I like Rubbies, it's a small restaurant along with a bar!! Located on south side dr across from the speedway station. Very close to my neighborhood. The food is good for what it is, same with price. The pulled pork sandwich that I had recently was as close as I could get to what I usually order for "burger" nonetheless it was delicious. Plenty of barbecue sauce to go with it and fries. They also have daily specials which are a good deal if you're looking for some lunch in this area. I think this is a nice alternative to the hoops around the corner. The staff is friendly and the food is good. A wall of antiques and such separate the bar from the other side and you might miss it, I sure did. Also there's a pool table in the back!! How awesome is that! This is definitely the place to hit for good barbecue!

The best wings and potato skins in louisville. I have been going to Rubbies since they opened in 1989

I've been going here since I was a toddler and my father was playing open mic nights. The food is SPECTACULAR. My favorite is their wings and their chicken herb sandwich. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Louisville. I have mad respect for this joint. The prices are fair, it's clean, the service is great, and it's just an all around amazing place. Would give it 10 stars if I could.

We've been here before. Good food, service and craft beer selection. Tonight for whatever reason we were ignored at the bar for so long it got awkward and we left. Not likely to give them another chance.

The food here is great! However when they have events here it's very crowded. Tables are always in the way.

Living out here in South Louisville, whenever I go out for dinner, I usually choose a place that's new and local or a few of my favorite go tos in the Highlands or Downtown. I always forget about this gem close by. I've eaten or had a beverage or 2 here a handful of times in the 5 years I've lived nearby. I don't know why I forget it. The food is the best American food you can get in this end of town (check Vietname Kitchen or Little Jerusalem for great ethnic eats). Eat local (self)! And quit forgetting about Rubbies. PS - i had the chicken fingers (motor oil style) & will certainly be back for these when I want boneless hot "wings"..

I love their smoked wings! The brisket sandwich I got was also very good. The bar has an awesome selection of craft and domestic beers. Their bartenders are always friendly and make you feel at home. It can easily go from family dining, to fun neighborhood bar. My only criticism is that service can beer hit and miss in you are in the dining area. Some times it's spot on, some times you may have to remind a server a couple times to bring the check. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

This was one of the, like, 3 restaurants my parents would go to when I was a kid. It would annoy me, to say the least, when they hung out drinking with their friends and I had better things to be doing at home.. Like play video games. But my love for ranch dressing trumped all other feelings because Rubbies has always had THE best ranch ever. So I'd complacently gnaw on my ranch laden wings and salad. Now that my tastes are a little more, um, refined (?) I can find plenty of other dishes at Rubbies I enjoy, like the hot brown, and wide glide. The salads are still awesome as are the wings (drool). And don't leave without experiencing the premium Bloody Mary- garnished with freakin chicken wings!! It's definitely no frills, and service may sometimes leave a little bit to be desired, but it's really good, especially for the south end's limited choices.

My fiance and I came here on a Sunday for a couple of beers and some food. This place is across the street from our house and, despite having lived there for over a year, I had yet to try it (the fiance has lived in our home for close to 7 years so he has been many, many times!) We were greeted warmly upon walking in by the bartender/waitress, Debbie. I had heard great things about the smoked wings so I knew that that was what I would be getting - I ordered the entree with onion rings and a side of hot Motor Oil Sauce (the sauce that they toss their breaded wings in). Holy hell. Those smoked wings are famous for a reason! They were tender but had a kick from the house made rub. They came 8 to an order and they were so huge that I really only ate about 4 of them (don't worry, the fiance took care of the rest!) The onion rings were thick and hot and cooked nicely (i.e. the onion didn't slide out of the breading) and the Motor Oil Sauce was almost like a teriyaki sauce with one hell of a spicy kick! My fiance had the beef brisket sandwich with fries which was gigantic, messy, and apparently delicious as it was devoured quite quickly! 2 entrees, 3 beers, and 2 waters later we had only spent $34.00. We will be back!

Wow.... I've never walked into a restaurant and every table in the place was dirty the sign said have a seat anywhere so I went looking for a table...I saw the waitress so I asked again.... "Seat myself anywhere?" She said "Yer wherever ya like" well I didn't see any clean tables no one else looked like they were working in the dining room.. So I walked out got on yelp to find another place that was open at 9:40pm on a Sunday....well I stayed outside 10 minutes didn't feel like driving anyplace else so I walked back after seeing more people leaving....only to see there still was not one clean table to eat at....No one said anything to me to even try to get my business.... I JUST WALKED OUT... This place may have some good food that gave these good reviews but they need to HIRE A WORKING STAFF....THIS WAS HORRIBLE SERVICE..

Best wings I have ever had!! And the sauce that it comes with is outstanding, and I can't leave out the service, everyone I have ever had take care of me while I was there has been great checking up on my table in reasonable amount of times hanging out and talking with us or if we are with a group leaving us to chat amongst ourselves!

Have you ever had those places you've driven by hundreds of times in your life, but you have never stopped in? That's how Rubbies was for me. I remember seeing pigs on the windows when I was young and knowing my friends ate there. Yet, somehow, it wasn't until just months ago I finally set foot in Rubbies. I immediately regretted waiting so long to dine here! No, there are not many frills here. It's not fancy schmancy. However, the staff is friendly, and the food is good! There are some nice little touches too, like housemade ranch dressing (I literally crave this), making an otherwise average (i.e. iceberg lettuce) salad above average. I could drink that ranch out of a wine glass. They also have housemade kettle chips. The bbq options are good, my mom loves their chili, and they have some tasty looking specials (posted daily on their Facebook). They also have some local brews (I saw BBC.). It's in an area with unfortunately too few restaurants, so I appreciate it for that as well. It quickly went from a restaurant to which my family had never been to my family's "go to" restaurant. It's that good. (Random note: I believe they also have Keno, if you're interested in that.) There's also a bar which always seems to be popping if you go in the door on the left (facing the restaurant). I have not been over to that side, but who knows? Maybe I should do that sooner rather than later!

Just left Rubbies. Out of town from Texas. We walked in and sign said to seat yourselves. Waitress was talking to group of people and never once said anything to us. We walked out after sitting their for 10 minutes

Rubbies rubbed me the wrong way. Great food but terrible and rude service.

So, I love the food here but the service is ssssslllllllooooowwwww. The bar b q is delicious as everything, especially the homemade Ranch dressing. Get it with your salad, fries, chicken tenders, wings, bar b q, whatever. However, they need help in the kitchen, servers, everywhere . I ordered a salad and my husband ordered motor oil chicken tenders and fries well over a hour ago and we are still waiting. Disappointed in the service.

Rubbies is awesome. I was reminded of that last night when I stopped in before a concert. Had their nachos for the umpteenth time, but all of their food is awesome. Smoked wings, hot brown, specials of the day, etc. Not many draft beer selections, but what they have is always good beers. They had the Summer Ale yesterday as one of the three choices and it is yummy. I wish I still lived close to Rubbies so I could go more often.

I work in Beechmont and usually go to Rubbie's about once a week for lunch. It's also a go-to for my husband and I for dinner. The service is quick and friendly. The food is always delicious. Many meals here as well as several conversations with the owner have demonstrated that the family is passionate about serving food with quality and flavor. Their fried chicken salad is huge and fresh, brisket here is terrific. I had a reuben here once as a daily special, best reuben I ever had. Keep up the good work, Rubbie's!

Just not impressed. The spicy sauce for the wings was mostly vinegar, the portions were small, the burgoo simply wasn't burgoo, and the service was just mediocre. I'm sure some people find enjoyment in poor service, as they mistake it for "quaint", but I just found them moderately incompetent.

Take out is the way to go! The smoked wings outweigh all the negatives. Hands down best wings in town. The atmosphere isn't for everyone, but there is nothing to fear but not getting the smoked wings.

Breaded wings with mild sauce on the side were amazing. I've never had that thin of a sauce on wings. It was sooo good. The fries were fresh not frozen from a bag and perfectly cooked. My boyfriend had the huge cheeseburger and we both had left overs.

Seems to me like there's a decent amount of fellow culinary enthusiasts - foodies, if you will - that never seem to venture anywhere south of Poplar Level in their search for amendable dining options. This is a bit of a shame, because I really do think the South End ( my end of town) has a reasonable amount of great dives and eateries, offering a wide range of affordable eating options while eschewing the perceived atmosphere and pretentiousness of the more hip parts of town. I would definitely add Rubbies to this list. It's a great little dive, offering home-cooked, shit-kickin' American classics with their own added flair. It's a neighborhood bar and grill located on Southside Drive, right at the edge of Kentwood Hill, so it's the kind of place where you can wear a Skoal hat unironically and match it with a bitchin' pair of Crocs and not be made to feel underdressed. It's partitioned into a restaurant on the left side, and a bar on the right, and both sides have an old-timey, worn-out feel that makes for a very welcoming atmosphere. This joint is all about their Rubbies sauce, a recipe I like to think is written down in a dirty-ass binder locked behind a Walmart safe. It's a great sauce, especially if you order it spicy, and it makes for the kind of gloriously messy meal that requires a special kind of glutinous commitment. My wife, the cute chicken finger enthusiast up top, is lukewarm about the place but she's a picky eater so I would take this as a compliment. I have enjoyed their food greatly every time I've visited. Their chicken options are my favorite. I'm not a fan of breaded meat, but their breading is actually really good and again, anything with the Rubbies sauce is usually pretty great. Highly recommended. The service on the other hand is so-so, but I think they've been understaffed every time I've been there. In all, Rubbies is a quaint little joint offering great food at reasonable prices. The service could use a little improvement, but the bottom line is, this is a great option if you're feeling like washing down some great grilled bar food with cheap buckets of beer, the way it was intended.

Rubbies is hit or miss for me. I think it's great little dive bar but sometimes, I don't care for the not-so-friendly waitresses and they just piss me off. The food is typically pretty good. I get the chicken fingers (surprise, surprise) and they are usually pretty good. The last time I went they weren't great., so maybe they were having an off day. If you like grungy little dives, you will love this place.

Note - possibly 4 or 5 stars on next visit. Good place. This place is a perfect example of a local, neighborhood, bar & grill. Now, I personally don't frequent bars and when the "bar" is the better part of the "bar & grill," I usually don't care to visit. Well, the "grill" or the restaurant is the bigger portion here. In fact, a wall divides the restaurant side from the bar side creating two different environments. In one word: "perfect arrangement." Well... two words, then. Good atmosphere. Inviting. I saw folks that appeared to be from their 20s and others in their 50s. Saw a family with kids, too. There are several tables as well as booths. Good: :: Service. My party of four, on our first visit, was spoken to like old friends. It wasn't over the top or sugary, it was just right. :: Hickory Smoked Beef Brisket BBQ Sandwich. Excellent. Came with pickles & onions on the side. :: Onion rings. Thick-cut with the right amount of breading (not so much breading that it tastes like a doughnut with a lone onion hiding out). Bad: :: My partner said his steak was "not all the great," however, he said that about a lot of food... so don't give this comment a lot of weight. :: The four of us agreed that the "Loaded Nachos" was a strange taste. Maybe not strange... just different than what we were used to. I noticed the menu stated not cheese, but "cheese sauce" in the menu... maybe that was the difference. :: Cole slaw. Now, many will think that it is very, very good and, to a certain degree, it is. I just thought it was extremely too sweet (like double the sweetness of KFC cole slaw). In the end, it was a good visit. Other than the sweet slaw, I loved my sandwich and onion rings very much. Good service. I'd do 3.5 stars if I could. A second visit could easily swing my rating higher. We'll have to wait and see.

Rubbies has daily food specials that offer a home cooked feel. Everything from fried chicken, ribs and even seafood. The regular menu offers a little bit of everything.

A bar and a restaurant in the same building but in different rooms. I've never been in the bar but the restaurant is nice. Good fries and onion rings along with an ok salad. I can't speak to the meaty items on the menu.
