Charlie browns is the best bar/restrauant I have been too. When you walk in it is very dark. Bookshelf's with book on the walls. Couches, tables, and chairs everywhere. Food is delicious, we had the wings and they are the best wings I have had. Cheeseburger, lots of fries. Reuben sandwich couldn't get enough, delicious. Atmosphere was and is great. The couches are very comfortable. Highly recommend. Oh and the patio outback is very nice lots of TVs. You might see me there as well.

Food was good but service was outstanding. I went with my Newfoundland. The staff gave her treats and took her picture for their Facebook page. We'll be back next time we're in the area!

It is what it is. A cozy bar with couches and fireplaces and a juke box. Solid Bloody Mary. If you order the Caesar salad with Romaine lettuce as the menu states and blackened tuna, expect mixed salad (iceberg) with Cesar dressing and breaded tuna. Burger was cold, too. Maybe don't go with culinary expectations.

With the quality of food, service, and beer selection, I feel I am being generous with this review. The food leaves everything to be desired, especially in flavor. You may also have to wait about 30 minutes before getting your TV dinner quality meal out to you. The beer is very standard, at least they had West 6th or there would have been no beer for me. The servers are not very attentive, I drank my beer and a whole glass of water, waited 20 minutes and then got a refill. Really the only thing that would keep me coming there is the environment. It is dimly lit, the warm fireplaces casting a glow on the room, and best of all, books covering nearly every wall. It is as though you are in your own private library in your house. The chairs with their vintage seat covers and couches throughout the place give it a homey feel that is unique here. To get those 3 stars, this place needs to stop using frozen food and make something that has real flavor, increase the beer selection past the "American" lagers, and finally, train your staff on the importance of customer service, to not sit down on the job, to not be on their phones and to not be more interested on talking to their coworkers while completely ignoring the people you pay them to serve.

I've visited CB's for dinner, for drinks, and for both. The food is good and reasonably priced. Last thing I ordered was the Caesar Salad with Blackened Tuna. It was cooked perfectly, a large portion, and flavorful. But honestly, when I go to CB's it's more for the ambiance than anything else. Perfect place to settle in and spend a low-key evening. It's very dark and intimate with book lined walls, worn sofas (just don't think about it) and a lovely fire in colder months. Service is always adequate. The back patio is nice too and lined with plants to hide the adjoining gravel parking lot/alley. Sure, there are better bars/restaurants in Lex, but if you've never been it's def a one of a kind place and worth stopping in.

What a fun and comfortable place! Couch filled, lighting like a winter cabin and a great menu with great service! If I was a UK student is live here and study next to the bookshelves on an overstuffed couch listening to a steady stream of music and sampling the bar are menu! Do yourself a favor and drop on with your in Lexington!

Love this little pub, so cute and warm and inviting, makes it seem so romantic. I love this little warm hearted place. Pretty good prices, with a wonderful selection of appetizers, food, & a nice drink selection as well. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!! Thumbs up

This place was really freaking cool. I enjoyed that it had non traditional seating...mostly couches and things. I even ended up sitting on the fireplace which was kinda fun. Place was dark and a bit loud, but just quiet enough so that you could still have a conversation. The only problem with this layout is that sometimes it was really hard for the server to get to us. Nothing like having a stranger hand you your food. But truthfully that isn't that big of a deal. The food was great. We started out with an order of hot pepper cheese which was amazing. Dip that sucker in ranch and let your tastebuds go wild. They disappeared from our table pretty quickly. My Black and Bleu burger was delicious. It was dripping with blue cheese dressing (which made for some nice fry dipping juice) and was quite cheap too. I ate it, if you can call it that...more like inhaled it, I loved it. The only thing that didn't really do it for me was the Jukebox. I know people like that a lot...but watching people put dollar after dollar in that thing was like...really? I mean when it stopped there was no music at all. No background something or other...just no music. Just...not my style. I didn't end up going for any of the pitchers of mixed drinks...but I'll admit they looked tempting. Too bad I was driving.

I love this place! I live in California but whenever I come to visit Lexington I always make sure to stop here. HeThey have great burgers and sandwiches for decent prices and a very cool patio in the back. Their drinks are also reasonably priced. I highly reccomend the Reuben sandwich or chicken tender salad!

This place was a college staple for me when I was at UK. Good drink prices and even better food. Every time I visit, I can't leave without getting their fried cheese balls. So good! The patty melt is also great. I love the old house/dark library vibe it has. Very different from other places in Lexington. Prices are affordable. I would recommend it to anyone in the area.

My experience didn't include alcohol which seems to be the key to the five star reviews on here. I've had this place bookmarked for quite awhile so I had been looking forward to checking it out and tonight I did just that. The decor and atmosphere were just as many described on here, dark and different with the couches and books. One thing I will add is that it has a strange smell...I assume caused by the hundreds of old books. I ordered the veggie burger which was nothing other than a thin frozen Morningstar patty on a bun. I opted for the broccoli and cheese soup but it hardly had any broccoli in it. On the menu the burgers were priced at $7.80 but the bill/check said $8.50. No big deal...just an observation. The soda machine was broken which wasn't a big deal either....had the food been good, I may have given it another shot.

The inside of this place is really neat and not what you'd expect. The bookshelves filled with books, couches, and fireplace just add to the cozy charm. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was quite tasty.

They make their own salsa, very good. Service was great, got turkey burger, lots if flavor. The place has tons of character, personality, and "charm". Great for locals but a must for those passing thru Lexington!

I have been going to Charlie Browns for over 20 years. My husband and I have had many dates there and we have been married for 15 years this coming July! Its the food and the atmosphere and the warmth feeling you get when you enter the door. Love the food, couches, fireplaces and most of all the wall to wall books.

I love this restaurant. I always make sure to eat here when I'm in my hometown. I love the atmosphere especially, and everyone should come here just to hang out and get a drink and listen to their awesome jukebox.

Best wings I've ever had in the United States. Dipping sauce (dressing) is made on site using buttermilk (I think) and a "special formula" that our waiter didn't act like he was allowed to detail. As long as it's not like Eric Cartman's burgers from South Park, I think we'll all be aight. Juicy chicken, rich wing sauce, rich ranch (or ranch-tasting) dressing. Cool atmosphere with all the books on the shelves and seemingly every Lexingtonian packed within to enjoy a few brewskies and chill out. Excellent service. This joint is legit!

One of my favorite little places to get a bite to eat. Good food and incredible atmosphere. It doesn't seem like a bar or restaurant. The couches, fireplaces, stained-glass windows, eccentric coffee tables, easy chairs and walls full of books give it more of a "dad's basement" atmosphere. The food is good. It's not unearthly or exceptional, but pretty dang good bar-type food. It's reasonably priced, slightly above fast food in prices, and notably above that in quality. The patty melt is my personal favorite. It's really wonderful to be able to go there in wintertime and sit by the fireplace on a couch and cuddle up with your date and have a warm meal before going back outside. There is a patio out back that's decent, but I go for the ambiance inside. There is even an old vintage "cocktail table" style Ms. Pac Man machine in the corner, which somehow goes along with the whole place. There is a vintage jukebox near the bar that is stocked with lots of "oldies" from the 60's and 70's that is free to use. Service is decent, always on-the-ball with regard to keeping drinks filled and being quick about taking orders. Overall, a highly recommended place for a comfortable, casual meal.

Charlie Brown's is cool.........enough said review over!! Ok I guess I'll explain why I liked it so much. First off the atmosphere is great. There's no where to sit that's not a couch, and not nasty bar couches either. They were comfortable, clean, and easy to sit and eat on. The bookshelves that line the walls and the darkness of the space make it almost feel as if your in someone's cozy den. Next.....liter drinks. They have 10+choices for the liter including white Russian, Bahama mama, and fuzzy navel. We chose the fuzzy navel, it wasn't too strong but it was delicious. When you think chicken fingers you usually think breaded and fried, but Charlie Brown's has grilled chicken fingers!! Perfect for trying to stay semi healthy. The rest of the menu looked delicious too so I will definitely be back to try the veggie burger.

Charlie Brown's is one of those restaurants that bases its appeal almost entirely on its atmosphere. It's a dark space, with books lining the walls and fireplaces blazing in wintertime. You can have your lunch while sitting on a comfortable couch or armchair instead of at a table if you prefer, and the service is typically quick and friendly. The free jukebox can be fun as well, if you're into the older music that's loaded into it. That being said, the food ranges from average to slightly below average. It's your typical American menu, served complete with lots of grease and low-quality ingredients. The drinks (soft drinks included) are also tiny and require frequent refills. Overall, it's an interesting place to visit if you are looking for a "different" sort of dining experience, but it's really better for a quick lunch and drink than a full dinner.

When coming in through the door, my first impression of the place was that of a "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride at Disneyland. The wooden walls and the dim lightning made it feel as if I would shortly be going on a ride. Sofas, a book shelf, and oldies music definitely highlighted the theme even more. It was a very laid back experience and I definitely give it props for that. Taking the food into perspective, it was enjoyable at most, but the Bison Burger was very heavy. Even as I had no idea of whether the burger was made from real Bison or not, it had an overall unique taste and a feel of a brick once it hit your stomach. Fries were hot and fresh and getting free refills is just another bonus. Looking at mostly the postives, as stated above, the negative was that the food was served on styrofoam plates. I guess it can both be beneficial from having to know that you are eating off a regular plate that may not be cleaned thoroughly; however, I am apparently too environment friendly.

Charlie Brown's is a great place to go with friends or on a date, but more so for the alcohol and ambiance rather than the food. When you walk in the door, give your eyes a few minutes to adjust because the inside is quite dark with fireplaces and candles giving off as much light as any light bulbs. The walls are lined with shelves full of old books, almost making it feel like you've stumbled into Hogwarts or something. Once you're able to actually see where you're going, you can either belly up to the bar, grab a table or plop down on one of the couches spread throughout the establishment, making it a unique venue for a group outing. I recently met a friend for lunch at Charlie Brown's after Snowmageddon 2015 necessitated changing our original plans. The first time I ever came here was during the Tubby Smith administration at UK and I have to admit being very disappointed with the food this time around. I ordered the blackened shrimp po' boy lunch special with loaded potato soup and iced tea to drink, which set me back nearly $13 with tax and tip (and they only had unsweetened tea). What I received was a hoagie bun dwarfing about six or seven small, leathery shrimp laid to rest inside, with a few scraps of lettuce, a couple slices of tomato and a dill pickle spear all served on the side. I took advantage of the Grey Poupon Dijon mustard on the table or this sandwich would have been drier than a James Bond martini. One would expect a little remoulade or something given the $8.50 price, but I guess "special" doesn't necessarily mean "good." The loaded potato soup, however, was out-of-this-world, and my friend's hot pepper cheese appetizer (breaded and fried cubes of pepperjack cheese served with ranch and salsa) was quite tasty. Service was adequate if unremarkable. There's a lot to love about Charlie Brown's, but most of it won't be found on the menu.

Don't get the sangria! Seriously, it's one of the worst things I've ever tasted. My husband and I were looking for somewhere different for dinner. We've lived in Lexington almost 25 years and had never tried Charlie Brown's, even when we were UK students, so we decided to try it. The food we had, grilled chicken and prime rib sandwiches, was pretty mediocre although reasonably priced. It tasted like pre-made frozen food that had been re-heated. The best part of the meal was the side of french fries. Again, just standard frozen fries, but they were perfectly cooked. All in all, I wish we hadn't wasted our money here, but I guess we didn't know until we tried it.

I finally went to Charlie Browns and was impressed more by the food and atmosphere then I was expecting. The space is nice because you have the option to sit in the cozy couch areas surrounded by bookshelves, or the bar, or the patio. The food is outstanding! Do yourself a solid and get the fried cheese balls! They also have good beer cheese and great burgers. I actually wouldn't drink much there because they don't have any beers on draft and not a nice wine selection. Definitely a place to just get a mixed drink if you are going to drink.

Walking into Charlie Browns is like walking into the basement of your stoner friends house. Burgers were first undercooked then overcooked after being sent back. SMH.

one the best little finds in Lexington for a winter drink. Warm fire and drink to warm the night.

Haven't been here since I left grad school here 17 years ago. This place is a time capsule. Timeless. Burgers are to die for! Decor is so unique. Looks like a dimly lit library. Seating is mostly couches. Several fireplaces.

Charlie Brown's is a great bar that happens to have food. There are plenty of sandwiches and fried appetizers, but don't go here expecting a nice green and leafy salad. We went here recently with a large group after a visit to Keeneland and one of our party asked the waitress if they had a honey vinaigrette. She looked at him for a moment and said, "We serve food on styrofoam plates." He didn't get it, but everyone else did. This is bar food -- pretty good bar food -- but it's food designed to make you thirsty for more beer. The decor is used bookstore/library meets your uncle's rec room -- plenty of couches to relax on and sit by the fire, plus there's a great patio out back.

SO, I love this place. The atmosphere is unbeatable. Couches. Bookshelves lining the walls. Fireplaces. Darkness (and we're talking darkness beyond mood-lighting-darkness). There is nothing pretentious about this place, and that includes the food. The veggie burger is edible at the very least, and they toast the buns which actually is a nice touch. But the rest of the food, including the mostly-fried selection of appetizers leaves something to be desired. Not that fried-food has a high standard to live up to, but they just aren't that great. The fact that everything is served on paper plates unsettles me. That's a lot of waste. The plates could be biodegradable, but either way, there are plenty of plates available that can be used that won't end up in a a landfill somewhere and won't disrupt the low-key vibe of the place. My favorite thing about Charlie Brown's is the jukebox. It just goes on without pause playing tunes from the 60s and 70s, both hits and more obscure songs. I've never heard a bad song played at Charlie Brown's, and there are very few places I can say that about.

This place is just cool! I especially love to come here on a cold, rainy, or snowy evening and chill on the couch by the fire. The food is pretty good and so is the service. It's a great place to escape your usual hangout for a change of scenery. Even though it's a college hangout, it's still inviting to a 30-40 crowd.

Dark, loud, collegy, decent service, decent selection, cool patio by the back alley where the bums come through and haggle ya for change. Not bad...

You go here to drink and avoid the sun. The place is dark and cosy, with the walls lined with books and comfy couches scattered around. It's an easy going "cheers" kinda place with a free jukebox. The mixed drinks are pretty good and it's the only place I know that makes a good brandy Alexander. That may not be saying much as not many places make them, period. The back patio is nice, with a lovely view of the parking lot, but it's still nice and quiet. I love the atmosphere there. Hell, some of the books (and yes, they are all real) are actually interesting reads if you like old books and you used to be able to take them home with you as long as you brought a replacement. They don't have anything healthy there and are unabashed about it. The place hasn't changes at all in the last 12 years that I know off, nor do I expect that it will, and that's okay. When you're good, you're good and you don't need to change.

My preferred excursion when I have a migraine. Very dark inside, but the food was surprising.

Charlie's Brown is my favorite place to go if I want to enjoy a good meal and relax. The restaurant's ambiance is private and food is surprisingly good and in good portions. Some people go there to enjoy it as a bar or its patio or watch a sports event, but I go there to enjoy it as a good restaurant. It's not noisy nor exclusive.

  • Nan C.

One of the earlier reviewers was on target when describing this as your grandma's basement. There is grandpa's old chair and tons of nostalgic pieces throughout. You are surrounded by books and drink specials. Your meals are served on styrofoam plates. I enjoyed my Cajun chicken. My fries weren't hot but they were tasty. Drinks: They serve liter mixed drinks for $10.95 Meals: Circa $8.00 Server: Attentive Vibe: I would describe it as a mix of a college crowd mixed in with some local patrons Note: I don't think this is part of the Charlie Brown's chain

Food is standard bar food. Nothing special. You come here for the atmosphere and the drinks. Decent selection of beers. Kitchen is open late.

I have been visiting Charlie Browns off and on for over 10 years. I have never been disappointed. My last server was a little slow but I am pretty sure she was a week over 21 and had been out late the night before. You cannot go wrong with the Cajun chicken sandwich, get it blackened and have cole slaw on the side. Good mixed drinks especially on a Friday evening on the back porch. The Sangria was not up to snuff the last time but these things happen.

This place is cozy, music is at the perfect volume, soft enough that you can easily carry a conversation and drinks are cheap. Staff is very friendly. I've been twice but only to drink, so cannot comment about the food yet.

My client brought me here after work while I was in Lexington a couple of weeks ago. Fun little place. Bourbon-barrel ale, a decent burger, and a definite "you're-not-in-New-York-anymore,-buster" vibe from the bartender made it a great choice.

Want to eat somewhere cozy and dark with books old chairs and firelight? I can't say that I love the type of food - what they have is good but it's not my favorite. If you like bar food and a intimate yet casual atmosphere then you should try this place out. There is also a small bar.

  • Brad F.

Charlie Brown's is a bar in a library in your grandfather's basement. There's a free jukebox stocked only with music from the mid 60's to the mid 70's. Mixed drinks come in 1L milk jugs and can be enjoyed in the comfort of a sofa by the fireplace. The perfect easy-going weeknight bar. I would highly recommend the fried pepper cheese with a kentucky ale. The back patio is a great place to spend a summer night.
