The atmosphere and out-of-the-way location seems to big appeal here. The decor is much like Cracker Barrel. It has square tables and hard chairs. I had the roast beef, which was tough and overpriced. The mashed potatoes tasted reconstituted and the coleslaw was very plain. With tea the bill was $13.49. The atmosphere, location, and servers were very good, but the food was a disappointment.

Good stuff. Liked the country ham, and fried whitefish, as well as the fried green tomatoes. Perfect spice on the tomatoes! Definitely a fun place to dine. Try not to go in at the end of the night. The wait staff tends to get a little upset ; ) Will definitely return.

Have been a customer of Our Best almost since they opened, but only visit every other year since I don't live in KY. My family from the small town of Smithfield. This is a "real" Cracker Barrel. Corn bread and desserts off the charts great. I normally get meatloaf, fried chicken or the fried pork chops. Can't miss with any of them.

My girlfriend and I ate there this evening, and while the food was overall edible, it was nothing great either. Having grown up I the South, I've had my fair share of home style southern cooking enough know what it's like, and this ain't it. My girlfriend ordered fried chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes, while I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and corn. The server was a nice young man who was pleasant, but when my girlfriend asked for a new yeast roll to replace her first one that was small and hard, he brought her another of the same. Her chicken was bony and greasy and the sides were obviously from a can (as were mine) and lacked flavor and my meatloaf was tasteless and was essentially meat doused in ketchup with no seasonings at all. Again, it was edible but also utterly disappointing, especially for the price. For dessert, she had coconut meringue pie which was good, but not spectacular, and I had the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. It tasted tinny and canned, but sadly this was the best part of my meal. The decor of the restaurant was as tacky as the food, with thousands of business cards thumb tacked to the wall, and was very dusty. While I don't think the place is so nasty you should avoid it at all costs, I wouldn't go out of my way for it either. Two stars and I'm feeling generous with giving it that.

I had the opportunity to eat lunch at Our Best yesterday. The menu has many delicious choices, reasonably priced and a separate extensive lunch menu. I've eaten here before and have enjoyed many of their selections especially the fried pork chops, my favorite. Today I had the flounder with two sides. It was a very mild, tasty fish. The sides are all home made and delicious. Each order is also served with fried cornbread pancakes. Most of their items are fried, but the breading is light and crunchy. The service was very good and the friendly young lady server made sure we had our food serviced hot and timely. If you like Southern home made cooking I highly recommend Our Best.

We went to the location Smithfield Rd out near LaGrange, I won a Giftcard at An Event to Remember Wedding Show in Shelby County (awesome event). Thus we decided to check it out. The best I have to say is that I got a free meal that I didn't have to clean up from and a nice drive in the country. We ordered the fried green tomatoes for the appetizer, they were unseasoned and for $4.00 we got 4 tiny slices of tomato that were served with flavorless, dry cornmeal pancakes. He ordered the meatloaf meal, which was completely unseasoned and basically hamburger meat baked with ketchup on it. I got the fried chicken meal. I was served 2 tiny pieces of chicken, a dry wing and a tiny, greasy piece of thigh. The sides were clearly out of a can, the gravy was from a powdered mix. The "award winning homemade yeast rolls" tasted like they were frozen and then re-heated in the microwave. The first one I was served was hard as a rock, I indicated as much to our server who took it back and brought me another rock hard, nuked roll. The desserts were their only saving grace. He got the peach cobbler (which also seemed out of a can), it was decent for what it was. I got the coconut meringe pie which was actually pretty good. The crust was well made and flakey, the meringe was light and fluffy and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The restaurant itself wan't the cleanest, it was extremely dusty and the overall decor consisted of thousands of business cards thumbtacked to the walls. I do have to say that while the food was sub-par, it was served quickly. The wait staff was friendly and kept our drinks filled. I wouldn't go there again, but if you are in this part of town and starving, it won't give you food poisoning.

Since my husband and I hadn't been able to visit Our Best Restaurant at Smithfield, Ky on our last visit to Kentucky, we made sure we had dinner there a few days ago. I had fried catfish and a double side of fried green tomatoes. My husband had chicken livers, and one of his sides was kale. Desserts were butterscotch pie and blackberry cobbler. We enjoyed the decor and our meals, and the young woman who served it, enough that we decided to go again the next night, figuring we'd never get down there again. Bad idea! Our meals were disappointing. The fried chicken was no good, and definitely wasn't freshly cooked. The haddock my husband ordered was dry and the rolls and corn cakes were cold. This time we skipped dessert. A sorry experience.

I would definitely agree that this would be The Real Cracker Barrel. Antiques decorating this lobby and walls, a real country porch complete with old church pews to sit on. Exceptionally friendly and courteous staff. Oh, and real sweet tea. It's the south, I mean, they better. I had read the previous reviews and noticed a trend that the best choices were either the fried pork chops, meatloaf, or fried chicken. I opted to go with the fried pork chop (just one), kale greens, and fried green tomatoes. I mean, I can't do everything fried. I need to be able to walk to my car and all. My plate itself looked fairly appetizing, but I was surprised to find that all my food was laying on top of a johnny cake. Yes, a johnny cake. The holy grail of country cooking. I saved this delightful morsel for dessert actually. The crispy cornmeal treat was so delicate and crunchy at the same time that I could hardly believe it. This was worth the trip in itself. They should really just sell these by themselves. The rest of the food was decent. My fried pork chop was tasty, but a little dry inside. The fried green tomatoes were good, but could have used a little more seasoning in my book. The chipotle mayo on the side definitely helped them out quite a bit. The green were surprisingly very dry and unseasoned, which I guess was standard for picky eaters. I was supplied with salt and pepper (and vinegar!) without asking, so they ended up being pretty good after all. Overall, I would call this a decent place to eat. But the atmosphere and location definitely bumps it up a little in my book.

Our Best Restaurant was our personal find for great fried chicken, but after the last visit I'm completely over this remote Kentucky outpost. It's way out there, about 8 miles off I-71, in the country, which is why we loved going there. My latest experience was SO disappointing. Sitting amidst 10,000 business cards thumbtacked onto the walls of this converted grain storehouse is somewhat novel, but without great food and great service, it's just not cool. Their fried chicken is very good indeed, but not so good that it offsets the atmosphere, which is uninspired, quirky country; it also doesn't offset the lack of cleanliness. I need to mention that the dining room floor was filthy on a Sunday at 3 pm, with chopped tomatoes, cheese and other goodies adorning the pine right next to our table. And there was no one in the restaurant except one other table. I lost my appetite for some reason right then; I suppose it's because the kitchen is only 20 feet away. I ordered the special of bean soup (bland beyond belief) and a pork chop plus fried corncakes, for 6 bucks. Just ok on all three items but the price was right. I can't recommend but I likely ordered the wrong item. Gotta tell it like it is. Service was really, really bad; our server was so nice and apologized 5 times for making us wait so long for every single food item.... and for disappearing for long stretches, but the damage was already done. Bottom line: the thrill is gone, so no more exerting the extra effort of a side trip to revisit.

My wife and I stopped in mostly to get out and take a motorcycle ride, so the location was part of the experience. Fried chicken was outstanding! Green beans also very good. We chose chocolate pie for desert and definitely chose wisely. The crust and meringue may have been the best we've ever had on a pie. No more business cards on walls helps with the decor as well. Great visit!
