Not a bad spot for suburban Independence. The actual restaurant itself is really inviting and decorated lovely. There is also a pretty cute patio area and an interesting bar area. The staff was friendly enough when my very pregnant sister and I dined in. My first thought was that I was happy to see that there was a "Vegetarian" section of the menu. That always reassures me that the beans and rice are made without animal stock or animal fat. I ordered veggie fajitas without sour cream or cheese and my sister ordered a steak quesadilla. My sister enjoyed her steak quesadilla and my veggie fajitas were pretty okay. I expected the veggies to be grilled or sautéed but they seemed to have been steamed then lightly sautéed just to mix them together. This really reduced the flavor of the veggies and gave them a kind of soggy texture which was not super pleasant in fajitas. However, it was not bad for the vegan food desert that is Southern Kenton County.

This is owned by the same people who run the eateries in Newport & Florence, and the food is just as amazing. The grand opening was son Cinco de Mayo at 5pm, where patrons could come in and sample the foods on a buffet style table for free and only pay for their drinks. Starting 5/6/11 the restaurant is open for business with full menu offerings, but I found it to be very clever to offer the best dishes for free to entice future business. As always, the salsa is as amazing as the Newport location (not a fan of the Florence location's salsa or service). Now on to the nom nom nom... The guacamole and pico de gallo are also very fresh and authentic, with just the right amount of heat and cilantro. As for the typical offerings (chimichangas, fajitas, tacos) all are very good and portioned quite large with a reasonable price. My personal recommendation, however, is the carnitas, which is the BEST thing I have EVER had there. Ever. Imagine deep fried chunks of tender pork roast that are oh so crisp on the outside yet flavorful and moist inside, giving to the slightest pressure from your fork. Combine this with the accompaniments of pico de gallo, beans, rice, cheese, and tortillas, and this is a sure fire winner. Not sure where to take your in-laws for that first time awkward "meet the parents" meal? Go here. Here's your ace in the hole-fish bowl margaritas. No skimping on the tequila. Comprende? They'll be calling you mija/mijo by the end of the meal! Got kids? No problemo. The kids menu is sure to please, with the ever popular french fries and grilled cheese for picky eaters (my lil man was a fan), and the wait staff are all very kid friendly. The free chips and salsa is also a great busy tool for most little ones.

Rio Grande's newest addition to the growing Northern Kentucky family of Mexican restaurants, located in Independence, lives up to the standards set by the others. Tasty, generous portions of both food and drink are the main draw here. That's not to say, though, that the service isn't just as good; it is. Waitstaff is always friendly and attentive. I've never had to wait for a drink. As an Independent resident, I was particularly happy that a non-chain sit-down restaurant finally moved out our to the cultural wasteland. Frisch's and Buffalo Wild Wings may have there place, but it's much nicer to finally have a place that is, indeed, independent and a little bit unique. Oh, and this location also offers $2.99 Margaritas every evening, which makes me very happy since I'm within walking distance of my house.

Good classic Americanized Mexican food. Friendly staff - I have always had good service when we eat in but many times we just call ahead and pick up. Pretty typical American Mexican menu and food but they serve what you would expect and nothing that would really set it apart from many other Mexican restaurants. The food is good, it's basically a chain restaurant menu that is executed well and family friendly. I always compare Mexican restaurants to Chinese - more or less they all serve the same thing that tastes relatively the same with a rare few that stand out, plenty that are bad but If they are privately owned and put their own personality and style into it you find a gem. Bottom line, if you want classic American Mexican food you won't be disappointed and Rio will make your belly happy. My personal favorite is the carnitas.

I'm not really that happy with this place. They were busy when we came in.. Not swamped by any means. Everything just came in a wrong or weird time. Our kid didn't get her water until halfway in her meal. The food was okay but way over priced for the quality. Pretty much standard and not super authentic. If your in the area and want Mexican food this place will probably do it for you but don't expect much.

Good authentic Mexican food can be found here and you can taste the freshness if the food. Want a big drink? Try one of the Corona-Ritas, or just chill with a Dos Equis or Bud, with since if your buds. The Mexican Fiesta Platter is the best value on the menu and can really feed two unless you are one big guy like myself.

Rio Grande from what I hear sets the standards on Mexican food in Northern Kentucky. The place is nicely decorated and very clean. It seems be the local watering hole for the residents of Independence. The food portions are large, so I usually only eat a fourth of the portion and have left overs. This place is a great addition to the Wendy's, McDonald's, BW3's and Frisch's in the area. A very nice sit down for family.

The food didn't have very much flavor and everything was covered in sauce.

The salsa here is weak. It's like this place is trying to save money by not putting any seasoning in the foods. They do have some decent hot sauces on the tables, and I tried reviving the salsa with some of that, but it's just not the same. The portion sizes were very reasonable for the price. The place has been dead both times I've been there, so the staff never seem all that happy to be there. This is a detriment to getting drink refills and the bill, but other than that it's tolerable. If you absolutely must get your Mexican fix in Independence, this place beats the microwave burritos at the gas station. I recommend heading making the drive and getting Mexican somewhere else.

My husband and I took our 2 year old son here while visiting family in the area. We were pleasantly surprised, and my husband said it was the best Mexican meal he has had in a long time. I ordered the Chimichanga El Patron which was filled with tender pork. My husband had the Carne Asada Tacos. Both were excellent. My son had the cheese quesadilla kids meal.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
