I was very satiated. I did not want to eat. My family was craving Japanese. I found this place on my phone. The Salad was mediocre. I had water so I brought in some hyper caffeinatted tea bags so I could up my hate for the world. I'm started this review and I'm finishing it in a redactive manner. I started this review in a very bad, tired mood. Ad I recall we had a very good meal there. So I'm upping my review from 2 stars to 3.

Air conditioning has been out for days. Hot! Food is good when AC works. New owners are not interested in fixing the problem. Oh well. Tip your server, they didn't cause the problem.

Shogun is a pretty good option when you're craving Americanized Japanese food or the hibachi experience. Honestly, all the Japanese hibachi steakhouses I've been to are pretty cookie cutter. I've been to a few in Louisville, and they've all been similar to me. The same atmosphere: you're seated around a hibachi table, usually with strangers, to watch the chef prepare your meal. The same menu choices: some meat served with rice and vegetables, starting off with soup, salad, and shrimp appetizer. The chefs all have the same cooking flow, even the same jokes (you know what I'm talking about - the onions stacked into a choo choo train, tossing bits of rice into your mouth, etc). The same pricing: dinner is overpriced as hell for the quality of food received, but the lunch prices are a pretty good deal. For every hibachi grill I've been to, the service is on the slow side and the food is average. The lettuce with ginger dressing is usually a winner (i.e. ginger dressing). The mushroom soup is nice and salty. Your dry shreds of meat are served with some vegetables and fried rice, which is hard to screw up. The flavor of the meal comes from whatever sauce you chose to smother your plate in. Shogun is no different. It's your typical Japanese steakhouse as described above. However, it is probably my favorite in Louisville for the following reasons: 1. Their mustard sauce. Every hibachi grill gives you two sauces with your meal: one is a mustard base and one is a ginger base. Each steakhouse's sauce tastes a little different. Shogun's is my favorite. It is more tangy and mustardy than others. I get extra and pour it all over my meal. 2. Their vegetables. I love that Shogun gives you zucchini, broccoli, mushrooms, and onions with your meal. This is much more variety than others provide. These two reasons make Shogun stand out enough to be my favorite Japanese steakhouse, but not enough to elevate it to above "A-OK." Because of the cookie cutter approach to hibachi dining, you have to really stand out for me to give you higher than three stars. Shogun is right on par with your typical Japanese steakhouse.

The chef was great, best I ever had. I would give him a 30% tip and the waitress should have paid me. The manager was hard to work with. The food was average. They took 25 minutes to get our bill. They did not put our order in until halfway through dinner. Then, they did not take ANYTHING off the bill... Which was 185 dollars by the way. Do not go there. Go to Sake Blue in Fern Creek! (I put one star because that was the minimum required)

The hibachi guy was good; otherwise, the service was disappointing. We had to ask for water, drink refills, and kid chopsticks 3 and 4 times.

Its been a few years since we've been here, will certainly be our last. They are severely understaffed as we counted our server managing at least 10 tables on his own. We had plenty of time to count in-between waiting for everything. The unfortunate thing is that our server would likely get poor tips because of this but he, to us, was doing his best to keep up and make good of the poor situation management had him in. Sushi was sub-par and calamari tasted like fried rubber.

Wow, what a terrible experience. I came back into town after being away for 10 years and was really looking forward to eating here again. Stood at front counter in the cramped entryway for five minutes before a host casually walked by and stopped to asked who we were with. So no host on duty on a Saturday night. Second waiter came by and while we were ordering behaved very inpatient with my friend who asked questions about the menu. When I ordered I pointed at the menu and said shrimp vegetable hibachi. He basically slide the salads and soups to us. Spilling it. But they were both good. Got our food. Friend got what he had wanted. I did not. I got what mistakenly pointed at. Not what I ordered. When I informed politely and apologetically that it was my fault (which it wasnt). I got a lecture on what temporary meant. And that I should have asked for the hibachi menu. Which I didn't know existed and he didn't offer. After giving me grief "I mean... u guess I can get the manager but I don't kbow....". I kept the food in fear that the manager and cooks were as unprofessional as him. The food was extremely bland. And despite the fact it was 30 degrees outside flies were everywhere around my food. Asked for the check and a box and ten minutes later he came back with a check. I got my own box. I've ran restaurants and a bad server indicates bad management and training. Bad management indication bad food (which I got and is now in my trash can). And who the hell has three menus.

No. Just no. I love hibachi and sushi. Often, if we're in a hurry we'll order hibachi shrimp or chicken at a regular table. It's faster and tastes the same. We stopped in to Shogun for dinner because it was convenient, and we'd been there before for lunch and couldn't remember having a bad experience. We should have driven a couple blocks down to Kensai instead. We asked questions of our waitress at Shogun "can I have no rice?" She didn't know. "How many pieces is the ____ roll?" She didn't know. When the meal came she didn't come back to ask how everything was, which was irritating because we wanted Mustard Sauce. She had to be flagged down, and looked lost. Maybe she was new, but tell us that. Not telling us you're new only makes us feel like you couldn't care less that we're at your table. We had a roll that fell apart upon pick up with chopsticks, which indicates the sushi chefs didn't put it together very well in the first place. Terriyaki Shrimp was only "okay". It was overcooked. I went two stars because the staples like the Clear Soup, yes, it's clear soup, broth and mushrooms. Previous reviewers complaining that it was "hardly soup" obviously don't know the difference between Clear Soup and Miso Soup. You can request either. But clear soup is pretty universal across all Japanese Steakhouses, so... I digress, the clear soup, hibachi vegetables, and ginger dressing on the salad are pretty spot on. All in all though, the service and main dishes were unimpressive and don't warrant more than two stars. Kensai is right down the street and better. Mikato is better, or if you really want to treat yourself, drive out to Sake Blue in Fern Creek.

We got a babysitter to go out on date night. After arriving here for dinner on a Thursday night, nobody came to get our order for 20 minutes so we left.

My husband and I love shogun and have been eating here on a regular basis for years! We have never had a bad experience with the food. We have always had decent service, never had to wait long the food is always great and they allow us to make changes to the sushi to get just what we want and it's delicious. The chefs and waiters have always catered to our son who is 3 when we bring him playing with him, giving him some food on his plate (no charge) and making it a great experience for all of us.

For a guy who doesn't venture much into Sushi cuisine, I was pleased. The Food was good. The room was cold as ice.

Friendly with a wide range of grill and sushi options. Chefs put on a good show at the grills.

Bottom line: Go down the street to Kansai, if you want a cleaner restaurant, better drinks and food. I didn't realize how badly this place had degraded. Unfortunately I listened to some poor advice, and was reminded by why I stopped going to this place. Sticky tables - check. Cough syrup for a martini - check. Chicken teriyaki from a bag - check. Sushi that used more fake crab than anything else - check. Overstuffed pond of Koi fish that hasn't been cleaned in who knows how long - check. Hopefully Shogun has signed up for Kitchen Nightmares or something.

I don't enjoy giving negative reviews on restaurants, but the service today at Shogun was inexcusable. Today, I went to lunch with 4 of my friends from work. After arriving at around 12:30 pm, we understood when someone told us that it would be 5 minutes for a hibachi table. Then, someone else came back a few minutes later and also told us that it would be 5 minutes. This should have been our first sign that this was going to be an interesting meal. We sat down a few minutes later and were left sitting there for at least 15 minutes. No one that worked there even acknowledged our table. Right before we were going to leave, a very frazzled looking server came over to take our orders. He said that they were slammed, but did not apologize for our wait. When he got to our group, he was very surprised (and seemed annoyed) that we were all going to be on separate checks. After that, we were aggravated with the way we were treated, but felt like things may start moving. Twenty minutes later, after not seeing our server again and still not receiving ANYTHING, our group got up and left. I am aware that the schools were out today for snow, so they were probably much busier than they had originally anticipated, but it is still poor customer service to not acknowledge paying customers and to not even apologize for their wait. I will not be returning to Shogun after this incident and I will strongly discourage anyone from going there again.

Went to lunch, by far the worst Japanese restaurant in town . I have ordered every steak on lunch menu as have noticed every steak looks the same and taste the same. This restaurant is dirty and staff treat customers Poorly. I suggest you look for a different japanese restaurant .

In the past this has been a good restaurant. That is no longer the case. My son has food issues and cannot eat here. We have never been charged for him sitting with us until now. They argued with us until we threatened to never come back. I will not return.

Food was good, I really enjoyed it. The only thing is I would say is that Organization is not the best, I made a reservation for an specific time and people keep walking in till I said something to the waitress. Overall good experience.

I've eaten at shogun several times throughout the years and always had a pleasant experience. However, my most recent experience was very different. The sushi bar was covered and patched with drawer liners that had brown adhesive seeping out the sides. I ordered a deep fried lobster roll but the lobster was fried on the outside and slimy on the inside. It also smelled very fishy (not fresh). I am disappointed that this place has "let itself go".

I dont know why this place has such bad reviews. We eat there at least every other week. Its our fav place! Great food, great service. Rod is the best chef there but I have never had a bad meal from any of the chefs. Once in a while we get a slow server, but other than that we have never had a bad time there.

Terrible. That pretty much describes the totality of our dining experience at Shogun. After driving past Shogun everyday to/from work, we decided to give it a try. Bad idea. The service -- below average. Most of the waiters were too busy flirting with the hostesses to be of any help. The food -- potentially the worst Japanese food I've ever had. The Tonkatsu was rubbery, the soft-shell crab was mushy and even the rice didn't taste fresh. (It's a Japanese restaurant, the very least they can do is get the rice right!) The only redeeming thing about the food -- the dressing on the small side salad was tasty. The establishment -- we went to Shogun thinking we would have a semi-nice dinner. Instead, we watched as kid after kid ran around the restaurant and played hide-and-go-seek on the small bridge in the middle of the room. If I wanted to eat poor quality food while watching kids play on a jungle-gym I would go get McDonald's and sit outside in the playground. Even then, the service would probably be better and for one-fourth of the price.

I walked in thinking it would be Benihana cheesiness, Cheesecake factory prices and Sizzler's quality food. While there was definitely the chef's performance and the launching of multiple pieces of food at the faces of my dining companions, the rest of the experience here was a very pleasant surprise. Generous portions of food and the filet mignon I had was very tendor and delicious. The scallops were large, juicy and cooked just right. The onion volcano was cool, the salad had ample delcious ginger dressing and the extra large Asahi washed it all down. The tempura fried ice-cream was the only disappointment as the ice cream had frostbite (tasted crystalized). Someone ordered the sashimi plate and to my surprise, the fish looked fresh and delicious. The icing on the cake was the corporate credit card that paid for the whole meal.

The first time I ate here I was really excited that I've found a sushi place that was really good. The next time I came, I had a coupon to use and apparently the waitress didn't like it at all and she made sure to write how much her tip was going to be and explained it to me like I was a 4 year old. I'm a very good tipper when it comes to good service, but since she said the amount she wanted, that's what she got. Nothing seemed like it was the first time. I decided to give them one more shot, hoping last time was just a "bad experience" and it was a complete failure as well. Food quality was horrible, had to use soy sauce for flavor (which i NEVER use) and we ended up with the same rude waitress. I've completely given up on this place. If you want cheaper sushi around the area worth eating, give ichiban a try. What can I say, three strikes-you're out!

I like shogun. I am surprised by the more negative reviews. We always order hibachi, and it is great! I think their fried rice is stellar. They do have a bridge with a coy pond in the front, and it does attract the kiddos. If you dont want to be bothered, you dont have to sit by the bridge..... My only qualm with Shogun is the servers. Half of our visits, it seemed like we were a big inconvenience to the server just by being there. Other times we have had great service. Nothing so offensive that i would stop coming....

Shogun has mediocre food at best. The service was the same. The place appears quite old, and nothing has been refurbished, I suspect, since it opened many years ago. Do not expect any sort of ambience. The soup--and it is a stretch to call it that--was a simple, lukewarm broth with a slice or two of fresh mushrooms floating in it. The salad was iceberg lettuce soaked in a bland, ginger-type dressing. The entree items were the usual, and the steak (filet) was fairly tasty. Be wary of ordering anything exotic from the bar. Even a martini was a challenge for the bartender, and the vodka gimlet was undrinkable. Despite all this, the place was busy, and a fairly large crowd was waiting for tables when we left (Saturday night). Louisville is a great restaurant city, and I can't imagine how this place survives. It truly appears, facility wise, to be on its last legs.

I have had good experiences here. On my most recent visit I sat at the sushi bar and had an entire meal (2 sushi rolls) for under $13. Granted, I ordered the cheaper rolls, but they were excellent. The service could have been a little better, but it was still adequate. Overall, an above average experience, and I will go back.

Just went there with the family to enjoy a birthday dinner for my wife and had a wonderful experience. The wait staff was very attentive and helpful, the cook did a great job with the preparation and cooking of the food. I have seen better performances and more tricks but some of the staples were present like the onion volcano. The decor was great including a large Koy pond with bridge which My son enjoyed thoroughly. Our son was 18 mo. old and we were very skeptical about taking him but he was great and loved the fried rice. Once again the food was great, from the soup, to the salad then onto the entree which I had the salmon. We also shared a spicy tuna roll which came expertly prepared. I would totally go back!

I eat here pretty frequently. The service is usually great and the sushi is good. I don't think they are the best sushi in town, but the price is decent and the quality is always the same. The ginger salad dressing is good, and I try to get different rolls every time I'm there.

Portions are pretty good, but it doesn't make up for the quality of the meal. Really unimpressive wait staff. My waitress argued with me over the bill and then she went and got the manager who was even more clueless. It's really not that hard to keep track of what I ordered. They poured soy sauce and all sorts of weird stuff over my entire meal. I don't know why they would think I want to eat something like that. Just flat-out terrible. Avoid Shogun at all costs....there are so many other places to go.
