I was very disappointed with the food, my brother who is blind and has high blood pressure wanted to know what he could eat with low sodium, he settled on a chicken sandwich, and asked to have it on a pita bread, he had a piece of grilled chicken, half the size of the palm of his hand, not worth the money. I had the gyro with fries: sad to say it was disappointing as well, cold meat, and burnt hard, greasy fries. The lady at the register seemed nice, but the guy on the grill had an attitude for some reason!!!! I strongly urge you not to patronize this establishment

Lonnie's is becoming my Friday ritual lately! This is my second time there for lunch this month. I like that regulars are there for the Friday catfish special. Working men, retirees, soccer moms, office suits alike stop in for a cold beverage and daily dog specials for lunch. The tunes playing are always soulful, today the grill was jamming to the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. (I had forgotten how good that album sounds). I usually rotate between the Wabash Chili Dog, Rush Street Chili Dog or Clark St. Dog but today I tried the Greek Gyro. It was good, reminded me of the ones I ate in Wrigley area when I lived in Chicago. Soft pita, crisp edges of lamb strips from the grill, fresh onions, tomato and just the right amount of tzatziki. When nostalgic for Chicago lunch joints this is the place I go. Next time I might try the fried catfish special or check out their Soul Food Wednesday.

Came for the Chicago style hot dogs. Tasty but a bit small and it was the jumbo Clark dog. Nice relaxed and casual place.

Lonnie and his family are some of the nicest people. They seem truly happy to have you in their restaurant. They're not hard to did, though the spot is small and tables are limited. That seems to be the way it is when your little joint is fantastic. The cashier (a regular told me she's Lonnie's wife, but I didn't confirm) is so friendly, and is pleasant about asking you if you want your sandwich dipped or hot peppers. The answer to whether or not you want your sandwich dipped should always, always be yes. The cheese fries are super good. I don't love the sausage, but try it yourself, you might like it! If you want something cheap, fast, and that reminds you of Chicago, this is the perfect place to stop in for lunch! They have specials on the weekdays. Check out their website to see what's cooking!

Step into Lonnie's and you'll feel as if you were somehow transported to a cramp and busy New York/Chicago diner, the kind of place where only the locals know of and its delicious goodness is your secret alone. You order at the counter and they make it right there where you can see it behind the bar. There are 6 types of hotdogs and Italian beef, sausages, burgers, gyros, and other special items (poboys, chicken, etc.) to choose from. I love that Clark Street Chicago hot dog has large pieces of tomatoes, cucumber, peppers an relish. Pair that with gooey melted cheese and chili on top of freshly made fries and your crappy day will magically be better. The best part, the hot dog is only $3.59 and the fries only $2.49. I heard there's good soul food on Wednesday, which goes really quick. This place is a must try if you're in the neighborhood and looking for something cheap and satisfying.

Great little "Chicago Style" restaurant. Use to come here tons with my ex. Probably best hot dogs in Louisville. Their Gyros are excellent. Great fries. Don't come here if you are a health nut. Good customer service. My only knock is it seems the wait for food always takes forever.

Love this place! If you are craving genuine Chicago food this is the place. Hot dogs and Gyros are my top choices. Lonnie and his family will take good care of you. They use Vienna beef so this is real deal Chicago.

I was fortunate to live in Chicago for four years while I was in college. Since moving to Louisville many years ago there have been several places touting Chicago style food. They were all disappointments until Lonnie's came along. Lonnie's is legit, serving up Vienna Beef products combined with some good home cooking. The Chicago Dogs, Wabash Chili Dogs, and Italian Beef Sandwiches are great. They have about the best french fries in town. They also serve Italian Sausage, gyros, burgers, wings and more. The owners, Lonnie and Diane, are wonderful, friendly hosts. It is always a pleasure to see them. A simple place offering Chicago food in Louisville. Now if we could only get some real Chicago Deep Dish Pizza here!

If you know and love Chicago-style dogs and traditional Italian beef, then you'll love Lonnie's. If you're a Chicago native, it will give you a little look and feel from home too. Lonnie and his family are awesome and they always have some good jams playing too :)

Didn't know you could burn a hot dog until here. Strike one. Soggy bun for my italian beef, strike two. I ask for plane hot dog, and it has celery salt on it? Strike three.... I'm out.

I've been going to Lonnie's for many years and have never left disappointed. The food is great, authentic Chicago style food. The chili dogs are amazing. Real Vienna beef hot dogs with homemade chilli, onions, mustard...wow. The Chicago dogs are of course excellent as well. My personal favorite is the Italian beef sandwich. The best I've had, and I've been to Chicago many times. They also serve burgers, gyros, and soul food on Wednesdays. This is a great mom and pop joint, and Lonnie and Diane are such nice people. The service is always excellent. The perfect place to experience the Windy City in the Derby City.

I stopped in to get a chili cheese dog and fries.I had to wait a little longer than I thought I should. It was quite small. Did not care for the hot dog itself and just was not much chili. I didnt like the cheese sauce either because it tasted sweet. The french fries were hot. However, they were not salted so I was trying to find a packet of salt in my car. Still looking for a great chilli dog in Louisville. This was not it. Dairy Castle a pretty good one but closed for winter:(

If you want a legit taste of Chicago, Lonnie's is the place! From a traditional Chicago dog to an Italian beef to a hamburger, even their gyros are awesome! You really can't go wrong with their made to order menu lineup! Don't let the outside of the building fool you or the inside for that matter (it's a tiny little place) and parking can be difficult....you have been warned!

The food was good. Had an Italian beef sandwich and a cheese fry. Everything is fresh and made to order. They use Vienna beef hot dogs and sausages. Only down side is, there's not much room to sit down if they're crowded. Only 8 or 9 small tables for two and some bar stools at the counter. That's not a problem though if your getting it to go. Would definately come back!

A good hot dog place is really all about the buns. Hush. Not that kind of buns. The hot dog to bun ratio is incredibly important. I don't care how good the bread is, it's still just the functional holder for the yumminess inside. Not only does Lonnie's have huge sausages and hot dogs and tons of toppings (my chilli cheese dog was incredible) but they are proportionally a good part of the meal. Hush. Not that kind of sausages. You get that authentic Chicago street fare vibe from the place, the food is simple and great, and the prices are reasonable. I can't believe I didn't try Lonnie's sooner and will be back soon. Go there, eat good food, and get your mind out of the gutter. ;-)

I went to Chicago for the curren$y concert in I was only there for 2 days but I ate 10 Chicago style hot dogs. Since I got back to Louisville everyone in Lonnie's knows my face! Their Chicago dogs are great and I can't stop eating them but at least now now I can find one in my city. My wife had the chicken wings and fries basket and she said it was phenomenal, wings were full of flavor and seasoned. Wished they stayed open later on weekends, only downfall of this restaurant.

FANTASTIC!!! This is my favorite hot dog joint in all of Kentucky. Close your eyes and point at the menu. Order whatever your finger is pointing at. It's that good. The Itallian beef is great with hot peppers, just the right amount of kick and a great pepper blend. The Clark Street (Chicago) Dog is...well...it's a friggin Chicago Dog! Just eat it and love it because they're all the same everywhere...awesome! The chili dog is incredible. The chili is so good it makes me angry. They have the absolute perfect blend of spices and sweetness. I'm not even going to get into how friendly they are. The worst part about eating at this place is when your plate is empty. I always look forward to going back.

Best hot dogs in Lousiville area but the sleeper may be the 3" Baby Italian Beef w/ peppers & au jus. Lonnie & his wife are the owners & both from Chicago. They run the place...so it is consistent & they take pride in giving you the best!

Lonnie's is a tiny little place in St. Matthew's. I go for the hot dogs and I'm never disappointed. The dogs are done perfectly and topped in a 1001 different ways. If you order the Chicago style dog it comes with fries. The people who run the place are super nice and the service is quick and pleasant. Lonnie's a a very small place with great food run by wonderfully nice people It doesn't get much better than that.

Lonnie's is one of my favorite places to get an Italian beef sandwich (extra wet, hot giardiniera, provolone), it's fantastic! The hot dogs are equally delicious and the service has always been wonderful. My boyfriend and I were in Lonnie's this past weekend and ordered 2 Italian beef sandwiches, a Clark Street, cheese fries, and a pizza puff! Eyes bigger than our stomachs? Nope! We ate every last bite with no regrets. If you're in the St. Matthews area check it out, you won't be disappointed!

A few people had told me they had not only the best hot dog, but also the best burger in town so of course I had to try it. First impression from the outside, I was not very impressed, very unassuming building.( Oh quick parking tip, make sure to back in, backing out onto the street is nearly impossible certain parts of the day) Inside, it feels like a very classic diner. Several stools at the counter and about 8 tables, nothing fancy just the basics. I got the quarter pounder with cheese, cheese fries and potato salad. I had to try the potato salad, as I think it says a lot about a restaurant on it's own. It seemed like a small portion, but the flavor was pretty good. No surprises so far, now on to the burger and fries. One thing that stuck out to me was the seemingly fresh bun. Not sure if they get it locally or if it is store bought, but just picking up my burger my expectations got even higher. Fresh ingredients make the burger,it was a classic diner burger done just right. The only thing I was I had done differently was get a half pounder instead of the quarter. Burger flavor didn't really standout, not sure how it could with all the flavors of the fresh ingredients. Cheese fries were good as well, not anything special, but still very good. I finished everything I ordered and left very satisfied. Now I know burgers are not the main draw here, but we have some pretty good burgers in town and they can hold their own here. Next time I will do the bigger burger and see if that is what was missing. Definitely want to try the hotdog next time, but for now it's just ok for me as the food was good diner quality.

You know what? I'm not going to even waste your time reading my usually long-winded prose. GO! Get a Chicago dog, a gyro or whatever Lonnie is serving. Sit down and eat it in this perfect little out-of-place diner. Listen to whatever great Motown album happens to be playing and just enjoy the moment. It doesn't get much simpler or much better.

Awesome just awesome!!!! Pizza puffs were the same has in Chicago, the hotdogs are Vienna and the beef was perfect :) but the gyro was not Kronos it was the flat strip meat it was good but not what I was looking for all and all I will definitely be back!!!!

I enjoyed Lonnie's... I had a Italian combo sandwich, which was great! it was hot, the sausage wasn't dry, the beef was delicious and the dining room was clean. Overall it was a good fast food experience.

Great Place! Owners are Awesome People! and the Italian beef and sausage combo with peppers... The best I have had. Make sure and check their hours though, once you eat here you will be craving Lonnie's and realize they are only open till 7!

3 1/2 stars. The hot dog was ok. The special sauce on the po boy was awesome (just a little bit of a kick). The staff/service was excellent--friendly and casual. If you live close and are craving a hot dog, then this is a good stop in place. If you live farther out, I'm not so sure the drive would be worth it.

They get this 1 star for one reason....They did not want us in there store. Not sure if we got there right before they were going to close or what...But very rude!!! We did not even stay to eat!!! Maybe the food is good, but if you walk in shortly before they close with a child, expect to get the "EVIL EYE"! No Thank You!

Outstanding catfish platter and sweet tea! You really have to try it. They also have a dessert cake that is really good as well. The owners are a husband and wife team and they treat everyone with outstanding customer service!

How is it that I've lived in St. Matthews almost ten years and had never stopped by Lonnie's? What's even crazier is that I've past it so many times on the way to Westport Road. On Oaks, my sandZ (sorority sister) and I decided to try it and we absolutely loved IT. She ordered the fried catfish special and I tasted it and it's some of the best fried catfish I've ever tasted. The fish is fried fresh to order; they must have it swimming in one of those blue plastic pools out back. Oh, I ordered the Gyro and it was good as well. Also, with my sandZ food, she had some type of homemade hot sauce that was ON Point. Turned on of my co-workers onto this place and now we've been back about three times. Can't wait to go back and try something new. So glad I finally gave it a try it out before I left Louisville.

You can really tell when an owner cares about their product. Lonnie runs and owns this place and is proud of the food he offers and he keeps his place clean. He will let you try his chili and beef on your first visit and the product sells itself. The burger I had made me think of that corner burger place that you had when you were growing up as a young kid. It was made to order and was delicious! Unfortunately I only found this place as I am about to. Leave the Louisville area, so don't make the same mistake I did and miss out on Lonnie's. It is very worth it! The one criticism I would give would be to improve the fries. Other than that, I was very impressed by having the same quality product that I had in Chicago a few years ago.

Every time I come to St. Matthews, KY I make sure that I visit Lonnie's. I love their Maxwell's on Tuesdays. They have a special on them that day. I also get their chili dogs. The chili is not like Texas chili but its pretty good. Great place to have lunch! Speedy service and very kind owners. It's great to see them every time I visit.

1st and only 5 star rating. This place is better than Portillos in Chicago. Food is priced fair, service is fast, people are friendly, place is small but clean. But I have to say even if all that were lacking-I'd still eat there! The food is awesome. My fav is Italian beef and sausage combo (dipped w/ peppers) Gyros are a close second (the misses fav) Good dogs and fries. Even the kids plate ChiX nuggets are good ($2.50 w/ fries & drink) I look forward to trying there other specialties- I'm addicted!

I will start by saying that I LOVE hot dogs. This being said I was very excited to try Lonnies. I've been in twice now and I've tried two different hot dogs off of their menu. My first visit I tried the classic Chicago style dog with a side order of chili cheese fries (another favorite of mine). The hot dog was very good but the toppings overall were a little sweet which I wasn't expecting. The bun was not to thick and not too thin and was nicely steamed. The dog itself was tasty as well. The chili cheese fries were just ok. The chili was a little sweet for my taste also. Sweet is not something I look for in chili. On my next visit I had the sauerkraut topped dog (trying to avoid anything too sweet) and to my surprise the kraut was sweet also. I've never had sweet sauerkraut before and I have to say I don't prefer it to the classic version. I don't know if all this sweetness is a Chicago thing or not but it's not my typical preference. That being said the hot dogs themselves are good enough to warrant the 4 stars I gave and I will certainly be bak to try some of the other dog selections.

love, love, love Lonnie's. LOVE IT. I get the Wabash chili dog. It's just a dog- with chili! WHY DOES IT TASTE SO GOOD? This place is inexpensive, the staff are courteous, and the food seems to come up quick. Enjoy Lonnie's laid back atmosphere.

Good food, with a good Chicago taste and feel! The gyro lamb meat wasn't fresh cut but still very good! The Italian beef was good and their mild sauce a.k.a BBQ sauce was very good, it taste exactly like mild sauce u would find at most Chicago good eateries!

I lived in Chicago for a year and could not get enough of the style of food. Especially the Italian Beef and Chicago Dogs. Lonnies Italian Beef sandwich is as good or better than what I had in Chicago. Lonnie's is a small little place with about 10 tables and some counter seating. Don't let the appearance or size fool you, this place is great. The italian beef and the Clark Street dog are a must try, but the rest of the menu is great as well. They even have soul food lunches on select days during the week. Don't miss out on this place!!
