Here in town for business. The hotel desk clerk recommended the "new restaurant" in town which has been open about six months. The lunch menu has soup and salad, Big Blue sandwiches, hoagies, burgers, pastas, and grilled chicken. I had the grilled chicken salad. I would rate the lunch grilled chicken salad as average on portion, price and taste. The lettuce seemed "off," not as fresh and crisp as I might expect, but then again, I am from the "salad bowl" of this country and greens are important to me. Service from the front door to the waitresses was responsive and attentive.

Oh man what can I say bad about this restaurant....nothing that's what. I mean I actually enjoyed my dinner at this place. I decided to go with the Dorton Demi Glaze Beef Brisket( after much considerations of other meals; there's a good bit to choose from) which was absolutely divine, since it was beef brisket and mashed potatoes drowned in brown gravy. The beef was tender, mashed potatoes just right, and the gravy was succulent...and the best thing about the meal: it was seasoned just right, not too much salt which was a plus. The atmosphere was also nice and had great ambiance. Seemed upper class at first but turned into a nice hang out spot with their multitude of TVs and popular music blaring over the speaker. Also was decked out with a bunch of photos on the walls showcasing popular locations in KY as well as celebrities who were from KY including Gorge Clooney and Johnny Depp.

I've been to this place half a dozen times and I flat give up on getting a meal without some major flaw of food or service. The last time I was there we waited 40 minutes for our food and my fries were so limp I was able to fold them into little pretzel shapes and leave them on the edge of my plate. Tonight my husband wanted to try their new coal-fired pizzas, so I agreed to go back for the first time in 7 months. We ordered a pizza, then our server came back after a few minutes and informed us they were out of pizza dough and couldn't make any more pizzas till tomorrow. Mind you, it was quarter to 7. After previous bad experiences, my priority was to find the menu item that was hardest to screw up, so I ordered the grilled cheese and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were quite good, but my sandwich was a joke. The cheese was rubbery from being allowed to sit before our food got run, the bread had no butter to help it brown, and one side had been badly burned then scraped to get the worst of the char off. They turned that side down as though I wouldn't notice. Then, while we were waiting for the bill, we sat and watched them PUT TWO PIZZAS IN THE OVEN. When we complained, the manager explained these were for personal friends of the owner who had called and "reserved" a couple of crusts before we came in. In the manager's defense, she did offer to have them make me a replacement sandwich or comp me a dessert, and she did shame the owner into offering us a free pizza if we come back tomorrow.

I've been there twice (so far) and both times were such a treat. The food is good! I had a huge grilled cheese sandwich the first time and it wasn't toasted enough. Also, it was very greasy. That's not exactly a complaint. I wanted more toasting, but it was a good sandwich despite being rushed. The second visit, I had a spinach salad. It could've been bigger for a dinner salad. However, they didn't skimp on the toppings or dressing. My dinner companion had a stuffed baked potato both times. The topping choices for the potato are a variety of cheeses, meats, and sauces/seasonings. They ordered pulled pork which, according to them, was out-of-this-world tender. The sauce for the pulled pork was vinegar-based--like it should be for Carolina-style BBQ. I had a little taste and thought it was delightful. Their desserts are so good and big! First visit, I had a blackberry cobbler that was to die for. The second, I think, was a caramel-chocolate brownie a la mode. It was wonderful. Also, they serve cocktails and a variety of beers. I haven't had the pleasure of trying any of the libations, but I look forward to it. The waitstaff is very friendly and quick with orders. It's probably the best staff in the city, in my opinion. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy. The decor is fun and homey with pictures of Kentucky natives and a large stone fireplace in the back. Overall, Jabo's is the better alternative to chain restaurants. I'd be happy to take an out-of-town guest there for lunch or dinner.

I went back to Coal River Grille(Jabo's State of Mine) for second time. I got Brisket and Chicken Sandwich for my lunch. the chicken sandwich was Chicken Breast with buns and with fries. there was no cheese or union, I think I should have ordered separately. also Brisket was BBQ sandwich in sub style. both of lunch was good and the price was fine for me. they were both 6.99 each and my colleagues enjoyed time there.

I have been to Jabo's at least a dozen times. Unfortunately the food and or service is inconsistent. At times their food is good ( mostly good) but the service has been disappointing. My wife and I have all but marked them off a place to eat. Consistency is important. Atmosphere(ambience) is important. Jabo's keeps changing menu items. I hope they can get their act together.

I loved the atmosphere of this restaurant, they pictures on the walls were amazing and they stand proud as "friends of coal" which is really nice to see in a small town like Hazard. The menu was very neatly created; they has like the Breathitt boneless chicken bites and other things that had names of the surrounding counties which is really neat. The service was one in a life time unless you come back, not a person walked in while our group of sixteen was sitting there that a worker did not open the door and great them with a smile, which is such a good first impression and it made me feel more at home and welcomed in the restaurant.

It's been two years since I've eaten here. Reminded again of how mediocre and underwhelming this restaurant is. So much potential, but the food is uninspired and bland. In addition, the restaurant is aesthetically rough around the edges. Never going back.

I thoroughly enjoyed eating at Jabo's State of Mine; a restaurant in Hazard, KY, that will bring fun and enjoyment for people of all ages. I learned things about Kentucky at Jabo's that I never would have learned anywhere else. The Kentucky facts, pictures of famous individuals from Kentucky, etc., truly adds to the experience. I ordered tri-colored tortilla chips with queso cheese dip and a garden salad. Nothing outrageous (I am gluten-free and therefore limited in what I can order), but good-sized portions coupled with very friendly service ensured a satisfactory and memorable experience. Stop by Jabo's if you're ever in Hazard!

Hey, went back to Jabo's for a class reunion and ended up eating here again. I had been incredibly reluctant to revisit this place since the last fiasco. However, I stopped in for the reunion and ordered from the menu a "Full Monty Christo" and some fries. This sandwich is turkey, ham and swiss, batter dipped and deep fried (yeah...I uttered those magic words "deep fried") and then sprinkled with powdered sugar and a raspberry sauce. With this sandwich you get the main course and dessert all together. I had this monstrosity of a sandwich with a pile of salty, golden brown, crisp, french fries (apparently the "house" fry wasn't doing well and has since been removed from the menu...thank goodness). Great meal and fairly good service. Looks like Jabo's has taken folks past comments to heart and have made the necessary changes. I'll be back to see if it sticks. Then...we'll make a final review.

This restaurant offers great quality food at prices as low as under $10. The inside of the restaurant is mostly well organized, though in some areas it gives the impression of being congested, which might not be for everyone. The staff at the place was friendly and welcoming, attending to us as soon as we walked in. The place was crowded when we got there so the waitress was not able to attend to us immediately but she made sure she attended to us promptly. Overall I believe that this is a very good restaurant to go to.

Honestly one of the best restaurants that I've ever been to. My food was amazing I had the pulled barbeque chicken sandwich which came with apple wood slaw on it. The apple wood slaw and the the puled barbeque chicken was an amazing combination. The fries at the restaurant were seasoned so well and they were cooked to perfection. I loved the atmosphere and the appearance of the restaurant. The server wasn't so good, but that's because she was the only server for six different tables. Overall I loved this restaurant, and I cannot wait until I go back

I really loved the food. I ordered Panko Tilanpia, lunch portion, so I got one side rather than two side, which I chose spinach. Great choice for the price ($6.99)! The fish was simply so good. The restaurant was crowded and the waitress apologized for making us to wait. I like it.

This was my second time at the Coal River Grille. I got the cherokee chicken this time, which is a grilled chicken breast topped with queso and corn salsa. I was very pleased with it! my food was still warm when I got it, and all of my group's food arrived in a timely manner.

I just ate at State of Mine in Hazard and I can tell you that I really enjoyed my $13.99 Solomon meal and three glasses of milk. Yummy, it was delicious. This restaurant has three sections to what I see, and one of the sections is for people who want to drink and smoke. They have a big menu and the prices are fair. The most expensive food was $20, to my knowledge, but you can order a delicious food for $10.99, and the music is playing from the 100 US songs as I am writing this review. I was only a little bit annoyed by the cigarette smell and that is only negative thing that I can tell you about this restaurant. By the way, on the wall are hanged pictures of celebrities who are from KY and you might wonder to know that some of them are from this state.

What can i say I loved it! This place recently opened December 2010 and they are already a hot spot in town. Jabo's State of Mine is a great restaurant because of the atmosphere, service and food. I really like the fact that this restaurant takes pride in naming its menu items after counties, regions, or situations in Kentucky. For instance this restaurant has a mountain top removal cake, and Breathitt Boneless Chicken Bites. I lucked up and tried the clemonade which was a mixture of cotton candy and lemonade; it was delicious. I also tried the savory honey BBQ grilled chicken sandwich which came with one side; I chose fresh fruit. This sandwich and side of fruit was fresh and flavorful. On another note, I loved the service from the wait staff because this group of women opened the door for all their customers, cater to their every need, and are very cordial. Last but not least, I really enjoyed the setting of this place because there are pictures of celebrities such as Johnny Depp on the wall, there is popular music always playing in the background, and it is a very mellow atmosphere. I enjoyed eating here, and I know you will too!
