Wow. If I had to choose one word to describe it, it's Wow! Fresh, delicious and authentic, love the carne asada blue corn tacos, and the quest fundido with chorizo was amazing. The chicken tortilla soup was so good I had to buy a double order to bring home! While not a large place, it's well worth it.

Unique and edgy. This Mexican joint is certainly top on the list in terms of northshore Mexican cuisine. Went with the "habanero's" tacos that included a blend of carne asada and chorizo. Topped with roasted onions, sour cream, and guacamole... Excellent flavors and excellent presentation. Well done!

Finally authentic, interesting and REAL Mexican street food! Delicious red snapper tacos- fresh fish, perfect seasoning w/pico de gallo. Tried the cactus, flank steak and cheese tacos that are soon to be a menu item. Nice side ( included fresh guacamole, roasted onion and a whole charred jalapeño) Delicious!! This is our new go-to place!

So far, the best Mexican we've had since moving to Louisiana. Coming from SoCal where nearly every spot is decent to great, we'd heard it was hard to find good Mexican here, and so far it's true. Habanero's is a little different from your typical Mexican spot, kind of hipster-ish in a way? But really good food, decor and service, nonetheless.

This restaurant never disappoints! The staff is extremely personable and friendly and go out of their way to make you feel as if you are in their home to eat. The food is deliciously fresh and authentic and unique. The eating area isn't large which suits the restaurant perfectly. By far the BEST Mexican Restaurant on the Northshore. The skinny margarita is perfect. My personal favorites to eat include the Playeros and Caribenos. If I'm eating quick and light the Ceviche is great. And if your watching your carb intake order the La Roka.

Good for tacos and, I'm so excited, sopes. You never see sopes on a menu in Louisiana. I got the shrimp sope and while it's listed as a side, it made a nice lunch for me. Thick corn sope that wasn't too soft or too crunchy with beans, romaine (fancy!) and fresh cheese. Not the greasy iceberg and shredded cheese of the 24 hour Mexican places in Chicago (which I'm not knocking, those are delicious especially at 2am after a drinking and dancing.) Like everyone says, it's Fresh! Shrimp were nicely seasoned and grilled. Greg's fish taco was good. The enchilada he got was not baked, just a tortilla rolled around filling with sauce on it, but this isn't that kind of Mexican. Try the queso fundido only if you have a lot of people bc it's a lot of melted cheese- it's super yummy, gooey cheese- we got the mushrooms which were a little garlicky (a good thing) and cooked well- but again, it's a lot. Pico was good and salsa was just ok. I'm going to crave that sope for weeks to come which is fine because you can't beat $5 for lunch!

Excellent. The place is cozy but comfortable. We had the Habaneros tacos, the Enchiladas with steak and the top shelf margarita La Chingona. Everything was top shelf! I have never had such wonderful enchiladas. Our server was super helpful. We will come back again!

You can tell when a place has "it", this place definitely has it...authentic Mexican food, incredible owners and staff. Hands down, my favorite place to eat in Covington...I actually crave it. The owners and staff make you feel like family and the food is perfect, not overly seasoned, always satisfying and never greasy. The dining area is small, but I wouldn't change a thing if it meant the overall experience would suffer. We've been eating there for the past 4 months and there have been times that we've eaten there 3 days in a row...that should say a lot. If you're looking for real Mexican food, this is definitely as good as it gets. EDIT: I have to say I was confused as to why someone would give Habanero's 1 star and a negative review, especially since almost every review is favorable, then I realized they're upset because it's more expensive than Taco Bell...well, pretty much everything is more expensive than Taco Bell. You get what you pay for and everyone knows Taco Bell is the lowest form of food. Also, the fact that the reviewer said there were "no beans" is also inaccurate, the Charro beans are incredible as well as the re-fried beans and rice, so that alone is misleading. They are both listed on the menu which you can see in the photos.

First impressions the place is very clean, our server was nice and knowledgeable and the food was tasty. I had the Flautas while my coworkers had the burrito and taco plate. One thing that stood out was the salsa and chicken tortilla soup. We will be back.

Stumbled upon this little gem TOTALLY by accident and couldn't be more thrilled. Staff was incredibly friendly, service was prompt. Food presentation was well above the norm for Mexican restaurants. Temperature, textures, flavors... All spot on. The habaneros tacos were incredible -- the chorizo was certainly some of the best I've encountered. Contrary to many other more common tex-mex restaurants, Habanero's serves their tacos street style. Two tortillas (corn or flour, respectively), everything on the side so you can garnish to your preference. And they have beef tongue. Say no more! Excellent. I would highly recommend this place to locals as well as travelers on the road. It is conveniently located close to the interstate.

The wife and I stopped by for lunch and had the red fish tacos on blue corn tortillas. They were good but could have used more spice/flavor. They were a little dry. Came with tortilla soup sour cream and pico. See photo. Service was great, food was fresh and prices moderate. Will try it again but maybe something different.

Absolutely phenomenal and unique place you really need to go and try it. Incredible selection. I had to get help to finally make my choice. Really unique and diverse selection of tacos. Excellent margaritas. The food presentation was novel and top notch . I am not doing justice. I will be returning for great drinks while I work my way through the menu. I have used yelp for years and never written a review. This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review. My only complaint is that they are closed today and I can't return to get my fix. Thank you Habaneros!!!

Just moved back home from the Houston area & found this gem! Authentic Mexican food and it's delicious! One of the only restaurants open on the Northshore on Sunday's too! Give it a try! Wonderful little place!

Based only on my first meal, but there will be more to come: The ceviche and guacamole are delicious and fresh. The Habaneros tacos with asada, chorizo, and a sort of onion relish provide a great amount of heat and flavor. I look forward to trying out some other of the unique taco combos!

I was thoroughly impressed with the menu selection and the wonderful Margaritas. We happened upon this restaurant after a long weekend soccer tourney in Hammond, and not wanting to make the drive back to Slidell for a long lunch break between games. It was the best thing that could have happened to us (food wise) that weekend. We lost (closed for unknown reasons:( )our lone decent Mexican restaurant in Slidell about 6 months ago. It was nice to find a Mexican restaurant with an awesome food selection and a wonderfully prepared Margarita. A Margarita for me, will make or break a Mexican restaurant for me. Habanero's did NOT disappoint!!! Give it a try!! We're glad we did!! It's five O'clock somewhere, right?

Quite possibly the best authentic Mexican restaurant on the North Shore. Everything was great, from the decor to the food. I had the playeros tacos. I have never been so full from 3 tacos!

HOLY COW!!!!!!! This place rocks!!!!! Fresh new mexican dishes!!! I ordered carnitas tortas, which is essentially a Mexican poboy! The carnitas literally melts in your mouth it's so tender!!!! The avocados on the torta was so creamy!!! I also ordered shredded chicken tostadas and those were fabulous!!!! The wait staff was extremely friendly and courteous!!!! This has officially become our new place to eat Mexican food!!!!

Really good food. Salsa was a good indicator. Husband and I had street tacos and they didn't disappoint.

Shrimp tacos with jalapeño, bacon, and cream cheese were excellent. Nice people too. Wish they had some better lunch specials that included their specialty tacos under $9.99

I ordered a suppose to be barbacoa quesadilla and it was everything but a quesadilla I asked the lady was it suppose to be served in such a way and she said yes. Let me explain it was a 12inch tortilla dry meat no sauce no nothing no cheese or anything. I asked the server was it suppose to come with anything other than meat and bread and she said no... I had to ask for salsa sour cream pico . They didn't even cut it or anything. I was very disappointed. Although the service was OK the food presentation was poor.

Very good Mexican food. I thought in moving to the north shore I was going to have to travel to New Orleans to get my fix, but this place does the job just fine. They have this amazing habanero salsa and street tacos have all the right flavors. I got their top shelf margarita on the rocks (can't remember the name) and it was made perfectly. First time at a restaurant I try the Rita's at least once, usually they are way too sweet or they use some disgusting mix. Not here. We will be back for sure. My only criticism would be their barbacoa meat isn't traditional barbacoa meat. Not a big deal, I just won't order it again.

This place was expensive, not spicy (even the habanero salsa), and was not vegetarian friendly. They don't serve beans. They didn't have or offer any extra salsa. Across the street, they have fire sauce at least.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
