Ah, the three star review. I've never written one before this. I believe the reason why is because as far as reviews go, for the most part, you'll want to either rant and rave about an experience that was either really good or was really bad and don't care too much about what falls off the wayside, which in Yelps case, seems to be a line toeing three star review. But when I just clicked on the third star before starting this, the subtext next to the stars read: "A-OK". Well, A-OK is a bit better than mediocre, right? At least I think so. Which is okay, because that actually suits my judgement of Dwight's, perfectly. Par for the course, but typically above par. Not amazing, but never really a bad choice, either. Just something perhaps to settle an uncompromising group of hungry cajuns that can't figure out which of the trillion to eat in Lafayette for lunch. So should I start with the good stuff or the bad stuff? Maybe I should just mix it all up together like a big gumbo? Yeah, that's what I'll do... Cajun plate lunches are some of the best meals you can eat on earth in my opinion, and Dwight's can offer some of the best out there one of their good days. The parking situation can be horrendous if you go during prime times, and the lot is located literally directly off the most trafficked road in town (also, it's Lafayette, so bank on there being at least a half dozen F750 tank trucks taking up 1.3 spaces a piece). There are plenty of tasty desserts such as their super delicious bread pudding to enjoy after the meal. Be prepare to stand in what can sometimes be an awkward lunch line situation with grown adults sometimes trying to cut and really old people hitting you with their canes. The dining situation is very spacious and carries an accommodating southern hospitality feel. ...Which is weird because their staff can be very rude at times. The rice they cook reminds me of the fluffy white goodness my dear grandma used to make and it may be my favorite rice in town. I've eaten the crawfish on a couple of occasions, and was never impressed; to be be honest I'd go somewhere else for the red bugs. Great location in town as far as centrality, but horrible location as far as just about everything else. They just renovated the exterior to make the place look more modern, which I give much kudos for because that's a rare thing for an older established Lafayette business to do; they tend to stick to their eyesore/backwards mentality roots, no matter what advancements in architecture and aesthetics have been made all around them over the last few decades (please see my Judice Inn review for reference). Their portions have gotten smaller, and the prices have gotten higher in the past few years, which I can only assume comes from competing with the plethora of restaurants in the city popping up each season. On one of the few cool fall/winter days there are in Lafayette, Dwight's has been known to serve up some of the most on-point chicken and sausage gumbo I've ever had in my life (speaks volumes), and is definitely something you cannot miss treating yourself to in the short cold south Louisiana season. And there you go. Some good. Some bad. Some in between. Just imagine a creamy stock of Yelp roux brewing up in a big pot ready to serve to all the good boys and girls that have the knowledge and foresight to check online before dining. And Chef Brock reaches into the Dwight's pot with his grand ladle of judgment and out come three magically tasty stars. I need to quit smoking this shit here...

5 stars for the BBQ! Walked in on a drizzling Sunday at 11:10am and the line was probably 30-40 people long. Fortunately, it moved quite swiftly and I was at the front in 15-20 mins. Ordered the rib plate with an extra pork steak because the lady in front of me said "it's da bomb." Oh boy, was she right! Both were delicious, moist, and tender. Didn't require the BBQ sauce that came with it but it was a nice touch. For sides, baked beans and vinegar coleslaw were scrumptious. Potato salad was good but nothing special. Rice dressing was a little bland. Picked up a bread pudding as well but now I'm too full to try it. I'll update later if it's something to write home about. 3-4 stars for the seafood dinner Came another night for dinner. Was interested in the boiled crawfish but did not order given that it was just the beginning of crawfish season and they were still quite small. Instead, had the shrimp and crab stuffed red fish. It was good but nothing mind-blowing. Same can be said about the charboiled oysters.

Dwight's is the place to enjoy crawfish in season! The tables are designed with a hole in the middle with a wastebasket underneath so no muss, no fuss! The crawfish were huge and and accompanied with red boiled potatoes, corn on the cob and a tasty dipping sauce. Delicious! We also sampled the crawfish etouffe, rich, creamy and spicy along with the baked redfish, stuffed with crab, shrimp and served skillet style. YUM!

Wow... this place has really good seafood! My friends and I recently stopped here to get our crawfish fix while driving home to NOLA after this past Mardi Gras. We ended up ordering grilled oysters and boiled mushrooms in addition to our crawfish orders and left the restaurant more than satisfied. Hailing from NOLA, it isn't very often you come across spice options when ordering crawfish but in Acadiana you get varying "degrees" because they sprinkle seasoning on top. My friend and I ordered hot and by the time we were finished we were both crying, snotty nose and all (it was awesome, btw). Should also mention that I wasn't used to "crawfish sauce" but I tried it and it was actually pretty good, who knew dipping crawfish would be delicious! I always assumed it was more hassle then it was worth but the crawfish tails were so large that dipping wasn't an issue at all. Their grilled oysters were delicious and it seemed like there was mozzarella instead of parm cheese due to the way the cheese was melted (but I could be wrong). The only thing I'd change about the oysters would be to serve them with french bread instead of crackers! Our server was AWESOME! I wish I could remember her name so I could give her kudos but unfortunately I can't. She has her bottom lip/chin pierced if that helps narrow it down any. So, Ms. Iforgotyourname, if you read this, thanks for being awesome and ensuring that we experienced the best Dwight's had to offer!

In all the years I've been traveling to Louisiana, This is the best boiled crawfish I've ever eaten, bar - none. I had regular, my wife had spicy. With both, the seasoning was perfect. The crawfish were huge, which was a plus. I also had the Shrimp, which were boiled to perfection, and the char-broiled oysters which were fantastic. The waitress was awesome, the service all around great. My only complaint would be parking, but that's a minor one.

Out of all the places I ate in Lafayette during my time here spent for work, this place takes the cake. I never had me some boiled crawfish but I see what all the fuss is about now. The boiled craw fish is seasoned very spicy and tasty just the way i like it. Alot of work to get some meat from the crawfish but if you are a lover of seafood, you can't go wrong. I loved stuffed crab and shrimp as well. People here in Lafayette know what's up seafood. The locals here talk about all the seafood at this place so it appears to be a place you can't go wrong. On a wednesday night at 6pm, It was packed! That usually says something.

While in Lafayette, we heard this was a local favorite, and judging by the cars overflowing the parking lot when we arrived, it definitely was! We walked in and were greeted by 2 hostesses and a line of people. We were told the wait time was 30 minutes and she handed us a pager that was in the shape of a crawfish. There was a seating area that had a couple bar stool tables and a couple benches for us to wait with the loads of other people there. We were seated within the time frame they gave us, and we sat down at our table next to a large group of kids, fresh with grass-stains from a baseball game. It was loud! We hoped it would be more quiet once they left, but it wasn't. The place just has bad acoustics. And then following the first baseball team, came another baseball team. In short, if you want a romantic outing with a quiet intimate atmosphere, this is not the place for you. But they do have good food. I had the boiled crawfish, as did another person at my table, and the last person had the crawfish etouffee po-boy. It was all delicious! The flavors were amazing and they have several different types of hot sauce on the table for you to amp it up, if that's your kind of thing. The favorite sauce at our table was the Garlic Sauce, which was made a short drive down the road in Abbeville, LA. Good food, good service, loud atmosphere.

WE love Dwights!!!!! they have the best crawfish in town. I recently discovered their new orleans style BBQ shrimp. Love that peppered buttery sauce. Can't get enough of the char broiled oysters...The season is now over....so sad...next year can't come soon enough!

  • Music Fan L.

I usually have lunch with my dad at Dwights. We could go somewhere else. What does that tell you. Mais la, Dwights is good. You don't leave hungry, I can tell you that.

Oh my goodness, this place is such a find! My wife's cousin lives in Lafayette, and he took us here last week when we were passing through. THIS IS THE BEST RESTAURANT FOOD I EVER HAD IN THE STATE OF LOUISIANA! I had Dwight's Special sandwich, a crawfish po' boy, oh man, it was sublime. My wife had crawfish enchiladas of all things, and they were kickin' as well. I will never pass through Lafayette again without stopping here. Here is how much I liked it: I BOUGHT A DWIGHT'S T-SHIRT! If you are reading this and you are in the area, just stop reading and go there. NOW!

Dwight's is a large neighborhood place -- cheap chairs and tables, etc, with no decor at all -- and quite good food. We had a fine Cajun shrimp salad and and delicious fried seafood platter. (Too much fried for my taste, but when in Rome...) The most popular dish judging by the rest of the diners was crabs in a Cajun seasoning. We'd go back.

I dream of Dwight's when I am craving seafood here in the Mojave desert. Ono, brah.

This is a restaurant NOT a fast food place!! Plate lunches are awesome! Plus there are menu items too. Only open for lunch unless it is crawfish season then they are open at night for dinner/supper and they serve other foods besides crawfish at night. Some of the best boiled crawfish around during the season!!! On Sunday's they always have BBQ -- also awesome!!

  • K M.

Dwight's is 'oh gawd' good, from the ambience to the service to, of course, the food. This is truly home-cooking, just served in a commercial establishment. We used to buy groceries here in the sixties when it was the Super Check Mart, owned by Dwight's dad...we always called Breaux's

    (5)
  • S W.

Well, thank you for all the great reviews. I agree! I had the best crawfish etoufee I have ever had. Delicious!

  • Marko M.

My first crawfish experience as a visitor to the area was awesome. I ate the half and half platter (half fried half crawfish etouffe) and my dining companion had half and half on a poboy (dwight's special). The etouffe was creamy and plentiful. We also had a good corn and crab dip. Very casual, and definitely the place to go for piles of food. Appears to be a local favorite, and I can see why.

I traveled to Louisiana with my mom so we could enjoy the culture and food. On our driving trek (from Houston airport) to New Orleans, this was one of our foodie highlights. Our mission in Cajun country was to attend the Crawfish Festival and dine on great crawfish. I love plain old boiled crawfish - actually, far from "plain" with all the spices used when done right. I had read Yelp reviews, and figured this was our place. Simple yet funky atmosphere. Dwight's was busy and full of locals, right In the middle of Crawfish Festival weekend in nearby Breaux Bridge (which we attended during the day - awesome Cajun music and snacking). We arrived just before a wait list began, and had an adorable and efficient young waitress, Brittnie. She guided our dining choices and we splurged with an order of barbequed oysters before our crawfish extravaganza. They are served on a half shell with a crazy good sauce and some cheese, with a tang of barbeque flavor from the fiery grill they are cooked over. Really delicious, but a bit rich for me. Mom loved them. Next up, boiled crawfish. They come with a piece of corn and a couple of spicy red potatoes, in either a 3 lb. or 5 lb. serving. Brittnie assured us that she can eat the 5 lb., so I ordered that, while mom went for the 3 lb. Mind you, after learning at the Crawfish Festival that for each "pound" of crawfish, only about 15% of that is actually the meat, I didn't feel too much of a glutton. That is until I finished. No room for dessert, that's for sure. And every last bite was exactly what I had hoped for. Cooked to perfection, a nice little spicy burn, not too bland and not too hot. Afterwards, Brittnie offered a tour of the back kitchen to see the crawfish sorting machine, the barbeque pit, and the crawfish cooking area. Awesome! Asked the "chefs" a few questions... one answer was particularly interesting: On the busiest of weekends, they can cook up to 2000 lbs. of crawfish. Oh my. It's definitely worth a visit if you want a very low key, friendly atmosphere and great, basic southern seafood.

There are many, many great seafood restaurants in Acadiana, but when crawfish are in season, you'll find me at Dwights. Nuff said!

I can't wait for Sundays because Dwight's has their famous BBQ. Get there early on Sunday's because they tend to run out of the choices for meats. Your BBQ plate comes with a side of the best dirty rice I've ever had, french bread, and two other side choices that consists of: green beans, corn on the cob, baked beans, potato salad, and gumbo/ettouffe. Then you have different choices for your meats: half a rack of ribs, pork steak, brisket, and white/dark chicken. By far, their ribs are up to par along with their excellent BBQ sauce. I love this BBQ sauce because it has heat, tang, and texture. The ribs are smoked to perfection. All this for a mere $8.95. Be prepared to wait in line along with the rest of us.

Dwight's is a great spot for seafood in Lafayette. The delicious - and piping hot - trays of boiled crawfish are enhanced by the tables with the holes cut in them for discarding your trash, the endless paper towels, and the sinks outside of the bathrooms for the huge mess that you'll make. The divided dining room makes it great for groups, but it can get a little noisy when it's busy. Also, it's good to call ahead to make sure they're open - their hours can be a little spotty.

  • Anderson M.

We almost didn't go, and I'm glad we did. I really like that you can call your own spice level for take out orders. A lot of crawfish places only have one level of spice, and we like it super spicy. We got 3 pounds of the XXX, and my hands are still burning hours later after repeated washes. This is a good thing, BTW. Crawfish were large and succulent, like baby lobsters. It's my second time to Dwight's, albeit spread over 4-5 years. I now wish I had gone more frequently! Save money by eating out, if for no other reason than not having to tip 15-20%. Plus, I don't know if they "boil-to-order" spice-wise when you dine in. A gem of a place in Acadiana. One day, I'll try their BBQ, as well.

This is a great local Cajun spot for family and friends to enjoy pounds and pounds of crawfish and have a great time. We only had the 5lb crawfish and it was delicious and spicy. Loved the potato and corn that came with it. But my mouth was flaming with heat, it was spicy but good spicy. Crawfish 10/10. Service 7/10.

  • Denis C.

Casual and unimpressive in terms of looks, the food is what makes Dwight's a local favorite. I got myself acquainted with their roast beef po' boy. My wife had the red beans and rice. Both were excellent! We were sad when we had our respective last bites. We're travelling through Louisiana next month. Guess where we're eating along the way?!

Food was really greasy and the staff wasn't friendly. For the price you pay for food here your better off going some place else.

  • Jimmy M.

Totally awesome place to eat. The service was fantastic and the crawfish were as well. The crawfish were the best. We also had boiled shrimp very good as well not much on the looks of the place but the food makes up for that. Expect a small wait but believe me it is well worth the wait.

  • Peter N.

A little family owned business, only open for lunch. The establishment may not look "pretty" and the staff is not always nice. But the homemade feeling is sure darn good. You choose a main entree, and 2 sides and a roll/cornbread. We tried: - Crawfish Etouffee: which was good, and might be spicy for some, but thats Cajun for ya. - Pork Steak: which was decent, could be more tender, but overall not bad. Got to try their plate lunch finally, it was delicious.

Dwight's is of the path if you are passing through but worth the trek for lunch at a good value. Lunch is casual counter serve by friendly and helpful servers that will give you a sample to ensure you get the right meal. The Cajun dishes lean a little spicier than what I've experienced but good. The ettoufee was delicious.

  • Stephen R.

Spicy, very big crawfish (for early march). They are on the pricey side, but 3 pounds plus boiled onions added on filled me up. The tables have big holes in the middle so you don't have to pile your shells up, and they give you mayo and horseradish to make your own sauce.

  • Tomika B.

The best crawfish I ever had...in my life....EVER! I cant wait to go back! Austin was a wonderful server too.

    (5)
  • Todd N.

Poor parking situation. Overpriced boiled crawfish. Long lines. It's not that their food is bad, it isn't. But it's not worth the hassles listed. I prefer Crawfish Time on Ridge Rd, give them a try.

    (3)
  • Yvette H.

Dwight's crawfish etouffe is the bombdotcom. The best I've ever had by far! My friend ordered the steak and etouffe combo which I got a bite of and it was also so delicious!!! Will definitely be coming back for that. We also ordered boiled crawfish but it was slightly overdone. But still pretty good (not as good as Crawfish Time). All in all, a great place to bring anyone who is visiting Louisiana to give them a taste of cajuntown!

    (4)
  • Melissa H.

Awesome étouffée! Try the crawfish half and half. Service wasn't the best but the food was great!

    (4)
  • Glenna S.

Not worth going out of your way to get there. Maybe it was a bad night? Place was packed. Boudin excellent. Crawfish étouffée was nothing to get excited over. No ambience.

  • Melany D.

dont reccommend anything BUT the crawfish bowl. All other plates have been yuck, service is just okay, many young kids. worth a stop but not too too much to brag about. okay prices. parking lot big but fills up fast. try it!

We gave Dwight's a go - even though my boyfriend got it confused with another place. We were seated and greeted immediately by our server - a super cute and super friendly person. She made some great recommendations, especially since I'm not a huge seafood fan. We got some fried oysters and onion rings to start. The oysters are pretty tasty and the order of onion rings was RIDICULOUSLY huge, and messy-battered, just like I like it. The onion rings were good, but they could have used just a touch more seasoning. For the entree, I followed our server's recommendation and went with the hamburger steak- gravy on the side. It didn't sound altogether awesome, but I've got to say it was mighty tasty! It's kind of like a salisbury steak with cheese and grilled onions on top. It was served with a stuffed potato, but the potato was the least awesome part of my dinner. And can I just say.... having a hole in the middle of your table with a trash can underneath is friggin' genius. We ain't got those in Texas! Our server kept our drinks full, was attentive and did a great job. I really liked this place, and will have to add it to the agenda for our next trip to Lafayette.

  • Desi D.

We ate boiled crawfish here last Friday. The doors open at 5PM and there was a substantial line forming along the front of the building when we drove up. We were seated right away, but there was a wait shortly after we snagged our table. Get there early! I ordered my crawfish spiced medium/normal and they were PERFECT! Boiled to perfection and easy to peel. The tails popped right out - they weren't mushy (a sign of overcooked/boiled crawfish). The server was attentive, but not pushy. There was a sink in between the bathrooms for you to wash your hands. The holes in the tables make disposing of the crawfish carcasses so simple. I love this place - a favorite for boiled crawfish!

  • Mark B.

Seems a bit popular. Great for crawfish but rest of lunch menue was so so. Most items BBQ and heavy sauce and standard sides that did not look appealing . Would not go back.

  • Margaret N.

I've never been to Louisiana before so I came to check out Dwights because it had pretty good ratings from Yelp. I asked the server what was their most popular dish, and he suggested the Crawfish Ettoutee--guaranteed the best in town. It was AMAZING! I would definitely come here again.

    (5)
  • Lisa G.

Best Crawfish Étouffée I've ever had at a restaurant. Very spicy, and huge servings!!

    (5)
  • Linda T.

What's wrong with you people. From NOLA, worst crawfish étouffée ever. Swimming in butter and so spicy you could not taste the crawfish.

    (2)
  • Dan R.

I left out the 5th star for those of you who want a bit more ambiance. If you want good food and friendly service, it's great. Nobody in the area has crawfish as good. In fact, if the owner can't get first class crawfish...which can sometimes happen...he'll pull them off the menu rather than settle for second best.

    (4)
  • Cory L.

If I have a choice for boiled crawfish, my choice is DWIGHTS! Always clean, Always a good size, Always Spicy! Dwights ONLY offers crawfish when they are at a good point in the season. You will never have to worry about going for crawfish and ending up with a bunch of shrimps (no pun intended). BE ADVISED! Their extra spicy means that they cover the outsides of the crawfish in spice as well (which they do not normally do). Avoid this if you are prone to sweating/wiping sweat, etc. This is definitely the spot for boiled crawfish. Their shrimp is excellent to. Not a big boiled seafood fan? Their Crawfish Half and Half is worth the trip in and of itself. And their broiled oysters on the appetizer menu are a MUST if you are a fan. Pricing is a TOUCH higher than some places, but it is 100% worth the difference.

I've only had their Sunday lunch special, but it was good.

My wife and I went out of town for a mini-vacation and decided to stop here since the reviews were pretty good. I'm always in the mood for seafood so Dwight's seemed like the choice for the night. The place was pretty slammed when we arrived but surprisingly enough, it only took ten minutes for us to be seated. Parties of 4 or more may have a bit of a longer wait. When our charbroiled oysters came out, we weren't given appetizer plates because the servers were told "not to give customers plates with charbroiled oysters because they come out really hot and we don't want you to burn yourself." Ooooook? So we had our oysters but no silverware, no Tabasco, no lemon, and no cocktail sauce. Come on, now! We live in Louisiana! After asking two other servers for these items, we started eating. The oysters had barely melted mozzarella cheese on them. Not Romano and Parmesan cheese like they're supposed to. No spices or flavor at all. Very disappointed. My wife ordered BBQ shrimp for her entree and I ordered their boiled crawfish which is what they're known for. The shrimp were pretty small for being gulf shrimp but the crawfish were really good. Spiced just right and just the right size crawfish. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience but it could have been a bit better.

Stopped here for lunch. I had the pork steak in gravy on rice, corn bread, green beans and macaroni salad. The food here was like good home cooked Cajun food I have eaten in the past. Servings were large and the food was not overly spiced. The atmosphere is very casual and it was full of locals. Recommend if you want to experience real Acadian food.

    (5)
  • Craig W.

Great BBQ!!! We are regulars on Sundays for the BBQ. Consistently good!!! The chicken is real good as is the pork steak.

    (4)
  • Doug E.

If you're from out of town, and you want what's best about SW LA food, this is one of the greats. No gimmicky lump crab meat in a cream sauce over EVERY entree as some others do, just simple great food. You won't be impressed by the atmosphere (each table has a trash can in the middle-you'll understand). You won't be impressed by the presentation, and you'll scoff at the amount of fried items. But, if you want crawfish, shrimp, crab, this is one of the best spots in town.

    (5)
  • Tyler F.

Went there last Friday night for crawfish and it was outstanding. Long wait, but worth it and cheap beer. Will be going back soon.

  • Scott R. D.

5 pounds of boiled crawfish for $24. Fantastic. The service was attentive and sweet. Our Lafayette friends took us there and all three couples split the five pound bowl. I loved the hole in the table to discard the shells into. The onion rings were really good too.

  • Bruce S.

If there is a platonic ideal form of a cajun crawfish diner, Dwight's is it. Recommended to me by a Lafayette local, I now know that I will never again eat spicy boiled crawfish this good again, unless I make my way to Dwight's again. That return visit is made even more complicated by the fact that Dwight's is only open during crawfish season, roughly January-May. One piece of advice: if you order the hot spiced version of the crawfish (which I recommend) you should bring along protective goggles, so that you don't have to experience the mace-like sensation of having crawfish rub squirt into your eye, as I did. Given that 3 pounds of ultra-fresh boiled crawfish only cost a meager $13, you will have plenty of cash left over to pay for the goggles.
