Remember the days when business owners could afford to be stingy? If you forgot, go the the Hill Street Fish Fry! I was in a hurry passing through Old Louisville and this was the only place I could stop to get a quick bite to eat on the go. I asked for the special of the day, the cashier told me the price, and when I handed her a debit card she told me there was an additional charge. Sure, it's just $.50, but it's also a surefire way to tell your customer, "Hey, I'm just as miserable as you are. If you want something fancy, like an owner that pays their own credit card fees, then go anywhere else." I will.

Where's the meat? Went there tonight and got a whitefish sandwich to go. The fish was paper thin and mostly breading. The corn nuggets were the best part of the meal.

The fish is okay, and it gets 2 stars because it is one of your only options if you're living in Old Louisville. If you have time to go somewhere else you probably should. How does the most densely populated area of Louisville have so few restaurants? Old Louisville is a restaurant desert, so I found myself begrudgingly returning time after time. The owner is just not a friendly guy and he tacks on an additional charge for just about everything. Come with cash or you will pay an extra credit card fee. Refills are an extra charge and they put so much ice in the Styrofoam cup you will need one. Extra anything, extra charge. The man is a blunt penny-pinching business man. It really isn't that expensive though, and the fish is okay. Order to-go or eat outside. The restaurant is cramped and you'll have to listen to people argue with the cashier the entire time you're there.

Extremely mediocre food. The fish seemed fresh but the batter was underseasoned - didn't seem to have a hint of salt. Sides were also underseasoned. Tried the oyster roll - maybe I just don't like oyster rolls but it tasted like doughy, chewy paper. Clam strips tasted like they were freshly fried from a frozen store bought bag. They didn't have malt vinegar at all in the shop which to me is a no-no for anyone serving fried fish. Prices aren't even that reasonable for the food you end up getting.

I like their fish and the fried mushrooms are my favorite. Their batter has gotten a little salty over years but overall still pretty good.

The only reason to go here is if you live in the food desert known as old Louisville The fish is doughy and undercooked. The prices are a touch on the high side and they charge a credit card fee which is illegal. The only reason this place exists is due to the limited local options

This place is tiny, but the food is great. If your looking for "light" health seafood, move on down the road. But if you like great fried fish shrimp and oysters this is a place you have to try. The rolled oysters are great and the fish is perfect.

Before flying out I had to make one more foodie stop at Hill Street Fish Fry. I was on a mission to sample a rolled oyster. A rolled oyster is a baseball-sized seafood dish that is found only in and around Louisville. It consists of three raw oysters dipped in an egg-milk cornmeal batter called pastinga, rolled in cracker crumbs (hence the name), and deep fried. They were first served by Italian immigrant Phillip Mazzoni and his brothers in the late 19th century as a free giveaway to their saloon patrons with a purchased beer or whiskey. It is unknown if rolled oysters were actually invented by the Mazzonis, or if the recipe was brought over from Italy with them. During prohibition, Mazzoni's remained open by selling these oysters in their new restaurant and it became a popular food item all over town. Today, most seafood restaurants and fish fries in the Louisville area will have their own version of these on their menus. I'll admit, I was hesitant to go in. The area looked kind of run down, as did some of the patrons. The restaurant is small. Kind of like a trailer. There is very limited seating, the decor is gawdy. Random fish items, bright yellow paint, but from the number of people coming in and out you know this has gotta be a gem. I only got a rolled oyster but I feel I should have tried more of the fish. Everyone was ordering a white fish sandwich. And the owner, who did a lot of the cooking, thanked me many times for stopping by. I wasn't impressed with the oyster roll. It was too doughy inside, which is probably how it's supposed to be. It's like a hush puppy, but mushier and the oysters were small. The girl taking my order (and asking me all about my life history and telling me about hers) suggested I eat it with cocktail sauce. Prices were decent. The help friendly. It's for sure a dive but I hope to someday return to sample more items and give this a fair review.

I was happy to meet a friend in Old Louisville for lunch recently but felt stumped when they said they needed to eat fish since it was Friday (and during Lent). I racked my brain before remembering that - way back when - I had gotten fish sandwiches at the Hill Street Fish Fry. Watch for this place, because you can pass it by if you bat an eye. My friend and I were lucky enough to find a parking spot, even with the restaurant bursting at the seams once we got inside. There are a few cafe-style tables once you get inside, and we grabbed one after ordering. Drinks were brought to our table a minute later, and sandwiches followed a few minutes after that. As other posters have mentioned, they are HOT! But they're also delicious if you want flaky white fish sandwiches. I added some tartar sauce, and with my side of fries, it was not bad for a fried fish sandwich during the Lenten season.

This is my favorite place in Louisville for a fish sandwich. The white fish is delicious, and the fries are crispy and have a great taste. My husband says the scallops are always sweet and delicious. There are a few tables in this little restauant so we eat in. Each time we're there a steady stream of customers come in to order carry-out. I love this place!

We currently live in the Food Era. We know the make up of plants, their various varieties, their seasonal timeline, where they're sourced, their cost, their nutritional benefits, the ways to enhance them with certain herbs and seasonings, and of course, their flavor. Having to digest all this information will make you full before the first bite even hits your tongue. Hill Street Fish Fry doesn't cater to any of this kind of pretentiousness, but instead offers a menu at its simplest. This tiny, blink and you miss it, establishment is sandwiched between the sprawling manufacturing plants of Old Louisville. There's nothing fancy about its concrete block structure and upon entering you'll feel as if you've stepped into the owner's living scrapbook. Photographs of family members wallpaper the interior alongside the endless inspirational/comical quotes on life. The seating is limited to a few parlor tables and chairs with a few additional tables outside under cover of a nice big tree. First and foremost, this place is about fish. A variety of fish decor takes up what free wall space is available alongside photographs of the owner proudly grinning as he grasps a remarkable catch in his hands. The menu board lists whitefish sandwiches in sizes of small, large, and super. I'm not sure if whitefish is the actual name of a fish or the owner's attempt to keep it simple. The fish is served on a choice of white, wheat, or rye sandwich bread, which always causes me to smirk. Something about putting a piece of fried fish on common store bought loaf bread is humorous to me. The fried fish is served in strip portions opposed to whole fillets, so the bigger the sandwich the more strips. For $5, the small sandwich had three strips of fish. Expect to wait for a bit because each sandwich is made to order and you can actually hear it being fried as soon as the phrase "order up" is uttered. Because of this, the sandwiches are hot which is a good thing, but let it also be a warning to you if you eat one. The breadcrumb coating was bland but the fish tasted fresh. If it weren't for the tub of tarter sauce that accompanied it, this fish would have no flavor at all which from my experience seems to be pretty standard among fish sandwich shops. I'm not sure why. Fish sandwich- Thumbs sideways Price- Thumbs sideways Fried food = Hill Street Blues- Thumbs up

I am always looking for a good fish place. A good friend of mine suggested this place to me, so I decided to try it. I never even noticed this place because of the size. If you blink, you may just miss it. I had the #1, which was a white fish sandwich, a drink and fries. I was disappointed in the size of the drink, could've been larger. Also, for refills cost about $0.35, now what's that all about? LOL!! Also, I am glad I had cash because they charge $0.50 if you use a debit card. I fish was ok (not the best I have had). I am going to give it another try for the catfish and the hushpuppies. If you are looking for fish, I would encourage you to give this place a try and let me know your thoughts. .
