Petro's is near Kroger in Tate's Creek Centre, sandwiched between fast food places. We went through the drive-thru, so I can't speak to the atmosphere. I wanted to try it for a while, but it does always look empty. I got a medium "lite" chili with reduced fat sour cream and cheese, my husband got a gourmet pulled pork petro. I liked it a lot, it was good chili fast. It's a good alternative to Gold Star, actual chili with beans instead of chili as a topping. My husband was underwhelmed. It's pricey compared to the area (again, fast food), but I was fine with that as I think the quality is a little better and the portion was fair.

Food is ok but there's no situation where I'm paying five bucks for plain old child dog ever again. Not thinking this over priced joint will last

First time there on the first day and the food was awesome! I will be a long time customer of this place. Can't wait to try the other chili offers and the hot dogs. Keep up the good work !

My husband and I were so excited to see a Petro's in Lexington. We first discovered Petro's at Bonnaroo music festival in 2013. During the festival we would visit the food truck everyday at least once to get a hint of orange ice tea. From then on we have loved Petro's Chili and Chips and had made a point to stop every time we passed through Knoxville TN. Now we don't even have to drive a mile away to visit one of our favorites! Although this review is a bit late we just want to say it is worth the money and time to visit petros. The hint of orange iced tea is a must have!

This was actually my second visit to Petro's. I'd forgotten my phone the first visit and I really hadn't planned on coming back becuase of the first visit. I was under "wow'ed" with what I ordered. The first visit I had the chicken nachos. It was a small serving and for the price is rather go to Shamrocks and get my 4 times more of a serving than what I got here. I decided to give it a second try with just me And my daughter. We had the kids Mac n cheese meal and I only had the Petro's bake potato and a drink. It was almost 12.00. The baked potato was good and huge, but for 6.00 it should include the drink or a side. It is a change of pace, but a bit overpriced for what you get.

To put it simply, I am not a fan and I will not go back. We decided to give this place a try, but sadly we left underwhelmed and felt like we spent too much. The chili cheese dogs, while not bad, were $5 each. We also ordered Petro Nachos to split. The chips were stale, the toppings were mediocre at best. We didn't even finish them. What made the experience worse was the fact that the girl at the register could tell we've never been to the restaurant before but still offered no help; she just stared at us while we looked at the menu. You may have a better experience than I did, so give it a try at your own risk.

I really, really have tried hard to like this place. The first few off experiences I had, I attributed to grand opening kinks that would be eventually worked out. It seems, months after opening, however, that they aren't going to get it together. The surly teenage employees, the relatively overpriced menu, and the horrible atmosphere are just too much for me to overcome in order to get their food (which is actually not bad). The two dueling TVs blaring are set to two different channels - ESPN and Fox News. How wonderfully nauseating for a dining experience. There are only two enormous booths and most of the rest of the seating is set up cafeteria-style, with long rows of uncomfortable tables and chairs. I can get surly teenage workers at McDonalds for half the price. Thanks, but no thanks. I can see why I've frequently been one of the few people here.

The chili is good, but not great. When I eat here I like to get the Petro's hot dog. It's good, but pretty pricey for a hot dog. The potatoes are good too! My kids like the nachos. We always have good service and everyone is friendly. It's different and that's what I like about it!

  • Brian K.

My wife and I were first time patron's today. I'll start with "WOW" on the size of the potatoes. Those things are really big. My wife had hers with chicken and it was great. I had the medium original Petro. I had never had corn chips in my chili. I'm a convert now. I took a photo of mine. I had mine without sour cream. The chili was the right amount of spice and flavor. Another benefit is that most of their food is gluten free. WE WILL BE BACK SOON.

I'll be honest, my first visit here wasn't the best. I wasn't very hungry and I ordered a salad. Not my favorite salad in the world, but hey, it's called Petro's Chili and Chips. Not Petro's Salads. I resolved to keep my peace and try it again some other time. I came back today and got the Petro's Buffalo Chicken Gourmet Chili over chips, which is supposedly one of their best selling items. I asked for my ranch on the side (you could also get bleu cheese or nothing) just so I could get a better look at what I ordered and assess the spiciness level. The buffalo sauce is infused into the chili and dang, it was spicy! I'm glad I had the ranch there to cool it down. In some respect, I was a little annoyed at the tall bowl because I wasn't able to mix my chili up very well. But in the long run, I kind of appreciated it because every bite was a little bit different. My wife got the BBQ Pulled Pork Chili and enjoyed it quite thoroughly, especially on the recommendation to put the BBQ sauce on the side. It made the chili a kind of strange sickly sweet, but the pork was plentiful and a welcome addition to the chili. The hint'o'orange iced tea is excellent here as well. I strongly recommend it along with an orange slice and their nugget ice. A little expensive for my liking ($18 for us both) but definitely something different and very tasty. We will be back!

Underwhelming! This place will be closed soon if a few critical issues aren't addressed. Mainly, the atmosphere in the restaurant, and the complete lack of good customer service. The food isn't bad. It's chili, you can't really mess that up. But what should be a somewhat simple and enjoyable dining experience is instead a sad and stressful one. No music, unfriendly staff, two tvs on different channels fighting for your attention, it's just awful. Would not recommend to anyone, unless they are in dire need of a chili fix.

Tried it for the first time and ordered the medium Petro chilli. It was actually quite good. The lemonade was tasty, and the service was great. I don't know why this place isn't packed for lunch. Very affordable!

I tried Petro's for the first time today. I wasn't sure what to expect and didn't get my hopes up too high. I got the small veggie chilli with every topping offered..sour cream, tomatoes, green onions, cheese, chips, olives, and jalapenos. The service was faster than Mcdonald's drive thru. I placed my order and walked to my seat..and the server brought over the food. I thought the small would be enough but I will definitely order a medium next time. I LOVED the concoction of all the toppings together! I was so sad to reach the bottom. I would have liked more chips and I will ask for extra next time. I can't believe someone said Gold Star is better..I do love the finely shredded cheese at Gold Star but I will gladly drive from Hamburg to Tates Creek to have Petro's any day over Gold Star..which is 5 mins from me. I tried the orange tea and wasn't a fan..might be an acquired taste. It wasn't awful but it wasn't very sweet..I had hoped it would have been sweeter. I can't wait to go back again!!

I'd say this is somewhere in between Taco Bell and Qudoba. I was not real impressed with the nachos but will go back to try the baked potatoes and the chili.

My family sent for the first time today, AWESOME! while I was there I thought the hot dogs were going to be small like at the gas station. wrong! It was huge, perfect temp., roasted well, not dry, plenty of chili & cheese. I needed a fork to get the extra. the nachos were better than Taco Bell's old Nachos Bell Grande with gobs of sour cream with plenty of other toppings. their chili flavor was on the money and not like the sweet, girly chili Gold Star serves. The lemonade was awesome and I tried the tea. Never had orange in my tea, it was great! Keep on what you are doing, don't change. I can't wait for them to start catering. my office will freak.

  • Rick F.

Had the petro with pasta black olives and jalapenos. Friend had the chili cheese dog. My petro was stone cold and very little chili at all, mostly sour cream and mac noodles. My friends chili cheese dog had more chili than the petro. Chili has zero flavor the Nathan hotdog must be the frank because it is fat and gritty. I could go to Kroger and buy an eight pack of Kosher Nathan's hotdogs at the same price. Will not be back.

Excellent chili for a great price! Several different options for your chili. The tea with a hint of orange is ok but a little weak for my taste.

  • Nicholas M.

Pretty pricey for some mediocre chili served on some soggy Fritos. They have a bunch of different kinds of bowls you can get; I had the pulled pork Petro, and it was underwhelming.

  • Lola L.

I only wish there were an option to give NO STARS. Underwhelmed is likely the best word I can use to describe the food; I'd describe the service as "cloudy", if that makes any sense to you. The kids' meals are a joke. Not going back, too expensive for paste like chili and soggy/stale corn chips.

Been eager to try this restaurant since it is the first of its kind in Lexington. Tried it yesterday and it was fair, at best. I had the medium Petro with pasta as my main dish. The chili came with a good deal of cheese and sour cream on it. I mixed the concoction together and it was pretty good. There was not much "pop" to the chili at all. The original was extremely mild (which I am ok with). The problem with all of the cold toppings on top was that once they were mixed together the chili was lukewarm and not temperature hot at all. For a side I decided to get the chips and queso. I was delighted with this option. A decent sized bag of chips and two small cups of queso. There was plenty of cheese dip for all the chips! I thought that was a great value for only $1.29. I got the hint o' orange tea to cap off my meal. The sweetened version was tasty, though a little different if you have strictly been used to lemon in your tea. I would certainly recommend the pre-sweetened over the unsweetened version. The unsweetened version was not very good. Worth a try for a change of pace, but don't expect to be blown away.

Ok, tried this new place on Sat 9/13/14. Sorry to say disappointed. I got Chili with pasta and wife chili cheese dog. 2 drinks. WAY to expensive first of all, and taste was poor. Nothing like normal chili. Bland and no chili taste and most of all was crammed full of pasta noodles. Hardly any meat at all. Try to find something good to say but the business model they have is lacking to say the least. Hoped for something new around here but this just not good .

    (1)
  • Charlie L.

Saying "meh" would be generous. The signature chili is bland and dinner for a family of four was almost 30 bucks. You can get pretty much the same bowl of chili at Wendy's for a couple of bucks and save some scratch. Decent soft serve ice cream with the kids meals. We probably won't be back.

  • Gene T.

Really wanted to like this place, but turns out there is a reason the "chili and chips" restaurant concept isn't more popular. First, and most importantly, the chili tastes just like a can of Hormel chili and the chips are straight from a bag. Since almost all dishes use these two ingredients as a base, you can guess how everything tastes. We ordered loaded nachos and two orders of the original Petro, one with chicken. Blah. Neither my wife or I finished either. We looked at each other and said at same time, "I don't ever want to come here again." If their chili even had as much flavor as Goldstar's Tex Mex, it might be tolerable. It's too bad for Petro's they are about a block from Taco Bell. Go there. Spend half of what Petro's will cost you.
