I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. The food is outstanding and the atmosphere is one that is hard to match. The menu boasts a number of excellent items, from the Steak au poivre to Poulet. Anthony is very knowledgeable of the wine list and always has excellent pairing suggestions. Staff is friendly. This is a must for a special night.

THE OK/GOOD: The baked tomato (that came with the NY Strip)--the best thing on 2 steak plates. The $12 about 5"-diameter Soufflé was pretty to look at, ok to eat. Unfortunately, no hint of the Grand Mariner was ever detected. Steak Tenderness--could cut with regular knife! Prices of what we ordered were the same on their web site. The air conditioning worked on a hot day. VENUE/DÉCOR: Dim lighting. White tablecloths, white dishes, 2 candles per table. French piped in music. Rustic walls. Table did have salt and pepper shakers without us having to ask for them, and only had to remove the tops to get contents out.) THE BAD: NO FLAVOR: Both steaks. The NY Strip's cream brandy sauce was undetectable. [Day(s) old?] baguette. The fries. BURNED FLAVOR: Filet's "veal stock reduction" Sauce - looked like the bottom of a coffee pot of at the after left on the burner all day. MENUS - Both on line and in person: Did not disclose steak weight before or after cooking, so size was disappointing. CELEBRATION VENUE?: A "delightfully subtle" complimentary burning candle offered on non-complimentary dessert. TEMPERATURE: Good, if, if, if, if you like cold steak (we didn't, and were not warned) While the on-line menu says, "Consuming raw or undercooked meats, fish, shellfish or eggs may increase your risk of food-borne illness". The half egg in the Lyonnaise was runny, and no one asked us if we insisted on an uncooked egg. SERVICE: Only one server for about 6 parties. Never offered lemon for the water. SLOW: On a week night, took 2 hours to get in and get out. 5:35: ARRIVED & seated. 5:40: Took our ordering for drinks, entre, and dessert. 5:50 Asst Server tonged 1 each 1" Diameter x 1/2" crust hard as a rock Baguette with about 1 teaspoon of bread inside the crust onto the bread plate. 5:55: Salads arrived. 6:13: Entres came. 6:23: Entres eaten. 6:45: Dessert (ordered at 5:35) came. The only hot food we got. 7:25: Bill paid and When we asked for take-home boxes, the asst server took our plates and returned filled boxes with only the meat and not the sides. When I asked, Do you still have, and may we have the rest, server went and came back from who knows where with only one person's remainder sides. VALUE: #0 of 10. $37 filet appeared to be 3-4 oz. $10.50: 8?oz of house wine. $11 Lyonaise salad with 3 ea whole mini asparagus sprigs sliced half to look like 6., about 3 1/2" x 1/16" x 3/8" bacon not crisp, 4 ea 1/2"-cube croutons. $9 house salad consisted of about a cup of feathery leaves, 3 paper-thin radishes, and a few nuts. The 1/4 cup mashed potatoes side had no lumps. The single 5"L x ¾"W carrot was not obvious it'd been cooked; its white outside looked like it had been peeled last week. None of the "Prix Fixe" 4-course dishes sounded good, especially when you get only half-sizes, especially now that I know what regular sizes are. . . CONSISTENCY - NOT: Yelp and Trip Advisor pictures show the same dish/menu item never looks the same. VENUE: Our table was about 5 feet from the door, and the chair even closer when pulled out- in too close to guests coming in and exiting. SUGGEST: Keep the foyer table in the closet until the crowd demands it? Most seating was bench-type. RETURN POSSIBILITY? If necessary for someone else, and if I couldn't find an excuse to meet them after, I'd order only the baked tomato and the soufflé.

Three stars: It is expensive but the food is very flavorful. I had a lovely dinner here last week with my girlfriend. We enjoyed some red wine and great conversation. I am not always a fan of the wines I pick while I am out to eat. I just don't want to spend $40 on a $20 or less bottle of wine!! I know I am whining (hehehe) but I think it is ridiculous to pay that much of a markup. The wine we ordered was ok. Nothing fantastic but not 2 buck Chuck either. Anyway - the important part was the food and it was lovely. I got the salmon with a lemon sauce and it was wonderful. I have come to understand that I could really bypass most food and just drink a bowl of whatever awesome sauce there is available. They actually served the salmon perfectly cooked however so they went together perfectly. Salmon description: Grilled Scottish salmon, basil garlic Israeli couscous, ratatouille, rosemary Dijon beurre blanc (. My girlfriend got the tenderloin. The sauce for the steak was lovely but the steak itself was a bit tough. For the price I want a steak to have had a full body massage so it is so crazy butter tender before being seared and put on my plate at a nice medium rare. The Filet description: Sauteed prime beef served with mashed potatoes, asparagus, carrot, maître d'butter and veal stock reduction. (Ps - the carrot was straight out of a REAL garden and it was yummy)

Merveilleuse expérience! Six of us were here on a Saturday night by reservation. Arriving early, we gathered on the air-side deck while our table was readied. Wait staff welcomed us graciously. Once seated, our server helped us understand the menu with grace and authority. When I expressed some upset at the lack of Viognier by-the-glass, the sommelier offered to crack a by-the-bottle-only varietal so as to serve only two of us. Yes! Finally, Viognier in Louisville! Six of us ordered entrees as varied as trout and fillet mignon. Each order was prepared precisely to order. Dessert: truly amuse-bouche. Other Louisville venues aspiring to haute cuisine can learn from Bistro Le Relais: Servers who have mastered their craft. A chef whose talent warrants a premium price. Beverages to appeal to a refined palette. Flexibility commiserate with a premium experience. Bien joué!

The chicken I ordered and my husbands lamb chops were delicious! I also had a Lobster hush puppy made with couscous and a red pepper beurre blanc which I obviously inhaled because I didn't even get a picture before it was gone! Service was great-all around good experience especially being right on Bowman field it takes you back about fifty years to a classier time:)

Back on top! Unique food- Salad with pears, raspberries, goat cheese. Cold appetizer soup. Pork roast. Fabulous service...and music. Can't be beat on a hot Sunday night. Proseco of course with a soufflé for dessert.

Very nice cozy atmosphere inside and nice view on the patio to watch the planes take off and land. I had a chilled watermelon soup which was a first for me but worth the experience. The chicken with Madeira sauce was perfect and so filling! I almost passed on the creme brûlée and so glad I didn't. It was creamy and not overbearingly sweet.

Valentine's Day is upon us. Hubby and I chose Le Relais for our special day for its historical charm and relaxed elegance. We were glad that our expectations were met and exceeded at Le Relais. I love that they offer to take your coat as soon as you enter the restaurant. The lighting is just dim enough to make the silverwares glow but not so much so I cannot see the details on my plate. The atmosphere is relaxed like a bistro should be: in between greeting guests, the owner was sitting at one of the tables having wine with friends. Now the food: it actually converted my non-Francophile hubby! He ordered the Steak Au Poivre and just raved about the black pepper brandy cream sauce and of course the frites. The steak was done to a perfect medium like he wanted. I had to make sure he ordered the night's dessert special: Grand Marnier Souffle...more on that later. I had to try their Prix Fixe since a four course bistro dinner just felt special. I chose the Winter Salad; Roasted Cornish Game Hen followed by cheese course and Chocolate Mousse Profiterole. I must say my choices were all good but a bit boring for my taste. I will be choosing something more "French" such as Country Pate and Beef Bourguignon next time. Now our desserts!! I am so glad hubby "ordered" the souffle!! The servers timed its arrival perfectly. It arrived at the table in all its glory: at least 3 inches above the rim. My picture just does not do it justice since I had to watch it being broken and creme anglaise poured on top. One taste and hubby and I knew we had to switch desserts. I gladly gave him my Mousse Profiterol and grabbed the souffle. It was so light, fluffy and just sweet enough. Hubby raved about his very chocolaty mousse. Since it disappeared just as fast as my souffle. I'm sure it is a must on his books for next time, too! Le Relais is romantic, elegant (they crumb your tables!) but relaxed and friendly at the same time. The prices are more approachable than steakhouses, but the service is on par. We will certainly be back for more dinners at Le Relais.

I recently booked the Bowman Field original terminal adjacent to Bistro LeRelais for a private event. All I can say is WOW! From the friendly, informative professional assistance from Kelly in booking the event, to the incredible menu suggested by Chef Alex, to the impeccable service from the staff and bartender (Jake) the day of, the entire experience was 5 star. Kelly had wonderful suggestions and really listened to what I was looking for, and worked tirelessly to make it happen. Chef Alex created an entire menu around our tastes and preferences supplying succulent appetizers, fresh vegetables, and unique dishes the pleased all in attendance. Jake and the serving staff were consummate professionals, while still making the event fun and lively even catering to the needs of our young guests (a dozen or so under the age of 10). The bar selections and cocktails were expertly prepared and the venue looked gorgeous. Le Relais is well known around town for the perfect date night spot, but they SHINE at hosting larger events in the atrium as well. I simply cannot say enough about them and will be recommending them for anyone looking to host a memorable reception, birthday, graduation or engagement party or just a sophisticated cocktail party in a fantastic original Louisville historical location. BRAVO!

I really don't care for the typical broad brush feeling I get every time I think French so I almost always hesitate about going to Le Relais. The owner, who is actually Swiss but likes to pretend he's French, fits the stereotype perfectly and he's the first thing you see upon entering this sophisticated, yet comfortable restaurant. So, once we were seated on the back patio, in the waning sun watching the planes take off and land after performing at Thunder Over Louisville, I was ready for my French experience. Teeth gritted and cocktail list in hand. The planes were, of course, an unusual treat, but the service, the food, the everything, was just plain fabulous. We started with the country pate which was perfect, went for the Caesar salad which was standard but still excellent, escargots and finally the French bread pudding. I embarrassed myself by sopping up the butter and smiling at every little snail that went down and the bread pudding was so good I'll never be able to look a bourbon sauced bread pudding in the face again. We split everything so it wasn't too much, just right and the waiter was accommodating while also being unobtrusive. Toss in some wine and cocktails and the night couldn't have been better. I like the French (maybe Swiss) a little better now.

One of my favorite restaurants in Louisville . Perfect in the spring and summer for Sitting on the back patio watching all the planes fly into Bowman field . The food is always amazing. I highly suggest starting the meal off with their signature crab cake and a glass of champagne !

You simply must order the Cotelettes Nageau, grilled lamb chops. It's the absolute best lamb dish I've ever had every single time I order it. The owner is there to greet his returning guests. And a wonderful little jazz ensemble plays all evening.

Food was very good. Service was French; they hesitate to bring a to-go box and refused to have it seen on the table. Mussels to start were decadent. I wasn't impressed with the caesar salad, but girlfriend said it was standard. My steak was perfectly prepared. Girlfriend loved her chicken. Will definitely be back. (Note: I was underdressed in a teeshirt but I think the guys with ties were overdressed.)

My husband and I recently dined here for our anniversary. We did the prix fixe meal, and we were very pleased with the food and service. The owner was very attentive to the diners. The food was perfectly cooked. My husband got a cocktail called French 75, which was very delicious. I had a cocktail with sparkling wine and blackberry liqueur, which was very delectable. My husband chose the lamb, while I went with the salmon. Both were enjoyable, but the salmon was the better choice of the two. One of our favorite course was the cheese plate. My mouth waters thinking about the cheeses we were served. The dessert was chocolate mousse with a raspberry sauce. It was very light and decadent. The perfect ending to a prefect evening.

What an amazing restaurant! I would go so far as to guarantee your tastes buds will leave wanting more. This French bistro is tucked in the historic Bowman Field Terminal just off of the taxi way. while eating there in the summer out on the porch you will be treated to planes flying in and out of the airport, but not so much as to take away from the intimate dinner environment. The heavenly smell coming from your plate will pale in comparison to the way it tastes. I personally love the Saint-Jacques, the caramelized mushrooms are amazing with the scallops. The diverse wine list will not let up on the bombardment of flavor. I enjoy a glass of the Drouhin Beaujolais Villages. It's also nice that the owner, Anthony, comes around to each table to ensure everything is beyond your expectations. It's always a plus when the owner consistently interacts with the customers. The only drawback is the price, but you get what you pay for and in this case, the food is worth the money. Great restaurant would highly recommend to friends and family.

Le Relais is our new favorite restaurant in Louisville! I'm not sure why we haven't been here before - we've read such wonderful reviews over the years. We finally dined at Le Relais over the weekend and were not disappointed. We arrived around 6:45 and the place seemed almost vacant. Needless to say, we were a little worried. But, over the next hour, patrons kept arriving and soon the place was filled to capacity with a pleasant hum. The wine selection was the best we'd seen in this city and included a favorite label we'd never seen in any other local restaurant. The food was outstanding. My sweetie had a New York Strip - as tender as any filet he'd had at the finest steakhouses in town, at any price. I ordered the Beef Bourguignon, which was the perfect warm dish for a cold winter evening. We ordered the Chocolate Soufflé for dessert. The service was wonderful and the servers took our coats to hang up as soon as we arrived. What a nice touch. We are trying to find some negative aspect to include in this review to ensure we are being fair, but we just can't think of anything negative to say. We will return!

We had lunch today at Le Relais, perfect. My wife started with a crisp and tasty Caesar salad. I started with smoked salmon on a potato pancake, beautiful presentation, equally delicious. We both had the crab cake, scallop and risotto with spinach and mushrooms. The entrées were scrumptious. Alas we were too full for dessert, so we opted for cappuccino a nice ending. Le Relais is only open for lunch in December, for the past two years. Dinners are always great. Mark your calendars for December, 2014 for lunch at Le Relais.

We had the mussels for an appetizer and the sauce was amazing. Scallops and the pork special for entree's. The presentation, quality and overall taste were worthy of a 5 star restaurant. Again, the sauce on the scallops was delicious. Our server seemed to be new but the Owner kept checking in with us throughout the meal. Wines are excellent and reasonably priced. One of the best meals I've had in a while.

My birthday dinner tonight was overshadowed by our TERRIBLY UNPROFESSIONAL waitress with a terrible attitude from the get-go. The food was wonderful but we waited 20 minutes for orders to be taken, bad bottle service- bottles were not presented, we were ignored (though we ordered a $90 bottle of champagne to celebrate upon arriving), and given an attitude. We weren't told the specials and had to flag her down to place any kind of order, which seemed to be an imposition on her night. The food tasted wonderful, but truly the service tainted the meal. Our waitress didn't even tell us her name! Just looking at our bill, her name is Elizabeth. I don't know that I will go back- too many other great restaurants in the city of Louisville with great service to waste my time and money here. Le Relais may have seen it's day, but competition requires any restaurant to step up the service to compete. A fading star. Au revoir.

Le Relais has been one of my all-time favorites in Louisville. I first went there about 10 years ago when I was studying French at Indiana University Southeast and my Prof, Madame Garnier recommended it. I have a passion for all things French and this place did not disappoint. Greeted at the door by Anthony, with a very French welcome started the evening off right. For the first course, I selected the mussels which were perfectly prepared and the sauce was amazing. I could not dip enough baquette in it! Next, I had the lamb and it was juicy, with the exact amount of seasoning. For dessert, I oculd not resist the souffle. I forgot to mention the wine selection was fantastic with several bottles in the $25-$30 pirce range. The service has been outstanding every time. In the summer, I suggest going on a Snday evening and sitting on the back patio. It is more casual and they have live music. Sip some wine and watch the planes landing at Bowman Field.

The food was great! I am basing my rating on the entirety of the experience- which to my disappointment, was not very French. I began to speak French to the server, and her, nor any of the servers, spoke French.... This was sad. Also, the names of the menu items were butchered- mixing french and english words throughout. I loved the atmospher and the food- just dont expect anything to be French but the name and the bread.

BEWARE! In my experience, Le Relais does not respect their customers or their privacy. Any information you provide will stay with them permanently and you'll never be able to be removed from their solicitations. I have not lived in Louisville since 2005 and have been trying to have my email removed from their mailing lists for over 4 years. I have exchanged emails directly with the management, who are apologetic, but apparently have no control or interest in removing people who don't want to received their solicitation. Recently they've switched to a newer spam system that contains a link to unsubscribe. But over a month after using the link I'm still being SPAMED. Enjoy the food, but don't trust Le Relais with your email. Or better yet, patronize any of the wonderful Louisville restaurants that respect their customers.

I'm an out of town visitor, and we went for our anniversary dinner. My husband, who is French and a vegetarian who eats fish, was attracted by both the menu and the location. First, what was excellent: the service (not counting the guy at front-of-house, who was friendly but lacking in finesse), the cocktails (highly recommend the Touch and Go and the Pear Martini), and the bread (hubby went nuts over it; he's very picky about baguettes). The decor and location are charming. I should qualify my rating and review by saying that my husband really liked everything he had very much. It was basically French comfort food, and he was happy with it all. I guess I'm just picky; but I found the menu to be lacking in creativity and the food, while good, to be vastly overpriced. There is nothing wrong with comfort food and good basic cooking, but if you're going to charge that much for it, it should be elevated in some way, and this was not. Our tiny $11 onion tarte was served lukewarm, and the pastry was overdone. The salad special would have been lovely had the persimmons been ripe (they were not). Hubby had the stuffed sole, which was tasty but exactly what you'd get at Legal Seafood; the side dish of gratin dauphinois was indeed a standout. I had the veal shank and it was good --- I especially liked the lemon gremolata --- but it wasn't a standout dish in any way. I've had better for half the price at my favorite neighborhood Greek restaurant. I didn't care for the accompanying white beans, which were mushy and didn't have much flavor. To give credit where credit is due, my husband did like them very much, so perhaps it's an issue of taste. I was so disappointed in the whole meal and in the boring dessert menu that I passed on dessert, but my husband did like his profiteroles. Overall, this was just not the experience I was looking for for a celebratory meal, and for the price I expect much more creativity and better execution. This may just be a matter of taste, so make of it what you will, but I feel pretty bummed to have spent so much money and not enjoyed our anniversary meal.

The atmosphere, the service and most importantly the food were all impeccable. I was surprised to find the place mostly empty on a Saturday but nonetheless the meal was excellent. Both the mussels and escargot were delicious as was the pasta. This place is a real hidden gem for Louisville and worth a visit if you're willing to throw down some money for a nice evening out.

Authentic French food cooked to perfection. I guess the type of cuisine has changed over the years, last time i went i thought it was more bistro style. The dishes was pretty classic, the ingredients used were fresh and top quality. The decor reminds me a French bistro in Paris and the bonus is an outside seating with view on airplanes. The crowd is usually a little older and people tend to dress up to eat in that restaurant.

Delightful Modern French Restaurant in a restored art deco building right on Louisville's Bowman Field (older airport). The building gives it a great setting with a real sort of retro/Casablanca vibe. The food and service offer excellent follow through. Service is, in my experience, relatively flawless. The owners are not French as far as I know but apparently spend plenty of time in France to research ideas. The kitchen produces lovely spins on traditional dishes so this is not one of those frog legs tourist traps. It's not cheap by the area standards but a great place to take a date if you want to impress in a romantic setting. Price point is $50 or more per head with apps, mains, and wine (could go higher if you want to plumb the depths of the wine card).

Great atmosphere and unique location. I always feel like Bogie and Bacall stepping into this place. It's nice to "dress for dinner". Great wine selection. Pear Martini is yum!(touch of champagne seals it). The mussels are a must, tender and flavorful. The escargot is also well done. They have nightly prix fixe during the week, so sign up for their emails if you want off menu selections. The staff is always very friendly and courteous. They do a good job of monitoring your meal timing and don't stack your couses on you. (A pet peeve of mine, when nicer restaurants bring out your follow on courses while you're still eating the prior course.) This is French comfort food, but not too heavy on the sauces. I think their entrees are done very well, but my favorite is just wine with multiple apps to get different flavors without blowing the bank or your gut. Great thing to do is sit on the back deck, have a cocktail, watch the sun set with the airplanes doing touch and go's.

Rip off!!! They had the nerve to offer quail as a special for the night. It was over cooked & small as can be. They charged over $25 for something my two year old can eat & not be full. Let alone a grown man. The french bread was hard as a rock!!! The only thing good was the appetizer. The crème brûlée sugar topping tasted burnt. I know brûlée means burnt, but it tasted burnt. If this is fine dinning, y'all people can keep it.

Been going here for 20+ years! Consistently great food, great service and wonderful European atmosphere. Anthony is a wonderful host!

BRAVO!
