Good location and nice ambience. Service is friendly. Pizza is alright. Let's break down the components. Sauce: too runny but decent flavor. Crust: good and crispy with enough chewiness and flavor. Toppings: good but they almost taste sautéed and not baked; I think the runny sauce may have something to do with that. Overall: Not Boombozz but a good alternative when on the East End.

Popular but probably because of the atmosphere and the fact that it's on campus. Nothing really special if you ask me.

I really like Mellow Mushroom pizza. However this location has some serious kinks to work out. Astronomical wait times for carry out on weekends. Went on a Friday night were told by people leaving took an hour for pizza! That's on top of waiting to be seated forever. They had a lot of empty tables. I think they need to hire more staff to accommodate the new boom in business. We're quoted a wait time of 30 min with kids it's hard to wait that long but 30 min came and went. Asked how much longer and was told that 4 more parties Infront of us :(! That would've been another 45 min!! Seemed to be ran by confused teens :/. Maybe retry at a later date or avoid weekends!!

Pizza can definitely fall in a few categories. There's the thin-crust, artisan style and then the slices-as-big-as-your-head. Also, you have the buttery crust piled high with toppings in various combinations. Mellow Mushroom definitely falls into that third category -- and they're pretty great at it. I've enjoyed several MM locations, and on my most recent trip I tried Philosopher's Pie, which has an olive oil and garlic base, Portobello mushrooms, artichoke hearts, Kalamata olives, Provolone, feta and mozzarella cheeses. Instead of steak, I got it with sausage. I'm normally not a huge fan of big mushrooms, but this combo called to me and hit the spot. I especially liked the garlic and artichoke hearts. And the crust was flavorful -- definitely more than just a base for toppings. The service at this MM location was prompt and polite. Really this was an all-around, good meal -- exactly what I was hoping for.

Very good gluten free pizza. My favorite is the Gourmet White but I also love the Kosmic Karma! They only have medium size for gluten free so it's a little more expensive. Bring a friend to share! :) They also cook the pizzas in special pans for gluten free. Very friendly staff and great atmosphere! (Be sure to avoid the nights they do trivia. It gets loud.)

Good pizza and pretzels. A little slow service considering we were there after the normal lunch hour.

great pizza, great atmosphere. We've been twice. Both on a Sunday afternoon. We Tried to go on a Saturday night. Big mistake. The wait was 45-60min. We were way to hungry to wait that long. On Sunday's, we were seated right away. Order appetizers the same time as the pizza. At least that's what we did and they came, we ate, then the pizza came, we devoured. The holy shiitake has been my favorite!!

Oh Mellow Mushroom... how I love thee. While on vacation in Louisville I saw that a new MM had recently opened in the area. Naturally I took this opportunity to add them to my MM belt (thats actually a really good idea, I need to make an MM belt) Make sure to try some of the local brews. I had a Kentucky Ale which was really good. Followed it up with the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Golden Ale.. Disclaimer: Unless you reeeeeaaallly like bourbon, I would not recommend this one. It had almost too much bourbon punch for me. The food was amazing just like the other MM's but the coolest thing was the horse decor. Being home of the Kentucky Derby, Louisville is known for horses. The MM designers did a GREAT job of incorporating this into the restaurant. My sister who is a horse nut and Louisville resident loved this touch. You've done it again Mellow Mushroom, you're done it again.. a tip of my hat to you.

If I could give zero stars I would. Doesn't matter what's on your menu if your experience is miserable EACH AND EVERY time you give the place a chance. On what plant does it take 35 minutes to get an appetizer of soft pretzels? With no apology or emotion whatsoever out of the wait staff. We honestly have not had a meal last shorter than 1 hr here, their time management is abysmal. The wait staff (no matter who we get) always forgets things, are extremely rude and in general don't care. The good is not worth the frustration. We've given MM far too many chances to redeem themselves, they never do.

The pizza at most Mellow Mushrooms is amazing. Their whole wheat crust and hormone-free chicken wins us over along with the chewy hot goodness. Service is good 90% of the time. This location was a bit different. They were busy so we understand a bit of a wait, but this was far too long. We waited forever for a beer list and then even longer for a small cup of marinara. The pizza was not very hot and the toppings were not spread out at all. Our server seemed busy and we saw little of her. The actual location was busy, but not busy enough to warrant the service/food issues.

Normally, I tend to cut employees in the food service industry a break but after my experience today, its hard to hold my tongue. My girlfriend, brother and I waited nearly 50 min after ordering 2 small pizzas and our waiter never came back to check in on our table for drinks the entire time. For a family restaurant I found it disappointing that the employees took the radio off and put on "Sublime radio" which started off with the some "Two Joints." I found it funny then disturbing as the manager continued to sing every word while he walked throughout the store in front of children and adults alike. Don't get me wrong I'm always up for a good time but this was nor the time or place. Last but not least, the food. My brothers food was hot but my girlfriend and mine was tepid at best. Overall, I will no longer be a customer of Mellow Mushroom.

We had lunch on a Sunday at noon. Hard to believe there were only two servers working at that time. After about 45 minutes we finally got our food and it tasted great, but come on! Put more servers on the floor! The poor girl was stressed and had tables spread throughout the restaurant. It took ten minutes to get our check, then ten more to flag her down to pay.

Some of best pizza I have had. A great crust and super fun toppings available. The wait for our food was really long - about 45 minutes on a Friday night. Thank goodness we were seated right away.... Pizza was really worth the wait and I would certainly go again but maybe opt for takeout next time to save the long wait! Great local ambiance also- if you don't mind waiting eons for your good.

I don't understand all the complaints, maybe We got lucky but or food and service was great. First the service We were barely in our seat and our waitress was getting our dri k order which came back fast even though I had a special request. Our waiter Julia advised us that food was made fresh and would take 25 minutes although it was more like 12 min. She checked on us several times and brought me a refill on my soda just as my first one finished. She was paying attention but was never intrusive. Food First off we've had Mello Mushroom from the original and several other locations. We enjoyed ours as much as any of the others. Pizza was out fast and perfect. Love the chewy crust with just enough crispiness. Everything was prompt including the bill.

I always love coming here since it's right up the street from where I live. The pizza is excellent and I love their pretzels with their beer cheese. However, if you're expecting a quick meal, this is not the place for you. Due to the dough (which is SO yummy) their pizzas can take a half an hour to 40 minutes to make. But, if you have time, so worth it. The service can get a little lack luster at times. But I will say I called ahead for a party of 12 and they had the table ready when I got there. Didn't see our server too much though. My husband and I will for sure be back, the atmosphere, especially for sports, is nice and we usually sit in the bar.

Pizza wasn't bad. My girlfriend really enjoyed it. A little pricey but high quality. Only complaint is the service was incredibly slow. It took about 45 minutes to get our pizza. Staff were nice. Good atmosphere if you have the time.

Another great experience at Mellow Mushroom. We got a small cheese and a veggie pizza. Both were hot and tasty. The veggie has a good mix of fresh veggies (tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, artichokes, Etc) as well as tasty tofu. The cheese was as advertised a good blend of cheeses and plenty of wonderful red sauce. The real show stopper is the crust. Soft chewy with a good crunch. The staff was attentive and pleasant and the host even took the time to good with my kids while we waited. We will definitely be back!

I've eaten here a few times, both carry out and dine in, and weirdly, I've never tried the pizza (people at my table have eaten it and enjoyed it, though.) Everything I have eaten here was delicious. The sandwiches are great, and I adore the salads. They offer so many options, and they're very customizable. I think that they really shine when it comes to appetizers, though! That's my favorite thing to order. As an added bonus, there are many options for special diets, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free (I think they also offer gluten free beer, but I don't drink.) During all my visits, the servers were very kind, funny, and attentive, but the food was a little slow coming out. Personally this place is a little too expensive for me to visit regularly, but they do email coupons sometimes.

  • Ron M.

The food here has been very good on the several visits we have made. The prices are a bit high for a pizza joint, but this is not the typical crappy pie you get at your local PJ or PH. The place is very popular and best visited on a week night if you want good service. I made the mistake of hitting the place on a Friday night and found a 2 hr wait for a table, but, week nights service is very good. Also the music can be a bit too loud at times.

    1) Their Gluten Free Pizza is better than their regular pizza. 2) They do not have enough parking and being new they are always busy. 3) Pizza takes a long time to bake so order an appetizer. 4) Service is better than Old Chicago but pizza is worse. (see my OC Review) 5) Their atmosphere is fun and noisy. This is not my first choice for dining but I am happy there are more restaurants in Jtown.

My first time in, and it was great. I really enjoyed the Funky Q Chicken pizza. Also tried Kosmic Karma (which was decent) and the Magical Mystery Tour (I didnt care for it). Service was outstanding! The server, forgot her name, was very nice and interacted with my party and my friends daughter. The restaurant was exceptionally clean, especially the restrooms. I sat near the restrooms and noticed that an employee would make rounds to all the restrooms (2 mens and 2 womens) like every 10 to 15 minutes to ensure their cleanliness. Really enjoyed my first experience and look forward to my next..

Good pizza and part of a newer, hip pizza chain restaurant. We decided to try this one out after eating at another location previously. While the pizza is good, there are unfortunately better pizzas at better prices nearby. Great variety and love the gluten free pizza option.

I was here a few months back at lunch. I ordered a hoagie to go. I waited at least 45 minutes & everybody there seemed confused all the time. Everything on the menu is way overpriced. I would only recommend going there for drinks. 45 minutes for a hoagie? They weren't even that crowded. Another thing. If you order take out you HAVE to order it at the bar. Not kid friendly for sure. They also put sprouts on everything, so make sure to ask them to not put them on if you don't like them.

I typically love Mellow Mushroom. First time going to this particular location. Waited and waited for someone to stop by the table. (3pm, they weren't that busy) When we finally got someone's attention and asked about service, she was incredibly rude about it.....so we left. Go to the St.Matthews location, I have always had a good experience there.

Great food and fantastic beer selection, but unfortunately the worst service. We waited 40 minutes for the appetizers and it wasn't very crowded. After 1hr and 15 minutes, we were told the pizza still had half an hour left to bake. If this is what it's like on a Tuesday night, Im really thankful we didn't go on a weekend.

Food is good here but be warned don't come here thinking that you will get served quickly. I came here at lunch time and they were not busy at all and waited at least 25 minutes for my sandwich. I asked what was the wait and was told it takes a while. I then made the mistake of ordering a cookie sundae. 10 minutes and still waiting. The jerk chicken sandwich was good asked for a side of avocado which I was told would be $2.50, ok but I got 4 small slices when it finally came out. Wow thought I would have gotten a lil more for $2.50. I heard people talking about how the cookie Sundae was good so we will see if it ever gets here. Good food but very slow service, come prepared to wait and I mean wait.

I've been a long time Mellow Mushroom fan, so I'm glad that they've found their way to Louisville. There are two locations here in Louisville, but the Blankenbaker one is superior to the Shelbyville Rd one, in my opinion. We were quickly sat in the bar area, and our waitress, Mystic, happily ran down the numerous beer options for us, as well as signed us up for their Beer Club rewards program. We had pretzels and beer cheese, which were super yummy, and ordered a 10" Kosmic Karma with ricotta. We definitely left very full and very happy.

Been here 6 times. Food is always delicious and servers always fun and friendly. Beers are cold and food is hot. And there is pizza, what more does one need? Only 4 stars as unless I'm in NY no pizza gets 5 stars!

Didn't change tv to featured game after asking multiple people. No reason given. Brought out all other food before my pizza was put in. Rotten, undercooked potatoes. Disappointing. Pretzels and salad were good. If it hadn't been for the screw up and no real solution provided, I might go back.

The best part of this place is that you can do half of one kind pizza and half of another kind of pizza...on one pizza. It helps you stay within just ordering one pizza. The staff is pretty nice and the pizza is good. They have good crisp crust and their flavor profiles are good. The pretzel app is more like breadsticks...but still tasty. I would recommend this place to people.

This place is my favorite out of the sit-down pizza places in Louisville. I recommend getting one of the specialty pizzas. Also the salads are very fresh and I always get the Esperanza dressing. They have a good draft beer selection too. The prices are a bit expensive and sometimes the service is slow.

  • Courtney L.

We did do carry out which is never 100% the same but I don't even think they attempted the same quality. The honey & cinnamon pretzels were burnt and completely inedible. They weren't even pretzels they were shaped like skinny breadsticks. We got a pizza too, not terrible just mediocre nothing I'll recommend to anyone. In my opinion if they have carryout they should put the same effort in.

  • Jason K.

If you like over priced and OK pizza this is the place to go. I orderd two slices of Pizza and water and my bill was $9.49 for lunch. The crust was burnt on the bottom and taste like I was eatting a cardboad box. Service was not very good and slow. There are a bunch of better Pizza places in town.

Yeah the wait after ordering was a bit long but the owners themselves came and chatted for 20 min with us. Love this place

The food is so delish! Nice atmosphere cool decor but the service is slow. Only come here if u have time to wait and dont go on lunch. lunch is about 2 hours with them. the staff are kids. they reminded me of zombies,, just wandering around talking among themselves as i sat there waiting for them to take my order in which was a long wait within itself. They apologized and told me they would have our orders out immediately. Immediately to them was 20 mins..... again, nice food but the service really sucks. Hire a grown up please to organize the staff of uncaring kids.

Enjoyed our pizzas, but had to wait over 40 minutes after ordering before we got our pizzas. We were told about the wait ahead of time, but it did take longer than she said. My husband had to get up to find our waitress to pay. Service is slow, but the food was good. Not sure if we will return.

My family and I have been a great fan of Mellow Mushrooms and frequent this location often until tonight's experience. We had ten family members in our group, Including children. The first Cheese pizza for the kids, came out BURNT, totally uneatable. WE had to ask for a manager, Shawn, and he put in an order for a new cheese pizza, which was given to another customer. So then, we asked to speak to the owner, Dave Simms. The children by this time was upset for not having food. When the third pizza finally arrived, the owner said he would take the price of the cheese pizza off, but would not discount our check other then the Cheese Pizza. We had to continually ask for refills on drinks. We will probably not be back at this location and will take our business to DiOrio's Pizza in St. Matthews. The owner could have at least offered the children coupons for free kids pizza or a discount or something to compensate for the wait and total mishap that happened tonight, Dave seems to not have the customers at heart. And seemed not to care if we returned or not.

First off, not sure who hired the crew here but this person should go through the management training next time. I have had 2 just ridiculous experiences at this place. The first time my wife and I ate at the restaurant. It took the waitress 15 min to get our drink order, a beer and a glass of wine, a very difficult order. We should have known what we are in for when the waitress suggested we get an appetizer because the pizzas take quite a while, the one correct thing she said all night. Of course the appetizer and pizza came out at the same time, saw that one coming. She continued to forget our drink orders and when she brought something it was wrong. It was a bang your head against the wall experience. So that brings us to experience #2. This time around we knew better so we decided to get takeout, WRONG IDEA! The first time I called I was passed to 4 different people then hung up on. I called back and they said they were having an issue with the phone, I am sure it wasn't user error, right! They let me know it would be 20-30 minutes, it took an hour. When my wife mentioned something to the manager, who was working the evening shift on 9/14, he threw her a couple of free appetizer coupons, what a guy. I remember when you showed awful customer service like that you got your pizza for free. It is too bad they have good pizza because their employees and management are nitwits. I wont be back to use my free appetizer coupons, I would rather grab a frozen Stouffers French bread pizza then have to deal with this circus again. Good luck to the rest of you, I am going to Boombozz!!

I ordered the Gourmet White pizza but was not what I expected; it states that it is "Olive oil and garlic base" but did not taste any garlic in it, perhaps others are better. Overall, the pizza was not so good and a little overpriced. I would perhaps give it another try as it had a nice atmosphere and the waitress gave us a good service.

Solid, typical chain. The pizza was good for a chain. It's not going to blow you away but you know what you are getting. My daughter got a calzone and it was huge and pretty good. Expect to wait after Church on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons they get a large Southeast crowd can always go enjoy a coffee from Heine Brothers.

TERRIBLE.....waited 30 minutes for a table- ok, not bad at all. They lost our order, we waited 2 hours to hear that news. They comped us some appetizer cheese bread- not great and we were hungry. Brought our pizzas out. Other couple's Philosopher's Pie was cold. We ordered the House Special which was not fully cooked--kind of wet on bottom, like it was frozen dough & they didn't give it time to thaw. I know that sometimes orders get lost, but the fact is the pizza was not even good. Will not go back !

I was actually pleasantly surprised after reading some other reviewers posts. We arrived here about 5:30PM or so. It was pretty busy, people were waiting. Luckily, my MIL and FIL got there before my husband, son, and I. They were able to get a table. However, we knew we'd need a booth as we were both using gift certs that expire the next day. So, we would each be ordering a large each. The tables are tiny for a party of 5. We requested a move to a nearby booth and they were very willing to work with that. Our server was great. He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was super friendly, knew the food and drink menu very well. He made sure to check in on us frequently to see if we needed anything. He was good. Appetizers: My husband and I got the spinach and artichoke dip with the bread. DELICIOUS! My favorite thing. I could seriously sit there and eat a whole order myself. I would probably go on to say the best spinach and artichoke dip I've ever eaten. MIL and FIL got the meatball trio appetizer. Eh, they were ok, but that is coming from someone who really doesn't like meatballs that much. Everyone else said they were good. Pizza: Hubby and I got the buffalo chicken pizza. I'll start with the crust. Very good, love the crispiness. It seemed to have a lot of good flavor in that tiny crust, but I am a crust lover. The pizza as whole was good, but nothing special to brag about. Although, this is my first buffalo chicken pizza ever. I love buffalo chicken so figured it would be good. It was, but again not that great. I really think if there were more buffalo sauce and the chicken was shredded it would be a near perfect pizza. Would I go back again? Probably. I would go out of my way to go as I live in IN, but if I was over here already I would go again. All and all a pretty good experience.

Bummed about our lackluster visit. We invited my parents, brothers and sister-in-law to join my family of four. It was their first experience at any Mellow Mushrooms. On the plus side my husband and called ahead and a table for 10 was waiting for us, but the rest of the evening was disappointing. First, a couple of us wanted to split ingredients on our pizza (half pepperoni, half beef) but the server told us we would be charged for (2) full size ingredients. We questioned if she was correct but rather than pay a huge upcharge for ingredients, we changed our orders. Second, our pretzels came out almost 30 minutes after ordering instead of 15 minutes. When my husband questioned our server, she responded with "oh, the kitchen made a mistake." No other explanation. The pizza was okay - big slices but nothing to write home about. I think after waiting an hour to get our complete meal, we were just ready to eat a bit and go home. I felt embarrassed for suggesting to have dinner here. While the food was decent, it couldn't overcome the disappointing service or acknowledgement of slow food and order mistakes. Super frustrating when you have a full view of the kitchen and see plenty of servers standing around chatting.

Vibe is pretty Mellow so don't go on your lunch hour. I had never attended a Mellow Mushroom before and wanted to check this place out from all the recommendations. Our table was sat and we informed the server that we were here on our lunch hour so we would need to leave in a timely fashion. The server let us know that pizzas take about 25-30 minutes to prepare, calzones can take almost 20 minutes and that if the restaurant is busy tables could wait almost an hour for their pizza creation! I understand that pizza is made from scratch, but waiting an hour when I already showed up hungry seems a bit for a custom pizza. Our table ordered two open face veggie sandwiches and a pepperoni calzone. I loved the fresh and different vegetable options like sun dried tomatoes and artichokes, however in Louisville we already have a lot of pizza joints that offer these options. Although I enjoyed the atmosphere, service, and great tasting food I probably will not be back to Mellow Mushroom anytime soon. I think that this pizza parlor found the right neighborhood of customers, but I already have multiple pizza joints that offer the same concept and our closer to my area.

Had to check out the hype and went with a group. Place was packed but we apparently got there early enough to not be a problem. One server for our group and she was awesome. On top of it with drinks and refills and answered questions without any feeling of rush. Don't really know how she did it. Food is a little pricey for portions but the quality is definitely there. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back. (p.s. ran into some friends who didn't get there quite as early as us and they did, in fact, have a very long wait to be seated on a Friday night). Oh, and although not a factor in my review, parking is very sparse.
