Long time customer since ZA's opened in 1996. In my opinion this place has the best pizza in Louisville in the year 2015. No matter how often I get pizza here it is always the same in taste and quality. They also have the most reasonable prices of the local pizza joints which doesn't hurt either (.90 cents a topping vs. $2 a topping at Wicks). The pies are thick, the sauce is rich and baked to perfection. Some have complained they put on a lot of cheese which is true, but I personally like that. A lot of staff have come and gone over the years and service has been up and down, but in the last couple years that has improved quite a bit. The girls are always friendly even when they are very busy. Beer selection is always top notch and the very best of all pizza places, compare beer menus and see for yourself. Only knocks I have is the place is in sore need of new furniture as the tables and chairs are the same ones from day one. Chairs at the bar sometimes feel like they could break if you lean back. Outside seating is limited to two or three tables right on Bardstown Road which isn't an ideal situation these days. The bathroom is sometimes very gross and cramped also. That said I do like the rustic atmosphere in many ways. Jim (the owner) also finally replaced the big rear projection TV with a huge flat panel TV a year ago. If you want to watch a game there are two other smaller TVs in the dining room too. A pool room is in the back if you are into that. This is very much a neighborhood place and not a hipster hangout by any means. People that come here just want good beer and pizza, not a date.

This pizza was all like, "Let me get in yo' belly, dog." And I was all like, "But I don't have very much money." And the pizza was like, "You got friends with you. Split me." And then I was all like, "Good idea." And then I said to my friends, "We need to eat Za's Pizza." And they were all like, "Fo' real?" And then I was all like, "Fo' real." And then we were all like, *nom* *nom* *nom*. And it was good.

Za's may not have the absolute best pizza around, but that's more because there are like 3,000 pizza restaurants on Bardstown Road. What it does have is very good pizza (heavy on the cheese and toppings) plus excellent calzones. And a consistently outstanding beer list (had a Bell's Hopslam and a Schlafly Tasmanian IPA on draft last visit, and the bottle list is also superb). It's also got a cozy, lived-in vibe, with wood paneled walls and a big room with a pool table in the back. On warm days, they open up the windows and you can people-watch on Bardstown Rd. You won't be left wanting for much else.

Went last week with a large group for a business lunch and got to sample several distinct pizzas. The Mexican was tasty take on a beef taco pizza. The green onions were a nice touch on top of the pie. The buffalo BBQ pizza was a surprise to me as I would have never ordered it myself - thinking it just wasn't a good idea to combine the two - WOW! Flavor-packed - loved it. The Big Wick I've had before and it's a standard classic to me - LOVE it. Service was efficient and friendly. We got in and out in no time. Parking was a bit of a chore but well worth the short walk from the car to the place.

Service was not good, food took a long time to come out and the meatball sub was dry and not tasty at all. Would not recommend.

Why is it so tough to find a local pizza place with green olives as a topping choice? That was my complaint prior to seeing those deliciously crave-worthy and tangy olives of the green hue on Za's menu. No longer complaining! Their veggie pizza (olives come with it of course!) with the addition of a meat makes for one filling pie. Note that they deliver to places nearby but there's a fee for orders under a certain amount. I think it's for orders under $10. They've also got some good beers on tap and typically run a coupon in the LEO for bread sticks. Even as someone whose not really even that into pizza, I'm sold.

I can never remember why it is that we don't go to Za's more often. The pizza is always delicious! I have had many different topping combinations and they have all been great. The breadsticks are also yummy and the order is enormous!! It's all coming back to me now. We don't go as often because the service while usually friendly is always slow. I am not sure if this is because they never have enough servers to effectively cover all of the tables or if the servers are inexperienced or what. We have been at lunch time, dinner time, and in between times on weekends and weekdays alike and it is always the same slow service. The food is definitely worth the wait but wait you surely will so be prepared!

Zas is my favorite place to go for pizza in the city. Not necessarily because it is the best pizza, which it very well may be, but because it is the whole package! The location is perfect and in the summer it is a great place to sit out front and just experience the area. The food is solid, even if you dont like pizza.

Definitely a hidden gem - on Bardstown! All of the signs that pull you in down the strip of more than you can see at a driving or biking pace on Bardstown Road makes it easy to overlook some cool spots along the way. Za's is definitely one of those. Very chill atmosphere - a good spot to grab a bite or have a few beers. And man, when the weather gets nice again, it is a great spot for drinks on the patio. Definitely another list to come. Tip: if you aren't afraid of veggies, the different white sauce pizzas are AWESOME. The standard is pretty good too, but not nearly the same. And pretty good beer selection. Always good to know.

The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because of the fact that the pizza was a little too cheesy. But still very delicious. and being from the new york area, I have some pretty high pizza standards. The service was awesome, there was only one waitress working, she was also tending bar, and we still got better service than we did the night before at Senor Iguana's.

Ok, so maybe this review is not the best, because I let my husband get BBQ pizza (which I am not a fan of) but I figured why not? he eats what I want all the time, so I'll treat him! So besides the fact I'm not a BBQ fan I'll try and give a unbiased review. Ok, so the crust. The backbone of a pizza! The crust was pretty tasteless, not much flavor and very dry, almost as if it were frozen. I prefer moist crust with flavor. The Sauce. As you know we got the Aloha Pizza with BBQ sauce not marinara so I cannot vouch for their marinara sauce. But we did get the cheese sticks app and the marinara sauce that came on the side of that was good, with a hint of sweet. Cheese! If you don't like cheese, then don't come eat pizza here! This is cheese heaven! I can't even imagine what extra cheese on a pizza would be like! The cheese on the cheesesticks was delicious! With a hint of garlic. The cheese on the pizza was sticky but good! The type of cheese that strings forever!!! The atmosphere is cool and they have a large beer selection. We will prob drive the extra few miles to go to New Albanian Brewing Company Public House.

Za's gets it right. I was in the mood - nay, need - for delicious pizza after the Thanksgiving holiday. I swung by my friend's house in Deer Park (this area of town has a name? Who knew?) and we were on our way. We first stopped in to the new pizza place on Bardstown. They only offered beer by the bottle. Next. Then, we tried getting into Tony Boombozz (sp?). There were crying children and 'billies as far as the eye could see. The wait was ridiculous. Next. Knowing that we needed delicious food and alcohol by the glass/pitcher, our fate was obvious: Za's. SO glad we came in here. There was a decent crowd, but we were able to get a table right away. Our waitress appeared out of nowhere to inform us that they had Bell's Oberon on tap. Yes, please. We ordered a pitcher of beer-y nectar and a 12" Garden Za on whole wheat crust with olives, artichoke hearts and pepperoni. Pleased with our selection, we poured glasses, toasted, started to catch up and --whuh? The pizza is already ready? How can this be possible? Don't ask questions; just eat! And, eat we did. The crust was light yet filling, with crunchy pieces of good-for-you in every bite. The Garden Za was all spinach, garlic and tomato incredible-ness, made perfect by our added ingredients. It struck me, as I ate pizza, drank beer and caught up with one of my oldest, dearest friends a.) how good this pizza was; b.) how good the beer was; c.) how blessed I am to have the same incredible, rock-solid friends I made during high school; d.) what a fantastic Louisville establishment Za's is; and e.) how there really is no place like home - even when it drives you insane. Yes, I got all this from wheat, cheese, spices, veggies and pork products. This is transcendent pizza, y'all. If you come to the Derby City, take a break from Hot Browns and Derby Pies and check out the beer and pizza at Za's. You'll be happy you did. You might even have a transcendental moment...but I am not promising anything.

"Za's is a happy place that fills our bellies" We came here to try a place I'd seen on yelp and that we drive by constantly. One of the other reviews made us expect a dark bar, but we found quite the opposite. What a nice surprise. We each ordered a calzone and ate our hearts out. We love the hole they slice on top so you can see the goodies. We love the buttery garlic outside. We loved the cleanliness and well lit dining room. We enjoyed listening to the chatter at the bar and the music on the jukebox. Za's, thank you for keeping it good and simple. We'll be back. See you soon. Next time: Calzone with bacon, extra cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and artichoke hearts. TIP: they have tons of veggie options.

So far this is my favorite pizza place on Bardstown Road. It's not anything fancy, just a great place to eat great pizza and enjoy a few drinks. I like eating on their outdoor patio while people watching (people watching is my favorite activity on Bardstown). Their pizza is delicious. The dough is thick and fluffy, the cheese is plentiful and the toppings aren't in short supply either. It's just pretty darn good. You should check it out next time you need a bite.

Our very first meal in Louisville was served at Za's. A very old skool dive-y looking joint, the interior of Za's has a dark appearance, tile floors and heavy wood. Andy M commented on the ceiling, which was in desperate need of repair, and said "look how dark & stained that is - you can tell a lot of people have smoked for a long time in here." And so it seemed like a place you might come late on Saturday night to toss back a few beers rather than eat lunch on a nice summer afternoon. We shared the Italian salad, which was lettuce, a few slices of pepperoni, banana peppers, green and black olives. It had been very fresh and good, the balsamic house dressing served with it was very nice. Then I ordered a chicken and artichoke calzone, which I expected to be very small, like maybe the size of a hamburger bun. Instead it was literaly a medium size pizza crust folded over - it was gigantic! I had opted for the whole wheat crust, which was good, but the regular crust on Andy's was better. I was surprised and pleased to see about 20 different toppings for the pizza, as well as the varied selection of sub sandwiches and beers on tap. While not the best pizza I have ever had, I would definitely come back to try some other things on the menu. Except if its in the daytime I might sit outside instead!

I'm so sad that I've received nothing but awful service here! I would love to be a regular here and it's never going to happen with the attitudes from these servers! I spend almost every weekend in Louisville now. It's not been easy to find restaurants that live up to my Chicago standards. I really thought I found something in Za's. They are really in need of a manager that cares about customers. The servers that we have had were either stoned or completely miserable there. Great prices but overall not a terrible loss. The pizza isn't all that anyways.

quintessential dive feeling with pretty bomb pizza. sounds like a winner. there is a large beer selection with pretty good prices. the pizzas are pretty good: doughy, cheesy, and they don't skimp on the toppings. i'm not too fond of the tomato sauce, but that's just a personal thing; don't be dissuaded!

Pizza is decent but beer selection bumps it up to a 4 out of 5. Good service.

We were in the area visiting our son and his wife. Our son is stationed at Fort Knox. They live in Elizabethtown which, by the way does not have one single local restaurant...just a string of run of the mill chain joints...BLAH! Our daughter in law heard that Za's had really great pizza and lots of beers on their menu. There are two things you need to know before reading this review any further: 1) We are from the Chicago area originally and are major pizza snobs. 2) I brew my own beer and am even more of a beer snob! Loved the atmosphere at Za's, very down to earth and homey, kind of like a neighborhood hang out. The beer selection was incredible. I could not believe it: Duvel, Peroni, Skull Splitter, Dog's Head, the list goes on and on. I started with an old standby - Oberon from Bells. But then out of the corner of my eye I spotted the summer specials listed on the place card at the table. Oh my goodness, Robert the Bruce from Three Floyd's Brewery in Munster Indiana. I think this is one of the best micro breweries out there right now. I have never ever seen it on a menu. As quick as I could slam the Oberon, Robert the Bruce was sitting in front of me. I was in heaven! Or, at least I thought I was in heaven until the pizzas came. A "Works" with thin crust, and a "Za Blanca" with hand tossed crust. I thought my wife was going to cry she was so happy with her thin crust. Our only regret was not ordering bigger pizza's because we were fighting over the last few pieces. Looking back we should have hung around for a few more hours, tried more beer and ate a few more pies. Next time we are in L-Ville, Za's is a must. In fact if we are even going to pass by Louisville...DETOUR to Za's!

Thursday afternoon around 6 and there were only a couple of other customers in the restaurant, and one or two at the bar in the back. It was a little warm for my friend, but I was comfortable. Good beer selection (first time I've seen Xingu in this town, although I don't always look for it). Ordered tomato, green pepper, pepperoni on wheat crust 12" which was plenty for two. Delicious. Good waitress. Will definitely go back.

The pizza was delicious and service was pretty good. They have good happy hour prices on beer and makers mark BUT I was a little annoyed that the waitress did not inform us that we couldn't substitute toppings we ordered the "works" pizza and wanted to substitute ham and sausage for extra pepperonis and banana peppers the waitress said that was fin but charged $4 in extra toppings kind of a rip off!! I would go back just be more specific and ask more questions about the menu. Also menu isn't very big so if you want lots of toppings it can be a pricy dinner.

Two stars on Yelp indicates "Meh. I've experienced better" and that is the ideal description for my experience at Za's Pizza Pub. A friend and I were walking around Bardstown Road and decided to eat at Za's becuase the smell wafting from the widows smelled good and the reviews on Yelp looked positive. We went in and sat ourselves at a table. The atmosphere was really dark and the restaurant didn't have any booths. It also seemed kind of dingy. There were paper menus sitting on the table that were absolutely filthy. We ordered a 10" Six Cheese Za. It took nearly an hour for our pizza to come out to the table. During that time the waitress did not check in with us. When the food arrived my friend looked at me and said, "that looks like a frozen pizza".. We both thought that the pizza was incredibly bland. It wasn't horrible but it didn't taste like much of anything at all. The waitress didn't bother to come and find out if we were enjoying our meal at any point or if we needed anything else. Overall I know that there are much better pizza places in Louisville so at $13.00 for a 10" I personally wish I would have skipped this one.

Great veggie pizza on whole wheat crust. Just the right amount of cheese, sauce and toppings and very reasonable priced. Great beer list. It's one of the best pizzas in town and a very fun atmosphere in the bardstown rd-highlands area.

Great Pizza place. I love the Pizza but the last few times I have been there I have had the Calzone. The sandwich's are good too. I have had great service every time I have been there.

My fiancee and I checked out Zas pizza pub on Bardstown Road on a Saturday night. The place was reasonably full, but there were seats available. The server was efficient if not particularly friendly and the Pizza was awesome. We split a Garden Zas since my fiancee doesn't eat pork or beef and it had a great combination of flavors. The sauce was exceptional and there was just the right mix of veggies. The pizza was heavy on garlic (which we love), but might be something for others to think about before ordering. It was also very filling. We had a 14inch and leftovers were more than enough for dinner the next night. We've tried about a couple other pizza places in the area, but so far Zas is our favorite.

Za's is yet another entry in the crowded indie pizza market in Louisville. To me, there is no clear standout among the pizza pack so my criteria are narrowed by fastest delivery of a good quality pizza: Za's does well given those critiera. These folk do a good job with their thin-crust pie. Although I use this outfit mainly for delivery to my nearby home, service on location is reasonable. The stone floors (this was formerly Jockamo's for those old enough to recall) give it a cold feeling in my opinion but I have friends who disagree and spend much of their happy hour time at Za's (drinks are dirt cheap at Za's happy hour). Despite my criticism of the location, the place is friendly and has a wide assortment of beers and the calzones are pretty good.

Definitely a cool local spot for pizza and a great beer selection! Service was a little slow if you're trying to get in and out but a great spot to check out if you're looking to hang out a bit! The 16" pizza was more than enough for the 4 of us!

Za's is right down the street from where we live so convenience is a big factor, especially given that we can walk up there in the snow! Last night, Za's was extremely busy, despite the snow and cold weather, but the experience was great even though they were packed. We enjoyed the great list of craft beer. Last night, my choices were Bells Hopslam and Schlafly Tasmanian IPA - both great beers to have on draft. We usually get the regular crust pizza which is good but can bit a bit heavy. Last night, however, my husband and I got a 12 inch thin crust Aloha and it was a nice change from our regular pizza choice there. The barbeque sauce, pineapples and ham were a great combination, and we ate the entire pizza without feeling like we needed to lay down after. You can also play pool in the back if you're into to that. Overall, this is a great neighborhood pizza place. It can take awhile to get your pizza, so don't go there if you're in a rush. But on a snowy night with nowhere to be, beer and pizza hit the spot. Thanks Za's for being open!

Good pizza - but the delivery on this beautiful day had issues. Email confirming said 90 mins, and to call with any concern. The phone was busy for 20 mins as we tried to cancel. I replied to cancel to the confirming email, and they responded that it was cancelled. 10 mins later a piping hot pizza shows up, missing the veggies we had been charged for... It was still good, but those guys owe me about $5 in veggies!

We were spending the day going from brewery to brewery, and when we hit up Cumberland across the street, we knew it was time to take a break and fill up on some carbs. Other bar patrons confirmed that the pizza across the street at Za's was really good, so this was where we decided to go. The pizza was excellent - pub style pizza, but with fresh toppings (i.e. not canned mushrooms), good sauce, and the right amount of cheese. The beer list was also really good here, though we each only had one as this was supposed to be a point of moderation on our beer day. When I walked down the hallway to find the bathroom, I also found that there's a whole back room here that's full of pool tables!

One of my go-to pizza places - perfect for grabbing a big pizza, pitchers of beer and cheese bread. Service is casual - they don't bother you too much, which is good, and the food is always excellent. They have a great beer selection too, and during the fall, I love to come here and have pumpkin beer and pizza. Best autumn night combo. Sometimes there's a ton of noisy children running amuck but that's not the restaurant's fault. (ps parents: not all people love children - many of us adults would love for you to keep them seated or take them to Chuck E. Cheese)

I've only been twice. I forgot what I ordered the first time (some type of pizza with spinach), but it was good. Great location (parking might be tricky as with many places on Bardstown) but if you're around and about anyway, perfect. Good selection of beer. The cheese pizza I ordered as takeout by the slice was good too. Pretty good prices too! The toppings aren't loaded heavy like Wick's but I like it. Will definitely come back and recommend to friends.

Za's serves some dang good pizza. Just by driving down Bardstown road, I've seen marquees for half a dozen other pizza joints, but I just keep returning to Za's. I've sent a slice to the lab to determine what the secret ingredient that makes it so irresistible. But my hunch is that it is just quality, topping-loaded, tasty pies. The triumvirate of a good pizza is in full effect: excellent crust, tasty sauce, and top notch cheese. Of course, the friendly, neighborhood pizzeria atmosphere helps the cause. And the crack staff that hasn't failed me yet also is a plus. I love the wide variety of toppings allowing me a slightly different experience each time. Huzzah for Za! I pity other pizza places in the Highlands that I really should be at least trying. For now,Za has earned a top spot on the fridge.

We went around 6:30, standard dinner time, and there were maybe 3 tables of people. It took about 4 minutes for our server to get to our table and she brought our waters quickly but forgot about the beer my girlfriend had ordered for about 8 more minutes. We ordered the cheesy bread and the pizza at the same time, the cheesy bread took about 20 minutes to come out and the pizza about 5 minutes later. For this time of day I hadn't expected such a slow service time. Aside from the service, I'm giving a 3-star due to the overall average taste of the food. I simply wasn't impressed and not a single bite made me want to go back. The cheesy bread was better than the pizza. We got chicken, spinach and bacon and all of the toppings were overshadowed by the abundance of cheese. I asked for garlic sauce, hoping it would give the crust some flavor, but it didn't taste like anything at all. Not butter, not garlic, just oil. Overall I really do not think I'll be going back simply due to the bland ingredients and the lack of a "wow" factor during the meal.

Consistently good pizza, service has it's up and downs, but the food is always good. If you're lucky enough to see a table outside I recommend you grab it. A few years ago they served me a wonderful meal during a power outage with candles and flashlights. It made for one of the most memorable meals I've ever had and it displays just how far they will go to try to make customers happy. Beer selection is great and it's a wonderful place to grab a bite and meet up with friends. I only wish I lived closer.

I'm disappointed to say that the excessive wait time for pizza is not dependent on the number of people in the store. We waited nearly an hour for a house pizza with one table out the door and one table behind us. The beer and relaxed vibe allows for tolerability. However, the quality of the pizza and the wait time work against this pizza pub. I'm looking forward to discovering a new pizza place with a more reliable wait time.

Ordered the Works 16inch with no/olives!! Was a hell of a pizza and was just as good leftover for dinner tonight!! Very much recommend Za's to everyone! They also have a very good selection of imported beers which is a must for me. Good Belgium selection as well as others. Wish they has more outdoor seating but you do what you can with the space you have!!

Good location, nice atmosphere. Our order though, on our visit yesterday, took a ruh-diculous amount of time to come out. it tasted good, but the length of time we waiting for the food was problematic. I had somewhere to be at a specific time. Thankfully I was with some friends who were able to cover my check because I had to head out.

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century.
