. Every friggin' time I go for breakfast, I think to myself "they can't be as bad as last time", and whaddya know..they're worse. The food is ok, bordering on mediocre...the service is what sets them apart. It's abysmal. Went there again this morning (because wait was too long at French Press), ended up waiting almost 10 minutes to be seated. I'd understand if there was a line and no tables open...but, we were the only ones in line and I counted at least 6 tables open. Then, once we were seated, it took another 15 minutes before I got a cup of coffee...and then another 15 minutes for our order to be taken (after the people who sat down next to us 10 minutes after we did). Looking around, more than half the people were doing their plate lunch, so we thought it shouldn't take too long for the food to come (their plate lunch is basically served cafeteria style, i.e no waiting for the kitchen/wait staff)...WRONG! We waited almost 45 minutes after our order was taken...NOTHING. The thing is...this wasn't an aberration, some form of this situation has happened just about every time we have gone there for breakfast. Life is too short to wait an hour for mediocre breakfast food. We will never go back for breakfast...especially when there are much better options. If you're looking for an obscene amount of decent southern food for lunch...they're good, but avoid breakfast at all costs.

Yet another of those USL(ULL) memories! I eat here every time I pass through Lafayette. They have great breakfast and lunch, although go early because a lot of locals go as well and there will be a line. You get served at a counter by the great grandson of the founder and he asks you so politely in a very thick cajun accent "What you have chere?" I don't think I've ever tasted tongue that was good except at Dwyer's. Real home cooking and a really nice staff. It isn't too expensive either.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch. She had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and salad. The gravy on the chicken fried steak was bland and potatoes were ordinary and the salad was very small. I had the plate lunch with meat loaf, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. I didn't eat most of the meat loaf because it had a strange-unusual flavor and the rest of the meal was just mediocre. I am big eater and usually really like meatloaf. Her chicken fried steak was ok but I have had a lot better. Prices were $7 to $8 per person.

Things just seemed really different in this restaurant. All the locals told me to come here, and I did. I got the lunch special (1 meat and some fixins). It did not impress me. The woman behind the counter didn't even speak english, so I had no idea what she was trying to communicate to me. I had the catfish, was pretty good. But the other sides were not good. I just wanted to find a nice quiet place to eat, and instead I walked into Dwyers, and found everyone staring at me like I was some sort of alien. It was really weird, but I noticed in the South they do that a lot. They like to just stare at you for no reason, and the cops like to over police you while you're there. It's really weird. I have never felt so restricted than in Georgia and Louisiana. Bottom line is this: I think everyone in the south thinks they make great food, but there are only few that actually make a quality product, that tastes good. The rest are just really sloppily p repaired cheap, unhealthy dishes at restaurants with weird names like po-boy, and chitterlings (chitlins)..... It's very obvious to me why everyone in the South is extremely obese: I barely ate a vegetable or piece of fruit the entire time I was down there.... it was always some grossly fat meal, that resulted in lots of stomach issues...Dweyers, I wish you would train your wait staff to serve people, not to be confused after every questions....... I asked simple questions like "can I eat outside" and "what is a popular dish here?" and this little girl waitress just fucking stared at me like I was some sort of psycho? Ok, I"m done, and going to bed.

Always wanted to eat here, finally got the chance. This is home cooking at its best. When entering the establishment, you see many friendly customers and workers. You have to seat yourself, so choose a seat anywhere. The people are nice and helpful, and environment was cozy and chatty. The food was awesome. We had the following: - #3 Breakfast - tastes like what mom cooks at home, delicious! However, I must comment on the hash browns, I prefer the crispy hash browns, these are almost like mash potatoes in my opinion. Nevertheless, they were delicious, I just prefer crispy hash browns though - Biscuit with white gravy - awesome biscuits and gravy, tastes like its made from scratch, was debating on ordering more biscuits just so I can dip the gravy! - Waffle - big & delicious, crispy exterior and fluffy interior, yum! - French toast - the French toast was also delicious! First time at dwyers, but most definitely won't be my last. *****UPDATE***** They also have a very delicious lunch menu! And the great thing is.. they start it really early, I had their lunch for breakfast :)

Great food. The prices are reasonable and you get a ton of food. I wish their restaurant was bigger and have a better way of serving people. I hope they can some way maneuver the restaurant so that they can accommodate more people and have more than one person serving the food.

You got to be kidding me. Best breakfast or a great breakfast, I don't think so. This place is terrible. I ordered ham and cheese omelet, and it was terrible. And then they serve the food on one of those small plastic plates that is light brown. I can't stand those things. Here is how they make an omelet. They whip up the eggs then spread the eggs way out flat on the griddle so they cook fast. Then they add the ingredients and fold the egg around the ingredients and call it good. A good omelet is supposed to incorporate the ingredients. This place has no clue how to make a good breakfast. Stay far away is all I can say.

After driving past Dwyer's several times and thinking how cute and home-town it looked, I decided to stop in. I went there with a friend during lunch and we sat in the bar. It was super busy and service was bad but I'll hand it to the server he was trying really hard and was apologetic to us. You would think it's prime downtown location and fifty's mom and pop look would make it a great place to eat. But I was sorely mistaken. I got the plate lunch, and was at first impressed at all the items you get for the price, but after tasting it I decided otherwise. The food was not good, I didn't half of it for that reason. It had been sitting for a while I could tell, it was really greasy and just gross in my opinion. My friend got the catfish po boy, which was good. I will say their beer prices are amazing. Two for the price of one? Hell yeah, I'd be down to drink in their bar all day but don't think I'd be ordering food.

Dwyer's is great home cooking. They have a small menu, but the plate lunches each day make Dwyer's stand out from the rest. Several choices of main dishes and equally scrumptious choices for 3 sides, for $7.10. Seriously! I only wish they were open for dinner. It's like going back in time to eat at my grandma's house on Sunday. Fantastic!

Walked in around 5:50PM on a Friday evening and we were told to pick a seat and they would be right with us. A few minutes later they came over and told us they would be closing at 6PM and asked us to please leave. So much for the Southern hospitality everyone was raving about. Will Not Come Back.

Really the only thing that stops Dwyers from getting 5 stars is the service is pretty slow. When they are busy would could wait 20-40 minutes for your food. Other than that the place is great. Huge servings of food for very little money. Great, home cooked meals make you feel like Grandma cooked it. Great atmosphere as the same friendly people are always there. Another one of downtown's jewels. Check em out.

This "cafe" is basically a plate lunch place with servers. It's always busy during lunch, but it's due more to the location of the "cafe' rather than any other reason. It's right in the middle of downtown. Good luck, if you drink a lot. They give you your drink in a tiny little cup, 8 oz. maybe. The ladies that serve you are not attentive. I feel like sheep every time I dine here. The food is average at best. You will get your food in a timely manner, since most of their patrons are the downtown business types that need to get in an out. That's really the only positive.

No-nonsense food. Down home good cookin'! Had the mini meat pies for an app. The pies were juicy and flavorful. My friend had never had a meat pie before and he was amazed at the amount of flavor bursting out of these little bites! We at the bacon cheese burger fully dressed with a shared order of onion rings. The rings were perfectly cooked. I dislike when the onion slides out of the breading. But these were perfectly crispy and crunchy. The burger was just like a homemade burger. The bacon was perfectly cooked and the bun was nicely toasted. Great visit here!!

I LOVE Dwyers. Growing up my dad and I would always go to Dwyers for breakfast before he'd drop me off at school down the street. It's so old fashioned even though they recently renovated, but it's such a great reminder of old Lafayette when the only thing downtown was Dwyers, the Fun Shop, the City Club. Also, every Wednesday from 7-8am they host a french table at Dwyers.

Lunch doesn't get better for the price. Plate lunch AND drink for 8ish bucks. Some of the best fried catfish in the area. Breakfast is just as good! Inexpensive, great tasting, and great portions. Actually, the portions are WAY too much, but isn't lagniappe generally accepted where we can get it? Great for breakfast after a long night downtown, or for lunch when you want something substantial. But I will say, do not go if you are in a hurry. (Legal) Parking is scarce and the line is always long, albeit fast-moving. You WILL wait for a table. But that is a sign of a good, successful business, right?

Eating here I know I am in Louisiana. Super. Great plate lunch (I had beef stew, very tasty; dirty rice, just like you'd want; perfect carrots, sweet) while my date had some nice pork. One weakness--they make their sweet tea with Splenda. What the hell? Seriously, you walk into Dwyer's thinking you are supporting your New Years' diet resolution? Weak! Simple place, great food, good prices, nice folks, classic spot.

Whenever I can get to downtown Lafayette in time for breakfast, I eat at Dwyer's. It's a Lafayette landmark, and when I think of breakfast, I think of Dwyer's. They do special orders. The staff is friendly and the service is good.

Oh Dwyer's, I miss you so much! Thinking about my mornings with what I call "heartattack special", bacon, sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich, gets my mouth watering as I type. Throw in those cheesy hashbrowns and I'm more than surely set until lunchtime. They also serve some mean plate lunches. Fixin's that'll get you loosening up the top button of your pants. My personal fave I usually get in my plate lunch, smothered pork chop, dirty rice, green beans, potato salad, with corn bread. If you're feeling lucky, go ahead and treat yourself to some bread puddin'. From there, I'd suggested hit up CC's or a nap.

So my family came to visit and on the day they were leaving we decided to have breakfast at dwyers...Amazing breakfast at absolutely amazing prices.. 5 dollars will buy you bacon eggs cooked your choice a huge biscuit and an even larger portion of the most Delicious hash browns Ive ever eaten.. my one and only tiny complaint is that it took 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee.. and I was in desperate need of caffeine. All and all I cant wait to go back...

Good place for lunch...but don't go for breakfast. Every friggin' time I go for breakfast, I think to myself "they can't be as bad as last time", and whaddya know..they're worse. The food is ok, bordering on mediocre...the service is what sets them apart. It's abysmal. Went there again this morning (because wait was too long at French Press), ended up waiting almost 10 minutes to be seated. I'd understand if there was a line and no tables open...but, we were the only ones in line and I counted at least 6 tables open. Then, once we were seated, it took another 15 minutes before I got a cup of coffee...and then another 15 minutes for our order to be taken (after the people who sat down next to us 10 minutes after we did). Looking around, more than half the people were doing their plate lunch, so we thought it shouldn't take too long for the food to come (their plate lunch is basically served cafeteria style, i.e no waiting for the kitchen/wait staff)...WRONG! We waited almost 45 minutes after our order was taken...NOTHING. The thing is...this wasn't an aberration, some form of this situation has happened just about every time we have gone there for breakfast. Life is too short to wait an hour for mediocre breakfast food. We will never go back for breakfast...especially when there are much better options. If you're looking for an obscene amount of decent southern food for lunch...they're good, but avoid breakfast at all costs.

Yet another of those USL(ULL) memories! I eat here every time I pass through Lafayette. They have great breakfast and lunch, although go early because a lot of locals go as well and there will be a line. You get served at a counter by the great grandson of the founder and he asks you so politely in a very thick cajun accent "What you have chere?" I don't think I've ever tasted tongue that was good except at Dwyer's. Real home cooking and a really nice staff. It isn't too expensive either.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch. She had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and salad. The gravy on the chicken fried steak was bland and potatoes were ordinary and the salad was very small. I had the plate lunch with meat loaf, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. I didn't eat most of the meat loaf because it had a strange-unusual flavor and the rest of the meal was just mediocre. I am big eater and usually really like meatloaf. Her chicken fried steak was ok but I have had a lot better. Prices were $7 to $8 per person.

Things just seemed really different in this restaurant. All the locals told me to come here, and I did. I got the lunch special (1 meat and some fixins). It did not impress me. The woman behind the counter didn't even speak english, so I had no idea what she was trying to communicate to me. I had the catfish, was pretty good. But the other sides were not good. I just wanted to find a nice quiet place to eat, and instead I walked into Dwyers, and found everyone staring at me like I was some sort of alien. It was really weird, but I noticed in the South they do that a lot. They like to just stare at you for no reason, and the cops like to over police you while you're there. It's really weird. I have never felt so restricted than in Georgia and Louisiana. Bottom line is this: I think everyone in the south thinks they make great food, but there are only few that actually make a quality product, that tastes good. The rest are just really sloppily p repaired cheap, unhealthy dishes at restaurants with weird names like po-boy, and chitterlings (chitlins)..... It's very obvious to me why everyone in the South is extremely obese: I barely ate a vegetable or piece of fruit the entire time I was down there.... it was always some grossly fat meal, that resulted in lots of stomach issues...Dweyers, I wish you would train your wait staff to serve people, not to be confused after every questions....... I asked simple questions like "can I eat outside" and "what is a popular dish here?" and this little girl waitress just fucking stared at me like I was some sort of psycho? Ok, I"m done, and going to bed.

the food & service were both excellent - we had a hamburger & a grilled shrimp salad (spicy!). this is one of our favorite places for lunch in lafayette - cheap but good. we have not had the "cafeteria" style food - just doesn't look all that great. burgers are always good - for 3.95! amazing. enjoy.

Always wanted to eat here, finally got the chance. This is home cooking at its best. When entering the establishment, you see many friendly customers and workers. You have to seat yourself, so choose a seat anywhere. The people are nice and helpful, and environment was cozy and chatty. The food was awesome. We had the following: - #3 Breakfast - tastes like what mom cooks at home, delicious! However, I must comment on the hash browns, I prefer the crispy hash browns, these are almost like mash potatoes in my opinion. Nevertheless, they were delicious, I just prefer crispy hash browns though - Biscuit with white gravy - awesome biscuits and gravy, tastes like its made from scratch, was debating on ordering more biscuits just so I can dip the gravy! - Waffle - big & delicious, crispy exterior and fluffy interior, yum! - French toast - the French toast was also delicious! First time at dwyers, but most definitely won't be my last. *****UPDATE***** They also have a very delicious lunch menu! And the great thing is.. they start it really early, I had their lunch for breakfast :)

Live in LOUISIANA since October 1991. Have been in Lafayette numerous times, did NOT had been to this place until 2012. For my birthday ---24 Nov--- I wanted to eat LUNCH here again. Was superb. I had the GRILLED CATFISH, EGGPLANT CASSEROLE, CARROTS AND RED BEANS with a Wheat roll. Enjoyed every bite , this is CAJUN cooking in its best. It is in DOWNTOWN Lafayette. A lot of attorneys eat there. VERY RECOMMENDABLE!

The service was horrible! The food wasn't even hot but of course it took 45 to get our food soooo... The bathroom is dirtier than a truck stop, and smells like one too! We had to ask for eating utensils. And the waitress rudely brought our check 2 seconds after she brought our food! Don't waste your time eating there!

I've only been for lunch, but OMG! Do not pass this place up. Skip the regular seating, go straight to the back and order off of the steam table from the owner! I usually order a "half a lunch" which I can never finish! This is REAL down home Louisiana cooking!!!
