As good as it gets. These donuts are among the things I would want to have with my last meal. Enough said!

YUM! Spaldings is a Lexington tradition. When a robber pistol-whipped the elderly owners, they shut down the original location on Limestone. Eventually a family member built a replica of the original bakery along Winchester Road and began producing the famous donuts again. The donuts are almost like round fritters rather than a cake-like donut (like the donuts at Dunkin Donuts) or a soft donut (like Krispy Kreme). Each donut has its own unique shape with various crusty ridges. Go early: they sell out many days and there is almost always a line.

Tried Spalding's for the first time over the weekend and have to say they make some of the best doughnuts I've had in Lexington.

Best doughnuts I've ever had. Warm, crispy, sugary crust with a wispy, melt-in-your-mouth inside. Worth the wait in line!

I've only had a Spalding's once, and their rough hewn form and virtually crystalline texture kind of fascinated me. (Super crackle-y glaze and outer crust, warm soft donut inside...) Like a good version of a microwave donut? If that's possible? It was very tasty and unique, not like any other donut I've ever had. Tragically, an hour later I got really, really sick. At the time, I chalked this up to it being more grease than I'm used to (I almost never eat fried foods). Later though, I heard from a friend that they are fried in lard? I'm very allergic to pork, which makes me wonder if that rumor is true, but I've no proof that they are fried in lard. Anyone know if this is true? Let me say, that I don't think the average person would experience any problems eating their donuts, fried in lard or not. I just have a super weak stomach when it comes to fried food and am easily overwhelmed by grease. So, if you're a fried food fan, and a donut fan, I think you'll be quite happy here! At any rate, I'm a Doughdaddy's girl...I can eat one of their doughnuts without any greasy remorse...

At 8am on a Sunday morning, the entire city of Lexington seemed to be sleeping. There was not a car on the road and no pedestrians in the streets. Yet Spalding Bakery had a line 10 deep to the door with sleepy people continuously filing in. I think that tells you something about how good the donuts are from here. Some tips for Spaldings: come early, get the original glazed (they were by far the best of all the donuts we tried), bring cash (you don't need a lot as goods are cheap!), & schedule an after donut nap as you will overdose and crash after eating a couple of these.

I remember this was one place that my real estate agent neighbor recommended when I first came to Kentucky as a Freshman undergrad. Apparently this place is privately owned family doughnut shop. The doughnut that my family and I got was pretty good. Do not know what else to really say. For me a doughnut is a doughnut. I'll go to any shop that is near me. Not going all the way down to friggin Winchester Rd because I am too damn lazy. Eh...

  • Gordon F.

Spalding's makes the best donut I've ever eaten. It's a good thing I don't live nearby or I'd probably gain 20 lbs. within a few months. The only other thing that needs to be said is that the service is excellent too.

  • Betty H.

If I have to run 5 miles in order to wolf down ONE Spaulding donut, I would do it. And I do not enjoy running. The donuts here are that good!

    (5)
  • Jesse T.

Delicious real doughnuts, prices were unbelievably affordable. Better wake up early to get in line for this place.

  • Amanda K.

I travel all over the country for my job, and I have tried a lot of donuts claiming to be the best. None of them have even come close to the AMAZING Spalding's Bakery. When I was in line, a guy said that he just got out of the Betty Ford Clinic and this was his first stop. I hope he wasn't going rehab for addiction to donuts.

When Mom heard that my uncle and I were planning to go get donuts early Saturday morning, she proceeded to tell the family about my Donut Man experience (just a reminder: dislocated toe due to my desire to Yelp about the strawberry donuts). She couldn't believe that I would be willing to get up at 5:30am to accomplish this task, but I was planning to no matter what. Fast forward about 4 hours, I admit that I didn't wake up to make the trek (hey it was the morning after the wedding and reception) but I can attest that the donuts are incredible. The donuts are not the perfect round creations that are made by machines. No, these handmade with love. My uncle got the glazed and chocolate varieties. They are definitely worth the early trip to the bakery to guarantee getting them for the bakery closes when the last of the morning batch is sold.

Big and greasy. If this is what they were like years ago when I first had them then my memory is better than reality. When they first reopened several friends brought them fresh and hot to the office and i just couldn't eat them. Satisfy your doughnut Jones at Doughdaddys if you want something ready and hot about when you want it. They cook them every three hours.Glazed is best.

  • Patrick B.

Their doughnuts are amazing. They'll more than likely cause a premature death due to artery clogging, but it's probably worth it. Enjoy!

  • John F.

The donuts here are supposed to be the best in the country or the world or something special like that. I have had them many times and people keep telling me how great they are but I just don't see it. The donuts are average at best they are huge, greasy, and too sweet. I have had better donuts in a lot of places not to many in Lexington but a average donut shop in another town will blow this place away. There are two more problems with this place they are never open and when they are the line is around the corner which I still don't get but to each his own.

  • Dan C.

Every time I come to Kentucky from Chicago I include a stop at Spalding's Bakery. Yes, these are the best dougnuts on the planet. Period.

By far the best donuts ever!! Just remember to take cash as they don't accept credit/debit cards and get in line early.

    (5)
  • Ross M.

Best donuts ever! Only thing I've had that even comes close are Top Pot in Seattle, but these are still way better. They're a unique style. Not the standard airy stuff you get at Krispy Cream that's all sugar. There are more substantial somewhere between a normal and cake donut, but def not cake. Top pot has something that's kinda close called old fashioned. Anyway, not clue what exactly the deal is, but they're awesome. Apparently you have to get there early b/c they often sell out and there's probably going to be a long line.

The best tasting ugly donuts around. Gotta get to this place early though, or the place will be closed

okay, lets get one thing straight: I DO NOT LIKE DOUGHNUTS. they're too sweet, they're dripping with sticky-icky icing and sugar, and they leave your teeth throbbing with sucrose-pains after eating just one. and then the regret...oh, the regret! but i am here to tell you that Spalding's has made a believer out of me. I craaaaave these every time i come home for a visit and my darling mother is nice enough to get up at the crack of dawn to go wait in line for a bag. they are a wonder that i cannot perfectly describe, but i'll give it a go: they are super light and airy, often with little bubbles and pockets scattered throughout the dough. the doughnut itself is actually kinda 'bready'...it doesn't break off in bite-shaped chunks (a la the doughnuts on The Simpsons), it tears away like the inside of a fine European baguette... the glaze LITERALLY melts in your mouth. it is just the right amount of sweet, and oh. my. god. it is amazing. can't wait to go home in 1 week and get a bag of Spalding's!!

    Deliciousness!!!

  • Chris O.

Can I give six stars? Best. Doughnuts. Ever. We had 18 dozen delivered to our wedding, so yes, my wife and I are Spalding's fanatics. Unfortunately, if you eat more than two at a time you will certainly suffer from a doughnut coma for the remainder of the day - followed by a doughnut hangover the next day. But hey, it's well worth it for these puppies. Keep doing what you guys are doing. What do you think about opening another shop in Louisville? On second thought, no, that probably would be bad for my waist line.

  • Clint B.

This may be the best donut I've ever had in my entire life. And for only $.75, are you kidding me!?? This old establishment is a very simple place. There is not much decor and they only have a few items. Also, it is cash-only. It's basically the exact opposite of any hipster donut/coffee shop (e.g. North Lime) The people here seemed pretty nice. Don't quote me on this, but I think the family in front of me in line forgot their cash and was able to work out an IOU plan with the bakery. If so, that's some damn good service. I got the original donut and I was blown away. It looks so simple, but it's so tasty and buttery. I'll be coming back here to fulfill future donut needs and desires. There's so much I need to try...

    (5)
  • Dan F.

Mediocre at best. I have been hearing how wonderful this place is. I guess I was expecting much more than I got. I would not recommend this as a good choice for donuts.

If you haven't tried Spalding donuts then you are missing out on an amazing treat only available here in Lexington. They are made by hand and heavier than traditional yeast donuts. Some people refer to them as "ugly donuts" due their gnarly somewhat misshapen appearance but don't let looks fool you, they are melt in your mouth delicious. They remind me of some Old World German donut. You won't be inhaling 3 or 4 of these like with Krispy Kremes. The Spalding variety are more cast iron than fluff but I mean that in a good way. The original glazed are the absolute best...until you try the chocolate iced glazed! This chocolate temptress ruined me for the regular glazed and I'm afraid there's no turning back at this point! Nine out of ten police officers agree, Best Donuts Ever!!!

    (5)
  • Christine L.

Delicious! Plain glazed fresh and warm, it's just delicious. yes, the lines are long, but worth it! The cream filled one also get huge two thumbs up!

    (5)
  • Kerri D.

While Spalding's certainly has AMAZING glazed and chocolate covered doughnuts... (And when they say chocolate covered, they are not messing around. They basically put chocolate frosting on those hot delicious bad boys OMG.) ... I think the cake doughnuts that they serve does not get the attention they deserve. If you've never tried a Spalding's cake doughnut, you are truly missing out on half of the awesomeness. The cinnamon sugar one is my absolute favorite and I always buy one for myself to eat on the way home in secret along with the half dozen glazed that I get for my boyfriend and myself. Also these are fantastic for early tailgating. I always pick up at least a dozen for morning/noon UK games.

Some of best tasting doughnuts ever! He fresh flavor just melts in your mouth. Would make a stop here any time in town.

    (5)
  • Joseph O.

Sweet googliy moogily, these are the best donuts you'll ever have. They've got eccentric hours, they don't take credit cards, and there's usually a line out the door. That said, they make the most awesome donuts you've ever had in your life. Things this addictive are usually illegal. For the sake of my waistband I only go here on special occasions, but I do so treasure the times I eat these circular treasures.

    (5)
  • Brett N.

Why 5 stars? Because this was my favorite stop in Lexington. --- --- --- These are some of the best donuts you'll ever, EVER have. I will 4 more visits to Lexington this year. You can bet that you'll find me here for each trip. These donuts are just ridiculously delicious. I cannot believe how it's possible to make something so tasty, but I want to live in this bakery. How much do you think rent would be, obviously including that I'll be eating 6 donuts per day, and soon they would have to widen the doorway so I could fit in it.

    (5)
  • John G.

Absolutely the best glazed donuts ever! Super friendly folks who will go well out of their way to start your morning off right! Lots of super tasty baked treats in addition to the awesome donuts!

    (5)
  • Benjamin M.

Proclaiming anything "the best" is an absurd declaration and one that Yelpers must only hand out to the most deserving of establishments. With that said, Spalding's Bakery is cranking out the best dang donuts in the Commonwealth. English words miserably fail to describe the deliciousness that is manufactured each morning within the holy confines of this bakery on Winchester Road. Perhaps the best descriptors are sounds like "MMMMMMM" and "YUMMMMMM" and "AHHHHHHHH." It's easy to see why this bakery caught the attention of the New York Times. Those rich guys on Wall Street only wish they had donuts this good.

    (5)
  • Sharon C.

These are the best donuts I've ever had. I had originally gotten two: one for breakfast the day of, and one for breakfast the next day, but I ended up scarfing both of them down in less than ten minutes because they were just so delicious: warm, a little bit of a crunch on the outside, soft and delicious on the inside. My idea of a perfect donut.

    (5)
  • Katie C.

Seriously these donuts are amazing. My mouth waters thinking about them. If they had tables to sit at, I'd get breakfast there more often- so it's probably good that they don't because I'd be there way too much. It smells heavenly when you walk through the parking lot to the bakery, you are greeted with a smile, definitely one of the best places in town.

    (5)
  • Ross R.

Best donuts around. Always a line out the door.

    (5)
  • J W.

Hands down the best donuts in Lexington, probably all of Kentucky. I have never been disappointed in anything I've purchased there but the simple glazed donut is by far my favorite. You don't have to have fancy flavors and toppings if your doing the basics to perfection and Spalding's does the simple glazed ring donut perfectly. Bonus for having such a nice and pleasant staff.

  • Pamela M.

Oh my, when I tell you they have the best ole fashion donuts, well ........... they do!!! I grew up on these treats as a child and always remember that taste like no other. There are STILL lines out the wazoo waiting to get those donuts. While I was visiting my mother, one morning we were soo worried we would not get any, we dashed outta bed, raced to my car and screeched outta her parking lot....zzzoomm zoom zoom....str8 to Spaldings. Of course there was a line, I almost tripped over my own feet trying to beat the two folks I saw getting outta their cars and heading in too. Finally I am 5th in line with two behind me, I'm watching like a hawk, glariing so hard I bet folks could feel the beams from my eyes focusing and giving them the evil "you better not purchase the last batch" or there will be trouble...:-)))) Moving slowly I get to the counter and YESSSS, there are still donuts. I usually get half a dozen but I got a full dozen to share with my mother. Now I know you're thinking we ripped em' outta the box immediately but we simply mosied on to Starbucks for my mothers latte' and then on home where we then devoured those babys!! One would think I'd know the secret to the taste after all these years and I hadn't had any in over a year sooo.... I believe them to be deep fried and as a hint if you ever happpen upon Spaldings, these donuts must be eaten within two days or after that they are not as tasty. They kinda lose their zing.... Also note that Spaldings is family owned and operated, I think the original members have passed on and the siblings are now running things. The original location was at 6th Street and Limestone forever years ago, but the new location still has the recipe and flavor locked in. Spaldings is a full bakery but I've never tried anything but those donuts:-) *they do not accept credit/debit cards

  • Chad C.

This place is hard to get into. They are usually packed from 6:30am until noon. They make a melt in your mouth cake batter doughnut from an ancient family recipe. That is the true reason people pile in here like sardines. I haven't had anything bad from this place at all. They do make cookies, cakes, cupcakes, brownies, but the doughnuts are what they are known for. It is a very clean and modest little shop located across from the Jiffy Factory. They do not take credit cards or debit cards or checks for that matter. The love and flavor they pack into their sweets are to die for and apparently worth waiting in a line to get your hands on. They will wrap your goodies in a plain white box and tie it with a plane white string. The box and string are the only things plain about this place. The staff are extremely nice and helpful. If you drive by, stop in and grab a dozen then you will see what all of the fuss is about.

Great donuts! I need to remember next time to come here earlier in the morning. There was barely anything left when I got there. There was a long line, but they filled orders quickly. I was still able to get a Carmel iced long donut. It was wonderful! I didn't get a picture because I ate it as soon as I got to my car.

Traditional family run doughnut shop. Best doughnuts in town, hands down! As others have mentioned, they take cash only.

  • Sarah H.

I have never met a donut I didn't like, but I'm pretty sure that I will never meet anything from Spalding's that I won't fall madly in love with. My husband and I got a handful of just the plain old cinnamon and sugar cake donuts, a cinnamon twist, a chocolate cupcake, and a few of the cream-filled donuts. Every single thing was DIVINE. I have a half a mind to drag my husband there again tomorrow just to have more, because I'm pretty sure that I am already an addict. Also, the gentleman that helped us was so amazingly polite and nice, that I'd go back even if the donuts were just mediocre. But the donuts and the service knocked my socks off. GO HERE. It's probably even worth it to be there when they open at the crack of dawn just so you can get one of every single thing they make. (But mainly the donuts. Don't leave without at least one donut).

    (5)
  • Jared M.

No long wait like others have said. Get the glazed doughnut and bring cash. Favorite part is how ugly and non-symmetrical these are. Like the T-800, I'll be back

  • Elaine D.

It's not the Donut Plant in Lower Manhattan, for me the ultimate purveyor of donuts, but Spaldings has very good donuts, light and airy, and priced right. It's a bit out of the way for me, and I'm not usually on that side of town at the donut hour. Pie lover that I am, I asked if they make pies and was told they would do so with a day or two notice, and at a fair price. (Missy's Pies are great, but let's face it, they're expensive, and I refuse to be taken advantage of by a pie bandit.)

    (5)
  • Jamie M.

This place is usual always packed, but it's becuase it's so good! Probably the best bakery in town. They only accept cash so you need to remember that. They are also closed on Mondays and I think Tuesdays. The staff is nice and friendly. Even though the line was out the door, they moved it along pretty quickly. We had the regular glazed and chocolate glazed donuts. As always they were delicious!

    (5)
  • Caroline G.

Probably you can tell by reading all the other reviews that you must stop in here for their original glazed donuts. Just drive here and order a dozen, don't even think about it. Just do it. We stopped by on our way home (8 hour drive) and before I even got to the car, I finished off the blueberry donut (I needed to eat!), and we saved the originals for when we got home. AH SO DELICIOUS, FRIED, DOUGH.

    (5)
  • J B.

Spaldings is so-so. I mean, it must get rave reviews because it's been a local fave for a long time, but the honest truth is that they're just cheaper to get a dozen doughnuts over North Lime Doughnuts, which is better. But if you need a dozen, go to Spaldings cause it'll be cheaper and everyone will love them none the less. and also.... BRING CASH! cards not accepted in this age of Square, which they have yet to discover.

Spalding's has become my go-to donut shop in Lexington. While they don't have very unique or extravagant flavors, everything they make is really good, the prices are extremely low, and I love the people who work there. Despite there often being a line out the door, every staff member is friendly, polite, and a few of them have already learned my 2 year-old's name and chat with him as we order. Their basic glazed donut is my favorite and easily the best glazed donut I've ever had. Parking can be a challenge when they're crowded, and they only take cash, but supporting this business and enjoying their product is well worth the few logistical challenges.

I gave it 3 because the history behind the business is to be respected, since 1929 it's been family ran. I also gave it a 3 because their product in their "cream filled" fare is not homemade by any means. Bulk commercial bought filling takes away from the authenticity of the bakery. The pricing was fair, the service was slow, there wasn't much selection, I'm glad I had cash because cards are not accepted. & they were none too friendly. I wouldn't visit again. I wish them the best however, because I support local & it is family ran! Just don't take shortcuts when it compromises quality.

Spalding's is an incredible little bakery. I love that everything is fresh and made from scratch every morning. It's always busy and they only accept cash as payment so don't make the mistake of having none on you. No one wants to go to the end of the line, especially if they are low on the doughnuts you like. I love supporting local businesses when i can and when it comes to doughnuts, cakes and other pastries Spalding's get's my money. The staff is friendly and the sweets are more than reasonably priced. I'm glad their hours only extend from the early morning until noon because i'd be stopping by every other day if they were open any later. I'd recommend the glazed, chocolate glazed, apple fritters, cinnamon twist and a chocolate cake. I've had a couple of chocolate cakes for my kids birthdays and they are divine!!

Best donuts around. There's a boutique bakeries around that gets all the buzz when it comes to donuts, but Spalding's are better and cheaper. I picked up a couple for me and my wife just yesterday. They don't disappoint. Delicious donuts and cheaper than others. Only downside is they are cash only.

No long wait like others have said. Get the glazed doughnut and bring cash. Favorite part is how ugly and non-symmetrical these are. Like the T-800, I'll be back

Absolutely the best glazed donuts ever! Super friendly folks who will go well out of their way to start your morning off right! Lots of super tasty baked treats in addition to the awesome donuts!

Spalding's is a hidden jewel in Lexington. The most popular treats are the glazed doughnuts which surpass any doughnut I have ever eaten. The cakes and other treats are delicious as well. It is a simple business which focuses on delicious treats without fanfare. Spalding's has been in Lexington for decades and I hope will continue to be around for a long time. Only one caution is to bring cash - it would be disappointing to stand in line only to realize they do not take any other form of payment.

Best donuts ever! My MIL gave us an article about the Kentucky Doughnut trail. We stopped here while on the weekend bourbon trail in Lexington. Get the glazed they were the best and still warm.

This place is food heaven and diet hell. We got 6 donuts (3 glazed, maple iced, pumpkin glazed, and an apple fritter). They just like the ones my Grandma made growing up so I'm pretty sure they fry them in lard. The consistency is light, fluffy, just a little bit oily and delicious. We bought them for Keeneland meet and we ate them all but one (my breakfast today) in about 5 minutes. These blow the water out of anything else I've had before. *Please take note they only take cash, no cards or checks, and there is a usually a line out the door so get there early if you can.

    (5)
  • Mikhal M.

This is probably Lexington's oldest operating bakery. There is ALWAYS a line, even before the place opens and that is for good reason. If you're visiting Lexington and want a doughnut this is the place to be. Try the plain glazed, they're amazing.

Having worked in a donut shop for a few years I feel that I have the qualifications to judge a great donut. Spalding's is as good at it gets! The regular glazed are the stars of the show, they have the perfect combination of what a donut should be; not too sweet and light or too heavy and doughy. There always seems to be a line but it always moves fast and I've never waited for more than 5 minuets. The service is always exceptionally friendly. These blow North Lime out of water, there is no debating about it.

My love affair with Spalding donuts began about 12 months ago. My friends had raved about these amazing treats for years, but I was sure that my dear Lexington pals just loved this place because they didn't know any better. I knew that somewhere in Louisville there had to be donuts that could outshine these small-town circles of dough. Well, it only took one bite to make my urban palate scream hallelujah and my smugness melt as quickly as the dough did in my mouth. Heaven in a bag--that's the best way to describe them. There's honestly nothing else like Spalding donuts in this state. They are not pretty and there are no perfectly shaped circles like you find at Krispy Kreme. But what they lack in beauty, they more than make up for in over-the-top, hard-to-describe goodness. Spalding is fried dough at its best. Lightly crispy on the outside, soft and silky but also strangely dense on the inside. These donuts melt in your mouth even as you chew. They are even good hours later. In fact, one friend claims they stay fresh so long they can last through a nuclear winter. You need to plan ahead if you want to take some home. Fans line up long before the doors open. When they run out of something it's out for the day, so don't wait too long. Spalding Bakery is a Lexington landmark and the family-run business is operated pretty much the same way it has for decades. They don't take credit cards, so have some cash ready. Not being an early bird, I love the fact that you can place an order ahead of time and they will have it ready for you when you arrive, even if it's noon. I've heard rumors that week-old Spalding donuts make an amazing base for bread pudding. I am determined to test this urban legend very soon.

This place is old school in a good way. Hand tied string around the boxes of delicious, fresh donuts. Plain raised donuts are amazing! Go here!

Ugh, it's going to have to be 3 strikes and you're out for me. Not for the quality of the doughnuts, b/c I'm sure that is unparalleled, but b/c of the difficulty in actually BUYING one, especially if you are a Lexington native who ONLY gets to come home around the holidays. It seems as if even if you live in Lexington, MOST of the time, getting a doughnut, even during the published business hours is a crapshoot. But 3 years in a row, I've gotten home to find out that they are closed the entire week I'm here, and this morning, they were there and the lights were on but I guess just doing paperwork or something. I think I'm going to file Spaldings into the "nice childhood memories" box and pretend that they are just gone because nothing should be THIS hard to buy, no matter how tasty they are. I was last able to buy a Spalding's doughnut in 2010, probably b/c Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were on a Saturday and Sunday, so my estimation, I'll have to wait another 3 years until the MIGHT actually be open during their Wed-Sunday business hours. No thanks. So if you are passing through Lexington or read about them in the NY Times, be forewarned that you probably have a 98% chance of leaving their disappointed and empty-handed. Thanks for the memories Spaldings.

The doughnuts have to be eaten to be believed. Nothing better than a fresh glazed doughnut hot out of the oven.

Raised donuts are very good. A bit greasy so 2 is a good limit. Didn't care for the sour cream ones.

Totally worth a stop in Lexington if you are on a road trip! Donuts are to die for, and it was great to be in a legit bakery where things are made by hand. Weather was horrible, but the bakery was still packed. Look forward to my next trip to Kentucky - you can bet that will include a trip to Spaldings!

You know a place is great when there's a line of 12-15 people before they open and once you get in there's 20 or more in line as you are leaving. That's the way it is at Spalding's. This morning, we got there 15 minutes before it opened and we still were not the first in line. (I think there would have been more if we hadn't lost an hour due to daylight savings time last night.) Half the people I heard talking were from Louisville (75 miles away) and places other than Lexington. Someone convinced them they HAD to go to Spalding's, and I'm sure they were not disappointed. Everything is made fresh with love and care. The glazed donuts are my favorite. The texture is what makes them so extra special...a little crunch-chewy on the outside with the perfect amount of glaze, and soft aerated fluffy perfectly cooked dough inside. We also got cinnamon-sugar cake donuts, chocolate glazed and a cream horn. I took a dozen glazed to Cincinnati a few weeks ago for a reunion with my college BFFs and everyone had a fit over them. Is there a bad donut at Spalding's? I haven't found it yet, but I'll keep looking. ;0) (Cash only so hit the ATM first.) P.S. My husband just read my post and added, "The only bad donuts you'll find there are the ones you'll find laying on the sidewalk from the competition driving by and throwing theirs at Spalding's, out of jealousy."

This is what it used to be like to go to a storefront and get good service and good product. You don't like that they are greasy? Well then....may I suggest that you shouldn't be eating doughnuts. These are good. This felt like an ole time bakery, they bring them out from the back and no two look alike. Yes, they are heavy so 2 were enough for me. But they were nice and crisp on the outside and had great texture and softness on the inside. The glazed doughnut rivaled any I've had before. I also got a 'butter bar'. Have no idea what it was but it was real good. Kinda like a blondie I guess. Great stuff....wish there were more places like this.

Best doughnuts I've ever had. Warm, crispy, sugary crust with a wispy, melt-in-your-mouth inside. Worth the wait in line!

  • Stella J.

Eh...

Spalding's makes the best donut I've ever eaten. It's a good thing I don't live nearby or I'd probably gain 20 lbs. within a few months. The only other thing that needs to be said is that the service is excellent too.

Go here!

Some of best tasting doughnuts ever! He fresh flavor just melts in your mouth. Would make a stop here any time in town.

Eh...

Spalding's makes the best donut I've ever eaten. It's a good thing I don't live nearby or I'd probably gain 20 lbs. within a few months. The only other thing that needs to be said is that the service is excellent too.

If I have to run 5 miles in order to wolf down ONE Spaulding donut, I would do it. And I do not enjoy running. The donuts here are that good!

Delicious real doughnuts, prices were unbelievably affordable. Better wake up early to get in line for this place.

  • Kristen W.

Best doughnuts I've ever had. Warm, crispy, sugary crust with a wispy, melt-in-your-mouth inside. Worth the wait in line!

    (5)

Every time I come to Kentucky from Chicago I include a stop at Spalding's Bakery. Yes, these are the best dougnuts on the planet. Period.

By far the best donuts ever!! Just remember to take cash as they don't accept credit/debit cards and get in line early.

Best donuts ever! My MIL gave us an article about the Kentucky Doughnut trail. We stopped here while on the weekend bourbon trail in Lexington. Get the glazed they were the best and still warm.

  • Nancy B.

This is probably Lexington's oldest operating bakery. There is ALWAYS a line, even before the place opens and that is for good reason. If you're visiting Lexington and want a doughnut this is the place to be. Try the plain glazed, they're amazing.

  • Robert M.

  • Stella J.

    (5)
  • Michelle H.

    (5)

Absolutely the best glazed donuts ever! Super friendly folks who will go well out of their way to start your morning off right! Lots of super tasty baked treats in addition to the awesome donuts!

Get there early because the line goes out the door!! Daily donuts apple fritters filled donuts and cakes. The apple fritters were good bit not too much apple tho, the crime filled donuts were great! Get in line and look and be prepared to order quickly!! 4 fruit filled danish 3 apple fritters, 2 creme filled donuts and 2 creme filled long things were 18.00 cheap! Only cash!!!!

This is by far the best guilty pleasure (as far as food goes) that Lexington has to offer!

Go here!
