Lolita's Tacos is a hidden gem in some respects. Great Mexican food, delicious refried beans and rice. I first ordered the cheese enchiladas and maybe 5 seconds later changed it to chicken enchiladas, guess what I got...cheese enchiladas. I didn't care enough to complain but it wasn't busy and there was no line so I'm not sure why that order seemed complicated. Large portions though. In fact, I couldn't finish my meal. Definitely sketched out by food with hot oil served on styrofoam plates as I don't really want to eat the poisonous chemicals that surely leech out when melted. Also super offended by the t-shirt that says something to the effect of "I Ate Lolita's Taco."

I gave them one star because Yelp forced me to. I just ate the worst carne asada taco in the world. I trusted the Yelp community on this one, traveling from my hotel to check out the supposed 'California-style' tacos - thanks guys...no bueno! Let's talk about the fact that the taco meat is MICROWAVED. It was absolutely not fresh, like advertised. I heard other orders that were placed after me being nuked as well, in particular the enchiladas. The meat is coated in black pepper and the taco meat includes large chunks of onion and green pepper (what?!) - so not what a real Mexican taco looks like. There was no white queso, no cilantro, no avocado on the side... I feel I may need to school these folks on proper authentic carne asada construction. Their salsa was a ketchup-like consistency mixed with chingos of chili powder. Ugh. When I left this dump I called my (Mexican!) husband and told him I was seriously thinking about throwing up and starting over elsewhere. Take the overpriced $2.50 you'll pay per taco and go to Taco Bell. You'll get better, more authentic tacos from their drive up.

Great flavors! I got the beef burrito and my girl got the avocado. Prices at the front are good, but extras cost more than expected. Ingredients in both were very fresh, making for a great, slimeless burrito. We both did enchilada style on the burrito which made them absolutely delicious. Will do again, happy to find Ms. Lolita. As far as atmosphere, picture four diner tables in a small lobby, most seating is outside on picnic tables. (Not great for our late, rainy night date)

To respectfully correct a previous review, there are actually authentically prepared items, especially the carnitas taco....which is every bit as good as the excellent tacos I had in Guanajuato and LA. (There is much in common with LA style and authentic Mexican street tacos.) The avocado burrito is the bomb and the tostada is very good. Take a jar of the hot sauce to go.....good flavor and medium heat.

This place is dirty, cramped and everything is served on styrofoam. And then there's the food. Which is bland microwaved garbage. To call this authentic is an insult to the people of Mexico. We used a Groupon so my only consolation is that we did not pay full price. Go to Santa Fe, El Mundo, Taqueria Mexicana or even El Nopal. Hell, go to Taco Bell.

The avocado burrito was fantastic! The cheese enchiladas were mild but very good. Guac was smooth not very chunky. We were passing through town and this was near our hotel. Very LA! Not a fancy place. Food is served on paper plates but the place is clean and service was great.

They were the worst chicken tacos I've ever had. The chicken tasted like it was frozen or from a can not fresh. On top of that the cost for the food was way over priced.

Ordered the avocado burrito enchilada style as carryout for lunch today. Took only 10 minutes from the time I called to go pick it up and it was ready for me. It had been 2 years since I last tried it, but it is still very yummy. Fresh, hot and huge! Still plenty leftover for a second meal. No complaints.

I bought a Groupon to Lolita's and tried it for the first time. It was really good! I got the avocado burrito, enchilada style. Great choice. It is HUGE and probably has at least 2 or 3 avocados, pico de gallo and cilantro. It was enough to have leftovers for lunch with the rice and beans. My boyfriend got the carne asada burrito, which he compared to a mexican philly cheese steak. It was all meat, with green peppers and onions. He said he would have preferred a little bit of something else in there, like pico or lettuce to offset the meatiness, but was otherwise pleased with it. The seating area is a little bit small, but the tables are fun to read with old advertisements from the 1800's printed on. I think next time I will get to-go.

Best authentic Mexican food I've found in Louisville! (Yes, El Mundo is delicious, but it is not authentic Mexican...) This joint is worth your time if you are craving Mexican food. Caution - they are closed on Sundays year round, and closed Saturdays September through May. Both the carnitas and carne asada tacos are tender and delicious, and come rolled in two soft corn tortillas the way that they should be. The menu is not extensive - a few tacos, a few burritos, taquitos, enchilades, tamales, nachos, quesadilla, as well as some American tastes like hot dogs and french fries. The rice and beans were both pretty tasty, though I was disappointed to see they charge $2.25 each for a serving. They are worth it, though, as they are a nice contrast in flavor and texture. Juan's hot sauce is DELICIOUS. Truly. Fortunatley, I saw that he sells it by the jar - I'd love to have some of this in my fridge! It's true, the decor is not much to speak of, with cramped, limited tables (they do have lots of outdoor seating at picnic tables if the weather is nice). But, most California Mexican restaurants have a similar vibe, so I felt right at home! This is certainly going to be a staple in my lunch/dinner rotation!

This place has charm, ambiance, amazing food, and a friendly owner. It's a quaint hole in the wall...smelling of deliciousness the moment you walk in. I will never eat Mexican anywhere else when visiting Louisville!

Agree with many here that the food quality is puzzlingly average. Fresh is not a word I would use for the product. I would characterize it as a restaurant where you get an immense amount of volume of food. If that's what you're looking for without having bad food then this is the place. However, I cannot fail to think that this charming location would be a great place to use thoughtful food preparation and top-notch local ingredients.

This is the worst restaurant I think I have ever eaten at, Mexican or otherwise. I took one bite out of my taco, one bite out of my rice, and threw everything away. Authentic?! Not even close. If you want real Mexican hit up Preston Highway somewhere there are some great spots. If you want to waste your money on low quality beef and grocery store flour tortillas go to Lolitas. I seriously couldn't eat another bite. Taco Bell is like gourmet compared to Lolitas.

I heard good things from several people so I made it a point next time I was in the area to try it out. I have to say I was less than impressed. Maybe they get good reviews from loyal customers in the area, but I could not see why it got such good reviews. I could care less how a place looks, I actually liked that it was not a cookie cutter Mexican place. I was hoping to find a go to Mexican place not everyone knows about, unfortunately I doubt I would go back. It was not bad, but only average at best. Beef reminded me of Taco Bell, but slightly better flavor. Burrito was huge, but it lacked flavor and basically fell apart when I tried to pick it up. I give them 2 stars because the hot sauce was actually really good, if the meat had as much flavor as the hot sauce they may be on to something. Maybe it is a favorite of locals because they have limited choices, but having tried a lot of Mexican places in several cities it was no where near the top of my list.

I had the soft chicken tacos and they were very good. Everything tasted fresh and the salsa was tasty. Service was very good and friendly. The place is pretty small but quaint, Over all very good experience.

LA style? More like Juan style! Found this spot thanks to Yelp while on a trip to Louisville for the 10th annual Lebowski Fest. So good had to make a second visit the next day (thinking about ditching work right now for a 2 hour drive to Lolita's right now). The tamales are amazing and huge! Carne asada and the carnitas tacos are delicious. Domestic beers for $1.85 vs a large soda for $1.75?! No brainer there even if it is 1 in the afternoon. The tamale burrito has to be a Juan original. A perfectly good tamale is placed gingerly on a flour tortilla then refried beans and shredded cheese are nestled in. All rolled up and served to you with some warm tortilla chips. Heaven. The food is phenomenal and made when you order. No chewy heat lamp taquito for you my friend. You say, "Rachael I am sold on Lolita's, let's hit the road." Wait there is more. Nathan's hot dogs and Choco Tacos. I don't really understand why you would order a Nathan's corn dog when you have home made salsa, hot chips, giant tamales, and enormous burritos to choose from, but the option is there. Next visit (there will be a next time) churro chips!

I love Mexican food!! And this place is a nice departure from the same old Mexican food found around Louisville. It is very small and has very few seats but it as just as good to go. I love the beef that they use in the burritos, great flavor. They call it LA style Mexican food and it definitely is Americanized. That does not hurt the taste. They make their own hot sauce as well and it is great. A couple simple American items for the kids too. Nice change especially if want something quick to carry out

I agree 200% with Kevin O. This is the worse restaurant I have ever eaten at. My family took one bit out of their burritos and tacos and we threw everything away. We could not eat more. Sorry :(

OK. First the good, you get a lot of OK Mexican food for under $6 per person. Now the rest. You probably will get bored with the monotonous taste long before you are finished. Be prepared for an ocean of styrofoam plates, cups and plastic utensils. After a while, all of the food looks and tastes the same with little variance. For a treat explore the outhouse style bathrooms. One and done.

My favorite Mexican restaurant in town. I've had the carnitas, burritos, and nachos and not once was I disappointed. The prices are very cheap as well.

You can get a carnita for under $3. Its delicious, with fresh ingredients. I love cilantro, and they were generous with it! Seating is limited inside, and they have a few benches outside. My zagat food:26 Decor:12 Service:16 Price:I

This was terrible! Ground beef was not real and dry. Carne asada beef was also very dry and bland. Never will I go here again nor recommend anyone to waste money here.

The shop bills itself as "L.A. Style" and I think that's fairly accurate: Los Angeles is a great place to get Mexican food but at the end of the day, it's in the States. The menu here isn't what I normally look for in a taco shop. They serve ground beef, which generally conjures images of Taco Bell in my mind, and there are no aguas frescas to wash down your tacos. No, this isn't the most authentic place in town but it's good Mexican fast food, and we could use more places like it. I'm hovering between three and four stars here but I'm giving them four because my order wasn't my usual so I'll take the blame for any disappointment. The boyfriend bought the Groupon good for two combination plates. The taco choices for combo plates were limited and, while the burritos were tempting, I knew I would not be able to finish a burrito AND rice and beans. So I went for taquitos, which I generally reserve for moments of intoxication. They came smothered in a lovely avocado sauce. Matt's ground beef enchiladas arrived somewhere beneath a pile of cheese (and really, who can complain about that?). The ground beef was heavily seasoned with black pepper, which I like. The portions of rice and beans were so great that we *both* brought some home. And the flavor of those rice and beans? Solid. The beans, like the ground beef, were peppery. The rice was veggie free. As for beverages, they serve Pepsi products and cheap bottles of macro brew ($1.85 for domestic or $2.75 for import, the options for the latter consisting solely of Corona). There are no table salsas, no bottles of Cholula or Tapatio stationed at each booth. But if you ask they'll give you a decent house red sauce that's just spicy enough for my taste. And the southern Californian in me appreciates that their burritos are lettuce free.

The hard shell taco ($1.95) was a step above typical fast food. The meat was pure seasoned ground beef, not ground beef mixed with beans and textured soy protein like you would get at a lesser establishment. It came with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheese. The carne asada taco ($2.75) came with beef, onions, and bell peppers inside two corn tortillas. While it wasn't terrible, it wasn't expecting. The meat tasted like boiled stew meat, and the onions and bell peppers were soft as if they were boiled as well. The hot sauce provided separately was fantastic--it tasted like it was made from scratch with fresh ingredients, with just the right amount of heat.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
