I've been there twice. Had the same waiter both times. He's very polite, nice, and quick. The shrimp fajitas are really good. Salsa's good. The only thing better are the Mexican restaurants where they have homemade tortillas and tortilla chips. That's the only reason why they didn't get a 5. I've been spoiled.

Disappointing food discourteous service, inconsistent food. Wildly varying prices. They all claim to be different restaurants with the only way to tell them apart is la or the... Anyway, this one is the worst one don't go here!

This place is very popular with North Shore families. In fact, they tend allow their offspring to have complete run of the place. OK, that's a ding to the clientele but perhaps restaurant management should take note - I really don't care for my chair to be kicked by unsupervised children. Also, children running around unsupervised is a bit of a hazard to the otherwise very good wait staff. OK - I got that out of my system - The food: meh. Mediocre at best. Very generic Mexican food. The chips taste a bit stale. The salsa is bland. Maybe that's why parents like to take there kids here - the spice level is lower than your average Micky Dees. Nawh - moms come here so they can get blatto on Margaritas while their offspring run amuck. So why I am giving this place two stars? XX on tap and it's really, really cold. Bottom line: if you like bland Mexican food and screaming out of control children you will love this place. Oh - did I mention? It's VERY good for kids.

The flautas are great and they seem to have fixed the portion problem.

Our meal here was perhaps the worst we have ever had. The entire experience felt surreal, as if at any moment someone might pop out from the back and yell, "Surprise! It's all been a big joke!" Sadly, that did not happen and we actually had to pay for this meal. We asked our waiter what was especially good or popular, but he said he was new and had only eaten one item on the menu, so was of little help. He did say the Mexican style dinner was popular, which from the description sounded like maybe shredded roast pork. My husband ordered that. I ordered two enchiladas, a la carte--a shredded chicken and a shredded beef. When asked about sauces, the waiter said that they come with "the ordinary red sauce that comes on all Mexican food." While we waited for our food, an authentic sounding Mexican band began playing rather loudly. They were actually pretty good, but the yelping noises did sound a little out of place in a strip mall in small town America. It was then that I noticed that the patrons were almost all families with several small children, some of which were being a little rowdy. The other patrons didn't seem to particularly appreciate the music and generally ignored it. It did require them to raise their voices even more in order to speak to and correct their children, though. Upon looking on the Carreta's website, I realize why the other diners were mostly large families: Wednesday night is family night where children eat free. Ahh... The food came quickly, perhaps too quickly, I thought. And, my order was incorrect. I received a cheese enchilada instead of the shredded chicken, along with the shredded beef. They had little filling, but a lot a red sauce covering them. Oddly, there was nothing on top to garnish, such as cheese, guacamole, sour cream or the like--just two small enchiladas floating in a sea of very thick red sauce. This might not have been so bad if the red sauce had a good flavor, but it was very strong and tasted nothing like enchilada sauce. It actually tasted very much like tomato paste with a lot of added salt. It was almost too salty to eat. The Mexican style dinner featured a very tough whole pork steak that my husband had trouble cutting and eating. The potatoes that accompanied it, however, were soft and tasty. He ate only one bite of the cheese enchilada side dish, before abandoning it. We tipped the band well for the entertainment and also the waiter, who if not experienced, was attentive and honest. Now I see why he hadn't eaten much from the menu and was reluctant to recommend anything. A few hours after this meal, I was quite ill with a stomach bug, though it may have been a coincidence and not the food. Needless to say, we will not be eating here again, EVER.

Wonderful first experience! Rigo was so informative and welcoming. Husband had the Carnitas and I had the California Burrito. Yum! It also looked like the Margaritas are incredibly popular. Salsa is so good - a must! Upon leaving Rigo asked why I hadn't tried the Margarita and stated I was saddened I hadn't since I noticed most patrons had one. Rigo then surprised me at the end of the meal with a to-go cup of their Strawberry Margarita!!!! He went above and beyond! Definitely returning!!!

This location has not been improving. Those who follow my reviews will understand my full meaning when I say that Taco Bell might be a better choice at the moment.

Best chips and salsa on the northshore, but it generally stops there. the tex mex stuff is not bad, but the fajitas are truly awful. it is a combination of low quality meat, overly shredded, over-cooked and with little flavor.

This place needs to be on Kitchen Nightmare! 1. Guacamole is from a mix. They didn't even doctor it up. No flavor at all. Gross. 2. The dinner came way to quick, we knew something was odd. Basically, they heated up the food on the plate and served. So, the cheese enchilada was very plain and boring. The chili relleno was rubbery (and also bland)- I'm thinking they fried a whole bunch up this morning- or they were frozen- and just heated it up. 3. The shrimp flauta was like fishy leather. Two corn tortillas wrapped around little pieces of overcooked shrimp (with no flavor) and fried- no cheese, no sauce, just dry shrimp. Bleh.

The food was okay, but service was terrible! We had a large group, so we expected slow, but not RUDE. Half of our drinks didn't arrive until the meal, and when we asked about them the waiter said, "Chill, I'll get to you in a minute!" Wouldn't refill our chips and salsa, and mixed up several orders in the group. They brought out items that didn't belong to us and didn't bring out items that were ordered. The waiter whispered to other waiters and pointed at us. Waiter checked us out and continued to make snide remarks to us. I paid 15% tip, but I shouldn't have. If a tip is expected, good service should be expected too. Will never eat here again!

Not as good as competitor la caretas in Hammond, but still a decent place to get white queso dip and some margaritas. Jose house margarita happy hour m-f 2-6 $3 each. Good lunch specials. Had chimichanga and added shredded lettuce, avocado and sour cream on the side

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
