The food and margaritas here are consistently good. I crave the tortilla soup! Service is always quick and attentive. It's family friendly but also great for a ladies night. The doors are a little weird but if you can find your way in, you'll find it's worth it!

Mexican Food at its Worse in Prison This review is about this location but the food as I remember is applicable to all the locations. The place has a front door on a main street but you can't get in through there. You have to go to the back door to get in. What's worse is when you ready to leave through the back door it's locked. Someone has to unlock it. I complained to the manager when I got there about having to walk around to the back door as a handicapped parker and all she could tell me is that there are signs saying come to the back door. Another killer is the happy hour. Which should be better named as the UN-happy hour. Only drink for happy hour is if you like Margaritas. Trust me, there are plenty much better Mexican food places than this that you can enter and leave like a normal restaurant. I got the fajitas --Nothing to brag about, trust me.

The main entrance is on Hickory Avenue even though they have parking on both Hickory and Dickory sides of the restaurant. This space has been a revolving door of restaurants over the past couple of years so hopefully Caretta's will be calling this place home for a long time to come. The interior is bright with fun welcoming colors of pink and yellow. The bar area has a small bar with a few tables for additional seating. They also have a small dining area outside, which is a welcomed addition. The wait for a table for two on a Saturday night at 8 pm was 15 minutes. I like how they ask for your name and number and send you a text when your table is ready so you can wait outside and you won't miss your name being called. As soon as we sat down a server brought us two bowls of salsa and a basket of chips. About 2 minutes later a different server introduced himself as our waiter and took our drink order. When he came back with our waters we ordered a medium (20 oz.) top shelf mango margarita and the chorizo queso dip as an appetizer. The drink was really good and strong! My husband and I split the drink and it lasted us our entire meal. I loved the mango flavor and thought it was really well balanced. The chorizo dip was really good and spicy. If you have had their plain queso then you know its good, but the spicy chorizo sausage really kicks it up a notch. For 10.95 you get a huge bowl, much bigger than I anticipated and we could only eat half of it. For future reference I asked the waiter if they do that same dip in a half size and he said it only comes in one size. That is really the only draw back. I would not get it again if I was only sharing with one other person, but perfect for a group of 4 or more. It was delicious and I hated to let it go to waste. The menu has a bunch of options for entrees, but I like how you can do anything a la carte. Who saves room for rice and beans anyway? My favorite is enchiladas so I tried a few different ones. My husband tried the tamales, beef taco and a chicken flauta. I thought the enchiladas were good and I liked being able to get a variety of types. The pork tamales were ok, the tamale was stuck to the husk so it didn't roll out. Scraping it out made it fall apart and there was more corn than pork. The service was very good. Our server was courteous and answered all of our questions about the menu. He checked on us a few times to see if we were still enjoying ourselves and asked if we needed anything. The food also came out really quick! We didn't have our appetizer long before the rest of our food came out. I always found the Veterans location to be fast so this one seems no different when it comes to speed and accuracy.

We first saw the restaurant with an empty parking lot from Dickory and thought that maybe it was closed. Luckily we realized that the main entrance is on Hickory. Pretty confusing! I frequent the other Carettas location pretty often and was glad to find this new location. I'm sure it's because it's new, but it just seemed so much cleaner. The service was excellent. Salsa was good. Chicken quesadilla was awesome. My friend's steak nachos looked good and were very large for a small. Prices are awesome! I would say it's a very similiar experience to the other Caretta's except the place looks a little nicer and cleaner.

Best Mexican in town. We always get ground beef and chicken tacos. The Sopapillas are to die for. We come here at least once a week. Love!!!

I feel like I'm in some sort of alternate universe reading these reviews. Is is possible that there is more than one Carreta's on Hickory in Harahan? I've only been to this location once but doubt I will return. The location itself is confusing. But everything in that area is confusing to me, so that doesn't impact my rating, I'm just throwing it out there. There is parking on both sides of the building, but only one entrance. Which, isn't really a big deal unless you happen to arrive during a torrential downpour and park on the wrong side without an umbrella and are running around trying to find the door... The service was fine. Not outstanding, but good enough. The food though... it was just bad and 100% the reason for my rating. It all started off on the wrong foot when a basket of stale, old chips landed on the table. But I wasn't there for chips, so I let it go. I ordered fajitas, which I have had about 100 times at the Carreta's on Vets, so I figured I knew what to expect. Wrong. I got was a sizzling platter of weird, mushy, mystery meat that I'm pretty sure they cooked in the microwave. Not reheated in a microwave, cooked. And, then there was the little foil packet of tortillas... you know, the ones you open and expect to be all warm and fresh? I guess they were out of fresh that day because mine were hard and dry, like they had been sitting out on the counter for a couple of days.

I came here with a couple of coworkers - if you park on Citrus be aware that the entrance is actually on Hickory and you need to walk around the corner to enter. I was with about seven people at lunch time and it was not very busy. Our food came out pretty quickly and was very tasty - I didn't try the chips and salsa, but the chips were very yellow - something I do not enjoy. I ordered the chicken fajitas and my meat came out about 5 minutes after everyone else had their food. It was a little on the oily side but was very tasty. I would go here again during a work lunch if someone else suggested it, but not any other time.

Phenomenal margaritas, friendly waitstaff, and very very quick service. Absolutely no complaints. Sometimes I stop in just for a margarita to go!

Food is kinda generic American-ized, Taco Bell-ish. Best Margarita in Metairie! But I wouldn't drive across town to go here. Great party, met up spot for after work get togethers. Ladies night pre-game, etc.

My favorite local Mexican restaurant! The service is good, and the food is amazing. I always get the queso and refried beans appetizer and the salsa is very good as well, but the reason I come here is for the chili reallnos which is absolutely delicious! I also recommend trying the burritos which are large and very tasty! The location is slightly out of the way for me, but well worth the trip. For quality Mexican food at reasonable prices go to Caretta's!

It was decent. Nothing tasted amazing to the point I had to go back again. Stopped in for a bite bc had time to kill in the area and service was good although place was empty, so they were probably on their A game bc of boredom.

I've always gone to the Metairie location and loved it. So when I saw the Harahan location, I was very excited. I've gone to the new location three times now, and I am disappointed. All the elements I loved about carreta's -- the mango margaritas, their guacamole, and their spicy sauce -- is available here too. But, I am disappointed in the guacamole - it has zero spice, and is bland city. When I asked the waitress whether it could be spiced up, she brought us a small plate of raw jalapeño slices! The sauce lacks spice as well. In fact, all the dishes I love in the other location is extremely bland. The waiters are par at best here. They make no effort to help nor do they offer any suggestions. I guess I gave it three chances. I am done now.

Good goeod, prices are reasonable and not so busy on Sunday. However if you approach the restaurant from Dickory you will have to walk around to the back in order to enter the restaurant.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
