Yum. You can't go wrong with fish & chips and The Irish Rover does that really well. I also love their Guinness beef stew in a bread bowl. It is seriously amazing! I also love the scotch eggs. So here's the deal: You can sit at the bar and order pub food and watch soccer games on the t.v. while enjoying a nice Guinness or a black and tan. Or, you can sit at a table and have dinner with your family and have a great conversation over good food and drink. They also have local beers on tap! Buy local Y'all!! Other members in our party had bangers and mash, Shanagarry fish cakes, and the cottage pie. All were very good.

I love the Irish Rover! I'm guilty of ordering the same thing pretty much every time I go. I say why change a good thing? My order usually includes a Scotch egg, fish & chips and a Guinness. It's so so good! Best fish & chips in town in my opinion. The scotch egg is a must try. It's like breakfast in a ball, but it's wonderful any time of day. Be sure to add plenty of the spicy Coleman's mustard! Now that will clear the sinuses. Their cottage pie is definitely a comfort dish. I've had it once and enjoyed it. I've also had their benedictine (I don't know if they serve this all the time) which was super yummy. Although it's not an Irish dish, it is a Louisville dish and they do it right! The Irish Rover has a nice selection of Irish whiskeys as well as whiskeys from other areas. My favorite is Redbreast. Some of the other Irish beers available on tap are Smithwick's, Harp, and the Irish Rover's very own Irish Rover Red. The restaurant has that warm Irish pub feel with the beautiful wooden bar & a fireplace in the dining room.

Nestled in the heart of Clifton sits a little slice of heaven. This is hands down in my favorite 5 places to spend an evening out to eat. I can't tell you that I have never gotten bad service, there is a guy waiter who is deplorable. I can't tell you I've never ordered a bad dish because I have (Dublin Smokies). What I can tell you is that it has that CHEERS kinda feel. Plus, 99% of the time both the service and the food are amazing. I have tried a few things here and I am going to get very exact and technical. Dublin Smokies - I wasn't sure what i was eating but it tasted canned for sure. It by far isn't their best dish. In fact, it'd be no ones best dish ever. Not even Rallys. On a side note, the dish says it has shrimp as a part of it. In reality a few shrimp lay underneath the otherwise disgusting concoction and lend no flavor nor serve a purpose in it. Bangers & Mash - The bangers are a good flavored sausage. It is what it sounds like. i enjoyed it, but it isn't fancy. Guinness Beef Stew - DAMN THAT IS SOME GOOD STEW!!! Um, as you might guess, i enjoyed it a ton. Cottage Pie - OMG, their Guinness Beef Stew in a bread bowl topped with Champ and Cheese!!! This is wicked good but really you might get more stew if you order it alone and maybe order like a side of Champ if you were so inclined. I would be. Chicken Cashel Blue - This was shockingly amazing. the portion size alone made this fat man happy. The dish itself has flavor galore. It is a must try and then it's a must try again and again to be sure. Champ - I'd come just for the champ. Bubble & Squeak - Holy Hell, it's fried Champ!!! LOVE IT! Scotch Eggs - They make an excellent Scotch Egg. I love the flavor. Trouble is, I'm not sure it compliments their other dishes. It's like having something out of place. Maybe if I just had Scotch Eggs I wouldn't feel this way though. Salmon Potato Puffs - These were oddly enough Bland. I am starting to think Salmon related items aren't what they do best in general. Cordon Bleu Fritters - These are a must try. Tasty and Delicious!!! *Make sure you ask for some hot mustard at your table. *They serve baskets of different kinds of bread to your table. About the only way I can see going wrong here is if you yourself are a boring person who gets a basic hamburger and chips with a simple ale. You can't know how amazing the food might be if you aren't the type of person to try it. But really, that goes for most anywhere. The atmosphere isn't really Irish per say. In fact it's more down home country. But still, it has a warm vibe that certainly will keep me coming back.

I guess I just don't get it. I find the Irish Rover to be a very average place. I feel like the only reason that it is as popular as it is, is because it has "Irish" in the name, and Americans have an infatuation with Ireland. I believe that if you called this place by some other name and not put Irish in the title, it wouldn't be nearly as liked. (Gotta love the people that say, "I'm Irish!" But what they really mean is, they have a great, great, great, great, great, great, grandmother that may or may not have been from Ireland. And despite having far more lineage that traces back to other European countries, the person has decided to claim that they're Irish instead of German or English or *gasp* just plain ol' American.) *stepping off soap box* But honestly, the Irish Rover is fine. It's a fine place to eat and have a drink. It does have a cozy atmosphere and fun decor; it is in a really good area of town. And, the prices are more than reasonable. I find the food to be very average. I've eaten here a thousand times, and nothing has ever made me go, "Wow! This is great!" Am I a hater? I might be. I try to be fair, though. And in my opinion, there are scores of better places on Frankfort Avenue and throughout the rest of the city.

We've been eating and drinking at The Irish Rover since first opened up on Frankfort Ave. It has even become part of our holiday traditions to go for Dinner on Christmas Eve. Having said that, we enjoyed an early dinner at the Rover last night. Parked in lot and were shown straight to a table in the almost empty dining room around 5:30 pm. Place was starting to fill in by the time we left. Our server was attentive but hadn't checked the specials before he started service for the evening. We had to wait as he checked what the night's offerings were. This was somewhat annoying, but he seemed to be newly on the job so we rolled with it. We devoured the delicious bread basket that is served before the meal but saved room for the main event. A huge plate of fish & chips for me and a pub burger and chips for my friend. I dug into two, large filets of white fish sprinkled with malt vinegar and the fantastic, dill-flavored sauce that comes on the side. If my lunch hadn't been so skimpy, I'd never had been able to finish off this gargantuan portion. The batter was very crispy and not greasy at all. The thick cut chips (fries) were good, but could have been a little hotter. My friend reported that her burger was cooked just as she asked (medium) and that the smoked gouda she had added was terrific. She had so many chips that she had to leave a few left on the plate. Stuffed like a goose, I had to get one of my favorite desserts to take home for later. The raspberry trifle is an amazing concoction of yellow cake layered with vanilla custard, raspberries, and whipped cream. Perfect for sharing! The Irish Rover is a terrific, casual place to enjoy a meal and a beer with friends or family. Kid-friendly and accessible, the only draw backs can be the noise level and sometimes lengthy wait. I've had most of the menu and I have enjoy each meal!

Of all the days we chose to go to the Irish Rover, it was St Patrick's Day weekend... & I'll be the first to say it -- I hate crowds. But the wait was surprisingly only 30 minutes, so, we stayed. The ambiance is what I would expect if I were to walk into a small pub in Dublin. I'm sure that's exactly what they were going for, so, they nailed it. Kudos! We shared an order of the scotch egg & garlic mushrooms. The scotch egg was delicious & crisp. The mushrooms were okay... Not all too garlicky like I'd hoped. But the side of Marie Rose sauce they were served with was delicious. I even dipped the scotch egg in the sauce. For our entrées, I ordered fish & chips, & my boyfriend ordered bangers & mash. The fish was so delicious, & the breading was just perfect. Nice & crisp. The sausage in my boyfriends dinner was so perfect, he didn't even need a knife to cut it. & the mashed potatoes tasted like a little bit of clouds from heaven. Service was OK. I was really more impressed with the hostess, who I also assume is the owner of the establishment. We'll definitely return.

I have visited The Irish Rover numerous times and have never left hungry. The atmosphere is typical of a pub, and feels small and personal. I have had varied experiences with service staff, however, but the most recent trip I made here was A+! My dinner club chose to have our March dinner at The Irish Rover and we were not disappointed. We had about 17 people show up for dinner. We had reservations and they sat us at 2 different round tops side by side. Our tables were ready when we arrived and our server, Sam, did a fantastic job of keeping up with our staggered orders and being patient with us throughout the evening. He was exactly what you want in a server! The Irish Rover is lucky to have him. We all ordered some drinks and also quite a bit of food. The food was ok. Everyone got what they ordered, no one's was messed up. :) My favorite item on the menu is probably the veggie sandwich. It is basically a hearty grilled cheese with diced, cooked veggies on it. Yum! You also have to try the Coleman's mustard on it. Oh, and don't forget the delicious soda bread that they bring to the table too! That is not a bread you see often at all at restaurants and it is worth having a couple slices of before dinner. I am glad we picked the Irish Rover to celebrate St Patrick's Day!

Always enjoy coming here. The food is good from start to finish. The bread you get before the meal is excellent and always enjoy loading on carbs here. Really enjoy the Welsh rabbit and the cottage pie.

One of my all time favorites, always. Excellent beer and food choices. We ALWAYS start with the Benedictine. Other places have it, but the Rover's is the best. It's served with toasted, buttered sourdough bread. They always have sourdough & wheat bread before the meal. Try a Scotch Egg-fried hardboiled egg wrapped in sausage. I know "heart attack", I always have a 1/4. It's big enough to share. Tonight we had pork tenderloin stirfry-lots of veggies, delicious sauce; shrimp & grits-good size for 1 person, had no sausage; & salmon with cole slaw (shredded very fine) & the champ (yummy mashed potatoes). The fish & chips are always delicious, as is the Irish stew. Service is always good. Servers know about the food & drinks. If anyone ever suggests going, jump in the car.

Just came here tonight for my birthday! I've wanted to go for a while, but its a bit out of the way, so never got a chance to go before now. First of all, good luck getting parking. The restaurant wasnt even full, yet there was maybe one parking spot open. That's the worst thing I can say about the place though. Our waitress was super friendly. I heard her giving suggestions to other customers who didnt know what they wanted, and kept coming to check on us to see if we were ready, but we didnt feel rushed, like some people make you feel. For apps we got the garlic mushrooms, and the cheese and chive puffs. The mushrooms werent as garlic-y as they could have been, but they were still good. It was a very large portion of them for only 3.95. The cheese puffs were amazing. I could eat them everyday and still want more. For my entree I got the fish and chips. I figured it was my first time here, might as well. The fish was huge, and super fresh. The chips were okay. They arent seasoned or anything, so I made use of the vinegar. My mom got the fish cakes with veggies and mash. I tried a bite and it was absolutely delicious. The prices are very good as well. Will definitely be back!

Wonderfully classic Irish pub with a friendly owner and staff! An intimate, south-facing patio is fantastic on a beautiful day. The inside is finely crafted to traditional Irish pub design, making for a great escape from any day. The food? You'll love it! Recently we ordered the Cottage Pie, a delicious incarnation guaranteed to satisfy anyone. Compiled of a tasty bread bowl, filled with home-made beef stew, then topped with a tower of mashed potatoes and cheese. Are you kidding me? Requires a pint afterwards... Also highly recommend the fish & chips. An entirely large portion of Icelandic cod battered to perfection and served with Irish chips (e.g, tasty thick-cut fries). Going in for the Lamb Stuffed Cabbage next time. Ahhh, something to live for. Thank you Irish Rover...

Lamb Stuffed Cabbage...absolutely delicious. Scotch eggs, must try. Cordon Bleu Fritters are great too.... Everyone had a great time, a great meal, and left satisfied and happy! Thank goodness for Guiness!

Pretty good place. mussels for appetizer. Loved it! Bangers for entree, it's alright. My friend had cottage pie I think it's ok. But he thought it was awesome. Price is reasonable.

This a great place along Frankfort Ave. I always get the fish and chips, and it's good and everything, just nothing out of this world. Fun place to have dinner or some Guinness with friends.

Love this place, 3rd time here and I never disappoints, wife had the Lamb stuffed cabbages, with scotch egg. Which both was very tasty, I myself had fish and chips with crab cakes for starter, The crab cakes melt in your mouth and the fish was very tender with a golden crust, do not forget the Guinness ...great place.

Love it here! First experience was iffy, only because I ordered smoked salmon and thought i was ordering cooked salmon. Second trip was great, excellent service, authentic Irish server, great foods and explanation of menu items

I will admit right off the bat that my 3 stars are mostly based on my entree, which was most likely just a poor choice on my part. "A-OK" definitely sums up my meal, but there were friends of mine that had really great food in front of them. First things first: the service was outstanding. Sam was our waiter, and he was funny and very personable. Many of us had questions about the menu, and he was very helpful in his explanations. There were also 10 of us in our party, but he handled us like a pro. Thanks, Sam! I ordered the smoked salmon and potato gratin. The menu describes it as "a casserole of potatoes, cream, smoked salmon, swiss and parmesan served with the vegetable of the day." The vegetable of the day was a mostly cabbage vegetable medley. I like cabbage, so there were no complaints in this department. Although the menu does not incorrectly describe the entree, I was not a big fan. I imagined there would be large chunks of salmon, but instead there were small pink specks, which I assumed was the salmon. A friend ordered the same and did not think it had salmon at all (it did...it was just very lacking). I ordered the bread and butter pudding for dessert, and it was huge and delicious. I didn't even eat half of it, boxed it up, but sadly left it on the table. I hope you were able to enjoy it, Sam! The next day I was quite bummed about not having the bread pudding to snack on. I tried a few items that friends ordered which were delicious: raspberry trifle, smoked salmon pate, and the blue cheesecake ("blue cheese, herbs, and cream cheese in a walnut crust, served with brown soda bread...and a pear vinaigrette." I would definitely order the blue cheesecake the next time I go. Sam kept us well stocked on bread throughout the evening, and I probably had a loaf all to myself. I look forward to trying The Irish Rover again and being able to give it more stars. I will be more careful in my dinner choice next time.

The Scotch eggs were a BIG win. These are hardboiled eggs surrounded by sausage and deep fried. They are very tasty and filling! I went on a Saturday night and the atmosphere was family style and boisterous. I ordered the Salmon Potato Gratin for my main dish. The salmon is finely chopped into the potato gratin. The dish was a bit overly creamy after halfway through. The vegetables on the plate were cabbage and cooked carrots. I did not care for them.

The food is good. The experience was awful! It was crowded and the owner came to our table and loudly ridiculed my friend for not liking her food. She sent back a soup and a salad. He was so angry and loud that we were humiliated. She asked to speak privately but he told her not to come back and said , " I know how you are, you do this all over town... Getting everything for free" she only had one bite of each item. It was a surreal experience. I have always enjoyed going there but this will definitely keep me away!!

I can't really think of a more cozy place to eat at on a cold winter's night. The food is 100 percent comfort -- the type that makes you want to curl up in a bunch of blankets and take a long nap. And when the food doesn't warm you up, the beer or whiskey will. I usually get the smoked salmon and potato gratin, which is creamy and just-right salty. It comes with steamed veggies, which balances out the salt and is similarly simple. All of the dishes at The Irish Rover are not over-thought, not fancy -- just delicious. And the service has always been stellar. Bill, our server on our recent visit, was attentive and great to talk to. Unfortunately I don't go to The Irish Rover as much as I should, but more cold nights mean more comfort meals.

The only TRUE Irish Pub in all of Louisville. They have a unbelievable Irish Whiskey and Scotch selection. Nobody can match it. The food is awesome. My favs are the Lamb Stuff Cabbage, Salmon, Gratin Potatoes and Irish Meatloaf (seasonal). They also do good burgers and a fish and chips. Best scotch eggs in town. The owners (the Reidy's) and bar staff actually understand what they are serving you. You are more than income to them. Jason is the best local bar manager in town. Add the bar staff of Mike, Charles and Walter, most bars can't compete.

This place doesn't mess around with their fish and chips. The piece of fish I got was enormous and it was done to perfection. Great selection of Irish beers to boot. Definitely as close to Ireland as you're going to get in Louisville.

I've enjoyed great service for years, today the service at best was and is rude. Professional was not even on the radar. This is not the quality Irish Rover has demanded. I'm embarrassed the recommendations I made to our friends.

It's just good y'all. Great beer selection, friendly staff, delicious food. The Smoked Salmon Pate tastes like lox and cream cheese (which I'm totes into as a flavor combo), Cordon Bleu Fritters are amazing and will clear out your allergy plagued sinuses if you dip them in the Coleman's Mustard. Scotch Eggs, HELLO! Heart disease never tasted sooooo good! Seriously though, they are magically delicious. Then there's the sandwiches and traditional pub food. All of which is good grub. Ginormous grilled cheese sandwich, bangers and mash, fish and chips, cottage pie. All good, all of it. I've never had a bad experience here.

My sister was belittled last night by the owner here. She ordered a whisky with a splash of water but was brought water & whisky on the rocks. When the issue was brought up the owner brought the glass back saying she had done this 22 years that my sister wad wrong and so forth. This was our first time there and it was shocking. If a person does not order on the rocks and asked that the drink not be, especially whisky it seems a simple fix. I have looked on line and asked whisky drinkers and all agree about it typically being water or ice. I had heard good things and wanted to try the food but we left after paying for drinks. All other staff were polite and the food smelled great but I cannot support an owner acting so out of line with a customer for a simple issue.

One day last week was my first long awaited trip to The Irish Rover. Before I was even done with my meal I could not wait to come back! I can barely write this review without my mouth watering! When we sat down we were given sour dough bread and Irish soda bread, which is made at the Blue Dog Bakery. For starters we got the salmon potato puffs which our waiter recommended. They are a delish combination of mashed potatoes, smoked salmon, onion and dill then fried and served with dill mayo. Yum! Since I ordered a light meal I also got a bowl of the leek and potato soup. The soup was good and I would order it again but it was no better than other restaurants I've been to. So many items on the menu sounded amazing but I was in the mood for mussels so mussels it was! These were some of the best mussels I have ever tried! The description says you get one pound of mussel which are steamed in Guinness, garlic and capers then finished with butter and served with toasted focaccia. I loved everything about these! (Except the focaccia, which may be good on its own but was too much for me once I dipped it into the juice. I preferred the simple bread they gave us when we sat down.) Needless to say I was beyond full after all the bread, puffs, soup and mussels! But I couldn't stop there. I needed to experience all the courses offered so to the dessert menu I went. Normally I would go for the flourless chocolate cake but I decided to get the raspberry trifle which is cake, berries, custard, and freshly whipped cream. After my first bite my stomach decided it wasn't full after all, a small miracle. This light, fruity, creamy desert was the perfect end to an amazing meal. The Irish Rover will now be added into rotation with my other favorite restaurants I like to frequent!

Irish Rover is a cozy little spot on Frankfort Avenue. I came here with a group of six on a Saturday night. I loved the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. They have a wonderful beer selection and serve tasty comfort food. I ordered the Chicken Cashel Blue, which was pretty good, but I wouldn't pick it again. I tasted the Cottage Pie, which was absolutely delicious. I couldn't resist sneaking my fork in for a few bites. I will definitely be ordering it next time.

I will always be in love with you Irish Rover, even if it's a long distance relationship. I used to live just down the road so back in the day, I was here quite a bit. It's where I got my first taste of Boddington's. Your fish and chips are the standard in which I hold all other fish and chips to. And, most importantly, where I had my first Scotch egg. It's true love. Many of nights, drinking at the bar and walking outside to see the snow falling down. Many days, hanging out on the patio with friends and family, eatin, drinkin' watching the day go by. It's the first place I head to eat when I'm back in the 'ville. Excellent pub, and obviously, highly recommend.

Reminds me of the pubs I visited when I was in the English countryside, the decor and atmosphere are very folksy and welcoming. The fish and chips are spot on according to my wife. I am a fan of the chicken cashel blue. The cordon bleu fritters are a great appetizer, and no one makes a Scotch egg like these folks....very good. Lot of good traditional pub grub to choose from on their menu. I Don't eat out "a lot", but the Irish Rover is definitely a place I go back to as often as I can.

Yuck Went there today for lunch. Got the blackened salmon salad. The salmon was so foul we spit it out. The fish had clearly went bad. We asked for a piece of fried fish instead which they brought us but it was greasy on just thrown on a plate. No one ever apologized to us, no manager came to speak with us, the waitress never apologized she just looked completely indifferent to the situation. And I'm sorry I work in the restaurant industry - if you serve someone fish that's gone bad the least you do is say sorry

On a day off I took my boyfriend here for a date. Everyone would rave about this resturant. It's honestly not as good as it looks. I couldn't believe what I was eating. It was cold and tastless. But I'd definitely come back here just to try more of there food. The server was probably the problem there. Leaving our food until it got cold. Maybe your experience would be different if you went.

Went here after my boyfriend and I had read the good reviews about this charming Irish style bar/restaurant. We arrived around 2ish on a Monday afternoon and we got to pick our seat at one of the booths in the bar. We were two of maybe 5 guests in the whole restaurant until the World Cup game between Algeria and Germany came on. We imbibed a few drinks. Of course, my guy ordered an Evil Twin Cowboy and I ordered a Tito's dirty martini (never to early for a martini, right? :P) To eat, we shared the Potato Puffs, which were soft, fluffy and delicious - like a small piece of fried mashed potato heaven, and the Scotch Eggs, which were a bit too hard boiled and salty for my taste, but simple satisfaction for my beer loving boyfriend. After enjoying in conversation, a few more drinks, and the Cup match, we decided to order the Guinness Beef Stew which was delightfully hardy and comforting. We finished the fantastic meal with a round of Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey. All in all an enjoyable visit. We will definitely be back! We even received a pleasant adieu from the owner.

Wonderful atmosphere bright and cheery. Attentive and friendly service. The meal was just perfect. The freshly baked, hearty bread, was so scrumptious that we asked for seconds. The bubble and squeak, scotch eggs, fish and chips, bangers and mash and special roasted vegetable dish everything tasted just lovely, you just know when food is prepared by people who care.

The Irish Rover really is a sleeper hit in a city full of sexy new restaurants. I am not sure when this place opened, but I'm pretty sure my family has been going here for over 15 years. On a return visit, I was pleasantly surprised the place hasn't gone downhill with age, as so many places do. I love the cozy setting in an historic building. Grab a booth and settle in with one of the excellent, rotating beers on draft. The salmon entree is a good size and excellent. Salmon burger, crab cakes, fish & chips all good as well. The house salad is also surprisingly nice. The simple, good food, reasonable prices and homey setting make this a really good option for a family or group outing.

Amazing service! There was a coupon for a dipped Maker's glass when you checked in that wasn't really valid but my waitress found me one! She brought out the food with amazing timing, and it was good food! Fish and chips with an amazing crust; bread and butter pudding for the win; and, of course, a Jameson and ginger ale. Will definitely be back.

I guess I am just not a pub food fan:( While the atmosphere and beer was super the food was mediocre. The lamb burger had more beef than lamb and even though I ordered it medium it arrived well done. The cheddar cheese atop the burger tasted and looked like a slice of American cheese. The bun tasted like a defrosted hamburger bun and wasn't worth the carbs. My companion had the sausage roll which contained dry sausages grilled on a flat grill with three strands of cooked onion. The toasted french roll also tasted like it was defrosted and cooked in house. Sort of like those frozen rolls you buy at Kroger. Overall the meal was disappointing. We literally ate in 20 minutes leaving most of the meal on the plate. I have been to pubs where the food was scrumptious. This meal missed the mark for me!

This place was great. The menu has a ton of options to suit both vegetarians and carnivores. There are a lot of soup options for a cold winter like this. There is a lot of room in the building so I think it is one of the better places in Louisville to take a group for a good (relatively cheap) meal. My family of 8 went here and sat around a table with no problem. I had the cottage pie, a hearty bowl of beef stew in a bread bowl with mashed potatoes on top (which they call champ I believe). It was a good experience and I plan on going back.

You know the theme song to cheers "Where Everybody knows your name". This is the perfect description of The Irish Rover. They have an amazing contingency of locals and business professionals, but don't mind having a great meal and a few beers with lunch. If you come here for a few weeks consistently, they just bring you a beer as soon as you're seated and remember your order. While most people will just order the Fish & chips which is literally the best in Louisville bar none! I recommend the Smoked Salmon Pate as an appetizer or the mussels which are phenomenal. The bangers and mash, cottage pie, or Guinness beef stew are highly recommended as well and I've never had a bad meal here. I appreciate an Irish pub that doesn't market to the masses or try to become a commercialized chain. Just come and order a Fuller, gather round with some friends and enjoy a great meal!

Food was excellent, service was not. Showed up with a party of 6 at 4pm, with the place almost empty. When the waiter realized there was six of us she got the owner. The owner informed us that she would only seat us if we were too be gone by 6pm because she had reservations at that time. We were reminded SEVERAL times that we had to be gone by 6pm and the owner even put menus and dishes on another table waiting for us to leave. Needless to say, I won't be going back even if though the food was very good. The owner needs to learn that every paying customer is valuable.

Owners are complete jerks. I wouldn't eat here to support this family. They only care about themselves. How dare there be something wrong with your meal. They won't own up to it. They'll deny and jump around the subject. Customers are first in 99% of the time. Decent fish sandwich and Scottish egg. That's it. Peace!!

Great atmosphere and great food! My favorite time to go is when it is cold and they have a fire going. Only thing I've ever had and didn't like was the bangers and mash. The potatoes were delicious but the sausages weren't my cup of tea. Not their fault, just wasn't what I was expecting. I believe you can also have events here upstairs

I've been to this place 4 times in 3 months, so you can definitely say I like it. I think the ambiance and the service is better than the food though. The food is good, but could be great if they just seasoned more. Fish and chips are supposed to be salty. If someone orders low sodium, cool, but for me? Bring on the salt! There's salt and pepper on the table though, and I have taken advantage for nearly every meal. The portions are perfect for me, on the small side for dudes. If you don't know what to get and you feel like you can handle a deep fried meal, go for the fish and chips. The batter on the fish is awesome, and though there isn't a listed price, it cost the same as my husbands lamb burger. The servers there are wonderful. They're attentive and quick. The bartenders know about the beers they serve, and will help you find one you like. This is definitely where to go if you're hoping to catch a drink with a friend in a laid back atmosphere.

Haven't been to this restaurant in years. We sat in the bar area and the Irish music was fantastic. Perfect volume and Irish feeling. Food was fairly good and we particularly enjoyed the salmon puffs. Unfortunately though our service at the table was marginal. Marlene was our server and she struggled to take care of us. When asked about the presentation of a specific sandwich she had to open the menu to read it only to reply "it is what it says." Hardly helpful. Then we asked for a salad and soup to come out before our meal but she brought it all together with a weak apology. When asking for another glass of wine she came back twice to ask "which wine was that you wanted?" Clearly she needs to get familiar with the menu.

This is a very nice, inexpensive, place to have dinner. The menu is Irish, American style. Having been to Ireland eighteen times, I marvel at how dishes are presented here as Irish. That being said there are enough similarities. Food was good. Atmosphere was quiet before 7:30 on a Monday night and then it got a bit loud in the restaurant section. Interestingly enough the pub area was relatively quiet at that time, although it may have been too early. Was there from 6 - 8pm. If you're looking for something different, you will not be disappointed.

We love the Rover, great place to bring "Out of Towners" for a great Louisville restaurant experience. Seems like I get the fish and Chips every time, really like it. the bread is great too! Highly recommend the Irish Rover, the atmosphere can be a little crowded feeling, but very fun anyway.

Will never go back !!! First of all , we had to wait for a table which was cool, but we had no where to stand other than the middle of the bar area. so we spotted some chairs in a corner at the end of the bar and we sat down to look at the menu. Some guy that I found out later was the ownercame over and started moving chairs around and cussing under his breath about the chairs being there. He walked over to adjust some books on the shelf that I had just been looking at (and put back neatly on the shelf).. He gave us a dirty look and walked away. We ordered our beers and appetizer and that was where it went wrong. The chicken I ordered was listed on the menu as "rubbed in spices and then pan seared" and I got chicken breasts with a light breading and absolutely nooooo taste or flavor, my vegetables were all really cold, top of mashed potatoes were cold and our waitress never came back until she asked us if we wanted a box. We asked the guy clearing the dishes to speak to the manager .. We were told it would be about 5 minutes because he was eating ... After 10 minutes of paying our check , he never came over and never stopped talking to his friends at the bar. We told him as we walked by not to worry about coming to our table because it was clear he cares nothing about his customers .. He just said "yeah, have a good night"

Bleu cheese and bacon salad well made. Burger is hand pattied. Cabbage rolls stuffed with lamb were good but tasted like a glorified meat loaf. Come hungry and try the chicken dish, the server will know what you're talking about.

This is what other pubs should go to sleep at night hoping that they one day become. This is a pub. This is a pub with pub food, fresh beer, reasonable prices, and patrons looking to do the exact same thing you are: drink. Every place I've ever lived, I've hunted down that one magical pub where you can walk in and drink alone if circumstance requires. This is that pub in Louisville. Food? Do you like pub food? If yes, then you can go drink a Guinness and eat a scotch egg without pretense at the Irish Rover. This is the part where I beg people not to ruin this place. Please don't walk in here and try to order champagne for no good reason. Good reasons: you just got engaged, you just won a competition, you just won a fabulous prize, you are drunk and you are going to try to remove the cork with a samurai sword (please let me know before you attempt this, I want to watch), you are a 45+ year old woman that intends to mix the champagne with orange juice and it is before noon on the weekend. Even then, if you're going to the Rover for any of these reasons, you probably won't be ordering champagne (except for the samurai sword thing). Bad reasons: anything not listed above. You may think I've being overly paranoid. I'm not. I witnessed a man trying to order champagne at the Rover for no particular reason. The bartender was as confused as I was. I shed a single tear for humanity.

What a place for some great food! They have a great patio area to sit out and enjoy a beer when the weather is nice. Great waitstaff that is very knowledgeable of their menu and has always steered me in the right direction when I ask for a suggestion. The Fish and chips is AWESOME!

I respect what goes on at this establishment but it's just not my bag, man (ok, I'm channeling Mike Meyers for some reason). I prefer The IR for lunch for the record, less crowded and more focused service it seems.

While tasty year-round, this is one of my winter favorites in Louisville. It's got a cozy, comfortable ambience, fabulous location in the heart of Frankfort Avenue, and has a menu full of comfort food favorites. On a recent trip I ordered the cottage pie, which is their take on popular Shepherd's Pie. A hearty beef stew is served in a bread bowl with mashed potatoes on top. It's hard to beat. But the Welsh Rabbit grilled cheese sandwich is delightful, as is the salmon hash. Hard to go wrong here. Lots of delicious Irish beers on tap--Guiness is only the beginning. Add to that some delicious pub bites (bubbles & squeak/potato cakes are tasty) and you don't even need to be hungry for a full meal to have a fun time at Irish Rover.

I try to find excuses to go eat there as I could- even better with friends or family who come in town. This is a PUB- no arguments on that! Smoked Salmon Pate, wonderful to tease your tongue before lunch or dinner! Leek & potato soup, yum! Welsh Rabbit, yummy! Limerick Ham, divine! Guinness Beef Stew, enough to swoon over!

Food was basic and bland. I've been to this place several times since 2000 and this aspect has not changed. The service was great this last time although when we walked in it looked like they wanted to draw straws to see who wanted the horrible task of seating us. They definitely need to step their game up and get some flavor in the meals. The swordfish was cooked nicely but as I said just basic.

The Irish Rover is one of my favorite restaurants in town, so I'm surprised I never got around to writing a review before now. Great, traditional Irish pub fare. The fish and chips are excellent, the Guiness stew is phenomenal. The Scotch eggs are pretty much like asking for a heart attack, but that is what Scotch eggs are supposed to be like. Good beer, friendly staff, decent odds of finding a parking place in their lot or the adjacent municipal lot (that counts for something on Frankfort Ave). The Rover is really family friendly with little games that the kiddos can play at the tables and what have you. Occasionally, they run the risk of being a bit too family friendly - but that's why we have Molly Malone's.

been here more times than i can count, and the portions have been huge, but just returned from there and the portion size has been scaled down alot, so i asked for another basket of bread, was told there is a charge now, the reciept showed a charge of $0.45/each piece for it,but i guess i was lucky, they added 2 extra pieces to the basket...... was also told bread would only be served after an entree was ordered would i return? honestly i can not say

We had an after-work crowd of 6 and grabbed one of the big tables in the main dining room, getting there early at 5pm. I was immediately struck by the wall of windows at the end of the room; as others have said, great venue for almost any crowd. The food was delicious. I had been craving the Guinness Beef Stew since checking the menu out online earlier in the day - it did not disappoint! There was plenty of Smoked Salmon Pate to go around, even enough to use the second plate of bread that we needed. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The service was very fast (likely because there were only 2 or 3 other occupied tables when we first got there - although it was almost packed by 6:30). Our waitress was very friendly, too. She informed us of a Guinness swag giveaway on St. Patrick's - sounds like a plan!

I have visited this pub only once and will never go back. While the atmosphere was nice and "pub-like" the food was terrible and so was our server. I ordered the Crab Cakes (disgusting) I even told the waitress in hence to take them off my bill. She brought my bill and they were still on there. I paid for them because I don't like complaining but I left hungry. Nobody else at our table was very satisfied either. The server was sweet at first but then seemed very aggravated when a few more friends showed up to join us in dinner. I will never return. :( YUCK!

I love the fish here. It is awesome. I don't like seafood much and usually am not a fan of fish but theirs is great. Their special made tarter is especially great to boot. The staff has also been very friendly and prompt every time I have gone.

The shepherds pie is wonderful! One of my favorite places to eat in Louisville! The owner is from Ireland and specializes in true Irish fare. The fish and chips are good, scotch eggs and then there is the homemade Irish sausages in the bangers and mash. We have been coming there for 15 years and have never had a bad meal!

I don't know if we just picked a bad night but for me, Irish Rover was just meeeeh. We were seated pretty quickly for it being a Friday trolley hop night, so I was excited about that. Me + Starving + Quick Seating = Awesome right off the bat. I was expecting this to be a good meal. After about 15 minutes with no attention, I was starting to get antsy. If I weren't so hungry, I probably wouldn't have minded as much. Although, I think 15 minutes is a rather long time to be seated at a restaurant without a server acknowledging our presence. I was especially surprised seeing as how we were seated so quickly. Finally, our orders were taken. After about another 30 minutes, our food came. By this point, I was about to eat my napkin. I honestly didn't care how the food tasted. I just wanted to eat it. It wasn't awesome but it wasn't bad either. Overall, the food was okay. My rating more reflects the experience. I just don't think it's acceptable to be ignored for so long at a sit-down restaurant. I'm sure one day we will give The Irish Rover another chance but until then, my first choice for Irish is still Molly's!

I'm feeling generous, but it was just a good time. We turned the Irish Rover into an Irish Tapas bar. Our crowd ordered the salmon au gratin (delish), fish and chips (yum and huge portion), the salmon pate (especially good with the onions), the blue cheesecake (sagey!), the salmon puffs (mmm mmm) and sticky toffee pudding. Of course no Irish meal is complete without several pints of cider, beer etc. the service was beyond excellent (Charles, nice welsh -American lad :). I'll definitely go again when on Louisville!

In town for the week and always looking for local, non-chain restaurants and I found this place. Highly reviewed 4 stars on yelp. I gave it 3 stars because outside and inside appearance doesn't look like much and frankly didn't make me feel like the place was clean. Service was attentive and quick. I had a bowl of their Guinness beef stew and it was amazing. Large chunks of meat and potatoes, good flavor and very filling. The menu seemed to have a lot of choices, but looked like they hadn't printed a new menu in 20 years. Table next to me got fish-n-chips and it looked wonderful as well. Food and service was very good. They need to look at updating their building inside and out and this place would be a 4 or 5 star place.

Great atmosphere, great service. I was there with 2 other people and we all ordered different things to eat. I had the fish and chips. The fish was amazing!!! So why on earth would they serve it with frozen French fries!?!? Over all a good experience. Could you all just get some actual potatoes for fries???

Ate here again and was not disappointed. The service was perfect and the beer was cold. Red Rover is so smooth going down I could drink it all day. Today I got the fish and chips and the aubergine (appetizer). Wow, the aubergine was incredible (but needed more bread to eat it on). The fish and chips were steaming hot and tasted great being washed down with my Red Rover beer, mmmm. Goodness.

If you're looking for good Irish food, you can find it here. I went with a group of 8, everyone was happy. I had the stew which I liked immensely. The one thing I measure an Irish place by is the bangers and will have to do that next time. Only thing that would make it better would be trad music.

Based on the great reviews, I really wanted to wash away the bad memories of my failed Chicago St Patrick's Day with an evening at the Irish Rover. But the sign on their door read "Closed Thursday, March 18 for a mental health day. We will reopen on Friday, March 19." Major bummer for me. FYI to anyone trying to visit on 3/18/11.

It doesn't get any more authentic than this, it has the feel, the look, the smell, the flavor and the ambiance of an Irish restaurant. Truly authentic Irish cuisine, and they really know how to pour a Guinness. It's simply perfect !

Irish food. Yum. Potato and leek soup, fish and chips. Garlic mayo. All good things. I've been here a few times, with mixed reviews. Once it was decent, one time it was great and this last time I wasn't terribly impressed. So for starters, it is in a great location. Has a nice patio (at least April-Oct) and it's own lot which is big on Frankfort Ave. There is also almost always a wait and it feels like the tables are just a bit too much on top of each other. If this was just an Irish pub that would be fine, but it is more of a fine dining than a pub. I get the Leek and Potato every time, and it is always pretty good. This last time the chunks of potato were massive but it still had decent flavor. The Prawn and Cashew Salad was a bit disappointing. The dressing was nice, but there were just 4 or 5 shrimp and a gazillion cashews. And I love cashews, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were as many nuts as leaves of lettuce in this $10 salad. Meh. The salmon burger with dill mayo I had the time before was really nice, and the first time clearly didn't make enough of an impact for me to remember either way. I did try my friend's fish and chips and they were pretty good. Definitely worth checking out, I just might not suggest it personally. But avoid on a Trolley Hop night. (I always mix up if it is the Last Friday or First Friday as the other is downtown.) Also, it is a lot of fun for St Patty's how they put up the big tent and it's a bit more of a late 20s/30s crowd than Irish Row in the Highlands. Slainte!

It's tough to rate an establishment that you've been frequenting for over half your life-span. Though never a Louisville resident, I started coming to the Rover as a kid, out on family get-togethers. Big room, little room, bar, piano bench, outdoors, upstairs; I believe the kitchen is the only part of the Rover I haven't seen. At this point, it's basically part of the family, a structural manifestation of goodwill. Fish-and-chips are the go-to; the fish is a hunk that's perfectly cooked, with a breading that manages to be light & crunchy at the same time, never too thick, bready, or overdone. The bangers are European-style (re: fine grind), the Guinness stew enough for two. Of course there's Guinness, but last I visited there were some local brews on tap, as well as Dogfish's 60-Minute IPA, and Thirsty Dog's Siberian Night. Yes, please! The baskets of bread delivered each time are no slouch either; punchy sourdough and malty soda bread, with copious bars of real butter. I used to have bread-eating contests with my brother in the days where my metabolism was still at the level of a hummingbird. It is fairly packed-in, though that's all part of the charm of being in such an old building/house. From the childhood picture above the mantle, to the forest green bar booths, and the lonely piano & cigarette machine corner 'neath a sloped ceiling (that's how it looks in my brain at least); charm isn't something the Rover lacks, and the amount isn't something that you can just acquire. Here's to hoping it never goes away, because without a visit here, a trip to Louisville just feels a bit empty.

This wouldn't be my first choice of restaurant, or 2nd...or 3rd... in fact I probably wouldn't go here had it not been someone else's choice. But business dinner is a business dinner and I was pleasantly surprised! Scotch eggs are SO GOOD! (Deep-fried savouries of hard-boiled egg and sausage which are a staple in English pubs...with mustard). Mushrooms app was good as well. Got the Guinness Beef Stew...if you read my other Louisville reviews you know why, but it wasn't very exciting. Couldn't taste any trace of Guinness. But the rest of the menu does look good to my surprise... the rest of the party loved their fish n chips and Irish BLT. I had a beer that was named after a character from Braveheart and it was great! As was the environment!

This place has character! Sitting at the bar I forgot I was in Louisville, it seems like the most authentic Irish pub in town. After seeing the menu, it has the most authentic dishes so I would say if you want Irish pub come here. We had the Scotch Egg, you only need one it was huge. Very interesting concept, but it works, first time I have ever had a Scotch Egg. Also tried the Cordon Bleu Fritters, these were better than the egg, would recommend this if you had to choose. She had the cottage pie, which looks amazing when it comes out. We thought it lacked in flavor, but was very filling. I had the chicken cashel blue, which sounds awesome on the menu. Assuming I got the bread pudding, it was basically a slice of bread pudding deep fried. Not good and not at all what I expected. Chicken was ok, mornay sauce was a bit thin and not enough flavor. I was not impressed with the meal overall, it was different than most pubs, but still the same quality. No reason with a little tweaking the food can't go from just ok to great. I would go back for a drink and and app, but would find something else if I was just looking for dinner.

I spend a couple of weeks in Louisville every summer, and this is the number one spot I always come to. So lets forget that the Guiness is always served JUST RIGHT for a second. The bread that they serve before the meal with the Irish Butter is to DIE for! I mean it, I always end up eating too much and getting full mid- meal As for the meal, I always try to order something different but end up gravitating towards the Potato Leek soup.. yum, yum. Love the sign in front that says "All unattended children shall be sold as slaves" I always point it out to mine.

Great, authentic Irish cuisine. My friend even said the malt vinegar was authentic vs. American - whatever that means. I had the lamb stuffed cabbage with "champ" - mashed potatoes, and they were amazing! The only thing keeping me from a 5-star rating was our server. She was very monotoned and unenthusiastic, and also came to collect our signed receipts immediately after we signed them... ???

Went there as part of my birthday weekend extravaganza... I've been going there every year I'm in Louisville, so the number of visits is adding up. I've always had excellent food there with friendly service. It can be very, very loud, so don't go if you want a quiet, romantic dinner. The beer selection - both draught and in bottles - is excellent, and the food is superb. I had the whiskey steak the last time I was there, which had a mushroom cream sauce. My only complaint: more sauce! I highly recommend the flourless chocolate cake for dessert..... yum!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place tucked away in Louisville. My husband and I have eaten here three times and have always left with a big smile! We truly enjoy the atmosphere, the food is AMAZING and so is the ON TAP selection. My favorites are the mussels, the bangers and mash, and the fish and chips. I was brave enough to try the scotch eggs and have fallen in love! You have to visit and find your favorite dish!

Usually the best fish n chips anywhere but yesterday, overcooked and tasteless. The fries tasted like they were cooked hours earlier and left under the lights. The Guinness made up for it.

Traditional Irish/ scottish fare (however it is not a typical US Irish pub). The menu isn't full of typical pub food, but to good, traditional "comfort" food you would find in a real Irish restaurant. Most of the servers and bartenders here were actually Irish the last time I was here as well.

Irish Rover, I miss you. You know that, don't you? There's no place like you in Chicago, which is just WRONG, given Chicago's Irish American heritage. While Chicago based joints long ago bowed to the mainstream, adding jalapeno poppers and "Irish nachos" to the menu, forsaking traditional items, you haven't. You have just the right balance of old school and new, vegetarian and meatatarian, brew pub and family friendly restaurant. Your food is cheap, and oh-so-good (don't get me started on the cheese and chive fritters, or the bubble and squeak, or the simple deliciousness of the ploughman's platter). Your servers are just nice. Good, nice, helpful people. Your soup (woe is the day I had to give it up after becoming vegetarian) is a gift from the Gods. The Irish Rover is the perfect place for a date, a dinner with family, a beer with old friends, or pretty much anything else. The atmosphere is low key enough that you can really make it your own; it suits whatever mood you're in. And don't forget, Louisville, there's nothing else like it this side of the Atlantic.

I went there after work one day and was blow away! It has been about five years since going there and all that I remembered of the place was that it had a nice atmosphere and tasty food. But boy was I surprised to find that the menu was full of reasonably-priced meals (under ten dollars) and drinks (such as a half-pint of strongbow for three dollars). The selection of food is incredible! I picked the sausage roll and was served a plentiful amount of sausages on fresh french bread buns. Yum! I would definitely head back to the Irish Rover for its atmosphere and prompt service, with cheap flavorful food to boot! Read more reviews of Louisville eats at : claireeatstheworld.blogs…

I really want to give this place 5 stars, but the inconsistent quality of servers keeps me from doing so. Maybe there aren't enough people working, but seems like it usually takes forever between steps at the table. Took awhile to even be able to order drinks, then get them, then order apps and entree, then get the app, etc. I was worried they stopped serving the delicious chewy sourdough and brown bread because it took so long to be brought to the table. That is the kind of bread you bring home, if there is any left! My family has been going here for at least 15 years. I don't live here anymore, but when I visit this is a must stop. Oh, how I long for a place in Raleigh that has fish and chips as amazing as this! The breading is perfectly light and crunchy. The cod or haddock is fresh and melts in your mouth. Even the steak fries alongside it are perfectly cooked and surprisingly ungreasy. The cheese and chive fritters will do the tango on your tongue. Make sure you dip them into the tiny jar of spicy mustard to get an extra kick! The owner is always fraternizing with the customers with a smile on his face. And, yes, he is Irish! He will even sit down with you for a bit if there is an empty chair. He seems to really care about his customers. I have found this to be rare. There is a giant, charming picture of him as a little boy hanging up. The building is actually pretty old and has plaster walls and more old pictures. I actually like that type of cozy feel for a pub. I think it fits well. I would be disappointed if it was updated.

Nice atmosphere and staff. Enjoyed hanging out in the bar before our large party was seated. Atypically, bar stocked a large selection of both Jamieson's (Irish Republic) and Bushmill (Northern Ireland) whiskies. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype of the other reviews. I had a very good spinach salad, followed by some over-fried and over-battered salmon/cod fish cakes, with a fresh but forgettable side of cooked veggies and mashed potatoes. One of my friend's meals arrived cold (but-to the restaurant's credit-was quickly replaced by a brand new plate that was piping hot). Guinness flourless chocolate cake was just a large chocolate truffle; not bad tasting but too too rich to enjoy.

Oh man, oh man. I have family in Louisville and every time I visit this restaurant is my first stop! The food here is soooooo good! And the bread... oh that delicious, delicious wheat bread! I could just eat that! Everything I've ever tried on the menu is amazing! But the best thing here is definitely the Potato Leek Soup. Wowza! I am NOT a soup fan by any stretch of the imagination. To put it quite simply, I hate soup. But I LOVE me some potato leek soup! It's just so... scrumptious. Yep, that's my word choice and I'm stickin' to it because it's just so good! I would recommend this place to any and everyone I know going to Louisville!

This place is very unique. The atmosphere is the best thing going for it. The lighting, decoration, crowd and service all help to provide a warm, relaxing and almost family-style environment. Of course the food was good and the dessert was outstanding. The locally brewed beer is fantastic. Would recommend this place to anybody of any age and to groups of any size. I would love to go back!

It's your standard Irish pub, with above-average food. My irish sausage sandwich was good, and my wife enjoyed her Welsh rabbit. And, most importantly for an Irish pub, it served Guinness that was poured correctly.

Decent, not great. The beer is cold, and the fish and chips are great. Well, the fish is great, the fries are fries. That said, the crab cakes aren't worth buying. Small, thin and soggy, the overpowering flavor of bell pepper completely wipes out anything resembling crab.

Can't get over the Rover! The best in Irish Pub Food. Don't hesitate to go to Frankfort Ave and find your own favorite table. The best in fish and chips and mashed veggies. A friendly atmosphere that calls you back during any visit to Louisville or La Grange. The La Grange Pub is as delightful as well and at times you can find a wee bit of the live Irish music being played to heighten your experience.

So, I had been given info that the Irish Rover was the real deal and it was worth checking out. We came for dinner to a half-full restaurant. Oh I should mention that this building used to be a saloon and grocery store back in the day. The saloon is still there, but the grocery area is now a dining room where we sat. It is just delightful with the old windows and woodwork. A charming space. And aside from this table of 6 completely loud & obnoxious middle aged people that drowned out any other noise in the room we enjoyed our meal there. The service and the atmosphere was quite good but these people and their yap, yap, yap! The worst part was that they all seemed to be from Chicago, so I was terribly embarrassed. You could hear almost a collective sigh of relief as they paid their check and left. We ordered the Blue Cheesecake to start, which was a "cheesecake" of blue and cream cheeses in a walnut crust, served warm with brown soda bread and pear vinaigrette. I highly recommend this appetizer. So delish! I then ordered the Irish Smoked salmon as my dinner, which was served with lemon, onion, brown soda bread and Coleman's mustard. If you dont know what Coleman's tastes like, be careful - it has got quite a kick to it! There are so many things on this menu that looked good, it was so hard to decide. But its a good reason to come back!

I had tried food at Irish pubs in the past and nothing compares to the Irish Rover. Great atmosphere, service, and excellent food. Their menu is completely Irish. It is not the typical Irish pub that has burgers and chicken fingers and then adds corned beef to the menu so that they can call themselves Irish. I have tried many things here and have been very pleased with everything. My favorite is an appetizer called a scotch egg, it is incredible. For something different, give them a try!!!

Stopped in for lunch with Andy P. during our road trip from Dallas to Connecticut, as Andy said, because the Bourbon Bistro didn't open until dinner. We had bourbon, and it was good. Andy, being Andy, immediately yelled for everyone in the restaurant to shut up and started telling me how much he respected me (naw, that didn't happen). I had the shephard's pie, which was solid yet unspectacular. The best part was the potatoes, which, strangely, complimented the mashed potatoes well. Really good, but not -quite- as good as I expected. Ambiance: 20/25 stars Food: 18/25 stars Service: 22/25 stars Bathroom: 20/25 stars Probability of going back: 10% (I don't live in Louisville!)

When my boyfriend was stationed in Kentucky over the summer we went to Louisville when I came to visit. The last time we werein KY we decided to try this place out. We went to dinner around 8, and the bar was packed but the restaurant wasn't too busy. We sat outside on their patio, which was amazing. The sourdough bread basket they brought was so delicious, I could not get enough. For dinner I got a salad with salmon, and my bofriend got a burger. The food was delicious and so were the drinks. I got a manhattan straight up and my boyfriend got an irish coffee. For dessert we had flan, which was also exceptional. It was so good that on the last night we had in KY before flying home we stopped in again. This time I had the guiness beef stew and it was so good, for dessert we shared a chocolate cake. This place is definitely worth going to.

Closest thing I've found to a pub in the US yet, and the best Guinness pour I've had outside of Boston or NYC. The crowd and staff are always good, too. They don't serve lots of Ketel Red Bulls, ergo low probability of douchebags. The food is good, hearty pub fare. Always good - the only suggestion I'd have is to price it more like an English pub (say, $7 fish and chips instead of $12).

Ahhh "the Rover," home to one of my favorite appetizers of ALL TIME. The Scottish Egg. This little delicacy is a hard-boiled egg, wrapped in sausage, dipped in batter, deep fried, and served with a spicy mustard. It's roughly the size of my fist. Anytime anyone in my family mentions The Irish Rover, I immediately think of this and begin to salivate... The Irish Rover is an authentic Irish Pub located in Louisville, KY. Therefore the menu is isn't overly sexy and wow-ing but it is still tasty and hearty. Lots of meat and potatoes such as the glorious Bangers and Mash entree also good with spicy mustard.... If you're lucky enough to eat here on the weekend you will find a very loose ensemble playing some tight Irish music. They always sounds fantastic and add to the overall ambiance. I am not a big fan of eating here during the summer months and most of what I like to order is relatively hearty and filling, but during the winter months... DAMN. There is nothing like peeling off your heavy coat as you escape from the cold and sitting down to a Guinness and a Shepard's Pie. A wee bit o' heaven....

Recently, Randy S. and I were in Louisville and trying to get drunk before noon on Bourbon. Unfortunately for us, though, we miscalculated the hours on the nearby Bourbon Cafe and ended up needing a recommendation for lunch on Louisville's lovely Frankfort St. The recommendation we got was Irish Rover. I like Irish food, so I was all in for it and Randy was game as well. We started off what was a pretty excellent lunch with some Pappy Van Winkle (the name makes me cringe a little, but it is at least nominally authentic, so fair enough) Bourbon to accomplish our goal of getting drunk. Randy has a more developed insulation from the effects of alcohol, but I--on the other hand--am a cheap date and so after downing this lovely Bourbon, I ate lunch drunk. I generally love Irish food and so was psyched to see that this Irish place had lots of actual Irish food (see my review of Black Finn in Dallas for an opposing experience). I had bangers and mash. Its not the most exotic thing to have, but it was really good. The bangers themselves were truly outstanding, and they served Colman's mustard along side which was also wonderful. Randy's food, I'll let him review, but definitely seemed good and the whole standard of the place was of the type where you wouldn't really be afraid to try anything, because it all looked good and certainly seemed that the people responsible for the Rover truly care about what goes on there. The food was very solid, the atmosphere was lovely and the service was very good. I wouldn't hesitate to come again and I'm sure if I lived in Louisville, I'd end up there quite a bit. Really a lovely place.

The fish and chips are great, as are other menu items. My only complaint is that the prices for beer outpace the competitors by a dollar for some imports by the pint.

Oh how I love the Rover. True im Scottish and not Irish, but its the closest I can get to home. I love their fried Cheese starter, although the Scotch Eggs come a close second. Best Potato and Leek soup ive tasted here in the states, and almost anything from the entree menu is to die for. All thats missing from the menu is some Black Pudding and/or Haggis. Their range of Irish/British Ales and Lagers on tap is the best, and its great being a small girl finishing off a nice pint of Tennants before the men folks. Baileys Cheese cake or Guinness Chocolate cake to finish off your meal and you will be in heaven.

As a KY newbie we've been trying different restaurants that catch my eye. Wasn't to sure about the Irish Rover as we went in, but realized that I suddenly felt transported to some of the pubs I've visited in the UK. Hamburger was good, Fries (or should I say "chips") were fantastic, the BBB Irish Red Rover beer was amazing. We enjoyed the "neighborhood" bar feel and will be back for more soon.

Once I get cut off at a place do I ever go back. The Irish Rover is the exception. I moved back to Louisville in the mid-90's. I had been to New York and Dallas, places where you could find a decent Guinness. I spent most of my first summer back trying to find such a place in my old hometown. When one day I was driving down Frankfort and saw a new place called the Irish Rover.'They have to know how to pour a Guinness', I said to myself(outloud no less). During the first pour, the bartender apologized for the amount of time it was taking.I explained that what little patience I have was learned from waiting for my Guinness.Because I found my oasis, I drank a few and then a few more when I was informed I was cut off by the owner who came by to explain why. When I came back the next week ,the owner, Michae,l remembered me explained again why he cut me off and I thanked him and we have been tight ever since.I even had my rehearsal dinner there-aside from my son the best part of the former marriage. When my true love came back to town from L.A. the 'Rover' was tops on her list of places she wanted me to take her. Apart from the perfect Guinness, EVERYBODY has to try the heart attack waiting to happen known as the Scotch Egg.It is the most decadent appetizer and is worth every calory and clogged artery. The rest of the menu offers great salads for the summer and comforting stews and soups during the fall/winter.One of the best in Louisville!

3.5 but the great vibe bumped it up. Went once and shared clam chowder, the salad with balsamic and cheese, and the fish and chips. The best part of the meal was the white bread. Everything else was kinda bland. Went back a second time and had the portobello sandwich. It was yummy. Great building and decent beer list.

My husband and I wanted to try something different in the Louisville area we heard about the Irish Rover. We went about 6-630 on a sat evening and was able to find a seat right away. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu.We ordered a app called Bubble & Squek which was awesome and had a wonderful presentation My husband was going to order the Guinness Beef Stew and she recommend another dish clalled the Cottage Pie that was the same thing but more. I ordered the Rover Salmon and it was cooked perfect! It came with a very sizable portion of Mashed Potatos. As far as price it was reasonable trust me we all would like to pay less when we go out to eat but for the two of us in ordering an app, two meals, my husband a beer, and desert is was about 45 which we thought was less then expected and worth the price. The bread they bring out you could tell it was fresh baked bread. This was a wonderful place to dine and they have a wide selection of drinks. Check them out I am sure you will be pleased with this place. We look forward to going back.

I remember a time when the Irish Rover used to be better, MUCH better. Alas, those days seem to be gone. The Fish and Chips was formerly one of the best, now it's just average. Also, the attentiveness of the service has also diminished. The beer selection is pretty good. However, I must rate this place with 2 stars as the food and service has dwindled to average or below. I hope that they come back, but I won't hold my breath.

My family and I always enjoy visiting the Rover when we're in Louisville. The scotch eggs are the best. It's a fun and relaxing environment and very authentic.

The Irish Rover use to be one of my favorite restaurants. It had great food and great ambiance. However, things change. I went to the Rover last night for the last time. Over the last year and a half I have gone to the rover a few times. With every meal my opinion has gotten worse and worse. Last night was the final for me. My girlfriend had the Welsh Rabbit which use to have cheddar cheese on it. Last night it was american cheese, I think they put a pound on the sandwich. This use to be a really good grilled cheese sandwich. Tell me how you can screw up grilled cheese? I had a burger that I ask to be medium well ( i know but i rarely get burgers rare unless i know where the meat has been.) It was well done and tasteless. The server wasn't very good and she kept spilling beer and she handed us our drinks like a bucket brigade. The rover still has great outside dinning and they still have great beer. I just can't recommend them for food anymore. The owners are clearly milking their cash cow and letting the place go to hell! I hope that they see this and check their quality. As i always say in my reviews, I hate writing a bad review because that means I have had a bad meal that i spent good money on.

When the weather is fine and I feel walking to a pub, this is where I go. I like to sit outside and order appetizers.

A very authentic Irish Pub, owned and operated by a guy from Ireland. EXCELLENT food and extremely reasonable in price. Absolutely the best fish and chips in town. Scotch Eggs (don't ask about fat grams though) are a must for an appetizer. Service is usually decent, quality of food is always great.
