The Chris's Poboy was really good but make sure you get the side of gravy. I like it because most po boys are so big you can't take a bite. That's not the case with Chris's special. I loved it. The sausage chicken gumbo was good but not great. The building itself looks a little scary from the outside but very clean on the inside. Good service. It's worth the stop when traveling to New Orleans.

We were heading home from NOLA to Shoreacres, TX. Used Yelp to look for a good po boy, and we got it! At first when we pulled up, we thought about not going in, then we did. And we were glad we did! Small, unassuming little place. Cold inside and clean. Great service as well! Shared the gumbo, husband had boiled shrimp po boy and I had the muffuletta with fries. Gumbo was served with rice and garlic bread. The bread! Amazing! It melted in my mouth! There was nothing that wasn't great.

I tried this local spot for the first time tonight after living in Lafayette for almost two years now (I know, I know, shame on me). The environment is sort of bland, but the poboys are quite the opposite! I got the Chris's special, because why the hell not? Roast beef, ham, Swiss cheese, and *drum roll please* GRAVY. This was hands down one of the best poboys I've had. The flavor was just right, the bread was perfect (crispy crunchy, as French bread should be) and they were not stingy with the meat. I mean my poboy was falling apart after the first bite. -There is no sweet tea here. I was disappointed with that. - The service was friendly. The woman that checked us out thanked us for stopping in and invited us back. - Dine in customers get to seat themselves, which I liked. Overall, I was very pleased. I will be back!

Delicious Poboys but the service is not tip top. Our waitress got confused a lot but in her defense we were a group of 12. If we tried to help her she would get even more confused, she forgot some of our dishes, got some wrong, etc. Another complaint was that although I love my people, there was a table behind us listing to music videos and videos on their phones at full blast! What on earth people?! Have you ever heard of table manners? Do that stuff at home.

Wonderful. My mom Had sausage and chicken gumbo and I had the half a muffuletta and my son had ham. It was all exceptionally good. The waitress was very nice and efficient. Awesome unsweet tea (I love iced tea, so this is important to me). Really great experience.

This is really more like a 3.5+. The Chris po'boy is amazing. The bread has a perfect slightly crisp exterior that yields to the softer insides, cradling the fillings perfectly. The fat shards of ham, roast beef shredding apart, the swiss softened by the heat of the gravy and the mayo combine perfectly into this flavor that you can't stop eating, because you can't figure out how such simple ingredients have combined so ideally. Service was friendly and prompt. Why not a solid 4, then? The gumbo had a strange metallic undertone, the kind I associate with overcooked soups/stews. I tried it with the rice and without and, it was inescapable. Reading the other reviews, it's possible I just got an off batch, which is unfortunate because I probably won't be back in the area any time soon to correct this impression. The garlic bread that came with the gumbo is made of the same bread as the po'boy, which means that the bread itself is amazing - just not with the garlic "butter," which tasted of margarine. What a waste of that lovely bread! Nevertheless, very much worth a trip - you need to try this po'boy.

Amazing shrimp po boy. It only has a couple ingredients but the simplicity is what makes it. And even more so by the bread. Try the bread. Get the gumbo. Try the bread. Get a po boy. Try the bread.

Place looks run down. Lettuse leaves in shrimp salad were wilted. Potato salad was a carrier for sugar. GUmbo tasted nothing like gumbo...need I go on? Service people were nice, though...

So I ordered a 1/2 & a full to go. My gf is born and raised Baton Rouge, driving from AL to TX and she asks me for the Beat mufalatta I can find. I do my research, these guys come up as a 30 min detour. I go, friendly help, everyone is nice, I get home 7 hours later and the sandwiches have only meat and cheese on them, no OLIVE SPREAD or mayo. Basically I paid $22 for two bologna sandwiches. My girl thought I was an idiot, meanwhile I went so far oyt of my way for thees, cause they're supposed to be the best. Very disappointed.

We had shrimp poboys, they were dry and nothing special. Too expansive for two pieces of bread, few shreds of lettuce, no tomato, no pickle. A very disappointing poboy!

  • Laura F.

Solid 4 stars. They have a simple menu, but it is all tasty and huge portions. The 1/2 poboy is more than enough especially paired with a cup of Gumbo. We got the shrimp and the Chris special, all were great. Service was good. My only complaint is they charge too much to add tomatoes to a po boy.

This is definitely a great little place just off I 10 in Lafayette. We had the gumbo and an oyster poboy and it was delicious! The wait staff was super friendly! Skip the fast food joint and head here!!

I just moved to the area and visited Chris's. My family was greeted with welcoming smiles and seated immediately. My toddler needed some attitude correction so I took her outside for a spanking and a talk. When we walked back inside, a man behind the counter told me he was proud of me. He came to our table and gave my toddler some rice and gravy-she LOVED it. He also gave her a cookie. The kindest service I've ever received. What a treasure these people are. I'll be back for many years to come! Oh! And my shrimp poboy? I usually can't eat a lot, and I gobbled the whole thing AND the seasoned fries. Yummm!!!

So let me just start with saying we've been here twice now in the 5 weeks we've been in Lafayette. Both of us (the hubs and I) are huge fans of the Poboy, and we've definitely tried our fair share of those yummy delights all over town. I think it's fair to say this Chris Poboy (can't speak for the other 2 locations) is by far the best place in town to get your Poboy on. And oh my gosh get you some of that amazing chicken & sausage gumbo...best I've ever had. I had the Chris' special (half), which is roast beef, ham, melted swiss with gravy...OMG! Ridiculous. Hubs had the roast beef with gravy and loved every bite. We had split the gumbo as an app and we were beyond full when we left. Just too damn good. I'm coming back for sure!!

We enjoyed this place. Just a quick 3 min drive off I-10 on our way home to Houston. We ordered shrimp po boy, turkey & Swiss, ham & Swiss, smoked sausage po boy & a mufaletta. Every sandwich is dressed with mayo and shredded cabbage. My husband ordered tartar sauce & cocktail sauce with his shrimp po boy. The bread was really good on all the sandwiches. The mufaletta was really good...not overly olive-y. The only thing to say about the sandwiches is that we wished they would have come with lettuce & tomato and onion. But Chris's follows the true meaning of po boy, so simplicity is definitely their way. We prob could have requested it. When we left, we all got a choc chip cookie. These were $1 each and worth every penny. Super chocolately!! We would recommend that you stop here if you are on the road. Very friendly and fast service.

We ate here passing through on our way from Houston to New Orleans. We split Chris' Special and a cup of gumbo. Delicious! The place doesn't look like much, but the food is good. And those are the best kind of places!

Stopped through on our road trip for a quick and easy dinner, but wanted to eat some local fare, instead of the normal chains. I had the catfish po-boy and it was great. My wife had the ham and cheese po-boy and said it was good. Had quick and efficient service as well.

Not too far off the highway. Great po-boys. We got one oyster and one catfish po-boy, and the catfish was the winner! I'm not a connoisseur, but was one of the best I've had.

I use to like this place. I haven't been in about a year. We just recently moved back. So I was very excited for a real shrimp po boy vs. the ones I could get north Mississippi. I got a half sandwich, because I remember not being able to eat a full one. To my very disappointment it was just bread. Barely any shrimp and was nearly 9 dollar for half a sandwich only. No side came with it. I should of gone to ole Tyme. At least at ole Tyme I would of gotten 3 times as much food for less then 9 dollars.

Gumbo was really good, would have liked more gravy on Chris' special. Other than that it was really good. Got some local beer on tap. Will return.

Have the best Roast beef po-boys in the country!! Ask for extra gravy. The chicken and sausage gumbo is good as well.

Found the high listing of this place on YELP while enroute to NOLA. Drove up at 7:54pm. They saw us coming and turn the sign to 'closed' and locked the door right in front of us! How rude!

Gumbo is excellent. Pork roast poboy is my favorite. Really love their 1000 dressing, it's homemade.

Me and my family came into Lafayette and was disappointed that All the restaurants around town were closed from 2:00 to 5:00P.M. and we wanted Cajun food and found this place. We weren't expecting much just looking at the building, and thought it was strange when they said they didn't have sweet tea, but was we wrong. The bread they use to make the sandwiches is just perfect and crisp. We ordered the Muffalatta, and Chris' Special Po-boy and both were phenomenal. Had the gumbo for an appetizer, which was very good along with the crisp fresh bread that came with it. The Special Po-boy was not soggy, but had perfect warm crisp bread and perfectly moist, with much flavor. The Muffalatta had very crisp bread and the olive, and other ingredients within the Muffalatta went together perfectly. You could not ask for a better late lunch or food. Our family continued our trip to Baton Rouge where we ate at very good and iconic Baton Rouge restaurants, but on our way home we was still talking about this place. Very good surprise, we will eat here when we drive through Lafayette, La.

Good stuff, Maynard. Drove into Lafayette from Texas, just wanted some good cheap local food. This place was close to our hotel, saw some good reviews here, thought we'd give it a chance. Sure glad we did. Took another yelper's advice, ordered a Chris's Special and a small bowl of gumbo, easily enough for two people. Added an order of fries, not knowing that the po-boy came with chips. No problem, I was hungry. Add a couple Miller Lites, Not 5 minutes later, here was our food. Damn. The po-boy was great, not Mother's great but damn good. Plenty of roast beef, ham and cheese, a little lettuce and mayo. I would probably add tomato next time. The gumbo was really tasty, plenty of chicken and sausage, and it comes with a side of crusty bread for dipping. All that for under $25. It will definitely be on my radar the next time we come through town.

Wow, awesome. Food: Had the 'Chris Special' of Roast Beef, Ham, Swiss. Bread was from Breaux Bridge, and really taste like the best of them! Gumbo was very good. Service: Was fantastic, the waitress brought numerous refills of tea and sodas for the kids. Stopped by for small talk when she had time. Atmosphere was very relaxing. Price: Very affordable to feed the family. 2 people can split the large po-boys and gumbo. Brought a group of 11 people last Saturday from out of town. Louisiana transplants moved to Houston past 15 years and Houston simply does not have any good po-boy shops. All left very pleased and we are definitely stopping by as we pass through off I-10 to New Orleans again.

I had lunch around noon on a Wednesday. Plenty of tables available. Menus are on the table so take a seat and a server takes your order. Service was fast and friendly. I ordered a roast beef PoBoy (1/2 half order) which comes with a potato chips and a pickle. The half order is plenty for one person and very good. Total bill (including one beer) came to $8.95. Recommend for good value, friendly and fast service.

We placed an order for pickup since we were staying in the hotel down the road. My expectations were high due to Lafayette being known for the best food on the planet. I was seriously let down. I had the catfish poboy and my bf had the shrimp poboy. The catfish was the better of the two however the sandwich was super dry and the catfish was soggy. Had I remembered to grab some hot sauce the sandwich would have been better. The shrimp poboy was not lacking in shrimp i will say that however they tastes horrible. I'm giving the three stars on the very hospitable waitress who helped us at the counter.

So this place is kind of run down - best described as a dive. Don't expect anything but good food and you will be happy. The Chris' Special was delicious as was the muffaletta. Also, nice and polite service. Overall, I loved this place!!!!

Amazing gumbo. Potato salad differs per location, which kind of sucks. Sandwiches are so-so but the gumbo is phenomenal.

If a poboy restaurant has a "special", that is usually what I order if I haven't been there before. This is my first trip to Chris' so it's no mystery that I ordered the "Chris' Special", which comes with "Roast Beef, Ham, Swiss, and Gravy". It came out rather surprisingly fast, like two minutes...maybe...served covered with potato chips. The bread was classic French loaf, which all the best poboys are made on. Upon tasting, it was good and really hit the spot. The roast beef tasted as if it was made in-house and sliced thin. The gravy gave it a traditional napkin needing texture, but in my opinion, only added a little bit of flavor. The ham and Swiss added their own touches and brought the poboy full circle. I ate half as it was served, the other half I added a dozen or so squirts of hot sauce, which improved the whole sandwich. Needed a few more slices of ham, and if they added turkey it would be enhanced even more. I would rate the "Chris' Special" poboy a 6 out of 10 overall. The service was good, place was clean. What disappointed me the most was that they no longer offer the bread pudding, which is my weakness and probably 60% of the reason I stopped here after reading in Ted's review that it was "great". They now are offering some chocolate cake concoction that I passed on. The price was mid-range. The parking needed improvement. I'll go with a four star rating, even though they don't have the bread pudding anymore.

I just ate here for the first time, and it was very good. I had a shrimp po boy, and it was great! The shrimp was nice and crispy. My only complaint was that it was just a tad too dry. There was an older dark-haired woman there that was so sweet and friendly; however, the young girl who took her place was not nearly as much. She pretty much ignored me once she started working, but I don't think that she was doing it maliciously. I think it's probably just a laid back type atmosphere, so she probably thought I was just hanging out. Anyway, the only other negative thing that I can think to say was that they did not have bread pudding, and after reading another review stating that it was great - I was a little disappointed. The prices are very inexpensive, and it was quite clean. I would definitely return, especially to try the gumbo or other po boys.

I won't pretend to be a po'boy expert, but I thought Chris' was very good. My boyfriend brought me here. It was a favorite place of his when he was growing up. I got the shrimp po'boy, and thought it tasted great. The cabbage (I think it was cabbage) was very crispy/fresh, and the bread was very soft. We ordered to-go, and it came out really fast. The dining room isn't too fancy, but a great plce to grab a quick bite to eat.
