Owensboro has some really good places to eat and this one is a favorite for my wife and I. The staff here is friendly and the food is good. The price is also reasonable for the food you get. My wife likes to get the fruit and chicken salad. This dish comes with mixed fresh fruit around a nice helping of chicken salad in the middle. It also has a very good orange moose that is there for dipping. When ever I bring the wife she asks that we go here just for this. I have gotten stuck on the Prime Rib and I'm not normally a big Prime Rib guy. I got it once though and can't seem to shake it. I have had the chicken fingers and they are very good as well. Good house salad and blue cheese dressing. My only criticism is that some times a younger staff member can be a bit aloof, but that is very seldom. Most of thiese folks are very friendly and welcoming. Good place and not a chain. If you get in town you should make this at least one meal.

Had the lite lunch with blackened salmon, seasoned veggies (squash & zucchini), and sweet potato fries. I usually order this when I come and the salmon is always cooked perfectly! Some restaurants struggle with overcoming their salmon, not the case here. The squash and zucchini was perfectly seasoned, not overly salted. Probably the best veggie side I've had in a while. I'm obsessed with these sweet potato fries, never had them any better anywhere else! The reason I didn't give 5 stars is bc the service is hit or miss. This time it wasn't the best, it really depends on who you get. Most of their staff is excellent, a couple would do better working at Denny's. Also, the water tastes like it came from a toilet. Buy a water filtration system!!!!!

My husband and I have been here several times. It has a cool atmosphere and the building has lots of neat architecture. The service is always nice and friendly. My favorite thing to get here is the grilled salmon BLT with caper mayonnaise. It comes with a side and I usually order the wedge salad which is a wedge of iceberg lettuce, homemade blue cheese dressing, tomatoes, and bacon. My husband and I also like to split a 1/2 order of the loaded home fries which is homemade kettle chips topped with shredded cheese, sour cream, and chives. Delicious! My only complaint is that their food doesn't seem consistent. Don't get me wrong, their food can be delicious, but it does feel as if the quality fluctuates between every couple of visits. It could be a difference in chefs, I'm sure. However, we love that they're local and tasty so we will continue to visit!

We had supper last night at this location and it was excellent. We were seated quickly and our drink order taken and delivered within 3 minutes. I ordered the Cajun Blackened Chicken Alfredo, which is one of their early dinner specials which includes drink and chefs dessert, and it was delicious. It had peppers, onions, plenty of chicken in a creamy Alfredo sauce. I wish it had been a tad spicier though. It came with a great salad starter which had cold, crisp lettuce, hard boiled eggs, bacon, and crotons. My wife had the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with onion petals that came with a chipotle sauce and she lived it also. My son had the Third Street Burger with bacon and pepper jack cheese with a side of waffle fries. He enjoyed those also. Service was great and it is a place I recommend.

Cool place! Stopped here for dinner with a coworker after a long day. Atmosphere is nice...older building (can smell when you walk in) located on first floor. Was not very busy at 8pm on Thursday. Waitress was very attentive without being overbearing. We split an order of loaded potato chips (not bad) and I went with a blackened salmon BLT (?!) with onion straws. Thought it sounded interesting...salmon was very good and tender with a nice peppery crust. Coworker went with blackened tilapia and enjoyed it. Overall not a bad dinner...I probably will try someplace different next time in town but would come back here again. Strikes me as a good date night place that I might frequent if I lived in the area.

Stopped in for a late lunch-early dinner with the wife. The place was pretty quite. Ordered up some Gumbo for me and Loaded Potato soup for the wife. both were really good. A splash of Tabasco in the gumbo really made it spot on. We also ordered Nacho's and we enjoyed those as well. Oh yeah, they have the best sweet tea in Owensboro.

It's in an interesting old building on an interesting old street, not far from the riverfront. I liked seeing the sports page above the urinal in the restroom, a very sports-bar thing to do. Saturday lunch was from the express menu, an Applebee's sort of feel to the offerings, from which no alterations appear to be allowed. I don't believe I read that on the menu. Food sensitivities (whether you personally have one or not) are always a great test of knowledge, training, and service. When a request for a gluten-free salad comes to the table minus the croutons (thank you) but with a slice of cheesy bread on top (oh no), you have to take away points. Ditto, when a request for a dairy-free item results in a scene like this. Us: Club sandwich with no cheese? Them: We make them up in advance, they all have cheese. Us: Is it melted on the sandwich? Them: No, you can take it off. No help from the server on that sort of thing, though she patiently watched us perform surgery on a sandwich with a knife and little cocktail napkin, looked at (but did not remove) the pile of cheese created, then asked if was going to be all right. Polite but passive, apparently untrained to handle situations like this in a more hospitable way. I'd like to have something complimentary to say about food and service, but "we survived" is the best I can muster.

Yelped this one while traveling to French Lick IN on the last leg of our vacation. Located in a great part of hopping Owensboro Kentucky--so cute!. Great food, great ambience, great wait staff (thanks David(?))! The proprietor also came over to see how we were doing. All in all a great experience!

Been here 3 times during the last couple trips to Owensboro and I haven't been impressed. I decided to give them another try tonight because they were so close to my hotel but I will definitely not be coming back. I personally did not enjoy the food, but I don't eat red meat, pork, or chicken so my options were limited. I have tried the salmon, Cajun shrimp linguine pasta, and the vegetable plate (what a joke!). Also, didn't appreciate that they simply picked out bacon out of my salad when I ask for replacement- I mean come on how much can a side salad really be costing them that they couldn't just make me a new one with no bacon. Not cool!

  • Cathy C.

Service was mediocre. Server was always in a rush. The rice was obviously left over. I wouldn't serve it as leftovers at home...hard pieces of rice. Salmon was close to being burnt. All in all not a great experience.

I had heard some great things about Colby's from locals that I worked with and perhaps had too high of expectations. Believing they had a full bar, I ordered a Manhattan which the bartender apparently didn't know how to make, yet my server persisted in trying to sell me a Long Island Ice Tea (which I tactfully said I haven't been into since fake ID days). My meal was good enough, but for $22 I paid what I would for an entree at Bill's or famous Bistro but received something along the lines of Applebee's (or worse). The salad was iceberg lettuce, a couple grape tomatoes, and admittedly good dressing; the entree of a the short rib special was braised with decent flavor but dried out, and the sides came in ramekins like a hospital cafeteria. The banana cream pie was fair but again below what I expected. For the money I would go to Bill's first or famous bistro a close second.

I love the atmosphere at Colby's. The service is always excellent & the food is great. They have a Long Island Ice Tea that will knock your socks off. It's so strong they only allow you to purchase two of them. I got the chicken tenders in buffalo sauce. The portions are large, which is nice since the prices are rather large on some items. Overall, a great place to eat & have a good time with friends. An Owensboro Classic.

Our party of 5 experienced a good lunch service. The server was very friendly and helpful in deciding what some of the people who couldn't figure out what they wanted from the menu. I really like the small touches that gives this place its unique vibe such as the ceiling with the older tile and then the host desk, which is a bit off to the side when you enter looks like a an old dresser. Again, it's unique. The Allegro Pork Chops were seasoned well and I really like the cinnamon apples on the side. It was very complimentary. The Colby's Cobb Salad was also very filling for being a salad. They were generous with the chicken portion. I feel you get value with the food portions from the lunch express menu. We were also there during a class reunion. Clearly this place can handle and host large parties.

Very disappointed with the quality of the food here. The burger was dry and over-cooked, and the condiments looked like they were prepared the week prior. Zero vegetarian options, and the fish was dry as a bone. Service is slow. This place is popular with locals, primarily because there are few good options in Owensboro. Save your time and money. You can get a meal of superior quality at virtually any of the other 500 American food establishments in town.

Excellent food, the ribeye is amazing along with the grilled salmon. The banana creme pie is to die for. The gumbo is great. Friendly staff and love the fact that it's an historical building.

I ate there for lunch today. I ordered the lunch menu pork chops. They were tasty, and a little on the small side. The slaw was ok, nothing to write home about. Food came out pretty quickly. server was pleasant and kept our drinks filled. We had a group of about 10. One of the people in my group ordered the special of cheese grits with something on top (can't remember) but the cheese grits looked divine. Our meal for lunch was about $10 without drinks.

A much better experience than the coffee shop debacle around the corner. We were looking for an average place for lunch as we aren't familiar with the area. This was a little more than what we were looking for but so glad we stopped in. The Tilapia New Orleans was delicious, the fish was not over cooked and nicely flaky. My husband had the Prime Rib and enjoyed it! Thank you!

Sadly as a gluten free vegetarian I didn't have much to choose from, I got a side of green beans (which were great), a plain salad (which was mostly just iceberg lettuce with one tomato), and I shared some french fries. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals, sadly I won't be coming back.

The food was good. Had the cajun shrimp, awesome. Half order of nachos, the chips are delish. All reasonably priced and so were the drinks. Barmaid was in the weeds, but did a good job. Moved to a table to eat and the service was horrible. It was after dinner hour, so I don't know if they short staffed or just lousy service. If the service was on par I'd give it a 4. Cool place.

Colby's is an ok spot for dinner. They do have some pretty good steaks, but their fish is pretty lacking. And what fish they do have, they don't quite know how to cook. This is a pretty standard little restaurant. I'd say some here instead of a chain place but it doesn't really compare to the other gems around Owensboro.

Me and my fiancee were the only two customers in Colbys, and we paid and left.. well as soon as we got out the door a few steps we noticed he forgot his phone.. well we went back inside and a waitress had cleared the table.. we told her about him leaving his phone on the table and she played dumb.. someone there stole his phone and wouldnt admit to it. VERY unhappy with the service.
