Maria's Kitchen looked like a good place to go in lexington, looking for a lot of flavor, home cooking and local color. Well Maria's was the place. It took me awhile to find it and it was only after I gave up that I stumbled upon it. Now if that sounds odd it was. I was giving up, and providence led me here! The place is a dive. out door only, order at the window, order in spanish really helps. Luckily I can do that. Well the patrons were eating and waiting to order as I was looking over the big menu on the window. A young man started chatting with me and wanted to help me understand what to order and how to order and that he had been coming here for years and how that I would be coming back and on and on. I listened and thought, loyal patrons, that is good, very good. Well I ordered a couple of burritos. Judging by the low cost I figured I could taste the chili verde and the asada burritos. All I can say is good call. The Tortillas are home made! Very nice. The meats and sauces are full of flavor and the green salsa in the squeeze bottle on the tables sets it off very well. I will be coming back, but when? I live a long way away! Lucky You if you are in Lexington and want a nice simple inexpensive meal, this is the place.

Yeah, yeah, you know it's a hole in the wall... so know that ahead of time that it's not a glitzy and glamorous restaurant. It is however a spot to find authentic Mexican food. It's in an unassuming location, directly across the street from the sketchy Dollar Tree and a few door down from the famous Willies. It sort of reminds me of the old burger places, where you order at the window and sit down at the outdoor seats. That's right, they don't have inside seating. They do have a covered area with three large tables. When you're ready to order, you have to ring the bell, otherwise they think you're still scoping out the menu. The menu had me a bit overwhelmed when I spotted things like tongue. I decided to keep it simple... I ordered a chicken burrito and added beans for an extra $.25 I didn't want to be too boring, so I added a chicken taco. It was about half of the size of the burrito... the prices reflected that though. As I waited at the table, for my to go order, I watched them call out and hand out several entrees that I now have on my radar. I'm visual... if I can't see it or at least a picture of it first, I probably won't order it. I won't ever order tongue though.

Great, authentic Mexican on the cheap. Good for a lunch stop or an informal, townsy dinner.

The service is great, the portions are large. I would recommend this place to anyone. We eat there at least 2 times per week. Hands down the best Mexican food in Lexington.. Period

Maria's is a little hole-in-the-wall dive that I heard serves authentic Mexican. I got three chicken tacos for a good price with a good amount of food for my money. I spent $7-something for those and a Mexican Coke (sugar, not HFCS). I thought the food was okay, but it wasn't great like I had been led to believe. The main problem was that the tacos were very dry. They come with shredded chicken, cilantro, and onions. There are two kinds of hot sauce on the side, salsa verde and a red sauce, as well as limes. I used the salsa verde but the red sauce was too spicy for me. A friend of mine made sure to get sour cream with his order and he shared; it definitely improved the tacos. I recommend you get sour cream because, even with the lime juice, they almost would have been too dry to be edible. The flavor was a little plain, even with the salsa verde and the sour cream. It wasn't bad, just simple. I will eat here again because they had lots of items on their menu. I might try a burrito or gordita next, and a vegan friend of mine has had good luck getting cactus here.

By far my favorite place to eat in all of Lexington. There is no comparison with it comes to Mexican food, and definitely none when it comes to bang for your buck. They hand make all of their tortillas, and slow cook their meat. It's best to get there around lunchtime because everything is still fresh and hot, and sometimes they'll run out by dinner. Get pork w/ green sauce burritos, and that's obvious.

I have tried the steak gordita, steak tacos, and Menudo. They all lacked flavor. The salsas were not spicy. The meat also seemed dry. My wife is from Mexico and we recently moved from Houston. It is hard to find food that compares to either place here in Lexington. This place is fairly authentic, but it just isn't that flavorful.

Located off North Broadway, it's easy to miss if you aren't looking. There are a couple of tables outside the ordering window, but it's definitely a take-out kind of place. The prices are really cheap, but the food is not. Everything is light years better than you would get from your local Mexican eatery, made to order. The tongue was fantastic, soft and full of flavor without being overcooked. The shredded beef and barbacoa were also fantastic. The only thing I disliked was my chicken taco, which was kind of dry and didn't seem to have any flavor to it at all. Still, everything else was good enough to make up for it. They provided lots and lots of hot sauce, both red and green, as well as limes. For $30 we had enough for at least 4 meals. When I am looking for Mexican food again, I'm pretty sure this is the place I'll be going.

Maria's is great. The pork with red sauce is amazing. The burritos are not traditional burritos they are more like carrburritos, which are thinner and have only two ingredients, meat and sauce. The steak tacos are so fresh with cilantro and onions. What makes this place so great is the slow cooked meats and homemade tortilla shells.

Everything I ordered was delicious. Their carne asada was quality meat (not mystery meat), tasty beans, and their red/green salsas were fresh and had a great taste to them. Definitely worth trying out and I will go back when I'm in town!

This little hole in the wall restaurant is easy to overlook, but I definitely recommend taking a closer look. The menu is available in both Spanish and English. The staff is very friendly, although usually quite busy (understandably). Their tortas and burritos are both very reasonably priced, and stinking delicious. Either their carnitas (steak) or carnitas (pork) are great choices, but I heartily recommend the lingua (beef tongue). It may sound scary, but trust me, you'll love it. Tortas do include avocado, so be aware if you aren't a fan. Also, be sure to try the red and green sauces. If you get to-go, they actually give you little cups to take with. They also have both Jarritos and Mexican (i.e. cane sugar) Coke available in bottles. I'm still building up the courage to try their menudo, but it's coming, trust me.

You cannot ask for better Mexican food in Lexington. Rivals any of the taco trucks in Los Angeles, and the staff is sweet to the max. If you don't like their pork, you are a sociopath.

My new favorite taco joint in Lexington. Very authentic Mexican street tacos, my wife and I arrived hungry and were both fed for under $10. Amazing prices!! I had Carne Asada Tacos and a Pork Gordita. I loved the Pork and the delicious red sauce. I've lived in Lexington now for almost 2 years and I can't believe I haven't been here sooner, an absolute must visit place if you want Cheap & Tasty Mexican food.

Best Mexican food in town! This place although doesn't look as nice or fancy as other restaurants in the area, has the best food as it is home made. The gorditas are to die for! Also the 3 leeches cake is the best

Had the chicken flautas. (#19 on the menu) Excellent and authentic. Comes with a side of rice. They are going start being closed on Sunday soon. Which is ok, everyone needs a day.

OMG. Maria's. What else can I say? I go at least once a month, and I always tell myself I'm going to finally branch out and get something other than burritos, but I can never do it. These burritos are life changing. Personally, it's the homemade tortilla that does it for me. Unwrapping the still-warm tin foil to bite into the delicious chewiness of this miracle tortilla is like experiencing nirvana. My favorite is the poblano pepper one: the perfect amount of heat and gooey cheese. What more could you ask for? I don't know how they do it, but all I can say is this Maria: "You rock, don't ever change." FYI: The burritos are on the smaller side, and not stuffed to max capacity like Chipotle burritos, so I can usually eat one and a half or two and call it a day. Suffice it to say that I never regret ordering two.

If you're looking for inexpensive, authentic Mexican food, look no further. This tastes just like the food my husband grew up with in central Mexico. The aguas frescas are all delicious. We like the carne asada the best, but the cactus and adobada are also fantastic. Just keep in mind there is only limited outdoor seating, so plan on taking it home if the weather isn't nice.

The beef tongue tacos are amazing! The pork with red sauce is excellent also. Cheap and authentic, I love it. Don't forget a Mexican Coke.

I freakin' love this place! Don't be fooled by the outside. The food is great. Sometimes they are busy due to call in orders, so go ahead and do the same.

I live in California and I've had my fair share of Mexican food. I can safely say this belongs amongst the best hole-in-the-wall Mexican I've ever had. Homemade corn AND flour tortillas. Cheap prices. Great horchata. This is danky, delicious Mexican food at its finest.

Carne asada tacos very good and quick! Comes with limes & red & green sauces. I took out.

My partner and I love Maria's Kitchen. We usually stop by for lunch every Saturday. The food is fresh and hot. They have menus in both English and Spanish. The abodado (spelling? Spanish for "marinated") pork dishes are excellent as is the asada verde. Their chips and salsa are also really good. Try them with a Mexican Coke made of more sugar than the US high fructose corn syrup version. I will say, however, that I've not been as impressed with their fried foods like the flautas and chile relleno. They lack flavor and taste mostly like fried dough. Instead, try their fajitas and asada verde platters that are plenty big enough for two people. Sitting at one of the outdoor tables with other people may seem intimidating at first, but in all my experiences there people either keep to themselves enjoying their food or friendly. Overall, Maria's Kitchen is a great, local, relaxed place. Give it a try!

Three stars because the food is good, but please look at their health dept. score and details before you eat there. I won't say what's on it but it might change your mind. They lost points for one specific item that would change the mind of probably 99% of people if they actually read it. But the food is tasty, so decide for yourself.

Inexpensive. Delicious. Homemade. Authentic. Friendly. The burritos with red sauce were amazing! The shredded pork was wonderful and the pablano cheese gorditas are fantastic.

Stopped by for lunch. I had the red enchiladas with chicken. 4 enchiladas comes with rice, lettuce, and tomato on a real plate. Good stuff. My wife had two tacos--one barbacoa and one steak. She said they rocked. All this for $11--bingo. Will be back.

Not only the best Mexican food in town, but the only place I've found that is actual Mexican food in town!!! Will be going back 2-3 times a week!

Small takeout place but everything is fresh and made to order. The homemade tortillas and gorditas are jam packed with meat. I really enjoyed the barbacoa and al pastor. The chile rellano did not come with any red sauce but it was still delicious. They also make the best tres leche cake in town.

This little shack is takeout only (unless you want to sit at an outdoor picnic table in a semi-sketchy neighborhood). But the food is awesome and the prices are very fair! Best Barabacoa I have ever had. Love their hot sauces. Very unique, smaller burritos. (Poblano & cheese, beef & potato) Above average beans and rice. If you like home-cooked Mexican, you gotta try this place.

My hubby was hankering for something sweet in the middle of Lexington, Kentucky and naturally craved TRES LECHES CAKE. Maria's version is quite tasty and not too soppy. Chased it all down with a good ole MEXICAN COKE...love the clean, refreshing sensation of a cane sugar soda pop. Try it if you want to avoid that syrupy sugar burn you get in your throat from regular Coke.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
