I came here with a groupon so thankful we saved a couple dollars. We got the Hot Mama, the Rainbow Roll, and the Orange Blossom. I think this place has interesting Korean options like Bibim Bop and Korean BBQ, which if I ever go back again (which is unlikely) I would try. I'm giving the food: 2 stars Service: 2.5 stars (sluggish, but one lady was really friendly) Ambience: 3 stars (nice simple modern decor, one nice thing is they had ESPN on so my hubster could watch the game if he wanted) Price: 3 stars, groupon is a plus Rounding up to 3 stars overall since I saved a few bucks using our groupon. I came excited for some sushi and ready to save some money. One thing I noticed from the menu was that many of the rolls were very affordable. Yay, this seemed to bode well! However, upon closer inspection, I found the reason behind the pricing is because very few of the rolls have actual sashimi in them. The majority of the rolls had either imitation crab or cucumber as a filler or some cheap fish like tuna or red snapper. Meh. The orange blossom arrived first. We got this roll because it had actual raw fish on top. It tasted ok, was heavy on the rice, and the fish on top had messy knifework and was super stingy. Some of the salmon slices were paper-thin.The rice was not great either- huge grains. There was crab, avocado and a TON of thinly sliced cucumber inside. After a few minutes of waiting and wondering whether or not they forgot about our other 2 rolls, they appeared. Next came the Hot Mama and the Rainbow Roll, which were very nicely presented on a big plate. These looked like they were made more carefully. They were served with the wasabi, pickled ginger, and an additional sauce which was honey mustard mixed with wasabi. This actually was interesting and a bit refreshing. The hot mama Roll had spicy tuna (I think) inside and also had alot of cucumber. It wasn't as rice heavy as the Orange blossom. It came served with a very spicy sauce on the side, which was a bit too hot for me but my hubby enjoyed it. The rainbow rolls was actually refreshing and since this had a nice mixture of fish that wasn't sliced in a stingy fashion, it was good. This was my favorite of all 3 rolls. The pieces of fish were kind of blocky rather than smoothly formed into the roll but at least it was generous in portion! It was a nice night out and over all we did save some money but I probably prefer Asahi on Lexington rd to this place. It's a bit more expensive but basically you get what you pay for.

You cannot miss this Sushi Restaurant! The artistry of the food, fast and great service, and the sushi chef and the behind the kitchen chef (who makes the udon, yakisoba, bibimbab, etc) just fantastic! I don't believe bad reviews at this joint!!! It's just that good! Oh did I mention the service!!! I always get some kind of free dish! Sometimes an extra roll or side salad!!! Don't have to think twice! Just try them out! Suggestions: pink lady, Xfile, girlfriend!!! OH and the Dragon Balls! It's just a party in my mouth! The fusion of the crisp outside, the soft melting touch of cream cheese and the crabmeat... You have to try it!!!!

By far the best sushi place on bardstown. They are all so friendly, we come back once a week to have as much sushi as we can stuff ourselves with.

Louisville has decent sushi but this was just mediocre. A lunch stop and three rolls later did not impress me. Alaska (yellowtail, cucumber, avocado and scallion), crunch (crab with mayo and cucumber) and spicy tuna (tuna and cucumber) were all blah... It is also frustrating when you visit a restaurant for the first time and the wait staff does not suggest a lunch menu which is hidden in the main menu. Instead they show you the main menu...not good customer service.

This place has quickly become my favorite Sushi place in Louisville. The food is fabulous, the staff is super friendly, and there's always plenty of room (this is important for World Cup fans like me at times like these...) You can see Louisville To Do's blog post about it here: goo.gl/kTeJGp

All the fish was very fresh, the chef or manager had a lot of personality and brought some free delicious rolls to the table, the atmosphere was pleasant, the prices are very reasonable, the portions were huge. Service was good but not great.

My daughter and I went yesterday, a Thursday evening, to use a Groupon I had that was soon to expire. We split the house garden salad (usual ginger salad) and we got the yum yum roll, creamy california roll, popcorn lobster roll and treasure island roll. I was in sushi heaven with these rolls. I've tried sushi all over Louisville and southern Indiana. Oishii Sushi is still my very fav, but this place now comes in second. The rolls are soft and taste very fresh. The crab has a wonderful taste and the cream cheese seemed soft and...well, creamy! It was delish!

Groupon just had a deal for Wasabiya. So be prepared for service in the next month or so to be particularly busy even on non-peak days. I came with a friend last night (fairly early on a Thursday), with my Groupon. Service was sluggish...I think there were 2 waitresses and the two guys making the sushi, but by the time we had our appetizer and ordered our rolls, the whole restaurant was full! And the sushi is good enough that I am not put off by a little wait! Get the Groupon, don't get the Groupon....just GO here! I highly recommend the yami avocado appetizer (tempura fried avocado with crab and special sauce). And my two favorite rolls here are the Cardinal Roll and, as of last night, the Snow White Roll. Yum! I wish I could afford to eat sushi everyday!

I've been to Wasabiya twice. The first one was by mistake when I got too excited with the Groupon that I got and did not bother reading the fine print. It cannot be used on that day yet. Bummer, but what else can we do when we've already ordered and consumed everything? 1st time- Tried their sushi. They were nowhere near being delicious. :( They didn't taste fresh and the variety of Japanese rice used is not a good kind. We were disappointed and I tried making myself feel better by getting some yummy dessert. I tried ordering tempura ice cream, but I was told that it wasn't available that time. I know I'm not just being bitter because I didn't get to use my Groupon, I found that out after we ate. 2nd time- This is the redeeming visit, which made me decide to give them 3 stars instead of 2. We got to use our Groupon (Yay!), but decided not to gamble on their sushi. We got the gyoza for our appetizer. Those were delicious!!! Flavor was really good, they were slightly fried on one side, and the sauce made them even more tasty. For the entree, I got the Korean BBQ rib and my husband got the chicken. Both dishes were really good. Portions were huge so I did not attempt getting any dessert. Though their gyoza and entrees were really good, we won't go all the way to Bardstown Rd just for those... we would most likely not come back.

When I first learned that a Japanese restaurant would be opening closer to me, I was excited. And, for the first few months, the food was great. Then, my favorite chef left and the rolls started getting a bit sloppy, and the special tuna tartar lost that special zing it had to it. I still enjoy dining here, if the temperature outside is not too hot (which makes it uncomfortable inside), and there isn't some sort of sewage smell inside. I stay away from the sushi, nigiri and sashimi, as I'm still not sure if those food offering have improved again, but I will fill up on some agedashi, spare ribs, salad, rice and tempura. They've got a decent sake selection, and sometimes have some yummy plum wine or fruit-infused sake's. In summary...not at the top of my go-to Japanese locales, but if I want to walk up somewhere close for a little edamame and a cold Sho Chiku Bai Nigori unfiltered sake, it's a sound choice.

I bought a restaurant.com gift certificate for this place a couple of weeks after moving to Louisville in August 2010, but heard not so great things about it and didn't try it until tonight. For that, I feel like an idiot. My friend and I both started with a side salad with their ginger-carrot dressing, which my friend declared his favorite (Side note: we go out for sushi on a weekly basis, going to all different places around the city, depending on where we are). We got three rolls to share: a spicy tuna with tempura flakes, treasure island, and dragon balls (not really a 'roll,' but individually fried balls). They came out in that order, which was nice; it felt almost coursed. The spicy tuna roll tasted very fresh (..in Kentucky) and had great flavors. The treasure island roll was a pile of amazing and I wish I had another one right now. I forget what exactly was in it but it made sweet, magical love to my tastebuds. Last but not least, the dragon balls... so unique. Deep fried spicy crab and cream cheese with hot sauce & eel sauce. Slightly difficult to eat (but if you stab with chop sticks and then split are manageable) but worth it. For dessert, we split tempura ice cream. This is probably why I didn't give it 5 stars... it tasted freezer burnt. That part was a bummer. Next time, I'll go for the awesomeness and walk across the street to Pie Kitchen for ice cream.

Wonderful place! Very well priced for sushi with great service. I come here at least once a week and it's always an enjoyable experience!

I actually didn't end up getting sushi. This was my second visit to Wasabiya, my first was when they first opened. I tried a more traditional dish--Bibim Bop--where there was rice, vegetables in egg presented in a hot pan. It was really enjoyable, and just what I needed the night before a ten mile race. There was some confusion involving which bill was ours', and getting it paid quickly. I do give them credit though, there were a lot of folks there that night and many of the folks (including us) there with a groupon. My husband ordered two sushis rolls, the one he thought came off fairly sweet for the flavor, but the other he really enjoyed. Overall, the waitress was very helpful with suggestions and in explaining how to eat what I ordered.

Try the pink lady or the hot JB rolls...so delicious! The staff is super friendly and my family and I love going there for some yummy sushi! The interior is clean and modern without too much kitchy asian themed decor. A great place to stop in if you are out in the Highlands!

Update: Came on a Friday night, great service and staff again... This place is growing on me. New Bibimbap is excellent. ----------------------- Went on a Tuesday night during the week and the place was pretty empty. Service was good, sushi was fresh and it was quick. Good size rolls and fair prices. If you like Sapporo you'll like this place too, (without all the noise). What I ordered: Japanese bagel, Hot mama, Cherry blossom, Eatin lemon

This place is surprisingly pretty good given that I'm used to New York restaurants. The restaurant is super spacious and clean and the decor is rather modern. My absolute favorites on the menu are the simple salmon sushi and the WHITE tuna. Yup, you heard that right - white tuna. It's absolutely amazing and melts in your mouth. Try it the next time you go! Tip: there's convenient parking right behind the restaurant.

4.5 stars, rounded up. Definitely feeling the love for this neighborhood sushi spot. My husband and I haven't had a chance to try out too many sushi places in Louisville, but we have been to what feels like dozens while living in other cities mainly Chicago, Denver, and Boulder CO. We decided to go on a whim on our way home from a basketball game at the Yum Center - the fact that there was a free parking spot literally right out front of the door sealed the deal. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Saturday night. There were a handful of other parties in the restaurant, the ambiance was inviting - attractive paint colors on exposed brick walls, dim lighting with nice accents, a couple flat screens showing college basketball (no sound). What stood out immediately was the friendliness of the host and waitstaff - we eat out quite a bit, and it's rare that a balance of friendly yet not annoying is accomplished as well as it was here. Restrooms were also very clean / looked after. On to the food - we started edamame and miso soup - both basics, as good as expected. We opted to get only three rolls, where we usually would split four. Three was a good call. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that the "basic rolls" (priced around $5 or less, and not really all that basic as far as the combinations) we had ordered each came with eight pieces, the same number as the one specialty roll we got. Plenty of yummy sushi arrived quickly. We enjoyed all the rolls, and aside from the sweet potato tempura, I can't recall the exact names of the other rolls. One had mango, shrimp tempura, cucumber...very tasty. The selection was sizable and comprehensive - something for everyone. Lots of selections without raw fish, for pregnant ladies or others who have particular aversions. Highly recommend, this is a great place on a fun block in the Highlands.

Came alone for a quick lunch. Service was kind of awkward, like they didn't know what to do with me. I would have been happy to sit at the sushi bar... Had the lunch special which was $10 for a decent salad, fresh fried rice, and a terrible roll. I don't remember what it was called but it was 90% fake crab covered in spicy sauce and maybe some mayo or something. Ick. All the rolls on the lunch menu consist of super cheap ingredients like cucumber and avocado. No real fish whatsoever, that I can recall. In this neighborhood, there are so many cute bars and restaurants. I wish I'd tried something else.

I love going around Louisville and trying new foods, as well as restaurants, so when I saw the Groupon for Wasabiya it was an absolute no brainer. Unsure about our first visit, I have actually been to Wasabiya about three times before deciding that I just simply dislike this sushi restaurant. With that said, they have some interesting menu items, but based on my experiences, I wouldn't recommend this sushi restaurant. ____________________________________________ The first time, I was very unimpressed. My boyfriend and I ended up getting the Sugar Hot Mama, Yummy YumYum, & Sunday Morning. The Yummy YumYum roll and Sunday Morning rolls were "OK," but the Sugar Hot Mama roll was just absolutely awful. I am pretty accustomed to purchasing this roll which is popular in Louisville, featuring jalapenos, cream cheese, and shrimp (and named after the area that restaurant is in - Highlander roll at Wild Ginger located in the Highlands, Frankfort roll at Osaka Sushi Restaurant located on Frankfort Ave.). Unfortunately, their version of this particular roll was just terrible. The jalapenos were pickled (and tasted like they came straight from a jar), the cream cheese was spare, and the roll FELL APART. As a redeeming factor, the restaurant had slightly better than average green tea that came in one of the loveliest canisters that I've seen, but overall - bad food, bad service, and we left very unsatisfied. The second time, I came for lunch and it wasn't too bad. Between my mother and me we had their miso soup, traditional Japanese salad, salmon sashimi, Double Dragon roll, and Japanese Bagel roll. This meal was actually pretty decent. The miso soup and salad were pretty typical and up to par. The salmon sashimi was alright, but nothing special, while the two rolls were quite delicious. Out of the two rolls, I'd definitely recommend the Double Dragon roll which was enticing and delish. Now this last time we visited was this past week and it was definitely the deciding factor in why I decided to give Wasabiya a 2/5 instead of 3/5. This time, my boyfriend and I decided to get the Hot JB roll and Cardinal Roll. In terms of taste, both of these rolls were pretty decent, and the meal would've been delicious, BUT the rolls fell completely apart on us. Not only that, but the service was pretty much nonexistent and the sushi chefs didn't even bother to talk to us. This wasn't the first time we experienced the bad service either and this time it just really got to us since our sushi rolls fell completely apart on us. Conclusion? Not a terrible sushi restaurant, but the quality is serious lacking. Some work and this place could possibly turn into a 4/5 star restaurant, but it's far beyond reaching 5/5 stars.

Came here on Saturday evening, and enjoyed it! The interior is spacious and cool (temperature), with dark wood furniture. The service was really friendly. Because of personal conviction (over-fishing, mercury and contaminants), I usually only indulge in one or two fish rolls, and get the rest veggie. Fortunately, Wasabiya has an excellent selection of vegetarian sushi! We shared: Edamame (no complaints) White Dragon (yellowtail was a little fishy; not spicy at all) Hot Mama (my favorite - nice and spicy!) Sweet potato tempura (no complaints) Lotus roll (the mango on the top was a great touch) Buddha's Belly (healthy and crunchy - loved the radish in there) The rolls were 8-piece rolls, and none were too big to fit in my mouth (take note, Oishii!). The above turned out to be MORE than enough food for the two of us, and we ended up taking a few pieces home. Their menu is quite expansive - there is something for everyone! I like that they have more traditional (no cream cheese) rolls in addition to more American sushi favorites. They have a whole section for deep-fried rolls, which I thought was interesting (and maybe defeats the purpose of a healthy choice?). They have a nice wine, beer, and sake list, as well as specials during the week. Even without specials, the prices were very reasonable! I'll definitely be back for my sushi fix!

If sushi is your cup of tea, this would be the place for you. We started out with the fried sweet potatoes, which were not cooked the best, and a fried shrimp/cream cheese item, which was absolutely the b. My daughter was not too adventurous, so she tried the teriyaki chicken and fried rice, simple but good. I on the other hand tried the Kentucky Derby rolls. Heat up in the oven with some soy sauce, I was as good as gold, but the eating the rolls cold was not my cup of tea. I did learn eating the garnish, which was beautiful, is not always a good idea. The pink garnish tasted like some kind of cleaning sup

Step off Baxter Avenue into a place that could easily be in Boston or another big city. The atmosphere is very hip, the staff are very friendly and the food quality is fresh and flavorful. I like the option of having baked and partially fried rolls to chose. One roll like the 'double dragon' has 8 pieces and is easily enough for dinner when added with a salad. Two of us ate for $45 excluding tip and we had two salads, two large rolls, and two Japanese beers. I ate here on a Thursday night and already on Sunday I am planning to return tonite.

We gave wasabiya another shot as I had purchased a groupon deal. It was really good this time!! The rolls were huge, so we actually had too much sushi.... Everything was arranged in an appealing way, tasted fresh and great.

If you are looking for a good sushi place in the bardstown road area, this is the place to go. I liked the atmosphere, but worried when we walked in on a Saturday night and there were only 3 other parties. Miso soup and house salad were good not great. Chicken entree was good, fried rice also very good. Now on to the sushi! We have tried almost every place in town and like the choices here a lot. Some we have not seen before so it was hard to choose. Out of 3 rolls we liked all 3, but had different favorites. I enjoyed the deep fried roll with jalapeno, she liked the crunch munch and volcano. Almost forgot the GREAT service, he was an excellent server and we are hard to impress. Yes it was not busy but I have a feeling it wouldn't have mattered. We left completely stuffed and satisfied. It is reasonably priced compared to some other places in town. Some places try to make special rolls $15+ most here were closer to $10 from what I saw. A similar meal at another place after tip would have been around $75 here it was right at $60. I was pleased and will be back, good to know we can get good sushi on Bardstown road before we go out for the night. Two suggestion, need a website with a menu, and advertise some sushi specials so we can try different rolls. They did have some specials but only certain nights and it was posted at the restaurant, put it on a website. *****UPDATE***** After buying a few Groupons and going back, I found out I was wrong about this place. My second experience will be my last as it was ok at best and did not sit well with my stomach. Maybe not so fresh ingredients as others have said, but in any case I will not be going back. To top it off we had a hair in the salad, we should have left then.I have a unused Groupon I have no intention of ever using.

Sushi was great, loved 'sunday morning'! the only reason i gave four stars and not five is that we waited 40min to get the sushi. the hostess did give us free salads and free beers so that was very awesome and not commonly found in most places. def be back!!

I went here for dinner before by bachelor party. Maybe not a good idea, but now I know that nori paper and rice are very resilient to stomach acid. Yeah, so I always see this place is empty so my friend and I decided to try it. The staff was very friendly and the sushi was very good, My friend got some sort of teriyaki steak, which was sort of eh, but I told him not to get it. That sort of stuff is usually kind of boring no matter where you get it. It didn't really do anything to set itself apart from any of the other million sushi places around the highlands, but it certainly was far from bad. I saw they had a Groupon $15 for $30, so I will be going again in the near future. As far as it being empty most of the time, I think that location has a curse on it. Actually, I think this place has lasted longer than anything occupying that space in recent memory.

I've been here twice recently and enjoyed it both times. The miso soup is especially good - not too much seaweed. I also loved the vegetable tempura roll and the vegetable fried rice.

This place has really gone downhill. I really hate to give them a bad review because the staff is always so nice, and they are always so generous about sending free stuff our way, but it just isn't what it used to be. Many of the rolls seem to have been reformulated to have lesser quality--and less expensive ingredients. Seriously, when will sushi places understand that you cucumber is not as good at avocado? On a side note, I stopped going to Sapporo for this exact same reason. I looked over the menu and everything was "spicy (imitation) crab" and cucumber. no thanks. On my most recent visit, I was glad to see that they had brought back more interesting options and the quality was really good. So after my last visit to Wasabiya, I probably won't be back unless they make some changes to their menu. I really love the staff though, so I hope they can hang in there and get their quality and creativity back to where they started.

Amazing, delicious, fresh, fresh, fresh sushi. The presentation is 5 star, top chef quality. The ambience is casual trendy fresh.. The meal is elegant. The service is fast and friendly without being over attentive. Drinks filled promptly. Excellent knowledge of the menu items. A great place for an intimate date or a big group of friends. We used our Groupon. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Two thumbs up!

Wasabiya is great! It's my second favorite Japanese restaurant. I always get the red snapper which is perfect. It has the slightest crisp on the outside and is perfectly flaky on the inside. TRY IT!! And their sushi is great too. The staff is really warm and friendly too. We like to go here when we want Japanese without all the fuss and wait of the other one.

    (5)
  • Andy C.

I really wanted to give this place a better rating because of the service and pleasant staff... but in the end it is about the food. And I find myself being generous with 3 stars. I want sushi to be one of two things- either a pure taste of high grade fish by itself or a creative roll that explodes with tastes in my mouth. The sashimi I ordered was great, but the rolls were just flat out bland. A previous reviewer said that it "didn't have any zing"... And I completely agree. A missed opportunity for a great staff of people in a great location. Sadly.

  • Colette H.

I tried Wasabiya again because my friend offered me dinner there due to a soon to expire Groupon. Still pretty underwhelming, rolls are priced pretty consistently with other sushi bars but continue to be overloaded with cheaper ingredients like cucumber. I don't actually mind cutting back on the fish for whatever reason but please don't compromise the balance of flavor!
