My kids love this place and I was very disappointed today. We came in after the lunch rush but it was still very slow. It took several minutes to be seated them even longer for us to get waited on. We had to sit and watch another table who was seated after us get waited on and helped before us. Our waitress only took our order. Other people brought everything else. Then I got our bill before we even got our shakes. We were pressed for time and couldnt finish our shakes because it literally took over 20 minutes to get them and we were almost finished with our meals. The food was great but the service was terrible. Also there are rips in the seats and flies all over the place. There are a lot of other places to eat and will be less likely to come here again based on this visit. I really hope they improve their operations.

6:45pm on a Wednesday, 4 other tables in the place, food was a bit slow, burger was barely warm, bun is similar to something from Wendy's dollar menu. Egg on wife's burger was cooked completely, service was good, based on drinks refilled promptly. Got after dinner, the peanut butter cup is just that, vanilla shake with peanut butter cup crumbles. My suggestion go to Five Guys for a burger and Sonic for your shake. Dint understand people that go to thus place, flavorless and boring.

just like the guy said sloooooooooooow. sat 10minutes before anyone came over 10 minutes for the drink. 10minutes no food got time to write this review.

Took 25 minutes to get a shake at 1:30 in the afternoon. Go somewhere else.

Food is great and incredibly cheap. As other Yelpers have noted, the service is inconsistent. It's better to come during the week than the weekdays, as the place is constantly packed on the weekends. Regardless, I will gladly drive here from Slidell to eat here.

Heard a lot about this place will never go back. Took 30 min to place order, 30 min to get food. Never got a drink refill. Service sucks, and food isn't all what people make it out to be.

Good price for an amazing burger. Menu of burgers for burger and fries under $5. Worth the drive.

Wouldn't recommend...definitely avoid if you're in a hurry. Went through the drive through today to get a couple of shakes, gave us wrong flavors (ordered chocolate with cookies and cream, ended up with banana)...went inside and the "fixed" shakes were also wrong and filled only half the cup with shake, the rest with whip cream.. Been there twice so far, first and last. Bottom line, if you go there, you know what to expect...food that's on par with McDonald's but in a different atmosphere. We don't do McDonald's.

The food is always good but the service is always slow, even when the restaurant is empty. Not sure what the problem is. Other Steak N Shakes usually are fast. That's why I don't give it more than three stars.

Was really excited to see a Steak n Shake on our 12 hour drive across the south, went at 6:45 and spent 20 minutes in the drive through without any movement. Had somewhere to be so we had to leave. Came back at 9:35 with nobody in line but people inside, sat and waited for 10 minutes and then went to go inside and they were putting chairs up and giving us evil glares so we turned and got back in the car. I just wanted some French fries and a shake, there are no Steak and Shakes around me and I haven't been able to go to one for over a year. Freakin abysmal service, hope it gets closed down.

Great Food and Service! The other yelpers that have complained are cranks or just expect a lot for $3.99. Steak and Shake is new to this area...and the hillbilly people next to me just said.." this bean crock doesn't taste anything like my red beans and rice" duh...customers are idiots in this area...

This is like a wanna-be-Johnny-Rockets..or more of an upscale Carl's Jr. Service was average and burgers were a step up from a "fast food" burger place. I would give the shakes an "A-Okay". I really was expecting more. I wish they had "steak" fries instead of the skinny fries - which are definitely NOT fresh cut. Our shakes came when were were almost finished eating our meal, but I guess that's okay. Burger with Fries at about $5, but doesn't include a drink...I would definitely prefer the burgers from Five Guys, In-n-Out, or Johnny-Rockets over Steak and Shake. ALTHOUGH, the shake was yummy and my Portabello/Swiss burger WAS good. But, just another average fast food burger place. OH, not too bad with the half-off shakes 2-4pm!

This is my favorite burger place! They get very busy on the weekends and service slows down, but we sat at the bar and watched the kitchen and everyone was working as fast as they could. This is not fast food. It is all cooked to order, so expext to be there as long as you would be at a sit-down place. I love it!

Excellent service and the wait staff was fun tonight. There was a birthday party at one of the tables and boy can the wait staff SING !! Our servers were some of the best servers we'd had recently. They really improve this restaurant's image. That was a blast. We'll be back soon.

I've been twice now. First time was right after they opened, and they were packed, and service was sorta slow. Now that it's settled down, service was good, and food came out in a reasonable time. Burgers were OK. Better than McDonald's, but I'll take Lee's or Chili's over these any day. I like the skinny fries, but they were somewhat greasy both times. I've only had one shake, but again, better than the stuff you get a the common fast food joints. Prices were very reasonable. All in all, a good friendly place for a decent burger, fries, and a shake.

The food is great. The service is the worst on the Northshore.

  • Michael W.

The burgers were pretty good, the waitress and cashier were very friendly, it is cheap and open till midnight. It isn't gourmet food, it is a diner burger and fries. The burger and fries are decent and the service was fairly quick. It is a new place, so they are still working out a few details. For under $5 you can't complain!!

What do you know, my second review and its another trendy, chain burger place. Another (the first was Five Guys) place that had its grand opening about a month or so ago and you need a shoe horn to get in the joint. One happy family sat around a large round table, mom and dad and all 4 kids sporting the official S&S paper hats on their noggins, so that's nice. Our order was taken by a large guy in his late 20's fairly quickly, and then after about 20 minutes our conversation lulled and we noticed we still hadn't gotten our burgers. When they came out, they were warm, but just barely. Why this place is still packed from morning till past midnite is a mystery--if you want better burgers, Lee's is just up hwy 21.

Not up to par! SNS in Tennessee were great, this one is needs improving!

Been there a few times now the second time we went they actually "we ran out of stuff to make shakes" was how we were greeted. Not exactly what I expected since the name of the place is steak and SHAKE. The last time we went our waitress disappeared right after taking our order and our food was brought to us by another waitress. After eating we sat for 30 minutes staring at our empty plates and cups (we actually ate the ice because no one refilled our drinks) a manager cleared half of our table (still no refill) and we sat for another 15 minutes before we could flag down another waitress to find our AWOL waitress who magically reappeared (with an attitude). The food was great but the service made McDonald's look like a michilen star establishment.

Steak n Shake started in Normal, Illinois in 1934. Where I am from they are all over and usually not as packed as down here. I am so happy we finally have one! It is inexpensive and a great value. They're not gourmet but they do have an awesome selection of burgers. The servers are nice and it is kid-friendly. I love their shakes. You can order off of the menu or customize. They have to hand scoop the ice cream, mix it with milk, flavored syrup and toppings so you will wait, especially mon - fri when it's happy hour so just chill ppl!!! Don't be a foodie-snob. These are good burgers but no Kobe nor do they claim to be. It's a good thing. Be open minded and enjoy!

Ate at Steak & Shake today. We didn't really mind the 20 minute wait to get a table because we have been wanted to try this place. There were three of us and my wife and daughter had the single cheeseburgers. I had the Portabella burger. The burgers were fairly good but the single patties were very thin. The bad news? Service was poor, my wife's glass of water had dirt in it. I ordered onion rings and never received them, my daughter's burger didn't come dressed as she requested and the french fries were cold. On top of that, my wife and daughter each ordered a shake with the burgers. We received the food, ate it and sat waiting for the shakes. At one point someone asked how things were and we said we were waiting for the shakes. She promised to check on them. Finally we decided to leave and when I went to pay our check, I told the cashier about the shakes. He called the manager who was "very sorry" for the "craziness" and said he would check on the shakes. Apparently there were two shakes sitting in the window that were supposed to be ours. The manager did take the shakes off our check and gave use the by now melted shakes in go cups. They were disappointing because they were melted. The shakes are better at Sonic.

After having a very successful visit (two visits actually) to Steak & Shake in St. Louis, MO, I was stoked to learn that they were building a location in Covington. However, my visit on 9/20/2015 left me less than satisfied. We walked in to a restaurant that was 1/2 to 2/3 full upon our arrival. However, our party of 6 was seated quickly and our server arrived shortly thereafter. It took well over 20 minutes for our food to arrive, and in the interim, I was trying to entertain a hungry 3 year old who doesn't truly comprehend the word patience. However, my thought was that Steak & Shake didn't quite comprehend the term "fast food". I counted no less than 11 people behind the counter, therefore, it looked as it the store was sufficiently staffed. My "royale" burger was not as good as the Steak & Shake burger I remembered from St. Louis. It wasn't bad, however, it just wasn't memorable. The fried egg on top of this double meat burger was definitely the highlight of the visit. However, the French fries tasted as if the grease was way too hot because even though the outsides were not burned, the insides were void of all moisture as if they were subject to an internal blast of nuclear heat. Also, these "shoestring" fries are just way too thin. I got a bowl of chili on the side and immediately dumped half of it on my fries in an effort to regain some moisture. I'll admit that it helped, but the chili was absolutely unspectacular. In fact, I'll state right now that a can of lean beef Wolf's brand chili is much better. I was also unhappy that the bowl was extremely shallow, giving you an initial impression that this was a nice sized bowl of chili, when it really wasn't. This was no fault of our server, who tried to do her best to keep our drinks full as we waited patiently for our food. Perhaps if I had ordered a shake at the end of my meal, I would have enjoyed myself a little more and perhaps given a 3-star rating. But with no shake, the 2-stars remain.

Wish we had a Steak & Shake in Utah! High quality food served hot and fresh! You gotta order a shake. Super thick and delicious.

Tori, our waitress was the best waitress. She was extremely helpful and open-minded to our first time dining in. The food was good and the shakes for perfect a very nice place I wish we had near the West bank.

  • John R.

Slow, slow, slow and Greasy! Prices are pretty cheap but thats about all the place has going for it. The single patty burgers are as thin as you can possibly get ground beef and the fries follow the same general style. Fries, burgers and hot dogs all come out covered in a nice layer of grease - yes more than typical with this type of food. The wait simply isn't worth the flavor or quality of food - it's not bad, but compared to other options (Five Guys - or even Burger King or Wendys) it's nothing spectacular. Their shakes are pretty decent, but again in the time it takes them to make one I could probably make three at my house and again they aren't that good to stand around for 10 mins. If you have no other option this place will suffice, otherwise I would suggest finding another option.

Very simple...... Sloooooooow service, took 45+ minutes to receive our order only to discover it was wrong. They forgot our shakes so we had to take them to go. On top of all of that, the Kitchen/prep area was filthy. That was my last visit to the Steak and Shake in Covington.

When this location first opened it was constantly packed. There were giant lines and someone even told me they waited an hour for their burger in the drive thru. That coupled with a co-worker telling me "that place has the best burger I've ever had" led me to believe this place was awesome. Boy, was I wrong. This is a review of their food from the drive thru, which is why I am rating it two stars. The drive thru was fast, friendly and efficient. Unfortunately the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered a standard cheese burger and fries. The burger was nothing special. In fact, it was somewhat flavorless, and a huge disappointment. I guess I expected a fancier burger than I would get at other fast food chains, but to me, it was no better than Burger King or McDonalds. I realize this may be an unpopular opinion based on what I've read in other reviews, but I was not impressed. I will probably give this place another chance based on how many people have raved about its quality, but my experience was far less stellar.

Good service entering and checking out. Both of us said the burger and fries were very good. Shakes arrived late we were over half way done with our meal. They were quite busy - shakes were in demand so getting them late was okay.

I absolutely love it! The food is always consistent and the service is great! I always get the royale steak burger.

It took us an hour to get our food.. Understaffed and tons of angry customers.. The patties on my burger were small.. The floors were disgusting.. Need I say more?

It was the worst steak and shack ever don't compare it to the ones in Indiana and Illinois cause it's not every thing was cold and wet the service sucks but that ant a suprize every thing in Mississippi and Louisiana has terrible service has anyone ever seen those clocks that say average wait time is 33 seconds we'll here it would be 33 min

Bit gross inside... Doesn't look like they sweep or mop often enough. They cleaned the table but not the booths... They had left over food and crap all over them... Feel a bit ashamed for not leaving to eat somewhere else... But I knew my 3 year old was hungry... Won't go back

My family gets excited every time we pass a Steak n' Shake because New Orleans doesn't have any. On our way back from Folsom we stopped by. Unlike the other reviewers we were seated quickly and out orders arrived in the proper amount of time, hot and delicious. We chose to postpone our shakes until dessert. Our waitress was extremely attentive and the food was cheap and delicious as always. I will certainly be back.

Food was fresh but order was incorrect. Waitress was pleasant, but a little slower service than would've liked. Just an ok place

Wanted to place a Togo order so I was at the bar area. The manger (I'm assuming because she was the only one not in a button down shirt) was working the counter and ignored me for 10 minutes while she talked to her friends and other employees. I had to get a waiter from another tables attention to take my order. 5 minutes after that the manager finally asked if we were being helped but didn't stick around long enough to hear a response. Not a fan of the initial service at all. The girl that actually took my order was nice, helpful and quick. I give her a 10.. We ordered flavored fries and drinks and they were all good. The manger needs to be replaced.

Apparently people on the north shore have never seen a girl with pink and blue hair. People wouldn't leave my friend alone to eat! They just kept talking about her hair. Telling her how pretty it is. Gah. My hair is pretty good too! Albeit, it is only brown, but whatever. I HAVE GOOD HAIR TOO, NORTH SHORE FOLKS. Aaaanyway. Shoe string potatoes aren't really my thing, but these were ok. I feel like the prices were pretty good. Staff - friendly. Gina, our waitress, even handled our ridiculous indecision with finesse and professionalism. I had the Frisco Melt - which is a patty melt but with Frisco Sauce. Which is secret sauce, which is 1,000 island dressing. JUST FYI. It was pretty buttery. Which I guess is their thing? Also, A1 sauce is a thing they have here. The paper towels are too rough to use as Kleenex. My nose hurts.

Good fast service. GREAT STEAK BURGER!!! I got the double king royal. It was amazing for a burger. Great little place. Will go back to it again.

I lived in the Midwest for about 10 years where Steak 'n Shakes abound. There, SnS is known for being just a notch above your typical fast food burger joints. The lone Louisiana location in Covington is not up to par with other SnS I've experienced. I've passed this location many times while travelling I-12 and have never made the effort to stop. However, I was recently in the Pinnacle strip mall where it is located and decided to drop in for a burger. It looks like a SnS, but the food was a disappointment. The bun on my burger was stale -- so hard and dry that it broke apart when I cut my burger in half. The fries had a greyish brown tint and tasted like overused cooking oil -- completely inedible. With all the great burger places around, don't bother with this place. Save a real SnS experience for when you travel north.

    (2)
  • Paul S.

If I didn't love SnS, I'd never come here. It's the slowest I've ever been to. Good food, but be prepared to wait. And wait. And wait.

This place reminds me of my days living in the midwest where Steak and Shake's are in every town. The wife(now ex) and I would go here whenever we had to drive to town to get groceries. (Yes, I lived so far out in the sticks that getting groceries was an event). Come to think of it Steak and Shake may have been the only bright spot in that whole experience. So when I hear that the Northshore was getting one, I was stoked! The kids and I finally got around to going this past weekend. They were stoked as well as everythime they visit my parents in Indiana they want to go here. We got here about 1:30 on Saturday and grabbed 3 seats at the counter and waited....and waited.....and waited.....took a nap and waited some more. The place was busy but I watched about 500 burgers get made in front of me and unless everyone in the place ordered 10 burgers each then something was amiss. The manager even came by and apologized a few times for the delay. I think out waitress forgot to enter in our ticket. Oh well it happens. The burgers are on the thinner side which I like and are cooked on a hot griddle. The fires that acompany it are of the shoestring variety and always crunchy. Their milkshake selection is huge and always served in those old timey frosty glasses. I'm sure i'll be back again but next time I'll bring a pillow just in case.

  • Stephen T.

Well definitely not the friendliest staff. Bad management that doesn't focus on customer satisfaction. Tried to call in an order since they take 30 minutes to get the food ready and was told they can't do that... Get with the times people. Also, they hung up on me.

    (1)
  • Scott H.

Slooooooooooooooooow service. I guess they are going for the fine dining experience, having a hostess and all. But realy, this is just another fast food joint, minus the "fast". I've tried this place twice and don't really care to try it another time. Each time the service was slow even though the majority of the tables were empty. Sometimes I will pass here on a Friday or Saturday night and the line will be out the door. I just don't get it. the food is ok, but not worth the wait. Portions are small and each time, everyone's frenck fries were pretty cold when they arrived at the table. If you decide that you want a shake after placing your order, be prepared to wait at least 10 minutes for them to fix it and deliver it to your table. There's other options close by that have better service and bettter food. Save your time.

A big thank you to your staff for keeping my daughters purse safe and secure after she accidentally left it there after lunch on Saturday! It's a wonderful feeling to know that you have true, honest employees!! 3 days later, when we finally made it back, she said, "even my money is still here." We will definitely be back to thank y'all!!'

I was never a huge Steak n Shake fan while living in Indiana. It's your typical fast food fare. However, now that I don't have one within 5 miles of my house, it's more of a novelty. I decided I wanted a milkshake. Skip the food, but they do have some kick ass milkshakes. I love the chocolate strawberry one myself. The fiance enjoyed his mint cookie milkshake. I can't say I enjoyed the approximately 30 min wait in the drive thru, but I think this place just opened recently. Much like every other chain in the area, the hype will wear off soon enough and it will be less busy.
