Oh, thinkin' about all my younger years, when it was really only me and I was young and wild and free, Impellizzeri's was Louisville pizza heaven.* This was the late '80s, and Impellizzeri's was located on Bardstown Road and still operated as a butcher shop in the mornings. You still had the meat freezers and meat cases, and the seating was limited to a few tables but, oh, the pizza was soooo good. Overflowing with toppings and generally so filling you could only manage a slice before having it boxed up for take home. That was Louisville pizza to me, far more so than John Schnatter's good, cheap but simple delivery/take-out version located not far off UofL's campus. I would take that memory of Impellizzeri's with me to whatever pizza joint I happened to pass through. Impellizzeri's was the best. Twenty-five years later and we've all gone through some changes. Louisville has its fair share of pizza places now, all with their distinctive styles, and Impellizzeri's is no longer that little pizza place off Bardstown Road. After disappearing for some time, and then reappearing with the surge in unique restaurants in the Ville, Impellizzeri's now has 3 locations, all in high traffic, trendy areas. But it's not the same. Not what I remember. Each location is nice, this one along Whiskey Row is large and stylish, but the food is not quite the same. A worthy effort I think but not the best pizza I've ever had. That was sometime in my youth. Alas, I guess you can't go back again. Sigh. *Apologies to Bryan Adams and the lyrics I mangled.

We went here to carbo-load before a night out at 4th street live for my bachelorette party! It was a great idea. The pizza was hot, and tasty. not the best I've ever had but it served it's purpose and the place worked well for a group of 12 gals dressed like Madonna or Cindy Lauper circa 1986.

Good marinara sauce. Philly cheese pizza was OK. Bread sticks big and filing. Stuffed mushrooms had good flavor but too salty.

If Bryan is your waiter, get up and leave. Didn't check on us once and lied about menu after check arrived. First time and last time here. What a waste of money on some average pizza and the worst service I've ever had.

Dinner was great. Our waiter was friendly and took care of us. We were checked on multiple times and given many drink refills. The pizza was awesome. The ingredients tasted fresh and the crust was delicious. This is definitely a place we'll visit again.

This pizza here is very good. You get huge portions for a relatively low price. The food takes a while but it is worth the wait. The staff was nice but kept interrupting our conversation by talking loudly asking if we needed anything. I hope next time he will allow for a person to finish thier sentence before interrupting. Other than a small hiccup this place is great. Stop in for some great pizza.

I ordered the manicotti which came with bread sticks. Both were great! The pasta was super hot, right out of the oven. My co workers ordered a pizza and sub, both guy were not impressed. Said it was "OK." The service as HORRIBLE! We were seated near the back, even though there was plenty of room in the front dining room. Our server rushed us thru ordering, seemed confused with our questions regarding the menu, and would walk away before we were finished asking him a question. Rude. He asked "what? What?" Damn near after everything we said. My bill was $10.59 I gave $11 cash expecting change. I never got 41¢ back, which isn't a big deal, but I thought that was rude and poor ettiqute on the servers part. Thanks for taking my money, there went your tip buddy!! Hope it was with taking that 41¢

This was the only joint we could get a table at right away after a basketball game, so we sat. Breadsticks were good, soggy toward the end though, with a sub par marinara on the side. Ordered a small pizza, since it was just two of us and we already ate the sticks, and it was alright. Original crust was crispy, toppings were fine, not enough sauce for us though. Overall I can't complain. Decent pizza in a high traffic neighborhood, able to get a table at peak times. One thing I will say about the table: I didn't realize how far back the restaurant went, and we ended up sitting in a room across from the ovens. Needless to say it was quite toasty and I was almost uncomfortably warm. Had to drink quite a bit of ice water to stay calm. I would go back, but I'd also investigate other options first.

Delicious 4-cheese pizza and pleasant albeit not overly attentive service. I will go back again if I get the chance.

Friend and I had some time to kill before a concert at the Yum! Center (came from out of town) and we decided to grab a few beers at Impellizzeri's because it's the first place we came across and they had an empty bar and lots of TVs. Five hours, a barrage of craft beers and an order of the best cheese breadsticks later, we hadn't moved from our barstools and the place was completely packed. Definitely a good pre-Yum spot if you're in town for a game/concert.

We had the cheese bread appetizer which was great. The lunch special is good. We had the spaghetti and meatballs, Greek salad, pizza by the slice which were all good. The salads are big and fresh. The sausage is ground as a topping and the pizza sauce sweet which not everyone preferred. 14" was plenty for 3 people. The chopped salad was good and their Caesar is creamy and well dressed.

I went while visiting Louisville with a co-worker one night after work. I grew up in Louisville and had experienced the awesomeness of the original Impellizzeri's on Bardstown Road when it was basically just a bright lit storefront, and I really looked forward to trying it out again. I was surprised to see the nice new location on Main Street. The atmosphere was warm and woodsy, with a big stage but no performers that night. However it was pretty loud in there with other office folks cutting loose at a nearby table. I hate to say but our waiter was pretty rude. Any question we asked was met with sarcasm. Question: "How big is the Chopped Salad?" Answer... "As big as the Ceasar Salad." Naturally we were asking in case it was served family style for the 2 of us ladies to share. There were a few episodes like that with him, and we were both put off and felt a bit offended. Why do that to your customers? It must be tough for some folks to be friendly and hospitable. After getting through the pain of dealing with our snippy waiter, her Chopped Salad and my Garden Salad came fresh and tasty. Then the Sampler Pizza was served and we had no problem putting down a few slices. However, it wasn't nearly as thick and heavy as I remember them to be. For a Small, 9 Topping Pizza and $30.00, I expected that rich, thick, dream pizza I used to get, but it wasn't a whole lot better than your average pizza. I'm glad to see them doing so well, but it seems to have come at the cost of quality and small business friendliness.

Great place to get pick up a nice pizza and beer with some friends. We found it by accident while visiting on business. Fun place with plenty of televisions and wide open floor plan. We will definitely be back.

The food was not bad, but not what I expected from a restaurant that advertises itself as a winner of 6 Best of Louisville awards. The amount of lasagna I received for $9 was less than what's in a $.99 cheeseburger. The chicken Parmesan hoagie my daughter ordered was premade, using chicken that had the taste and texture of high school cafeteria chicken patties. Overall, less than impressive.

This was the worst pizza I've ever had. It was worse than store bought frozen pizza. Not sure how this place calls itself a pizza restaurant.

I went for lunch with 2 friends on 2/23. We, like another reviewer, were seated at the very end of the hallway, despite a mostly empty main dining area. I suspect they do this because it's closer to the kitchen, and less walking for the servers. I was happy to be going there because I've heard good things from others. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The pizza is very expensive, and too much for one person to have for lunch. I got a stromboli and side salad. The salad was good, but the stromboli was pretty forgettable. They also only have pint glasses of beer. I paid about $18 before tip for a strom, side salad, and pint of beer, for a casual weekday lunch. My opinion is, Impellizzeri's is the place to go if money is no object - and neither is value or great food. I won't be back.

I give it a C+. Not the best by any means, but had a decent deep dish. The wings and breadsticks are ok as well. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again for sure.

When I moved to Louisville, I was surprised at the number of independent pizzerias. Each seemed to have its own cult following, but the one I heard about most was Impellizzeri's. The day there was a LivingSocial deal, there were many excited people around the office clicking "Buy Now!" I figured this was a great chance for me to try their pizza, and luckily for me, the coupon was for the downtown location. Hubs and I decided to cash in our voucher after picking up our race packets for the Big Hit half marathon at Slugger Field. We sat down to an early dinner (around 5), and after much discussion between hostesses, we were seated at the booth down a hall as far in the back as you could go without sitting in the kitchen. The interior is pretty huge, and there were maybe 5 other parties in the whole restaurant. It was a strange choice, but ultimately didn't really matter. What we noticed first were the prices. The prices of the specialty pizzas seemed unbelieveably high (who would ever pay $26 for a small deluxe?) , and the build-your-own pizza option we chose seemed reasonable ($14.99 for a medium cheese on original crust) until you see that they charge $2.50(!) per topping. We ordered our favorite - bacon, mushroom, and garlic - which brough the total to $22.49. Fine. If it was great pizza, then it would be worth the price. But the thing is, it's not great pizza. I'm not sure it's even good pizza. The first thing we noticed when it was brought to our table was "whoa, cheese!" The weight of the pie was at least 2/3 from the cheese, which was just melted, and not at all bubbly or browned. The fact that they have the option to order extra cheese (for $3 nonetheless!) seems like a sick joke. All the cheese could have been okay if the toppings were just as plentiful to balance the amount of cheese (especially given the $7.50 price tag) but sadly that was not the case. The bacon was small crumbles, the garlic was unseen (but tasted), and the mushrooms were sliced paper thin. The crust was surprisingly crisp and good, and overall taste was fine, but I could barely finish 1 1/2 slices, even after removing giant blobs of quickly-hardening cheese. The leftovers have been sitting in our fridge untouched, and I don't really have any desire to try another slice anytime soon. Luckily, we checked yelp right before we ordered and got the breadsticks as an appetizer. They were warm and soft and buttery, and came with pizza sauce for dipping (which we were later charged an additional $1.50 for, but did not specifically order...) and were the only bright spot in the meal. Overall, don't waste your time or money. There are plenty of pizza places in Louisville making pies right.

Pizza was good but service left a lot to be desired. We went to this place for a work lunch. Restaurants downtown are usually aware that if you're eating lunch there on weekdays, you probably have to get back to work in an hour. Our server not only showed no sense of urgency but she also never checked on us, not to mention messing up a couple of orders. Food delays cannot be blamed on hapless servers but our food actually arrived quickly; a few of our co-workers were waiting on refills for over 10-15 minutes (mind you, they were not very busy and she certainly didn't have 5 tables she was juggling), it took us ages to get our checks after we asked for them and even longer to get our cards back. We ended up being there for over an hour and 40 minutes. We're definitely going to avoid Impellizeri's for lunch on weekdays. It's a shame the service is so mediocre after this restaurant was listed in Zagat's 50 States 50 Pizzas.

Upon moving to Louisville, it was evident to me that pizza was important to this city. As someone who appreciates having a variety of different pizza offerings available to me, this fact was important to me. Early on, Impellizzeri's seemed like one of the must-try places. It took me a while to venture to one of their locations, but a LivingSocial deal for the downtown location finally pushed my wife and I over the edge. We went for an early dinner and despite the fact that this place was pretty empty were sat in a booth down a hall all the way in the back of the restaurant. This wasn't a big deal to us but seemed odd. Overall, the interior was a little too big and sparse for my liking and didn't give me that warm feeling that I want from a pizza place. As mentioned above, we had a LivingSocial for this place, so the financial damage was going to be minimized but I was still shocked at how expensive this place was. A medium pizza starts at $14.99 with toppings being an additional $2.50 each. That sounds very high to me, but could be justified if they really delivered. The wife and I decided to order a pizza with bacon, mushroom and garlic, as this has become our de facto barometer pizza used to compare the offerings from competing pizza joints. The service here was pretty good and the wait for the pizza was not bad, but when it came out, it honestly was just not very appealing to the eye. I'm sure this is no surprise to any Impellizzeri's regulars, but this thing is loaded with cheese. While this style of pizza is not my favorite, if done well, it can be a nice alternative. Unfortunately, our pizza was not done well, meaning that this thing felt severely undercooked. Even thinking about it now makes me a little nauseous, as it just tasted doughy and cheesy, but not in a good way, as nothing was bubbly or browned. To top it all off (excuse the pun), those $2.50 toppings were severely lacking. The bacon resembled bacon bits and the mushrooms were paper-thin. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with Impellizzeri's. It is not a huge deal to me, because there are so many great pizza places in Louisville I have already enjoyed and many more I wish to try. I will allow it is possible that the downtown location may be weaker than the others or that we were simply served a poorly prepared pizza, but in reality, the experience was so lacking and so overpriced that I certainly will not be returning to Impellizzeri's of my own volition.

Ate here with family on a Friday night. Despite that, we were seated almost immediately. Good: The breadsticks were possibly the best I've ever had. Pillowy sticks of soft dough, brown on top and swimming in a sea of garlic butter. Meh: The pizza, surprisingly. We ordered a large pepperoni and homemade Italian sausage on the original crust. The crust was pretty nondescript, with no real character or texture to it, while the sauce was lacking in something. The pepperoni seemed fairly standard, while the sausage was in such small pieces that it was hard to get much sense of how it tasted. Bad: Being seated next to the "stage" where a local guitar duo was performing. Very hard to hear any conversation at the table. Also, our waiter was slow, would disappear at times and had to be asked to bring silverware. On the other hand, he was quick in getting drinks for us. The rating is higher than it would be otherwise solely on the strength of the breadsticks.

Open on Sunday now! We had tried to go on a Sunday in the past, and recently found out that they are now open on Sunday. We went late evening, 9pm. There may have been 4 other tables max. Our service was pretty good. It was evident that they were starting procedures to close. We ordered the Meats pizza and were very pleased with the quality and taste! It was uniformly and perfectly topped. The crust was crispy and the toppings/cheese extened all the way to the crust. Not knowing how hearty their pizza's are, we ordered a medium for the two of us, and had three pieces to take home. The only minus about this dining experience was the music. It wasn't to our taste and was rather loud, so it was hard to ignore. I wish they had a location in the South end.

Impellizzeri's looked fantastic from the sidewalk. In fact, it looked so good as we were walking by, that we decided to go there after the Bats baseball game. It was about 9 p.m., so we got seated immediately. There were maybe 4 or 5 other tables full. The interior itself was nice, felt inviting and relaxing. We ordered a pizza and breadsticks (one other girl got chicken alfredo). The breadsticks really were pretty good. But, some good bread covered in garlic butter will work for me anytime. They were, however, quite enormous. I couldn't quite decide on the pizza, but I think I ended up slightly disappointed. The crust was amazing, and it had pretty good flavor. However, there was mounds of cheese (yes, I do believe in too much cheese) and it wasn't quite browned enough. The toppings were pretty scarce, especially when paying $2.50 for each topping. It was still a good pizza, but not quite what we expected when passing by.

I ate here for lunch with a friend. Bar tender was rude, inattentive, and unfriendly. Had a lunch special of a slice of pizza and small salad. I ate 2-3 bites of the pizza before giving up on it because it was awful. A few hours later, started feeling sick, and spent the next 2 days in bed with food poisoning. I created a Yelp account just to inform other people of this restaurant and its poor quality standards. If you're eager for poor service, poor food, and don't mind a little food poisoning with your lunch, stop by!

This restaurant was extremely overpriced for a product that underdelivered. Our first indication that there was a problem was the fact that there were only two tables filled when we walked into the location on Whiskey Row during the dinner hour on Tuesday night. The pizzas ranged in price from $14.99 for a medium cheese pizza (+$2 for each topping) to $49.99 for a super pizza with most of the specialty pizzas ranging from $25-$35 for a medium. As a point of comparison, Bearnos, which is directly across the street, charges $17-$21 for their medium specialty pizzas with their super pizza being $31.99 and a medium cheese pizza being $11.99 (+$1.49 per topping). As we looked over the menu we hoped that Impellizzeri's would be worth the significant price difference. So, we ordered a medium cheese pizza on original crust and an order of breadsticks. When the breadsticks came they were floating tray of garlic oil. I went through a stack of napkins trying to eat them. This would have been much better served in a bowl as a dipping sauce. They also served marinara sauce with the breadsticks which we were later charged an extra $1.50 for even though we had not requested the sauce. When the pizza arrived it was decent but not anything extraordinary. It did have an abundance of cheese on it and the crust was crispy but the sauce was underseasoned and overall the pizza didn't stand out. I really think that Impellizzeri's either needs to lower their price point to be able to compete with Bearno's accross the street or they need to become more interesting and innovative to compete with Garage Bar which is just a few blocks away. Right now I'm afraid that they are quickly fading away in the Louisville pizza scene because they simply aren't delivering the product that is demanded from the price point that they are trying to compete in.

Impellizzeri's is fantastic! Great atmosphere, amazing pizza. We also had the black tie cake for dessert, and it was heavenly. There is a reason why it's been voted the best of Louisville six times! Next time we are in the area, we will definitely stop by.

Louisville is a great town for local independent pizzerias, however Impellizzeri's is clearly the don. Their pizzas are huge, heavy, and unhealthy, so come with a group and share. This location is great if you're downtown for a Cards game or concert at the Yum!. Of course, parking is always an issue but the whole area is very safe and very walkable, so fear not. You'll be surprised at how spacious the restaurant is once inside and the staff is always friendly and attentive. Impellizzeri's is more expensive than the other local joints but it is worth the extra dollars.

Buck off beers at happy hour. Good selection of local brew, and some yummy pie. I got a thin crust Italian sausage, olive, and mushroom. It was good, but I like my sausage in big, meaty chunks. The meat on my pizza was more like ground granules. It was still good though, just not my style of meat. I returned the next night for some live music, and no cover charge. There was a pretty decent band playing a little bit of everything. Good fun!

Thin crust pizza was limp and soggy. I think they put on too much toppings. It just didn't taste all that good. Pasta dish was OK. I like the restaurant itself, big and airy. The staff was very engaging and friendly. Large bar areA if you solo. Quick service. OK menu items. The quality of the food was lacking.

We ordered the stuffed mushrooms, dinner salad, and a pizza. The mushrooms were delicious! I would definitely order them again. The salad wasn't anything special, don't waste your money. The pizza was pretty good; very cheesy and the tomato sauce was good.

Could be lots better! Stuffed mushrooms overlooked terrible! Ordered 3 pizzas they too over cooked ! 5pm and we were one of only 2 tables and total of 5 customers! I see why now SUCKS! Pricey too! Never be back!

Ummmmmm, supposed to be great pizza, read the reviews? Do you people eat Chef boyardi? Cause this undercooked dough, paper thin pepperoni, slick way to make pizza toppings look generous, not to mention, the $18 price tag, please if your ideas on food begin with a trip to Wendy's then stop writing reviews. This place sucks. Period. On the plus side, beer was cold. Server was nice.

  • Heath C.

My buddy and I frequent here often since its right across the street from our office. As far as pizza rates, I'd give it a 7/10. It always prepared consistently and tastes adequately good, but its missing that something special/different to make it stand out from other pizzas. The bread sticks however.....wow. They are HUGE! And they come smothered in garlic butter, so they are bursting with flavor. 2 bread sticks alone are enough to feed one person as their entire meal. During lunch you can get a slice of pizza, 2 bread sticks, and a drink for around 8 bucks, so its a pretty decent deal. The atmosphere inside is very much like a sports bar. There are lots of big TVs that are usually showing sports and the tables are all wood and casual feeling. On warmer days, the outside seating area is very nice as its still technically under the roof but there are large open windows that let's the outside air in.

I was lured in by Zagat's "50 States, 50 Pizzas" list, and this place delivered. To our table, not to our hotel. For starters, go with the original crust. Now I normally go against thinner-type crusts... not because I am a Chicago pizza guy, but because I love doughy, bready pizza... but this one incorporates every awesome texture and taste that a pizza crust should. It's light and crispy, but not teeth-shattering, rock hard crispy. That, of course, is no bueno. I was intrigued by the deep dish but a minimum 45 minute wait was not going to work and I had to go back to work. It's not like this wasn't a work trip, y'all. Load up on toppings because they load up the ones you order. Go big or go home, right? Oh wait, this is Kentucky, not Texas. Their sausage was the hit of the pizza. It's not the big sausage patties or huge chunks like most places; rather, it's finely ground up sausage and covers the entire pie. I haven't been able to find sausage done like that since way back when I was a youngin' at a local place to my parents' house. So good, I swear to you. I spied another group chowing down on breadsticks and know that, if I return in the future, I will be adding that to my list to order. Carb city!! But don't make the mistake I did. Get them. If anything they'll soak up all the bourbon you drink later. And don't skip out on a salad. With all the carbs and greasy goodness flowing through your mouth you need to veggie up a lil bit. Under $50 with tip for 3 salads, 3 beverages and a one-too-many-toppings pizza. This place is huge, be social and get out if you're passing through. Oh, and they play good music, too. All in all, delicious, inexpensive, and just plain good. Factoid. Don't let the haters fool ya, this place is GOOD STUFF.

I've been wanting to eat here for months...so disappointed. First, let me say, I will go back to try the pizza before completely giving up. Second time's a charm, right? ;) Hubs & I went fur lunch; spaghetti & meatballs for me, fettuccini alfredo for him. The pasta was mushy in both meals, red sauce was VERY sweet and the alfredo was terribly bland. Meatballs were good, but a far cry from great. But hey, the breadstick that came with the meal was killer...go figure.

We started our meal with garlic breadsticks and cheese bread. Some people at our table liked the breadsticks better (me) and other people enjoyed the cheese bread. Both were very good" we ordered a chicken, bacon, ranch pizza for the table. It did not take very long (we thought it might take awhile but it did not). We enjoyed the pizza but several of us honestly thought that the appetizers were better than the pizza. The service was good and she kept our drinks refilled. Don't know that I will go out of my way to go back.

I frequent this place when I go to concerts. It's a great value and great tasting. They have PBR so that's a plus too. I'll keep going back here too. I went Wednesday night before Selena Gomez and got the coupon off of their website for a 2 topping large pizza, 2 side salads and breadsticks. The kids both got sprites and I got a PBR. The total bill was $23. You can't beat that.

Great food, great service! We ordered the breadstix, recommended by our server. They were smothered in butter and garlic--amazing! We also ordered a small pizza which was loaded with cheese! Everything came out hot. Food took a little longer, but well worth the wait!

I've been to three different Impellizzeri's. This is my favorite! No matter which one, this is the best pizza in the world, hands down! The sauce on their pizza is what does it for me; spicy! Thick with meat and cheese not just crust.

Worst restaurant experience I've ever had. I've eaten here several times, and the food is always pretty good. I figured it would've been busy for Derby but was surprised when we were the only table besides one other gentleman dining. There were at least 10 employees standing around, which I understand they probably wanted to watch the race but when I'm not greeted for more than five minutes in a dead restaurant, we have our first issue. Our server finally got to us and we ordered drinks, cheese bread and a pepperoni pizza. Simple.. You would think. It took more than 15 minutes for our cheese bread to come out, and it came out over cooked, and our server wasn't the one to bring it. Less than a minute later our pizza comes out.. Brought out by, you guessed it, another employee that isn't our server. She gets us refills as well. She brought my drink back and our server finally shows up with my husband's other beer.. Drops it off and walks off, doesn't say another word, doesn't ask how we are doing, nothing. Our server goes and sits at the bar and plays on his phone. We both bite into the pizza and it tastes weird. Neither of us think it tastes right so at this point we decide we are done. We try to get our server's attention, but he's still too busy on his phone. He finally noticed we are sitting there not eating and comes over to check on us. We calmly explain the issues we have had and that we are unhappy.. We offer to pay for what we ate and drank, but said we didn't want to pay for the pizza. He comes back with the check and what do you know!?.. He got the cheese bread taken off. Umm, sorry but that won't cut it.. We said we'd pay for the cheese bread since we did eat some of it, but I'm not paying for a whole pizza we didn't eat. So he gets it switched around and we pay and leave.. Lesson learned the hard way: if a restaurant is completely empty and it takes more than 5 minutes to get some attention, leave immediately. You'd think if a restaurant is dead servers would be fighting for tables, to make as much money as possible.. Apparently he didn't need the money.

Pizza sauce is bit spicy which is really good. Good seasoning on pizza. We had thin crust. Breadsticks are tasty and doughy. Cool environment inside with lots of tvs and couches.

So my husband and I were starving and felt like having pizza. We were seated and then waited 5+ minutes just to be greeted at our table. Considering there were only a few tables filled it's safe to say we were irritated. So finally we were asked if we wanted something to drink and by then we were ready to order food. The server took our drink order but would not take our food order. Another 10 minutes goes by and finally our drinks come and we can place our food order, an artichoke dip appetizer and pizza to follow. In the 20 minutes we waited for just our appetizer the table that just got seated got their appetizer and their pizza! We never received anything so we left. Don't waste your time with this place
