Walker’s Grill

I've been eating here since I was really young. Granted the first time I had ever been in the restaurant was a few years ago. I can tell you that the food is just as good wrapped "to go" and maybe better if you consider the grease being soaked up in the wrapper a plus. So, whenever mom took grandma grocery shopping, us kids got to eat Walker's in the car! The grill is right there for everyone to see. You can sit at the counter and watch it all go down. They steam the buns (near as I can figure) in some sort of device they have near the grill. I witnessed it, but wasn't sure what was happening. Regardless, it's good food. You have to like fried though... and lots of grease. They have a pretty good selection on the menu but I always get a burger and krinkle cut fries (got hotdogs when I was little --good stuff). Sometimes I order fried mushrooms. Oh and sweet tea - they have some of the best tea. They don't just have lunch, folks. Breakfast, too! Fried bologna sandwich with a side of gravy for dippin'. Mmm! It's the kinda of bologna that is cut in uneven slab form off a big roll of bologna (Kentucky Border, I would guess). They also have the usual breakfast stuff but I suggest bologna. The place is yellow and dingy from all the years of smoking that has went on there. You can't see inside the windows at all, might be the nicotine stain but the windows might be designed that way. They have deer heads on the walls. There was a rumor that they were closed for awhile but we went in for a closer look and when I pulled the door open there were people (the same people as always) sitting around and eating. Game on! Snuffed out that rumor. My brothers and I eat here every 4th of July before starting our own grill duty... and man, do we ever look out of place. They know we are "out of towners" but they treat us right and serve good food. Not too expensive either. Cash only and pay at the front.

The food while delicious was average Subway, the reason this location gets 4 of 5 stars is the atmosphere. The people were very friendly and the place (especially the bathrooms) were clean. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for an alternative to greasy fast food.

Smokey Valley Truck Stop

Reviews:
I'm driving from California to Virginia. I find this place by searching for "truck stop" on foursquare after nav'ing to a restaurant that turned out to be a foursquare mirage. I'm expecting lots of truck parking, aisles of 12V fun, and blah food. I found none of that and I'm so very glad. They do have a few gas pumps. But then I went inside. I met some interesting people that I am still friends with. I got a great sandwich and several fine slices of pie. I'm very glad Food Network managed to find it too. Thank you serendipity and a name that defies expectations.
I came strictly the Smokey Valley Burger, and I was not disappointed. It's a half pound of beef goodness. Well worth the one hour drive to get here. Want a good truck stop burger, this is the place to go.
I did a review reductively on my previous review. As far as "smokey" (the name fits) restaurants, it wasn't nearly as bad as most Olive Hill restaurants are- I'm pretty sure over 80% of Olive Hill's population smokes. The only reason it's not higher is because I'm including infants. They must have pretty good smoke eaters here because it wasn't very bad. This baffled me because it was past 9pm on a Monday and this place was packed(?!?). They must be doing something right. I almost sneaked into a corner of the place as far as I could get from people. That is always my modus oprandi but even more in smokey environments. It only took them 15min to notice me. I was hoping they wouldn't thus justifying a bad tip. Then I asked the waitress what she would eat. She eagerly recited a litany of stuff that I had no interest in. I always do that but this time I did order stuff I never order because I'm getting too obese and need to cut back my intake. redaction: I have since went back many times, each time getting a different meal. I have loved them all. The roast beef was incredible.
