What a great place! From the outside it looks small but it is very big and nicely done. The food is amazing, our cocktails very nice. Our waitress was fun and helpful n making our selection. Great for shelbyville

Really great food and service is almost always very good. Some may say this is great Mexican food for Shelbyville but I'd say it's the best in the greater Louisville area. My favorite dish is Conchinita Pibil, really great tasting bbq style pork with beans and rice and we usually trade out the plantains for the Mexican cole slaw because it's awesome. I'm really happy to have a place near home that serves fresh, unique and tasty food!

As I am writing this I am torn between a 3 and 4 star rating and since we don't have the choice of halves I'll go 3. I thought the food was good but nothing to write home about. The pork mole was good but it took a little bit to really enjoy it. There was just something I could not identify with. Mole is so tricky so if you are not a fan to begin with I would definitely pick something else. My wife had the lunch chicken fajitas and said they were decent but again nothing special. The rice however was a highlight of the meal. They do have additional salsas so ask for them if you would like something besides the typical Mexican restaurant fare. We tried the habanero which was good and added some to the regular salsa which made it much better. All in all everyone has their own view on what "Mexican" food should look and taste like. But if you are in the area and in the mood for Mexican give them a try. Side Note: You cannot throw the toilet paper in the toilet.

Very good Mexican food. Pollo Asado was cooked in a mole that was delicious. I can't forget to mention that the portions were so big! I will return to try other dishes. Chips and salsa were nothing to write home about. My colleagues ordered burritos, tacos and a torta...all good and large portions.

Mama's cooking is good very good I had the chile verde plate and it a feast for the eyes and flavor for the tummy The salsa and chips that come with it are great. Thin crispy and a bit of kick in the salsa. the beans were very tasty and tastefully presented. the chile verde, a good sized bowl was very meaty and super tender. The wonderful flour tortillas were thin and warm. Beautiful, I just like the whole meal. and I would be a regular if I live in Shelbyville

Great food and excellent service! This is a fantastic place for groups or a date night - kids are always welcome as well. It is no secret to the locals that Shelbyville certainly has more than its fair share of Mexican food restaurants, but this is absolutely of the best.

Traveling through this tiny town in Kentucky, we stumbled onto this little gem. Authentic Mexican fare in the middle of a small downtown area. Incredible portions. Wonderful flavor. I had a bowl of tortilla soup with fresh avocado and large chunks of chicken. Flavorful and hearty. Burritos also received rave reviews from the other members in our party. Inexpensive. A gem in the middle of Kentucky.

Probably the best Mexican food in the Shelbyville/Louisville area, in my opinion, and I don't say that lightly. When I eat Mexican food I don't just get fajitas or a hard taco, I'll have carnitas, pollo con chorizo, traditional street tacos if they serve them, etc. If you drink, have a margarita, this does NOT taste like the generic mixes that you'll get at many chain restaurants, great flavor, on the rocks, but bring a driver because they don't taste strong, but they are. The prices are reasonable for what you're getting, but it's not inexpensive or cheap, for Shelbyville it's possibly even pricy, but I've paid more for less, so I enjoy it.

Cool atmosphere, fantastic service. I would like to say the best Mexican Restaurant ever but this is my favorite restaurant ever period.

Loved the food. Went with my wife, two kids, and father. Everything tasted fresh and had great flavor. Did not taste reheated, like most Mexican restaurants around here. I had the steak fajitas with corn tortillas. My wife had a chile rellano, and my father had the pork tacos. They both loved their dishes. Chile pepper was spicy and flavorful, and lightly battered. Presentation of food, and the atmosphere was well above that of other places.

Beautiful restaurant, amazing service, food is as beautiful as it is good. Even the margarita glasses were pretty! I knocked my glass of water over and the staff was gracious in spite of my clumsiness. I got the enchiladas rancheras - there is so much food you cannot eat it all! Salsa is hotter and more flavorful than any other place in the area. You have to try this oasis in Shelbyville as soon as possible.

There is a reason the reviews are high...it's amazing! From the salsa to the mole, everything was perfect. The service was also great, and not too crowded for a Sunday. Definitely a gem, and far better than most Mexican restaurants in Louisville. Worth the drive!

Yummy food. I Had the Pollo con Chorizo. Great friendly service and live music. Clean and cozy. Reasonably priced, quick service too

This is hands down the best place to eat Mexican in the area! The guacamole is out of this world, so creamy and the pico adds a perfect spice. I absolutely love the shrimp tacos with cilantro, onion and tomatillo sauce. It's like a bite of heaven and well worth the price.

The service was terrible and the food was mediocre. The waitresses were not friendly and did not check on me. I had to wait so long just to get a refill. It also took a very long time for my food to come out. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

This is hands down the best Mexican Restaurant in Shelbyville. Very nice atmosphere in downtown. Food is very flavorful. Chicken Mole poblano is spot on, I highly recommend it if your looking for an authentic Mexican meal. The price is high in comparison to the other Mexican restaurants in town but only by a couple of bucks. Don't let that stop you from trying this place, believe me the flavor is worth the price.

I don"t know what they put in the refried beans that makes them taste so good. Most places it seems like the beans just take up space on the plate. At Mama's the beans are very creamy and smooth and delicious. I had the carne asada tacos, the meat was very tender and tasty. The rice was also good. It's true what other reviewers say about the margaritas, they are the real deal and quite potent.

Excellent food, friendly service and beautifully decorated interior. Hubby and I shared the Queso Fundido with steak for a light meal tonight. We were both impressed and left satisfied. Definitely will return!

We've been here four times now and have also ordered take out. What a great experience each time! We don't experiment much with the menu, so I can't speak for all of their menu options, but what we've had we have really enjoyed. The margaritas are great, but be careful with the top shelf margarita because they are not messing around. The service is outstanding and super quick, well worth the wait if you hit there at a busy time. Prices are maybe a little higher than other places in town but just as reasonable as the atmosphere, quality, and service are also set at a little higher standard. Hope they can keep it up, as Shelbyville is in need of some good places to eat.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
